Just as Honkai: Star Rail has different Portrait and Warp images for its playable cast, would it be acceptable to also add the full Wish art of playable characters, so at least we have a reference as to what are the characters posing for in their Portrait art (as well as give context to certain tropes that note the differences between Portrait and Wish images)?

I'd do it myself, but I got called out for changing HSR Robin's folder image to her playable character artwork without using the Image Pickin' forum.

Man Zhai is included in Gaming's full Wish art, so that's another perk to adding such artworks, I guess (as well as Oz in Fischl's, for example, meaning his individual image currently used can be rendered redundant afterwards).

The moderators basically thought the profiles looked like an online walkthrough which is discouraged in TV tropes which focus on multi-media analysis. A lot of trimming had to be done.

With v4.1 officially out, I think now is high time to review the folders and/or pages for playable characters, namely the following proposals:

  • Remove the ability names from the biodata section and only refer to them at least once in the combat abilities paragraph in the opening description.
  • Streamline the combat abilities paragraph and remove as much unnecessary Purple Prose as possible.
  • Remove the upgrades paragraph, albeit with an option for either a hard revamp, where they are to be completely done away with, or a softer one, where they are to be incorporated into the combat abilities paragraph whenever possible (or at least remark on them at the end), albeit eliminating those that provide direct boosts (e.g., increases a certain ability's power and/or duration), limiting them to stack additions (e.g., Yanfei's C6, which adds a fourth Scarlet Seal), additional functionalities (e.g., Ayaka's C6, which periodically supercharges her charged attacks), and/or conditional boosts (e.g., the Wanderer's A1, which provides four possible boosts to his Windfavored state depending on which elements he comes into contact with).
  • Remove the gacha availability paragraph entirely.
  • Refer to the abilities in the tropes section in generic terms (i.e., "Basic Attack," "[Elemental] Skill," "[Elemental] Burst") because they are already to be mentioned in the gameplay paragraph, unless they refer to named special effects (e.g., the Raiden Shogun's Musou Isshin or Nahida's Shrine of Maya).
Please respond to each proposal ASAP for feedback so I can start editing and/or polishing in time for Neuvillette (and Wriothesley, with Furina and Charlotte on the horizon).

There are a few NPC entries I'd like removed to clean up the pages as they have minimal screen time and are not important to the overall lore even if they have applicable tropes, but I'd like to see what you guys think.

  • Mondstadt:
    • Shuyun from the TCG tutorial quest that translates the cat's (Prince) words
    • Brook and Siegfria. Appeared in Xiangling's SQ
    • Lizzie and Bernhard of Knights of Favonius
  • Liyue:
    • Dongsheng
    • Zhihua
    • The two unfilled entries under Hanfeng's Ironmongers
    • Xincheng

    • Qixing:
      • Mingbo & Qianwei
      • Jade Chamber Secretaries
      • Huixin
      • Daipai

  • Inazuma:

    • Hitomi and Hotomi of Grand Narukami Shrine
    • Kozue of Komore Teahouse
    • Kuroda, Kyouden, Rika of Yae Publishing
    • Anna
    • Possibly the Kuraiji Clan though I remember one of Alice's titles being that she is the originator of the Kuraiji art
    • Tri-Commission:
      • Ishizaki
      • Motosuke and Sue

I agree that NPCs who are not relevant to story content, whether be it Archon, Story, or World Quests, should be removed to declutter the pages a bit. After all, that was the original intent of NPC profiles from the start, and it's now getting to the point where every NPC is being added regardless of their relevance.

Mondstadt:

  • Removed Shuyun, Brook and Siegfria, as well as Sucrose's parents who are absent from all the open world, quests and events.
  • Alice is an outlander rather than a native to Mondstadt.
Liyue:
  • Hanfeng's Ironmongers, Dongsheng and Zhihua have been removed.
  • Xincheng, Ziwei & Iron Ingot have been removed.
  • Qixing: Removed all the entries mentioned.
    • Then, there are much fewer entries in Qixing page, with Ganyu to Adepti, Yaoyao to Qingce Village, Yelan to Yanshang Teahouse.
Inazuma:
  • All entries under Konda Village have been removed.
  • Removed Hitomi, Hotomi, Kozue, Anna, Asagiri and the Kujirais.
  • Posthumous Shogunate Infantrymen are to the historical characters' page.
Sumeru:
  • So-listed Academiyans are not found.

Alternatively, NPCs with few tropes can be lumped together in a shared folder, with their individual tropes placed underneath subheadings, as well as remove folders for characters whose tropes appear in other pages, in their place inserting redirects.

Thanks guys. Actually, I've been thinking of merging the historical figures pages of each nation back to the main nation's page as well. The historical pages are rather poorly maintained. Oftentimes they are simply character folders with no tropes attached as the one who edited them didn't come back to add. Even Sumeru's historical page, which is the most populated and most frequently updated, hasn't hit the 40k word mark yet. Bringing them back to the main nation page would help increase attention to those characters or at least streamline the index.

Alright I've just placed all the historical characters back into their respective nation's folders. Now I just want to talk about:

1. Snezhnaya page - it's just Childe's siblings and an unrelated NPC. I propose bringing the main Fatui page (the one with just the entries of foot soldiers) to the nation's page to populate the space until version 6.0 comes around.

2. Celestia - I think we can merge Celestia and Prehistorical (Second who Came, Seven Dragon Sovereigns, Moon Sisters) with Other Gods and rename the section/page to "Divine Beings"

The "Abyss Order" page has been redirected into "The Abyss." However, if I remember correctly the article "The" on the namespace is typically reserved for work titles and (albeit on a case-to-case basis) tropes. I'd like to propose moving NPCs to the country where they first appear (or at least mentioned to reside in), regardless of their nationality (unless they are part of an organization/faction large enough to have their own page). Examples of proposed moves include:

  • Christopher/Kurisu, who, though Fontainean by birth, is a resident of Inazuma (specifically, Ritou) and has a significant role in the first act of the Inazuma Archon Quest.
  • Dvorak, a Fontainean musician, is a prominent NPC for the 2023 Lantern Rite event (which takes place in Liyue).
  • Halsey, who, though Mondstadter by birth, played a critical role in the first act of the Fontaine Archon Quest.
  • Tsarevich, a Snezhnayan merchant and a Daily Commission giver in Mondstadt.
  • Xavier, a Fontainean engineer who is most prominently the Quest Giver for the "Tatara Tales" World Quest series, and later the "Film Notes" series in Inazuma City.

As for Atsuko, if we follow the principle that foreign NPCs ought to be listed in nations where they first appear except if they belong to a group large enough to warrant their own page, she will still be listed in Liyue, where she played a crucial role in suggesting that the Traveler ask the Crux Fleet to let them join their next trip to Inazuma, and she also appears in the first Lantern Rite event. In addition, she will only return to Inazuma after completing Ei's second Story Quest. That said, her redirect could be placed underneath the "Outside Inazuma" subheading, alongside Chiori (Fontaine).

So all of the elements have now been added. I'll leave the character folders blank for the time being since people are constantly adding new tropes to the existing ones on the other pages to make it easier to implement once the transition actually decides to happen. I'll likely add the ones with stand-alone pages inside first.

Still more feasible than sorting via nations since as of writing, there are only 3 Fontaine playable characters with just 2 more on the upcoming patch, and the conundrum that is Aloy/Tartaglia still not able to be categorized.

zero5889 Since: Jun, 2011
Aug 23rd 2023 at 10:54:19 AM •••

That'd make the whole matter more awkward. Besides, even with only Lyney and Lynette currently available, with Freminet, Neuvillette, and Wriothesley coming soon, more Fontainean characters are already in the pipeline (e.g., Clorinde, Furina/Focalors, Navia, and Siegwinne).

Besides, the Character Story pages at the Recap section are also sorted according to nominal nationality. You could change that to sort them according to element, but that'd risk breaking the correspondence with the Archon Quests and World Stories (also sorted according to nation, followed with multinational ones), to say nothing of a future plan for pages pertaining to limited-time events (also sorted according to nation, followed with those for multinational ones), and possibly those that take place in limited-time areas [i.e., the Golden Apple Archipelago, which is stated to be the remnants of mountains Venti/Barbatos displaced when terraforming Mondstadt, and the Veluriyam Mirage, found in a bottle somewhere in the Great Red Sand in Sumeru], though they could also be subsumed under national event pages.

As goes an old saying, "As above, so below."

What does the organization of the Recap page have to do with anything? Trust me, I long since put a lot of thought into it and there are several things that could go wrong if we follow the nation formula for the character sheet:

  • Displaced Characters: The greatest problem that organizing the sheet by nation poses is that some characters are bound to be left out, especially as we see with Mr Worldwide Tartaglia and visitor from a completely different game Aloy. Even before then, Kaedehara Kazuha was released before Inazuma and there is a chance that something similar might happen later in the story prior to 6.0 seeing that Dainsleif is a potential playable character.
  • Redundancy: Depending on whether the Character Page for each nation is put in its own "Playable Characters" or the "Nations of Teyvat" where the NP Cs are, its bound to be repetitive especially if placed in a Playable Characters heading since there will be two links for both playable characters and NP Cs that share the same name which defeats the purpose of separating them in the first place and makes the offset more confusing than needs to be. That problem doesn't exist in the Element Category.
  • Newly Induced Characters: As I mentioned above, whenever a new Nation is released, only 3 playable characters are available at the offset with more being slowly released. The word count for these new characters is not enough to generally warrant its own page, and even though Drip Marketing is now a thing, there’s no guarantee that something might change in between banners. Again, sorting by Element fixes this inconsistency.
  • Individual Character Pages/Spoilers: The current amount of Character Pages is kind of a mess. Especially Sumeru. This is kind of a separate issue altogether, but I'm hoping to reduce the amount of character pages to just the ones whose context might spoil the story if you read them.

As it stands, though, the status quo seems preferable (especially with the Arkhe Alignment system making Fontainean characters unique). Affiliation-based sorting of characters is a quasi-tradition dating back to an earlier major miHoYo game, Honkai Impact 3rd, and continued with Honkai: Star Rail (if you want, you could try go to the latter and propose sorting playable characters according to damage type [Physical, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Quantum, Imaginary] or Path [Destruction, Preservation, Hunt, Abundance, Erudition, Nihility, Harmony]). Besides, one can just as easily sort playable characters according to weapon type (Sword, Claymore, Polearm, Bow, Catalyst); hence, affiliation-based sorting seems a neutral compromise that also makes sense story-wise given Genshin Impact's strong focus on the Traveler's journeys through the seven Archon-states of Teyvat, each with its unique culture and aesthetic (German for Mondstadt, Chinese for Liyue, Japanese for Inazuma, Indian/Persian/Arabian/Egyptian for Sumeru, French for Fontaine, presumably Mesoamerican/African for Natlan, and presumably Russian/East European for Snezhnaya).

And it's not just the three aforementioned games with story-based sorting of characters (or at least gameplay-based sorting with some story basis). To note a few:

I'm absolutely certain that most of not all of those concepts were available since the start of the game hence why it’s easier to organize based on that criteria from the getgo. After all, Dragalia Lost sorts their characters via elements, so no reason not to do so here. Also completely unrelated but Star Rail's cast isn't exactly big enough for me to be concerned with how they're organized, but if we had to separate the playable characters from the npcs, then sorting by Element or Path can be a thing, I'm not too sure yet since people like the Trailblazer and Dan Heng possess different elements AND Paths.

Edited by eshur0s
zero5889 Since: Jun, 2011

Dragalia Lost's playable cast comes from a variety of backgrounds, many of whom are independent adventurers, unlike those of Genshin Impact, who mostly identify from one of the seven Archon-states (the Vision design should be an easy cue). And even in that other game, there are already characters whose alternate variants have different elements and/or combat specialties from their "base" forms, so IMHO a rearrangement of the character pages is feasible (a similar situation exists in its fellow Cygames gacha games Granblue Fantasy and Princess Connect! Re:Dive, hence their race- and guild-based sorting, respectively; another Cygames gacha, World Flipper, also has this issue, though like Dragalia Lost, character sorting is still-element based).

As for HSR, element- or Path-based sorting can also be awkward given the existence of two Dan Heng variants (i.e., the "base" and Imbibitor Lunae forms), to say nothing of the Trailblazer.

P.S.: I am also planning to upload images of Vision designs, including the two variants of Fontaine-issued Visions.

So what? Are you conforming to my POV or are you still gung-ho about sorting via nations? If it's the latter then you're going to have to address the various issues I found when trying to implement the idea a while back (Displaced Characters/Redundancy/Newly Induced Regional Characters/Spoilers) if you want to convince me. Otherwise we're going to have to let other Tropers decide what course of action to take because we aren't getting anywhere, and I already got approved by 2 of them.

Aug 24th 2023 at 9:48:35 AM •••

I never said anything about being gung-ho about sorting playable characters by national affiliation. I just said the status quo shall do for the time being. To address your points:

  • Aloy is an anomaly, introduced to help promote Genshin Impact amongst the PlayStation 4 player base (nowadays I rarely hear any player using her even after she was given for free), whilst there is already a page for Snezhnaya, under which the Fatui, the Harbingers, and Tartaglia are already sorted into (except Scaramouche/Wanderer, who now identifies as Sumeruan [and has the appropriate Vision design to boot] after he severed ties with them, whilst Lyney, Lynette, and Freminet all have Fontaine-issue Visions; also, Tartaglia's Vision design is similar to those of Delusions, hence it is reasonable to assume that he is to date the only known native Snezhnayan Harbinger).
  • You do not need to worry about redundancy or newly-introduced playable characters, because nowadays I am skeptical over the idea of separating them according to nationality, given that there are so few at the moment (i.e., 70 as of writing [v4.0]), hence allowing them to mingle with NPCs would have to do in the long term (and they are already indicated as playable by their folders being boldfaced and put above those for NPCs, just below the folder for general tropes, if there is any; besides, many of them are first introduced as NPCs).
  • There is already a spoiler warning on selected folders and pages with story-critical information.

Also, I checked your proposed pages, and I see a few key issues:

  • Associated Archons: Not all Vision holders of a given element belong to the country ruled by said element's Archon, much less worship them, and so far we do not even know the full names of the Pyro and Cryo Archons. In addition, according to the Raiden Shogun/Ei in her "About the Vision" line (Friendship Level 4), Archons have no influence on the distribution of Visions, instead claiming certain people obtain them through a combination of their strong desires and some other factor she is at no liberty to discuss. The only reason the Traveler's elemental styles have an associated Archon is because they can only change elements before Statues of the Seven in certain regions.
  • Gnosis Design: I doubt their design has any significance to the story to date.
  • Reactions: These are already covered in the "Elemental Fusion" trope in the main section.
  • Strengths/Weaknesses: Playable characters are only affected by Reactions, whilst strengths/weaknesses are typically applicable to enemies with elemental armor; hell, some of them are weak to the same elements they use (e.g., rifthounds, summoner-type Eremites, recovery-phase Dendro Hypostasis).

Thank you for the constructive criticism on my pages. I'll take some of your words into consideration. If I may address some of your arguments however:

  • My point still stands: Aloy is a playable character and if the purpose of reconstructing the character page is to split the playable characters from the non-playables, then she has to go with the former even if she’s irrelevant to the story and limited time only. I would've gone with the nation formula if she wasn't added.
  • Thats what I thought as well and the reason I haven't gone through with the transition at this moment since I need more input from other tropers b4 I can implement it entirely. Still, the number of characters is slowly rising every year so the transition has to happen eventually but no rush..
  • What I mean is that the individual pages that should be in the new format have to be characters who have an insane word count and would be impossible to not spoil the story without leaving any trace of their presence in the process. But a completely unrelated issue at the moment.
  • Associated Archon: Another purpose of the elemental page is to throughly expand the story and maybe gameplay properties of the associated Element, and the Archon is known to be the greatest or at the very least the representative of that element.
  • Same as above, as a Gnosis is the embodiment of an Archon's power but I see what you’re getting at since we don't know what the last 4 look like at the time. I'll think of removing it for now.
  • The last 2 are just categorizing possible gameplay quirks and thus placeholders. Can be removed if needed, but I wouldn’t recommend it for the time being.

Offering a couple minor editing proposals:

  • Switch places between a playable character's voice credits and date of introduction, in sync with that employed in Honkai: Star Rail.
  • Removing the "Associated Weapon" entry in their introductory details, seeing that they are typically limited to 5-star units, not all of which have at least one, and instead reassigning them to "Weapon Specialization" in their trope list.

Agree with the 2nd point but I don't think the 1st point is necessary (though I don't hard reject the idea).

Also I would like to ask if we need to clean up the character entries of those with Honkai Impact 3rd counterparts like Venti, Yae and Nahida. I believe based on the discussion on the Honkai: Star Rail page Alternate Self would fit them better than the current Mythology Gag or Expy?

IMHO, "Alternate Self" seems more apt for different iterations of the same character in a given work (i.e., the various parallel-universe selves of characters from HI3, and probably Scaramouche and the Wanderer here). As for parallels between Genshin Impact and the Honkai-verse games, that seems better served under "Company Cross References," while those between Honkai Impact 3rd and Honkai: Star Rail under "Mythology Gag," with "Expy" seemingly better restricted to non-miHoYo works.

Oh that makes sense. Though I do think according to the definition of Expy it's still applicable since it does mention that "They often turn up in different works by the same writer(s) or production team" and it's unambiguous that the characters concerned are based on the HI3 ones with how some notable traits are maintained while others are inverted for a fresh spin. IMO Company Cross References has the same connotation as Easter Egg, like say finding the Traveler's Windglider in the Herta SS - fun to look at but not heavily plot-relevant.

Ok, I think the Genshin character pages are in dire need of a restructure. They're becoming way too cluttered with too many NPCs under factions, locations, etc., and it's becoming a lot more difficult to sort out the playable characters from this mess. Back when Genshin released in 2020, the character pages only focused on the playable characters, and I pretty much would like to return to that standard because I believe playable characters should be pushed to the forefront while relegating NPCs in their own pages in the background.

Here's how I would go about restructuring the character pages.

  • The Traveler and Paimon
  • Mondstadt
    • Playable Characters
    • NPCs
  • Liyue
    • Playable Characters
      • Tartaglia (Temporary spot for now until Snezhnaya releases, then we can move him there.)
      • Xiao
      • Zhongli
    • NPCs
  • Inazuma
    • Playable Characters
      • Raiden Shogun
    • NPCs
  • Sumeru
    • Playable Characters
      • Alhaitham
      • Cyno
      • Nahida
      • Wanderer
    • NPCs
  • Primary Antagonists
    • The Abyss Order
    • The Fatui
      • The Fatui Harbingers
  • Other Enemies
    • Hilichurls
    • Monsters
    • Treasure Hoarders
  • Gods
    • Archons
    • Celestia
    • Other Gods
  • Miscellaneous
    • Adventurer's Guild
    • Hexenzirkel
    • Historical NPCs
    • Khaenri'ah

What do you think?

I understand and relate to your concern about the entries becoming too cluttered. However, there are more important NPCs from story quests, world quests and maybe even commissions than playable characters, and I feel the simplest way to categorise them would be to put them with their closest affiliation like the Adepti/Watatsumi/Akademiya, while removing or regrouping the folders of the less lore-important NPCs. And that's only for the living NPCs. I feel that grouping all the Historical NPCs across all nations into a single page now and for the future is not advisable either.

Another thing is that I think Tartaglia would be more suited to be placed under the Harbingers bc he's still a part of them and he left Liyue after the Archon Quests. Furthermore, there's already a Snezhnaya page that contains Teucer's and Skirk's entries, though I feel like Skirk can probably be catergorised under Miscellaneous, below Aloy's entry, since we currently know very little about her true affiliations?

Perhaps we'll need a greater discussion on how to categorise the NPCs before restructuring (perhaps the locations can be removed for the Sumeru NPCs for example).

Hmm... Alright then, let me drum up something real quick, because I feel that playable characters need to be given the spotlight on the character pages because, not only will it make it easier for fans to search for them without having to browse through a sea of NPCs, but they also form the entire bread and butter of Genshin's gacha community.

Here's another proposal:

Playable Characters

  • The Traveler and Paimon
  • Mondstadt PCs
  • Liyue PCs
    • Xiao
    • Zhongli
  • Inazuma PCs
    • Raiden Shogun
  • Sumeru PCs
    • Alhaitham
    • Cyno
    • Nahida
    • Wanderer
  • Tartaglia

How would this do? That way, it be much easier to regroup the playable characters while keeping the NPCs in the existing pages unchanged.

Personally, I would place anybody who has their own page in a single catagory, which I tried to implement on February:

Character Specific Pages

  • Alhaitham
  • Cyno
  • Nahida
  • Raiden Shogun
  • Tartaglia
  • The Traveler and Paimon
  • The Wanderer
  • Xiao
  • Zhongli

Not sure how to address the NP Cs and the factions, because everything freakishly big.

Times like these make me wish we could've grouped the playable characters via some distinctive category typing like their elemental Visions instead of "locations":

  • Playable Characters Pyro A - M
  • Playable Characters Pyro N - Z

Several other Gacha Games on this wiki have done that (i.e. Arknights, Granblue Fantasy, Fate/Grand Order, Dragalia Lost, Girls' Frontline, etc.), which is helped by the gacha games themselves grouping their characters in such way.

But since the Genshin character pages on this wiki now list a lot of the NPCs as well, it seems like reorganizing those NPCs in any way is a different can of worms that will take a lot of work.

Some factions may remain if they're integral enough, or if it's the last logical option that we can choose. Childe can be a confusing case if we grouped the characters strictly via location (One could argue to put him in Liyue since he's introduced there, but another side could put him to Snezhnaya because he's a Snezhnayan), so it might be better to group him in the Harbingers.
Regarding eshur0s's idea... putting Character-Specific Pages in their own category may also be a good choice.

I have seen CSP links being grouped in some way. For example, Characters.Resident Evil put two of their character-specific pages together on top of their main list, and on top of their navigation "menus" (as seen in Characters.Resident Evil 4).

In Genshin's case, this may help in reducing the clutter of sorts in the navigation links that we place above the character pages. Like seriously, the navigation includes text like "Snezhnaya (Fatui [Harbingers {Tartaglia}])"... It's the first time I saw a nav list with that amount of brackets/braces. In such case of having a "Character-Specific Pages" category in the nav list, Tartaglia may be listed there instead.

One downside I can think of is that it may introduce the risk of tropers artificially expanding the trope list of their favorite character to justify them having their own Character-Specific pages.

^ Actually, listing playable characters based on elemental Visions sounds really good. It eliminates the nationality bias and makes a lot of sense as far as following the gacha standard is concerned.

zero5889 Since: Jun, 2011

I dunno about sorting playable characters by element, though.

One of Genshin Impact's principal draws is the Traveler's journey through the seven Archon-states of Teyvat. Several playable characters play prominent roles within their nations' main story arcs, or Archon Quests, and with a few exceptions their personal Story Quests are typically limited to their home nation; in addition, their Visions have plating designs that designate their nominal nationality and/or patron Archon, regardless of their roots and/or allegiances. Hence IMHO it makes sense to keep them sorted according to their current home Archon-state.

Also, not all character pages for gacha games are sorted according to their elements, weapon specializations, or some other battle property. For some, lore-based classifications take first priority whenever possible, such as nationalities and/or allegiances (Genshin Impact, Honkai Impact 3rd, Azur Lane, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, FFBE War of the Visions), Servant classes (Fate/Grand Order), guilds (Princess Connect! Re:Dive), home games (Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, Fire Emblem Heroes), races (Granblue Fantasy), lore groupings (Brave Frontier), etc.

^ This is where I disagree. Since Genshin is a gacha game first and foremost, and playable characters are the only things fans care about the most, lumping them in with NPCs based on nationality is just creating a huge cluttered mess and makes it difficult to sort through them. This is why I support Dante's suggestion to move and reclassify them based on elements instead.

Maybe we can create new pages denoting playable characters by nationality, within which they are then sorted according to their affiliations as denoted in the existing pages and then in alphabetical order.

^ I would ditch the affiliations for the playable characters entirely and just sort them out in alphabetical order. They already have their affiliations listed on their profiles anyway, so the need to sort them out by affiliation is redundant. Plus, the nationality order becomes an issue when discussing Childe, which to this day, fans can't decide whether to lump him under Liyue (since he's introduced there and Snezhnaya hasn't been released yet), or Snezhnaya (due to being Snezhnayan and affiliated with the Fatui).

Tartaglia is to be counted under Snezhnaya, as his Vision plating is identical to the ones used in Delusions, which are described as manmade Visions.

As mentioned in my previous post, each Vision has a plating design that is meant to signify their holders' putative nationalities and/or allegiances—a pair of wings for Mondstadt, a diamond for Liyue, a taiko drum for Inazuma, a leaf/teardrop for Sumeru, and a military badge for Snezhnaya.

Also, the affiliation listings on character profiles are meant for internal groupings within each nation, with several characters having multiple affiliations at once.

^ Again, I disagree with your approach. Playable characters should not be grouped based on nationality and affiliation. I prefer Dante's approach of grouping them in alphabetical order based on their elements. It makes it easier for fans to search for them.

zero5889 Since: Jun, 2011
Apr 23rd 2023 at 9:10:57 AM •••

At this point there are already thousands of players who have played long enough and/or care enough for the game's plot and/or lore that they can sort out playable characters according to nationality, which is helped by their strong cultural aesthetics, such as German/fantasy European for Mondstadt, Chinese for Liyue, Japanese for Inazuma, and Indian/Persian/Arabian/Egyptian for Sumeru. Thus, I prefer a compromise where playable characters are given their general pages based on nationality (under which those with their own pages will be sorted) under a single heading distinctive from the NPC pages (general and by affiliation alike), which in turn can be strictly alphabetical or with an additional layer of subdivision based on their affiliations. IMHO, helping players keep up to speed with the storytelling elements helps with video game literacy, especially where spoilers abound (BTW, I am the one largely editing the Recap pages as of late).

On a personal note, I regret having failed to sort out characters from Alchemist Code (the precursor to FFBE War of the Visions) based on their nationalities (which also form another strong element in its story) before it shut down at the end of March.

That would most certainly do, except they can all be listed under the "Playable Characters" heading (followed by that for NPCs and then that for the lone collaboration character as of v3.6, Aloy). Each page will have the namespace "Playable Characters—[Nation]", which can then be sorted and/or divided either according to alphabetical order and/or affiliation depending on how the roster will expand.

I may also propose that the aforementioned heading can be further subdivided to create distinctions between the Traveler (and Paimon), the other playable characters, and (at most) the playable Archons, provided Venti gains enough entries to warrant his own page.

P.S.: I might also suggest that, regardless of their actual nationality, major NPCs can be sorted based on where they are first encountered unless they are part of a larger organization with its own page, in which case the they can have a folder on the general page, which contains a redirect to that for their organization. For example, Liben, a Liyuan merchant, will be listed under the Mondstadt NPC page, whereas Viktor, a Fatuus, will also have a folder in the Mondstadt NPC page that will redirect to that of the Fatui (which will be sorted under Snezhnaya).

Settled.

Now, let's move on to NPC pages. Entries within can be sorted according to affiliation unless they belong to an organization large enough to warrant their own page. There, folders on playable characters will then redirect to either their general or specific pages.

Also, NPC pages can include those from other nations who prominently appear there (e.g., Liben, a Liyuan merchant in Mondstadt; Atsuko, an Inazuman expatriate first found in Liyue Harbor; Xavier, a Fontainean mechanic first found in Tatarasuna; and Bonifaz and Nachtigal, Mondstadter merchants in Aaru Village). I mention this because a few weeks ago some Fontainean and Snezhnayan NPCs have been transferred to specific NPC pages regardless of where they first appeared. I might propose deleting the Fontaine NPC page for now, but retain that for Snezhnaya because, in addition to Tartaglia's family, the Fatui should have a heading there that redirects to its own page.

Actually if I can briefly go back to sorting the playable characters into 2 separate pages by alphabet, I feel it would be better if we grouped all playable characters without their specific pages into one page instead. I took a look at the names of the playable characters we had from each nation and basically, as of 3.7 (including Baizhu, Kaveh and Kiara):

  • Mondstadt: 19 playable characters in total, 14 with names starting with A-M, 5 with N-Z names
  • Liyue: 18 in total, 6 with A-M names, 10 with N-Z names
  • Inazuma: 15 in total, 7 with A-M names, 6 with N-Z names
  • Sumeru: 13 in total, 7 with A-M names, 2 with N-Z names

Those with their own specific pages have been removed from this count. But as you can see, most of the nation's character names are heavily skewed to one side.

Also, I have no issue adding an empty Snezhnaya first-level bullet within which Tartaglia will be sorted, both for aesthetic convenience and to anticipate future playable characters from that nation, though I would not recommend placing him under Liyue because his Vision has a Snezhnaya plating (i.e., a military badge, shared with Delusions).

So hear me out: Lets categorize the playable characters by Vision after all since this would give us a chance to assign general tropes to each element since there are recurring themes within the characters wielding them. Plus Tartaglia and Aloy wouldn't be sticking out like sore thumbs.

IMHO, we leave Aloy alone to indicate that she belongs to a different IP. And Tartaglia is to be left alone for the time being, in anticipation of future playable characters from Snezhnaya.

As for sorting playable characters, doing so by their nominal nationality seems more plausible because: 1) it helps them be synchronous with the existing pages for the non-playable characters; 2) Genshin Impact places great emphasis on the seven Archon-states of Teyvat, as evidenced by its main story arcs revolving around one nation at a time, which is helped by their strong cultural aesthetics (as of v3.6, German/Fantasy European for Mondstadt, Chinese for Liyue, Japanese for Inazuma, Indian/Persian/Arabian/Egyptian for Sumeru, presumably French/British for Fontaine, presumably Mesoamerican/African for Natlan, and presumably Russian/East European for Snezhnaya); 3) their Vision plating designs also indicate nominal nationality (as of v3.6, a pair of wings for Mondstadt, a diamond for Liyue, a taiko drum for Inazuma, a leaf for Sumeru, and a military badge for Snezhnaya); 4) there is the issue of the Traveler, who can change elements at will; and 5) with a few exceptions outside limited-time events, playable characters mostly interact with their nominal compatriots.

My proposal for the characters list would go like this: (NOTE: Entries in italic denote tentative entries, with explanations in square brackets)

Collaboration Characters

Its precisely BECAUSE of Tartaglia and Aloy not belonging to the 4 avaliable nations that I believe organizing by elemental visions is more viable at this point, since the character sheet would look very disorganized if those two are the only nation-less people in the character roster. Having a collaboration page on itself is not a bad idea, what makes it impractical is that Aloy is the only outsider to be in the game. In the Vision page itself, it wouldn't be too difficult to separate the holders by nation via Headers. Also, there should only be one Main Characters section separated from the playable and NP Cs, which at present only the Traveler, Paimon, Dainsleif and the Twin should inhabit. Anyway, I prepared a sample of what the Vision page could potentially look like.

Aloy is not meant to have to her own page, just a folder at the bottom of the characters list under the "Collaboration Characters" first-level heading to exclude her from the "canonical" characters. Besides, Tartaglia's page will be a second-level bullet point underneath a (temporarily blank) first-level bullet point for Snezhnaya's playable characters, just as the Fatui are underneath the existing general page for Snezhnayan NPCs.

IMHO, sorting characters by nominal nationality helps with video game literacy, especially with such a game as Genshin Impact that encourages players to pay attention to its story beats.

As for sorting characters by element, we'd risk separating the Traveler's different elemental affinities; also, it'd be awkward to list only one character from a nation per element page, or even none at all (i.e., as of v3.6, there is only one Anemo character from Liyue [Xiao], no Geo from Sumeru, no Dendro from Mondstadt and Inazuma [Kirara has yet to debut in 3.7], one Pyro from Sumeru [Dehya], and one Cryo each from Inazuma [Ayaka] and Sumeru [Layla]; in contrast, there are already 19 from Mondstadt, 18 from Liyue, 14 from Inazuma [15, including Kirara], and 14 from Sumeru, while in hindsight Tartaglia is a walking Early-Installment Weirdness, and Fontaine is already on the horizon.

Besides, Elemental Reactions are already covered in the main tropes pages (under Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors at the moment, though IMHO they are better served by Elemental Mixing); strengths and weaknesses are typically limited to Elemental Armor (also covered under Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors); and according to a voice line from Ei, she and her fellow Archons are actually not responsible for handing Visions.

Organizing playable characters by nation is by all means not a bad idea. The only reason it wouldn't work at the moment is because of the presence of Aloy and Tartaglia, who don't belong to the 4 present nations and I'm not against separating Aloy as a collaboration character, the problem is that she's the only one and creating a header in a character index with just her in it is not a good idea. It's better to just put Aloy in a separate page than to leave her in an index.

Also, nations not possessing a certain element isn't that big of a deal that you think it is, since that would only make the page smaller.

An earlier miHoYo game, Honkai Impact 3rd, already has its playable characters sorted by affiliation, and so does its latest game, Honkai: Star Rail, so for consistency's sake let's not stir the pot too much.

Don't even go that direction. If we're sorting purely by affiliation rather than elements or nationality, we might as well leave the character sheet alone since there is almost nothing to fix.

There is something to fix. One generally-agreed-upon proposal is to separate the playable from non-playable characters, with Aloy at the bottom to indicate that she belongs to a different IP, albeit for consistency's sake the former will be sorted based on their putative nationality (as indicated by their Vision designs), whilst the latter are to be sorted based on where they first appear (even if they are not strictly nationals).

P.S.: Speaking of the NPC pages, that for Fontaine was apparently made by a now-bounced user who unilaterally moved Fontainean NPCs there without so much as a consultation (e.g., Rhodeia of Loch, the Oceanid boss from northern Liyue; Xavier, Quest Giver for a major quest line in Tatarasuna; and Dvorak, a semi-prominent NPC in the 2023 Lantern Rite event), as well as Tsarevich, a Snezhnayan merchant and subject of a Mondstadt Daily Commission. A proposal is to remove the Fontaine NPC page and relocate the NPCs to where they first appear, whilst leaving that for Snezhnaya even as Tsarevich is to be moved back to Mondstadt (to take account of Tartaglia's family [though his youngest brother Teucer was so far the only one shown onscreen] and Skirk, a currently unseen influence in the Harbinger's life).

I guess we need input from other people on this matter since we are not going anywhere at this rate. Overall, the sorting playable characters by nation idea is flawed since that would leave Tartaglia and Aloy without pages since they don't belong in any of the 4 present nations and that's the hill I am going to die on. My current solution is to sort the playable characters by the elements since Tartaglia is Hydro and Aloy is Cryo.

Alright, since the discussion is going nowhere, I have an alternate proposal.

Keep every page as is, but give the playable characters their own sections regardless of affiliation, and ideally, put them at the top of the pages. That way, we don't have to alter the current structure of the character index.

^ This might be short term solution, but we can’t just keep the status quo forever. Both playable characters and notable NP Cs are swelling like ebola with every update so we have to split them at some point especially with Fontaine in the horizon.

Since there are no new characters in 3.8, it is in our best interest to reformat the character page during this period if at all. As things stand, I'm going to stay with the idea of organizing the playable characters by Vision/Element rather than nationality to take Tartaglia and Aloy into account while removing redundancies created by the {=NPC=}s being organized by the same criteria and implementing tropes related to the themes of each playable element as I suggested a long while back.

Is there like a Sandbox page that we could use so that disruption to the other tropers while we work on the new character index is minimal? Then we can just import the revised version when we're done

Also are we removing the pages of some playable characters with over 40k word entries (i.e. Alhaitham, Cyno, Fischl) and integrating them into the same vision element pages?

I'm not sure, I'll look into it. I already created some drafts on how the new playable character pages are going to look, so I'll import them to the sandbox if applicable.

As for the sole pages, the 3 playable Archons and the Wanderer definitely need to stay due to spoilers. Venti might need one eventually, but no rush and we should thoroughly discuss what others need to stay or not since the number of individuals in the element pages are drastically reduced to 6-12.

Looking at the character art, I am wondering whether it is still viable to use Card or Wish art (which does have special effects), given that since v1.4 (March 17, 2021) character art has been modular (starting with Rosaria), with the base Card art being added with special effects for Wish art. In addition, given the differing proportions of the full images, I also wonder whether to continue using them in full or crop them to fit the 350-pixel width restriction on images.

As a simp I very much appreciate being able to view the full character art and would prefer that over having their feet cropped out (as an example), but as you mentioned, Card and Wish art are quite similar and as long as I can see the full art I'm not too particular about the special effects, and I don't mind the differing proportions that we have now.

I failed to clarify that I meant horizontal cropping, not vertical. IIRC, judging from the Genshin Impact Wiki, full Wish images are typically 2048×1024, hence a 2:1 ratio; one solution I was thinking of is to have the raw images cropped with the height retained (e.g., 768×1024 [3:4]); as I was considering adding their Genius Invokation TCG card art, which have a more uniform proportion (420×720 [7:12]), I also failed to mention that I suggested putting constraints on the main character art for consistency's sake.

Alternatively, we can request the admin to implement a zoom function on the images (within constraints on the width of zoomed-in images, of course [e.g., 720px or 1024px]).

Should we un-spoiler lore of playable characters from Character Stories? We currently have pretty inconsistent spoiler tagging (like info from Alhaitham's Character Story 4 about his relationship with Kaveh is tagged, but info about Dori's entire reason for being the way she is from her Vision story isn't), and as of right now some of these Character Stories are important giving us a clear impression of why they are like that but may not be brought up in quests (like Heizou's vision story).

I think there are inconsistencies on the navigation bar that have gotten me confused (or probably these are just minor issues that will be fixed later...)

BTW, a few days ago, I just noticed that most of the character descriptions or lead paragraphs (the paragraphs above their trope lists) on Characters.Genshin Impact Main Characters are copy-pasted directly from the official descriptions. Unfortunately, TV Tropes somehow prohibits copy-pasting paragraphs word-by-word from other sources . There is a thread for this. From what I read there, it is not okay to simply copy-paste lengthy descriptions from Wikia/Fandom or Wikipedia:

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=14727740310A09919300&page=1

I rewrote the paragraph descriptions of playable characters already. I guess it is better to rewrite/reword the other general/character descriptions for the organizations (Fatui, Abyss Order, etc...) as well, so that they do not look like copy-pastes from the Fandom website.

Another example would be the Adventurers' Guild. Characters.Genshin Impact The Adventurers Guild has the paragraph "An organization that serves as an adventurer-for-hire service for the people and other organizations in all seven nations of Teyvat." which is exactly the same from the Fandom website (https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Adventurers'_Guild).

Maybe there are also editors who edit both TV Tropes and Fandom... But let's just reword some stuff here. IIRC, the VideoGame.Action Taimanin page got deleted by this site's mods because of copy-pasted descriptions.

Klee's mom Alice has two character folders with their own tropes. One's in Characters.Genshin Impact The Adventurers Guild and the other is in Characters.Genshin Impact Other Residents.

Preferably only one Alice folder should contain all the tropes, while the other folder would only redirect a link to the main folder. So which page/folder should contain Alice's tropes?

Edit: The tropes themselves need to be double-checked/cleaned-up as well. The Adventurers' Guild page lists Idol Singer as one of Alice's tropes, which should only apply to Barbara IMO (unless we can find info that Alice herself is an idol as well).

Adding to this: the pages are a little cluttered and I’ll be doing my best to parcel out the stuff listed that has either not been confirmed/shown in-game yet (the Current/Former adepti for example) or the entries for named NP Cs that don’t have big enough roles to constitute their own entries (like in the Fatui page). Some of these things can be added to the In General tab if necessary.

Also, as a general aesthetic rule, please don’t add headers with nothing under them. It clutters the page and makes it confusing to read.
