    Raelle Collar

Raelle Collar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raelle_collar_5.jpg
Portrayed by: Taylor Hickson
"If you want someone who blindly follows orders, then you might as well send me back home."

A reluctant recruit with major authority issues whose mother recently died in the line of duty.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Raelle, a tomboyish lesbian, keeps hers up in a short style initially. Then she has it down in Seasons 2 and 3, however it's still not that long, only just reaching her shoulders.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Played with. While she still has access to the witchbomb and is, obviously, a very powerful witch and fixer, when she returns from her time in the Mycelium, she is no longer immortal.
  • Broken Bird: Raelle starts as so depressed over the loss of her mother she wants to die, with a bitter, jaded personality. Gaining a girlfriend and friends who she deeply loves changes this.
  • Butch Lesbian: Raelle is short haired, tomboyish and soon gets involved with another witch at Fort Salem, Scylla. She later confirms that she's no bisexual when she adamantly insists that she's not interested in men.
  • Coup de Grâce: With her scourge to one of the Spree leaders who shape-shifted to look like Scylla.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Raelle's mom was killed in combat a year prior to the start of the show and she is looked down on for having a civilian father. At the start of the show, Raelle is depressed and on a suicide mission to flunk out of basic training and die on the front lines.
  • Death Seeker: Her original plan after enlisting was to flunk out of military training and get sent to the front lines to be essentially cannon fodder.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She starts off the show as a bitter, jaded loner, but her relationships with Tally, Abigail, and Scylla gradually get her to lighten up considerably, with Raelle showing genuine love for them all.
  • Empathic Healer: How Raelle's healing works, she takes at least some part of the wound or illness from the people she cures. Subverted when she heals Khalida after having touched the Mycelium. Raelle herself points out she should've gotten part of the illness, even if just a bit, but it's completely gone, alerting her that something is wrong.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Raelle, the child of a witch mother and muggle father, gets this a bit. Mostly it's just mild disapproval. In the Imperatrix's case, she openly tells Raelle to "choose better" than her mother did and marry a male witch (which implies she shouldn't exist). Raelle doesn't take this well of course (nor is she interested anyway, being a lesbian-the Imperatrix dislikes that as well).
  • Has a Type: After she confesses to finding Libba cute, Tally teases that between Libba and Scylla, Raelle clearly goes for dark-haired troublemakers.
  • Healing Hands: Her specialty is healing magic, with laying on hands shown as part of the method.
  • Heirloom Engagement Ring: Uses the ring her mother gave her as an impromptu engagement ring when proposing to Scylla.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Played straight at first, but then subverted. Raelle starts out only wanting to die, depressed over her mother dying, intent on failing training since then she'll be used as cannon fodder. Then despite herself she falls for another woman and gets some close friends among her fellow cadets. Because of this, Raelle shapes up and gets to be quite skilled with her magic.
  • I Thought Everyone Could Do That:
    • Raelle displays unusually strong abilities, combined with her "Christo-Pagan" spells. Her mother was also known to have unusual healing methods.
    • She apparently has special abilities that make her valuable in the eyes of the Spree.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: In her heart she's a kind and deeply compassionate person, but her unwanted fate of what's essentially military slavery gives her few opportunities to show her brighter side. Most of the time she's bitter and cynical, yet she can always be relied upon to do the right thing when it comes down to it. She does slowly grow warmer with her friends and her girlfriend though, genuinely believing in them.
  • Love Is a Weakness: Raelle's feelings for Scylla often cause her to act rashly.
  • The Medic: She is naturally gifted with a strong ability to heal others, a trait which has been in her family for generations, though her method is described as "Christo-Pagan" and is looked down on with suspicion.
  • Misery Builds Character: Raelle has this in spades, especially after Scylla goes missing and then when she learns Scylla is part of the Spree. This turns her into a Heartbroken Bad Ass.
  • Missing Mom: Raelle's mom supposedly died serving in combat a year prior to the series' start. Abigail tells her that she died an honorable death, but Raelle's not comforted, saying she'd probably just wanted to go home. The first season finale reveals she's still alive, and has joined the Spree.
  • One-Woman Army: Raelle is this starting from the beginning of the second season thanks to the seed of the mycelium within her that has given her further highly destructive abilities, which lead Alder to describe Raelle literally both as a bomb and their most precious secret weapon.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Raelle still feels guilty about her last words to her mother being part of an argument.
  • The Quiet One: Raelle is the most reserved and soft-spoken of the main trio. She does show genuine affection to her loved ones, but still in a more quiet manner usually, with her hidden temper showing sometimes as well.
  • Religion is Magic: To heal, Raelle uses a quote from the Gospel of Matthew as a chant, which her patient repeats with her.
  • Reunion Kiss: She has one with Scylla in episode 1x07, then later again in 2x08 and then AGAIN in 3x08 when she rescues Scylla from the Slaughterhouse.
  • Simplified Spellcasting: Although most spells need to be performed via song, Raelle is able to cast some spells through the recitation of slightly modified Bible verses.
  • Stopped Caring: Due to the death of her mother, Raelle initially has a death wish. She enters basic training not caring about herself or anyone else. Later subverted however. She gains a lover and friends among her fellow cadets, whom she's very caring toward (albeit in a subdued, quiet way).
  • Synchronization: Played with, as Raelle has a magical link to Scylla that allows Scylla to transmit messages to her via their palms. They don't share sensations otherwise.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the finale of the first season, as a consequence of her symbiotic contact with the mycelium, Raelle, in addition to obtaining the ability to be able to resurrect herself every time she dies, obtains a significant increase in her magic that gives her a series of unique abilities (such as being able to create a considerable explosion capable of transforming any enemy into a whole with the fungal properties of the mycelium itself). Furthermore, she and Izadora discover that this symbiosis has significantly increased her ability to vocalize since the Mycelium is none other than that remains of the magical essence of all witches when they die since the time of Salem. Consequently Raelle herself has been chosen as the spokesperson for their collective power. Scylla is not wrong in considering her as one of the most powerful witches around.
  • Too Much Alike: With Abigail. They often butt heads due to both of them being so stubborn.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Raelle has a few: her mother's war protection totem, her mother's conscription medal, the bird skull corsage she gifted Scylla, and Porter Tippet's scourge.
  • Unconventional Wedding Dress: She wears a very short skirt (or dress) with a tailored jacket and boots to her wedding. Traditional bridal attire is simply not the tomboyish Raelle's style.
  • Was It All a Lie?: She asks Scylla this in episode 1x09, after learning Scylla's with the Spree, seducing her to get close. Scylla insists that it wasn't, but Raelle doesn't believe this. However later on she realizes it's true and they reconcile, starting their relationship again.

    Abigail Bellweather

Abigail Bellweather

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abigail_bellweather.jpg
Portrayed by: Ashley Nicole Williams
"Obviously you're familiar with the Bellweather name ..."

An unquestionably alpha, smart, driven and courageous witch who hails from the upper echelons of military witch society and is excited to be joining the ranks of the witches' army.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Raelle comes to call her "Abs" with affection.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Averted. All of Abigail's romantic interests are shown to be kind, with Abigail even saying that she likes that Clive has a good attitude.
  • Alpha Bitch: Abigail is the latest scion of the wealthy, illustrious Bellweather family, and is obsessed with living up to her family name, to the point that she tries to get reassigned to a new unit after fearing that Raelle will hold her back (which would mean abandoning Tally in the process). Alder turns her down flat. She warms up though after getting to know her unit mates better, and befriends both. Later she no longer wants a reassignment, but says she'll ensure that they're up to standard. She eventually considers them both her sisters.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: She sometimes uses uncommon, old-fashioned insults.
  • Blind Obedience: Abigail is dutifully faithful to Fort Salem and witch traditions.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Enlisted witches are forbidden from consorting with civilian men, so the first episode sees Abigail dumping her boyfriend and using magic to make sure he forgets about her.
  • The Chosen One: Her weather manipulation powers make her the "Sky" in an unspecified "union of Earth and Sky" the Camarilla are trying to prevent. Eventually it turns out the Bellweather line had power over earth as well all along, making Abigail the final Steward of the First Song
  • Extra Parent Conception: Abigail has three fathers, and not just in the emotional sense. Somehow, each one's best genes were used for conceiving her (probably with magic).
  • Famous Ancestor: Her ancestor was Jem Bellweather, one of the first witches in the American military, and the greatest weather-manipulator in history. And as is discovered later, the ward of the last piece of the First Song.
  • Guy on Guy Is Hot: During her threesome with Clive and Augustin, she tells them to make out with each other, before turning their attention back to her.
  • Heroic BSoD: Briefly, when she has to sit through the military questioning her about the attack on Charvel.
  • It's All About Me: At first she's quite selfish. Over time however she starts to genuinely care for and look out for the members of her team, who become her friends.
  • Last of His Kind: She and her mother are the last surviving members of the Bellweather family line.
  • One-Woman Army: Her prodigious ability to create multiple tornadoes is one of the reasons the Camarilla sees her as a priority threat to be taken down.
  • The Perfectionist: She obsesses over being the best at everything, breaking down when she struggles or feels incompetent and weak.
  • Really Gets Around: Abigail unabashedly loves sex and isn't afraid to show it, having a threesome with two guys that appears to be quite casual.
  • Replacement Goldfish: In season 2, the Matriarch tries to pair her up with Gregorio Shellbark as a replacement for Libba, Gregorio's now-dead girlfriend. Naturally, Abigail is less than thrilled at the prospect of marrying her longtime rival's boyfriend.
  • Rich Bitch: Abigail, who's from a very wealthy family, is initially very rude to Raelle and Tally, believing the pair are beneath her. She request reassignment from their unit, convinced they will hold her back. However, later they bond and Abigail eventually warms to them so much she considers both her sisters.
  • Rivals Team Up: She teams up with her long-time rival Libba during Citydrop.
  • Royal Brat: Played straight and then later subverted. The Bellweathers are essentially royalty in the witch world. Abigail thinks very highly of herself and her family, but becomes disillusioned when she realizes she is judged not by her own merits but on her family name alone.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Zigzagged. Abigail fruitlessly tries to heal a dying Raelle and refuses to break the link between them, sacrificing herself in the process. However, due to their connection at the moment of death, their emotional bond actually causes a huge explosion of power, effectively saving them both.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: After her cousin is murdered, and surviving an attempted murder herself, Abigail shows clear trauma, including flashbacks to the events along with guilt over her survival.
  • Survivor Guilt: She feels guilt regarding the death of Charvel.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: She has this following the murder of her cousin Charvel and being almost killed herself.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the second season Abigail, frustrated by not having control over her sentimental choices and the fact that she feels the weight of the magical feats of her ancestor Jem, who was masterfully able to create numerous tornadoes with which she wiped out her enemies, which weighs on their family since none of them have been able to replicate this vocalization, she begins to train in an extreme way in an attempt to replicate the same results as Jem. She ends up straining her voice so much that in the next episode she needs to recover. However when she is sent to capture the leader of the Spree, Nicte Batan, and falls under her illusion scenario, Abigail finally manages to master the magic.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Abigail is exceptionally rude and condescending to Raelle and Tally at first, even trying to convince Alder to switch her to a new unit, but slowly grows to care for, protect, and defend them.
  • Too Much Alike: With Raelle. Both of them are very stubborn and thus get into conflict often.
  • Weather Manipulation: As an heiress of the Bellweather line, she's particularly skilled in weather magic and able to summon strong tornados.
  • Work Hard, Play Hard: She's as devoted to training as she is to having a good time.

    Tally Craven

Tally Craven

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tally_craven.jpg
Portrayed by: Jessica Sutton
"It's my duty to fight for this country. I think of it more as a privilege. A privilege we witches share."

A kind, strong-willed, and curious witch who enlisted despite her mother's passionate disapproval.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Nicte Batan calls her "Red." Tally wishes that she wouldn't, but eventually comes to live with it.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Due to her delight at Raelle being a lesbian, and physical affection toward her along with Abigail that can come off as a bit more than friendly, Tally at times seems like she could be bi. Season 2 sees her become explicitly infatuated with Alder after becoming entangled with her through biddy-hood, although it's unclear if that's due to an innate romantic or sexual desire rather than a result of their psychic link. Thus far the only sex and relationships which she's had have been with men.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: She dreamed of one day becoming one of Alder's biddies. In the first season finale, she gets her wish, losing much of her youth and vitality and becoming too weak to save Raelle and Abigail. Even after Alder has her life restored to her, another side-effect rears its head - she starts seeing visions of Alder's memories, and becomes aware of some of the seedier chapters in Alder's backstory.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's normally the nicest character on the series, but she did once manage to tear a hole through a sheet of metal with a mere shout just because she happened to be unusually angry that day. Season 2 ramps this up significantly when she is the one who uncovers the truth about the Spree, outmaneuvers Alder politically, and defeats the Camarilla's jamming frequency.
  • Cuddlebug: She is never more than a few minutes away from hugging or cuddling someone.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: From Gerit, until she discovers he's already engaged. Even then, it only stops her for a time.
  • Disappeared Dad: Tally's father isn't seen nor mentioned, only her mother. Her upbringing means he likely wasn't around to begin with.
  • Fiery Redhead: Inverted. Tally is the quiet peacekeeper of the group.
  • For Your Own Good: She reports Scylla to Anacostia because she overheard Scylla's plans to bring Raelle to the Spree and feared that Raelle was going to be kidnapped. Naturally, Raelle is pissed when she finds out.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Tally is very kind, but she is able to stand up for herself to her unit mates and even General Alder.
  • Granola Girl: Tally grew up on a matrifocal compound - basically, a hippie-witch commune with no men. She is the most liberal member of the main trio.
  • The Heart/Team Mom: All she wants is for her unit to get along and treat each other as sisters.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power:
    • Tally's magic specializes in the branch of precognition, specifically giving her the ability to sense the presence of other people and to track them down, which makes her very conveniently useful within her unit.
    • In the second season, after being brought back to her youth and normalcy from her biddies state, Tally in addition to developing the ability to be able to relive Alder's memories in the first person, obtains a rare ability that allows her to be able to see as trails of colors any sound that comes from a vocalization. This ability comes in handy to her several times in the second season starting from passing successfully a drill and to discovering the infiltration of a Spree spy among Alder's biddies. Spree leader and founder herself, Nicte Batan, mentions how unfortunate it is to have to kill someone with such a unique ability as hers.
  • Ironic Name: Her last name is Craven, but she's probably the bravest character in the cast.
  • Last of His Kind: Tally is the last generation in the Craven witch bloodline, due to all other branches being killed. Because of this, her mother did not want her to enlist.
  • Martial Pacifist: Played with. Tally comes from a community of conscientious objectors. She believes it's her duty to be in the military, but often balks when it comes to dealing with conflict and combat.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Tally is the most gung-ho member of her unit, and genuinely believes that the military is a force for good. She believes deeply in the military and her duty to serve. She is even mocked by Raelle for reading the military's magazine.
  • Nice Girl: Tally is a sweet girl at heart. Even her motivation for joining the army is pure - she wants to do her duty for her country.
  • No Social Skills: When it comes to men and dating, Tally is clueless, due to growing up in a matrifocal commune.
  • Seers: She specializes in perception-based magic, like scrying.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl:
    • Around Gerit, as he's the first man she met Tally's attracted to (having grown up on a women-only commune). Thus, her feelings are very intense, though he's not much different than most guys.
    • In season 2, she becomes smitten with Alder as a side-effect of being biddied. Alder assures her that it will probably fade over time.
  • Unexpected Virgin: Abigail and Raelle are surprised to learn Tally's a virgin, having grown up on a matrifocal commune, presumably because she's their age. She's totally unabashed though.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: She genuinely believes the military exists to do good. Eventually subverted when she realizes Alder is willing to kill innocent muggles to achieve her goals.

The Military

    In General
  • Emotional Powers: A witch's power can sometimes be amplified by heightened emotions.
  • Everyone Has a Special Move: Most witches become especially adept in one specific field.
  • Healing Hands: All witches are able to heal wounds via spells but Fixers (such as Raelle) are exceptionally gifted.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Any witch trained at Fort Salem is highly competent in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Mage Born of Muggles: Somewhat subverted. Witches can reproduce with muggles, but it is frowned upon since too much breeding outside of witch bloodlines diminishes and/or eliminates a family's magical ability.
  • Magic Enhancement: All witches have the ability of flight through the use of Salva, a quasi-magical potion.
  • Military Mage: What the vast majority of witches became after General Alder signed the Salem Accord.
  • Tornado Move: Witches working in tandem can call up dangerous storms.
  • World of Action Girls: Most of the cast are female, and being soldiers or cadets they frequently engage in combat or at least training for it.

    Sarah Alder

General Sarah Alder

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sarah_alder.jpg
Portrayed by: Lyne Renee
"Honor me, make a place for me and my kind, and we will win your wars."

The highest-ranking officer in the Armed Forces and the only leader the witches have ever known.
  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: In the season 2 finale, her dying body is buried within the Mycelium after the Camarilla wiped out all her biddies. In season 3 she is able to rematerialize for short periods of time as an avatar of the Mycelium.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Alder has been in charge of the military for 300 years and has fought in every one of the United States' wars, even with the biddies. Even after being off the frontline for some time, she is still capable of asskicking during an ambush.
  • Big Eater: She herself no longer needs to eat, but her biddies require a lot of food. After coming back from the dead in Season 3 she is seen digging into a plate of nachos with enthusiasm.
  • Burn the Witch!: During the Salem Witch Trials, Alder and her sister were found guilty of witchcraft and sentenced to hang. Upon seeing her murdered sister, Alder displayed her true magical ability to her tormentors.
  • Came Back Strong: Played With. After the death of her biddies, she has turned into an avatar of the Mycelium, which makes her no longer rely on her biddies and comes with a nice set of extra powers, but she regularly has to merge back into the mycelial network to regain her strength.
  • Chest of Medals: Her uniform displays numerous medals, as she has fought in the military since the 1600's.
  • Cold Equation/Collateral Damage: Although she cares for the recruits, she will sacrifice civilians and young cadets to further her war against the Spree. When challenged, she defends her stance.
  • Compelling Voice: Alder controls the President's mind by magic, saying the words that she wants made in a national address, with the President then repeating them on live TV.
  • Fisher King: Fort Salem thrives organically when Alder is healthy, but begins to die if she is injured or otherwise weakened, such as if one of her biddies is dying.
  • Frontline General: Originally she was this, leading her troops personally into battles as shown by paintings in the series' opening montage.
  • General Failure/General Ripper:
    • Alder is willing to go to extremes when necessary, such as holding Scylla prisoner and brutally interrogating her or killing draft dodgers. She also faces criticism from Petra Bellweather and others, including Congress and the President of the United States, for her lack of success with fighting the Spree.
    • The ancient witch community the Tarim view her with disgust, with Khalida even punishing her for attempting to learn their spells for her own gain.
    • Abigail, Raelle, and Tally view her as this when she lies and blames the Spree for the death of civilians, when they were really killed by the military.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Despite the cadets being half-trained and there being civilians in the Spree's truck, Alder makes a point in stating that if the cadets hadn't been sent out, thousands of people would have died.
  • Knight Templar: After facing persecution as a witch and becoming a hero, she's begun seeing herself as the be all to end all, and that she knows what needs to be done in stopping the Spree. When the President learns of all the things Alder's done, all the lines Alder's crossed in her effort to end the Spree, she sees fit to force Alder to retire. At this provocation, Alder then "puppets" the President during her address, forcing her to give Alder access to any measure of force she sees fit, effectively making her the most powerful person in the nation.
  • The Leader: Literally. She has been the head of the military since the Salem Accord was signed in 1692.
  • Life Drinker: The centuries-old Alder keeps herself physically young through draining the youth from “biddies”; these witches consider their sacrifice to be a great honor.
  • Might Makes Right/Appeal to Force: Alder is the oldest and most powerful known witch alive, and therefore considers herself above all other nations' witch and muggle leaders. She is not afraid to threaten anyone who challenges her authority. Her attitude and actions indirectly led to the creation of the Spree.
  • Nerves of Steel: She manages to remain composed and lead the fight to escape the reemerged Camarilla, a witch hunting group that killed her entire family, tried to remove her vocal cords, and forced her to flee to America with her sister.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: Although Alder intended to save herself and her fellow witches from persecution through the Salem Accords, she ultimately condemned them all to a type of slavery.
  • Older Than They Look: She is over 300 years old, but looks around 40.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Alder is over three hundred years old, mentioning having made the Accord around 327 years earlier and served in the military ever since. She's played by a forty-year-old actress. Justified: She's later shown to be a Life Drinker feeding on witches' called "biddies" vitality which empowers her and stops Alder from aging physically.
  • Shock and Awe: She is able to conjure black lightning storms.
  • Squishy Wizard: She's the military's most powerful witch, but her force relies on keeping her biddies close to her at all times and taking out just one of these fragile crones renders her disabled immediately.
  • Stronger with Age:
    • Due to being the oldest known living witch, Alder is significantly stronger than anyone else. She also appears to have access to powers other witches do not (e.g., using her biddies as life force).
    • Subverted when it becomes clear she is heavily dependent on her biddies in combat. If a single one of them dies, she becomes severely weakened.
  • Thought-Controlled Power: Alder shows the ability to do this when transferring life force into her body.
  • Vampiric Draining: Adler remains young through draining youth from her biddies (who are volunteers).
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Despite all of her impressive powers, she's easily weakened by taking out even a single one of her biddies.
  • Weather Manipulation: Alder's family carried an ancient song that she unleashed after seeing her dead sister. The vocalizations created the weather magic that is largely used by the American witches in combat.

    Anacostia Quartermaine

Anacostia Quartermaine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anacostia_quartermaine.jpg
Portrayed by: Demetria McKinney
"You are a soldier protecting her country. That's all you need to know."

A tough but wryly humorous drill sergeant whose chief concern is keeping the young recruits alive through basic training.
  • Afro Asskicker: She's already quite a skilled fighter, and put her hair in a large afro while going to the Camarilla meeting along with Scylla. They then rescue a witch girl whom the Camarilla plan to ritually murder.
  • Because I Said So: Whenever one of her students challenges her authority.
  • The Captain: She is in charge of leading the new recruits.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Played with, as Anacostia is sometimes brash and tough, but is also compassionate and understanding.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She saves Petra and Sterling from a flying car and gets fatally crushed by it.
  • Mama Bear: To her cadets, particularly the Bellweather unit. Out-of-universe, she has been nicknamed "mamacostia."
  • Mind Probe: Performed by Anacostia on Scylla to gain information about the Spree.
  • Paper Tiger/Reasonable Authority Figure: Although incredibly tough on her students, she sincerely cares about them and wants them to flourish.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Anacostia Quartermaine, the girls' drill instructor. She can be tough but is not a Drill Sergeant Nasty. She provides guidance when the cadets need it, and listens to their concerns.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Disgusted with Alder's actions and unsure if Scylla is truly irredeemable, she decides to help Scylla escape and follows her to the Spree safe house, working under Petra's direction to determine if the Camarilla have truly returned. After Alder is informed and seeing how much of a Knight Templar she is, Anacostia has begun to see her as a Broken Pedestal as well.
  • Thought-Controlled Power: Anacostia has some degree of this ability, as she was able to telekinetically choke Scylla without vocalization.

    Petra Bellweather

General Petra Bellweather

Abigail's mother. A decorated member of the military, she is wealthy and extremely influential.
  • Action Mom: She is a decorated war general who has fought in many battles.
  • Four-Star Badass: Her military prowess is renowned.
  • General Failure/We Have Reserves: She was perceived as this by Willa Collar, Raelle's mother. Raelle, of course, shares those sentiments.
  • Hypocrite: In the first season, she considers Tally and Raelle to be expendable because they're the last members of their respective families, while ignoring that her own daughter Abigail is the last Bellweather heir, and therefore her line is dying out, too.
  • Mama Bear: Petra is relentless when it comes to taking down the Camarilla members who attacked Abigail.
  • My Beloved Smother: She constantly pressures Abigail to be exceptional with her training in order to uphold the family name.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Abigail, Tally, and Raelle confided in her about Alder's behavior in the hopes that Petra would help them get some measure of justice for the civilians killed because of Alder's orders. Instead Petra tried to use the information to get Alder deposed so that she could take over. This coup failed, Alder grabbed even more power, and punished the Bellweather Unit by sending them on a Suicide Mission, resulting in the apparent deaths of both Raelle and her own daughter.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: After the Bellweather Unit fails to qualify for War College, she tries to pull strings to send Abigail there alone.
  • Took a Level in Kindness:
    • She warms up considerably to Raelle after the latter manages to bring Abigail home from the suicide mission. Initially she had viewed Raelle and Tally, Abigail's squad mates, as just impediments keeping her from success.
    • Her relationship with Abigail also improves when she grows more understanding of her and less pushy about her success, becoming much warmer to her daughter over time.

    Izadora

Izadora

Portrayed by: Emilie Leclerc
A skilled witch who oversees the study of Necromancy at Fort Salem.
  • The Cassandra: She discovers evidence that the Bellweather massacre was done by the Camarilla, not the Spree, but Alder refuses to listen.
  • Interrogating the Dead: Izadora is capable of performing a spell to speak with the dead, as long as the circumstances are ideal (such as during Beltane).
  • Necromancer: Her specialty in magic is necromancy, here meaning to raise the dead for interrogation or using them as spies.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor:
    • In order to demonstrate the Linking ability required to heal others, Izadora slits a cadet's throat open in front of the whole class. As the student is bleeding to death, Izadora proceeds with the lecture, and only then finally heals them.
    • Abigail is especially horrified considering the method in which her cousin Charvel was killed.

    Libba Swythe

Elizabeth Kane "Libba" Swythe

Portrayed by: Sarah Yarkin
A High Atlantic cadet at Fort Salem whose family has a long-standing feud with the Bellweathers.
  • The Ace: She runs the tightest unit among the recruits.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Like Abigail, Libba sometimes uses uncommon, old-fashioned insults.
  • Miles Gloriosus: If Abigail is to be believed (which is admittedly a big if, considering her obvious bias), the Swythe family has exaggerated its military prowess for generations. Libba actually manages to back up her big talk with competent leadership, though.
  • The Napoleon: She is the shortest character in the main cast, and also the meanest and bossiest.
  • Rich Bitch: Libba comes from a prominent, wealthy witch line, and makes sure everyone knows.
  • Rivals Team Up: She teams up with her long time rival Abigail during Citydrop.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Just when she and Abigail are beginning to put their rivalry aside, she is killed in ensuing battle when Alder orders the cadets to fight the Spree.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Her family is supposedly old and powerful, but they don't seem to be represented in the upper command of the army like the Bellweathers are.
  • Smug Snake: She thinks her wealth and her family name make her inherently better than other cadets, but her demonstrated skills are about the same as Abigail's and her family's big shining moment was a battle that happened so long ago that it's almost certainly become heavily embellished. Subverted when it turns out that Libba actually is a much more competent leader than Abigail.

    M

M

Portrayed by: Ess Hödlmoser

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c5d3c929_d189_4d6e_8201_e74ce39e9ad1.jpeg
Appearance in Season 2

The student leader of the Sekhmet Coven.

  • The Ace: They are shown to be very good at solo work and show a penchant for quick thinking in the field. While their self-confidence is shaken after the disbandment of their coven at the end of season 2, they rebound quickly in season 3, becoming the right-hand bodyguard to President Wade, who openly praises them to the other witches.
  • All There in the Script: They were explicitly written and cast as a non-binary character, but there hadn't been an occasion to actually mention their gender identity on the show until mid-season 3.
  • Bald Head of Toughness: M has a shaved head when they first introduce themselves in Season Two. M is well known as a very skilled combatant (they yell, "I am going to enjoy this!" just before beating up the group of Camarilla agents who were going to kill Abigail), trains the cadets in Sekhmet Coven and makes a disparaging remark about other students' long hair.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In Episode 3.1, "Homo Cantus", M has grown out their hair from mere stubble to a high and tight buzzcut. Not only does this signify a passage in time, but it accompanies M's admission that with half of Sekhmet being dead and most of the remaining half on the lam, they don't know their place.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Even though they always maintain a military decorum and can act quite abrasive to their coven, they genuinely miss their unit after its disbandment. They're also on the verge of tears later when requesting a new assignment from Anacostia. When talking with Tally later of how difficult they found it having to choose between serving with the men or women in the Army, their softer, vulnerable side also shows. M displays warm gratitude when Tally expresses her instant sympathy for this.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Abigail is ambushed by the Camarilla. Just before they slice out her voice box, Tally and M stop them, and M proceeds to beat up Abigail's attackers.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Their full name is as yet unrevealed.
  • Somber Backstory Revelation: Upon conscription, the non-binary M was forced to choose between basic training with women or learning to make weapons with men. With Alder's encouragement, they pursued War College and became coven leader.
  • Stealth Expert: One of their specialties according to Anacostia. After the Sekhmet Coven has de facto disbanded, they start taking on solo missions to spy on the Camarilla.
  • Trans Tribulations: M relates to Tally that they had to choose between serving with the men or women in the Army, which caused great discomfort due to their being nonbinary. It's become better however as they now feel seen for who they are. Tally expresses her immediate sympathy for this, pleasing M.

    Penelope Silver

Penelope Silver

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/05c5e038_5124_40fa_9c79_408d6cfd3624.jpeg

Portrayed by: Mellany Barros

The daughter of Vice President Blanton Silver, and the first witch to appear from outside of one of the recognized family lines in centuries. While her emergence raises new hopes for the future of witchdom, the fact that she is the Vice President's daughter raises new questions about the government's policies towards witches.

  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: As an unintended side-effect of the Witchplague strain the Camarilla infected her with, her spirit has survived in the shape of an atmospheric mist. Izadora is capable to put her back in a corporeal form, but she's highly confused and aggressive.
  • Kill the Cutie: She's a sweet and cheerful young witch who gets involuntarily sacrificed as a Witchplague host by her Camarilla father.
  • Mage Born of Muggles: Neither of her parents are witches, making her powers' emergence a huge surprise, since this hasn't occurred in hundreds of years.
  • Making a Splash: Her magic is manifested in the control of water and other liquids.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Subverted; her powers first emerge while she is cheerfully singing in her church choir.

    Glory Moffett

Glory Moffett

Portrayed by: Annie Jacob
A cadet at Fort Salem who grew up in the same matrifocal commune as Tally.
  • Childhood Friends: She and Tally grew up in the same matrifocal commune in Norcal.
  • Cowardly Lion: Played With. She doesn't seem to like combat all that much, and vomits when she has to face an actual combat situation, but she is still a unit leader, so presumably she's a competent fighter.
  • Granola Girl: Much like Tally, she's more liberal-minded, but doesn't have Tally's inner reserve.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: Glory is typically shown only in the background and rarely has one-on-one scenes with Tally, despite them being old friends. Possibly justified in that she is the leader of another unit.
  • Hufflepuff House: She leads her own unit, but it isn't given much attention.

    Gerit Buttonwood

Gerit Buttonwood

Portrayed by: Kai Bradbury

A male High Atlantic cadet, and Tally's erstwhile love interest in season 1.

  • Arranged Marriage: In season 1, he is betrothed to another High Atlantic witch, Hilary Saint - but he neglects to mention this when he courts Tally at Beltane. She only finds out later, because he happens to be getting married at the same ceremony as Abigail's cousin.
  • Innocently Insensitive: His solution to the love triangle between him, Tally, and Hilary is to try and arrange things so that Hilary walks in on him and Tally, creating a pretense for a threesome. Tally is pissed when she finds out that Hilary knew about this plan and she didn't. She promptly leaves Gerit.
  • Only Sane Man: He grew up in the same circles as Abigail and Libba, and has watched their rivalry play out for years, and finds it exasperating.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He isn't seen or heard from again after Tally leaves him in the first season.

    Gregorio Shellbark

Gregorio Shellbark

Potrayed by: Praneet Akilla

A male High Atlantic cadet at Fort Salem. Formerly Libba Swythe's boyfriend, he becomes betrothed to Abigail Bellweather in season 2, much to her consternation.

  • Boring, but Practical: While Abigail derides him as "a safety school with a penis", he is still a fully-trained and graduated soldier, and plays a role in the final battle.
  • The Bus Came Back: He is gone for most of season 3, but returns in the penultimate episode for Raelle and Scylla and Abigail and Adil's double wedding.
  • Graceful Loser: When it becomes clear that he's lost to Adil, he becomes friends with him, even helping Adil get dressed in High Atlantic formalwear for his wedding.
  • It Has Been an Honor: In Season 3, he is imprisoned for insubordination to Oversight Officers and interrogated due to being an "associate" of the Bellweather unit. He tells the apologetic Tally that it is an honor to be interrogated for their sake.
  • Nice Guy: While Abigail has no romantic interest in him, he gets along well with everybody else, even Adil, despite them ostensibly being romantic rivals.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Introduced in season 2, he has similar name and background to Gerit Buttonwood, who does not appear. He also ends up being a love interest for Tally in season 3.

    Lupe Cortez

Guadalupe "Lupe" Cortez

Portrayed by: Lina Lecompte

A recent cadet who was drafted for the occupation of the Cession.

  • Break the Cutie: She starts off as a cheerful, optimistic cadet, and ends up bitter and cynical. This trope ends up becoming Kill the Cutie when she and her fellow soldiers are sent off in a Uriah Gambit against a militia that outnumbers them.
  • Killed Off for Real: She is murdered by her Civilian Oversight handlers after refusing an order.
  • Mauve Shirt: She has a full name (Guadalupe Cortez), a nickname (Lupe), and characterization (she likes the Mothertongue class, and tries to give the Bellweather unit a head start while still following her orders), so she's a bit more known before being killed off.
  • Twofer Token Minority: A supporting character, she's the first Latina in the series to judge by her name (her actress is a Colombian-Canadian).

    Sterling Woodlot

Sterling Woodlot

Portrayed by: Luc Roderique
He is assigned to guard detail to Vice President Blanton Silver. He ends up becoming a love interest for Anacostia
  • Bald Head of Toughness: He is trusted with the Vice President's security. He and Anacostia make short work of the mooks keeping them captive in the Camarilla facility.
  • Papa Wolf: He is not a father, but he is enraged that that Silver had his own daughter infected with Witchplague, which is designed to be lethal to witches. He throws in Silver's face how much Penelope wanted to please him.

The Spree

    In General
  • Ape Shall Never Kill Ape: It is established that they do not kill witches. That is later put into question after several instances of mass killings of witches. It is later revealed that the Camarilla was responsible for the attack where several Bellwethers were killed.
  • Fantastic Terrorists: They are opposed to the conscription of witches into the Army as stipulated by the Salem Accords. To them, it is another form of slavery.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: The magical variation. In one instance, around 2000 civilians in a shopping mall are induced to jump to their deaths.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The Spree kill children among the other muggles in their attacks.

    Scylla Ramshorn

Scylla Ramshorn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scylla_ramshorn.jpg
Portrayed by: Amalia Holm
"So many sick ways to kill us and maim us... does something like that ever really go away?"

A playful yet dark and mischievous recruit who is not what she appears to be.
  • Act of True Love/Heroic Sacrifice: Despite being ordered to bring Raelle to the Spree, Scylla decides at the last minute to protect Raelle, who she loves, by not handing her over to them. She does this all while knowing her decision will put her in the Spree's cross-hairs.
  • The Beastmaster: In season 2, she learns how to control crows to do her bidding.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The military executing Scylla's parents (in lieu of simply arresting them) drove Scylla to join the Spree.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents had both been draft dodgers who were later killed in a confrontation with the military. Up until that point, Scylla had lived a life on the run with her family. She's later recruited to be a member of the Spree.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Zigzagged. Scylla is a member of a terrorist group, kills hundreds of muggles and also her ex-boyfriend, Porter, and is willing to do anything to gain Raelle's trust, including sleeping with her. However, she actually genuinely falls for Raelle and is willing to sacrifice herself for her. She also feels remorse for her actions.
  • Easily Forgiven: This is zigzagged in the second season. Raelle gets over Scylla being a mass-murdering terrorist pretty fast, though it's more understandable as they were lovers before. Abigail though makes it clear she does not in any way forgive her, and Tally only tolerates her as Scylla helped to save Raelle's life. Both only work with her due to needing her help in taking down Nicte. In Season 3 however it appears Abigail's forgiven her , as she accepts Scylla as "one of us" after all they went through together. Tally also acts chummy with Scylla, showing that she's come around to feel the same.
  • Femme Fatale Spy: Gorgeous, charming, and an undercover member of the terrorist organization the Spree.
  • Happy Flashback: While dancing with Raelle at Charvel's wedding, Scylla remembers significant moments in their relationship; it's this that makes her realize she's fallen in love.
  • Honey Trap: For Raelle. She was sent to recruit her into the Spree, using seduction for the purpose. However, she falls for her genuinely.
  • In Love with the Mark: Scylla has fallen for Raelle genuinely, despite it being only meant as a honey trap to seduce her into The Spree. At the wedding after her superiors commanded that she bring Raelle to them, Scylla is shown having flashbacks over their moments together, and is clearly unable to. She tells Raelle she's in love with her, and always will be, then vanishes under cover of the chaos The Spree attack causes.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Scylla has very striking, expressive blue eyes, making her look more naive and innocent than she really is. This probably helped in her infiltration work.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Scylla has very pale, blue-gray eyes which are piercing and always noticeable.
  • Interrogated for Nothing:
    • Alder and Anacostia repeatedly torture Scylla for information about the Bellweather killings, including Charvel. As it turns out, Scylla knows nothing about it. It also turns out that the Spree had nothing to do with the killings; in truth the Bellweathers were slaughtered by the Camarilla.
    • Later inverted when they do manage to force information of the location to a Spree armory out of her.
  • It Meant Something to Me: Raelle believes Scylla lied about being in love, but Scylla's feelings are in fact genuine.
  • Love Confession: To Raelle, when she chooses to not hand her over to the Spree.
  • Love Redeems: While it's implied that she was always a little uncomfortable with the Spree's actions it's her love for Raelle and decision to choose her over her mission that starts her down the path of turning from the Spree.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Scylla shows increasing signs of guilt after being faced with a memorial to people she killed in a Spree massacre, along with their loved ones.
  • My Parents Are Dead: The reason Scylla joined the Spree (they were killed by the Army, and she wanted revenge).
  • Necromancer: Her Army specialty is supposedly necromancy, here meaning magic to raise the dead and interrogate or use them as spies. Not shown using it with the Spree or after leaving the Army, so it may have been misdirection to hide her actual abilities.
  • Reunion Kiss: She has one with Raelle in episode 1x07, then also 2x08 and 3x08.
  • Sixth Ranger: By season 3, she's basically the fourth member of the Bellweather Unit.
  • Spanner in the Works: Willa Collar's plan to reunite with her daughter was dependent on Scylla bringing Raelle to her. However, Scylla fell in love with Raelle, and, not knowing the whole truth, chose to betray the Spree for Raelle, believing she was protecting Raelle from danger.
  • Synchronization: Played with; Scylla has a magical link to Raelle that allows Scylla to transmit messages to her via their palms. They don't share sensations otherwise.
  • The Unapologetic:
    • When confronted by Alder, Scylla shows no remorse for being part of the Spree and having killed hundreds in a terrorist attack and refuses to betray the Spree by giving up any names or locations that could help prevent further attacks.
    • However, when Anacostia links their minds, she feels Scylla's guilt. Scylla herself breaks down after being forced to re-live the memory of the moments before the attack, though how much of this is guilt and how much was her anguish at seeing Raelle again is unclear.
  • Unconventional Wedding Dress: Wears a formal black skirt and white/cream lace top to her wedding, befitting her Necro style.
  • The Vamp: Scylla is a beautiful young woman from the Spree terrorists who infiltrates Fort Salem, seducing Raelle to get her on their side. However, it gets zigzagged as Scylla then falls for Raelle genuinely, then is unable to go through with bringing her into their grasp.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Scylla believes in the Spree's ideology that forced military conscription is slavery. She's also willing to go along with killing muggles as retribution for all the witch lives lost in battle over the centuries, or other witches as retribution for choosing to be part of the military that killed her parents.

    Willa Collar

Willa Collar

Portrayed by: Diana Pavlovská

Raelle's mother. A skilled Fixer for the military and the leader of Scylla's Spree cell.

  • Chekhov M.I.A.: In the pilot episode, Raelle is still grieving Willa's death from a year earlier. However, in the season 1 finale, it's revealed Willa is actually alive.
  • Healing Hands: Her specialty is healing magic, with laying on hands being part of it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She dies for real after using her magic to draw the Camarilla's bioweapon out of Raelle.
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: Her marriage to Raelle's father was outside of the approved family lines.
  • The Medic: Petra Bellweather states that Willa was a gifted medic everyone wanted with them on deployments.
  • Never Found the Body: Willa was allegedly killed during a firefight on a beach in Liberia. The sand turned to glass around her and only minimal remains were found.
  • Religion is Magic: Raelle was taught how to do "Christo-Pagan" healing by Willa.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Willa appears in only three (very small) scenes in the entirety of season 1, however one of these is the last scene in the finale, where it's revealed she's not only alive, but the one who's been giving Scylla orders the whole time.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her family's combat charm, given to her by her mother. She later passes this on to Raelle.

Nicte's default face
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nicte_2.jpg
Alternate face in Season 3
Click here to see Nicte's true face

Portrayed by: Arlen Arguayo-Stewart, Kandyse McClure (alternate identity, Season 3)
"Soon enough they'll be knocking on people's doors in the middle of the night, rounding up witches and anyone else who's different."

The founder of the Spree. Formerly a loyal ally of Sarah Alder, she grew tired of serving the US military and thus defected.

  • The Atoner: Shows signs of this in episode 3.9, when she tells President Wade that she recognizes her contribution to how bad things are, but to please use her knowledge and experience to fight the Camarilla.
  • The Beastmaster: Nicte uses crows and bats whose call has been enabled to cast spells against enemies.
  • Facial Horror: Nicte kept up a glamour of what she looked like at the time of the Liberia incident so Alder would recognize her during the assassination attempt and still does. In reality, her face is disfigured by burn scars and age.
  • Glamour Failure: She permanently keeps the Spree glamour up as her true face got disfigured decades ago. Tally gets a brief look at it when sparring with her.
  • The Unfettered: As founder of the Spree, she finds killing civilians quite acceptable to fulfill her goals. While on the run, Scylla has to dissuade her from killing nearby civilians to use their faces. Later, when they are trying to evade capture, she tries to get Scylla to stop trying to contact the missing Raelle (which could give them away) and eventually sabotages her.
  • We Used to Be Friends: She was close to Alder before her defection.

    Jonas Blackfoot

Jonas Blackfoot

Portrayed by: Albert Nicholas

A hotheaded male recruit. He's begun to question Willa's leadership after she agrees to let Scylla work with Anacostia.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The Spree's assassination attempt at Alder involves him getting molten gold poured down his throat.
  • Sour Supporter: While he supports the Spree cause, he questions Willa's judgment, especially after she allows Scylla work with Anacostia.
  • Mauve Shirt: He is given some characterization before Nicte sacrifices him as part of an attempt to kill Alder.

The Camarilla

    In General

An ancient order of fanatical Christian fundamentalists devoted to eradicating all witches and establishing a theocratic state.

  • Absolute Xenophobes: They want ALL witches dead. When ordering the invasion of the Cession by the US army, they anticipate a Mutual Kill between the Army soldiers and the Cession witches.
  • Big Bad: They turn out to be the main villains for the entire series.
  • False Flag Operation: The assassins at the Bellweather residence turn their mission into this by screaming that they are from the Spree while burning themselves to death. They succeed; for a while the massacre is attributed to the Spree.
  • Knight Templar: As Christian fundamentalists, performing witch genocide and dismantling the matriarchal society is their main mission. They're firmly convinced this is completely righteous and divinely ordained.
  • Martyrdom Culture: When the agents who killed Charvel and try to kill Abigail get caught by Petra, they realize that fighting against two Bellwether women will not end in their favor. To avoid getting caught and interrogated, they run off and burn themselves alive.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: One of their missions is to prevent an unspecified "union of Earth and Sky", which they believe to be represented by skilled earth and weather mages Adil and Abigail, who have gotten considerably closer in their fight against the Camarilla.
  • Would Harm a Child: They abduct a little girl and prepare to kill her via stoning.

    Alban Hearst

Alban Hearst

Portrayed by: Bob Frazer

The chief scientist of the Camarilla.

  • Bad People Abuse Animals: It's implied he used to "experiment" on dogs long before he even joined the Camarilla.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: In season 3, he has himself surgically outfitted with a set of a captive witch's vocal cords.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Izadora laces his coffee with Penelope's condensed mist form, making her witchplague eat him from within.
  • Demoted to Dragon: In season 3 he's revealed to be very much under the thumb of Kara Brandt
  • Evil Gloating: Shows up during the Camarilla attack on Fort Salem just to do this to Petra. Mentioning the prophecy of the Union of Earth and Sky in the process, which his enemies hadn't even known about.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He maintains a cheerful demeanor even while performing vivisections or discussing plans of genocide.
  • Large Ham: He's very theatrical, taunting his enemies and reciting Scripture.
  • Mad Doctor: He performs gruesome experiments on how to harness and kill witches.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He occasionally burst out into songs, dancing and rhymes. Being put under pressure by his sister brings out this side of him even more.
  • Sissy Villain: He has a lot of the hallmarks of a sissy villain, being overly theatrical, allowing a female relative to boss him around, and lacking a female love interest. There's also the fact that he had a female witch's vocal chords implanted in him and his asking the protagonists if he can be their "sister".

    Kara Brandt

Kara Brandt

Portrayed by: Emilie Ullerup

A bigwig in the Camarilla with strong connections to federal politics.

  • Big Brother Bully: A sisterly example. She resets her brother's broken nose as painfully as possible and is frequently putting him down in private and in front of others.
  • Blonde Republican Sex Kitten: She's a conventionally attractive blonde politician spearheading a bigoted anti-witch organization. She also pretends to be Silver's Dumb Blonde arm candy when it suits her.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name bears a strong resemblance to Karl Brandt, mastermind behind the Third Reich's euthanasia program, and is an influential figure within the genocidal Camarilla.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: At Petra's dinner party, she is VP Silver's plus-one, and acts like The Ditz. She lays the act so thick that Petra and Anacostia figure she does not know they are unto her.
  • Siblings in Crime: She's revealed to be Alban Hearst's sister, and represents the political arm of the Camarilla.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: She's notably absent from the final confrontation, making her whereabouts unclear. Presumably she's still alive, and will have been transformed into a witch along with everyone else on Earth.
     Colonel Jarrett

Colonel Jarrett

Portrayed by: Aaron Douglas
A member of Civilian Oversight, the group appointed by President Blanton Silver to oversee changes at Fort Salem. Jarrett is an Oversight Officer whom has been designated as General Bellwether's personal oversight.
  • The Bully: When Cadet Cortez innocently asks why the Mothertongue class has been canceled, Jarrett interrupts Professor Grafton's explanation in a brusque manner with his own rant about witches having their own secret language. His body language and dominating tone when he asks if she has further questions silence her.
  • The Brute: He has no qualms about using his stern voice and physique to intimidate the younger and smaller Cortez. However he is outsmarted by Grafton insulting him in Mothertongue and Petra using Farspeech to give her people the real orders for the invasion.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He does not take kindly to the revelation that his boss Silver had poisoned his own daughter.
  • Large and in Charge: He is burly and has no problem using his size for intimidation when talking down to a petite cadet.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He is constantly scowling, even when things are going according to plan.
  • Stupid Evil: For all his authority, he's a moron who is constantly outmaneuvered by whichever witch is stuck dealing with him. Grafton openly insults him in Mothertongue, but he doesn't realize it because he doesn't speak the language, and Petra is able to issue orders that contravene his, right in front of him, because he has no awareness that witches can use pitches that normal people can't hear.

Government Employees

    President Wade

Kelly Wade

Portrayed by: Sheryl Lee Ralph

The current President of the United States.

  • Faking the Dead: When she finds out about the Camarilla's assassination plot, she has the witches replace her with a golem to pose as her dead body.
  • Iron Lady: She is the 45th President. When VP Silver speaks of a bill with amendments that would prevent witches from voting she stands up and proclaims that she will not tolerate such a breach of civil rights for anyone. All he can do is pretend to agree while Kara Brandt pouts.
  • Worthy Opponent: Minerva Bellweather, Petra's mother and Abigail's grandmother, had held a grudge against Wade for decades. After they get their differences settled in Episode 3.02, she expresses her admiration for a fellow Black woman who rose through the ranks around the same time as her.

    Vice President Silver

Blanton Silver

Portrayed by: Victor Webster

The Vice President of the United States and father of Penelope. He is later sworn in as President of the United States in Wade's place after the Camarilla's assassination plot.

  • Beneath the Mask: He allows his daughter to be sacrificed with the expectation of being rewarded with being President. But on TV, he acts like a bereaved parent mourning his murdered child.
  • The Mole: He's secretly aligned with the Camarilla.
  • Offing the Offspring: He has Penelope infected with a powerful witchplague strain in an attempt to mass-purge Fort Salem.

The Tarim

    In General
Young refugees from the Tarim, an ancient Eurasian witch sect.
  • Actual Pacifist: The Tarim don't believe in using violence, no matter what. Adil eventually breaks this code, killing a couple Camarilla members to rescue captured witch girls, then Khalida does too to protect him from them.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Their powers are strongly connected to earth, minerals and magma.
  • Honor Before Reason: Subverted when Khalida refuses Alder's help—Alder and even Adil clearly see it as this, but Khalida considers the military, particularly a military headed by Alder, getting hold of her people's unique magic to be much, much worse than the destruction of the Tarim.
  • Invisibility: Their people have mastered the ability to make themselves invisible, even to other witches.
  • Power Makes Your Voice Deep: Their immensely powerful earth magic usually takes place in the deeper register.

    Adil
Portrayed by: Tony Giroux

Khalida's big brother.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Being part of an ancient pacifist tribe doesn't stop him from punching witch-phobes in the face or levelling an entire Camarilla facility to the ground with his powers.
  • Can't Tie His Tie: Has no idea how to put one on when he is getting dressed for his wedding to Abigail. He ends up wearing it like a scarf.
  • Red Herring: The Camarilla are trying to stop an event referred to as "the union of Earth and Sky" which they believe to be the unification of the Tarim and the Bellweather dynasty through Adil and Abigail. Alder eventually finds out the Bellweather line had their own supressed tradition of Earth magic all along.

    Khalida
Portrayed by: Kylee Brown

A young witch from an extinct witch tribe.

  • Actual Pacifist: The Tarim don't believe in using violence, no matter what. Adil eventually breaks this code, killing a couple Camarilla members to rescue captured witch girls, then Khalida does too to protect him from them.
  • Creepy Child: Khalida acts much older than she visually appears to be.
  • Honor Before Reason: Subverted when Khalida refuses Alder's help—Alder and even Adil clearly see it as this, but Khalida considers the military, particularly a military headed by Alder, getting hold of her people's unique magic to be much, much worse than the destruction of the Tarim.
  • Magma Man: She turns a Camarilla terrorist into a pile of lava chunks with one quick growl.
  • Older Than They Look: According to the show creators, Khalida is much older than her child-like appearance suggests.
  • Really 700 Years Old: According to the show creators, Khalida is hundreds of years old. It's unclear if this was changed in season 2, where she acts closer in age to Adil.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: A short, succinct one to Alder, declaring that Alder will never be worthy to learn the Tarim's songs.
  • Suicidal Pacifism: Khalida rebukes Adil for using spells to kill two Camarilla when rescuing captured witch girls, saying even if maintaining their pacifism meant all of the Tarim died, they still shouldn't use violence. It's subverted when she kills to protect Adil once the Camarilla attack though.

The Cession

    The Marshal
Portrayed by: Michael Horse

A powerful Native American warlock in charge of guarding the Cession.

  • Badass Native: He manages to catch the group via his tracking skills and his own ability to wield magic by whistling to render their magic Work ineffective.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He's only referred to as his title, or Head Marshal to distinguish him from the others.
  • Grin of Audacity: He frequently sports one when No Selling the witches' Work.
  • Magical Native American: He's Native American, with long gray hair, wearing tribal style ornamentation on his clothing with a cowboy hat and dark leather jacket fitting how many modern Native men dress. As a Scarily Competent Tracker, he manages to find Nicte and Scylla, undoing their disguises using a spell he activates by whistling. Of course, given this show has a nearly all witch cast it's not as unusual. He is the first Native American on the show however.
  • No-Sell: He's capable of seeing through the Spree's illusions and the witches' blasts hit him like a mere breeze.
  • Scarily Competent Tracker: He's a tracker who has been reputed to be the best there is. He manages to see through Scylla and Nicte's disguises, revealing them with a whistle. They manage to flee, but he still finds them, and expresses admiration that they even temporarily had escaped him.
  • Really 700 Years Old: When talking to Alder, it's revealed that he has known her for centuries. The Work that allowed Alder to live for centuries without aging thanks to her Biddies came from his tribe. He has a similar system with his Marshals. We find out via Exposition that he was hit by Rapid Aging while driving and lost control of the vehicle. M assumes (correctly) one of his deputy marshals must have died.
    Pauline

Pauline Marten

Portrayed by: Michelle Thrush
The Ojibwe representative on the Council of the Great River.
  • The Fashionista: She is one of the Council's more stylish members.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When Thelma Bearkiller reveals she founded a militia without the Council's knowledge, she allows Thelma to explain her reasons. She also wants to hear what the Bellweather unit has to say for themselves about the charges against them.
    Thelma

Thelma Bearkiller

Portrayed by: Olivia Lucas
The Iroquois representative on the Council of the Great River.
  • Properly Paranoid: "Book Club" reveals that she's been preparing her own militia for years without the knowledge of the other Council members, believing it was only a matter of time before the US's jealousy of the Cession's success led them to try to invade and reclaim it, which comes in very handy when Silver declares war.
  • Terms of Endangerment: She calls Milly "cousin", in a not-terribly-friendly tone.
    Milly

Mathilda "Milly" Longhorse

Portrayed by: Quelemia Sparrow
The Sioux representative on the Council of the Great River.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Of all the Council members, Milly is the most openly sympathetic to the Bellweather unit and clashes with the initially hostile Thelma over it, but is actually The Mole for the Camarilla.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: As one of the oldest members of the Council, she's seen as a bit daft and unserious about her duties, and consequently, the others have been ignoring her concerns about her territory for years.
