     Ed Zamza
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_ed_03.jpg

The hero of the story, one day he woke up and found himself clinically dead, yet still among the living but not sure why. Thus setting him on a journey to find out what's going on.

  • Anti-Hero: He not a bad man but likewise doesn't usually go out of his way to help people for selfless reasons. Even committing a few heinous acts sometimes (Not helping a woman who was being mugged, poisoning his girlfriend, actually unplugging someone from a monitor to make them die quicker, etc), usually for petty reasons too if he's been insulted. Still he's a decent enough sort at the end of the day.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: In the end, he doesn't take Lucy's offer to become an undead like a zombie or vampire, deciding to legitimately pass on to reside in purgatory, figuring he's lived as much as he could on Earth.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not above quipping now and then.
  • Missing Reflection: He finds that he doesn't have one and thinks he's a vampire at first. But is disproven as he doesn't crave blood or have the tell-tale yellow eyes.
  • The Reveal: He's neither a zombie or a vampire, just an abnormality who's deeds when he was alive all evened out. Since all deeds are weighed after death, this left him in a limbo state where the higher celestial powers didn't know where to send him. So he was just left as a common walking corpse on Earth, the reason his reflection was missing was because his soul was cloaked to keep the Angel of Death from finding him.
  • The Undead: Well the name of the comic is Undead Ed. The question is what kind of undead is he.
  • Undignified Death: The Angel of Death revealed he died having dropped his electric razor while he was in the tub. He meekly mentions he was trying to rush for work that day.

     Ed's Girlfriend

Witch Mode

Older Form

Ed's girlfriend at the start of the comic who seems oddly not weirded out he's now dead.

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Ed tries to see if she's a witch by poisoning her as witches are immune to deadly poisons. She initially reacts to it and need to go the hospital, but turns out it was food poisoning that affected her. The poison Ed slipped in with her coffee indeed didn't do a thing.
  • Dual Age Modes: She's seen with two: a younger form and an older one. The latter usually comes about if she needs to perform a ritual and transfers her youth to something. In her case, she has two old turtles for this task.
  • Glowing Eyes: In her default mode, she's usually sporting these.
  • Lazy Bum: Despite being cured of her food poisoning, when Ed returns to the hospital, she's still there stating she bewitched the staff to continue thinking of her as a patient so she could be waited on hand and foot for a bit.
  • No Name Given: Her name is never spoken in the series least not till the end of the continuation comic, Apocalyptic Horseplay where it's revealed to be Elizabeth.
  • Red Herring: Was thought to be the cause of Ed's undead condition through a curse, but, though he does find out she's a witch. She's not revealed to be the cause of his change.
  • Really 700 Years Old: As she's a witch she's immortal and has lived a long time. Though her looks shift if she uses too much magic.
  • The Reveal: Turns out the reason she's so blasé with Ed's status is because she's a witch.

     Von Bellsing
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_von_bellsing.jpg

A so-called paranormal doctor that Ed finds on the net.

  • Herr Doktor: Subverted, he's not even German and the accent is fake. He just like to use it for show.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: He comes off like an expert but really has no clue what he's talking about half the time and a good chuck of his "research" comes from the internet.
  • Saw It in a Movie Once: He mentions to Ed he got most of his skills watching shows like Buffy and Ghostbusters.

     The Mortician
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_the_mortician.jpg

A mortician who Ed allowed to use his body for his practices.

  • The Bus Came Back: Does an interlude comic in Apocalyptic Horseplay.
  • Defensive "What?": When he mentions that he gets his corpses by grave-robbing, Ed and the Government agents around them give him funny looks eliciting this reaction.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He just known as The Mortician, nobody calls him by his real name. Not that we ever hear it.
  • The Faceless: Somewhat, you see his upper half and the glasses he wears, but he's always seen wearing a surgical mask, even when he's not working.
  • I Love the Dead: Being around corpses all day has... seem to affect his psyche a bit. So much so he even has a corpse of his own mother. Heck he manages to score a vampire girlfriend.
  • Loose Lips: Let's slip the Government is secretly re-animating corpses. Some agents show up instantly as soon as he says it.

     Chuck
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_chuck.jpg

A Government official in charge of a zombie project to make undead soldiers.

  • Mad Scientist: Seems to actually like making walking corpses and more then intrigued with Ed's case when he finds he's not like the his usual zombies re-animated through electricity.
  • So Proud of You: Played for Laughs when the zombies revolt and leave the compound without attacking him and his assistant (as they state, Chuck did give them life, so it's a fair deal). Rather than be mad at losing his project, he actually tears up and comments how proud he is of them.

     Government Re-animated Zombies
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_zombies.jpg

Two of the Government made zombies that Ed befriends. Ed meets them when he's mistake as a zombie runaway and brought to the holding area.

  • Friendly Zombie: They're re-animated corpses through science, so they don't have any craving for brains or flesh and are pretty cordial.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: The smaller zombie acts like a brainless one while in the presence of Chuck. But once Ed and he are alone, he shows he can speak normally and tells him he and several of the zombies just act this way so Chuck won't move them along to military training.
  • Off with His Head!: Gus tells Ed he managed to escape the government facility once by taking off his head which allowed him to remove the Explosive Leash the zombies have been fitted with. He shows Ed and the other zombies the trick so that they can escape.
  • No Name Given: Only the big one is named (Gus), the smaller one isn't.
  • You Are Number 6: Gus is designated Number 9 by the Government.

     Vampire Bouncer
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_vampire_bouncer.jpg

A bouncer of a local vampire bar.

  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: He looks intimidating but he really a nice guy once you get to know him.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Does this with Ed whom he assumes is gay.
  • Must Be Invited: He states he never really been invited into the bar despite working as it's bouncer. Ed lets him in, largely to spite the ghouls inside for beating him up due to unknowingly saying a racial slur (they don't really like being called "Zombies").
  • Sunglasses at Night: Wears a pair despite not really needing them considering he's a vampire.

     Vampire Girls
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_vampire_girls.jpg

A pair of vampire girls Ed befriends while trying to find out if he's a vampire.

  • The Bus Came Back: They do an interlude comic in Apocalyptic Horseplay.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Kinda, they're beings of the night and fully embrace it. But end up warming up to Ed and try to help him.
  • Hypocritical Humor: They're introduced complaining about an article claiming vampires were closer to cats due to their tendency to hiss, finding it ridiculous. Then Ed goes to introduce himself to them, causing them to hiss in surprise.
  • No Name Given: They're never named.
  • Satellite Character: They only show up twice in the comic.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Evident by their style of dress, one looks classy like she came out from the 50s era, the other looks more modern in an almost 80s fashion.

     Debby
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_debby.jpg

A vampire that the mortician hooks up with during an escapade back at the vampire bar.

     Angel of Death
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_angel_of_death_human.jpg

When on duty

An angel that comes to collect spirits after they've died.

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: They state they can take on many forms, so there's no definitive look to them. The form they have at the current is of a woman.
  • Ambiguous Gender: They don't really have a set gender, just take on the form of any given person. In this case a woman who committed suicide on New Years Eve.

     Lucy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_undead_ed_lucy.jpg

The devil's top assistant and a liaison of Hell.

  • Affably Evil: She's very cordial, is straight to the point and hardly speaks out of anger. Of course it's obvious she tries to wheel her conversations with her clients in her favor.
  • Big Red Devil: Red-skinned, pointy-eared, sharped fanged and horned. Pretty much fits the bill.
  • Last Episode, New Character: She comes in very late in the series, largely as a way to finally give Ed the answers he seeks.
  • Mouth of Sauron: Somewhat, Ed initially mistakes her for the main Devil himself but she state he's usually too busy to deal with trivial matters such as Ed's case, so she works in his stead.
