The Planet of Gemstones, where every kind of metal and mineral in the cosmos can be found in plenty. It's known for its huge social divide where the rich live luxuriously in gilded cities layered over the planet's surface, while the poor slave away in the labor district directly underneath to mine for the wealthy.

    Madame Kurenai

Madame Kurenai (Kurenai Kōgetsu)

Voiced by: Mie Sonozaki (Japanese), Michelle Ruff (English) Foreign VAs

The highest authority and overseer of Sun Jewel, as well as Homura's mother. Once enslaved at the planet's labor district after abandoning her daughter and falling into insurmountable debt at the casinos, she rose to power by taking advantage of Valkyrie's kindness to start anew. She is willing to use every resource and weapon at her disposal in the name of filling her bottomless wallet.

  • Arc Villainess: She is the main antagonist of the Sun Jewel arc, being the one in charge of the planet and everything that goes wrong there, including why Valkyrie left Homura in the first place, and why Valkyrie is dead.
  • The Baroness: She's the Sexpot variety, an Absurdly Youthful Mother with Eastern stylings who sadistically kills and tortures others for slighting her or challenging her authority, at one point burning a man's face and walking him naked on a leash for touching her without permission. For bonus points, she's also a Planet Baron.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Kurenai is a variant who only acts kind and humble to take advantage of others when not in a position of power over them, and then makes no effort to hide her true colors once she is. She first did this when Valkyrie came to reunite her with Homura, fooling Valkyrie with her act as a mother desperate to see her child when she simply wanted to acquire more wealth and power. She's much less successful when she tries the same act on Homura, pretending to be a loving mother when left at her daugther's mercy, and then gloating when Homura releases her into exile.
  • Black Widow: How she rose to power in the first place: she legally married the original ruler, Baron Mordo, and then killed him to take his place.
  • The Caligula: A total madwoman who is also the most influential person on the planet, inflicting grevious harm on workers and criminals to satisfy her own twisted desires for wealth and human suffering.
  • Color Motif: Hers is the color red. Her name is the Japanese word for "crimson", she wears a red kimono, controls a scarlet-colored Kill Sat and Humongous Mecha, and has an obsession with either turning people into deep red stains or burning their flesh to match.
  • Collared by Fashion: Wears a fanciful collar with a decorative butterfly on the center.
  • Crocodile Tears: She is fond of using this trick to convince others she's not as bad as she seems, leading Valkyrie to fall for Kurenai's promise to return to her family when she had no intention of doing so. When she tries this in front of Homura to get her sympathy, she isn't nearly as convinced.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The extreme laws on Sun Jewel are reflected perfectly through Kurenai herself, who disfigures an interviewee simply for touching her face without permission, and decides to completely wipe out the entire labor district—her primary source of income—when it ceases to be lucrative on account of her prisoners working themselves to exhaustion.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Child: In an attempt to gain leniency from Homura, Kurenai lies through her teeth that she never stopped thinking about her for a moment. When Homura shows her the gift Kurenai gave her years ago in the one act of motherly love she ever gave her daughter, however, Kurenai fails to recognize it. It's at this moment that Homura realizes she means nothing to her mother, and decides to share that sentiment with her.
  • Dragon Lady: Kurenai is a beautiful but sadistic villainess who has a Japanese name, wears a kimono, and is defined by her cruelty.
  • Dub Name Change: Zig-Zagged. Her moniker in Japanese is Kurenai Fujin, which translates to "Crimson Lady". In English, her name is only partly changed to "Madame Kurenai".
  • Evil Gloating: She continues to gloat over tricking Valkyrie years after the fact, especially since Valkyrie sacrificed her own freedom under the impression that Kurenai would reunite with her daughter, Homura, as if Kurenai actually cared about her.
  • Evil Matriarch: On top of being an evil slave driver who rejoices in inflicting pain to others for little to no reason, she also turns out to be the mother of Homura, one of the main heroes of the series.
  • Evil Overlord: She's the tyrannical ruler of the casino planet Sun Jewel. She makes the citizens worship her like a goddess and sends the people who engage in violence, including in self-defense, to the labor district so they mine valuable ore for her. When her slaves start a rebellion against her, her answer is to Nuke 'em with her Kill Sat.
  • Excessive Evil Eyeshadow: Her anime design has prominent purple eyeshadow because Makeup Is Evil.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: She is the viper to Valkyrie's farmer. Upon finding Kurenai practically drowning in debt, Valkyrie decided to take her place in the labor district so she could escape the planet undetected and finally return to her daughter. Rather than take up that offer, Kurenai crawled to the top of Sun Jewel's hierarchy to become the then-current baron's wife, assassinated him to take his place, and unleashed a swarm of deadly Stones onto the labor district for the workers to slay and make herself even richer, resulting in Valkyrie sacrificing herself to save the workers.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Following her battle with Shiki, she's beaten and captured by a gang of thugs—led by someone whose life she personally and gleefully ruined by disfiguring his face, no less—to be turned into a Human Pet at best and a Sex Slave at worst. After the three-year Time Skip, it's confirmed she died after a year.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: From a Sex Slave who grew up in poverty to the ruthless and terrifying ruler of Sun Jewel.
  • The Gambling Addict: When she first came to Sun Jewel with dreams of striking it rich, she wound up amassing a debt of over 44 million metals at the casinos. If that weren't enough, she never truly learns from this lesson when Valkyrie gave her an easy escape, as she tries to swindle Drakken Joe out of all of his money over the Edens Zero.
  • Given Name Reveal: "Madame Kurenai" is just a thin alias. Her true name is Kurenai Kōgetsu; hearing it for the first time is what leads to Homura's realization that Madame Kurenai is her mother.
  • A God Am I: She has a severe enough god complex to call the planet's satellite-induced executions a form of "divine retribution", and has an army of Mecha-Mooks designed in the style of angelic soldiers.
  • Greed: Her defining characteristic. As far as she's concerned, it doesn't matter who dies or what gets destroyed as long as she makes a profit in the process.
  • Hate Sink: She's a sadistic woman who takes pleasure in punishing people as she does to a poor model whom she had summoned for an interview just because he touched her without permission. Moreover, she abandoned her daughter for money without a second thought, and she betrayed Valkyrie to her death to free herself from slavery, all while gloating about it well into the present day.
  • Hates Being Touched: More accurately, she hates being touched without consent. The man who mistakes her for a High-Class Call Girl learns this the hard way when she burns his face in return.
  • Human Resources: Ziggy harvests her and countless other dead human mothers for their Ether, which is intrinsically linked to Mother for their ability to create life, thus allowing him to pinpoint Mother's location.
  • Insistent Terminology: She doesn't simply pass "judgment" on criminals when vaporizing them with her Kill Sat; in her lingo, it's "divine retribution".
  • It's All About Me: She cares for no one but herself, and she uses any charity she's given to further own aims. This includes her family, as she more than willingly abandoned Homura at a young age with no intention of going back for her.
  • Killed Offscreen: After the three-year Time Skip, Ziggy confirms that Kurenai died from her mistreatment at the hands of Cedric's gang.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: She dresses as a traditional Japanese noblewoman. This makes sense as she came from Oedo, same as Homura.
  • Lack of Empathy: She freely rampages through the rich sector of Sun Jewel in her Humongous Mecha, cackling about how much fun she's having rather than paying any mind to any civilians fleeing for dear life.
  • Lady of War: She gives off the aura of a Yamato Nadeshiko, but wears powered gauntlets prepped to defend herself or inflict torture on unsuspecting victims at any moment, and openly faces Shiki in combat when he threatens to beat the crap out of her.
  • Magical Floating Shawl: Kurenai wears a white silk shawl that floats around her in the shape of a heart. Given that she has a god complex and her home planet looks like feudal Japan, it's likely that she deliberately wears it to resemble a Japanese deity.
  • Mask of Sanity: Under normal circumstances, she gives off the impression of a perfectly composed Yamato Nadeshiko. Beneath that mask, however, is a cruel and greedy woman with sadomasochistic tendencies and a severe god complex.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kurenai" is Japanese for "crimson", and she has a certain fondness of turning people that color, whether it's vaporizing them and leaving a deep red stain on the floor, or just straight-up burning their flesh.
  • Never My Fault: She's completely detached to the suffering of those she sends to the labor district, declaring she's done absolutely nothing to earn their hatred.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: She's extremely opportunistic when it comes to getting her hands on something another villain wants. Case in point, when Drakken Joe offers a modest cut of 30% of the profits for her help finding the Edens Zero with her Kill Sat, she accepts the deal with the full intent of double-crossing him, saying she never accepts less than 100%. Unfortunately for her, Drakken proves to have anticipated this and just steals the satellite outright.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: In her own words, Valkyrie didn't "save" her from the labor district; Kurenai simply saw an opportunity to escape and allowed her to be useful.
  • Parental Neglect: She abandoned her family to strike it rich, leaving her only child to believe she left to provide money for them.
  • Planet Baron: She controls the entire planet of Sun Jewel, which she took over by clawing up the social ladder and marrying/killing the old baron.
  • Power Fist: She wears a gauntlet on her hand that can emit enough power to scar a person's face and perform a Punch Catch on a furious Shiki, who'd otherwise send her flying.
  • Rags to Riches: She came from a poor village and wound up in huge debt to Sun Jewel's original ruler, Baron Mordo, leading her to be treated as little more than a slave. Within two years, however, she took advantage of Valkyrie's kindness to break free, weaseling up her way up to become the Baron's wife and killing him, becoming the undisputed richest and most influential person on the planet.
  • Real Name as an Alias: Her actual given name is "Kurenai", which means "crimson". This is somewhat Lost in Translation, as the alias "Madame Kurenai" is Kurenai Fujin in Japanese, meaning "Crimson Lady". Thus, when Homura hears her alias, it holds no significant meaning to her until she learns it's actually her mother.
  • Red Baron: In Japanese, she is known on Sun Jewel as Kurenai Fujin (紅婦人), which means "Crimson Lady".
  • Rich Bitch: She ruins the lives of people on the planet who defy her by forcing them to spend their lives mining valuable ore for her.
  • Sadist: It doesn't get any more evident than when she gleefully disfigures a model's face because he touched her without her consent. His pleas for her not to do it because he makes a living off of his face only make her want to do it more.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Mocks Shiki for being one of many "brats" that sully the universe with "delusions" like Androids Are People, Too. Shiki fires back that he doesn't see an adult like her making life any better for others.
  • Spared, but Not Forgiven: When called to determine Kurenai's fate, Homura doesn't feel enough emotional attachment to her mother to hate her or forgive her for the evil she's committed, and thus lets her walk away under the condition that Kurenai must never set foot in her life again. Kurenai mistakes this for weakness or mercy as she flees before she finds herself confronted by those that do have grounds to seek revenge on her.
  • The Usurper: She married the former Planet Baron of Sun Jewel and then murdered him to take control of the planet.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: The people of the rich sector revere her as a divine being, but she's nothing more than a sadistic woman who takes pleasure in punishing people for petty crimes.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Once her fate is left entirely in Homura's hands, Kurenai puts on the act of a loving mother in order to persuade her daughter to spare her, not long after gloating to Shiki about how Homura means nothing to her. When Homura sees right through her lies and appears poised to kill her, Kurenai looks as if she's about to crap her kimono as she desperately pleads for her life. When Homura instead lets her go, Kurenai goes back to cackling over how stupid her daughter is, only to veer straight back into helpless pleading when she runs into Cedric, who has his own bone to pick with her and is nowhere near as compassionate as Homura.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Her high and mighty attitude gradually crumbles after Shiki comes crashing through her window to drag her back to Homura. First, she loses her cool when Drakken Joe makes off with her Kill Sat, leaving her unable to carry out her Evil Plan as easily as she wants. Then, she grows increasingly frustrated by Shiki's stubborn refusal to die when she's fighting him in her Knight Gear. Once Shiki totals her mech, she becomes a panicked, quivering wreck who tries whatever she can to weasel her way out of punishment. This blows up in her face, and she's last seen screaming in terror as she's left at the mercy of a man who is all too happy to take revenge against her for ruining his life.

Kurenai Dragoon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kurenai_dragoon_1.png

Madame Kurenai's personal Knight Gear and secret weapon.

  • Acrofatic: It looks extremely bulky and stout for a Humongous Mecha, yet it's also extremely agile and nimble, and quite capable of keeping up with Shiki until he disables its thrusters.
  • Anti-Magic: The Kurenai Dragoon has an Ether coating that nullifies all Ether-based effects, making it impossible for Shiki to change its weight, and making his Gravity Fist about as effective as any normal punch on metal. Shiki only manages to make a dent in the armor by shutting off his Ether Gear the moment his Gravity Fist connects, busting up his hand in the process.
  • Dub Name Change: Zig-Zagged like Madame Kurenai itself. Its name in Japanese is Kurenai Tekki, which translates to "Crimson Iron Horseman" (an accurate definition of a dragoon), yet Kodansha leaves the "Kurenai" part untouched.
  • Eye Beams: It can fire lasers from its eyes, and they have the added effect of creating delayed explosions around any area they touch.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Double Subverted. When Shiki tries using her own Homing Projectile against her, Madame Kurenai gloats that her Knight Gear is sturdy enough to withstand its own attacks, showing that there was some foresight put into avoiding this situation. Instead, Shiki converts the missile's kinetic energy into gravity powerful enough to completely crush the mech.
  • Humongous Mecha: It's a Knight Gear, which is this by default. It's significantly larger and bulkier than Sibir's Knight Gear, and sturdy enough to withstand Shiki's Ether Gear without a scratch thanks to its Ether coating.
  • Roboteching: Its Queen Nova missile sharply changes trajectory to follow Shiki around no matter what direction he flies in.
  • Secret Weapon: It's Madame Kurenai's most powerful weapon after Satellite Blaze, though its existence isn't revealed until after Drakken Joe takes the satellite for himself.
  • Super-Persistent Missile: The Queen Nova, a homing missile that follows its target and will never stop until it connects. Not even buildings are able to slow it down when Shiki tries luring it into a wall.

    Mordo

Baron Mordo

The baron who ruled Sun Jewel before Madame Kurenai, who married and assassinated him to take his place.

  • Asshole Victim: As an affluent and lecherous baron who profited off the labor of the poor, he doesn't have any mourners.
  • The Ghost: He's never shown on-screen, and there's no mental picture of what he looked like.
  • Posthumous Character: He's been dead for three to five years since Kurenai killed him.
  • Predecessor Villain: He's the man who maintained the system of corruption on Sun Jewel that gave rise to Madame Kurenai, who killed him and took over.
  • Shout-Out: Taking his title into account, his full name, Baron Mordo, seems to be one for the Doctor Strange villain of the same name.

    Ward

Ward

Voiced by: Sōma Shiomi (Japanese), Kane Jungbluth-Murry (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ward.png

Madame Kurenai's personal attendant.

  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: His response to seeing Kurenai burn the face of a man applying for a job interview is to wearily shake his head and remind her that was the last one.
  • Number Two: He reports directly to Madame Kurenai and operates her Oculus Kurenai, but doesn't do any hands-on work like the Zaiten Three.

Zaiten Three

    In General
Madame Kurenai's triad of personal enforcers.
  • Dub Name Change: Downplayed. The team's Japanese name is Sanzaiten, which roughly means "Three Sin Devas"; Kodansha translates the "Three" part, but leaves the "Zaiten" unchanged. This is unusual compared to its members' titles, where Kodansha uses both their Japanese and the English approximation "X of Heaven".
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between:
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: They have their share of quirks, but they pose a big enough challenge that Shiki can't take them out as easily as previous enemies.
  • Red Baron: Each of the three has his own personal title reflecting his weapon or fighting style: Benzaiten Garrot, the Scourge of Heaven; Kenzaiten Nino, the Fist of Heaven; and Fuzaiten Baku, the Ax of Heaven.

    Garrot

"Benzaiten" Garrot

Voiced by: Takayuki Nakatsukasa (Japanese), Matthew David Rudd (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_garrot_anime_5.png

The labor district's morally bankrupt warden, otherwise known as the "Scourge of Heaven". He's armed with a paralyzing whip that can move wherever he wants.

  • Bullying a Dragon: Despite knowing how dangerous Ether Gear users can be, he actively torments Homura with his brutal displays of disrespect towards Valkyrie while she's paralyzed. When Homura retaliates with her Odin Strike, however, he has the skill to carve his way through it and hogtie her. Unfortunately, he fails to anticipate Valkyrie's sword that Homura knocked into the air until it's too late.
  • Cool Mask: He wears thin metal braces on the upper half of his face.
  • Death by Looking Up: An ambiguously fatal example. By the time he realizes that Homura's attack knocked Valkyrie's sword into the sky directly above him, he just barely has time to look up and see the blade bearing down on him before it plunges straight into his chest. He's barely alive afterwards, but unable to move.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He is irritable to a fault, which leads him to take his frustrations out on his prisoners.
  • Hate Sink: He proves to be one of the series' most despicable characters through his sickening disrespect of Valkyrie, which he shows by licking the face of her remains and decapitating her in front of a helpless Homura.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Homura subjects him to this fate with Valkyrie's sword, which pierces straight through his chest after she hurls it high into the sky with her own swords.
  • Jerkass: Compared to Nino, a bona fide Nice Guy and Punch-Clock Villain, and Baku, who is Affably Evil and capable of Villainous Friendship, Garrot is the most cruel, sadistic, and depraved of his team.
  • Kick the Dog: He's introduced kicking a miner who had gotten sick working and needed to rest. Likewise, he repeatedly whips Homura after numbing her legs, showing no interest in Shiki because he's more interested in hurting women. Worst of all, he forces Homura to watch while he licks the dead Valkyrie's face and whips her head so hard that it pops off.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He fetishizes Valkyrie's remains on a regular basis, so he fittingly gets his comeuppance when Homura gets him Impaled with Extreme Prejudice via Valkyrie's sword.
  • Lecherous Licking: He licks his lips when calling Valkyrie a "fine woman". This takes on a much more depraved light when it's revealed Valkyrie is dead, and he licks her partially decayed face in front of an utterly disgusted Homura.
  • Made of Iron: Despite his rather scrawny appearance, he rebounds very quickly after Shiki gives him a face-full of Gravity Fist and "drops" him headfirst from the floor to the ceiling. He does, however, nurse his bruise and complain about how much it hurts after the fact.
  • Oh, Crap!: He barely has time to react with shock and horror at the sword Homura skewers him with from above.
  • The Paralyzer: His whip is filled with paralyzing agents that numb whatever part of its victims' bodies it touches. These paralyzants also come with a delayed effect, which Homura discovers when she comes out of her Heroic BSoD and finds she can't move.
  • Punny Name:
    • His name is meant to be read like "Garret", but it's written as the alternative spelling of "garrote", a rope used to strangle people.
    • The nickname "Benzaiten" is shared with a Buddhist deity, but it's written in a way that means "Scourge of Heaven", or more accurately, "Whip Sin Deva".
  • Robosexuals Are Creeps: In no way is his attraction towards Valkyrie portrayed in a respectful light. Doubly so when it's revealed that he gets off on her remains.
  • Sadist: He claims to get off on harming others, beautiful women in particular, and can barely contain his excitement towards "breaking" Homura when he finds out she's Madame Kurenai's daughter.
  • Tattooed Crook: He's a morally bankrupt prison warden with tattoos on his arms and face.
  • The Team Normal: Garrot's the only member of the Zaiten Three to have no superhuman abilities, whether it's Nino's Ether Gear or Baku's inherent physical superiority to humans. However, his whip is so versatile and effective that he holds his own just as well as any Ether Gear user.
  • Uncertain Doom: He's last seen quivering and gasping on the ground after getting stabbed through the chest, with no mention of whether or not he survived afterward.
  • Wardens Are Evil: He is in charge of the labor district where "criminals" are sent, usually for minor crimes or self-defense, and mercilessly punishes them all when just one of them stands out of line or fails to keep up the pace. This doesn't sit well with his comrades, who frown upon him wasting Madame Kurenai's property.
  • Xanatos Gambit: He pulls one when he sends Shiki and Homura to the nest of the dangerous Black Rock. If they die, he gets his revenge, but if they're able to kill the as-of-then undefeated monster (which they do), it would result in a huge payload of metal for Madame Kurenai, making it his win no matter what the outcome.

    Nino

"Kenzaiten" Nino

Voiced by: Hiroki Gotō (Japanese), Doug Erholtz (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_nino_anime.png

A famous B-Cuber who covers anime and otaku-related news. He moonlights as the "Fist of Heaven", who uses a form of Ether Gear called Soul Arm to create giant fists of solid Ether.

  • Accent Adaptation: The English anime dub gives Nino a German accent, which perfectly suits his character origins as a real-world German YouTuber.
  • Adam Westing: For the German dub, Nino is voiced by the real-life Nino "Ninotaku" Kerl himself.
  • Affably Evil: For someone who works for Madame Kurenai, he's every bit of a Nice Guy as he appears to be on his B-Cube channel, and ends up being genuinely helpful to Rebecca. However, he's still willing to follow orders that would result in the deaths of countless people, if only very reluctantly.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: He's known as the "Fist of Heaven" for this very reason, assisted by his floating Ether arms.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's a quirky Otaku who lives and breathes everything related to anime, which includes proudly singing and dancing to the theme song of a children's anime in public. He's also a powerful Ether Gear user and one of Madame Kurenai's top three most dangerous enforcers who triggers Rebecca's transformation into an Empowered Badass Normal for her to survive their fight.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Anime will save the universe." In a bit of irony, he says that when it comes to one of his favorite anime, he actually prefers the manga version.
  • Deer in the Headlights: Rebecca defeats him by appealing to him through their shared love of Wibble Wobble Ruby Bobble, which leaves him mesmerized as he has an Imagine Spot of her wearing her Ruby Cosplay.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: When he confronts Rebecca in the armory, he tries to persuade her to surrender and let him lock the armory to keep the rebels from rioting, and unleashes his Ether Gear only when left with no choice.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He's the only one of any of Kurenai's men to speak out against her decision to destroy the labor district, both because of the thousands of lives that would be lost, and because it'd be terribly disrespectful to Valkyrie, the one who helped her escape. However, he doesn't bat an eye at Kurenai keeping a Human Pet.
  • Famed In-Story: Like most other B-Cubers in the series, Nino is very popular in the online circle, and is personally known by Labilia, who boasts being known by everyone in the cosmos.
  • Forced into Evil: It's implied during his fight with Rebecca that he's been brainwashed to follow Kurenai's bidding, and is aware of this to some degree. However, while he never outright defies his orders, he is still reluctant to carry them out, and he has enough free will to help people, or at the very least avoid doing harm to them, within those boundaries.
  • Friendly Enemy: He decides to help Rebecca out instead of arresting her as ordered after being taken by her Magical Girl cosplay, but still has no intentions of outright betraying his boss. Unfortunately, when they meet again while he's locking up the armory where Rebecca is on a supply run for La Résistance, they hit an impasse that forces him to them to put their friendship aside to fight. However, despite nearly killing Rebecca (implied to be against his will), they still remain on friendly terms.
  • Giant Hands of Doom: His Ether Gear creates up to four giant, disembodied arms made of solid Ether, and function as both weapons and shields.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After getting knocked out by Rebecca, and being implied to be freed from some kind of brainwashing, Nino immediately switches sides by shutting down Kurenai's army of Mecha-Mooks.
  • Immune to Bullets: His Ether arms can block Ether bullets without a scratch.
  • Just Following Orders: Although he knows working for Kurenai means doing terrible things to people, and can barely buy into his own excuse that they're "criminals" as much as the heroes can, he justifies himself this way because he knows he can't defy his boss without incurring her wrath.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: His Ether Gear manifests multiple muscular arms that improve his physical ability.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: He is openly hesitant when Kurenai gives the order to suppress the revolt, but eventually complies, unwillingly, when she repeats the order.
  • Nice Guy: He's a personable dude who loves anime, and lends Rebecca a helping hand because of her cosplay as an anime character. He's also the only one in the audience who is completely unamused when Labilia publically humiliates Rebecca, and not simply because Rebecca's cosplay was ruined in the process.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: His name and appearance are modeled after real-life German YouTuber Nino Kerl, also known by his username "Ninotaku".
  • Otaku: Nino is a major anime buff who takes every piece of the medium very seriously, including shows aimed at children.
  • Pointy Ears: His pointy ears allude to him being one of the villains, albeit only as a Punch-Clock Villain.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: When not carrying out his duties as a member of the Zaiten Three, he's a friendly and approachable B-Cuber who will gladly bend the rules to anyone who shares his interests. He proves to be such a genuinely Nice Guy off duty, in fact, that Rebecca and her friends can't picture him as an enemy.
  • Serious Business: He genuinely believes anime can save the universe, to the point where he covertly defies his orders to take Rebecca in because he was so captivated by her Cosplay of a children's anime character.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: He looks like nothing more than the sort of middle-aged otaku who's a dime a dozen at anime conventions. There's basically no way to know from looking at him that he's an infamous and deadly enforcer for a planetary crimelord.
  • Token Good Teammate: Undergoes a Decon-Recon Switch. Nino is the one person on Madame Kurenai's side who is genuinely good, demonstrated when he actively helps Rebecca under orders to capture her, tries to dissuade Kurenai from wiping out the labor district, and doesn't lift a finger against Shiki while his comrades are fighting to defend their boss. However, he still has no intentions to defy Madame Kurenai, and ends up having to fight Rebecca when he's stuck without an excuse to avoid violence. In the end, though, Rebecca still manages to knock enough sense into him to trigger a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He resolves to battle Rebecca—whom he'd already befriended by this point—when they become stuck at an impasse, and is all but stated to have nearly killed her before she awakens her Ether Gear to fight back.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: During his fight with Rebecca, she reaches out by saying she knows he's a good person deep down, and encourages him to start saving the universe by helping save the people of Sun Jewel.

    Baku

"Fuzaiten" Baku

Voiced by: Yūji Murai (Japanese), Kellen Goff (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_baku_anime.png

The "Ax of Heaven", an axe-wielding lion alien who boasts incredible speed.

  • Affably Evil: He gets very zealous when inflicting "divine punishment" on Madame Kurenai's foes, but he's otherwise fairly laid-back and considerate towards his teammates.
  • Beast Man: He's a giant alien with huge tusks and a face that vaguely looks like a lion.
  • The Brute: Contrasting the other officers under Kurenai, he's the biggest, largest and meanest-looking, reflected by his weapon of choice, an ax.
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: He's the biggest and most direct fighter on the team, and he uses a hefty battle axe to fight.
  • Covert Pervert: When he sees Kurenai walking a naked Human Pet full Dominatrix style, he bluntly express his wish to be her pet himself, clashing with his stone-faced and brutish character.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Serves the morally bankrupt Kurenai, and has two massive tusks jutting out of his mouth.
  • Lightning Bruiser: On top of being a huge, bulky alien with incredible strength and the durability to withstand Shiki's attacks, he also has Super-Speed.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He scolds Garrot for torturing prisoners at his leisure, calling them Kurenai's "property".
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: One moment, Garrot is alone, complaining that he should have killed Shiki and Homura on the spot. The next moment, Baku is standing behind him, scolding him for hurting Kurenai's property.
  • The Stoic: He has a scowling face no matter what he says. He does, however, become Not So Stoic when zealously inflicting "divine punishment" on his foes, and when he's shocked by Arsenal (Weisz) giving him a tacky nickname.
  • Super-Speed: He can move at incredible speeds, which makes him a Lightning Bruiser with his bulk. This is showcased during his fight with Shiki when Baku overtakes him despite Shiki getting a head start.
  • Sword Beam: His Sonic Wave technique creates blades of Ether with a swing from his axe. However, Weisz's Arsenal Suit has an Ether coating that lets him No-Sell the attack.
  • Villainous Friendship: Although it appears to be one-sided, he thinks fondly enough of Garrot to send him a message in person rather than over the comm system just because he wanted to see him, putting a hand on his shoulder while doing it.

Valkyrie's Army

    In General
A resistance movement of Valkyrie's followers from the Labor District who oppose Madame Kurenai's tyranny.
  • La Résistance: They were inspired by Valkyrie to take a stand against Madame Kurenai, but they don't make their move until they learn Homura is Kurenai's daughter and try to get her to join their ranks.

A thief and Valkyrie's self-proclaimed disciple during her time on Sun Jewel. He has a robotic bird called Flappy that serves as his eyes and ears on the planet. He uses the Ether Gear Steal Hand, which teleports objects as far as 10 centimeters away into his hand.

  • Acrofatic: He moves surprisingly fast despite his chubby body, which is effective in getting close enough to his enemies to rob them blind.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He and Rebecca arrive just in time to help Shiki and Homura save from Black Rock.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's introduced sitting in a zen pose on his head, but he's surprisingly competent and his powers aren't just for show.
  • Calling Your Attacks: "Steal!"
  • Dirty Old Man: He's a shameless Panty Thief on top of looking like a middle-aged man.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: The power to grab anything 10cm away sounds like it's only useful for pick-pocketing, but it's essential to removing the laborers' slave collars. The anime also shows him applying his power in battle against Madame Kurenai's Punishers by stealing their vital mechanics straight from their chests.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He made himself Valkyrie's disciple, despite her never agreeing to it, after seeing her awe-inspiring strength first-hand. He's also still distraught by her death, and is reduced to tears when he finishes explaining to Homura and her friends how her teacher died.
  • Impossible Theft: What his Ether Gear allows him to do. As he demonstrates, they're perfect for stealing underwear.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Flappy can only communicate through tweets and chirps, though Paul can understand him just fine.
  • Karma Houdini: He suffers no retribution for stealing Rebecca's underwear, despite Rebecca swearing to get back at him for it.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: He's rarely seen far apart from his bird, Flappy, who is also a robot.
  • Manly Tears: Paul drops his stoic demeanor and weeps openly when Homura finds Valkyrie's body and learns that she died saving him and the other laborers.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He has a unique appearance among the other characters, being rather fat and having a large head with swollen cheeks.
  • Panty Thief: He uses his Steal Hand to swipe Rebecca's panties, calling them "spoils of war".
  • Perpetual Frowner: Almost always wears a grim, smug expression.
  • Power Perversion Potential: He uses his power to warp objects straight into his hands to steal women's underwear.
  • Rebel Leader: He's the implied de facto leader of Valkyrie's Army, since he was Valkyrie's Number Two before the group was formed.
  • Spy Cam: Flappy has one in his oversized left eye, which lets Paul observe what happens outside the labor district.
  • Sticky Fingers: He's such a chronic thief thanks to his Ether Gear that he was sent to Sun Jewel's labor district for it.
  • The Stoic: He's usually a serious, straight-faced type of guy, though he has his moments of being Not So Stoic, like his Manly Tears while explaining to Homura how Valkyrie died.
  • Teleportation: His Ether Gear, Steal Hand, works by instantly teleporting objects within 10cm into his hands.

From left to right: Van, Eger, and Yak

A trio of veteran Stone hunters.

  • All There in the Script: Their names are provided by the anime credits, with the final arc confirming Eger's name in the manga.
  • Animal Motifs: Eger's name comes from "eagle" (written on one of his gloves in the manga) and has wing tattoos on his forehead; Van wears a face mask with the ears and pawprint marking of a bear; and Yak has a bandanna with the image of a shark.
  • Bald Head of Toughness: Eger is a balding, middle-aged man and seasoned hunter who's respected by the team's younger members.
  • Battle Chant: They have one that counts as a collective Character Catchphrase, which they repeat every time they go into battle: "One plus two makes a million power!"
  • Big Damn Heroes: They come to Shiki and Homura's rescue when the two are overwhelmed by a swarm of insectoid Stones.
  • Facial Markings: Eger has wing tattoos on his temples as part of his Animal Motif.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Though they mean well when they want Homura's help in taking down Madame Kurenai, they don't seem as concerned about her Heroic BSoD over Valkyrie's death as her friends are.
  • Mr. Exposition: Apart from saving Shiki and Homura, they serve mainly to explain what Stones are and how Sun Jewel's society really functions.
  • Never Bareheaded: Van and Yak are always seen with their Signature Headgear.
  • Rugged Scar: Eger has one running across his right eye, selling his image as a hardened veteran.
  • Signature Headgear: Van has his bear mask and Yak has his shark bandanna.
  • Spell My Name With An S: In Pocket Galaxy, all of their names are changed to Igur, Ban, and Yakk, respectively.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Like most of the army, they take Shiki, Rebecca and Homura for a bunch of inexperienced, sort of dimwitted kids who are in way over their heads, and can't fathom why Paul would entrust any of them with defeating Madame Kurenai. They're naturally flabbergasted when Paul reveals they defeated Black Rock, the toughest monster any of them are supposed to face.

Others

    Cedric

Cedric

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_cedric_anime.png

A supermodel and certified butler from Genos, a planet reputed for its attractive men. Unfortunately for him, his career and life are destroyed by Madame Kurenai when he applies to be her attendant, leaving him to crawl in the poor sector of Sun Jewel.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: The anime makes him more physically aggressive when taking his revenge than he already was in the manga. Here, instead of hitting her in the face with a bat just once to stop her in her tracks, he does it a second time for talking back to him, and then breaks her leg off-screen to keep her from escaping.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: His cruel assault on Kurenai after Homura spares her life is what allows her to face a more decisive comeuppance.
  • Batter Up!: He uses a metal bat to assault Madame Kurenai out of revenge for what she did to his face.
  • Career-Ending Injury: He takes special care of his face, since the slightest injury or imperfection would put him out of a modeling career. Madame Kurenai, being the Sadist she is, permanently scars him for this reason.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Averted. The abuse he and Madame Kurenai put each other through—Kurenai maiming and enslaving Cedric for touching her face, and Cedric getting brutal payback against her—are both treated as horribly and senselessly cruel, regardless of Cedric framing it as Laser-Guided Karma.
  • Facial Horror: He gets his face burned by Madame Kurenai for touching hers without consent.
  • Handsome Lech: He tries acting the part of The Casanova when he's ordered by Madame Kurenai to take off all his clothes during a job application, but oversteps his bounds when he strokes her face, which earns him a scorched face.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Following his disfigurement and fall from grace, he trades his classy suit out for a leather jacket and pants, signifying his degradation into a brutal thug.
  • Human Pet: After disfiguring him, Madame Kurenai decides to keep him as a pet for a little while because she at least thought he was cute, walking him on a leash with no clothes save for a leather mask.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: He gets his hands on an intimidating mask with built-in Sinister Shades and what looks like a Slasher Smile to hide his facial scarring.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's introduced as a good-looking Bishōnen with a nice bod that he gets to show off when he strips naked for Kurenai. However, he's treated to Fan Disservice when Kurenai scars his face, forcing him to cover it up with a frightening mask.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Deconstructed. He applies for a position as Madame Kurenai's attendant, but gets far more intimate with her than the job requires by stroking her face after she orders him to strip naked. For this invasion of personal space, she mutilates his face.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: After Madame Kurenai burns his face and turns him into a Human Pet, he retaliates in full once she falls from grace by rallying a gang of thugs she imprisoned, breaking her face with a bat, and planning to turn her into their pet. This lasts for an entire year, leaving Kurenai in such a horrible state that she winds up dying.
  • Shameful Strip: At first he gladly strips naked for Kurenai under her orders, thinking she has something more sensual in mind, but it's meant to be an act of total subservience. This gets hammered in when she keeps him naked while treating him like a Human Pet.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Once his life is destroyed by Kurenai sadistically disfiguring him, Cedric doesn't hold back from cracking her in the face (and in the anime, breaking her legs for extra measure) with a bat when the opportunity for revenge comes.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It's not stated what becomes of him after the Sun Jewel arc. All that's known is that Ziggy's forces recovered Kurenai from his gang's captivity shortly before she died.

    Punishers

Punishers

Voiced by: Takuya Nakashima, Kōsuke Katayama (Japanese), Kellen Goff (English)

Madame Kurenai's android soldiers who pass judgment onto the "lesser" criminals of Sun Jewel.

  • Mecha-Mooks: They're Madame Kurenai's robotic footsoldiers. They also don't last long at all once Shiki decides to let Kurenai have it.

    Stones

Stones

Mineral-based lifeforms that infest the caves and mines of Sun Jewel. The metal ore on their bodies serves as Madame Kurenai's primary source of income.

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Black Rock's entire body is covered in impenetrable crystal scales with the exception of a weak spot on its back.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: The most common Stones take on the appearance of ants and wasps the size of a human thigh. This poses a particular problem for Shiki, who freezes up at the mere sight of them.
  • Call a Smeerp a "Rabbit": Invoked when Shiki and Homura face Black Rock, whose body vaguely resembles a cat, which Homura encouorages Shiki to focus on when he has bug-like Stones on his mind.
  • Fed to the Beast: The highest crime for insubordination on Sun Jewel is to be sent to the den of Black Rock, the largest and strongest Stone of all.
  • Hero Killer: An entire swarm of Stones once managed to damage Valkyrie—one of the strongest fighters of the Edens Zero crew—beyond all hope of repair, effectively killing her.
  • Kaiju: It's said by Sun Jewel's prisoners that some Stones take on the forms of giant monsters, with Black Rock serving as the prime example.
  • Lamprey Mouth: Black Rock's entire head is essentially a funnel-shaped mouth with no eyes.
  • Our Monsters Are Weird: While most Stones generally resemble normal animals, Black Rock has the most surreal design of them all, appearing to be a cross between a dragon and a Persion cat with a funnel-shaped head.
  • Rock Monster: Downplayed. Stones look like regular organic creatures, but they have varying degrees of metal ore that protrude from their bodies. Black Rock, on the other hand, plays this completely straight by being covered from head to toe in crystal scales.
  • Super-Toughness: Black Rock's scales are strong enough to withstand Shiki's gravity-powered punches and shatter Homura's Ether sword on contact.
  • Zerg Rush: No matter how weak they are individually, Stones are at their deadliest in large numbers. One agitated horde threatened to completely decimate the entire labor district, and was enough to kill Valkyrie despite all of them being slain by her in the end.
