Aoi Cosmosnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_aoi_cosmos_anime.jpg

The Aoi Cosmos is the second cosmos visited by the Edens Zero crew, also named the Poseidon Nero Sector after its supreme ruler, Emperor Nero. Representing the season of Summer, the space here is filled with water and bountiful fish, some even larger than spaceships.

Foresta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_foresta_anime.png
Click here to see Foresta's manga design

The Verdant Planet, located in the Aoi Cosmos's Coral Sector. Its entire surface is covered in lush, green jungles. Ordinarily a world where humans and machines coexist in harmony, Foresta is plunged into chaos when Demon King Ziggy drives much of its robot population berserk by a computer virus, sparking a deadly uprising against humans.

    In General
  • Arboreal Abode: Foresta's entire civilization is a mix of this and a Tree Top Town, as all the buildings shown appear to be made out of hollowed-out trees.
  • Human Pet: All of Foresta's humans are effectively treated as dogs by the infected bots, who walk them through the streets, lock them in cages, and leave them out to rot once they drop dead.
  • Kill All Humans: The infected robots' initial goal is simply to enslave humans, but Müller tampers with the virus to change it so the robots begin slaughtering them instead.
  • Offscreen Rebuilding: Following the Aoi War, Xiaomei narrates that tensions rose between humans and robots due to the virus-induced uprising, but thanks to Rickard's efforts, both sides begin to make peace and rebuild their world.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: Due to a virus spread by the Big Bad, nearly all the androids on the planet have gone berserk and enslaved much of its human population.

Humans

    Aruna

Aruna

Voiced by: Haruki Iwata (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_aruna.png

A little orphan girl who lives alone with her bot friend, Miimi.

  • Break the Cutie: She's targeted by crazed robots while looking for Miimi, and is left in tears when the crew breaks the news about Miimii's death.
  • Children Are Innocent: She's as sweet as can be, and can't understand why all the planet's bots have suddenly turned on everyone.
  • Heal the Cutie: She takes it hard when she learns about Miimi's death, but thanks to Witch's gentle consolation, she's able to smile happily again by the next week.
  • Innocent Bystander: Rebecca saves her while she's being attacked by killer robots.
  • Pint-Sized Kid: She's about two heads tall, and nearly everyone in the Edens Zero towers over her.
  • Recurring Extra: Her role isn't big, but she makes frequent appearances on Foresta when Rebecca picks her up, and forms a bit of the bond with the crew before becoming Xenolith's ward.

    Allen and Audrey

Allen and Audrey

Allen voiced by: Tomohiro Ōno (Japanese)
Audrey voiced by: Mei Shibata (Japanese)

An engaged couple who become pets to the robots Willem and Kevin, respectively.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Ever since getting turned into a Human Pet, Allen is left with nothing but to desperately plead the robots to let him be with Audrey again.
  • Bit Character: Both of them are given focus simply to show the nightmare of humans under the enslavement of bots.
  • Dog Food Diet: Audrey has been forced by Kevin into eating nothing but dog food for a week, which leaves her at death's door.
  • Gilded Cage: Allen is treated decently enough by Willem, being well-fed and properly cleaned, but being kept apart from his malnourished and possibly dying fiancee means he's anything but happy.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: A dark example. They were due to be married before the robot uprising, and now they're forced to live in separate houses as Human Pets. They manage to reunite when Audrey's owner kills Allen's, but their fate after that remains uncertain.
  • Uncertain Doom: Given the sorry state Audrey is in thanks to her owner, it's never shown whether she survives the robot uprising.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: They're never seen again after escaping from their robot masters, so it's never known whether they survive the chaos that follows, and if so, how they'd react to the robots returning to normal after putting them through hell.

Machines

    Xenolith

Xenolith

Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (Japanese) Foreign VAs

Ether Gear: Satan Gravity

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_xenolith_anime_3.png

The founder of the Magimech School of Gravity Martial Arts, inventor of Gravity Ether Gear, and Ziggy's mentor. He lived during the Dark Ages as a human from the Heavenly Knights of the Dancing Sakura, but for reasons unknown, he inhabited a robot body around the point of his death, living in almost complete obscurity on his old home world of Foresta.

  • Ambiguously Gay: While training the heroes, he misinterprets Weisz's wish for the girls to be tied up in sexy poses as Weisz wanting to be tied in a sexy way, so Xenolith obliges while blushing the entire time.
  • Always Someone Better: Being the inventor of Gravity Ether Gear who's spent at least a millennium honing the art, it's only natural that his abilities far eclipse Shiki's. Case in point, Shiki's Gravity Center can only make himself or other, reasonably sized objects heavier, while Xenolith's version of the same technique affects the entire planet Foresta's gravitational pull. He is noted to be far weaker than Ziggy, however, having gotten so old that he takes Shiki under his wing in the hope the boy can surpass them both.
  • Badass Teacher: He was this for Ziggy way back in the day, and he demonstrates his mettle when he raises Foresta's gravitational pull to stop the Robot War with a mere flex of the arm.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's one of the few friendly robot faces on Foresta that Shiki meets, being kind enough to help him back on his feet after his Curb-Stomp Battle against Justice.
  • Eating Machine: He drops a fruit from a tree and eats it while chatting with Shiki. No indication is given for whether or not he actually needs to eat, since advanced androids like Pino have no taste buds and can't gain nutrition from regular food.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Powerful and knowledgeable in gravity manipulation as he is, he's also a show-off who prides himself in his own public image.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When he first appears after Shiki gets the No-Holds-Barred Beatdown of his life, the first things Xenolith does are help Shiki get back on his feet by relieving his pain, give him some pointers on the potential of true gravity, and then pin all of Foresta's rampaging robots down with his gravity to stop their "racket", showing him to be a benevolent and wise figure.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: The most we get of his human form is a silhouette showing he had sharp eyes, spiky Barbarian Longhair, and a Manly Facial Hair.
  • Fantastic Fighting Style: As with Shiki and Ziggy, Xenolith uses the Magimech Attack style, which he also developed in the first place.
  • Gravity Master: He's the guy who created the very same gravity techniques used by Shiki and Ziggy—the latter of whom was his pupil—and proves his mastery by raising the gravity of all of Foresta to hinder the robots' rampage. He also knows how to alter figurative concepts of weight and attraction.
  • Healing Hands: Downplayed. One of the seemingly infinite appliances of his gravity is the power to "lighten" others' pain, but it can't heal their injuries outright.
  • Hidden Depths: While his expertise lies primarily in gravity arts, he also has a firm grasp of firearms and swordplay to school Weisz and Homura.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Xenolith boasts that his human form had a "wild" appearance that was quite appealing to the ladies.
  • In the Hood: He first appears wearing a hooded cloak with Glowing Eyes of Doom underneath.
  • Meaningful Name: A xenolith is a piece of rock that gets stuck within another type of rock while the latter is being formed.
  • Old Master: He's supposedly been around for one thousand years, and not only does his mastery of gravity far outweigh Shiki's, but he also mentored the very bot who trained Shiki.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Downplayed. When Shiki points out he's supposed to be dead, Xenolith clarifies that he is—or rather, his human body is.
  • Semantic Superpower: Being the master and inventor of Gravity Martial Arts, he's found a way to apply gravity in ways that transcend the concept of heaviness, such as "lightening" others' pain, causing others' hearts to "fall" into the user, and "attracting" Rebecca's future self to facilitate her Mental Time Travel.
  • The Snark Knight: He's one of the most dry-witted people Shiki meets, seen when he stops the robot insurrection on Foresta just to get some peace and quiet, tries to provoke reactions from Shiki other than Stunned Silence towards his exposition, and muttering that he should've gotten a patent when he finds out Ziggy spread his techniques without consent.
  • Trickster Mentor: While helping the Edens Zero crew train in the ship's VR space, Xenolith pranks them by abruptly shapeshifting into the Big Bad and showing Shiki a simulation of Rebecca getting crushed to death, just to give him an incentive to overcome his crippling bondage weakness. It works with aplomb, though the prank annoys Shiki and Hermit (the former for making him think Rebecca was in danger, and the latter because she thought there was an actual intrusion for a second).
  • Was Once a Man: He used to be human, but transferred his consciousness into a robot body because of, in his own words, "reasons".

    Miimi

Miimi

Voiced by: Aria Seki (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_miimi.png

A cute and innocent helper robot who is friends with Aruna, and avoids being infected by the virus.

  • Ambiguous Gender: It's impossible to tell what Miimi's gender is, and the official manga translation walks around it. The Crunchyroll translation refers to Miimi as a girl, however.
  • Bit Character: Shows up to established that there are robots who are appalled by what the infected ones are doing, and then gets killed to show how their enemies couldn't care less.
  • Cute Machines: The egg-shaped design helps make Miimi look especially harmless, and adds extra shock value to the poor little bot's Surprisingly Sudden Death.
  • Dub Name Change: Miimi's original name is "Mii-chan", indicating that it's actually just a nickname and their real name is "Mii".
  • Kill the Cutie: Miimi's brains get blown out by Mora when all the poor bot wanted was to help save their robot friends from being destroyed.
  • Robot Buddy: Miimi is Aruna's best friend and the closest thing to a family she's ever known.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Miimi gets killed by Mora to demonstrate the complete disregard that Commando Team Beast—and Poseidon Nero by extension—have towards robots.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The translation flip-flops between spelling Miimi's name as "Miimii" with a fourth "I".
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Miimi's death comes right in the middle of a charming moment where Shiki makes the little bot his friend.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Beyond being one of the only bots on Foresta who aren't brainwashed, Miimi gets killed off before any of this is explored in detail.

    Willem and Kevin

Willem and Kevin

Willem voiced by: Takayuki Nakatsukasa (Japanese)
Kevin voiced by: Sōma Shiomi (Japanese)

Two robots who take ownership of the humans Allen and Audrey, respectively.

  • Affably Evil: Compared to Kevin, Willem keeps his own Human Pet well-cleaned and fed, and takes extra care not to break him physically. Nevertheless, he pays no concern to the fact that his "pet" is completely miserable.
  • Bit Character: Like their Human Pets, these two simply serve as examples of Ziggy's designs for robot-kind, and what befalls any robot who doesn't adhere to it.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Willem gladly keeps humans as slaves thanks to his reprogramming, but he draws the line at outright abusing them, preferring to think of himself as better than humans who wouldn't think twice about breaking robots. Kevin kills him for this.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Kevin's conversation with Willem over the treatment of each other's Human Pets seems pleasant enough, until attention is drawn to how Kevin has been abusing "his" human the entire time. Then he abruptly kills Willem without warning for calling him out on it.
  • Kick the Dog: In stark contrast to Willem, Kevin treats his Human Pet horrendously: he hasn't bathed her, feeds her nothing but dog food, and relentlessly kicks her for speaking out of line, all of which has left her broken and on the verge of death.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Kevin's face is built to have no expression besides a smile, making his callous treatment of Audrey and his murder of Willem all the more chilling.
  • Pet the Dog: Willem, at the very least, treats his Human Pet well. Kevin sees fit to kill him for this.
  • Your Head Asplode: Willem gets his head blasted off by Kevin after a conflict of opinion.

Mud Roll

The Planet of Mud, a muddy world with muddy clouds that rain mud, leading to just about every mud-related phenomenon imaginable.

    In General
  • Covered in Mud: The planet itself is a perpetual victim of this, as are any unfortunate visitors, due to mud that rains down from the sky.
  • Eldritch Location: A benign example. The mud on this planet does some very peculiar things that can't be found on any other world: there's raining mud, sinking mud, mud geysers, mud rivers, bouncing mud, singing mud...the list goes on.
  • Weird Weather: Mud rains down from the sky from odd-looking clouds that seem to be made of mud.

Nero 1 (The Temple)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3070f2d3_00ee_4d41_a927_6ebf7840ae42.png

The Nero Empire's capital planet, more commonly known as the Temple. Emperor Nero and his son, Prince Shura, live on this planet in the palace Deep Snow.

    In General
  • Artistic License – Space: Half of the planet is submerged in water, which is blocked out by the Ether in the atmosphere to prevent global flooding. There's no telling how such a phenomenon would affect a planet in reality, but it looks fantastical.
  • Offscreen Rebuilding: Xiaomei narrates that the planet gets restored after the Aoi War.
  • Scenery Gorn: The planet's city and imperial palace get badly busted up in the battle between Imperial and Union Army forces. Ziggy takes advantage of this by turning the floor of Nero's palace into a floating arena where he can get a good view of the planet crumbling around them.
  • Shout-Out: The imperial palace, Deep Snow, shares its name with an Oración Seis member from Rave Master.

Nero 66

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/11590324_5882_4e11_9950_6715bfbaabcf.png

The Planet of Ash, a remote and desolate world where the air itself is filled with toxic soot. This planet is the site of the All-Link System, a network designed to grant total control over all machines in the Aoi Cosmos. It serves as Prince Shura's base of operations during the Aoi War.

    In General
  • Earth-Shattering Kaboom: The planet and much of the surrounding space are destroyed by Ziggy after he uses All-Link to activate the 20,000 anti-matter bombs planted by Shura that were warped there from the Temple by Nero.
  • Sea of Sand: Ash in this case, from what little is shown of the planet, the whole world is orbited by ash, and its only featured civilization is stuck in an ash storm.

Nero 73

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4c6d036a_904a_43a8_bb57_2c8273aaf206.png

A technologically advanced planet that's part of the Nero Empire.

    In General
  • City Planet: Implied to be this by its technological appearance.
  • Hollow World: The planet appears to be this from outer space, consisting of nothing but metalic plates built around some kind of void.

Red Cave

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_red_cave_anime.png
Click here to see Red Cave's manga design

A world commonly known as the Fire Planet, but is actually covered in oceans. Its true namesake is its volcanic caverns, which are filled with flames and magma that pursue those who enter as if they had minds of their own. The planet's robot civilization is powered by one of the Mother Relics, but its theft 200 years ago triggered a planetary flood and caused all the machines to shut down.

    In General
  • Binary Suns: The planet has twin suns, made prominent by the sunset that occurs once the crew arrives.
  • Disney Death: The Red Cave bots appear to have suffered the same fate as the Granbell bots, with their bodies littering the streets of the Underwater Ruins. As Nadia explains, however, they were simply cut off from their source of indefinite energy left behind by the Relic; once the Relic is returned, all the robots promptly boot back online.
  • Floating Continent: The planet is home to numerous floating islands.
  • Guardian Entity: The Underwater Ruins where Nadia lives are guarded by a giant octopus monster.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Zig-Zagged. It's called "Red Cave, the Fire Planet", but the surface is a beautiful tropical paradise with a mixture of Water and Light Ether in the atmosphere, ideal for a Beach Episode. However, deep below the water's surface is a volcanic cave with seemingly sentient flames, which Rebecca speculates is the origin of Red Cave's name. Then it's revealed that the disappearance of Mother's Relic is what caused the water levels to rise in the first place; when the Relic is returned, the planet goes back to its original state.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: The giant octopus that attacks Shiki's gang is simply a Guardian Entity trying to rout out any intruders. It's shown to be quite friendly when seeing the crew off after the planet's robots are restored to life.
  • Scenery Porn: What's shown on the planet's surface is an oceanic paradise with twin suns and floating islands everywhere. The rain of Light Ether that occurs during the sunset creates a breathtaking light show.
  • Underwater Ruins: There are Grecian ruins of a dead robot civilization with ties to Mother beneath the planet's waves.

    Nadia

Nadia

Voiced by: Rena Maeda (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_nadia_anime.png

The android guardian of Red Cave's Temple of the Mother Beacon.

  • The Aloner: Due to her power cable keeping her alive while all the other robots have shut down, she's left as the only sapient being in her home city, if not the entire planet, apart from the octopus that defends the temple from intruders. Despite this, she doesn't mind in the absolute slightest.
  • Break the Cutie: She's absolutely shattered when Witch breaks the news of what really happened to Andrew over the past 200 years, and briefly contemplates that life simply isn't worth living without him. Thanks to his success in restoring the planet to its original state, however, she decides to persevere.
  • Character Catchphrase: "I am an old model."
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She has a tendency to trip and fall because the energy cord attached to her body limits her movements, but she takes it all in stride.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: Initially, Nadia is so devastated when Witch tells her of Andrew's death that she rips out the energy cable keeping herself alive because she can't stand the thought of living in a world without him. However, she soon finds the strength to push onward thanks to Witch's emotional support and the Relic restoring power to her and all the robots.
  • I Will Wait for You: She has spent the past 200 years faithfully waiting for her love, Andrew, to return with the temple's stolen treasure that kept the robots of her planet running. She tragically didn't learn that he never would have lived that long to begin with, and would have kept on waiting had Witch not revealed the truth.
  • Immortal Immaturity: She's 200 years old and constantly points it out to others, but has all the traits of The Ingenue.
  • The Ingenue: Exaggerated. She's a gentle, clumsy, hopeless romantic who needs the severe life expectancy gap between herself and her human lover spelled out for her, but she's also over 200 years old.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: She is a 200-year-old android who is deeply in love with her ordinary human engineer, Andrew. It never occurred to her all that time since they last saw each other that humans don't usually live as long as she does.
  • The Pollyanna: She has spent 200 years all alone on her planet, yet she manages to smile as she continues hopefully waiting for her lover to return to her. She only cries when she learns that Andrew is long dead, but she's able to smile again after Red Cave is restored to its original state.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She's a beautiful and naive Robot Girl who was built 200 years ago and is still running.
  • Robot Girl: She has more blatantly mechanical features than other modern androids, having exposed wiring and gaps in her joints, but she's otherwise an extremely beautiful woman.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She has light pink hair to match her sweet-natured, naive character.
  • The Shut-In: She is tethered to the temple floor by an energy cord in her back that Andrew made to keep her operational long after the robots were cut off from their energy source. After the Relic is returned to the planet, she doesn't need the cord anymore and is free to move around.
  • Super-Strength: Being an android, she has the physical strength to tear the cable out of her back when she rushes to be by her dead beloved's side.
  • True Blue Femininity: Her dress is colored blue and white in the anime, emphasizing her feminine and genteel demeanor.

    Andrew

Andrew

Voiced by: Yūya Murakami (Japanese)

The human caretaker of Red Cave's robots, and Nadia's lover. He left the planet 200 years ago in search of its stolen Relic before tragedy struck and claimed his life.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He died after a meteoroid struck his ship on his way back to Red Cave, knocking him off course and leaving him to drift helplessly through space for 200 years.
  • Dead Man Writing: His ship's control panel has the words "Nadia, love of my life" engraved on it, which she doesn't discover until after his corpse returns.
  • The Engineer: He helped keep the robots of Red Cave in working condition, and made Nadia's power cord to reactivate her after the planet's treasure—which transferred energy to the robots—was stolen.
  • Posthumous Character: He was around 200 years ago, and has long since withered away to a skeleton.
  • Robosexual: He was a human engineer who took the Robot Girl Nadia as his lover.

Sandra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4f5253c6_629a_48ba_9b4e_5ce9f2f39c5a.png

The Planet of Sand, nine-tenths of which is covered in an arid desert. Most of its known denizens are refugees who had their freedoms stripped away by Nero's tyrannical rule.

    In General
  • "Arabian Nights" Days: Sandra is the planetary equivalent of this, though with leanings towards a present-day aesthetic with its architecture and technology, with more fantastical elements sprinkled in such as aliens, robots, and towering camel/fish creatures roaming the streets. Most of the crew dresses appropriately with robes, turbans, and (in the girls' case) bedlahs.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: One of the fauna native to Sandra is the Camelish, an oxymoronic beast of burden with the body of a camel and the scales and fins of a fish, and the ability to function in the environments of both.
  • Single-Biome Planet: According to Laguna, virtually all of the planet's surface beyond its single featured city is a Sea of Sand.

Oasis

    Oasis in General
A rebel army that opposes the Nero Empire.
  • Badass Crew: They prove themselves to be this when they team up with the Edens Zero crew in battle against the Empire, holding their own about as well as the heroes can.
  • Badass Normal: As Homura detects, they have tremendously powerful Ether despite not using Ether Gear, making them powerful fighters in their own right.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: They start out on hostile terms towards the Edens Zero crew when they come looking for their help, since the crew is teamed up with the deserter Laguna, but come to trust and respect them when they show how effective they are in fighting the Empire.
  • Hope Bringer: They serve this role to the people of Sandra, who feel they have no reason to fear the Empire as long as Oasis is there to protect them.
  • It's Personal: The whole resistance is filled with people who lost something precious to them thanks to Nero. They do not, however, share the same sentiment towards imperial officials who are Just Following Orders, mainly hating The Empire as a construct and not the general people who make it up.
  • La Résistance: They pose this role against the Nero Empire. According to Laguna, however, they're a bunch of idealists who are all talk and no action, which is the deciding factor for why he left; they don't truly make any headway in their cause until the Edens Zero crew offers a hand.
  • Meaningful Name: They're a source of hope and relief for the people of an arid desert planet, so it's fitting that they're named after an oasis.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Vilified: Downplayed. They use lethal force on their enemies, but they have genuinely noble goals, take no pride in the lives they've taken, and are viewed as heroes by the people of Sandra.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Averted, in a rarity for allies of heroic Mashima characters. The first thing they do when they charge into battle is cap a military sergeant who rounded up a bunch of innocent robots for public execution, and are known to have killed others before. They're also aware that killing doesn't make them any better than the ones who kill them, but they continue to do so as long as the empire willingly threatens the lives and liberties of millions.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Downplayed. They're all mighty ticked at Laguna for deserting them, even if it was to find someone to take down Nero, such that Goodwin marks him as a dead man should they ever catch sight of him. That said, Goodwin was simply asserting his authority, and the worst response the others have to seeing him again is to hold him at gunpoint with no real intent to shoot, showing that none of them are as angry as they let on.

    Goodwin

Goodwin

Voiced by: Kenji Nomura (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_goodwin.png

Oasis's leader, a towering feline alien with an intense hate for Poseidon Nero and his Empire. He's also known online as Oa_NEKO, one of Aoneko Channel's biggest donators on B-Cube.

  • Ascended Fanboy: As a huge fan of Aoneko Channel, he's over the moon to fight side by side with Rebecca and Happy, which plays a big factor in the alliance between Oasis and the Edens Zero crew.
  • BFS: He swings around a broadsword that's about as huge as he is.
  • Blush Stickers: Sports these whenever he talks with Rebecca, his idol.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: He's a big, rugged, powerful Rebel Leader who's also A Father to His Men and shows mercy to his enemies whenever he can help it. He's also an unironic fanboy for Rebecca and Happy, and squees over the sight of them.
  • The Captain: He's in charge of the Maine Coon, a Cool Starship with ears like a cat.
  • Cat Folk: He's a cat-man who looks to be dozens of feet tall.
  • Death Glare: Almost always flashes one when talking to Laguna, whom he doesn't take kindly to for abandoning the cause.
  • A Father to His Men: He leads a Badass Crew of fellows who've bonded over everything they've lost to the Nero Empire's tyranny, and deeply mourns whenever any number of them are killed in action.
  • Gratuitous English: In the Japanese version, he responds with "True" in English when confirming his identity as one of Rebecca's online followers. To Keep It Foreign, the English translation changes it to the Gratuitous French phrase "C'est moi" (That's me).
  • Grin of Audacity: Flashes several of these in his introduction, showing him to be a daring but benevolent rebel.
  • Horseback Heroism: He gets one such moment in the battle on Sandra, only it's on a Camelish (a camel/fish hybrid) instead of a horse.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: When Goodwin is angered by the loss of several Oasis members to Imperial soldiers, one of the soldiers shoots back that their own side had its own share of losses thanks to Oasis. Goodwin plainly admits the soldier is right, but adds that as long as the Empire continues to plague the universe, the bodies will continue to pile up on both sides.
  • I'm Your Biggest Fan: He's this for Rebecca and Happy, being one of Aoneko Channel's biggest donors both financially and literally, and one of the very few in the cosmos to unironically enjoy Aoneko's content, which most others find to be low-effort, poorly edited schlock.
  • Large and in Charge: He towers over every one of his allies, making it clear who calls the shots.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He has the strength and agility to latch onto a low-flying Imperial airship and fling it away.
  • Mood-Swinger: Whenever Rebecca is involved, he goes from a stern, no-nonsense commander to a fanboy who hangs over her every word. Everyone from the Edens Zero crew to his own men can barely process such a shift in character.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: He's both huge and heavily muscled, and with that comes the strength to grab a flying Imperial airship, stop its flight, and throw it away with his bare hands.
  • Nothing Personal: He makes it clear that while he despises Nero, Shura, and everything their Empire stands for, he holds nothing against the actual soldiers in the Imperial army, and offers to make peace with his enemies once the fighting is over.
  • One Degree of Separation: The Edens Zero crew is flabbergasted to know the Rebel Leader they want to ally with on a remote Aoi Cosmos planet is also one of Rebecca's biggest fans.
  • Orphaned Etymology: Not Goodwin himself, but the name of his ship, the Maine Coon, comes from a breed of cat that's itself named after the US state of Maine, which isn't something likely found in any space fantasy universe.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite their alliance with Laguna, a traitor to Oasis, Goodwin lends an ear to the Edens Zero crew in part thanks to Rebecca, whom he's a huge fan of. He shoots down their help at first out of stubborn pride, but quickly reconsiders once Shiki's team demonstrates what a Badass Crew they are in action, and when he learns of their accomplishments against Drakken Joe.
  • Rebel Leader: He inherited this position from Oasis's previous leader and actual founder, and is heavily motivated to stop the Empire, who ravage the Aoi Cosmos with no regard for its people's freedoms.
  • Rugged Scar: He has a huge scar running down his left cheek and another across a blind right eye, giving him the image of a tough and experienced Rebel Leader.
  • Stealing from the Till: Subverted. Ibaraki accuses him of doing this with their war funds when Oasis finds out he's been giving handouts to Rebecca, but Goodwin assures him that he pays with his own money.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: There are two sides to him: a tough and intimidating rebel boss who nonetheless cares deeply for the lives of his soldiers, and a squeeing fanboy who simps for Rebecca.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: He shows a glimmer of sympathy for Nero when public support for the Empire plummets thanks to his "halfwit son", Shura, though Goodwin is quick to add that Nero deserves his fall from grace.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Downplayed. He tells Laguna that he won't take any pleasure working with him after the way he left, but according to Ibaraki, Goodwin is nowhere near as upset to see him as he looks, and is only putting on airs in front of the others.

  • Accent Adaptation: Kodansha changes his Ibaraki accent to a Southern dialect, going by his Verbal Tic "iffen so".
  • Delinquent Hair: He has his hair styled in a '50s pompadour, and combs it when preparing for battle.
  • The Greys: He resembles one with his black eyes and noseless face, albeit with green skin, Pointy Ears and Delinquent Hair.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He's shown to have had a crush on Oasis's princess in a flashback where she was alive, with Ibaraki suggesting he could be her destined love bound by the Red String of Fate, but she pays more attention to Laguna jokingly making the same suggestion than Ibaraki.
  • Hot-Blooded: As a pastiche of a Bōsōzoku, he's also brash, angry, and extremely passionate about Oasis's fight with the Empire.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: He says this after Laguna calls him out for holding him and the crew at gunpoint under Goodwin's orders to shoot him on sight, while also explaining that Goodwin was just putting on airs as their leader.
  • Japanese Delinquents: He's got the traits of a typical Bōsōzoku: a greased pompadour and jersey; a Tohoku dialect with Trrrilling Rrrs; and a Space Fighter that's decked out like a noisy motorcycle, complete with a flag emblazoned with Oasis's name written out in kanji as 尾亜死巣note  (replaced with plain English in Kodansha's translation).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's a rude and crass delinquent, but he's also a heroic rebel who's more forgiving to his enemies than he lets on; this includes Laguna, whom he begins patching things up with after just a day of fighting alongside him.
  • Manly Tears: He's a Hot-Blooded delinquent, but that doesn't stop him from crying at several points, such as when he recounts how Oasis's princess was killed and mutilated beyond recognition, or screaming over the deaths of Dylan, Furena, and Lizarre.
  • Meaningful Name: Ibaraki shares his name with Ibaraki Prefecture, which is fitting considering that a.) he speaks with an Ibaraki dialect, and b.) it's one of the top five prefectures when it comes to Japanese motorcycle gangs, which he acts like a member of.
  • The Noseless: One of his alien features is his distinct lack of a nose, unlike other characters.
  • Toilet Humor: He takes a crack at Shiki and Laguna's combo attack (dropping enemies from the sky and washing them away) by likening it to taking a dump and flushing it down a toilet. The insult flies straight over Shiki's head.
  • Verbal Tic: His is the Ibaraki slang word 'ndaraa, which Kodansha translates as its closest English approximation, "iffen so".

Dylan (right) and Furena (left)

A human couple who fight alongside each other.

  • Back-to-Back Badasses: They're introduced with their backs up against each other while pointing guns at the Edens Zero crew with the rest of Oasis.
  • Battle Couple: They're indicated to be an item when they start flirting in the middle of a war zone. Not to mention how Dylan flips out when Furena dies.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: They engage in some romantic banter while battling imperial forces in the Aoi War.
Furena: It's almost high tide. Normally this would be much more romantic.
Dylan: Reminds me of when we went to see it together.
Furena: This time, I'll watch it while fighting by your side. That's not so bad, either.
  • Character Death: Furena is killed by the Empire's Sea Serpent machine, while Dylan dies avenging her in a Suicide Attack.
  • Eye Scream: Moments before her ship explodes, Furena's right eye is shown evaporating from the heat of the Imperial Sea Serpent's Wave-Motion Gun.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Dylan crashes his ship into the Empire's Sea Serpent to get revenge for Furena's death. This distracts it long enough for Eraser to destroy it before it can kill anyone else, and just in time for the Edens Zero crew to announce the Empire's defeat.
  • Mauve Shirt: Both are mildly fleshed out as a happy and loving couple. They also tragically die at the tail end of the Aoi War.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Dylan has a distinctly pointy nose that sets him apart from the other male characters.
  • Suicide Attack: Dylan is driven to do this on the Imperial Sea Serpent after Furena's death, which succeeds in helping Eraser destroy it.
  • Token Human: Downplayed. They're not the only humans in Oasis, or the most prominent ones there for that matter, but they take this role among the minor members of the army.

    Russo

Russo

Voiced by: Farahnaz Nikray (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_russo.png

An aggressive midget in a bunny outfit.

  • Ambiguously Human: Given his small size, masked face, cartoonishly angry eyes and bunny outfit, it's hard to tell whether he's an alien or just a very short human.
  • The Fake Cutie: He looks like a tiny little baby in a onesie with bunny ears, but he's a hardened soldier just like the rest of Oasis.
  • Hot-Blooded: Along with Ibaraki, he's always angry-looking and eager to fight.
  • Manly Tears: Hot-blooded as he is, he can't stop himself from crying when Lizarre, Furena, and Dylan are killed.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: He plays the wise guy to Lizarre, whom he's usually paired together with, seen when Lizarre scolds him for having too much fun in the Aoi War.
  • Verbal Tic: His sentences end with "yo!" in English and "da zei" (a slang inflection of "da ze") in Japanese.

    Lizarre

    Gomakichi

Gomakichi

Voiced by: Tomohiro Ōno (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_gomakichi.png

An android rebel.

  • Bald Head of Toughness: His baldness makes him stick out when Shiki and Homura sense Oasis's higher-than-average battle power.
  • The Generic Guy: He has no discernible character traits apart from being a Token Robot.
  • Ironic Name: The "kichi" in his name is written in kanji meaning "good luck". He's the one who ends up Tempting Fate before his teammates get killed.
  • Tempting Fate: He's the first to bring up the possibility that Oasis might beat the Nero Empire. Immediately after this, Lizarre and Furena get killed by the Empire's Sea Serpent, which also leads to Dylan's Suicide Attack.
  • Token Robot: Downplayed. He's not the only android in Oasis, but he takes this role among the named members of the army.

    Zoy

Zoy

Voiced by: Takuya Nakashima (Japanese)

One of the minor members of Oasis.

  • Harbinger of Impending Doom: He warns the rest of Oasis of an Imperial attack in the marketplace, just to accidentally lead some soldiers to them and get himself shot for his trouble.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He unwittingly lures an Imperial squadron straight to Oasis's hideout while trying to alert his comrades to them.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He's shot down in the same scene he's introduced, and while he's only hit in the shoulder and is likely to have survived given treatment, he's never spoken of again.

Past Members

    Laguna Husert

Laguna Husert

One of Drakken Joe's Element 4, originally an Oasis member who went AWOL to recruit powerful warriors that could stand against Nero and Shura on their own. After Drakken (his intended candidate) is taken down by the crew of Edens Zero, Laguna helps foster an alliance between the crew and Oasis.

See EDENS ZERO: Crew of Edens Zero for more information.

    The "Princess" (Unmarked Spoilers)

Ijuna

The daughter of Oasis's original leader. It was believed she was murdered by Prince Shura on a mission to rescue her comrades, but she was in fact captured and tortured by him, becoming his secretary and right-hand woman.

Miscellaneous

    Rickard

Rickard

Voiced by: Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_rickard.png

The CEO of Dead Cam, the Aoi Cosmos's largest android manufacturer.

  • Defector from Decadence: He turns against the Empire after Shura wages war against all robots in Aoi, mainly because it paints his company in a bad light.
  • Hidden Depths: He proves to be a skillful negotiator for a malcontent CEO, as he manages to alleviate tensions between humans and machines on Foresta weeks after the planet's deadly machine uprising, according to Xiaomei.
  • Honest Corporate Executive: Downplayed. His reasons for opposing the Empire are purely pragmatic, but he genuinely opposes their despotic treatment of machines, and he helps rebuild peaceful relations between humans and robots after the events surrounding the war.
  • Pragmatic Hero: He helps the Interstellar Union Army end the Empire's war on robots not because he believes Androids Are People, Too, but because he wants to avoid a PR disaster for his company.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Not Rickard himself, but his company, Dead Cam, which is spelled "Dettcom" before its proper translation appears in the manga.

    Harold

Harold

Laguna's best friend and acting buddy, who died when the Nero Empire invaded their home planet.

  • Death by Origin Story: His death kicked off Laguna's path for revenge against Poseidon Nero, eventually leading him to join Drakken Joe. It also led Laguna to discover his inability to cry naturally, despite his devastation over Harold's death.
  • Posthumous Character: He was killed in a raid conducted by the Nero Empire.
  • Real After All: Laguna first mentions having a Tragic Bromance in the Belial Gore arc, claiming that he and his friend competed to become the greatest swordsman before his friend died of a disease, but Homura immediately catches on that he's just trying to trick her into crying with a made-up sob story. When he tells Weisz his real past, it turns out his friend and the basic outline of the story were real; he just changed the details to line up with his and Homura's sword duel and get a stronger reaction from her.
  • Tragic Bromance: He and Laguna were Heterosexual Life-Partners who strove to become the greatest actors in the cosmos. Then the Empire took over their planet, and Harold was tragically killed, which led Laguna to quit the acting business in despair when he realized he couldn't properly mourn for his friend without micro-managing himself like his grief was a crying scene in a play.

    Urfa Husert

Urfa Husert

Laguna's mother.

  • People Jars: Urfa is one of the many dead human mothers assembled by Ziggy on Lendard to extract their Ether and locate Mother herself.
  • Posthumous Character: She's been dead for some time, though when and how she died is unknown.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Laguna bears a striking resemblance to her.

Kaede Cosmosnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_kaede_cosmos.png

The Kaede Cosmos is the third cosmos visited by the Edens Zero crew, representing the season of Autumn. The space in this cosmos is checkered in black and red squares.

A tropical planet that's home to the popular vacation resort called Ryuzetsu Land.

    In General

Lendard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/66088051_44e6_45cb_8a85_8bdd7689977c.png

An industrial world known as the Perpetual Motion Machine Planet. It was shut down years ago, but has recently been taken over by Ziggy, who uses its factories to build his vast Skeleton Army. This planet serves as the site of the Kaede War, where the Edens Zero crew and their allies wage their intended final showdown against the Demon King's forces.

    In General
  • Dark Secret: The government of Lendard harbored an undying obsession with weapons development, which threatened to doom the entire Kaede Cosmos, and exposing that conspiracy caused the nation to erupt into war.
  • Eternal Engine: The entire planet is essentially a giant weapons factory.
  • Robotic Assembly Lines: The factories constantly churn out Skeleton Army bots by the thousands.

King and Queen of Lendard (Heavy Spoilers

King and Queen Shaya Le Lendard

The rulers of Lendard, and Elsie Crimson's parents.

  • Bait the Dog: Elsie's mourning of her parents' unintended deaths, coupled with her flashback to them smiling kindly for such corrupt rulers, seem to show that they still loved their daughter. That all comes to naught when Shaya—reborn as Acnoella—gloats that she has no love for Elsie whatsoever, a sentiment Elsie shares.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: They both seemed like The Good King and The High Queen, but were in fact would-be Galactic Conquerors obsessed with human supremacy.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: Shaya is an Expy of Irene Belserion, but unlike Irene, a High Queen who was Driven to Madness into attacking her daughter before redeeming herself, Shaya was thoroughly evil and had no love for her own daughter from the beginning.
  • Evil Overlord: The king, like Shaya, was a thoroughly corrupt king who secretly plotted to take over other planets in the Kaede Cosmos through military force.
  • Expy: Shaya is one for Irene Belserion from Fairy Tail: she's the mother of Elsie Crimson, Expy of Irene's daughter; they're both queen of nations that fell to ruin in the past; and they are both "mothers" to dragons (or in Irene's case, Dragon Slayers).
  • Galactic Conqueror: They had plans to conquer the entire Kaede Cosmos through their weapons development, which were thwarted thanks to Elsie.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Shaya was a power-hungry warmonger whose plans for cosmic conquest forced her daughter to take drastic action .
  • No Full Name Given: The king's first name is unknown, though his last name is presumably "Le Lendard" like his wife and daughter.
  • Posthumous Character: They both died in the civil war Elsie incited to stop them. Subverted with the queen, however, who survived and became God Acnoella.
  • Reused Character Design: The queen has the same design as Irene Belserion, Erza Scarlet's mother in Fairy Tail. Averted with the king, who looks completely different from Erza's father, General Rung.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: The mother is revealed to have become God Acnoella.

Sweeds

One of the many unfortunate planets targeted by Ziggy during his conquest of the universe.

    In General
  • City of Canals: The planet appears to take after Venice, having similar architecture and canals across the city.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: This is the 17th planet that Ziggy visits to spread his virus, making the androids on the planet go berserk.
  • Weird Weather: The clouds have waterfalls flowing from one side near the top.

Yukino Cosmosnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_yukino_cosmos.png

The Yukino Cosmos is the last of the four cosmoses adventurers must visit on their voyage to Mother. The space here is pure white from flurries of snow, perfectly suiting its representation of Winter.

Miltz

The home of the Church of Saintfire and its Archbishop, Saintfire Nox.

    In General
  • Recurring Element: The name Miltz belongs to the town elder of Mildian from Rave Master, referencing the Church of Saintfire's jurisdiction over time just like that series' version of Mildian.

Swan

The homeworld of Holy, one of the Interstellar Union Army's top officers. Swan was attacked by Deadend Crow in the year X482, leading to one of the deadliest terrorist acts in cosmic history known as the "Bloody Atmos Day" incident.

    Sara

Sara

Holy's little sister, and a victim of Bloody Atmos Day.

  • Death of a Child: She was only eight years old, but that didn't spare her from getting crushed by falling rubble in front of her big sister.
  • Posthumous Character: She's one out of over one million victims of the Bloody Atmos Day incident, and the one that set Holy on her path to vengeance.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: According to her sister, she was a good kid who aspired to become a champion of justice when she grew up.

Unaffiliated Planets

Mildian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_mildian_anime.png
Click here to see Mildian's manga design

The Planet of Time, which exists in its own timespace separate from the rest of the universe, making it appear to be frozen in time from the outside. It is home to the legendary fortune-teller Xiaomei, the only person living there apart from adorable little critters called Picoratta. The planet is also constantly on the move, never staying in one cosmos.

    In General
  • Baby Planet: The planet is fairly tiny, with its curvature visible from the ground, and enough so that the crew supposes that the first building they see on the planet might also be the only one.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The interior of the Temple of Knowledge is featured during Xiaomei's first scene in Chapter 5, but isn't identified as such until Chapter 44.
  • Eldritch Location: The Temple of Knowledge. On the outside, it looks like any stock Chinese temple, but inside is an endless expanse of stars with a floor of water that visitors can sink straight through at Xiaomei's will, leading the seiling of a battle coliseum that they can only exit through Xiaomei's power...by sinking through the floor again and being dropped back into the room above.
  • Land of Dragons: Mildian's landscape is a mish-mash of Chinese and Buddhist iconography.
  • Recurring Element: This is the third series by Hiro Mashima to use the name "Mildian" for a location linked to time in some way. In Rave Master, it was a town of mages dedicated to protecting time, while in Fairy Tail, it is a dead civilization that created time-related spells such as Ultear's Arc of Time and Last Ages, and worshiped a god of time called Chronos.
  • Time Stands Still: Subverted. The crew initially assumes this to be the case when they hear that time doesn't move on the planet, but discover that everything moves normally. In reality, it's a Year Inside, Hour Outside.
  • Traveling Land Mass: The entire planet is one and can randomly appear in any cosmos at any given moment.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: Time does not move for the rest of the universe on the surface of the planet, giving outsiders the impression that it's the planet where time doesn't move. Thus, visitors could spend years on the planet and return the exact moment when they came.

    Picoratta

Picoratta

The natives of Mildian. They love watching battles as much as their planet's ruler, Xiaomei.
