Secrets of a Century

Secrets are revealed, and Link's lost memories are returned to him by a third party's stories about Hyrule.

Tropes

  • Adaptational Superpower Change: The king's ghost wasn't capable of Touch Telepathy in the game.
  • Costume Porn: King Rhoam's outfit is described in incredible detail, to the point where it perfectly matches his appearance from the original game.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Link's scars, most of them, are from the Great Calamity 100 years earlier. King Rhoam tells their story since Link still doesn't remember.
  • Info Dump: The old man reveals himself as the ghost of the last king of Hyrule and drops many of the reveals in a long speech to Link.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation:
    • Instead of forcing Link to choose between Heart Containers or Stamina Vessels for four Spirit Orbs, Hylia grants Link both for the price of one Spirit Orb, allowing him to greatly increase his power without the need to hunt down 120 shrines.
    • Hylia activates the Sheikah Towers and downloads the map of all Hyrule to the Sheikah Slate right off the bat, saving Link the trouble of having to investigate every single tower himself.
  • The Reveal:
    • The old man is the soul of the late king of Hyrule, King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule, who was killed 100 years ago during the Great Calamity.
    • 100 years ago, the kingdom of Hyrule unearthed Guardians, the machines Link has encountered, and the Divine Beasts, grander machines of the same technology that were once used to defeat Calamity Ganon in legends. A princess, a chosen knight, and four exceptionally skilled individuals called the Champions were trusted to lead the fight against Ganon in a repeat of what their ancestors did. However, when Calamity Ganon awakened, he took control of the Guardians and the Divine Beasts, killing the Champions, the king, everyone in Hyrule Castle, and devastated Hyrule to become the ruin it is today. The knight was fatally wounded defending the princess, who survived to face Ganon alone. Link was that chosen knight, and the princess was Rhoam's own daughter named Zelda, and she's the one who has been speaking to Link. The wounds that killed him in the Great Calamity manifest now as the scars that mark his body.
    • Calamity Ganon is dangerously close to breaking free from his deadlock with Zelda.
  • Sleepy Enemy: Link returns to the Temple of Time at night, and encounters some sleeping Bokoblins. He lets them be.
  • Soul Jar: The Spirit Orbs of the Sheikah Monks are not just artifacts carried by the monks, they are the essence of the monks. When Link approaches the Goddess Statue, he feels them get excited as they finally get to join Hylia.
  • Touch Telepathy: The flashbacks that occur in the game are shown to Link by the king through a touch to his face.
  • Wham Episode: Only the third chapter, and this is the one that makes most of the major reveals.
