    The Player

Theodore

The character who is playing Lucifer's titular game of Pony Island. He was once a knight who fought in the Crusades and was condemned to Limbo.

  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: Theodore escapes Limbo, and makes it to Purgatory. Even the pink pony sprite makes it there, and praises your victory with a wink goodbye.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: He is damned to Limbo for his crimes as a crusader.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Of a sort. In the escape, Theodore's soul is the blackest and darkest among the thousands trapped in Limbo. And complete with draconic head firing lasers and wings, he looks like a demon in his own right. Yet he is fighting to help the others escape.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Asmodeus.exe boasts that he has never lost his mind-bending quiz game. Should you manage to see through his tricks, Theodore becomes the first one to beat Asmodeus at his own game.
  • Faustian Rebellion: He uses the equine Player Character from the games Lucifer makes to destroy Lucifer himself.
  • Featureless Protagonist: Subverted. Though it seems like you are just a nameless character at first, it is revealed through encounters with Baphomet that the protagonist is named Theodore, and he was a Crusader from the 1200s with a wife and kid.
  • Ghost Amnesia: The protagonist has been in Limbo for so long, they know nothing about themselves. Only through encounters with Baphomet can you hope to regain any memories at all.
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder: Your pony in the Pony Island segments can only take one hit, otherwise you'll have to start the stage over again. During the escape from the machine, you'll still "die" in one hit, but another pony takes your form and your place. The only effect is adding one to the "Souls Lost" count.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Digging through the code (and cryptic information Baphomet reveals) shows the crusader Theodore died because he failed to storm Jerusalem. The reason? He tried to go in through the Golden Gate. Of all the eight gates to the city, it's the only one that's permanently closed.

    Hopeless Soul
A blue soul-like character trapped inside the game. He decides to help the player escape Lucifer's game.
  • Big Good: He is the one who helps the player escape Lucifer's game, explaining how to escape and guiding the player towards the Daemons.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: He may be an example; there are moments where he acts suspiciously (he does a brief, unsettling laugh during your second chat with him, after beating Azazel), and the daemons try to lead you to believe that he's manipulating you. In a hidden scene, Lucifer will even imply that he is the Hopeless Soul. But even when the Soul turns out to be a superboss, he's just trying to satisfy the player's completionist urges, and never really does anything malevolent.
  • Superboss: If you've collected every single ticket in the game, which in itself is already a difficult feat to accomplish, he will realize the only reason you're still playing is to beat the final challenge. The battle against him involves horizontal movement, an Unexpected Shmup Level and a first person segment. Hope you remembered how to play the other games you found along the way. Oh, and every attack is a 1-hit kill.
  • Treacherous Advisor: Subverted. The Daemons tell you the Hopeless Soul isn't to be trusted, and if you collect all the tickets...he still does absolutely nothing to seem he isn't on the up-and-up, he just decides to give a satisfying conclusion to the completionist run. Played with in that after you beat the game, then tamper certain variables in the save file, come back into the game, and hit continue, it will lead you to a screen where the typical 'devil head' sprite will appear blue and talk first with the sound effect of Lucifer, berating the player messing with game files, but afterwards switching to the sound......of the Hopeless Soul. Then it will let you in on a secret — sometimes he talks "in different voices," and he asks you to "not to tell dad." He still never does anything to betray you; it's unclear if he secretly wanted you to escape, was simply sick of having people who hated his games playing them, just wanted to amuse himself, or had some other motivation.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: Lucifer implies they are the same person, just with "different voices." It is ambiguous just how true this is, or if Lucifer is lying to you, since we only have his word on it.

    Lucifer
The devil himself and the creator of Pony Island. He has trapped the player's soul inside his game and takes souls from others as well.
  • Affably Evil: Subverted. He tries to invoke this, but fails rather hilariously due to having a short temper.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Satan in a nutshell — I've got to finish this current game I'm working on! It's got to have many levels, suspense, build-up, an epic final boss, and, and ooh... here's a cute mascot for a brand NEW game!
  • Big Bad: As the one who trapped the player's soul and other souls inside Pony Island.
  • The Devil Is a Loser: Lucifer sucks at basic coding and game design, and is very obsessed with ponies.
  • Final Boss: The final opponent of the game who chases you down in the last escape sequence.
  • Hidden Depths: While abysmal at creating video games, he is frighteningly competent at creating artificial intelligence executables.
  • Hopeless with Tech: He's an abysmal game designer, to the point where a Crusader with no knowledge of video games or technology whatsoever is more capable of fixing it than him.
  • I Have Many Names: Lucifer Almighty, The Beast, Satan, SystemTech, SatanTech, etc.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: He just wants everyone to love him and his games out of free will, so he doesn't have to steal their souls through force. Though he desperately seeks this, he doesn't even know what a friend is.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Although Pony Island was created to harvest souls from the people who play it, Lucifer isn't especially interested in doing so and would rather just make games people enjoyed. He doesn't get frustrated at the player for trying to escape, but he does get frustrated whenever they "fix" his games.
  • Satan: Lucifer ("The Beast, Lucifer Almighty, Satan etc.") is the sole proprietor of Satantech Incorporated (d/b/a Systemtech Incorporated), a company which develops video games such as Pony Island and Pony Galaxy in a scheme to tempt players into selling their souls.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: Lucifer implies he and the Hopeless Soul are the same person, just with "different voices." It is ambiguous just how true this is, or if Lucifer is lying to you, since we only have his word on it.
  • We Can Rule Together: The devil laments during 'Adventure Mode' that you're going to fix/exploit bugs, and not going to play by the rules; however, he becomes excited that the player will help them play-test his newest "game design revolution" together. What makes it tragic for him is you make progress faster than he can code up levels, and refuse to take breaks.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Satan has a fit of rage when you cheat, revealing he is secretly desperate to win his father's praise.
  • We Will Meet Again: If the player performs poorly during the final escape sequence, Satan lets them go, but not before vowing to catch them next time.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: The devil often tries to assert ownership of the souls who play his game. The protagonist is having none of it.

    Louey
The host of the revamped Pony Island. He serves as a tutorial guide to help the player understand the game's mechanics.
  • Louis Cypher: Louey in the colorful version of Pony Island.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: He talks in a cutesy, cheery manner and is incredibly friendly to the player. Given that he is a creation of Lucifer, and he gets suspicious at times, the player is likely to suspect he is evil, especially when the Ominous Visual Glitches start showing up. But he never antagonizes you until you shoot at him- then he comes at you in the Final Boss for revenge.

    Azazel.EXE
The first of the Daemon Programs. Although rude and arrogant, he will try to prevent the player from processing further.

    Beelzebub.EXE
The second of the Daemon Programs. He is a big monster with rudimentary programming and not much intelligence.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: The little scope symbols highlight his weak points upon respawning.
  • Dumb Muscle: Unlike his more sophisticated comrades, Beelzebub's programming isn't very complex, and thus the fight with him is downplayed into a very generic boss battle. Asmodeus even Lampshades this.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: He fights you in an endless castle: shooting stalactites from the mouth, striking the ground with his fist, punching in the air... all while he's crawling away from you.
  • Go for the Eye: While it's more like a red sigil located on his eye, it's one of his weak points that the player must destroy with the pony lazers.
  • MacGuffin Guardian: He guards the second of the three CORE files.

    Asmodeus.EXE
The third and last of the Daemon Programs. He prides himself on his higher level of intelligence than the other programs, and will prove it by playing a seemingly simple quiz game with you.
  • Affably Evil: He isn't as outright rude as Azazel or destructive like Beelzebub, he gives you genuine compliments at points, and concedes defeat when you win and seems to be satisfied with the game he played. Whilst most definitely an antagonist, he seems the most decent of the Daemons.
  • Continuity Cameo: He can appear for a split second in The Hex, an implied Stealth Sequel, if you carry out the steps to crash Secrets of Legendaria, just before the game window closes.
  • Evil Genius: Instead of a puzzle or a standard boss fight like the other two guys, he challenges you to a battle of wits in which he uses your every weakness against you while asking you simple questions. He outright tells you a phrase to type while sending you fake steam messages of a random person in your friends list (and will kill you if you alt+tab away to check your messages), tries to distract you with a sparkling pony so you don't see another phrase to type in his next question, and will outright fake-crash your game while you're inputting a simple code.
  • Genius Bruiser: He calls himself the most sophisticated AI in the bunch, and he backs up the claim via playing a twisted mind game with you. He is also very buff, as seen whenever you lose said game and he attacks you.
  • Graceful Loser: After beating him, he congratulates the player, and accepts his demise with dignity.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: Lampshaded by him. He has become far more sophisticated than the other programs and will employ fourth-wall breaking tricks to beat you.
  • MacGuffin Guardian: He guards the last of the three CORE files.
  • Medium Awareness: He is the only character who not only knows that he is in the In-Universe arcade game, but displays knowledge of being in the out-of-universe game itself. As such, he can do things like impersonating one of your friends on Steam and even temporarily freeze the game to trick you into tabbing out.
  • Not Afraid to Die: If you beat him, he allows you to delete him and states that death will be a "great adventure" to him.
  • Puzzle Boss: The boss fight against him is not really a traditional fight. Rather, it functions more like a Pop Quiz where you must watch him carefully and type whatever he asks if you. But he will deploy all sorts of measures to distract you, even doing things like pretending to be a Steam friend sending messages or making social media notification noises, and you have to ignore them to win.

    Buer.EXE
A former Daemon Program who once guarded the final CORE file, but was replaced by Asmodeus. He now resides in the Adventure Mode overworld map, plotting revenge.
  • Playful Cat Smile: He does this whenever he speaks, even when plotting vengeance.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Subverted. For stealing his seat as guardian of a system core file, Buer swears vengeance upon Asmodeus. But he's completely impotent and powerless to do anything about his sorry lot. Even worse, Asmodeus knows this.
  • Vertebrate with Extra Limbs: He becomes a twitchy, 5-legged furball of a daemon upon activation. Justified considering he is based on the real demon found in Ars Goetia.

    Baphomet
A demon who will tell you parts of your past if you find him.
  • The Omniscient: He knows everything about you. Your past, your present, and your future. Everything. However, he's not much of a conversationalist, you will only learn one truth at a time.
