All people - scholars, clerics, kings, warriors, and commoners - accept that our world is a diverse one, blessed with a beauty and soul of its own that connects, in some way, to all life born into it. Yet, while the world may be a fascinating and grand spectacle, it is no less victim to adversity both from within and from beyond... Spirits from the outer-realms who are envious of its lands seek it conquered or erased. We may never know and understand Koldenwelt in its entirety, yet it is only the children of this world who exist freely and beyond the servitude of gods. And we all must fight to keep this freedom.

A Spin-Off of the SporeWiki Fiction Universe, the SporeWiki Fantasy Universe is a Fanfic Shared Universe composed of a wiki-style Universe Compendium and various stories written by a number of different authors, typically written in the form of High Fantasy, Heroic Fantasy and Dark Fantasy, using Spore as an illustration tool.

The setting takes place in the world named Koldenwelt, a planet where the forces of order and chaos have warred for dominance for thirty thousand years. Earthly gods of magic known as the Colossi governed the world during its infancy, conflicting with the gods of other planes known as the Simulacra and leading to untold devastation. The vilest of them, Caligaduro Provectus, would rule Koldenwelt for most of its ancient history, backed up by armies of Void Denizens, until the forces of the world successfully imprisoned him and his minions deep underground.

With the end of the war against the demons, life begun to flourish once more across Koldenwelt's two continents. In the forests of the west, the elves created the Sovereignty of Dryada, becoming the greatest elven nation of modernity, while the humans of the east, who had a long and bitter rivalry with the elves, gave rise to the expansionist and xenophobic Empire of Man. In the central desert, the Merovar Dynasty has grown into the world's economical superpower, uniting the continent through its trading routes, and at the south, the Khargrim Greatholds maintains its place as the mightiest dwarven culture.

However, while the forces of the Void were defeated, peace has not lasted; worshipers of the Simulacra prowl the dark corners of civilization, The Undead rise at the northeast, and the Void seeks to allow their master freedom once more...

The SporeWiki Fantasy Universe lasted from 2011 to 2018, where it became an Orphaned Series due to its writers effectively leaving the website. While a reboot was attempted in 2019, featuring a completely new setting, it never really got off the ground.

This Shared Universe gives examples of the following tropes:

  • 24-Hour Armor: During his time as a cursed wraith, Norrigan never removed his armor. He removed his chestplate only once, but even then never took off his helmet, not even to his year-long companions.
  • Aborted Arc: The Eschaton arc's final story was never written.
  • Absolute Xenophobe: Present in multiple factions out of distrust for outsiders:
    • The Skaurovirn brutally murder any non-Skaurovirn who enters their lands and holding a particular hatred for humans in specific.
  • Abusive Precursors: The Ordnung once ruled the Ar-Klith Mountains with an iron fist, using it as a test bed for numerous hideous experiments, leading it to become infested with monsters such as basilisks and cockatrices.
  • The Ageless: What constitutes a true immortal in the setting. The ancient immortals of the world all possessed biological immortality, only dying from external sources such as violence. Following the destruction of the Phoenixes, true immortality is near extinct in the world due to the actions of Isiris who introduced the concept of mortality to the world.
  • Alchemic Elementals: Fiery Salamanders, Undines and Gnomes with affinity with the earth all exist in Koldenwelt. No sign of Sylphs, however, at least for the time being.
  • The Alcoholic: Pelagrios, Played for Laughs.
    Pelagrios: Rum insurance. Best idea.
  • The Alliance: The Sovereignty of Dryada, which is made up of various elven nations and smaller beastmen vassal states. It is not quite The Republic, as it isn't a democracy.
  • All Trolls Are Different: Trolls are generally considered a type of Giant and aren't known to have any relation with one another. The most prominent are the Rhaz'Gan Trolls, one of the largest civilizations of the western continent.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: The headquarters of the original Dawn Wardens, a group of very powerful heroes in ancient times, was eventually attacked and destroyed by the forces of the Void. The only survivors of the attack were Vixaatus and Kinmorunddraver, and the base itself was reduced to a pile of rubble.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Any creature native to the realms of Caligaduro Provectus, Ramainaualmari, Kaicaiusarin, the Crux, Zran Kar, Kalisearan and Alar'xashan.
  • Always Night: The Duskwoods are locked in perpetual night. The reasons for it are unknown, but it's widely assumed that the place is cursed to some extent, as The Undead rise from it without any sort of outside influence.
  • Always Save the Girl: Hachi's mentality during the War of Vampires, especially after the second half. Saving Clothovera was his number one objective, and the rest of the world came second.
Hachi: Even gods can't stop me, Clothovera! Not you, not Zran Kar! And you want to know why they won't stop me, Clotho? It's because of you! Not the Countess you are now, but you! The real you! You are the one that drives me onward... and you'll be the one that I save tonight!
  • And I Must Scream: Done to Xacutus before he was reawakened, where his soul had been cut in two parts and he was forced to remain in a vegetative state for about 7,000 years.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: The Colossi serve as this to the elemental schools of the Source they reign over. The Simulacra, on the other hand, personify various aspects of sapient intelligence.
  • Apocalypse How: Caligaduro Provectus caused a Class 3a during his reign on Koldenwelt. His ultimate goal was to cause a Class Z through all realms of the Aethereal Firmament.
  • Assimilation Plot: Lympharians create more of their kind by trapping their victims with Demon Crystal, turning their bodies into a new Lympharian shell while their souls are sent to the realm of Crystallis to become enslaved by the demons who live there.
  • The Bad Guy Wins:
    • The ending of Inferno Rises had Xacutus reawakening and the Vulcanus Horde returning to activity.
    • During the Eschaton arc, the ending of The Golden Necropolis had a piece of Caligaduro Provectus being awakened by Janos Omegon, with the Shiarchon preparing a cataclysmic war once more. Later on, Darkest Before Dawn ended with Kaicaiusarin rising from the earth and destroying much of the Talmyr region.
  • Basilisk and Cockatrice: Both exist, and are creations of the Cobalt Kingdom, created through flesh-shaping magic. Basilisks are serpents with chicken combs, while cockatrices resemble draconic roosters. They both can petrify people with their bite.
  • Bears Are Bad News: The Kôrhusn are a species of bear people who'd much rather you leave them alone. While not evil or inherently aggressive, provoking them is a big mistake.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • There are some genuinely nice heroes in Koldenwelt. But mess with any of them enough, and you'll learn why they've survived for as long as they did.
    • Eostraeya is the patron goddess of life and the most angelic of the Simulacra. The dwarf warlord who stole her sacred tree in Steel of the Plagued Land was wrapped in roots and forced under the dirt so that she'd make fertilizer out of him.
  • Big Bad: This title is contested depending of the fiction writer, as each story arc usually possesses its own Big Bad. Among the largest ones of the setting are Imperator Kalarah, Praenuntius, Vanguard, Tibias Merrow and Xacutus the Pyromancer.
  • Black-and-Gray Morality: In terms of factions. While the setting does have its heroes, the majority of its political powers are neutral in nature and are filled with flaws. Meanwhile, hordes of clearly evil monstrosities have been attempting to sunder the world for millennia.
  • Black Magic: Dark magic is one of the divine schools of the Source, with its practitioners being called umbramancers. While not inherently evil, it tends to attract bad people for... obvious reasons. Ramainaualmari has its own type of umbramancy called abyssal magic, which is essentially dark magic empowered by the Simulacrum.
  • Blinded by the Light: Oevrumine live in Qliphoth, which is typically covered in dark clouds, and as such they don't appreciate bright lights in their eyes. Khosrovhreiar, being an albino, had particularly sensitive eyes, a fact which Hald-Sleac Kraasteg gleefully took full advantage of.
  • Blow You Away: Wind magic, one of the primary elemental schools of the Source. Practitioners of it are called aeromancers.
  • Body Horror: Invariably what happens when you deal with primal magic. Victims end up transformed into bloated, fleshy abominations.
    • Individuals inflicted with the Rat Curse become half-rat beings, with rat fur, tails, eyes, whiskers and skeletal structure, meaning they grow extra bones. This is more visible on the cursed being's legs.
    • Abyssal magic, the magic used by Ramainaualmari's servants, causes the practitioner to become increasingly monstrous. In this case, however, the mutations tend to be not only expected, but welcomed by the servants of the dark god.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: This is how the Cult of the Eclipse grows its numbers. It corrupts and brainwashes the masses, turning them into violent and zealous followers of Ramainaualmari's ideals.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Caligaduro Provectus, Ramainaualmari and Kaicaiusarin were all defeated in ancient history, though many Colossi had to die to see it through, and it led to the extinction of all true immortal races, with a death toll of billions, if not more.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Mivtanreior suffered from this after being force-fed one of Eostraeya's sacred fruit at the climax of Steel of the Plagued Land, causing him to lose all of his powers and turn back into a normal and far more easily killable Oevrumine.
  • Cat Folk: The Ankhor of the Sea of Sand and the Eza'naeran of the Polar Lands are races of cat people.
  • Comically Missing the Point: This exchange in The Storm Chaser.
Moon King: Children of Zran Kar and children of Isiris together. You will tell me all that there has come to transpire in this world since I left it.
Clamak: Clamak make nice mug from Mauler scales.
Norrigan: That is probably not a relevant historical event, Clamak.
    Clamak: But nice mug though.
  • Cult: The Cult of the Eclipse are the most prominent, being the main mortal servants of Ramainaualmari in Koldenwelt.
  • Cute Ghost Girl: D'arcy Blackharp, one of the servants of The Grim Reaper. She's welcoming, if not a bit mischievous. Unless you provoke her, that is.
  • Dem Bones:
    • Tibias Merrow, the mortal master of the Cult of the Eclipse, is an undead skeleton.
    • Much of the Endless Host's cannon fodder is composed of animated skeletons.
    • Up to the end of Eschaton, Shiarchon males got stripped to the bone as they got older.
  • Demonic Possession: Clothovera Moirai was possessed by Zran Kar twice, first during the War of Vampires and later during Hysteria, though the latter was an avatar rather than the proper demon.
    • Clotholaire Moirai, Clothovera's distant ancestor, suffered the same, by the same demon. It's in the blood, apparently.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Geomancy and arenamancy, the Source magical schools of earth and sand respectively.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: The War of Vampires provided two examples:
    • While the hero team was busy discussing about whether they should slay Varelos von Dalverat or not, Alfgund Stonesoul was too busy staring at Dragostea's bosom.
    • When confronted by Nosfer and Golem at Castle Nightshade, Dragostea, Aurora and Khadya did what was essentially a strip-tease show to keep them distracted. It worked very well.
  • Dracolich: Numerous undead dragons appeared in the final moments of The Forgotten Lands.
  • Dragon Rider:
    • The Wyvernrider Legion of the Duchy of Erylianus is made up of elves who ride fire-breathing wyverns.
    • Some Néva have been seen riding Frost Drakes.
  • Disney Death: Despite being thrown out of the balcony of a very tall castle on top of a mountain, Julianus Franciscus is revealed to be alive and kicking in Winter of Discontent, now crowned the new Imperator of the New Adravaelic Empire.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Most of the Simulacra. Caligaduro Provectus is a titanic, nearly-omnipotent monstrosity who can kill you by merely gazing at him, Vargash is a giant worm filled with teeth, spikes and tentacles, the Crux is a perpetually rabid beast who functions solely through his Id, Zran Kar is a tall emaciated-looking bat devil who lives atop a mountain of blood... the list goes on.
  • Elemental Embodiment: Three forms of these exist in the setting: Colossi, Elementals and True Dragons. All of them represent one of the many branches of the Source, with the Colossi being the patron gods of said elements, the Elementals being the elements in a primal, living form and the True Dragons being great draconic creatures who govern over said elements.
  • Elemental Powers: Divided in primary (fire, water, earth, air) and secondary (lightning, ice, sand). They're the most commonly found schools of the Source.
  • Enemy Mine: Nations tend to unite to fight world-threatening forces, even if they can't stand each other normally.
    • A number of nations who normally don't work together joined forces to push back the Legion of Shiarchon during the War for the Eye and Eschaton. A number of evil Simulacra who absolutely loathe each other also contributed due to their mutual hatred for Caligaduro Provectus.
    • The Khargrim Greatholds and the Koll Dwarves of Qliphoth joined forces to combat the Vulcanus Horde in Steel of the Plagued Land.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Khadya has received this treatment from a couple of females, including Clothovera and Javina Desertsun. Subverted with the latter, however, as she is homosexual and as such attracted only to girls.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: While almost entirely omniscient, Zran Kar is genuinely unable to understand love. He instigated the entire War of Vampires solely for the sake of studying what someone can do for love.
Zran Kar: The experiences... the knowledge.... thanks to you, Hachitao Yiachaakangan and Clothovera Moirai... I am one step forward to... understand the thing you call love.
Hachi: All this... The d-deaths, the mind c-control, the b-battles, all of it... w-was so you could be closer to understanding something? ... A-Are we really that i-insignificant to you?
Zran Kar: Of course. To make an omelette... you must break a few eggs... is that not how you mortals say it?
  • Evil Only Has to Win Once: The reason Caligaduro Provectus and his goonies can't have an absolute victory is that if they did, there would be no more setting. Period.
  • Evil Versus Evil: There are a lot of evil factions in the setting, and their goals typically don't align. This leads to fights, which the protagonists often take advantage of.
    • During the late Eschaton, the Legion of Shiarchon was indiscriminately slaughtered by the demons of Kaicaiusarin, despite them both being servants of the Void.
    • During the War of Vampires, the Brainwashed and Crazy Nightshade Clan fought the Vulcanus Horde and the Exosubstratal.
    • Following the defeat of Caligaduro Provectus at the end of Eschaton, Ramainaualmari rebelled against the Void and became enemies with it due to seeing it as limiting to his potential, abandoning Void Magic and becoming a god of Dark Source Magic. Now his followers and the servants of Caligaduro no longer see each other eye to eye, to say the least.
  • The Fair Folk: Unseelies are dark fairy creatures who haunt the Frontier Land and are associated with Vargash, one of the avatars of Ramainaualmari.
    • Mikmik are plant fairies who live at Hyperion Island and make outsiders hunt giant monsters for their tails. Downplayed as, while greedy, they aren't malevolent in the slightest.
  • Fantastic Racism: It's a surprise diplomacy even works in the setting sometimes.
    • Imperial Humans are the most prominent example, harboring a grudge against all elves due to most being former slaves of the Aithrena Elves. Mannazians are open to beastmen, but hate elves with a passion. Alhassans just hate everyone.
    • While they're becoming better over time, the oldest Aithrena Elves still see Humans as sub-citizens at best and slaves at worse.
    • Derevar Elves are often victims of this due to their anti-magical properties making them unpleasant to be close to for most other living beings.
    • Up to the events of Steel of the Plagued Land, Khargrim Dwarves and Koll Dwarves did not long at all.
    • The Orichalcum Elves believed themselves superior to all other races of Koldenwelt. When the demons of the Void arrived, they had no allies to call for.
    • The Skaurovirn have an almost cartoony hatred for anyone who isn't their own kind, but they hate humans the most for no specific reason.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture:
    • The first major antagonists introduced, the Legion of Shiarchon, are basically demonic Romans
    • With their imperialistic tendencies, top hats, poshness and advanced technology, the Klaxxa are clearly based on The British Empire (although their empire is aerial rather than marine). Their larger cousins, the Draonoggr, are more Scandinavian.
    • The real prize, however, goes to the Empire of Man. Being one of the largest Koldenwelti civilisations, it is composed of different provinces, with each province being a Culture Chop Suey in itself - L'Ammanori is a mixture of the Moorish Spain, Portugal and Medieval Italy, Saphronia is magical Russia with elements of Ukraine (its leader is called Hetman) and Scandinavia (having names like Valdemar and Freja), Alhassal encompasses Indian, Middle Eastern and North African cultures, and Karacayople is vaguely Turkic despite being inhabited by black people. The Empire as a whole is vaguely similar to the Tsarist Russia, being multiethnic, colonialist as well as huge, but is also a bit like its eventual successor, having been founded through a brutal revolution of the oppressed underclass against the wealthy elite (in the Empire's case, the aristocrats being elves). Its origin as a group of colonies banded together against their parent state evokes Eagleland, while its search for its own national identity is reminiscent of the Civil Rights Movement, with a dash of Malcolm Xerox. Finally, the state humans have slowly fallen into following their liberation - becoming a massive authoritarian nationalistic empire that worships its leader and fosters disdain for the outside world - is somewhat similar to one German party...
  • Fantastic Naming Convention: Some, though not all, Koldenweltian species have definite naming conventions.
    • The Orichalcum Elves and their descendants the Shiarchon, usually have Roman names (e.g Constantius Castus Matthias Laurentius - the full name of the local dark elven Evil Overlord). Other elf races too on occasion have Roman-ish or Greek-ish names or at least surnames (e.g Bertonius, Aerember, Moirai).
    • Klaxxa full names are fairly long and sound both harsh and slightly Celtic (e.g Arkendhain O'Lakweonn); however, they are usually referred by their short names, which are comprised of the two first syllables of their first name and the first syllable of their surname separated by a dash (e.g Arken-Lak).
    • Human surnames are almost always Luke Nounverber and often meaningful (e.g Desertsun, Brightwing), while their first names are fairly mundane, if unusual/archaic (Marcos, Valdemar, Adalla) and usually taken from the cultures their provinces are based on.
  • Fantasy Gun Control: While gunpowder exists in the setting, guns are considered advanced technology and as such only exist in two factions, the Empire of Man and the Ar-Klith Sky Empire.
  • Fauns and Satyrs: Satyrs, under the name "Saiteir", are a type of wane, outsiders native to the realm of Hunter's Grove and servants of Harstag, the Simulacrum of the Hunt.
  • Fiery Salamander: The creatures called blazing salamanders are a type of lesser fire elemental, made to represent the fire salamander of alchemy. They're about the size of a medium dog and tend to live in swamps.
  • Fighting a Shadow: The monstrous god-beings who interact with mortals who are identified as the Simulacra are closer to avatars than the true deities. It is believed the Simulacra's whole beings include their entire planes of existence. Hachi learned this the hard way during his confrontation with Zran Kar in the War of Vampires.
  • Fire Keeps It Dead: This is the best way to deal with Idkin. Leaving their corpses to rot normally will lead them to turn into flesh-trees which will eventually give birth to more Idkin, but if you incinerate the remains, they'll stay dead.
  • Flesh-Eating Zombie: The Duskwoods are infested with these. The ghouls are the most prominent and tend to give the most trouble to the locals.
  • Forced Transformation: During Doctrina Venefica, following the defeat of Prisieth Faemyar, Szalvetha Vairadi decided to transform her into a harmless newt, as killing her would be problematic for her and her friends' standing in the Collegium.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Some True Dragons can assume the shape of humanoids for the sake of more easily blending in with mortals. The Aether Drakes make the most use out of this ability, as they infiltrate societies in order to make sure they don't abuse magic.
  • Frazetta Man: The Troglodytes of the Slumbering Isle, a primitive type of Human who lives in the land's extensive cavern systems. They spend most of their time clashing with (and getting killed by) the dwarven hold established in the island.
  • Functional Magic: The Source is the standard kind of magic on Koldenwelt. The inhabitants of the Void use Void Magic instead, while the inhabitants of Id use Primal Magic.
  • Giant Spider:
    • Among the war beasts of the Vulcanus Horde are creatures known as Aranignum, who are giant fire-breathing spiders.
    • The Kame Isles is home to Jorōgumo, who resemble beautiful Lagosi women from waist up and giant spiders from the waist down. The most famed one is Kaguyhaasa the Widow, a follower of the Cult of the Eclipse.
  • God: The highest in the setting is Isiris, who is believed to be the very soul of the Source, Koldenwelt, the Aethereal Firmament, or all at once.
  • God of Good: Among the Simulacra are Nalashtannylor, Eostraeya and Harstag. Among the Colossi are nearly all of them with the exception of those who choose to be neutral or evil. Other benevolent gods beings include Pheonas, Soldalatel and Aethereus.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Imperatrix Misericordia was one of the most terrible rulers of the Orichalcum Elf Imperium, with her rule being remembered as one of the darkest times of the nation's history. Among massacres and persecutions, she is said to be responsible for at least fifteen million deaths.
  • Golem: Used by numerous races as servants. Niaka use golems as Powered Armor. Lympharians and gargoyles, being made of minerals, are considered to be species of golems.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: An interesting case happened with the Crux, the Simulacrum of violence. He was always an Eldritch Abomination by mortals standards, but in a time before time, he was relatively neutral, content to exist in his realm with his creations. However, at some point, he decided to explore the universe beyond his realm, leading him to discover Isiris' design - that is, "our" material plane. What unfolded was that the Crux was not able to comprehend what he witnessed; the material plane was as alien to him as he was to mortals. The revelation that the rest of this existence was, by his standards, one massive Eldritch Location ruled by forces he couldn't understand completely shattered his mind, transforming him into the Mad God of Evil we have now.
  • The Good Kingdom: The Sublime Chivalry of Aynach, an entire kingdom of Knights in Shining Armor. Among the human factions of the setting, it is the most white in morality, serving as a contrast to the rest of the fairly hostile Empire of Man.
  • Gravity Master: A rare, animalistic dragon race from Hyperion Island called the Kevonata displays power over gravity, which they use to manipulate objects from a distance. One is featured in the side-story Angels of the Hunting Isle.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The evil Simulacra tend to be this, when they're not stepping up and being the direct Big Bad.
  • Green Thumb: Nature magic. Practitioners are known as floramancers.
  • The Grim Reaper: Dominus Mortis, a.k.a. Mortium, the Simulacrum of death.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Clothovera Moirai and her brother Damon are half-Manorian human, half-Aithrena elf hybrids.
    • Pelagros Sea-Cutter is half-Manorian human, half-Natelevarí elf.
    • Khara Greenforce is half-human, half-Black orc.
    • R'hiza Saltstrider is half-Freelander human, half-Erylia elf.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Javina Desertsun started out outright antagonistic, but has slowly been turning a new leaf. Very, very slowly, but she has.
    • Alhazred was at first fully loyal to Zran Kar, but eventually realized she treated him much better than his master ever did.
    • Arcturus, a Shiarchon Praetor, changed sides after being captured by the Warriors of Dar-Nahalant during the Fall of Talmyr.
    • At the climax of The Storm Chaser, Dragostea manages to convince the Moon King to reconsider his plans, which appears to make him give up on the whole "remake Koldenwelt in my own image" business. Only time will tell if it'll stick.
    • In the backstory, this happened to Varelos von Dalverat. While he started out as a ruthless conqueror, he mellowed out with age, no longer wishing war upon the world so that his children would no longer die.
  • Horse of a Different Color: The Khargrim Dwarves ride war boars as mounts.
  • Hulk Speak: Most often by primitive races such as goblins and the Munki. Also done by Golem from the Nightshade Clan and Big Beard Clamak.
  • Humanity Is Advanced: Technologically, at least. Humanity's knowledge of the Source is lacking at best, though they do have some good mages.
  • Humanity Is Young: Sort of. Humanity as a whole is quite ancient, but due to being enslaved by elves, they only managed to form their own culture relatively recently.
  • Human Sacrifice: Widely practiced by the Freeland City States, with the city of Tehuilotl taking it up to eleven, with it sacrificing a significant part of their commoners to the demon god Zhmagaralahtius every year.
  • Humans Are Flawed: Imperials Humans at their core aren't entirely evil, just quite flawed and scarred by being abused by others. The Sublime Chivalry of Aynach in particular has cordial relations with factions other humans would treat as enemies.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Humans are the Nazis of the setting at their worst. Some provinces however, such as Aynach, subvert this trope entirely.
  • Humans Are White: Played with. Koldenweltian humanity is fairly diverse ethnically; the first human faction introduced to the Fantasyverse was vaguely East Asian (presumably in appearance as well as culture), while the Empire, the main human government in the world, runs the gamut of colours from pale white (Saphronian Hetmanate) to dark brown (Karacayople). However, most human or half-human protagonists (Marcos, Clothovera, Valdemar, Sefarina, Norrigan) are fairly light-skinned (save for Javina).
  • An Ice Person: Practitioners of ice magic, who are known as cryomancers.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Very common, due to the diverse number of races in the setting. Groups of adventurers who are friends with one another tend to include members of at least four species.
    • The Goldhawks, one of the most famous adventuring parties, were made up of two Aithrena elves, a Khargrim dwarf, an Aynachian human, an Undine and a Gnoll.
  • Interspecies Romance: Rather uncommon, but it happens, most often between two types of Deiwos. The most famous is Hachi (a rabbit person) and Clothovera (a half-elf).
    • Daithelen Kevlamir, an Aithrena elf, fell in love with and married Riomara Acquae, a water elemental.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: The short story Hysteria involved a number of Clothovera Moirai's companions entering her mind in order to purge it of demonic corruption.
  • Kaiju: The Colossi all qualify, as they are all at least 100 meters (~320 feet) tall, long, or both.
    • The Old Colossi tended to be far larger than the New ones, possibly due to have been alive for far longer, with the smallest being around the 300 meter mark. Nalúnt, the Storm Colossus and one of the few Old Colossi still alive is roughly a kilometer long.
    • Kami the Primeval, the first Kamehebi, was large enough that when he died, his cracked shell became a small archipelago.
    • The reigning crown, however, belongs to Tritonomarth, the Old Colossus of Water, who was estimated to be three kilometers tall and over fifteen kilometers long. He was large enough that other Colossi could comfortably rest on his head.
  • Kappa: Most known as Kamehebi, but Kappa is also a valid name. They're natives of the Kame Isles, have an elite caste of fire-breathing dragon-turtles and have historically been abused by Min Lagosi.
  • Kill the God: Most Old Colossi died over five thousand years in the past. The New Colossi eventually rose to replace them.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Norrigan of Aynach, quite literally post-ascension.
    • The entire order of the Knights of the All-Seeing (which Norrigan is now leader of) is this. It's an order of Aynachian knights motivated by nothing but altruism and the ideals that the world doesn't belong to humankind; rather it belongs to all children of Isiris, who are all equal under Her gaze. Tales of their feats are legendary, and they're seen as heroes by humankind and as a good reason not to mess with Aynach by their enemies.
  • Large Ham:
    • Norrigan of Aynach, prior to The Curse of Visonia, couldn't speak one sentence without being as bombastic as possible. This was largely due to his inexhaustible enthusiasm.
Mhor: I have a plan, but it's stupid. Get her thrown into one of the geysers.
Norrigan: We thrive in stupidity! Let us do so!
    • Xacutus is almost unable to not yell out his sentences.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Alhazred had his memory wiped when he was transformed into a demonic book by Zran Kar. He started regaining it following his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Light Is Not Good: Alar'xashan, the Simulacrum of Order, who resembles a massive dragon of light. He's among the most evil of the Simulacra.
  • Loads and Loads of Races: Thanks to the freedom provided by Spore's Creature Creator, there are a lot of races in the setting, even discounting the standard fantasy races.
  • Long-Lived: Certain races, such as Elves, have very long lifespans. This is also a common feature of the Kelodhres, especially the True Dragon races.
  • Love Goddess: Kalisearan is said to represent passion.
  • Mad God: Crux, who is a feral entity composed entirely of Id. Curiously subverted with Ramainaualmari, as while he represents madness, he isn't actually insane himself.
  • The Magocracy: The Magocracy of Alkatar.
  • Making a Splash: Water magic, one of the primary elemental schools of the Source. Practitioners are known as hydromancers.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Ho boy.
    • Khadya is 50% Action Girl, 50% eye candy.
    • The succubi an entire subspecies of vampire dedicated to this. When they're around, expect a lot of ogling to occur from at least one character.
    • Ennea Ignaura's and Prisieth Faemyar's outfits are probably not quite fit for an university, even if it's one about magic. In Prisieth's case, she did it purposely to seduce her students, because she was into that sort of thing.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Atrocius, Leviathan, Bone-Breaker...
  • One-Gender Race: The Undine are a race of female-only water elementals. The southern mermaids are also completely female.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Alvinian Varaikar is usually called Sea Witch by everybody else. She, too, usually refers to herself only as Sea Witch rather than her real name.

  • Our Centaurs Are Different: Koldenwelt centaurs are a Proud Warrior Race of divided Blood Knights who live at the region of Tartarion.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Void Denizens and Eidolons are demons who use the Power of the Void, while Kruos and Sanguinaries use Black Magic. They're all interested in either dominating or destroying all mortal life.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Dragons are known as Kelodhros in Koldenwelt and are the second most known kind of species after the Deiwos. There are also most conventional dragons known as "Drakes", but those are much less common.
  • Our Dwarves Are All the Same: Dwarves are a type of Deiwos and, for the most part, act as you'd expect dwarves to; lots of drinking, fighting and industry. The main dwarven civilization are the Khargrim Greatholds, led by the Khargrim Dwarves.
  • Our Elves Are Different: Elves, or rather all humanoids, are known as Deiwos in Koldenwelt and are divided in multiple sub-races. Humanity is considered a subspecies of Deiwos. Other examples include the Shiarchon (Dark Elves), the Néva (Night Elves), the Aithrena (Wood Elves) and the Orichalcum Elves (High Elves).
  • Our Gargoyles Rock: Gargoyles were originally created to be servants of vampires. They are golem-like entities who attack enemies who suspect them to be statues, and they are often used as guardians for important locations.
  • Our Giants Are Bigger: Giants on the classic meaning of the word don't exist on the setting. Instead, giants are a sub-classification of Deiwos. Giant sub-races include Cyclopes, Septentrions and Bálstedunn.
  • Our Gnomes Are Weirder: Curiously, gnomes in this setting are considered a type of dwarf rather than their own thing. Only one type is known, the Southwhistle gnomes, who are member of the Khargrim Greatholds. In terms of behavior, they're quite energetic and have a close affinity with earth magic.
  • Our Goblins Are Different: Goblinoids are a type of Deiwos. They tend to be savages and malevolent, with varying degrees of competence.
  • Our Gods Are Different: The universe has multiple god beings, including the likes of Isiris, the Colossi, the Simulacra, Pheonas and others.

  • Our Mermaids Are Different: Merrow, as they're known, are a One-Gender Race resembling beautiful elven women from the waist up and fishes from the waist down who live in the sourth-eastern sea. They love wooing passing sailors.
  • Our Minotaurs Are Different: Minotaurs in Koldenwelt refer to themselves as "Oevrumine". On top of the usual physical might and affinity with labyrinths, they're also one of the few races in the setting to be anti-magical in nature, being resistant to magic and unpleasant for mages to be close to.
  • Our Monsters Are Different: As a Fantasy Kitchen Sink, Koldenwelt has its own variations of many types of monsters, some more loyal to mythology than others.
  • Our Orcs Are Different: There are multiple factions of Orcs on Koldenwelt. While their relation between each other is not known, they are all classified as Deiwos. Orc subraces include the Lesha Orcs, the Black Orcs and the Karakon Orcs.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Koldenwelt's vampires are creations of the dark god Zran Kar and are divided in Pureblood Vampires, a race of bat-like monsters, and Halfblood Vampires, your typical large-fanged guy who got bitten in the neck by either a Pureblood or another Halfblood. Succubi and Incubi are a type of vampire rather than demons.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: Therianthropy is a far older curse than vampirism, and the setting isn't restricted to just werewolves. Things like wereravens, werehyenas and werecapybaras have all been either seen or mentioned.
  • The Paladin: Paladins in Koldenwelt are warriors who channel light magic through the power of light gods such as Lorchakim, Eostraeya or Alar'xashan.
  • The Phoenix: Subverted with the Echdrarothrayu. While they're called "Sun/Moon Phoenixes", they resemble humanoid birds rather than any kind of phoenix and don't have any relation to the whole "life and rebirth" cycle.
  • Plant Person: The Gardeners of the Garden of the Gods are angelic plant creatures.
  • Playing with Fire: Pyromancers, who practice fire magic.
    • Xacutus, an undead skeletal Ondarei Mharinis is considered the greatest pyromancer in the world. Such is his power that he once used volcanic activity to raise a magma bridge from the ocean floor between his island and the continent.
  • Poirot Speak: Inquisitor Nikola Blackmarsh during The Storm Chaser, to show off he came from the Saphronian Hetmanate.
  • Poisonous Person: Poison magic, which is considered close to nature magic. Practitioners of this are known as venomancers.
  • Pungeon Master: Jalaric Hathgar has the tendency to become this when excited, much to the chagrin of Hald-Sleac Kraasteg.
Hathgar: For a skeleton, you're really lacking... in backbone!
Hald-Sleac: Now is not the time!
  • Purple Is Powerful: A handful of gods, especially Kaicaiusarin, have a purple color scheme. Her realm of Pavor and its inhabitants are about 80% purple.
  • Raised by Wolves: The Merovar Earath had his family killed and was raised by Sand Drakes.
  • Raptor Attack: The Vulcaraptors of the Slumbering Isle are a race of intelligent, fire-breathing raptor people. They worship the Colossus of Fire and are fiercely territorial, being strong enough to rend an orc to pieces with their bare claws.
  • Rat Men: The Terefah Exalted, the rulers of the Vermin Kingdom.
  • Reference Overdosed: A very high number of characters are direct counterparts of characters from the SporeWiki Fiction Universe.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: King-Knight Diederich of Aynach is this among the Imperial Human nations, being far more reasonable and open to diplomacy than any of his peers. Due to his openness to interact with outsiders, he is often ignored by the Table of Governors, much to his annoyance.
  • Relationship Upgrade: After much fighting with one another and fighting side-by-side, Hachi and Clothovera finally paired up at the end of Into the Flesh Forest.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: Kyrieleth Dalverat, introduced in Doctrina Venefica, is a succubus who studies at the Grand Collegium for the sole purpose of education. Unlike her relatives, she's quite reserved about her love life. The fact she never tried to tempt any of her friends baffles them with they find out what she really is.
Pyrath: N-No way there's a... a succubus living with us. ... If ya a succubus, then why haven't ya tried tempting any of us yet?
Kyrieleth: C-Can we please not talk about my sex life? I believe what I do behind closed doors is not entirely your business.
  • Righteous Rabbit: Hachi, Kanna and Taka, who belong to the Lagosi race. Subverted with Min Lagosi, the largest Lagosi government, who is very much not nice and friendly.
  • Rodents of Unusual Size: The Terefah Pedigree, who are essentially giant rats.
  • Running Gag: Stories involving Big Beard Clamak always have a part where he's knocked off his feet. Due to his massive barrel-shaped body, he is unable to get himself back to on his own, sort of like a turtle. He always thanks whoever assists him up with a simple "Thank." If something sexy is happening, the Sea Witch will cast a spell to remove her own eyes and have an Eyeless Face, because she doesn't want to see none of that stuff.
  • Sanity Slippage: Vargash and the Crux enjoy doing this to their victims, though they use different methods. Vargash breaks you slowly and turns you into a loyal servant while the Crux outright turns you into a rabid animal.
  • Scaled Up: Tiritchik the Dragon transformed herself into a Linnwyrm-like dragon when she was confronted in The Storm Chaser.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The Simulacra Caligaduro Provectus, Kaicaiusarin and two of Ramainaualmari's incarnations, who were imprisoned away so they would not destroy/dominate the world in the past.
  • Shock and Awe: Electromancy, otherwise known as lightning magic, is one of the secondary elemental schools of the Source.
  • Sinister Scythe: Mortium's scythe, while mundane-looking, is a divine artifact able to instantly kill anything short of gods. It's one of the few weapons in existence that can easily and gravely wound other Simulacra.
  • Snake People: A few are present through the setting;
    • The Man-Serpents of the Sea of Sand are humanoids with serpent heads who serve Almonohuim, the Colossus of Sand.
    • The Khalmartia are the species of lamia-like beings who were defeated by the Oevrumine and today are a Vestigial Empire on the verge of extinction.
  • Spell Book: One of the many forms of magical catalyst available for magic users. Some, created by Zran Kar, are actually demons taking a book form, and have access to most information in the world, unless Zran Kar himself chooses to suppress it from their pages.
  • Spin-Off: Made to be a full fantasy equivalent to the SporeWiki Fiction Universe. While that setting focuses on Spore's Space Stage, the Fantasy Universe was initially based on the Tribal and Civilization stages, though at this point it only really uses Spore as an illustration tool.
  • The Starscream: Ramainaualmari, towards the rest of the Void. Caligaduro was defeated, so he came to the conclusion he was too weak be his master. Kaicaiusarin is implied to feel a similar way, but fears Caligaduro too much to act on it.
  • Start of Darkness: The short story Terminus tells how Constantius Castus became Imperator Kalarah.
  • Stripperiffic: Khadya is purposely scantily clad, despite living as a huntress of wild game. She does it just because she loves being sexy. While all the Dalverat Sisters are this, Alles Dalverat deserves special mention: she doesn't wear any underwear, only covering herself with a handful of leaves which really don't do a great job at hiding her lady parts from view.
  • Succubi and Incubi: Incubi and succubi, who are types of lesser vampire. They can sustain themselves both through blood and through sex.
  • Summon Magic: Rather uncommon, but it exists, typically involving denizens from other planes. The Shiarchon Prophet Maximilianus has been seen summoning lesser Void Denizens to aid him in combat.
  • Taken for Granite: Koldenwelti basilisks and cockatrices have the ability to turn people into stone through either bites or breath attacks.
  • That Man Is Dead: Xacutus' reaction to being called by his real name by Vectrom during Shroud of the Sun.
Xacutus: That... is NOT my name anymore!
  • They Walk Among Us: Humans are one of the least common races in the setting in comparison to everything else.
  • Time Abyss: The setting has characters of incredible age. The Old Colossi, while mostly dead, lived over thirty thousand years in the past and some have survived to this age. The ancient dragon Vixaatus is over two twelty five thousand years old, and the Simulacrum are widely seen as being as old as creation.
  • Time Master:
    • Manipulation of time is done through the magic school of chronomancy. It is effectively extinct in the current day, as its practitioners have all been destroyed long ago.
    • Kami the Primeval, the first of the Kamehebi, was a demigod with control over time, using it to shield himself from the demonic wars going through the world.
  • Tome of Eldritch Lore: The Incircumscriptus, the book owned by the Simulacrum of knowledge Zran Kar, has literally everything written on it except the future. There are also the tomes he spread through the world, such as the talking hex book Alhazred.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Hachi. First introduced as a bumbling fool who tripped on his own feet often, he has become a formidable warrior, willing to fight even Simulacra to protect his friends.
  • Treants: Some nature elementals take this form. The Laidarkin, a group of treants who inhabit Hyperion Island, are dedicated to protecting Laidar, the One-Eyed World Tree.
  • The Undead: The Endless Host are the most notable faction, being an entire empire of undead. However, they are not the only undead in the setting.
  • Unholy Holy Sword: The All-Knowing, a staff made by Zran Kar and given to Clothovera Moirai during her brief time as his servant remained with her after she was freed from him, and it served her quite well for a long time... until it took her over, leading to the events of Hysteria.
  • Vampire Vords: Varelos von Dalverat, ze first vampire, speaks like zis.
    • Some of Varelos' oldest daughters, Aurora and Dragostea, shared this with their dad during their earlier appearances.
  • Vertebrate with Extra Limbs: Very common considering the very nature of Spore's Creature Editor. Most dragons possess two pairs of limbs and a pair of wings, and the same is also true for multiple beast creatures such as Pureblood Vampires, Gryphosphinxes and Manticores.
  • Vestigial Empire: The Cobalt Kingdom, once one of the true immortal races and rulers of much of the east, are now only a shadow of the former glory, forced into the depths of the Ar-Klith Mountains.
  • Villain-Beating Artifact: Eostraeya's sacred fruit in Steel of the Plagued Land proved the only effective way to combat the otherwise Nigh-Invulnerable Mivtanreior.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Earath and Kanna. They bicker a lot (Kanna usually starts the argument), but they care a lot for one another.
    • Jalaric Hathgar and Hald-Sleac Kraasteg were this during their time together in The Goldhawk Chronicles.
  • Volcanic Veins: The Colossus of Fire Venertimanoth had them, being genuine lava which burned anything too close to the dragon if he so wished. The Akraksor, dragons born from Venertinamoth's corpse, also have them since they are living volcanoes.
  • Volcano Lair: Mount Pyronans for Xacutus.
    • Mount Gavakar for Finkrath, though in his case, he lives deep in the core of the volcano rather than near the crater.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Most of the Néva Kings could turn into a certain animals. For example, Nanuk the Bear had the ability to transform into a monstrous bear at will.
    • The Sea Witch can shapeshift into an albatross with a nice hat.
    • Incubi and succubi are able to freely change shape, though they're limited to only assuming the form of creatures of similar size to their own.
  • Was Once a Man: All Lympharians, with the exception of Harbinger, were once normal individuals who were converted into crystal monsters.
    • The Terefah used to be either men or elves until they were cursed and transformed into giant rats.
  • Wicked Witch: Alvinian Varaikar, most known as the Sea Witch. She got better, though.
    • Clotholaire Moirai is credited for probably having been the first witch, and she was quite wicked while she was possessed by Zran Kar.
  • Winged Humanoid: Most Avian beastmen and Lesser Kelodhres.
    • Norrigan of Aynach gained angelic wings upon his ascension.
    • Lorchakim, the New Colossus of Light, resembles a colossal human with angel wings.
  • Whatevermancy: Played straight with every school of magic, be it Source-born or alien, having their practitioners be referred to as "X-mancers". Fire users are pyromancers, water users are hydromancers, so on and so forth.
  • When Trees Attack: Eostraeya animated the roots of her sacred tree and used them against Khedrig Aldraem during Steel of the Plagued Land, ensnaring him and forcing him underground. That's what you get for angering Mother Nature.
Eostraeya: You shall serve as fertilizer to these trees!
  • White Magic: Light magic, one of the divine schools of the Source. Its practitioners are referred to as luxomancers.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Xacutus suffered from this. He attempted to use pyromancy to combat the Lympharian hordes attacking his people, but his race was fundamentally attuned to water rather than fire. The conflict within his very essence drove him completely mad.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Xacutus is perpetually covered in flames which allegedly cause him eternal pain. It only serves to make him angrier and crazier.
  • World Tree: Eondrassilia, the Old Colossus of Nature, was a titanic sequoia. She is said to have created all non-sapient life, and possibly the ancestors of sapients.
    • Laidar, the One-Eyed Tree, acts as a smaller World Tree for Hyperion Island in particular. His death would cause the total devastation of the island.
  • You No Take Candle: Done by a few, more primitive races such as Varkorian Goblins, Smeevers and Sarigandac. The fact all three of these are goblinoids is coincidence, as not every goblin in the setting speaks this way.
  • Your Normal Is Our Taboo: Use of dark magic is often considered a taboo by most races due to its evil properties and powers. However, there are a few cultures such as the Aithrena Elves and the Dalmiri who use dark magic with little impunity. The Aithrena are also known for cannibalism and for actively using the bones of their deceased as material for creating buildings, something which can be greatly insulting to other cultures.
