Twenty Years Later: Bunbunmaru Spirit News Archives is the second story in the sister series to the Touhou Doujin: Dawitsu's Folly fanfic series.

Tropes:

• Abuse Mistake: Hemi thinks Hatate was raping Youmu (or at least having rough sex with her) because they were in a room alone together and Youmu repeatedly said the word 'No' in varying levels of volume.
• Accidental Misnaming: Both Aya and Hatate have been guilty of this, with Aya getting Mima's name repeatedly wrong (calling her Mimi) and Hatate getting Jean's name wrong (calling him Michel.)
• A-Cup Angst: Youmu seems to suffer a little from it. While Hatate doesn't deny her flatness, she still attempts to tell her that being flat-chested isn't a bad thing.
• A Day in the Limelight: Not that she hadn't had a couple of moments in the limelight, especially earlier on in the series, but as Aya blatantly emphasizes, Aya had disappeared from the fic series entirely in the previous two books, and here, she gets a book all to herself... and Hatate. Also, the half-ghosts get a chapter to themselves.
• A God Am I: Subverted in that Minoriko Aki is a God, but since gaining an 'emerald of chaos', Minoriko Aki has Took a Level in Jerkass and has taken to lording over the mountain and demanding sacrifices.
• Alchemy Is Magic: The reason Yutaka is disqualified from the Science Fair is because of this trope.
• The Alcoholic: As well as Suika, naturally, Reimu appears to be driven to alcoholism by chapter 20, where she's being driven crazy by having to take care of a baby.
• All Love Is Unrequited: There seems to be a little of this in Youmu and the Half-ghosts. Namely, Hemi seems to have a tsundere thing for Youmu, and Semi seems to have undergone an Unrequited Love Switcheroo in regards to Demi, although there are hints he likes her back.
• All Periods Are PMS: Patchouli is particularly irritable in chapter twelve, which Yutaka attributes to her being on her period, which Patchouli rather understandably gets rather irate about (as they're talking to Aya.
• Ambiguously Gay: Hatate, to the point where one reviewer lampshaded it by saying 'Hatate gets confused for a (raging) lesbian a lot, doesn't she?' Another reviewer said that they now ship Seija and Hatate because of Hatate's (unintentional, or so she says) interactions with her. In addition, Hatate at one point indulges in some Suspiciously Specific Denial pertaining to her stalking Youmu Konpaku, who she has also taken pictures down the top of.
• Analogy Backfire / Metaphorgotten: Invoked by Hebiko in the poetry competition of Chapter 16. She references Sonnet 18 by opening with the classic 'Shall I compare thee to a summer's day' before applying various negative aspects of summer to the subject of the poem, before saying that summer really isn't all that romantic after all.
• The Atoner: Medicine Melancholy is this nowadays, due to reforming and regretting her murderous ways.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Chapter eighteen starts off with Hatate mentioning why she avoids the Scarlet Devil Mansion like the plague: 'It's bigger than it is on the outside, its maid can totally stop time and pincushion you with silver knives, and its décor is like, totally ugly!'
• Babies Make Everything Better / Children Are a Waste: Reimu's attitude to her adoptive baby, Patricia, is a zig-zag between these two tropes.
• Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: Seiji Kijin has this attitude, and therefore hates being loved.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: Aya tells Yukari's Oni Shikigami to stop signing. She talks out loud, making her flee in terror. Also, Seija Kijin wants to flip the entirety of Gensokyo, and when she does, she hates it, because everyone loves her, something she herself despises.
• Being Good Sucks: As Dawitsu finds out- dressing up as Santa and giving gifts to children only earns you being hassled by Aya.
• Big Bad Wannabe: Kogasa Tatara and Yutaka Hadekawa- the former becoming a Big Bad and the latter becoming a Karma Houdini Non-Action Big Bad by working together on an incident.
• Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: Aya responds to Eirin's massive deconstruction of her character by calling her a 'Big Meanie'. Eirin replies with, 'Well, that's mature.'
• Black Comedy: Chapter 15 is full of it, being centered around Hatate missing blatantly obvious hints that Tokage has been severely mentally and physically abused by Yuuka. Also, Reimu getting so frustrated that she threatens to throw her baby is a touch dark.
• Blatant Lies: Aya saying that she 'boldly fled in terror'. As well as many other things said by her, a lot pertaining to her method of entering houses. Also, pretty much anything said by Yuuka in chapter 15 involving denial of her abuse of Tokage. In chapter 20, a drunk Reimu calls Marisa a bitch, but when confronted, claims she called her a witch.
• Blue-and-Orange Morality: Aya's attitude to Dawitsu giving gifts to children, as well as her attitude to observing the world without talking or telling others, a concept Kagerou introduces her to. Also, Seija enjoys being hated and hates being loved, although this may merely qualify as Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad.
• Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Hatate's dating ad starts out innocuously enough before descending into the morbid fairly quickly- to quote: 'Like, lonely? Are you looking for that special someone in your life? Is your cripplingly non-existent love life crushing you with its continued non-existence? Are you, like, suicidal from your inability to keep with a person who can stand to be with you for like, twenty seconds? Well, like, never fear, because, there are, like, so many hot people who are, like, looking for love in your area!'
• Breaking the Fourth Wall: With absolutely no subtlety, courtesy of Aya in the foreword. She actively calls Duwee Davis II on neglecting her in recent books. Also, Seija Kijin flips Hatate, changing her interviewer name from 'Hatate' to 'etataH' on the actual text. In Chapter 21, the events Rumia recalls are from this set of comics, and she can't go any further in her memories because... of spoilers. This is said word for word by Aya, and Rumia concurs before coming up with an in-universe excuse (it's too traumatic).
• Breast Expansion: Thanks to alterations made by Yukari, Reimu's breasts are larger and lactate in order to help her feed her adoptive child, Patricia, as she was never pregnant with her. Hat atate simply sees this as an opportunity to use this bigger-breasted rendition of Reimu in a swimsuit edition of the paper.
• Brutal Honesty: A doozy from Hatate regarding Youmu's chest size. Youmu calls Hatate's perverted antics by saying 'Well, it's just you were rhapsodising about my 'cuteness' while taking pictures, some of which were down my top...', to which Hatate replies 'Like, don't flatter yourself, it's not like you have any chest to hide anyways...'. When Youmu asks her to repeat herself in disbelief, she simply says 'You, like, have no breasts.' Damn. Point-five also point-blank says that she doesn't want to be interviewed and that Hatate is obnoxious. Yutaka surprisingly does it too, telling Aya to just get over the fact she has a crush on Dawitsu, ask him out, get rejected, and get on with life.
• The Brute: Werewolves, according to Remilia.
• …But He Sounds Handsome: Instantly after being asked not to put words in his mouth, Aya adds some obviously false dialogue to Dawitsu's final line in his interview- 'Oh, by the way, you're looking particularly ravishing and I want you to have my mimicking parrot tengu babies'. This line comes completely out of left field and is seemingly just to satisfy Aya's vanity. Aya also refers to herself in third person as a 'Sexy Reporter'.
• Butt-Monkey: Dawitsu seems to be this- he does an extremely kind deed, but gets hated for it, is not allowed to forget it, and gets punched out by Reimu upon her discovery of a her Surprise Party, being unconscious for the majority of the aforementioned party.
• Buxom Beauty Standard: Tokage demands that any women who want to date her should have at least size C breasts.
• Canon Discontinuity: It seems that finally, Duwee Davis II has settled on the name of Aya and Hatate's joint paper being called the 'Bunbunmaru Spirit News'.
• Captain Obvious: Dawitsu remarks, 'Her precious tone really conflicts with her words.' when Reimu says to her adoptive baby, 'Oh, she's just crapped herself. Guess that's why she smiled. Who's a little sadist? You are! You're a little sadist that's come to ruin my life! Yes you are!'. Marisa wastes no time saying, 'Well done, Captain Obvious.'
• Cargo Ship: Implied in-universe by how Aya's press turned into a beautiful man during her Mushroom Samba, and she kisses it under a romantic moonlit view.
• Cassandra Truth: Subverted with Medicine Melancholy regarding whether she's reformed, as she seems to expect that people won't believe her, but only Aya seems to doubt it.
• Casual Kink: A drunk Reimu admits that she gets off on her breasts being sucked by her adoptive baby. Marisa says 'Gross', Chen says 'Too much information', and Ran says 'I can see where she's coming from'.
• Character Development: The two Scarlet Sisters and Medicine Melancholy. Remilia has become a bookworm and shut-in due to missing Patchouli, something mentioned by several characters, and Flandre has become a mathematical genius. Medicine has transitioned from Ax-Crazy to a Messianic Archetype Atoner.
• Cheaters Never Prosper: Double Subverted. Seiga is disqualified from the Science Fair for claiming to reanimate Yoshika with electrodes when in actuality, she was already reanimated, and Seiga thus subverts this trope by stealing the winning price- supposedly a rare talisman that attracts great amounts of faith. Turns out this talisman was a Placebo that only works because it is evidence of the winner of the Science Fair winning. So in other words, the real winner (Nitori) would be the only one gaining faith from the talisman in the first place.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: Semi reveals herself to have these feelings with regards to Demi. Also, a little of this behaviour is seen in Hemi for Youmu.
• Cloudcuckoolander: Aya, especially in chapters 14 and 21.
• Commander Contrarian: Seija Kijin disagrees with everything Hatate says, but this makes her easy to manipulate, as Hatate can simply tell her to do the opposite of what she wants her to do.
• Continuity Nod:
  • Firstly, to a deleted fanfiction of the author's, no less. Koakuma seemingly still hasn't given up on trying to steal Rinnosuke from Sakuya.
  • Another one is in the Science Fair article, referring to Aya's tendency to call her press 'Kenny' and refer to it as a friend, as well as Dawitsu destroying her press for the second time in the series (with Reimu breaking one in between these two times).
  • The reason Mima's in Former Hell in Reimu's Successor is revealed in this: Mima performed a prank involving ectoplasm and Reimu's soup, and in response, she sent her to Former Hell.
  • A nod to a Deviant Art one-shot of the author's is brought up in the article interviewing the Youmu and Half-ghosts.
  • Another nod to his Deviant Art works is in chapters eleven and twelve, referring to an incident Kogasa wanted to set up involving dry ice.
  • Not to mention Aya is still addicted to ink snorting and still breaks through walls to enter buildings, as the openings to several of her interviews imply (the articles themselves tend to have her 'entering politely')
  • Chapter seventeen has nods to Medicine's story arcs throughout Jean's Magical Education and Yutaka's Big Fat Youkai Wedding, including getting trapped in a vacuum cleaner and reforming.
  • Chapter nineteen shows that Minoriko Aki has been using her newfound time-controlling powers to set up a major shrine for herself, all thanks to her 'emerald of chaos', acquired from Dawitsu in Jean's Magical Education.
• Covert Pervert: Hatate, becoming increasingy less covert over time.
• Crossover: Of a sort, with another piece of touhou fanwork. Chapter 21 is one with this, or at the very least is a reference to this.
• Curse Cut Short: Reimu declares she's going to tear Marisa a new... before Hatate interrupts her.
• The Cynic: Fujiwara no Mokou somehow manages to be this in her own dating ad. She claims that she'd like to find someone who's cheating on their wife, so as to make them feel incredible guilt, simply to spite anyone who is ungrateful about their mortal lives.
• Damned by Faint Praise: After Aya says to Akyuu, 'Greetings, Miss Hieda! Congratulations on not dying before your eleventh birthday!', Akyuu tries to see such a remark as a compliment.
• Deadpan Snarker: Kagerou and Akyuu are remarkably snarky, especially given the continuity's track record. Reimu also seems to make every other line of hers a snark in her interviews, as well as Patchouli, who responds to Aya breaking into her house through the wall by remarking calmly to Yutaka, 'The next time she breaks one of our walls, we should kill her'. Eirin is also highly snarky, especially in Chapter seventeen. Marisa gets a few good snarks in chapter 20, too.
• Deathbringer the Adorable: Minoriko Aki tries to make her acquisition of power appear more awe-inspiring by claiming she received an 'emerald of chaos' from 'a mysterious youkai, borne of no original form of his own'. The youkai is actually the adorable Dawitsu, who's about as threatening as a fly.
• Death Seeker: Mokou is still this in spades.
• Depraved Bisexual: Boy, is Hemi ever. Her first sentence upon entering a room to be along with Hatate is 'So, when do we start the sex?'
• Despair Event Horizon: Aya casually claims to had reached this when 'Kenny the Third' got destroyed by Dawitsu for her slander in the first article, as mentioned the 'Hindsight' section of the Science Fair Article, and that's why she couldn't be bothered covering the story herself.
• Digging Yourself Deeper: Aya does this in her interview with Akyuu, and surprisingly, she comes off as a little sympathetic because it's clear that she genuinely has respect for her.
• Disability Superpower: Hatate thinks Koishi has become the Implacable Woman she has today because she injured her third eye.
• Disproportionate Retribution: Reimu sent Mima to Former Hell for 'sliming ectoplasm into her soup'. Also, her reaction to Marisa holding Jean's hand is to tear her a new... thing. She was interrupted before she could finish the threat.
• The Ditz: Both Hatate and Aya are pretty ditzy, and while Hatate's Valley Girl typing style makes her appear to be the more ditzy of the two, the evidence suggests that actually, Hatate's smarter than Aya.
• Does Not Like Men: According to Alice, Yutaka thinks that a man is 'a weak, excuse-making idiot who cheats on people and what have you'. Admittedly, the only man she's got to know properly would appear to be Dawitsu, but this is still an extreme stance.
• Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Akyuu has this attitude to Aya with regards to her pity for her short life.
• Do Wrong, Right: Yuuka Kazami seems to see Mima as terrible for not putting the 'Evil' in 'Evil Spirit' enough.
• Drugs Are Bad: Zigzagged. While Aya snorting ink leads to a full-on Mushroom Samba which ended up causing her to travel Gensokyo in her bra, in chapter seventeen, the reformed (and mostly benign and forgiving to the point of martyrdom) Medicine Melancholy offers opium to Eirin and Aya to defuse their argument, and it works. Also, Suika seems to wholeheartedly believe that alcohol makes everything better.
• Everybody Hates Mathematics: Hatate certainly does, and gets bored of Point-five's apparently enthusiastic discussion of fundamental universal constants.
• Experimented in College: Mokou claims to have had many lesbian phases and bi phases throughout her incredibly long life.
• Expospeak Gag: Rikako's 'Retroactive Space-time Distortion Device' is basically a Retcon machine which she implies has been used before. Also, Kogasa's 'adrenaline enhancement device' is simply a Jack in the Box that gives you an electric shock and surprises you.
• Face Palm: Used by Yukari's Oni Shikigami to denote exasperation.
• Fallen Angel: According to Aya's poor attempts to decipher Yukari's Oni Shikigami's Sign Language, the latter was once a God in Former Hell, but was kicked out for an unknown reason. The implication from this, along with her contractual silence and her name being 'Ten with something above it', being that this Oni is in fact Konngara.
• False Friend: Downplayed. Hatate claims she and Aya's friendship is perfectly smooth and problem-free, however, it's clear it isn't. Aya certainly doesn't see Hatate as a friend, so at the very least, one has to credit Hatate for at least trying to view Aya respectfully.
• Fangirl: Hatate seems to be one to Youmu, and somewhat creepily takes several photographs of her, some of which, according to Youmu, are down her top...
• Fanservice: Aya walking around in nothing but her bra. Subverted in that she's high, and some of the fanservice is negated due to her strange behavior.
• Felony Misdemeanor: When Hatate offers her thoughts on Aya's article demonizing Dawitsu for apparently attempting to form a religion, she thinks that Aya may have slightly exaggerated her claims. Not that Dawitsu's forming a Religion of Evil, no... the very idea that Dawitsu could find Aya attractive and not also find her attractive is inconceivable. While she's right to assume this as being false, her priorities are a tad skewed...
• Flat-Earth Atheist: Rikako has shades of this, similarly to canon. Seija outright denies the existence of Gods when Kanako certainly does exist, but only because she has to contradict all that is said to her (Hatate said 'Damn it', forcing her to say 'There is no God to damn people'). She then proceeds to deny Kanako's godhood by saying she's a kidney bean.
• Forgetful Jones: It's unknown whether or not Koishi plays this trope straight, partially due to Hatate being an Unreliable Narrator, and partially because she does seem to remember some people.
• Friend to All Children: Dawitsu was kind enough to want to give his class gifts for Christmas despite the region not knowing or caring about the holiday. Also, Koishi is apparently kind to any children that she plays with, playing patty-cake with the girls and kissing the boys.
• Freudian Slip: Yutaka secretly misses the Dawitsu Mansion and still thinks of it as home, as she refers to the mansion as 'our mansion', before stopping herself and calling it 'his (Dawitsu's) mansion'.
• Friendly Enemy: Reimu and Dawitsu become this, and drink tea together on Seija's Opposite Day.
• From Nobody to Nightmare: Ever since Minoriko Aki received an 'emerald of chaos' from a youkai that is most likely Dawitsu, she has been on quite a power trip.
• Fun with Palindromes: Seija has a lot of fun with palindromes in her entry to chapter 16's poetry competition, though Alice seems to think its some kind of demonic ritual (most likely due to many of her palindromes involving 'Satan' or 'Devil').
• Fur Against Fang: Referenced in Aya's article on werewolves, as she asked Remilia about the species and naturally got a slightly biased account on werewolves from the young vampire.
• The Gadfly: Hemi, Point-five, and Yukari's Oni Shikigami all act as this in their own way. Hemi through Refuge in Audacity, Point-five through her regular use of Mathematician's Answer, and Yukari's Oni through being a Silent Snarker (Who reveals herself to be totally capable of speech, and is only trolling Aya.).
• Gay Moment: Aya begins to talk of 'the stories Hatate and I have documented during our many years together', before realizing that this could be misconstrued as them being a gay couple together. Hatate also seems to have several, with Youmu, Hemi and Reimu.
• Gender Bender: Akyuu apparently has occupied both male and female bodies throughout her many incarnations. Dawitsu also expresses a desire to be a woman in Chapter 16, albeit in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
• Genius Bonus: A fair few in the Science Fair chapter. For example, Nitori's way of producing Ammonia is a reference to the Haber Process, and Point-five's 'ramblings' about constants as well as 'planks, avocados, Fridays, [and] riding icebergs' is a reference to Planck's Constant, Avogadro's Constant, the Faraday Constant, and the Rhydberg Constant. Also, Flandre and Point-five's huge mathematical discussion in chapter eighteen would lose a few readers.
• Genki Girl: Hatate seems impossibly excited about everything, and is noticeably positive about Aya's work while Aya berates Hatate's work instead.
• Gentleman and a Scholar: Given that Jean is already pretty much the nicest person in the series, and his recently-revealed ability (that he never realized was particularly special) to remember Koishi Komeiji possibly qualifies him as a genius of Buddhism, Jean may well be this.
• Get Out!: Both Youmu and Semi tell Hatate to do this after her largely inappropriate interviews with them. Patchouli barely acknowledges Aya upon her entry, but when she does, her first line is 'Hello. Get out of our house'.
• Girl on Girl Is Hot: Dawitsu clearly still thinks this is the case, as he mentions that if he were a girl he'd lez out and enjoy girl on girl in Chapter 16.
• Gossipy Hens: Aya, of course.
• Graceful Loser: Yutaka is this about being disqualified from the Science Fair due to performing an act more similar to Alchemy than Magic (transforming Ash into Diamonds). Seiga averts this by stealing the winner's prize after being disqualified.
• Hand Signals: Yukari's Oni Shikigami talks through these, in an odd manner bordering on the incomprehensible.
• Hard Work Hardly Works: Averted with Akyuu's treatment of Keine's gift, which required a trip to the netherworld to make- Akyuu truly appreciates it, and chides Aya for undermining it.
• Head-Turning Beauty: Aya appears to think she has this effect on any males that see her. The truth of her claim is dubious, to say the least.
• Heel–Faith Turn: Along with becoming a better person, Medicine Melancholy appears to have converted to Buddhism.
• Heroic BSoD: Aya encounters Rumia in the middle of one of these in Chapter 21, and it turns out it's due to having a fear of the outside world after a traumatizing set of events for her.
• Heroic Self-Deprecation: Most of Hebiko's Dating Service Profile consists of this.
• Hidden Depths: Point-five, the extremely quiet drummer from Youmu and the Half-Ghosts, is fascinated by the fundamental constants of the universe. Also, Jean seems to think Byakuren secretly wants to be like Koishi Komeiji- truly care-free.
• Honey Trap: Hatate pretends to be one as a joke to Jean.
• Horrible Judge of Character: Hatate seems to think that Yuuka is 'spreading joy and happiness', when it is blatantly obvious she is merely torturing Tokage for the sake of it. Aya seems to think Hatate is deliberately seeing the events incorrectly, however, and if this is the case, this is a subversion.
• Hypocritical Heartwarming: Hemi seems to have this attitude towards Youmu, telling Hatate that only she's allowed to make Youmu feel uncomfortable.
• Hypocritical Humor: Aya accuses Dawitsu of lying, something she'd never do...
  • In addition, Aya asks Reimu about her attempts to stop a chanting ritual by saying 'How hard is it to stop talking?', with Reimu lampshading her hypocrisy.
• I Am Very British: Hatate speaks in this manner after being flipped into the not-reporter etataH.
• Identical Stranger: Aya lampshades Patricia's similarity in looks to Reimu despite supposedly being an adoptive child, and comes to the conclusion that she's not adopted at all, but, in fact, the love baby of Reimu and a mystery man.
• Ignore the Disability: Aya seems to take an attitude similar to this with regards to Akyuu's supposedly short lifespan. Not that she does it particularly well, but still...
• I Just Want to Be Normal: Reimu says she doesn't like being the center of attention, though Hatate doubts her sincerity.
• I Just Want to Be You: Yutaka apparently wants to be just like Dawitsu, with people coming to her for advice on causing incidents.
• I'm a Humanitarian: Rumia claims she still eats people, despite now being frightened of outsiders beyond all reason. Aya claims human-eating youkai are savages.
• Implacable Man: Koishi Komeiji.
• Incompatible Orientation: Youmu reminds Ambiguously Gay Hatate that she doesn't swing that way.
• Ineffectual Loner: Reimu comes off as this a little.
• Insane Troll Logic: Aya operates by this throughout her interview with Kagerou.
• Insufferable Genius: Hatate treats Rikako Asakura like one, and she seems a tad truthful in this opinion.
• Insult to Rocks: In chapter seventeen, Aya asks if Eirin thinks she is less reliable than a murderess. Eirin replies that she knows she is.
• Intrepid Reporter: Aya claims herself to be one multiple times.
• I Resemble That Remark!: Subverted. Hatate considers Demi's accent to be cool, but doesn't seem to put two and two together that she probably likes it so much because she speaks in the exact same way.
• Jack the Ripoff: Kogasa does a non-lethal version of this pertaining to incidents- she quite clearly is ripping off Remilia Scarlet's 'Scarlet Mist' incident with her own incident, something Remilia herself calls 'totally unoriginal'.
• Jerkass: Aya.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Aya outright deconstructs Minoriko Aki's power trip ('You know, most people who were once weak and bullied tend to be kind to the weak once they gain power, but clearly you just see this as an opportunity to be a bully yourself.') and torments her by taking away her chaos emerald, you can't help but root for her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Her solid respect of Akyuu is rather heartwarming in a way, given her almost piteous attitude to most humans.
• Just a Kid: Aya admits she has trouble not treating Akyuu like this, and her unintentional patronization of her results in Akyuu not being best pleased with her.
• Karma Houdini: Yutaka was one of the main contributors to Kogasa's mist incident, but doesn't get confronted by the people who solved it at all.
• Killer Rabbit: Hatate treats Flandre like one, calling her adorable and unable to hurt a fly.
• Last of His Kind: Nue seems to worry that this is the case for her, and she actually claims that she'd be willing to stop being a Shapeshifting Seducer to settle down with a member of her own species.
• Law of Inverse Fertility: In chapter 20, Ran and Dawitsu appear to latch onto baby Patricia, and offer to take her off Reimu's hands every now and then, with Ran even saying 'I've always wanted to hold a baby in my hands...'- yet, as the Epilogue and Reimu's Successor show, at least one of them appears to be infertile.
• Limited Wardrobe: Referenced by Dawitsu, who says 'What the hell? This was the nicest copy of my suit!' in response to being vomited on by Drunk!Reimu.
• Literal-Minded: Inverted with Hatate in chapter 20, who assumes that when Reimu mentions that Patricia was 'delivered', assumes she means the figurative sense of a midwife delivery. Similarly, when Reimu says 'she doesn't know who the father is', she assumes this means Reimu's been sleeping around.
• Logic Bomb: Hatate gives one to Commander Contrarian Seija, who proceeds to faint because of it (she tells her to not stop contradicting her).
• Mad Scientist: Surprisingly, with exception of Seiga (who fails in the category of 'scientist' anyway), all the members of the Science Fair that Hatate covers avert this trope.
• Make It Look Like an Accident: A non-fatal variant on this trope in Chapter 15, in which Yuuka physically abuses Tokage while either making it seem accidental while she performs some kind of over-the-top mannerism, or blames it on Tokage's own clumsiness.
• Magikarp Power: An allusion to the inspiration for the Trope Namer is made in Chapter 19, in which Aya refers to how a carp can become a dragon by jumping over the gates of the Dragon Palace.
• The Matchmaker: Hatate has her fun in her dating ad, acting precisely as this. She even claims to have a 'Love Fairy' in her house.
• Mathematician's Answer: Point-five gives a few in Hatate's interview with her, which makes sense because a few chapters ago, it was established she's an enthusiastic mathematician.
• Megaton Punch: Reimu punches Dawitsu out cold in one hit. This doesn't seem like a big deal, until you remember that Dawitsu is a youkai, and Reimu is a human, in this case using non-magical abilities.
• Moe: It's painfully obvious that in-universe, Hatate sees Youmu as this, given how often she reiterates how cute she is.
• Metaphorically True: One of the many ways Yuuka somehow convinces Hatate that she isn't being abusive towards Tokage, in which when Tokage answers to Hatate's question of 'So, what other plants are you and your playmate growing?' with 'Despair! Death and despair!', Yuuka saves herself by saying (before hitting Tokage on the head to shut her up), 'In a... figurative sense. I'll be growing plenty of Higanbana, famous for their poison content.'
• Mood-Swinger: Reimu swings smoothly from crying over Jean not being attracted to her to accusing Hatate of hitting on her within seconds, with Hatate lampshading it by saying 'Like, WHAT? How fast does your mood swing?'
• Mushroom Samba: Aya writes an article on one she has (presumably thanks to snorting ink) and seems to think it was reality, as she simply calls it 'the strangest day ever'.
• Necromancer: While claiming to be a Frankenstein-esque scientific reanimator of the dead, Seiga is this in the Science Fair.
• Nephewism: Apparently, Tengu society revolves around this, with most kids not being raised by their parents, but by their aunts and uncles.
• Never My Fault: Aya has this attitude regarding her Mushroom Samba, instead blaming Yukari Yakumo, and later, a non-existent incident causer that she assumes altered the entire world to be nonsensical and traumatized 'millions'. Hatate doesn't buy her crap.
• Never Say That Again: Reimu says this to Hatate after she refers to her as a 'girlfriend'.
• New Old Flame: Semi seems to view Demi this way, but persistently denies this.
• Nice Guy: Demi seems to see the best in everyone. He considered Point-five calling Hatate obnoxious as 'her way of telling her she likes her'. He even seems to be slow to condemn the Dragon Prince for his perverted antics in his interview.
• Noble Savage: Aya treats the perfectly civilized Kagerou like this, seeming to think that werewolves are enlightened in a different way to 'civilised youkai', but have sacrificed politeness to do so.
• Non-Action Big Bad: Yutaka is one to Kogasa's mist incident, being the provider of the huge amounts of dry ice required, and never gets confronted to the solvers of the incident. Overlaps with Karma Houdini.
• Non-Mammal Mammaries: Hatate mentions that in Tengu society, breasts aren't used to breast-feed, but instead, like birds, they pre-chew (pre-digest in birds) food for their nephews and nieces and spit it back out into their mouths.
• Not Allowed to Grow Up: Lampshaded by Hatate, who mentions that despite humans' relatively short lifespan, it seems that Reimu has been young for ages. The actual story averts it, as Reimu becomes twenty years old by chapter eleven.
• Note from Ed.: A la Grimoire, Forbidden Love, and Misadventures of the previous series, each chapter ends with a note from either Aya or Hatate, basically, whoever hasn't written the article itself.
• The Not-Love Interest: Yutaka still appears to feel this way about Dawitsu, something Patchouli is painfully aware of, she herself feeling like a Satellite Love Interest.
• Not Now, Kiddo: While not young, Hatate gets disregarded handily when she attempts to butt into Flandre and Point-five's heated mathematical debate.
• Not-So-Harmless Villain: Kogasa actually manages to surprise Hatate by actually joining the Science Fair. She also has a device similar to a Jack in the Box which zaps you with electricity. Kogasa has another shining moment where she surprises everyone by faking out Aya, not once, but twice, as she first pretends she's causing an incident, but isn't, then later causes the same faked incident for real when everyone thought she'd given up! Positively surprising.
• Not-So-Imaginary Friend: Someone has a presentation on the subconscious mind in the Science Fair article, however, Hatate can't quite remember who it is, so presumably it is Koishi Komeiji, who behaves in this manner. This is later confirmed in a different article.
• Not So Omniscient After All: Most likely what happened with regards to the Tengu society not noticing werewolves, however, Aya seems to think that it was instead because werewolves are tribal recluses which in turn have no knowledge of the world, hence the world doesn't know about them.
• Older Than They Look: Reimu laments this about herself after Hatate says, at the age of twenty, she still has a girl's face, as she wants Jean to like her.
• The Omniscient: Aya seems to think the Tengu as a whole are this, and anything the Tengu are unaware of must be so isolated from society that they themselves know nothing of the world.
• Once Done, Never Forgotten: Aya makes sure anyone who's ever wronged anyone, at all, never lives their sins down. Most notably, the now-reformed Medicine Melancholy is treated in this manner by Aya.
• Only in It for the Money: Implied by both Aya and Hatate in the foreword. Both mention that the selling of the archives as a means to make money either accidentally before attempting to divert attention from that fact, or by claiming the money goes towards 'charity'.
• Opposite Day: Seija Kijin induces one with her powers, but switched it back after realising that everyone loved her, which she disliked greatly.
• Pædo Hunt: Aya seems to think Corey from Chapter 21 is one of these, but, as Rumia keeps insisting, he is/was something a lot more sinister.
• Paparazzi: Aya is most certainly one, however, so far there has been no evidence to suggest Hatate has the same attitude.
• Past-Life Memories: How Aya at least sees Akyuu's ability to retain the knowledge of the Gensokyo Chronicle. Also, while he doesn't remember what Myouren did in his life, Jean seems to have inherited some of his enlightenment, although he doesn't seem to think so.
• Pet the Dog: Both reporters' relationships with Reimu are ones of distant, yet concerned and caring friends, even if Reimu, on the surface, rejects them as such. Aya is concerned for Reimu's welfare, and Hatate tries to pick her up when her self-esteem is running low.
• Placebo Effect: The first place prize for Kanako's Science Fair is a placebo talisman that apparently bestows faith upon the owner.
• Power Perversion Potential: Nue exploits the living hell out of her Voluntary Shapeshifting, if her Dating Profile is anything to go by.
• Purple Prose: Tokage writes her descriptions of both herself and her ideal man or woman like this in the 'Dating Service' chapter.
• Pyromaniac: Mokou, in spades. She writes a poem about how she intends to set the moon on fire, and in chapter 23, she appears to think that everyone else should be pyromaniacs just like her.
• Reality Warper: Rikako Asakura is potentially one, with the help of her 'Retroactive Space-time Distortion Device'.
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: Aya is Blue to Hatate's Red, although that's only by virtue of Hatate being a Genki Valley Girl.
• Religion of Evil: Dawitsu's attempt to give children gifts on Christmas Eve is viewed as this by Aya.
• Repressed Memories: If Aya is correct, Hatate could be doing a form of this trope to see Yuuka's abuse of Tokage in an ignorant, positive light.
• Retcon: The Retcon in canon between the PC-98 Touhou Games and the Windows Games is referenced by the potential effects of Retroactive Space-time Distortion Device built by Rikako Asakura.
• Reverse Psychology: Hatate has to resort to this in her interview with Seija.
• Ridiculously Cute Critter: Hatate treats baby Patricia Hakurei as this, and notably, Reimu herself doesn't think this is the case at all.
• Ritual Magic: Reimu performed a ritual to send Mima to Former Hell. Even stopping midway through completed the effect.
• Robot Master: Rika builds an 'Evil Eye Omega' battle tank for the Science Fair covered by Hatate.
• Ron the Death Eater: Applied in-universe to Dawitsu and Kagerou Imaizumi by Aya. The former gets treated as a dastardly religious crusader by Aya for dressing up as Santa and giving gifts to children, and the latter gets treated like a savage moron because she happened to evade the knowledge of Tengu community for so long.
• Running Gag: Aya's tendency to smash walls and snort ink, and Hatate coming off as a lesbian accidentally.
• Santa Clausmas: Dawitsu discusses this in order to show that he's not trying to introduce Christianity to Gensokyo in order to steal faith, and out and out states that Santa has little to nothing to do with Christianity, and is a commercially fueled character slightly based on the real Saint Nicholas. Aya seems to think that this means Dawitsu wants to invent a religion of Santa Clausmas, but this is likely untrue.
• Satellite Love Interest: Patchouli begins to feel like one to Yutaka, and is painfully aware of Yutaka's obsession with Not-Love Interest Dawitsu.
• Science Fair: Kanako hosts one in the story covering said Science Fair.
• Sdrawkcab Name: Hatate, when flipped by Seija, becomes 'etataH', and becomes a rather posh girl.
• Shapeshifting Seducer: Nue seems to believe that she is highly attractive due to being able to shapeshift into whatever her partner wants.
• Shout-Out: Oddly enough, Nue makes one to Tigger's song on how the wonderful, wonderful thing about tiggers is he's the only one. Also, Seiga makes a reference to Frankenstein by 'reanimating' Yoshika with electrodes at a Science Fair. Another subtle one is made to TomServo3's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Youtube Poops in Aya's description of a scene from her Mushroom Samba as having crowds of kittens, puppies, cows, and old men, however, the aforementioned Last-Second Word Swap is averted when Eirin turns into an Old Sack. Another Shout-Out in the Mushroom Samba of Chapter 14 is to Thomas & Friends, as Aya mistakes what is probably Reisen as a blue steam train with a number one on it. In Chapter 15, there's a Shout-Out to A Song of Ice and Fire, in the form of a traumatized Tokage repeating, 'Reek, Reek, it rhymes with [insert word rhyming with Reek here]'. Hebiko references William Shakespeare in Chapter 16,and in the very same chapter, Dawitsu references Beyoncé's 'If I were a boy'. Chapter 19 has an allusion to Pokémon's use of Magikarp Power, as well as involving Minoriko Aki's 'emerald of chaos'.
• Silent Snarker: Yukari's Oni Shikigami is both this and The Gadfly to Aya. Ultimately subverted in that she reveals she can speak, but just chooses not to.
• Small Name, Big Ego: Cirno and Tokage in the 'Dating Service' chapter, and to a lesser extent, Aya overall. As the story goes on, Aya becomes more and more Flanderized in this regard.
• Small, Secluded World: Aya seems to think werewolves live in one of these.
• Snark-to-Snark Combat: A lot of the interviews have some form of this.
• Sonnet: Raiko Horikawa submits a sonnet to the poetry competition in Chapter 16, and 'cheats' by dropping the occasional syllable. In fact, due to her rhythm-based powers in Canon, the subject of the poem is all about keeping to the beat structure of a sonnet.
• The Speechless: Yukari's Oni Shikigami. Except when she isn't.
• Squee: Hatate has a tendency to do this, especially so in Chapter 20, where she founds out Reimu has an (adopted) baby, and does nothing but squee over the baby the entire time despite Reimu and others pointing out how hard it is to raise a child.
• Stalker with a Crush / Stalker without a Crush: Aya may be one or the other. Dawitsu seems to imply that he thinks she's the former, however, Aya seems to have an attitude that would claim she's the latter. Regardless of what motivates her, she has stalked Dawitsu to find out what dastardly, horrible antics he was up to...
• Stealth Insult: Aya tries this on Kagerou, however, Kagerou easily notices and slips in some genuine instances of this trope to Aya herself.
• The Stoic: Point-five.
• Surprise Party: For Reimu's twentieth birthday, Suika, Marisa, Jean, Dawitsu, and eventually Hatate get in on a plot to make Reimu go out to investigate an (actually in earnest according to Deviant Art works) apparently false incident, while they prepare a surprise party. Reimu's response is to punch Dawitsu unconscious.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial: Hatate's denial of stalking Youmu Konpaku, Aya's denial that she has a crush on Dawitsu. Also, Yuuka's denial of he abuse of Tokage, to quote, 'Whatever are you implying? That I kidnapped Tokage, tortured her and attempted to force a new identity known as Reek upon her, and have taken her with me into a half-deadly sunflower patch to let her wounds sting in the pollen-filled air?'
• Tampering with Food and Drink: Mima apparently 'slimed ectoplasm into [Reimu's] soup' as a prank.
• Take That!: Chapter 21 has one to modern humanity, with Aya talking about how 'most outsiders taste a little smoky, and some are full of salt and fat'.
• "Take That!" Kiss: Aya delivers one to Minoriko Aki while mocking her relentlessly.
• That Liar Lies: Ironically, Aya accuses Dawitsu of this.
• The Illuminati: According to Remilia Scarlet, they're merely an organized group of werewolves that gathered in their struggles against vampires.
• The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Akyuu references this trope, saying that while she keeps her previous reincarnations' memories, her personality changes with each body.
• Think Nothing of It: Jean doesn't seem to think there's anything weird about remembering Koishi Komeiji, and doesn't consider himself particularly special because of it, and is rather confused at the idea that others forget her as soon as she leaves their sight.
• There Was a Door: Reimu once again chastises Aya for breaking her wall instead of entering via door.
• Token Evil Teammate: Hemi is this to the half-ghosts, bordering on Flanderization compared to her initial characterization.
• Tom the Dark Lord: The mentioned 'Corey' in Chapter 21 is clearly someone evil enough to take control of Rumia and force her to ill her own friends, and Aya even bursts into laughter at the idea that someone so evil could be named 'Corey'.
• Took a Level in Jerkass: Hemi, Aya, and Minoriko.
• True Art Is Incomprehensible: Hatate votes for Seija's poem according to her note on Chapter 16, not because of its palindromic nature, but because 'Abstract art is like, so intellectual!'
• Try to Fit That on a Business Card: Minoriko Aki's new title is 'Minoriko Aki, Goddess of the Harvest, Seasons, and the Flow of Time itself.'
• Tsundere: Aya has a moment in her interview with Dawitsu, temporarily softening to him when he asks if they are friends, before instantly switching back to accusing him of being a religious crusader. Also, Reimu is still this in spades, seemingly even having a soft spot for Mima deep down in her heart. Hemi is also one to Youmu, coupling with Hypocritical Heartwarming.
• Unknown Character: Werewolves are a whole species of them to the tengu.
• Unreliable Narrator: Aya, so, so much. Hatate at times, as well.
• Unsexy Sadist: Yuuka, as of Chapter 15. Despite the general comic feel of the fanfic, either the writer delved too little into Black Comedy, or bypassed comedy altogether for Yuuka, as reviewers noted that Yuuka's actions disturbed them, feeling sorry for her victim, Tokage.
• Vague Age: All of the Canon Characters that take part in the Dating Service give very vague answers with regards to their age.
• Valley Girl: Hatate even types like a Valley Girl. Strangely enough, though, she's far from The Ditz, and is at times far smarter than Aya.
• Walking Shirtless Scene: One of Tokage's excessive demands of what is required in her ideal man.
• Weaksauce Weakness: Subverted with werewolves' weakness to Wolfsbane- as the flower is poisonous to humans in a high enough dosage. Played straight with their weakness to silver.
• Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Various suggested names for Patricia Hakurei included 'Jackie Hakurei' (suggested by Dawitsu), 'Marisa Hakurei' (suggested by Marisa), 'Sake Hakurei, Wine Hakurei, and Vodka Hakurei' (suggested by Suika) and 'Reimu Hakurei' (suggested by Reimu herself).
• Who's Your Daddy?: Referenced, but averted with Patricia- while both her biological parents are unknown, Reimu, nor anyone else, really care, though Marisa does use it as an opportunity to jokingly claim Jean is the father.
• Woman Child: Aya is one, as Hatate of all people lampshades.
• Worthy Opponent: Aya views Akyuu as a worthy competitor with the Tengu in terms of information gathering, and seems desperate to be respected by her.
• Yes-Man: Akyuu accuses Aya of being an ass-kisser to make up for accidentally insulting her.
• You No Take Candle: Aya talks to Kagerou like this, assuming she's a tribal moron.
