Japanese Kaiju

Showa Era debuts — The Seventies

In 1970, special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya died, and thus came the end of an era. Toho's Special Effects Techniques Department was shuttered and replaced with Toho Eizo (or Toho Vision) Inc., which not only worked on films but farmed their skills out to television and other non-film productions. The company would continue to serve in this capacity until the 1980s.

This page covers the giant monsters of the 1970s, including those from Space Amoeba, which had begun production just days before Tsuburaya died (and thus was the last film completed under the Special Effects Techniques Department), and all giant monsters created for the Godzilla series prior to The Return of Godzilla, which marked the official start of the Heisei soft reboot series.

    Gamoni

Gamoni

First appearance: A Space Godzilla, 1979

Leading the Sunerian army in an attack on the home planet of a race of alien Godzillas, killing the Godzilla alien Rozan when she returned with her son Lilin. But Ronan's husband, Kunin, rallied the other Godzillas and, with the aid of the Sphinxes, drove off the Sunerians and rescued his son by killing Gamoni and throwing her head in a sea of acid.

    Ganimes

Ganimes

First appearance: Space Amoeba, 1970

Film Appearances: Space Amoeba

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Ganimes_7389.jpg

After Gezora was defeated, the space amoeba Yog fled the lifeless body and entered a stone crab, mutating it into the gigantic Ganimes. It returned to the island to seek vengeance on the humans who attacked it, but was quickly destroyed by explosives. Yog then possessed a second stone crab, as well as a turtle and one of the humans, creating another Ganimes along with Kamoebas. The two monsters attacked the islanders, but the man broke Yog's control and released a swarm of bats, which interfered with Yog's control of the monsters and caused them to battle each other. Both Ganimes and Kamoebas fell into a volcano, destroying them and Yog once and for all.

  • Brainwashed: When possessed and grown by Yog. When freed by the sound of bats, the second one immediately battled with Kameba.
  • Giant Enemy Crab: Giant stone crab. Well, two of them.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": As mentioned below, his name comes from the Japanese word for "crab" (kani), with the suffix "-me" added.
  • Meaningful Name: Based on kani, Japanese for "crab".
  • Spiteful Spit: Spits blinding saltwater into the enemy's eyes.
  • Touched by Vorlons: The Yog entity possessed it and both stone crabs grew to Ganimes.
  • Weakened by the Light: His eyes are very sensitive to anything too bright.

    Gezora

Gezora

First appearance: Space Amoeba, 1970

Film Appearances: Space Amoeba | Godzilla: Final Warsnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Gezora-the-Tasty_1859.jpg

A cuttlefish possessed by the space amoeba Yog and grown to enormous size. Gezora then terrorized the small island Yog had crashed onto, killing several people before being driven off by the high-pitched cries of a swarm of bats and later a pod of dolphins. His final attack saw Gezora lured into a field and set alight by gasoline and torches, mortally injuring the beast and driving it into the sea, where Yog fled the dying body to find another host.

  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: Despite his rather lacking abilities, and his fairly swift defeat in the movie, Gezora was brought back for the NES videogame Godzilla: Monster of Monsters with no explanation. He's neither particularly powerful nor even appeared in any Godzilla films, so his appearance in the game is somewhat confusing, since even Mogera and has been in Godzilla films, though admittedly not during the Showa Era, which was what the game was based on. However, given that Gezora, like Ganimes and Kameba was brainwashed and slain and Yog itself is also dead, this may just be a case of Throw It In! on the part of Toho. Sadly for Gezora, he's less than useless in the game as an antagonist, with no real weapons at all and is one of the easiest monsters to beat within a few rounds at most. And even worse, all the monsters on the previous level are constantly brought back in the next level right up until the finale, so this poor guy gets Curb stomped repeatedly. Almost makes you feel sorry for him.
  • Harmless Freezing: He can emit a very cold atmosphere around himself, freezing the water around him and giving any human he touches frostbite.
  • Kill It with Fire: His greatest weakness. After he is severely wounded by fire and retreats into the sea, Yog abandons him.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": His name comes from the Japanese word for "tentacle" (geso), with the common kaiju name suffix "-ra" added at the end (so his name would be "Tentaclera" if directly translated). And lo and behold, he's a cephalopod monster.
  • Logical Weakness: As a cold-based organism Gezora is extremely vulnerable to, and ultimately killed by fire.
  • Meaningful Name: Based on geso, Japanese for "squid tentacle".
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: In the IDW comics, he becomes an adversary of Godzilla. Before this he already appeared in a few Godzilla video games.
  • Sea Monster: Unlike Ganimes and Kamebas, Gezora is a regular sea monster Yog possessed.
  • Tentacled Terror: He's a giant amphibious cuttlefish monster mutated and possessed by an alien.

    Gigan

Gigan

First appearance: Godzilla vs. Gigan, 1972

Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Gigan | Godzilla vs. Megalon | Godzilla: Final Wars

Played By: Kenpachiro Satsuma (1972-1973), Kazuhiro Yoshida (2004)

AKA: Borodan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gigan.png

One of the most unique and popular of Toho's monsters, Gigan is a Cyborg Serial Killer with a sadistic streak a mile wide. Flesh and mechanics combined into a cycloptic engine of destruction, Gigan lives to destroy and mutilate.

His first attack on Earth was alongside King Ghidorah as part of the Space Hunter Nebula M aliens' attempt to take over the planet, and he fought against Godzilla and Anguirus. Though the battle was long and brutal, Gigan and King Ghidorah were defeated and fled back into space. Gigan returned the next year to aid the giant beetle kaiju Megalon in his attack on Japan, and faced Godzilla and Jet Jaguar. Once again Gigan fled into space after being bested, abandoning Megalon to his fate. Gigan was then captured by the alien race known as the Garoga, modified and sent back to Earth, where he faced Godzilla and then Zone Fighter in combat and met his end on the wrong side of Zone Fighter's Meteor Missile Might.

Gigan returned in 2004's Final Wars as the vanguard of the Xillien invasion force. Having seeded earth with the M mutant gene 12,000 years in the past, Gigan was defeated and mummified by Mothra, then awakened by the Xillien leader to attack mankind. He was defeated by Godzilla in Antarctica, recovered and modified, and aided Monster X against Godzilla before being destroyed for good by Mothra.

  • Adaptational Heroism: In the novel GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla, the prequel to the anime trilogy, he's very uncharacteristically presented as a good monster who is sent out to defend humanity from Godzilla, who is highly antagonistic here, and Gigan even becomes highly respected for his ultimate sacrifice for the sake of mankind.
  • Alien Invasion: No one knows where Gigan's from, but it clearly isn't anywhere around here. He's been the vanguard of two separate alien invasions thus far (more if you include some of the video games).
    • Japanese sources state Gigan was a "space dinosaur" native to somewhere in Space Hunter Nebula M modified with cybernetic implants. Averted in GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla, where he's just a large amphibious dinosaur in a Siberian coast.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: One of the best examples, with his sadism, cowardice, and total lack of redeeming feature being his most prominent qualities.
  • Ambiguously Related: In the video game Godzilla: Trading Battle, there is an original kaiju known as "Seagan" which strongly resembles Gigan, including have spiked hands and feet, mandibles and a horn on its head, wings and a rows of spikes on its back, and nearly identical coloration (to the Showa version, as the Millennium version didn't exist yet). Disregarding their similar appearances and Seagan's name almost certainly being a portmanteau of 'Sea Gigan', the game never implies a connection between the two.
    • The Showa version of Gigan bears a mild resemblance to Ghidorah with his golden scales and similar fin-like 'wings'—not to mention appearing alongside Ghidorah in his debut film—though nothing is ever really made of this.
  • An Arm and a Leg: In one IDW issue, he engages in a galactic battle with SpaceGodzilla. While he doesn't get killed by the crystal beast, Gigan does get his right arm yanked off by the latter as Space G was too powerful for him.
  • Appropriated Appellation: Botched pronunciation variant — in the novel Godzilla At World's End, when one of the people monitoring the hole in the surface of Antarctica sees him coming out and says "It's gigan-", they're cut off before they can finish saying "gigantic". He's later dubbed Gigan as a result of this.
  • Arch-Enemy: Is this to Mothra in Final Wars having battled and lost to Mothra in the past, refacing her in the future. Anguirius has also become a frequent opponent of his in American books and comics.
  • Art Evolution: His revamped Millennium appearance is a sheer contrast/overhaul compared to his original design. He went from a goofy-looking chicken-like alien to a futuristic, menacing, spikier, and edgier looking cyborg. The shape of his body is changed from a bulbous, almost fat torso sitting on top of stubby legs to a sleeker, more humanoid and more agile-looking form. The color of his body in his 2004 look is dark blue with his wings being red rather than yellow. His simplistic hooks that the Showa version had, are longer and are scythe-like in Final Wars. While his face is mostly kept the same, the teeth inside of his beak are much more pronounced and highly visible while being equipped with a long tail with a spike at the tip.
  • Ass-Kicking Pose: Does this when preparing to duke it out with Godzilla and Anguirus for the first time.
  • Ax-Crazy: Only a maniac would wear a buzzsaw in his stomach. Or attach chainsaws to their hands. On a more serious note, judging from his love of slowly carving his opponents to pieces, calling him insane — even by Kaiju standards — is not much of a stretch.
  • Bash Brothers: With Megalon and King Ghidorah, whom he fights alongside in Godzilla Vs. Megalon and Godzilla Vs. Gigan, respectively.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: His Hook Hands and double-bladed chainsaws.
  • Brains and Brawn: He's this to Megalon's brute force. It shows in the differing fighting styles between the two. When both got curb-stomped by Godzilla, Gigan pretended to be unconscious and waited for Godzilla to come close to make sure, then sprung back up to strike. Since Megalon relies on trying to overwhelm his foes with might without thinking twice, Gigan appears to be much more crafty than he lets on as he's even tried to keep Jet Jaguar hostage by having both of his hooked arms groped around his neck. Before that, he made a gesture that he'll tear into the robot's throat if Godzilla approaches closer... he gets a taste of Atomic Breath instead.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: His Showa version possesses a really small spiked tip on his tail even though he's never taken the time to actually use it for striking other kaiju in combat. However in Final Wars his redesign is equipped with a scorpion-like multi-pronged pincer for a tail where he stabs Mothra with it when he approached her.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: It's practically a given due to how incredibly bizarre his overall design is.
    • The Showa version in particular is this as he performed some celebratory goofy dances as a sign of victory, not to mention pulling off comical gestures... but let's not forget that he managed to batter Godzilla into a literal bloody mess and pretty much made Anguirus his personal punching bag.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: In his debut appearance, where both him and King Ghidorah are largely centered as the villainous alien duo in a tag-team battle squaring off against the heroic earthly team of Godzilla and Anguirus. He also shares this dynamic again with his arthropod ally Megalon.
  • Breakout Villain: Despite debuting in what is widely considered one of the weakest films in the franchise, Gigan has proven to be one of the most beloved and enduring Kaiju outside of the "Big Five" of Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mechagodzilla, thanks to his striking visual design and sadistic personality. He ended up one of the main villains of Final Wars despite not appearing in a movie since Godzilla Vs. Megalon, and has shown up in most non-film adaptations, continuing to act as a Psycho for Hire.
  • Butt-Monkey: The Final Wars incarnation ends up being this for the main quartet of kaiju (Godzilla, Mothra, Monster X/Keizer Ghidorah and himself); he gets decapitated by Godzilla himself, then blown up by Mothra.
  • The Cameo: Appears very briefly in Godzilla Legends issue 1.
  • Chainsaw Good: When upgraded in Final Wars, his hook hands are replaced with double-bladed chainsaws, which deliver pain to both Godzilla, and by accident, Monster X (impressive considering Monster X is the only monster to survive Godzilla's thermonuclear breath in the film). He also has a buzzsaw in his stomach.
  • Combat Pragmatist: If there's one thing Gigan hates, it's playing fair.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Basically anytime he battles Anguirus, it usually involves him single-handedly overpowering the mutated ankylosaur with nothing but absolute brutality. Anguirus even attempted to desperately ram into him, even though his revving buzzsaw was blocking his progression to rescue Godzilla from getting killed by the Godzilla Tower. It did not go well for him even he tried.
    • He brings the King of the Monsters down with one flying buzzsaw slash to the shoulder, where his own blood gushes out of the painfully inflicted wound. He even takes advantage of his flight mobility to repeatedly floor Godzilla to the ground by aerial ramming the back of his head whenever he tried his best to regain his posture. He later had Godzilla on a platter since he had the inability to fight back in a weakened condition as he literally kicks him as he was already down, and proceeded to strike his skull numerous times until blood started running down his beaten face.
  • Cyber Cyclops: Yup.
  • Cyborg: There is a living being inside all of that machinery.
  • Dark Is Evil: Colored a dark metallic blue in Final Wars with an even more sinister and wicked design to boot.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: He's killed by the hands of Zone Fighter by getting absolutely pelted by his powerful Meteor Missile Might. Gigan collapses to the ground, his visor dims as foams exits his beak, and finally combusts, putting a gruesome end to the Showa iteration of Gigan.
    • He suffers this fate, twice, in Godzilla: Final Wars when he reels Godzilla in with his snaring grappling anchors, only to have his entire head blown apart after it was engulfed by his Atomic Breath. When he "blows up" Mothra with his Scattered Light Beam Gigarium Cluster, the bladed discs that he previously ejected out of his shoulders sliced off his head. Mothra bursts out the explosion he created earlier, with a flaming body, and she dives right into his headless body and gets obliterated to kingdom come.
  • Determinator: Oddly enough in the anime continuity's novelizations, and among the many ways the monster depicted there is different from other versions of the character. Gigan is thrown into battle alongside human forces on multiple occasions, and despite being outmatched every time, he. Does. Not. Retreat. Progressive battles leave Gigan becoming more and more a cyborg, even gaining extra weaponry originally designed for Mechagodzilla. It takes Godzilla nearly completely obliterating him to finally put an end to Gigan, and even then, human forces rally long enough to recover his remains, taking truly massive casualties in the process.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Gigan is notably the first villain to make Godzilla bleed.
  • Dirty Coward: By his second appearance, he'd walked out on his allies twice mid-battle. It is also worth noting that he prefers to attack opponents who are unable to fight back.
  • The Dragon: To King/Kaiser Ghidorah in Godzilla vs. Gigan, Final Wars and Half-Century War. Rulers of Earth has him as the invading alien Cryog main monster.
  • Dub Name Change: Strangely, he goes by the name Borodan in the comic book version of Godzilla vs. Megalon, despite the fact that he was never referred to as such for the English Dub of Godzilla vs. Gigan.
  • Epic Fail: The Millennium incarnation of Gigan is pretty bad with this; engaging a newly-released Godzilla (and not even trying to dodge the atomic breath that made his head detonate), and then later, as Upgraded Gigan, he fires off his razor disks, turns around to resume the double-team on Godzilla... and is decapitated by the razor disks Mothra reflected at him. He's then blown up by a burning Mothra, though she survives (somehow).
  • Epic Flail: In Final Wars he was given four chain-shots to pulls his enemies closer to his buzzsaw.
  • Evil Laugh: He can be heard emitting a mechanical chirp that mimics the sound of a petty snicker with a mocking inflection. He even sneers along with Megalon as the 2 are watching to see Godzilla and Jet Jaguar being imprisoned in Megalon's surrounding ring of fire. He laters regrets it when they escape though.
  • Evil Versus Evil: In Rulers of Earth, Gigan spends an issue fighting SpaceGodzilla. It ended in a draw with both monsters seriously injured.
  • Eye Beam: For a long time, movie posters and video games had a tendency to give him this despite him not having one in his first two appearances, which most games based him on. Many people believed it was due to budget reasons as to why it was never shown. It was later revealed however by Teruyoshi Nakano that the REAL reason it was never shown was because he didn't believe it fit with the character, so neither film demonstrated this ability for said reason. Ultimately, the ability was added and retooled in Final Wars, where it's given a unique twist: he fires a beam that fires a short distance before exploding into a shotgun-blast of projectiles.
    • He does it again in the IDW Godzilla comics, first with his Showa design and then his Millennium one.
  • Eye Lights Out: The glowing red light in his visor fades in seconds before his death in Zone Fighter.
  • Eye Scream: In the ongoing Godzilla comic, Rodan shatters his visor by slamming into him.
  • Fatal Flaw: His cowardice. He works great with his allies and is an excellent fighter due to his sadism and love of cheating. The minute he takes even two hits from his foes, however, he runs like the wind, usually abandoning his allies in the process.
  • Faux Affably Evil: For all his sadism, Gigan is remarkably chummy towards whoever he partners up with, doing things like giving Megalon a brofist or patting King Ghidorah on the back. Won't stop him from abandoning them when the going gets tough.
  • Glass Cannon: Downplayed, really. When it comes to battles he can certainly endure physical strikes rather well, and his hooked claws and buzzsaw can make things literally bloody. It's Godzilla's Atomic Breath that puts him out of commission. He's mostly this in Godzilla: Final Wars, where he's a mechanical tissue paper packed with all sorts of deadly weaponry... that can accidentally slice off his own head if their return goes unnoticed.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In Godzilla Island, after being defeated by Godzilla, Gigan turns good guy and assists Godzilla against Destoroyah and Megalon and later against Dororin.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Occurs in the series Godzilla Island where he sacrifices himself to kill another evil monster. This is entirely at odds with his portrayal elsewhere.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Is decapitated by his own razor disks in Final Wars, then is detonated by Mothra.
    • In one scene in Godzilla vs. Gigan, Gigan notices a boulder laying right next to his foot, and for whatever reason he attempts to kick it at Anguirus... who just so happens to parry it like a volleyball, followed by Godzilla as he punches the aforementioned boulder right into Gigan's face. Strategy seems pretty foreign to space kaiju.
  • Hook Hand: What he normally has in lieu of actual hands. Gigan in Final Wars has scythe-like blades, and replaces them with dual chainsaws.
  • Informed Ability: The Godzilla Movie Studio Tour states that Gigan has a built-in flamethrower within his beak which can be used as a Breath Weapon whenever he's not in range. He's had this power the whole time in the Showa era but has never used it in any of his film appearances other than a couple of video games.
    • After he was defeated by Godzilla (again) in Zone Fighter, he brought himself back to life by using some of sort of "Ninja Revival Technique". An official book has claimed that Gigan is basically immortal and he was essentially just playing dead when Godzilla was inspecting his unconscious body lying about. Another book has also inclined that he's immortal, just as long as his hooked blades are free from physical damage. While none of those statements seemed to be confirmed, it's worth noting that the latter source may be openly feasible to a degree, since Gigan accidentally scorched his own claw after striking the back of Zone Fighter's head with the explosive section placed right on it. His other claw even gets blasted by Zone Fighter's Meteor Proton Beam, which might've severed his immortality, and this is what could've lead to his eventual destruction when he succumbs to the aftermath of the Meteor Missiles shot into him.
  • Ironic Name: The "Gi" in his name was derived from "nice guy", which is the last way to accurately describe Gigan.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: He repeatedly rams into the back of Godzilla whenever he tries to get on his feet after drawing blood from him. He literally does the deed to an already weakened Godzilla (who was blasted by lasers from the Godzilla Towers multiple times mind you) the way how he bludgeons his cranium in a brutal fashion until blood oozes down his face just screams cruelty.
  • Killed Off for Real:
    • His Showa incarnation was killed off in an episode of Zone Fighter when the titular hero blew him up with his Monster Missiles.
    • The novel version from Godzilla At World's End is fatally wounded by Anguirus and dragged into the Caspian Sea to drown.
    • The Millennium version is blown up by Mothra's flaming tackle.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Gigan tends to bail whenever the going gets rough. Whether this makes him a Dirty Coward or not is sort of up to you.
  • Laughably Evil: Some of his noticeable actions while in the middle of a battle will often involve him doing a short dance, sporting a overly dramatic fighting stance before a fight begins, and even joyfully hops in place like a skittish child after seeing King Ghidorah battering Godzilla's body into the already ruptured Godzilla Tower, although his brutality speaks volume for being a dynamically threatening and sadistic bloodthirsty beast... while looking like a giant cybernetic space chicken with bladed limbs and a built-in buzzsaw.
  • Lean and Mean: His redesign in Final Wars is visibly sleeker and skinnier than usual, with his body having more of a humanoid-like build, but he's just as destructive and sadistic as before just like his Showa version.
  • The McCoy: The 1992 art book Special Graphix Godzilla vs. Mothra compares and contrasts him with Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla, claiming that Gigan is a "bloodthirsty, ferocious cutthroat" to Ghidorah's "dignified villain" and Mechagodzilla's "consistently cold-hearted and composed professional."
  • Mecha Expansion Pack: The addition of his double-bladed chainsaws in Final Wars; it's implied they upgraded the rest of his systems as well.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Has a face vaguely resembling a bird's with insect-like mandibles, but he also has scaly skin, a tail like a lizard or a dinosaur, and fishlike fins on his back.
  • Mutual Kill: With Mothra in Final Wars. Although it could be subverted if the Mothra that shows up at the end turns out to be the same one and survived the explosion.
  • No Body Left Behind: Highly downplayed. He dies a second time in Final Wars when Mothra destroys the entirety of his newly constructed body from the Xiliens. The only 3 physical things that are left of him is his decapitated head and his pronged chainsaws.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Of Jet Jaguar in Godzilla vs. Megalon. It's a rather jarring scene in an otherwise silly film.
  • Off with His Head!: In Final Wars, where this seems to be the only way to disable him.
  • Pet the Dog: Subverted. He seems to have a Villainous Friendship with Megalon in Godzilla vs. Megalon, but the minute Godzilla and Jet Jaguar gain the upper hand, he splits, leaving Megalon to his fate to save his own skin.
  • Psycho Electro: In Final Wars he adds a set of cables capable of delivering electric shocks to his arsenal.
  • Psycho for Hire: Despite (seemingly) being under-mind control he seems to enjoy all the stuff he does, and the sheer number of alien species he's fought for can cause one to wonder if he is, in fact, for hire.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What exactly Gigan looked like prior to becoming a cyborg has never been revealed.
  • Sadist: His Showa, Millennium, and IDW comic book incarnations all demonstrate this personality trait, causing as much pain as possible for the heck of it.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In Godzilla vs. Megalon Gigan flies off after taking a couple of shots of Godzilla's atomic breath.
  • Shadow Archetype: Gigan can be seen as a sick joke of Godzilla's existence. Both are monsters that are an unholy combination of technology and nature coming into contact. The only difference is Gigan fully embraces the weapon he was made into.
  • Sinister Scythe: His Hook Hands in Final Wars resemble scythe blades.
  • Slaying Mantis: Has some elements of this in his design, with his massive Hook Hands, insect-like mandibles on his beak and his green coloration. Whether or not this was intentional is unclear.
  • Smug Snake: One gets this vibe from him. He taunts and bullies his enemies and prefers to inflict long, drawn-out torture on them rather than kill them outright, but never sticks around once it looks like the tables have turned. It helps that Gigan's mouth appears to be locked in a permanent smirk that denotes complete arrogance.
  • Stripped to the Bone: On Zone Fighter.
  • Spike Balls of Doom: An unused violent weapon that Gigan would've used for The Return of King Ghidorah, (which was one of the earlier planned drafts for Godzilla vs. Gigan) was being able to launch a mace-like projectile at his foes from his right arm.
  • Spikes of Villainy: While his Showa version is already pretty sharp, the Millennium version is something else.
  • Super-Speed: His anti-gravity flight speed within the Earth's atmosphere is basically around Mach 3, (which is also comparable to King Ghidorah's). Outside of the Earth's atmosphere, he's also capable of traversing through the outer reaches of space at around Mach 400.
  • Those Two Guys: Godzilla vs. Megalon gives it a Narm quality to it as seen here.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Within Final Wars, when his trademark Hook Hands are replaced with chainsaws, and his system is upgraded.
  • Toothy Bird: Just like Rodan, he has small rows of sharpened teeth in both his upper and lower jaw within that metallic beak of his. His rows of teeth are a lot more visibly defined for his Final Wars incarnation.
  • Villainous Friendship: With Megalon. Subverted in that he's perfectly fine with abandoning Megalon as soon as the tides turn in their enemies' favors.
  • Visual Pun: One of the Japanese words used for Gigan's name is gan, which is Japanese for goose. Gigan (besides Rodan) has a beak which makes him bird-like in terms of overall looks.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: The Xillians resurrect him twice in Final Wars; the second time they add chainsaws to his already impressive arsenal. Rulers of Earth will have him upgraded from his Showa design to his Millennium design.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: For his first match against Godzilla in Final Wars, he snared one of his his grappling hooks around his jugular to drag Godzilla towards his revving buzzsaw as a means to ensure that any trick that the Big G could do would be fruitless... He didn't account for having his head blown off by a blast of Atomic Breath though.

    Hedorah

Hedorah

First appearance: Godzilla vs. Hedorah, 1971

Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Hedorah | Godzilla: Final Wars | Godzilla vs. Hedorah (2021)note

AKA: The Smog Monster

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Hedorah_2359.jpg

An alien creature that came to Earth to feed on mankind's pollution. Starting as tiny tadpole-like things living in the ocean, the "baby" Hedorah began to seek each other out and combine into an ever-larger form, becoming a giant quadruped mound of shambling muck and filth. In this form Hedorah left the water to feed on pollution straight from the source and soon encountered Godzilla. The two had a short and inconclusive confrontation, which would become a common occurrence as Hedorah continued to grow larger and stronger. The filthy beast then assumed a new form, a UFO/slug-like flying form that left acid mists in her wake, killing thousands and destroying anything it touched. She then faced Godzilla on Mount Fuji in a towering bipedal form, using her own sludge and eye-lasers as weapons. Only through a combination of Godzilla's power and mankind's ingenuity was the pollution-born monster stopped, her body dehydrated to powder. A variation on Hedorah, a mushroom creature called Neo Hedorah, would also appear on Godzilla Island.

Hedorah returned in 2004's Final Wars as a pawn of the Xillians, appearing in Tokyo Bay alongside Ebirah in a last-ditch attempt to take down Godzilla before he reached their mothership. The duo failed miserably.

  • Adaptational Badass: Toho released a short film featuring the Final Wars Godzilla and Hedorah fighting properly, and unlike the movie Hedorah manages to put up an actual fight and even get the upper hand at points.
  • Adaptational Wimp: The Showa Hedorah was arguably one of the toughest foes Godzilla fought, taking out his hand and one of his eyes, and required the combined efforts of Godzilla and the JSDF to finally take down, while the anime Hedorah managed to kill both Rodan and Anguirus together before completely razing Beijing and Tianjin and disappearing. Meanwhile the Final Wars incarnation didn't even last thirty seconds in a two on one with Ebirah against Godzilla (although to be fair, Godzilla's Final Wars incarnation is arguably one of his strongest in any film).
  • Alien Invasion: It's an extraterrestrial that invaded Earth to feed on pollution.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: Gassed hundreds of people, tried to drown Godzilla in sludge, and is generally one of the most sickening beings in the franchise. Further evidence that in this universe, aliens are scum.
  • All There in the Manual: According to the mobile game Godzilla Defence Force, the Showa Hedorah was female and the Millennium Hedorah was male (distinguished by the red tendrils on its left hand).
  • Animal Motif: It's mentioned in the film that its metamorphic process is similar to that of a frog with the smallest and initial larger forms resembling tadpoles and the penultimate form being crouched down like a frog prior to its most powerful and humanoid form. Additionally, its eyes vaguely resemble toad eyes.
  • Asteroids Monster: Played straight and reversed, actually. It starts out as trillions of pollution eating organisms that are very tiny that pull themselves together as they go through their life cycle—getting bigger. Rip the bugger apart, though, without dehydrating/burning it well enough, those remaining pieces will get up and try to get back to the main organism ASAP.
    • Briefly, two Hedorahs exist simultaneously. The younger one split off from the elder when the latter fought Godzilla, then they recombined to form the gigantic form in the picture above. They split again when the elder is killed by Godzilla. This is only barely mentioned even in the Japanese version and not really explained at all in dubs.
    • Played with as it can still split into two halves that resemble its previous forms to avoid danger.
  • Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism: Well, not that bizarre. According to several sources, Showa Hedorah is female while the Final Wars incarnation is male, with its red markings being a form of sexual dimorphism.
  • Bloody Murder: Hedorah's bodily fluids are just as corrosive as everything else it emits.
  • Blob Monster: He's literally sludge so most attacks go right through him, although this attribute is inconsistent.
  • Body Horror: Yoshimitsu Banno, the producer of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, even acknowledged that Hedorah's eyes were meant to resemble vaginas. There's a red beam fired from the area where the clitoris would be. And then there's the scene where Godzilla punches his hand straight into one of these vageyenas and causes a dark, sludgy liquid to come out.
  • Butt-Monkey: In Final Wars, he didn't even get introduced before getting impaled by Ebirah and killed by Godzilla!
  • Darker and Edgier: Hedorah's appearance marked a moment in the franchise where Godzilla would routinely face off against seemingly insurmountable and oftentimes terrifying foes who threatened the very planet itself. Before Hedorah, the only monster that ever fit that criteria was King Ghidorah.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: At one point Hedorah is hanging out by a factory, leaning over the smokestacks and sucking up the smoke and pollutants. And she closes her eyes in bliss while nodding a little. Duuuuuuuude...
  • Ecocidal Antagonist: This kaiju is an alien organism that came to Earth to feed off mankind's excessive pollution. As it grows in size, the monster develops numerous superpowers, such as an extremely acidic body (strong enough to melt humans and even Godzilla to the bone), flight, eye lasers, and the power to exhale fumes deadly enough to kill thousands of people, all while leaving toxic spills and deadly gas wherever it goes. It ends up causing so much destruction, death, and ecological devastation that Godzilla and the military have to work directly together in order to kill the smog monster, portraying Hedorah as that much of a threatening, monstrous, and despicable creature that needs to be destroyed, even in comparison to other kaiju in the franchise.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Hedorah is easily the most Lovecraftian monster in Godzilla's rogues gallery, being a shapeshifting alien entity merged with toxic sludge.
  • Evil Laugh: The roar of Hedorah's Perfect Form sounds somewhat like an evil cackle, and it roars/laughs while covering Godzilla in sludge.
  • Eye Scream: Hedorah gets on both the giving and receiving ends:
    • On the giving end, Hedorah shoots a blob of sludge at Godzilla's face during their final clash in Godzilla Vs. Hedorah, which ends up melting one of his eyes.
    • On the receiving end, after getting sent flying into a building, his partner, Ebirah, soon follows, and flies into Hedorah's face claw first, taking out his left eye.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: People being reduced to bones from Hedorah's sulfuric acid mist.
  • Family-Unfriendly Violence: Godzilla's injuries at the hands of Hedorah.
  • Flying Saucer: Gets around its slow speed by being able to transform into this, with lights and sparkles!
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Hedorah has glowing red and orange eyes, and is a monster made of toxic sludge.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Despite the movie attempting to draw in children Hedorah creates a huge dissonance as it is a very powerful and particularly gruesome monster, even by the series standards, and it nearly succeeds in killing Godzilla!
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The projectile sludge of its own body that did little to no effect on Godzilla's body earlier was now able to burn away his eyeball, making him mostly blind with only one eye (not that it hindered him though). Right when Godzilla used his tail to move a boulder behind him, the sound actually distracted it, by then, Godzilla forcefully punches out one of its own eyes as a result. An eye for an eye it seems.
  • Logical Weakness: As a Blob Monster made out of sludge, it will die when completely dried out, which is how it is eventually killed in the film. And in Godzilla At World's End, where it died after the rain stopped, allowing Godzilla to dry out its body with his radioactive ray and finally incinerate it. This also comes up in the Godzilla vs Hedorah short film Toho released, where Godzilla wins by knocking Hedorah into power lines, weakening it enough for Godzilla to kill it with his Atomic Breath.
  • Meaningful Name: Ken calls the monster Hedorah because it lives in industrial sludge (hedoro) and polluted waters.
  • Metamorphosis Monster: Goes through several stages as it rampages through Japan, including a flying form and a crawling form before settling on a bipedal form. It's even mentioned that this process is similar to that of frogs.
  • Mighty Glacier: Its adult form is slow, but has some pretty dangerous attacks.
  • My Brain Is Big: It appears that at certain times its brain will rise out of its head.
  • Muck Monster: Hedorah is not an animal in the same way that the other Kaiju are. She's actually a living mineral.
  • Pet the Dog: In a rather unusual scene in Godzilla vs Hedorah, right after killing several people playing cards in a nightclub and oozing to the dance scene downstairs, thoroughly terrifying the partiers, it retreated, leaving a small cat covered in sludge but otherwise unharmed.
  • Planet Destroyer: The comet it rode on to get to Earth is implied to have been the remains of the previous planet he visited, which he wiped completely clean of life.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: in his brief appearance in Godzilla: Final Wars, he does this a lot.
  • Shaky P.O.V. Cam: When Godzilla confronts it a second time, during the day, and he wrestles it to the ground, there is a brief shot from Hedorah's POV when the Big G pulls back to punch it.
  • Silicon-Based Life: Unlike most Kaiju that are either earth-bound or alien yet have similar enough physiology, Hedorah is explicitly stated in-universe to be a mineral lifeform, with a base composite of crystallized carbon that bonds with waste particles. This is why it needs to be moist and why electricity is so deadly against it; if it dries out, it becomes nothing but dust.
  • Spring Jump: The other way it got around its Mighty Glacier statues.
  • Stone Wall: Her greatest asset. Hedorah's gooey body is difficult to injure, both by way of a lack of any weak points, and by way of the corrosive fluids that coat at anything she touches.
  • Stripped to the Bone: The end result of being covered in Hedorah's sludge. Even Godzilla gets it, albeit to a smaller degree, after gouging Hedorah's eye out; as a result of being covered in Hedorah's blood, Godzilla's hand is quickly reduced to bone.
  • Toilet Humor: A kaiju version. Given that she's fed on mainly anything pollution related, which also involves sewage and fecal matter, fans like to yuck it up that she's jokingly seen as this. Doesn't help that her other method of attack is launching chunks of her flesh from an "opening" from the front of her body. Her trying to drown Godzilla in sludge from wherever she discharged it is a dead giveaway of taking a dump.
  • Walking Wasteland: A walking mass of pollution and poison. Everywhere Hedorah goes becomes sludge-infested and toxic. Simply standing too close to it is enough to pretty much destroy human lungs.

    Jet Jaguar

Jet Jaguar

First appearance: Godzilla vs. Megalon, 1973

Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Megalon

Voiced by:: Rie Kugimiya
AKA: Robotman, Superman, King Kong

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Jet_Jaguar_3916.jpg

A robot created by Dr. Goro Ibuki, the Seatopians stole Jet Jaguar to guide Megalon in the vengeance on the surface world. Once Ibuki regains control, Jet Jaguar is sent to recruit the help of Godzilla. Once he returned, he gains sentience of his own and somehow grows in size to fight Megalon. He was doing well until Gigan came along but was saved by the arrival of Godzilla. Together, they drove back both monsters and they parted on good terms. Originally going to get his own show, Jet Jaguar didn't get his debut and was tied in legal troubles with Tsubaraya. These troubles were eventually settled in time for the Godzilla video games, where he was much better received.

  • Adaptational Badass: The video games and comics make Jet Jaguar into a far more formidable combatant.
  • Breath Weapon: In Godzilla: Trading Battle, he emits a blue cloud of some sort as a breath attack.
  • Captain Ersatz: Of Ultraman.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: In Gojiban, he was intended to be a diplomat and example of AI technology. He's not very good at fighting, as a result.
  • Expy: He was based off of Ultraman and Spectreman.
  • Flight: He can hit Mach 3.5 and hover.
  • Glowing Eyes: JJ uses bright lights emitted from his eyes to track Megalon as it burrows underground.
  • Grow Beyond Their Programming: Ibuki gave Jet Jaguar the ability to follow very complex orders, but never intended for him to suddenly become sapient. He especially didn't intend for him to somehow make himself grow to 50 meters tall.
  • Hand Blast: In a couple of video games he can launch rays from his hands, in an attack known as the "Plasma Clap".
  • Humongous Mecha: When he chooses to be.
  • I Know Kung Fu: In the video games, Jet Jaguar can pull off a lot of fighting moves he didn't in the film. These include roundhouse kicks, heel kicks and other such things.
  • Mechanical Lifeforms:
    • Although not designed as such, its programming evolved to the point where it could make decisions for itself. The suit actor was directed to move in a mechanical fashion in the beginning scenes, and in the later ones to act as though something human had entered Jaguar.
    • In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, he's a refugee from an alien planet who was sent to Earth to save us from the aliens who destroyed his home.
  • One-Shot Character: Has only appeared in one film, although his cult status has led to appearances in several video games and in the comic Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, and featured prominently in many episodes of Godzilla Island. He also ends up being a central character in Godzilla: Singular Point, with far more screen-time than even Godzilla!
  • Sizeshifter: As per Ultraman. Since his inventor had no idea he could do that, it's unclear just how he pulls it off. Gojiban treats him like a balloon.
  • Superhero Speciation: In Godzilla Island, it appears that numerous Jet Jaguars have been designed for different purposes. A silver one (possibly a battle model) gets destroyed early on, but one designed for medical and scientific work manages to become a recurring character, along with its female pilot.
  • Ultraman Copy: One of the more notable examples, he was conceptualized to capitalize on the popularity of Ultraman. He has a similar colour scheme, pointy silver head, sizeshifter powers, and fights villainous kaiju just the same.

    Kamoebas

Kamoebas/Kameba

First appearance: Space Amoeba, 1970

Film Appearances: Space Amoeba | Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kameobas_4481.jpg

After Yog's second host, the mutated rock crab Ganimes, was fatally injured, the parasitic alien retreated from the body and divided itself into two halves before possessing another rock crab (which became a second Ganimes) and a rock turtle, mutating it into a giant predatory version called Kamoebas. These two monsters working in tandem almost finished off the humans, until they used their weakness to ultrasonic waves to disrupt Yog's control over them, causing the two behemoths to fight and drag each other into a volcano, which destroyed the Space Amoeba once and for all.

Kamoebas made a cameo appearance in Tokyo S.O.S., washed up on a beach after having been killed by Godzilla.

  • Death by Cameo: Godzilla slaughtered him off-screen, likely either for sport or the two having some territorial dispute over the ocean.
  • Expy: He seems to be Toho’s for Godzilla’s rival Gamera, you could even be forgiven for mistaking him for the more well known turtle-Kaiju had you never seen him prior to his dead body making a cameo in Tokyo S.O.S.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Kameba or Kamoebas?
  • Long Neck: Similar to an actual mata-mata, he conceals a long neck which he can shoot out for surprise attacks.
  • Posthumous Character: His first appearance in the Godzilla franchise is as a washed up corpse.
  • Meaningful Name: Based on kame, Japanese for "turtle", and "amoeba", referring to the alien that possesses him.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: He only appears to prove that Godzilla can kill other giant monsters and make the humans even more frightened of Godzilla's strength.
  • Slashed Throat: How Godzilla offed him.
  • Take That!: Maybe, given that Godzilla's most well-known rival is a turtle as well...
  • Touched by Vorlons: Mutated by the Yog.

    King Caesar

King Caesar

First appearance: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, 1974

Film Appearances: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla | Terror of Mechagodzillanote  | Godzilla: Final Wars

AKA: King Seeser, King Shisa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/180px-Seesar_6737.jpg

A strange monster that resembles a humanoid Shisa, or guardian dog-lion spirit, King Caesar is the protector of the Azumi Royal Family. A construct of stone over a mechanical endoskeleton, he is vital to a prophecy of a monster that would destroy the world. The invading Simeans believe this means MechaGodzilla, so they do anything in their power to prevent to its revival. But King Caesar is revived and squares off against MechaGodzilla. The battle doesn't go in his favor until Godzilla arrives. Together, they manage to destroy MechaGodzilla, and King Caesar returns to dormancy.

King Caesar is not seen again until Godzilla: Final Wars. One of many monsters under Xilien control, he attacks Okinawa and fights Godzilla. Like Rodan and Anguirus, he is spared in defeat.

  • Adaptational Badass: The only way for Caesar to retaliate against kaiju that have energy beam attacks is to absorb them with one eye and have it fired out of the other to deal damage. While it actually worked against MechaGodzilla twice, things took a horrible turn as the machine switched from using his Space Beam with Claw Missiles, as that's where he lost to the mechanical beast. For his fighting game appearance, Godzilla: Unleashed, while he unfortunately lacks the power to redirect long-ranged beams, he possesses his very own Eye Beams at his disposal, which is said to be generated from intense solar energy according to the manual.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed, as he's actually one of the many mind controlled monsters in Godzilla: Final Wars, but when he first appears, he's seen attacking Okinawa before the Xiliens "saved" the residents by teleporting him away.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Actually held his own rather well against Mechagodzilla; even though he was beaten he still managed to assist Godzilla in his bid to defeat their common enemy. In Godzilla: Final Wars however he's not as resilient or tenacious; Godzilla, was far too much for him to handle and he was easily defeated alongside Rodan and Anguirus. The Final Wars version also lacked his notable energy reflection ability.
  • Angry Guard Dog: He is part dog and his duty is to protect Okinawa.
  • Arch-Enemy: The expanded material seems to have made Megalon into King Caesar's primary enemy. In the Rulers of Earth comic series he and Megalon fought a fierce battle in the ancient past that devastated Okinawa, and he also fought Megalon to defend Okinawa in the backstory to the anime trilogy.
  • Asian Lion Dogs: He's based on the shisa, the Okinawan versions of these; his original name in Japanese is in fact "King Shisa". He's a stony, lion-like guardian entity who is awakened from his slumber by a Miko to protect the world from Mechagodzilla.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: King is in his name and in the Rulers of Earth comics it is implied that he has defeated multiple Kaiju as the protector of Okinawa
  • Attack Reflector: One eye absorbs beams, the other shoots it back.
  • Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Slumbers while sealed within a cave, and can only be awakened to battle an oncoming threat by a descendant of the Azumi royal family, summoning him by singing a song.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: He is one of the most physically tenacious of the Kaiju seen in Godzilla. He was faster than Mechagodzilla and damaged his metal body with his physical attacks. He was also able to kick a full sized kaiju around like a soccerball.
    • His tackles and punches did more visible damage to Mecha Godzilla than Godzilla's breath attack.
    • More or less this trope in Godzilla: Unleashed where his combat skills are seemingly on par with Jet Jaguar and/or Kiryu's fighting prowess.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: The evil twin women controlling Battra in Rulers of Earth found this out the hard way. After King Caesar notices them demand that Battra return and continue fighting as he retreats from his skirmish with Caesar, he immediately spins around and crushes the twins in his hand like ants.
  • Breath Weapon: The only time he used this power was in Godzilla Island where he could launch an electrical blast from his mouth.
  • Call-Back: Not seen since Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, at least until Final Wars.
  • Composite Character: How he's depicted in Godzilla: Unleashed, appearance-wise. His humanoid-like bodily structure looks highly similar to his Millennium design from Godzilla: Final Wars, while his head shape is purely based on his Showa iteration.
  • Dub Name Change: He's appropriately called King Shisa in the Japanese version, which is a statue that he's primarily based on unlike in the English Dub of the film as he was strangely known as King Caesar (or King Seeser).
  • Expressive Ears: His ears instantly flare upwards like a dog when he approaches Mechagodzilla. He does it again briefly in Final Wars.
  • Eye Beams: Can freely do this at will in Godzilla: Unleashed by storing solar energy and releasing it in the form of concentrated beams. That's right his own beams have The Power of the Sun.
  • Face–Heel Turn: In Godzilla: Final Wars he had an antagonistic role where has being mind controlled by the Xiliens. Completely justified mostly because the movie itself had no connection to the Showa era films.
  • Fallen Hero: In Rulers of Earth, King Caesar goes from being a noble beast to being just as savage and unrelenting as Megalon upon seeing the people he was supposed to protect laying dead. He is back to normal and redeems himself in the present battling the alien Trilopods.
  • Fighting Clown: Some people find his design goofy-looking but he is no wimp.
  • Gentle Giant: He is a large powerful Kaiju but when his battle with Megalon causes severe damage to his city and people he is devastated.
  • Golem: His body is composed of rock and earth. An interesting cutaway image also shows that King Caesar is actually a construct with an internal metal framework covered with stone.
  • I Know Madden Kombat: He punts Anguirus like a giant spiky curled up soccer ball towards Godzilla in Final Wars, except that Godzilla completely evaded the incoming direction as the balled up ankylosaur is sent rocketing into the hillside where Rodan lays defeated.
  • Informed Ability:
    • Kuronuma, head of the aliens in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, states that they'll be in trouble if King Caesar brings other monsters to life. This is the only time he's stated to have this ability and it seems to have been completely forgotten about.
    • The instruction manual for the Wii version of Godzilla: Unleashed insists that just like his Showa incarnation, he's capable of absorbing mouth blasts and Eye Beams from other monsters and reflecting them back at their respective users as a form of attack. However, there's no way for the player to have him properly use the aforementioned ability in anyway shape or form.
  • In a Single Bound: For a large building-sized golem deity, his jumping ability is insanely ridiculous. According to the PC game Godzilla Movie Studio Tour, it's been said that he's is able to leap into the air at a whopping maximum distance of 1,000 meters. He's only demonstrated this ability once in the official Japanese trailer, where he lunges towards Mechagodzilla. King Caesar makes use of this form of agility in Godzilla: Final Wars where he hurls himself into Godzilla with a flying body block, only to be quickly thrown on top of Anguirus' spiked shell. He makes another huge upward hop, this time to deliver a powerful kick into Anguirus (where he's curled into a ball) as an attempt to stop Godzilla. It didn't work.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: King Seeser and King Shisa are two alternatives, though the latter makes more sense than the alternative and even his official name, since he is based on the Shisa temple guardian.
  • Irony: Caesar was originally the ancient protector and savior of Okinawa in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. The location he's shown attacking in Godzilla: Final Wars? Okinawa. Also doubles as a nice bit of Foreshadowing that he's being mind controlled by the Xiliens, as why else would he attack the place he's supposed to protect?
  • King of Beasts: He's part lion. Specifically, he's based off the Shisa, lion/dog hybrids said to be able ward off evil and keep good spirits with just their maw.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Is pretty dang fast and one of the more agile kaiju, hits hard enough to visibly damage Mechagodzilla's Space Titanium armor (something Godzilla couldn't manage), and can take one heck of a beating.
  • Made of Iron: It took a HELL of a beating from Mech G., maybe even moreso than Godzilla did, but he kept getting up and fighting.
  • Mammal Monsters Are More Heroic: He's designed to be cross between a lion and a canine-like beast since he's heavily based on the mythical Shisa statues from Okinawa mythology who serves as a dedicated guardian to humans, (rather similar to Mothra ), is one of the very few kaiju that are mammalian, (King Kong being one of the biggest examples) and he becomes a reliable and helpful ally to Godzilla as the 2 successfully cooperate destroy Mechagodzilla.
  • Nice Guy: After he recovers from his earlier defeat, he looks upon and sees Godzilla, who's struggling to stand up to Mechagodzilla's strength. He digs himself out of the ditch and goes out of his way to assist him, despite not even knowing who he is at all. It also helps that both him and Godzilla have a common enemy, which is a good reason why he's up there as one of Godzilla's closest friends and allies, up there with Anguirus and Rodan.
  • Posthumous Character: In Rulers of Earth, it may seem this way. Averted as he along with other ancient kaiju like Gorosaurus, Kamoebas, Megaguirus, and Megalon are all alive and consequently awoken in the present to battle the invading aliens and their Trilopod army.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: A powerful and ancient kaiju who has a pair of glowing ruby encrusted eyes, which are basically his most greatest power by using them as organic reflectors that are capable of sending weapons against kaiju opponents who're unfortunate to have energy beam attacks.
  • Shown Their Work: King Caesar's role in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla is very similar to that of the Shisa in Okinawa folklore.
  • Stock Sound Effects: His roars are actually borrowed from King Kong's.
  • Sudden Anatomy: His eyes look more organic in Godzilla: Final Wars rather than resembling jewels.
  • Super-Strength: This golem kaiju's physical strength is something not to be taken lightly as he was able to outright ram into Mechagodzilla (who weighs 40,000 tons) with his own mass, as well as briefly overpowering his opponent by catching one of his strikes by grappling and tossing the alien machine to the ground. If that's not enough, he's also managed to actually wreck and dent in Mechagodzilla's Space Titanium crafted armor by pounding into him with multiple tackles. What really makes King Caesar's strength prominent overall is that according to the Toho Special Effects All Monster Encyclopedia, the extremely powerful metallic alloy that most of the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens purposely utilized to build and construct Mechagodzilla with, is said to be 10 times stronger than Earth's steel.
  • Use Your Head: Along with his high-speed tackles to strike Mechagodzilla (with Godzilla holding him in place), he also uses his granite skull as a battering ram to further damage the robotic kaiju.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Performs an impressive cross-body block in Final Wars.

    Megalon

Megalon

First appearance: Godzilla vs. Megalon, 1973

Film Appearances Godzilla vs. Megalon | Godzilla vs. Megalon (2023)note

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Megalon_9176.jpg

A dimwitted subterranean kaiju vaguely resembling a giant beetle with drills for hands, Megalon was worshipped as a god by the underworld civilisation, Seatopia, which tried to deploy him to punish the surface world for their continued nuclear tests damaging Seatopia. In the Atari fighting game trilogy Megalon is allied with the invading alien Vortaak, fighting alongside their space monsters to destroy humanity and protect Seatopia.

In 2023, he would feature in a short film, also titled Godzilla Vs. Megalon, celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the original film.

  • Adaptational Badass: The version of him from the 2023 short film Godzilla vs Megalon is far stronger than any previous version with a far more intimidating design. He's able to completely level a huge section of the city with one shockwave attack, and us those same shockwaves to throw Godzilla back. He can also combine both drills into a single massive one for a dash attack so powerful, it carries Godzilla backwards thousands of meters. He's also scaled up to the 100 meter size class while the original used the much smaller Showa scaling.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: The 2023 version is much more intelligent than the original version. Not only can he find his way around much easier, he's capable of strategy and planning in combat.
  • Arch-Enemy: To King Caesar in the expanded material, having fought against him in the ancient past in the Rulers of Earth comic series and also in the backstory to the anime trilogy.
  • Art Evolution: His 2023 Reiwa incarnation has been given a lot of noticeable touch ups, his head is slightly widened along with his eyes having more a bright and glossy pale orange glow. Many sections at the front of his body possess layers of exposed red fleshy tissue around his exoskeleton, and his physique overall is visibly sturdier, bulkier, and most of his scales look extremely armored, harkening the appearance of a gigantic insectoid knight.
  • Atrocious Arthropods: He's a gigantic bipedal rhinoceros beetle/cicada-like monstrosity who's a godly being to a wrathful undersea civilization, and he's outfitted with forelimbs ending with drills that can rotate at high speeds to burrow underground, a large horn that blasts rays of lightning, and spits out grenade-like explosives out of his mouth who's basically the Big Bad of his debut. Too bad that the only thing that held him back from being even more threatening was his lack of intellect and childish behavior.
  • Ambiguously Evil: It's questionable whether he knows what he's doing is intentionally destructive. He's been called upon by the leader of Seatopia to kill everyone on the surface in which he does so with the JSDF while laying waste to a city. He even meets Gigan in a friendly and welcoming way and forms a bond with him while they pummel Jet Jaguar to submission.
  • Bash Brothers: With Gigan, cooperating very well during their battle against Godzilla and Jet Jaguar.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Like Gigan he's ridiculously jovial in a battle and seems to enjoy the challenge from his enemies, fighting is more like a game to him.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Him causing mayhem and destruction on Japan alone was already too much to handle... that is until Gigan was called upon from the Seatopians to fight alongside him to confront Godzilla and Jet Jaguar to raise the stakes even further.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Meant to resemble a combination of a mole cricket and a rhinoceros beetle.
  • Blow You Away: Even though this specific ability was never sufficiently demonstrated onscreen at all in the film, the Toho Special Effects All Monsters Encyclopedia explains that his wingbeats are capable of forming sizable gusts of wind that can spread and reach to 1,000 meters per second, with enough force to eradicate skyscrapers.
  • Breath Weapon: He can release small round chunks of... whatever that he's firing out of his mouth that usually explodes into bursts of fire.
    • A couple of promotional theatrical poster stills from his debut portray him firing a spiral-like beam attack out of his mandibles.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: One look at this dude can make anyone wonder if he's actually meant to be a threat with his downright zany design (his iconic drills for hands speaks volume in particular) and he seems to be an oddball who acts less like a monstrous being and more of an oversized bumbling and eccentric child, especially when he does bizarre gestures. Right when he's ordered to destroy everything by the Seatopian leader, he wasted no time destroying the JSDF, toppling locales and cities, and takes Jet Jaguar head-on without hesitation. As soon as he teams up with Gigan, he switches from being ridiculous to vicious when the 2 of them deviously wreck Jet Jaguar literally left and right with a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. They actually came rather close to destroying him, most notably when Megalon kicked him so hard, that sparks flew out of the robot. It's also worth mentioning that if Godzilla hadn't arrived in time to assist the beaten bot, Megalon could've actually destroyed him with Gigan's help.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: His Reiwa incarnation differs from Gigan Rex in a number of ways. While Gigan Rex is an alien invader, Megalon comes from deep underground. While Gigan Rex was a King Mook, Megalon is a singular threat. While the Gigans are technological aliens, Megalon is once more portrayed as the Seatopians' magical deity.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • The last part of the extremely short four-page Godzilla vs. Megalon comic newsprint (which was basically the very first licensed Godzilla comic book in the US) shows Godzilla viciously sinking his teeth right into Megalon's nape as well as his skull. note  The next panel then shows his body lying on the ground, which is seemingly stating that Godzilla has outright murdered him.
    • The 2023 version is sliced in half at the waist by Godzilla's atomic breath.
  • Dumb Muscle: To the point that he needs a guide (Jet Jaguar) when he surfaces, and is confused and enraged when Jet Jaguar leaves his sight.
  • Evil Counterpart: To King Caesar, being the guardian deity to the Seatopians similar to King Caesar being the guardian deity of Okinawa. The difference is that Megalon serves as an attack dog, effectively a sentient weapon for the Seatopians, whereas King Caesar lies sleeping in a cliffside and only awakens when Okinawa is in danger. This contrast is likely why the two are portrayed as each other's Arch-Enemy in the expanded material.
    • To a degree, Megalon can be viewed as one to Mothra. Both of them are enormous insects that coexist with ancient civilizations that have pre-existed humanity as they're greatly revered and looked up to as godly beings to their own respective clans. While the people of Infant Island are affable, they were disdainful towards mankind for using atomic warfare that destroyed their once thriving inhabitants but eventually allowed them to be allied with Mothra after the Shobijin obliged to have her confront Godzilla, the Seatopians themselves also suffered a similar catastrophic event from nuclear testing and their leader waged war after losing their long-awaited tolerance by releasing Megalon himself to Kill All Humans on the surface. While Mothra did become one of Godzilla's enemies (temporarily), they later began to actually tolerate each other's existence rather peacefully when King Ghidorah made himself known to the world, whereas Megalon is remained despised by Godzilla, especially when both he and Gigan tormented and brutalized Jet Jaguar right in front of the King of the Monsters.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Out of all the antagonistic and vile monsters in the Showa era, he quite possibly has all of them beat when it certainly comes to expressing his bombastically over-the-top ditzy mannerisms with an oddball outlook on fighting despite being a Laughably Evil kaiju. His quirky personality may even rival that of Gigan, who's also a jovial psychopathic lunatic himself.
  • Evil Laugh: He lets out some deep vile chortles when he pulls off something sadistic, such as when he blew Jet Jaguar right out of the sky with his napalm blast. Sometimes he clangs his drill arms together while laughing maniacally.
  • Eye Lights Out: Moments after his torso is blown apart by Godzilla's white Atomic Breath, his bulbous orange eyes lose their glow as they start fading into lifeless darkened orbs.
  • Fireballs: Megalon fires them from his mouth-parts, and they're quite explosive. His Reiwa version reimagines them as red explosive spikes.
  • EMP: This is essentially what his Rage attack is in the Atari/Pipeworks fighting games. Megalon charges up energy in a badass pose, then gathers electricity around himself while magnetizing his entire body that draws in his opponents, and releases an enormous shockwave. note  Even his get-up attack in Save the Earth makes him disperse a weaker version of the attack that sends monsters flying.
  • Feed It with Fire: In the fighting games, Megalon is immune to electrical attacks and is healed by them.
  • Flanderization: He's depicted as an alien in a lot of the spin-off material like the games despite the fact that he's an earth based monster who only teamed up with an alien monster once. The manual for Godzilla: Unleashed justifies it as the Seatopians lending Megalon to the Vortaak in support of their invasion.
  • Forgot About His Powers: He's able to fire a lightning bolt from his horn that has demolished tanks and buildings, yet during his battles with Godzilla and Jet Jaguar for no unexplained reason, he's never had the idea to actually use it on either of them. His intellect is either just as bad or somewhat a little higher than Orga's.
  • Four-Legged Insect: Tends to be the only insectoid kaiju in the series who is bipedal, and has forelimbs acting as his arms, unlike Mothra, Battra, and the MUTOs who have multiple limbs.
  • God Is Inept: He's a god to the Seatopians, and he's one of the less intelligent Kaiju.
  • Groin Attack: Gets blasted in the cojones by Godzilla's Atomic Breath making him appropriately scream in agony.
  • Ground-Shattering Landing: A highly destructive and powerful one at that in the 2023 version. Right after he initiated his assault on Godzilla with his newly designed dart-like Geothermal Napalms, he rapidly propels and dive-bombed himself into the very pavement with one of his drill arms so hard, the result of the impact released a colossal shockwave that wiped out a significant portion of an entire city block with no effort.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Godzilla kills him in the 2023 film by slicing him in half at the waist with his white Atomic Breath.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Tried to spit his napalm at Godzilla while lying on the ground when it looked like he was down for the count. It just falls right back into his mouth while ash sizzles out. It didn't seem to harm him much, though.
    • After Gigan fakes his injury and knocks Godzilla down, Megalon spits his bomb near Godzilla's head (which didn't even explode yet) Jet Jaguar repays his new ally in kind by grabbing it and chucks back at him, and then it detonates.
  • Horn Attack: His silvery star-shaped horn emits streaks of jagged yellow lightning bolts out of it. He also swings his head upward with his horn, which is one of his powerful Launcher Move attacks in the Pipeworks fighting games. In the 2023 version, Godzilla breaks the horn off during their battle, robbing him of his lightning powers.
  • Humiliation Conga: Near the end of the movie things took a disastrous turn for both Megalon and Gigan but the former gets his ass handed to him the worst way possible. He suffers an Atomic Ray to the groin, attempted to spit up his napalm bullet right at Godzilla only to have it fall right back into his gullet, Gigan abandons him after being defeated, ergo, leaving him completely defenseless. He painfully endures Godzilla's awesome tail-sliding dropkick twice, gets his tail grabbed by him, gets lifted into the air and being forcefully face-faulted up to 5 times in a row.
  • Informed Ability: The star-shaped horn on his head actually works like a "radar" of sorts, but none of the characters not even the people of Seatopia as well as the leader bring it up at any moment in the film. In fact he's shown to have a horrible sense of direction to the point of needing Jet Jaguar to guide him.
  • I Shall Taunt You: After him and Gigan pulled off a surprise attack on the duo he lands several feet away from Godzilla and does mix between a taunt and a Bring It gesture. He even smacks his ass at the latter two that were imprisoned in his napalm fire.
  • In a Single Bound: He seems fond of doing this rather often at certain times as it can be seen to be his preferred method of movement whenever he's on the ground by making continuous hops in strides.
  • Jerkass: Fired his napalm blast at Jet Jaguar after realizing that the robot was outnumbered and tried to escape; the bug laughs when he hits the ground. He even beckoned Godzilla to engage in a one-on-one match, forcing Godzilla to charge at him. Megalon dickishly kicks him directly in the face for it.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: One of his Fierce Attacks in Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee and Godzilla Save the Earth'' involves Megalon firing an electrical Energy Ball-like projectile out of his drill arms called Advancing Energy Arc. While it isn't a particularly strong move on its own, the attack is able to make other monsters briefly flinch whenever they're struck by it.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: By taking notes from King Ghidorah and Gigan, the bug finally accepts his defeat after getting outrageously double-teamed by Godzilla and Jet Jaguar, he escapes with his life and learns his lesson on not to pick a fight with a 50 meter mutant dinosaur.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Megalon and Gigan take the immense pleasure in beating the oil of Jet Jaguar and both kaiju are no doubt enjoying themselves as the battle becomes one-sided as it seems like nothing can stop them... That is until the King of the Monsters himself arrives to show the villainous duo what for, and thus the odds become highly evened as a two-against-two tag-team ensues. After a lengthy battle, Gigan, not taking any chances, leaves the scene as he outright ditches his partner to save his own skin. The tables are heavily turned on Megalon as he's the one who's forced to suffer a one-sided clobbering by Godzilla and Jet Jaguar. Just like his ally, Megalon has decided that he's had enough punishment and leaves in one piece by going back to Seatopia.
  • Lightning Bruiser:
    • He can go one-on-one against Jet Jaguar and especially Godzilla, who's also a major physical powerhouse no doubt, shrugs off numerous poundings as he likes since he's too stubborn not to give up so easily since he'll resort to smashing his enemies once he's up and running, and if that's not enough, he's shown to be stupendously fleet-footed and limber for a 40,000 ton gigantic insect.
    • The 2023 version is not only able to keep pace with Godzilla (who's shown to be one of the strongest versions), but is capable of hitting very hard with his Pile Bunker style hands. He's also surprisingly agile for his size, doing a lot of jumping attacks.
  • Mix-and-Match Critter: He's purely an amalgamation of various species of insects. Special effects director Teruyoshi Nakano has stated that his head shape is derived from rhinoceros beetles, the coloration, translucent wings, and his body are based on cicadas, and his preferred method of mobility (which involves hopping) are from grasshoppers.
  • Monster of the Week: He's only had one film appearance so far, but has appeared in many video games, comics, books, and the Godzilla Island television series. He'd finally return in 2023 for a short film.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Unintentionally murders the assassin associated with the Seatopians who was controlling Jet Jaguar for their purposes of overtaking the surface.
  • Pile Bunker: His 2023 version gives his drill hands the ability to collapse tighter and then spring forwards on impact to increase the force of his attacks.
  • Poke the Poodle: He repeatedly circles around Jet Jaguar just by hovering slightly above the ground multiple times until he actually becomes dizzy just from watching him do it, which causes the robot to basically fall to the ground. This action alone makes Megalon easily amused as he's heard laughing to himself after doing the deed.
  • Power Glows: His horn glows a brightened yellow and lights up before he fires his Beast Killer Light Ray or whenever he hacks up one of his Geothermal Napalms.
  • Physical God: Serves as one for the people of Seatopia that worships him.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: For all his destructiveness, Megalon tends to give off the vibe that he's a bratty child who treats everything like a game and doesn't really have any idea what he's doing. Without Jet Jaguar to guide him, all he can do is flail around and lash out in confused frustration.
  • Quizzical Tilt: After Jet Jaguar suddenly grows to nearly his height the first thing he does is stare vacantly as if he's actually in disbelief... Until he gets sucker punched.
    • Megalon does it again two times when Godzilla finally enters the fray.
  • Ring of Fire: Creates a large pillar of flames surrounding Godzilla and Jet Jaguar with no means of escape but Jet Jaguar lets Godzilla hold onto him while he flies them out safely.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: For a monster having a deep guttural roar he squeals like a pig hilariously.
  • Shock and Awe: Lightning bolts from his horn.
    • In Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee and Godzilla: Save the Earth respectively, one of his fierce moves involves coating his drills with some kind of electrical force that enhances the power of his strikes.
  • Sky Surfing: In one scene, he briefly blazed through the air by moving in a surfer-like motion after making one leap... only to clumsily fall on his face.
  • Super-Toughness: Like most kaiju, this gigantic bug can withstand military weapons as he even took a couple of maser blasts to the eye without suffering any injury. His body is coated with a shell hardened like diamond as he can take wave after wave of physical punishment from Godzilla and Jet Jaguar and can continue to get back on his feet. He's even accidentally swallowed his own Geothermal Napalm, which practically harmed the inside of his mouth as smoke sizzled out of his mandibles.
  • The Paralyzer: The 2023 version's horn lightning can stun Godzilla in place, leaving him open to attack. However, Godzilla figures out how to counter it with his nuclear powers on his second attempt, forcing him into melee.
  • This Is a Drill: His arms end in half-drill bits that he can spin separately to attack opponents with, or put together into a complete drill to burrow through the ground. 2023 Megalon's don't spin, but have a new Pile Bunker feature but can link together the two into a huge drill for his strongest attack.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: His Geothermal Napalm Bullets seem to function like organic grenades. While the projectiles tend to explode upon contact at his targets, one of them took at least a couple of seconds before it even exploded, such as when Jet Jaguar managed to grab and toss the explosive away from Godzilla and sent it right back at Megalon instead.
  • Thunder Beetle: He is a rhinoceros beetle-like kaiju and one of his (many) attacks is the ability to shoot lightning-like energy bolts from his horn.
  • Tough Beetles: He is a giant rhinoceros beetle-like kaiju who, besides being very strong and tough, can also fire lightning from his horn, spit napalm bombs from the mouth, and has got drills for hands.
  • Tunnel King: Those drills do something useful!
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Let's just say that strategy is something that he hardly ever does nor even bother to do as tenaciously strong as he is. The bug even has many powerful assets in his arsenal that can be potentially fatal to other kaiju opponents, two of which that are his massive drill appendages and his exploding napalms that can come in handy for surprise tactics and long-ranged attacks. He mainly just rushes forward rather aimlessly to get the jump on Jet Jaguar, and later Godzilla, and even if he can hold his own by overpowering them in physical power, they at the very least actually know how to fight and are more proficient in hand-to-hand combat (especially the latter). Justified since this was his first time interacting with kaiju in a battle.
    • Even though he's not very intelligent (compared to the rest of the kaiju) he was surprisingly clever enough to create walls of fire to trap Godzilla and Jet Jaguar, especially when the former was too busy helping out the latter to recover.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: After trapping Godzilla and Jet Jaguar in the wall of flames, the humanoid robot uses his flight while Godzilla holds onto him and escape unscathed. Upon seeing this, Megalon becomes hilariously flabbergasted and even does an actual gesture of pure disbelief as a rebuttal.

    Takora

Takora

First appearance: Kure Kure Takora, 1973 — 1974

Voiced by: Yoshiko Ota

Takora is a greedy anthropomorphic octopus kaiju.

    Titanosaurus

Titanosaurus

First appearance: Terror of Mechagodzilla, 1975

Film Appearances: Terror of Mechagodzilla | Godzilla: Final Warsnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/titanosaurus1_9225.jpg

Similar to Godzilla in that he is believed to be a dinosaur that returned to the sea and survived there through the great extinction, Titanosaurus was a peaceful creature until the Simians returned to earth and used their technology to enslave the aquatic giant, wielding him as a weapon against the human race. When his controller was destroyed, Titanosaurus attempted to flee back into the ocean, but Godzilla pressed his attack and (supposedly) killed him.

  • Adaptational Badass: For his film appearance, being exposed to supersonic waves can horribly affect and disorient the sea beast, which causes him to start reeling haphazardly. Godzilla: Unleashed has him firing his own supersonic beams as his actual Breath Weapon, and is able to interact in a Beam-O-War against any kaiju who has beam weapons.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In Godzilla: Unleashed he's on the Mutants' side whose only purpose was to seek out the various crystals and become empowered by them to wipe out everything in existence, though the manual does state he's not specifically evil, more or less seeking power to preserve himself and his lifecycle.
  • Anti-Villain: A character notes that Titanosaurus was actually quite gentle. And what does he do when the mind-control is temporarily broken? Breaks off his fight with Godzilla and quickly escapes into the sea. All the bad stuff he did was under mind control.
  • Badass Normal: Aside from his tail making hurricanes he was a rather good brawler who's beaten Godzilla himself to a stand still. (Under mind control)
  • Blow You Away: His tail (which may be meant to be used like a fluke underwater) can be used like a fan, easily taking Godzilla off his feet.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: He's normally a peaceful dinosaur that sleeps on the ocean floor, but he's mind-controlled in Terror of Mechagodzilla to become a brutal monster made to attack Godzilla.
  • Combat Parkour: Can pull off a very impressive frontward flip for his Scissor Kick in Godzilla: Unleashed.
  • Dub Name Change: Titanosaurus is called "Titano Kong" in the Italian dub.
  • Evil Is Bigger: He's actually taller and heavier than Godzilla (by ten meters and 10,000 tons), although he's not actually evil, but forced to fight and destroy via mind control.
  • Gentle Giant: When free of mind control, he quickly drops whatever destruction he was in the middle of and flees.
  • Giant Equals Invincible: Played with. He is pretty much immune to bullets and mortars, but he is still vulnerable to sonic waves and Godzilla's atomic ray, after receiving multiple hits from it.
  • Glass Cannon: At first when he attacked a city, he's highly impervious to shrug off military bombardment as well as being able to lay a smackdown onto Godzilla by staggering him with his powerful punches and kicks, showing that he's a great physical threat. However supersonic waves does grievous harm and Godzilla's Atomic Breath can do a number on him, especially when one blast punctured his chest as it made a tiny hole with smoke sizzling out.
  • In a Single Bound: Made an impressive leap reaching to sky level to let a fighter jet hit his face.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He gave Godzilla one of his more brutal melee fights, and is pretty dang fast for a giant monster.
  • Man Bites Man: Gnaws right into Godzilla's upper lip, along with the roof of his mouth, and effortlessly flings his 20,000 ton body right into the air using just his mouth.
  • Mega Maelstrom: How he makes himself known to the world (as well as making his debut in the movie) when he uses his fan-like tail fin underwater to create a whirlpool, sinking a submarine operated by an expedition team who were trying to locate the remains of Mechagodzilla.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: By looking at his design, he has the crocodilian jaw, lengthened neck, and the aquatic back fin of a Spinosaurus, and the shape of his head as seen from a sideview where his fins are placed on the sides of head looks something to that of a seahorse at certain angles.
  • Non-Indicative Name: He goes by the name of "Titanosaurus", which was a dinosaur that's related to a species of sauropods and he shares practically no resemblance to the actual real-life animal he's named after. Instead, he strongly looks more like an upright Spinosaurus with longer and extended fingers.
  • One-Shot Character: Downplayed; while he's only appeared in one film, because of his strong fanbase he has made numerous appearances in video games and comics.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Has maroon colored flesh that's also covered in dozens of black spots around his body, who is paired with MechaGodzilla as a duo and tasked with bringing destruction to humanity and their cities. This is drastically subverted earlier in the film where it's stated that Dr. Mafune saw him as a much more gentler and peaceful kaiju who wishes no harm on other beings, which makes his death all the more depressing since Godzilla, who was unaware of him being mind-controlled, merely just saw him as another antagonistic kaiju threat who's causing trouble to the world. If it weren't for Mafuni's technology using him as a living vessel for his vengeance, Godzilla would've likely spared him if given the chance that is.
  • Revisiting the Roots: After making odd sci-fi monsters like Gigan and Megalon, it was a step back to the old-days with Titanosaurus, a giant dinosaur with natural powers.
  • Sea Monster: A giant surviving dinosaur that took to life in the oceans.
  • Shoot the Dog: On his own, he's harmless. But under alien control, he wreaks all kinds of havoc. Also on the receiving end, since Godzilla blasts him off a cliff into the ocean even after he's freed of the aliens' control and no longer a threat.
  • Super-Scream: In Godzilla: Unleashed, his ranged weapon is a sonic beam. Explained by him using echolocation to navigate the dark depths, but ironic because his weakness in the movie was sonics. (A possible explanation for it is that Titanosaurus' natural sonar, probably used to navigate the depths of the ocean, where little light goes, is turned into a scrambled mess and renders his vision near-useless, but no official explanation is given).
  • Super-Strength: Evidently, Titanosaurus is incredibly strong; strong enough to lift the equal-sized Godzilla by the upper jaw with his head alone. He could also send Godzilla sailing nearly to the horizon with a single kick.
  • Tragic Monster: Constantly being used and forced to do things beyond his control, he is finally free at the end, only to face the wrath of a tired and bitter Godzilla, who didn't know about the mind control. Katsura can also count, to an extent.
  • Uncertain Doom: After taking one final blast from Godzilla's Atomic Breath, he plummets over a cliffside and falls directly into the sea. Given that he's an aquatic monster, there's a possibility that he could've swam off somewhere deeper into the waves being undetected by Godzilla as soon as he sets foot in the ocean.
  • Villain Team-Up: With Showa Mechagodzilla (although mind control was involved so the partnership wasn't exactly willing).
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Averted. Titanosaurus is susceptible to sonic waves and they had to build a special weapon just to take him down. Without it the final battle may have gone very differently.
  • Whateversaurus: He's some kind of aquatic dinosaur sort of resembling a spinosaur (but, weirdly, with a pair of antennae). He coincidentally has the same name as a real (and dubious) dinosaur genus, but bears no similarities.
  • Your Size May Vary: In one brief shot, Mechagodzilla and Titanosaurus randomly look like they are the size of mountains, nearly filling up the sky, instead of about 50 and 60 meters tall respectively.

    Zone Fighter

Zone Fighter

First appearance: Zone Fighter, 1973

Played by: Kazuya Aoyama (also human form actor)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Screen_shot_2011-01-22_at_9_54_39_PM_6701.png

Zone Fighter is an alien from the planet Peaceland who came to Earth along with his family after their homeworld was destroyed by the evil Garoga aliens, leaving them as the sole survivors. On Earth, the Zone family take on the secret identity of the Sakimori family, with Zone Fighter himself being the family's oldest child Hikaru. But with the Garoga having set their sights on Earth, the Zone family take the duty of thwarting their invasion plans. While their parents Yoichiro and Tsukiko and grandfather Raita provide support and monitoring, Hikaru, along with his sister Hotaru (Zone Angel) and his little brother Akira (Zone Junior), battle the Garoga in the field, assuming their superhero forms by chanting "Zone Fight Power". But when the Garoga unleash one of their Terror Beast kaiju, Zone Fighter himself shouts "Zone Double Fight" to increase his size to match those of the monsters and take them down.

  • An Ice Person: His Meteor Freezer attack can eject a frosty mist that can he spray from his fingers.
  • Alien Invasion: Subverted by Zone and his family who protect the Earth from kaiju called "Terror Beasts" but played straight by the vile Garoga who destroyed Planet Peaceland, Zone's homeworld.
  • Attack Reflector: Zone can make a force field shaped outline like a shield called the Meteor Reflection Barrier which sent King Ghidorah's Gravity Beams right back at him.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Zone Fighter can grow to a 62 meter tall, 55,000 tons giant sentai more powerful than Godzilla, but only for a few minutes.
  • Bash Brothers: In certain episodes of the series, Godzilla himself will actually come to his aid to even the odds if any Terror Beast is far too powerful for Zone Fighter to overcome. They truly are a powerful duo when it comes to kicking assess, and more often than not, Godzilla will save his life from getting curb-stomped and Zone Fighter likely does the same in sheer gratitude. They also shake hands in victory.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: Fought King Ghidorah in space and can even fly around without gravity affecting his mobility. Justified since he's an alien himself.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Has a tendency to yell out many of his attacks in almost every episode whenever he's battling a Terror Beast. It's basically the go-to approach of Tokusatsu after all.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His Zone Meter, the belt-like structure placed on his waistline, glows a certain color that indicates the varying levels of his power. It glows a blue when his strength is at its greatest capacity, yellow if his power is being drained from him, and when it reaches red, he has only has about 110 seconds left as he's on the verge of morphing back into his human form.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Engages in a competitive sparring bout with none other than Godzilla, a powerful kaiju who's seen as indestructible force and the 2 are seen to be seemingly evenly matched in terms of combat and strength. While Godzilla has had his own share of losses, Zone Fighter was able to best him in combat and topple him down with his Meteor Windmill and wins. Godzilla surprisingly takes this defeat with sheer sincerity afterwards.
  • Energy Absorption: Only through his antenna whenever his proton power is extremely lowered as his energy can be rejuvenated with the help of Zone Angel and Zone Junior by sharing their own power into his.
  • Eye Scream: In one episode he karate chops a monster so hard his eyes pop out and then Zone Fighter rips them out!
  • Force and Finesse: Any time he and Godzilla team up to face a Terror Beast, their own combat styles are highly different from one another since Zone, who's no slouch in strength, utilizes more of his advanced martial arts along with his agility, speed, evasion, and acrobatics while Goji fights more like a boxer by overpowering most of his enemies with his sheer brawn.
  • Glass Cannon: Zone Fighter can dish out a lot of damage but he has a hard time taking it, needing help from Godzilla on at least five separate occasions.
  • Gatling Good: His notorious Meteor Missiles, which are barreled gauntlets that are wrapped around his wrists that launch numerous rounds of missiles at Terror Beasts, which is his primary Finishing Move against them. They're mostly powerful enough to kill any kaiju if they've taken enough damage that is. He's able to fully upgrade them into stronger variants, which is called Double Anti-Missile Might.
  • In a Single Bound: Even in kaiju size he can jump to impressive heights at 37 times his height, with almost gymnastic finesse. He even made Godzilla applaud him after sticking a landing during a sparring match.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He can run and fly around at zooming speeds, and is able to overpower and kill almost any Terror Beast that comes in his way. He's called the Meteor Human for a reason.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: His other shielding technique, the Meteor Zone Barrier, involves him creating a red door-shaped barrier that negates and actually halts any attack that's unable to bypass it.
  • Power Source: The Zone Marker (the antenna placed on his head) is where all of Zone Fighter's devastating powers are drawn from. The power he has in his giant form can only last for so long, but luckily for him, the antennas are easily replaceable and they can be refilled by Zone Angel and Zone Junior exchanging their own power into him. They also pilot a flying vehicle, named Smokey, where it can fire a beam into the antenna that can boost Zone Fighter's strength.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: His Meteor Punch technique allows him to punch at machine gun speeds.
  • Strong and Skilled: He's more than capable of duking it out against many Terror Beasts with a powerful combination of his giant form possessing kaiju-like levels of physical strength that's on par with Godzilla's, along with exhibiting a plenty amount of fighting abilities and skillful martial arts maneuvers.
  • Super Power Lottery: He is an absolutely powerful individual in his own right thanks to the crazy arrangement of powers he's been given. Aside from resorting to using his Meteor Missiles to dispatch Terror Beasts, Zone also possesses the power to fire arrow-shaped energy blasts from his hands and fingertips, can make objects emit electricity by rubbing it on his body at high speeds, has vast Super-Strength, Super-Speed, is capable of creating powerful barriers that can reflect attacks and defend himself, and can fully breathe in the vacuum of space with no negative effects because of his alien physiology.
  • Super-Strength: In one episode, he was shown to move a hillside without straining himself, and once held an incoming stomp of a Terror Beast when he was in his human form.
  • Super-Speed: It's stated in the Zone Fighter Pictorial Book that his running speed is around 1,000 kilometers an hour.
  • Super-Toughness: His own skin itself has the immense durability to go through such disastrous temperatures ranging from -150 degrees to 1,000 degrees.
  • Ultraman Copy: While he's got more grey and little red, much like Jet Jaguar, Zone was basically an attempt to cash in on the Ultraman craze.
