Playable Characters

Tropes that apply to all characters
  • Adaptational Badass: Awakening Skills depict them as being far more violent and badass compared to their DFO counterparts due to being allowed to be out-and-out cutscenes thanks to the 1v1 nature of the game. For example, in the original game, Blood Riven has the Berserker transform into Blood Majin and dive forward to create an Area of Effect attack; in this game, Blood Riven has Blood Majin capturing the opponent in its maw and dragging them skyward before smashing back into the ground hard enough to blast droplets of blood all over the arena.
  • Badass Normal: In a cast where almost everyone has guns, swords, both, and/or some kind of magical or forbidden power, the two Fighter characters stick out for having no special gimmicks or traits. They're just really good at hand-to-hand combat and are strong enough to go toe to toe with the rest of the superpowered and technologically advanced opponents.
  • Broad Strokes: The order in which the characters all encounter each other differs, as do the events relating to them. The context and timing of these encounters depend on which character's Story Mode the player is on, though some events are universal to each other's Story Mode such as Enchantress creating a barrier that keeps out anyone who doesn't have a Will.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The Berserker, the Ghostblade, and the Vanguard all wield different kinds of dark power sourced from supernatural or outright evil entities, but they are still considered heroes in the DFO universe.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The characters are not given proper names, instead simply having the name of their DFO subclass as their "name".
  • No Name Given: None of the playable characters are given names, instead referred to by their class titles. If they have names, they're never mentioned and are instead called Hey, You!, by their titles, or in Berserker's case, unable to remember their name.
  • Shoryuken: Everyone in the roster has at least one invincible reversal move that hits vertically, is extremely easy to punish if blocked, and is tied to ↓+MP or →↓↘+MP, fitting the trope only in the mechanical sense. The Striker's Rising Fist is the only one of these moves that actually fits the bill visually, being a jumping, spinning uppercut like the original Shoryuken.

    Berserker

Berserker

"Think you can keep me entertained?"

A swordfighter whose left arm is possessed by the demon Kazan, becoming one of many men known as "Slayers". A Slayer who submits to Kazan's will becomes a Berserker, a being of pure rage and power that uses his own blood as a weapon, forming attacks and deadly implements to annihilate his foes.

The Berserker we follow in DNF Duel finds himself on the run from the De Los empire after massacring an entire village in a fit of rage. He now aspires to reach the Principality of Bel Myre's forest so that he may avoid capture as well as possibly temper his bloodlust.

In DNF Duel, the Berserker is a "Standard"-type fighter with well-rounded capabilities that make him beginner-friendly. His fighting style encourages charging in and laying the smackdown on one's opponent, with skills that allow him to increase his lethality at the cost of health, a setback that can be offset by his ability to steal his opponent's health with "Thirst" awakening skill.

  • Ambidextrous Sprite: The Berserker's model inexplicably flips whenever he changes direction, with his cursed arm and sword-wielding arms swapped.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Downplayed. He still has most of his memories, but for some reason, Berserker can't remember his actual name.
  • Blood Knight: He's always looking for a good brawl with anyone who challenges him. Although lacking in details compared to the other fighters, Berserker isn't going to turn down any opportunity for a fight. Just ask Striker.
  • Bloody Murder: The Berserker wields his own blood in combat in countless ways, such as creating Sword Beams out of his own blood with Gore Cross, forming his arm into a bloody tornado that pulls opponents in with Bloody Twister, or outright transforming into a beast made entirely out of blood to decimate his foes with Blood Riven.
  • Cast from Hit Points: His neutral MP Skill is "Frenzy", which gives him a buff that temporarily enhances the damage and properties of certain Skills and MP Skills while gradually turning his HP into White Damage. Skilled players can take advantage of this and use this to set up a Conversion.
  • Facepalm Of Doom: Bloodlust is a command grab that does this, sucking the life force out of his opponent face first and then tossing them away.
  • Ground Pound: Outrage Break is this with a sword made of blood, forming erupting blood geysers at his landing point. Unlike DFO, it's restricted to a midair-only move and the Berserker attacks almost straight downwards.
  • Life Drain: His Awakening passive, Thirst, lets him do this in proportion to how much damage he deals.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His sclera makes it dark to see, but he has red eyes. His class title should be enough of an indicator that picking a fight with him is not advised.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to his fellow Slayer offshoot, Ghostblade. They even have colour-coded arms!
  • Red Right Hand: Red Right Arm, rather. It's a result of what's known as Kazan Syndrome in the DFO universe.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Bloody Twister pulls in his opponent to set up for a huge uppercut.

    Ghostblade

Ghostblade

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ghostblade.png

"This one seems quite feisty! Let me lend you my strength!"
"...Prepare yourself."

A Berserker whose possession by Kazan brought him to the brink of death until a serendipitous encounter with a mysterious specter resurrected him as a Ghostblade, a Slayer reborn as an entity that is neither alive nor dead. Now allied with the ghost that inhabits his body, the Ghostblade combines the strength of his undead being with that of his ghost to cut down all that stand in his path.

In DNF Duel, the Ghostblade is a "Gimmicky"-type fighter who can use his Ghost to trip up his opponents, attacking in conjunction with the spirit in addition to teleporting to swap places with the Ghost to compensate for his otherwise subpar mobility. His Awakening passive, "Phantasmal Binity", increases his damage output when he is on the ropes.

  • Amnesiac Hero: Mohan recalls very little, if anything about himself. He didn't even know his name. The only reason he learns it at all is thanks to Nemyr.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: In his Story Mode, he delivers one to Kunoichi and asks her if she's following her will and wishes or her master's.
  • Criss-Cross Attack: His Awakening Skill, Phantasmal Slayer, ends with the Ghostblade and his ghost passing through their opponent, making a red X as they cut them down.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Mohan isn't overly malicious and only wants to help his host. Throughout the Ghostblade's Story Mode, he worries about his unusual behavior after he starts absorbing Will from his fallen opponents, but hopes it will stave off the phantomization.
  • Death from Above: Cross Slash and Ghost: Targeted Hit are both heavy slashes that start in midair. He also has the option to do this with Ghost: Sky Slash, which is normally a grounded Anti-Air move.
  • Emotionless Girl: A male variant. Because of his status as neither alive nor dead, Ghostblade rarely expresses any sort of emotion. This changes as he starts collecting Will from other combatants.
  • Find the Cure!: Downplayed. Mohan, while wary of the potential dangers of Will, hopes that absorbing enough of the stuff will prevent the Ghostblade's phantomization, or at the very least slow down its progress.
  • Flash Step: To make up for his lack of general mobility, both the Ghostblade and his ghost have ways to move great distances in an instant.
  • Guardian Entity: Mohan, the ghost possessing him. He manifests to protect him, and contrary to its appearance, worries about its host.
  • Ham and Deadpan Duo: The ghost Mohan and Ghostblade, respectively. The former's bombastic and a showy Blood Knight in battle, while the latter is soft-spoken, stoic, and efficient with his sword strikes. The ghost even lampshades their dynamic when they win:
"Hmph! You're still not ready yet." [looks at the Ghostblade, who's already walking away] "...What a cold-hearted fellow."
  • Hidden Depths: The Ghostblade is one of the few characters who seems to understand what having a Will really means, having come to understand it after numerous clashes with other people who possessed a Will of their own. This is also perhaps why he hands over the collected Will within him to Nemyr willingly, unlike other characters who've had theirs taken by force.
  • Mighty Glacier: Unlike the Berserker, who's more of an all-rounder, the Ghostblade has little in the way of mobility without Flash Stepping and specializes in slow, but hard-hitting single strikes.
  • Mythology Gag: The spirit possessing the Ghostblade is named Mohan, likely the same individual named in the bio for Neo Ghostblade in DFO.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After gaining Will from Nemyr and absorbing Will from his fallen opponents, the Ghostblade slowly becomes more emotive. This surprises Mohan since at the start of his Story Mode he was uninterested and unreactive to most things prior to meeting Nemyr.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes like Berserker, and underestimating him is a quick way to the grave given his swordsmanship and possession.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Berserker's red, right down to them both having colour-coded arms.
  • Three-Strike Combo:
    • Drive Slash hits three times, switching sides with his opponent and ending in a launcher.
    • Ghost: Phantom Wind makes the ghost take three wide, advancing strikes with a lot of Hit Stop, making it good for pressuring a blocking opponent.
  • Undeathly Pallor: Has noticeably pale skin, a reflection of his undead nature.

    Inquisitor

Inquisitor

Voiced by: Si-hyun Kang (KR), Hibiku Yamamura (JP), Zhou Shuai (CN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inquisitor_6.png

"Faith must be taught firsthand, not by words. Heretics will be punished!"

A girl whose chance encounter with Imposter Syndrome, a curse that turns living beings into mindless, demonic puppets known as Imposters, lead to her turning to the path of God to find her salvation, becoming a holy warrior known as a Priest. Among Priests is a force known as the Inquisition, an all-female army of elite enforcers who wield their Battle Axes and holy fire to smite all those who would defy God's order, no matter how severe the crime.

One Inquisitor is given orders directly from Bishop Antonio to investigate a mysterious anomaly known as the Wonder.

In DNF Duel, the Inquisitor is a "Traps"-type fighter who leverages firebombs and the Burning Wheel to lock her opponents down. What she lacks in mix-up options, she compensates for in strong defenses with Summary Justice, a reversal that can turn the tables on her foes. Her Awakening passive, "Coldhearted Inquisitor", allows her to recover MP more quickly.

  • Burn the Witch!: Invoked in her Finishing Move, Blazing Hell, which leaves her opponent strapped on a wooden cross as the Inquisitor delivers their last rites before engulfing the whole thing in flames.
  • Cooldown Manipulation: Of a sort - her Awakening passive, Cold-hearted Inquisitor, shortens the delay of her MP recovery after using an MP Skill.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Inquisitor mistakingly believes that 'Will' is some kind of evil force that automatically corrupts others, including a fellow devout like Crusader. She still fails to realize what it is even at the end of her Story Mode when she meets Nemyr.
  • Foil: The Crusader is a muscular bear of a man whose weapon of choice is a giant hammer and uses holy abilities, and despite what his appearance may suggest, he's actually a fairly nice man when not in battle. The Inquisitor is lithe, slim, wields a giant battle ax who uses fire, and is an Ice Queen who doesn't care who or what her opponent is; if they're evil, they're getting sent to the stake.
  • Gasoline Dousing: Not with literal gasoline, but her Flege's Essence Skill allows her to toss a flask that breaks into a puddle of fluid on hit. If an opponent touches the puddle or is simply hit with the flask itself, they'll gain a temporary debuff; hitting them with an MP Skill while the debuff is active ignites the opponent and inflicts additional damage.
  • Ice Queen: She's a straight-laced, hardcore Inquisitor who shows respect when necessary, but is otherwise cold even to fellow worshippers like the Crusader.
  • Kill It with Fire: All over the place.
    • The Inquisitor can augment all of her moves with Burning Hit if she uses any attack while standing on the puddle of fire left behind by Flege's Firebomb.
    • Burning Wheel summons a flaming Catherine wheel that spins in place.
    • Lastly, the aforementioned Finishing Move burns her opponent on a giant wooden cross.
  • Knight Templar: Compared to the Crusader, she's insistent on dishing out "divine punishment" to anyone harboring 'evil energy' (actually 'Will') regardless if they lack any sort of malicious intent. Not even her fellow believer Crusader is exempt from this in her Story Mode as she believes he's become corrupted when he tries to convince her 'Will' isn't as evil as she thinks it is.
  • Light Is Not Good: Unlike Crusader, she will not compromise or hold back in dishing out 'divine punishment' to anyone she perceives as evil. It doesn't help she thinks 'Will' is some kind of corruptive, dark force.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Albeit in a different manner than Hitman. Whereas the latter is quick to realize what 'Will' is, Inquisitor learns of it via a second-hand source who mistakes it for some kind of corruptive influence. This misconception is never cleared up.
  • Religious Bruiser: Like her male counterpart, she fights evil in the name of God, but more appropriately fits into the Glacier Waif archetype and leans more toward a Knight Templar compared to the Crusader.

    Grappler

Grappler

Voiced by: Seung-hyeong Lee (KR), Shunsuke Takeuchi (JP), Liu Yijia (CN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grappler.png

"Watch yourself. You're in my domain."

A warrior from Suju, a country in western Arad famed for its local art of combat, Suju fighting, which emphasizes kicking attacks. The Grappler is a male Fighter who has become one with the ways of the Black Opal Ring, a nomadic "dojo" of male Fighters who resent the spread of Suju Fighters across the continent and seek to take down wealthy dojos and redistribute their funds. To facilitate their largely-indoor combat setting, members of the Black Opal Ring adopted a style of fighting not unlike the female Grapplers seen elsewhere, ultimately taking up a similar title to mask their identities.

In DNF Duel, the Grappler is a "Grabs"-type character whose command grabs make him a menace at close quarters, in addition to a strong mix-up game and super armor in some of his attacks that let him power through and punish opponents' mistakes. In exchange for his impressive damage output, his defensive options are more limited. His Awakening passive, "Iron Physique", reduces the chip-damage he takes when blocking.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Comes across as a bigger Jerkass in Striker's Story Mode, as when asked about why he destroyed her dojo, Grappler simply dismisses it as some unknown backwater one that he must have destroyed along his journey. Whereas in his own Story Mode, Grappler at least assumes that it must have been a corrupt dojo and mentions redistributing its funds after destroying it, which aligns with the goal of the Black Opal Ring.
  • Badass Normal: All he's got going for him is his martial arts, but that doesn't mean he can't be as effective as anyone else in the roster.
  • Blood Knight: A tamer example compared to Berserker and Vanguard. Grappler is a Challenge Seeker who wants to fight strong opponents so he can reach the "Ultimate Will".
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Near the end of his and Striker's Story Modes, the two come across each other near the last Wonder and the latter demands to know why he destroyed her dojo. Grappler fails to recognize her, but he at least knows she's from one of the dojos he destroyed throughout his journey.
  • Charged Attack: All of the Grappler's skills, MP Skills, and even his Awakening can be charged by holding down the button to change their properties (e.g., the charged Air Steiner causes the opponent to bounce off the ground for extended combos, while the charged Shoulder Tackle gains Super Armor.)
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Being a slow, grab-oriented character puts him at a massive disadvantage against a roster where pretty much everyone has full-screen attacks and pressure. However, once he actually manages to get in, his ability to rack up damage is virtually unparalleled, and unlike your typical fighting game grappler, he can maintain powerful high-damage combos that utilize his grabs to manipulate his opponent's position, setting them up for his other physical strikes.
  • Diving Kick: Grappler can do a leaping aerial stomp that hits his opponent from above.
  • Foil: He's intentionally contrasted with the Striker in terms of fighting style, appearance, and characterization. Whereas the Grappler is aged up to a more grizzled veteran fighter, the Striker's been aged down as a talented but still inexperienced novice.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has several scars on his face, the most prominent one running horizontally across the bridge of his nose.
  • Graceful Loser: Takes his defeat by Striker in the latter's Story Mode surprisingly well and it actually humbles him enough that he considers reevaluating his beliefs.
  • The Grappler: Obviously. However, being a Suju fighter, the Grappler also mixes in a lot of kicking attacks to set up his more powerful Grapple Moves.
  • I Know Karate: His Suju Martial Arts is based around Karate, Judo, and Taekwondo. He's even got the gi to boot.
  • No Sympathy: After defeating Striker in his Story Mode and seeing the loss drive her to tears, Grappler basically tells Striker that her attachment to her long-destroyed dojo is unnecessary and a sign of weakness, takes her seed, and moves on to the next fight.
  • Speed Blitz: His Finishing Move, Sole Bearer: Quaking Tiger, has him pummel the opponent with a series of lightning-fast strikes before driving them into the ground with an earth-shattering diving kick.
  • Stone Wall: He has a variety of defensive moves to withstand any type of strikes, even with a powerful Counter-Attack at his disposal. The Grappler's Awakening Passive, Iron Physique, also boosts his defenses, making him receive less white damage on block.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Karakas and Siusha assume him to be an ordinary Adventurer investigating the Wonder on Sky Tower, he plays along to get more information.
  • Vocal Evolution: The Grappler's voice in Duel is clearly the same as the base Male Fighter's but with a deeper and rougher performance to match the Grappler's appearance and style, distinguishing him from the youthful voice of his DFO counterpart.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: His Awakening Skill uniquely sucks in his opponent (a la Iron Tager) when held down, making up for the fact that it lacks a screen-wide hitbox.

    Striker

Striker

Voiced by: Ji-hyun Lee (KR), Fairouz Ai (JP), Hong Haitian (CN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/striker_9.png

"Let's both do our best!"

An Aradian martial artist who parted ways with her master in search of greater challenges to hone her fighting technique. The Striker is a Fighter who forgoes evolving her fighting technique in favor of training her raw martial skill to its absolute limit, transforming her entire body into a living weapon.

This Striker is on the hunt for the legendary texts of the Fighter known as Shannon Myre in order to hone her skills. However, she is plagued my memories of a Grappler who destroyed the dojo she trained at in her youth.

In DNF Duel, the Striker is a "Melee"-type character whose short range and otherwise middling defensive options belie a martial artist who can beat the daylights out of her enemies with quick, powerful strikes, supplemented by respectable agility. Her Awakening passive, "Power Fist", increases her damage output when her HP starts to run low.

  • Adaptational Modesty: In contrast to her DFO counterpart, the Striker's outfit is considerably less revealing.
  • Age Lift: Compared to her DFO counterpart, she's been aged down from the ambiguous-but-mostly-the-same-as-everyone-else state to be somewhere around her late teens.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Befitting a fighter focused purely on the strength of her body, she's visibly ripped, with particular emphasis on her bare arms and shoulders.
  • Arch-Enemy: When she was a child, her dojo was annihilated by a wandering Grappler who accused them of demanding protection money from the village nearby and was looking for a good fight. She's held a grudge ever since and is understandably pissed when she comes across him in both hers and the Grappler's Story Modes.
  • Badass Adorable: Especially emphasized in her intro animation, which has her send a sandbag flying before cutely introducing herself.
  • Badass Normal: In a cast full of characters that use weapons and/or magic, the Striker breaks the mold by holding her own with deft punches and kicks.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Her move set embodies this by making it easier to get in on her opponent with her various shoulder-tackling MP Skills and pressuring them with her kick moves. Her Awakening passive, Power Fist, only emphasizes this further by making her deal more damage and white damage on block.
  • Diving Kick: Striker does a traditional diagonal diving kick to fly at her opponents.
  • Hammerspace: She pulls out a large metal water bottle in her round victory animation. Who knows how she pulled it out from behind.
  • Foil: She's intentionally contrasted with the Grappler in terms of fighting style, appearance, and characterization. Whereas the Striker's been aged down as a talented but still inexperienced novice, the Grappler is aged up to a more grizzled veteran fighter. They also have differing ideals, with the Grappler pursuing strength and challenging opponents in search of the "Ultimate Will" and the Striker believing that power should be used to protect others.
  • Hurricane Kick: The Striker is seen using the (aptly named) Tornado Kick skill, where she performs three spinning kicks forward to juggle opponents.
  • I Know Karate: Or rather "I Know Kung-Fu" in this case; her Aradian Martial Arts are based around Bajiquan, Wing-Chun, and Jeet-Kun-Do.
  • Jiggle Physics: The Striker's bust is fairly pronounced in her opening animation. As expected, it bounces more than a little.
  • Kick Chick: Several of her moves involve powerful kicks.
  • Ms. Fanservice: The Female Fighter is no stranger to having her traits being shown off, and her intro has her showing her well-toned butt to the camera for a brief moment. Couple this with an ample bust and a Form-Fitting Wardrobe, and she's a major source of eyecandy.
  • Shoryuken: Rising Fist is a spinning uppercut that goes straight up, like a downplayed version of Ken's Shinryuken.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: The Striker's Awakening, Empress's Climatic Fist, has her blasting away the opponent with a combo, then pulling them back towards her with pure energy to set them up for the finishing punch.

    Ranger

Ranger

Voiced by: Chae-hyun Jeon (KR), Masahiro Yamanaka (JP), Xiong Feng (CN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ranger_4.png

"Phew, I was almost late, wasn't I? You can draw your guns first. You won't stand a chance if you don't."

A gunslinger from Empyrean, a world hidden above the skies of Arad where the Apostle Bakal banned magic, forcing its residents to develop technology. The Ranger is one such man hailing from Empyrean's infamous Lawless District, a place where the only things you can trust are the skin on your back and the guns in your holsters. To survive in the Lawless District, the Ranger has trained to the epitome of gunslinging prowess, using his quick draw and even quicker trigger finger to get down and scrappy with any foe that has the misfortune to cross his path.

In DNF Duel, the Ranger is a "Ranged"-type fighter who is at his deadliest at range, leveraging his gunplay and mobility to riddle his opponents with bullets, so long as he can keep them out of striking distance. His Awakening passive, "Sudden Death", inflicts the "Revenge" debuff on his opponent when his attacks hit true.

  • Battle Aura: When the Ranger uses Seventh Flow, he emits a black aura that leaves a trail of crow feathers in his wake as he Flash Steps around the opponent while blasting them with bullets.
  • Button Mashing: Scud Genocide and Suppressive Barrage can be extended (Mana Meter permitting) by mashing the MP Skill button, a nod to how both of these skills attack faster when button mashing them in DFO.
  • Gratuitous English: Although not to the extent of DFO, where every line he speaks is in English (save for the occasional Spanish in his higher-level skills), the sheer hamminess of his delivery in DNF Duel more than makes up for it, making him sound like a Korean Terry Bogard.
  • Guns Akimbo: The Ranger, a Gunner subclass, uses a pair of revolvers in combat.
  • Gun Twirling: Particularly in his outro animation, which caps off with a set of gratuitous twirls followed by a pose.
  • Hitbox Dissonance: His Deadly Approach MP Skill was the most obvious example of this trope during the beta. His revolvers' muzzle flares had hitbox that extended a fair distance behind him. His easiest combo starter is Steep Slide followed by Deadly Approach, which often results with his back literally touching his opponent for at least part of the move and still hitting them with the muzzle flares.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The Ranger is seen gaining these when he performs his Awakening Skill Seventh Flow.
  • Slide Attack: Steep Slide, one of his melee moves.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: His G-14 Buster skill allows him to toss a grenade down at the opponent mid-jump.
  • Throwing Your Gun at the Enemy: One of the Ranger's attacks is Death Hawk, where he tosses out his revolvers and they spin in front of him like a projectile while automatically spraying bullets everywhere. Additionally, unlike Dungeon Fighter Online, he doesn't have to catch and toss Death Hawk back out again, instead spontaneously exploding after its duration.

    Launcher

Launcher

Voiced by: Sae-ah Lee (KR), Tomo Muranaka (JP), Fan Churong (CN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/launcher.png

"Target acquired! Requesting for artillery backup! Operation start!"

A female gunslinger from Empyrean trained as a member of the elite Ghent Guard unit, only to wind up on a one-way trip to Arad. The Launcher is a purveyor of myriad types of heavy firepower, using her massive arsenal and weapons of mass destruction at her command to lay waste to anything and everything around her.

In DNF Duel, the Launcher is a "Ranged"-type fighter capable of overwhelming her opponents with a barrage of long-ranged attacks that can hit from multiple angles, making her difficult to approach. These attacks are slow, however, and whiffing them can lead to her being punished harshly. Her Awakening passive, "Overheat", doubles her chip damage.

  • BFG: Effectively her entire moveset is based around these, in multiple flavors such as gatling guns, bazookas, beam cannons, flamethrowers, and missile launchers.
  • Composite Character: The F. Launcher's design hybridizes multiple F. Gunner design elements, including the basic F. Gunner outfit, the F. Mechanic's hairstyle and glasses, and the F. Launcher's goggles.
  • Gatling Good: One of her moves is the iconic B.B.Q. attack, a command grab where the Launcher kicks the opponent into the air, then whips out an M-137 Gatling Gun and pumps lead into the foe.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: She has a pair of goggles on her head, but she doesn't use them, instead wearing normal round glasses.
  • Hand Cannon: As a Launcher, her basic weaponry is a pair of golden hand cannons, massive guns the length of her arms that pack a huge punch with each blast.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: Justified in that all of her weaponry is instantaneously materialized into her hands in real time thanks to advanced Empyrean spatial teleportation technology, so she does not actually have to carry them on her person.
  • Kick Chick: Downplayed. Some of her moves are low-level Ranger skills that are universal to all female Gunners in DFO:
    • BBQ starts off with a Marilyn Rose before peppering her opponent with her gatling gun.
    • Spriggan has her sweep the opponent with a sliding kick, then jump off of them while they're knocked down, shooting them with her hand cannons as she flies back from the jump.
    • Her throw animation ends in a Needle Sobat, a speedy side kick.
  • Kick the Dog: On the hunt for Kartel members, she accidentally blows up a bunch of civilians, including Ranger. Her fellow Ghent soldiers administer basic first aid to some of them, but she dismisses actually getting them to a hospital, instead calling for medical support and continuing with her mission.
  • Multi-Ranged Master: Unlike the Ranger, who focuses mostly on his revolvers, the Launcher instead uses a plethora of weapons, like flamethrowers, laser rifles, large handguns and missile launchers.
  • Never My Fault: She tries to apologize for accidentally killing several Rangers on the grounds she was given bad intel. While that may be true, she also only let her team to administer basic first aid and ignored one of her soldier's suggestions to get the wounded to a hospital.
  • Pistol-Whipping: One of her attacks involves uppercutting the foe with the barrel of her hand cannon, then performing a side kick to launch them away.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She is incredibly tall, towering over every other woman in the game and either matching or exceeding the height of multiple male fighters.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: She is also capable of using the G-14 Buster much like her male counterpart; however, unlike the Ranger, who can only use it in midair, she throws it low to the ground.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Her Awakening move, Ancient Trigger, has her summon a powerful beam cannon that obliterates everything in its way.

    Hitman

Hitman

Voiced by: Won-seok Seo (KR), Eiji Hanawa (JP), Li Yuantao (CN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hitman_1.png

"The Company will take control of this place."

A member of The Company, a secret society of Agents allied to the Empryean elite that was forced to flee to Arad after it was betrayed by its masters, eventually becoming a renowned mercenary squad. The Hitman is a special Agent of The Company employed to carry out operations against the group's rival organizations; wielding an odachi and SMG in hand, the Hitman deftly wields powerful, wide-ranged sword strikes alongside masterful gunplay to take down anyone who would dare do The Company harm.

In DNF Duel, the Hitman is a "Standard"-type fighter whose combat style is highly versatile and grant him tools for almost any situation, so long as he can deal with opponents that prefer to fight at range. His Awakening passive, "Battle Command", grants him an additional attack that can follow up on MP attacks: "Shattering Strike".

  • Ambidextrous Sprite: Zigzagged - the position of the scar going across the Hitman's eye changes depending on which side of the screen he is standing.
  • Camera Abuse: The camera gets shot at a few times at end of his Finishing Move, Dusk Wings, bearing aesthetic similarities to some of his later Awakening skills in DFO.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Unlike some of the other characters, Nemyr delivers Hitman's Will to him in the form of a dream. This results in him being unaware of the mission he's been set to by her and why he has Will - not that it matters, as The Company assigns him to what is effectively the very same mission.
  • Guns Akimbo: He carries a second SMG under his coat, and fires both simultaneously as the 'final' hit of Dusk Wings.
  • Me's a Crowd: His Awakening passive, Battle Command, gives him access to Shattering Strike. By pressing MP after any other MP skill, the Hitman slashes in three different directions at once with two clones that appear alongside him.
  • More Dakka: Many of his moves are punctuated with at least a handful of bullets from his SMG. His normals alone have him burst firing the SMG in between odachi slashes, like his basic attack string in DFO.
  • Spectacular Spinning:
    • Bill Drill, one of his special moves, has him sweeping his opponent with his odachi and then briefly spinning for a multi-hit finisher.
    • Helix Dive appears virtually unchanged from DFO (other than being a midair-only move in this game), with the Hitman spinning at an angle in the air with his odachi brandished and spraying SMG rounds everywhere before striking downwards with the odachi at the peak of his jump.
  • Sword and Gun: As is the case with all of the Agent subclasses, the Hitman wields both. In his case, he has a submachine gun and an odachi.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: His Caracole move, in which he throws his sword in a spinning boomerang fashion while shooting it. It's one of his few ways to have advantage on block.

"Here you are. No takebacks allowed, 'kay?"

An Agent of the Company who developed a reputation as a master mercenary, a one-man army capable of handling any job with ease thanks to employing a fighting style never-before-seen on the Aradian continent. Armed with a shotgun, a square sword, and lots and lots of explosives, the Troubleshooter sweeps the battlefield with an entrance as mind-blowing as his destructive finale.

In DNF Duel, the Troubleshooter is a "Standard"-type fighter who exemplifies the idea of the Jack of All Trades, but Master of None: while he has well-rounded capabilities, he doesn't stand out in any one area. His Awakening passive, "Handle Explosives", enhances his magic attacks.

  • BFS: Wields a square sword in combat, the heaviest type of weapon Agents can use in DFO.
  • Booze-Based Buff: Implied with Swashbuckler's Refinement (←+S), one of his special moves. He takes a swig out of his canteen, increasing his damage briefly at the expense of some of his health. His victory animation has him finishing the whole thing, topping it off with a classic Beergasm.
  • Deadly Delivery: He somehow manages to sneak his large shotgun in disguised as a bouquet of roses.
  • Gratuitous English: He often speaks English, like many of his fellow Empyreans, but his use of reaches almost Terry Bogard leves, with his "HOW ABOUT THIS?", "HOW ABOUT THAT?" and "HAVE A GOOD TIME".
  • Improbable Use of a Weapon: A lot of his square sword moves are done with explosives strapped on it, giving his sword strikes an explosive punch.
  • Senseless Violins: He takes his square sword out of one of these during his intro. His sawed-off, on the other hand, is hidden in a large bouquet of roses.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: Wields a sawed-off double barrel in his off hand.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Much of his moveset makes liberal use of explosives.
  • Sword and Gun: Similar to the Hitman, and as with other Agent subclasses, the Troubleshooter wields both. In his case, a large square sword and a sawed-off shotgun.

"I'll show you what real power is."

A young woman who discovers that she is one of many identical counterparts created and dispersed across the multiverse to find the missing god Carloso, setting her down the path of becoming a Knight. The Dragon Knight is a Knight who has synchronized with an alternate dimension counterpart that once defended Apostle Bakal in a dimension where Bakal ruled both Arad and Empyrean before his untimely demise at the hands of the Dark Elves. Accompanied by her dragon familiar Astra, the Dragon Knight uses both ground and air to her advantage, wielding sword, shield, and wings in tandem to soar to victory.

On the Day of the Waning Dragon, after perishing on an unknown battlefield, one Dragon Knight reawakens to find herself transported to a mysterious location.

In DNF Duel, the Dragon Knight is a "Gimmicky"-type fighter who supplements her long attack range with her dragon familiar, Astra. As long as she can make effective use of her MP with her high-cost moves, she can keep her opponents under pressure. Her Awakening passive, "Dragon Force", increases her MP recovery.

  • Adaptational Modesty: The Knight class is infamous for her bust size in the original game, but in Duel both her bust and her bouncing have been considerably toned down to the point where the Striker looks bustier.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: In DFO, almost all of her official art depicts her with a serious, focused expression and she generally has a deeper tone of voice in battle. Here, she's a cheerful Genki Girl that smiles a lot and cuddles with her dragon familiar Astra in her intro and winning animations.
  • Air-Dashing: Just like DFO, she's capable of air dashing with the use of her dragon wings.
  • Dragon Knight: Read her character class again. She herself is a Weredragon with horns and sproutable wings, wears a dragon head-shaped gauntlet that can grow to before a large dragon head and is accompanied with a small dragon familiar that can transform into a large dragon as seen in her cinematic super.
  • Jiggle Physics: Just like in DFO, the Dragon Knight has clearly visible bounce in many of her animations.
  • Knightly Sword and Shield: Wields a Katana in one hand and a shield in the other, a defining element of what gives her the title of "Knight". The Dragon Knight is additionally seen using the ability to turn her shield into a draconic arm used to fire projectiles and blast foes with fire attacks.
  • Ms. Fanservice: With her large breasts, ample cleavage, short skirt, and so forth, she definitely qualifies. That said, she's not as fanservicey in DNF Duel as she is in DFO.
  • One-Winged Angel: Her Awakening attack, "Dragon Sortie", transforms Astra into a massive dragon.
  • Playing with Fire: Being a dragon-themed character, the Dragon Knight uses multiple fire attacks, and Astra itself uses multiple varieties of fire breath.
  • Puppet Fighter: Downplayed; she's accompanied by Astra, her Ridiculously Cute Critter dragon familiar. Astra can be deployed with the MP button to perform an Area of Effect attack at the opponent's location, then can be commanded to follow up with one of three attacks depending on whether the player presses A, B, or S while deploying Astra. Astra's ability to function pseudo-independently of the Dragon Knight enables unique setups and pressure that no other character has, such as being able to perform pincer attacks on the enemy by attacking from both sides.
  • Regenerating Mana: Her Awakening passive, Dragon Force, increases her MP regeneration rate.

"Not coming at me? Then let me come to you!"

One of many men cursed with the power of the fallen Apostle Sirocco; with the ability to wield a lance that steals the souls of their fallen enemies and transform them into power, these men are bestowed the title "Demonic Lancers". The Vanguard is a Demonic Lancer who embraces the curse of the Demonic Lance, becoming a terror of the battlefield who shows his enemies no quarter. While slow, the Vanguard excels in long-ranged, hard-hitting attacks made to rend his foes with sheer absolution.

A dog of the De Los empire, one Vanguard is tasked with hunting down a Berserker who laid waste to an entire village.

In DNF Fighter, the Vanguard is a "Standard"-type fighter who has some of the longest-reaching attacks of the cast that lets him safely apply pressure, at the cost of slow normals and a lack of defensive options. His awakening passive, "Demonic Lance Mastery", increases the rate at which his opponent's guard gauge depletes when his attacks are blocked.

  • Armor-Piercing Attack: His Awakening passive, Demonic Lance Mastery, increases how quickly he drains his opponent's guard meter when his attacks are blocked.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He's a master of the glaive and is boastfully proud of his fighting skills.
  • Blood Knight: Like Berserker, Vanguard also doesn't turn down a fight, though he's a lot calmer about it than the former.
  • Determinator: Berserker and Vanguard's boss are not kidding when they call him a hunting dog; when Vanguard senses Berserker is still alive and someplace else after somehow falling into a Wonder, he goes straight after him and doesn't stop until he finds him. Keep in mind the Wonders are transporting characters to random locations as they're malfunctioning.
  • Mighty Glacier: His slow walk speed, moves, and relative lack of combo routes are offset by his incredible damage.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The Vanguard's eyes glow red when he activates his Awakening, Demonic Inferno.
  • Spectacular Spinning: Devastate has the Vanguard spinning his glaive over his head before lunging with a finishing strike.
  • Villain Protagonist: In his Story Mode, he's hunting down Berserker on behalf of the Imperial army. While they have good reason to do so after Berserker slaughtered a bunch of villagers in his rage, he's also trying to find a way to calm his bloodlust.

"I must do as my master commands. Apologies, but you must die!"

A Dark Elf who broke away from the culture of her heritage in favor of living in Shonan, the capital of Suju where the ability to control a latent power known as Chakra is practiced. By combining Dark Elven magic with Nen and Chakra, the Kunoichi developed a unique combat style known as "ninpou" and soon became a remarkable force within Shonan's underworld, evolving from a simple clan of assassins to a symbol of power among the city's most wealthy and elite. Using her blazing speed and incredible fire-based ninpou, the Kunoichi blitzes her opposition with a firestorm of death and destruction.

In DNF Duel, the Kunoichi is a "Traps"-type fighter whose normal attacks require her to be up-close to her opponents to hit, but compensates for this short range with amazing mobility and ranged magic attacks that let her control the battlefield. Her magic attacks can also be charged with additional Nin to increase their power. Her Awakening passive, "Nin Boost", increases her Nin-binding speed while decreasing the MP costs of her Nin-bound spells.

  • Dual Wielding: She uses twin large kunai as her main weaponry.
  • Double Jump: The only character in the roster capable of doing so, via Aerial Jump.
  • Hand Seals: She performs them when summoning the Sword of Kusanagi.
  • Leotard of Power: Kunoichi wears a form-fitting leotard and has tights underneath them to cover her skin.
  • Me's a Crowd: Her victory animation has her summoning four clones to pose alongside them.
  • Playing with Fire: As a master of ninpou, she specializes in casting fire-based Suju magic.
  • Power Gives You Wings: During her Awakening, Sword of Kusanagi, the Kunoichi manifests a pair of flaming wings to dive downwards at her opponent from above.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She wears a very long crimson colored scarf that flows in the air.

"God, grant me your strength! The time of judgement is upon us!"

One of many Priests, holy warriors dedicated to God and the Lemedia Basilica deployed on a mission to stop the resurrection of Ozma of Chaos. The Crusader is a Priest who uses the power of his faith to show kindness and benevolence to others. While traditionally a Support Party Member, the Crusader employs his massive Hammer and holy magic to hold his own in battle, smiting the darkness with absolution and grace.

In DNF Duel, the Crusader is a "Traps"-type fighter who fills the archetype of the Mighty Glacier: he is sluggish, but overwhelmingly powerful, gifted with long-ranged normals, and capable of controlling space with his Deflect Wall spell. His Awakening passive, "Merciful Strength", bolsters his defenses and white-HP recovery.

  • Blown Across the Room:
    • Haptism, instead of pulling in his enemies as in DFO, sends them flying away from him. If he's facing near the corner or a Deflector Wall, this can potentially start an easy wallbounce combo.
    • Deflector Wall itself can do this to his opponents if they're standing at where it shows up, sending them flying at the Crusader from potentially one corner of the screen to the other.
  • Deflector Shields: Grace of Lemedios is a buff skill that gives him the effects of Light of Divinity, a light shield to reduce the damage he takes and render him Immune to Flinching. However, it briefly leaves him keeled over and vulnerable when its duration ends.
  • Foil: The Inquisitor, besides being female, is a petite Knight Templar wielding a giant battle ax and fire who is uncompromising and harsh in delivering her punishments, failing to understand that 'Will' is not the evil energy she thinks it is and believes anyone who carries it is corrupted and therefore evil, including Crusader himself. The latter is a burly man wielding a giant hammer and uses light-based attacks, and although a devout believer like Inquisitor, he's more kind-hearted and is very quick to realize 'Will' is not corruptive, much less evil.
  • Frickin' Laser Beams: One of the skills is Apocalypse, which summons an orb of shadow that sprays laser beams in a cone-shaped area below it.
  • Hard Light: Deflection Wall summons a wall made of it behind his opponent. Unlike DFO, where it's a mostly useless skill that pushes mobs around slightly, the Crusader can use it to corner his opponent earlier and even do wallbounce combos off of it.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Many of his skills are holy magic applied in lethal ways.
  • Light 'em Up: He can send out damaging orb projectiles, create a massive pillar that blasts foes away, empower his hammer for a powerful elemental attack, and unleash a series of powerful lasers for his super.
  • Light Is Good: Unlike his female counterpart the Inquisitor, he's polite and kind-hearted, even to opponents who's powers are derived from evil sources. In Ghostblade's Story Mode, he offers him some help.
  • Mighty Glacier: Moreso than even the Vanguard, with an even slower walk speed, attack speed, similar lack of combo routes, and massive damage.
  • Religious Bruiser: Easily the biggest character on the roster and by definition uses his faith as a weapon, figuratively and literally.
  • Status Buff: His Grace of Lemedios skill temporarily grants him Light of Divinity and Thunder Hammer: Jupiter, applying damage reduction, Immune to Flinching, and modifying his basic attacks to produce additional hits with increased range.
  • Sticks to the Back: His Jupiter Hammer sticks on his back in his idle and of his skills.
  • Stone Wall: True to his high defense in DFO, his Awakening passive, Merciful Strength, decreases the damage and guard meter damage he takes, as well as increasing his white health recovery speed.

"Does my power interest you? It's not my fault if you get overwhelmed!"

A young outcast Mage from the world of Pandemonium who became enthralled by the power of the Abyss and chose to go through a lethal process of replacing his heart with a piece of the Abyss. The procedure went through, and the Mage was revived afterwards, harnessing the limitless energy of the Abyss in form of powerful gales and storms.

In DNF Duel, the Swift Master is a "Gimmicky"-type fighter who can overwhelm his opponents with his blistering speed and vast mix-up options. His defenses are among the most fragile of the cast, however, so it's important for him to avoid getting struck. His Awakening passive, "Wind Master", further bolsters his mobility.

  • Blow You Away: He is able to command destructive winds to batter his opponents or create powerful vortices.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: His moves don't hit particularly hard, but they come out extremely fast and can combo very easily.
  • Fragile Speedster: Swift Master possesses bar none the best mobility and combo game in the roster, with the ability to create massive strings off any opening and pressure both up close and from afar; if pushed into Awakening, his ground speed virtually doubles, making him the fastest character in the game by a vast margin. However, he also possesses the lowest health of the playable characters, and his attacks are individually quite weak, giving him a rather steep learning curve.
  • Not Quite Flight: He uses the winds to soar above the ground and glide on its surface instead of walking, and only gets his feet on it to crouch.
  • Squishy Wizard: On top of his already high learning curve, he has only 850 HP, making him tied for lowest health in the game alongside Inquisitor and Enchantress.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Headwind creates a horizontal vortex that quickly pulls the Swift Master's opponent into melee range, potentially setting them up for a mixup.

    Enchantress

Enchantress

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enchantress_5.png

"Fufufu... Do you want to become my doll, too?"

A young girl blessed with magical powers who crossed over to Arad from the alternate dimension of Pandemonium, a dying world ruled over by god-like entities known as Apostles. Unlike other Mages, the Enchantress specializes in the use of curses over more traditional magic, putting her at odds with other Mages who treat her practice with disdain.

In DNF Duel, the Enchantress is a "Gimmicky"-type fighter who leverages her doll, Madd, to mix up her opponents and increase her combo and damage potential. On the other hand, she is quite frail, and her MP-hungry abilities require her to make ample use of Conversion and her MP-stealing skills to compensate. Her Awakening passive, "Favoritism", decreases the rate at which her "Showtime!" skill depletes her MP.

  • Cute Witch: Her entire aesthetic, complete with magic broom and puppet familiars.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Zigzagged. While she's not overly malicious, and many of her "evil" actions can be attributed to her young age and the stigma surrounding witches, she's not very nice or kind to anyone other than her dolls and puppets.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Bar none the hardest character to learn in the entire game, as making her combos work relies heavily on being able to control Madd in tandem with the Enchantress herself to utilize the attacks of both characters.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Retains her Girlish Pigtails and frilly black dress from DFO.
  • Forced Transformation: Keep Away! is a command grab that turns her opponent into a doll, a la Hex in DFO. The opponent can't do anything besides walk, jump, or weakly attack with the A button under the effects of this debuff. She'll also perform a more permanent form of this trope on any opponents she beats in her win animation.
  • The Klutz: One of her normal attacks is her tripping over while trying to whack her opponent with her broom, an animation (almost) every female mage class in DFO has. Unlike DFO, it's actually a pretty decent combo filler.
  • Puppet Fighter: She has limited control over her patchwork Creepy Doll familiar, Madd. Pressing the MP Skill button toggles "Showtime!", which hands control over to Madd and changes all of the Enchantress's other MP Skills to Madd-specific ones. Unlike the Ghostblade and Dragon Knight, Madd has a hitbox and can take hits for the Enchantress. Unfortunately, all of these benefits come at the cost of her MP draining constantly as long as she's controlling Madd.
  • Squishy Wizard: She has the lowest health in the game (alongside Inquisitor and fellow Mage Swift Master), giving her that much less room for error.
  • Vine Tentacles: Harvest whips the opponent with rose vines empowered by curses, stealing her opponent's MP in the process.

"Though you are not the one I'm running after... One fight wouldn't hurt."

After the Great Metastasis, the De Los Empire sought to harness its energy to fuel their ranks, kickstarting the ill-fated Vilmark experiments, which saw several children, mainly young girls, being ruthlessly experimented on. The experiments ended in failure, resulting in these young girls becoming Female Slayers, warriors who can wield the power of the Metastasis to their own ends.

However, several of the girls were able to escape these twisted experiments via the help of an Imperial Knight captain named Crowell, who sacrificed his life to ensure their safety. One of these girls was bequeathed a white katana by Crowell in his dying moments, and was sent out into the world where she was taken in by a wandering blacksmith.

Deciding to forge her own path in life, this girl became a Spectre, a swordswoman who wields both a katana and nodachi in tandem with Metastasis powers she received from the Empire's experiments, which she now uses to strike out against her former captors in a one-woman crusade of vengeance.

She is classified as a "Standard"-type fighter, posessing several mobility options as well as slow, but powerful normal attacks. Her Awakening passive, "License", permanently activates her Daredevil buff for the remainder of the round.

  • Counter-Attack: Wildflower puts the Spectre in a brief counter stance. If she gets hit with a melee attack during this time, she retaliates with a blindingly fast strike which knocks down her opponent, setting them up for an easy combo.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Her mobility and mixup options are very taxing on her MP. If she's left stuck without any MP, the most she can do is poke with her slow normals, and her mixup game with her Grappling-Hook Pistol attacks becomes more predictable.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol: Her off-hand weapon, the White Fang, is a short sword with a wire attached to its handle. She gets the most use out of it as a mobility tool, throwing it in a specified direction during a jump, then pulling herself over in that direction.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: All of her moves that don't involve the White Fang are of this nature, beginning and ending with her katana sheathed.
  • Lag Cancel: Her Daredevil buff gives her the ability to cancel her MP Skills into other MP Skills. Casting Daredevil again instead ends the buff and makes her perform Last Order, a hard-hitting single downwards slash that's both great for setting up combos and keeping her opponent in blockstun. If she has the Gold Cube Awakening equipped, she gets the Daredevil buff permanently for the rest of the round after going below 30% HP.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's well-endowed, wears a corset that highlights and props up her bust, and her wardrobe is otherwise very skin-tight while exposing a significant portion of her back. She's also got some minor Jiggle Physics, though not to the degree that the Striker and Dragon Knight do.
  • Razor Wind:
    • Nightfall makes the Spectre backflip a bit and slam the ground with her katana, firing off a large purple wave at the point of impact.
    • Blending Pain and Catharsis both leave a tornado of purple sword slashes in their wakes, making them good pressure tools and Launcher Moves.

"So it's you I'm up against... Heh. Fight like your life depends on it. If you wanna beat me... Do whatever it takes!"

A Male Fighter from Suju who claims the Back Alleys of Hendon Myre as his home turf. Adept in the ways of street fighting, the Brawler has learned how to use every trick of the trade to his advantage in battle, from makeshift lethal weapons to poison needles made to eviserate his foes in excruciating and torturous methods.

In DNF Duel, he is classified as a "Gimmicky"-type, possessing moves with decent range and damage. His Awakening passive, "Rule Break", lets him cancel his MP skills into other ones as well as double the duration of his Poison and Incinerate debuffs.

  • Breaking Old Trends: Unlike the other characters in the game, who are visually based on their base forms or their 1st Awakening forms, the Brawler in Duel is based on his 2nd Awakening as a Hades.
  • Chain Pain: Some of Brawler's attacks have him utilize a set of spectral chains to attack his opponent with. He also has a normal set with a hook at the end in his character art.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Big Time. The Brawler is all about fighting dirty, be it kicking sand into his enemy's eyes a la Yamazaki, throwing poison needles at them or sending several explosive barrels at them.
  • Savage Spiked Weapons: His character art shows him with a makeshift club covered in spikes, which he puts to good use in his Awakening Skill. If one were to look more closely, said club also has what appear to be land mines strapped on.

"Another day, another chance to shine! Are you my opponent? Bring it!"

A Female Mage from the dying world of Pandemonium, crossing the border to Arad. The Battle Mage was taught how to manifest her powers in the form of Chasers, and has trained herself in both mind and body to marry magic and close-quarters combat to fight with superhuman strength.

In DNF Duel, she is a "Standard"-type, skilled at mid-range combat and possessing strong pressure tools thanks to her Chasers. Her Awakening passive, "Armonia", lets her generate Chasers even when her A and B attacks are blocked.

  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: The Battle Mage is just as diminutive as the Enchantress, but has honed her physique to fight on par with the others twice her height.

"The will of God... It is a beacon. Indeed, it is justice itself."

A member of the Order of Priests. Unlike his fellow priests who use giant weapons, the Monk was trained in the Holy Fist technique, letting him specialize in close-quarters combat in order to defeat Imposters.

The Monk is classified as a "Melee"-type; while his attacks don't have much range, both his evasive movement and considerable damage more than make up for it. His Awakening passive, "One True Justice", lets him cancel both his normals and skills into either Ducking Dash or Sway even if they whiff, as well as let him cancel his MP Skills into the two aforementioned moves on hit or block.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Quite literarlly, being called "Monk" and specializing in brawling with his bare fists.

"Why don't we test... The Will of the World... Through you?"

A mysterious swordfighter who awoke in Arad one day with no memories of his past. Little is known of who he is or why he has arrived, but it is said that his fate is deeply intertwined with the fate of Arad as we know it.

In DNF Duel, the Lost Warrior is a "Gimmicky"-type fighter who commands the battlefield with his long-ranged normals, teleportation skills, and special attacks that can track his opponents. To offset these advantages, his attacks are among the slowest of the playable cast, forcing him to play carefully and anticipate his enemy. His Awakening passive, "Logic of the Dimensions", not only strengthens his MP attacks, but extends the duration of his "Time Stop" ability.

  • Ascended Extra: In DFO, his role in the plot amounted to being a sullen NPC on the Saint Horn that creeped everyone out, then appearing in an extremely short questline before his unceremonious removal from the game. The only indication that he even had any plot relevance is if a Knight was going through the aforementioned questline, who recognizes the Lost Warrior as one of Top God Carloso's fragments. In this game, he's an unlockable playable character — the Final Boss, to boot.
  • The Bus Came Back: Duel marks his first appearance since the Great Metastasis, a catastrophic event that created The Multiverse of Dungeon Fighter Online after he was reunited with Carloso.
  • Casting Gag: In the Japanese dub, this is not the first time Kenta Miyake has voiced an edgy, godlike being in an Arc System Works game.
  • Color-Coded Time Stop : The background turns monochrome when his Time Stop ability activates.
  • Composite Character: His overall appearance in combat looks like an amalgamation of a few classes in DFO:
    • His Sword Lines are primarily dark purple, which is the Soul Bender's trademark. One of his command grabs also has an animation that looks like the Soul Bender's Moonlight Slash.
    • His ability to manipulate time is reminiscent of the Dark Knight, a playable darkness-based male Slayer whose Lag Cancel abilities also revolve around time manipulation. Both of them also happen to be unlockable characters in their respective games.
    • He has the ability to attack through rifts in space with spectral swords. The ability itself, as well as the design of the portals, is reminiscent of the Dimension Walker male Mage subclass.
    • His teleport is called Phase Shift. All female Mage subclasses also have a teleport called Phase Shift, although they can only use it when they're getting hit.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He has a dark-themed and edgy design about him, but as a fragment of Carloso he's a neutral party at worst, showing up to test the challenger's Will then punishing Nemyr for her insubordination.
  • Final Boss: Of the Story Mode, regardless of which character you're playing as.
  • Mighty Glacier: Much like the Crusader, he is very big and slow, making him combo food for zoners and more agile targets. However, his moves are very powerful, being able to close gaps rapidly and ignore spacing, and his damage potential and combo power are utterly bonkers, being able to kill off two or fewer interactions.
  • My Name Is ???: When fought before he could be unlocked, as well as in arcade mode, his given name is listed as "???".
  • Pieces of God: He's a fragment of Carloso, the Top God of the setting.
  • Promoted to Playable: Originally a minor story NPC, the Lost Warrior makes his playable debut in Duel as the first character in the game not based on a playable character in DFO.
  • Secret Character: He's unlocked after completing at least one character's Story Mode.
  • Teleport Spam: His movelist makes extensive use of teleportation, whether its him teleporting to his opponent or vice versa.
  • Time Master: Striking the opponent with MP Skills builds stacks of Time Stop. When Time Stop reaches 5 stacks, Time Stop activates, which freezes the opponent in place and allows Lost Warrior to wail on them uninterrupted for a few seconds.
  • Worthy Opponent: He seems to consider the player character this after clashing with them, if this line he says while returning their Will to them is anything to go by.
Lost Warrior: I will remember your Will.

    Nemyr (SPOILER WARNING)

Nemyr The Enlightened

Voiced by: Eu-nae Kang (KR), Arisa Sakuraba (JP), Wang Yaxin (CN)

A divine being who seeks the resurrection of Carloso and the creator of the Knights. Nemyr stands before the chosen class in Story Mode, requesting their help in amassing the Wills of other adventurers, promising them her guidance and help in return.

  • Ascended Extra: Whilst Nemyr was certainly an important character, being the originator of the Knights and having heavy ties to the Top God of DFO's multiverse, she's nothing more than a footnote in the grand scheme of things. Here, much like the Lost Warrior, she's given a much larger role, even making her in-person debut in any form of DFO media.
  • Anti-Villain: Nemyr isn't strictly evil by any sense of the word, but the actions she takes in trying to resurrect Carloso in the game unfortunately cement her as the primary antagonist; her manipulation of the adventurers even being called a necessary evil by herself. It's implied that she's been at this for a lot longer than it seems behind the scenes.
  • Big Bad: Of Duel.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Nemyr's plan to revive Carloso was all well and good, but she never considered the possibility that doing so would go against what Carloso himself wanted. She only realizes this when the Lost Warrior shows up in her failed attempt to revive the Great Will.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Her attempts to revive Carloso do not go as she expects and doesn't understand why the Lost Warrior was summoned instead. When she does realize why he's here...
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Her plan to resurrect Carloso goes awry when she accidentally summons the Lost Warrior in an unforseen act of defiance against Carloso's own Will. After the Lost Warrior trounces the player character, he promptly turns on her, accusing her of having her mind clouded by her extended stay within the Gate before taking back every Will she has stolen in the past, killing her in the process.
  • Light Is Not Good: Downplayed; she's a Well-Intentioned Extremist at worst who wants to bring Carloso back into play.
  • Oh, Crap!: She's initially confused as to why the Lost Warrior was summoned. Then she realizes his presence here during her attempts to revive Carloso meant she inadvertently went against Carloso's Will.
  • The Unfought: Despite being all-powerful herself, she is never fought, as the Lost Warrior fights in her stead before swiftly killing her.

     Karakas and Siusha

  • As You Know: They assume Grappler or is an adventurer that came to their town to investigate the Sky Tower's Wonder that suddenly appeared. Grappler plays along, but actually knows nothing about it until they explain it to him.
  • Long-Lived: Siusha is a long-lived individual.
  • Mr. Exposition: They explain the Wonder that appeared in the Sky Tower to Grappler or Crusader and, inadvertently, Ranger or Dragon Knight.
  • Retired Badass: Karakas was an adventurer in his youth.

Ludmilla, Natalia Sue, and Captain Luther
Three sky pirates of the Middle Ocean that appear in Story Mode. There is a Wonder aboard their airship, and they suddenly find it opening twice in one day.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Luther decides the fight happening on his own ship isn't really his problem, as long as they don't damage his ship (which they don't).

     Bill and Brand
Two hitmen of The Company assigned to work under Hitman during his mission.

  • Swiss-Cheese Security: When Hitman assigns them to guard the Sky Tower when he sneaks in to investigate the Wonder, they get distracted by Hitman turning off the Sky Tower's force field, allowing Ranger to easily sneak in.
  • Those Two Guys: Since Hitman is told relatively little about the overarching plot, these guys are here to discuss it with him.
