Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Can someone please tell me what I did wrong that got me suspended from editing and/or posting? sad

~Hingabe Sieben Your suspension is indeed for the ATT, specifically for (a) making a mountain out of a molehill and (b) lashing out at people who disagree with you.

We are of the opinion that such a minor change should not have spiraled into a discussion that long. To repeat what I recently told another user, on this wiki we care as much for consensus as we do for precise facts. You can cite three Nobel Prize-winning scientists' research in your writeup but if other tropers don't think it should be on the page then it stays off. Part of consensus-building on this wiki is recognizing and accepting when you are outvoted.

~YourEternalTroper

Word cruft is a fair point. However it is primarily unhelpful because the viewer has no way of knowing there are two links here.

Since you have seven notifiers for Example Indentation in Trope Lists, please tell us how you'd fix these examples from WebAnimation.Dead Fantasy. You don't need to be familiar with the source to recognize bad indentation.

  • Badass Normal: Hitomi is the only one so far who doesn't use her own magic. She makes up for it with enough Charles Atlas Superpower to throw chunks of building around.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • When she is introduced in Part II, Rinoa pretty much wipes the floor with Team DOA.
    • Hitomi delivers one to Tifa in the later half of Part III, with her own Materia.
      • Followed up by Hayate having his squad to finish the job, only moments later in Part V.
    • In Part IV, when Yuna summons her Aeons to help her against the Kasumi X clones, it creates a brief Hope Spot that it might turn the tide in her favor. Nope. The Aeons go down like 10-pins.

~Tropers/lifelover91 No, you were suspended for Edit warring over Zero-Context Examples. Let us discuss edit warring first so please read that page. If someone changes or removes your edit, you disagree, and you add it right back the way you initially wrote it, you have committed what we call an Edit War and it warrants suspension. You cannot add it back without agreement, either from the person who removed it or from other users.

Now where does Edit War say you can hold these conversations?

~Another Gamer I meant that choreography and lyrics/melodies are equally valid categories and can/should be separated as such:
  • Call-Back: SEVENTEEN also tends to reference their previous songs in their newer songs.
    • The choreography for some of their other songs...
      • Their choreography for "Our Dawn is Hotter Than Day" is made up of various moves from nearly all their previous dances.
      • The choreography for My My has the cheek poke from Pretty U and the falling petal hand movements of Fallin' Flower but done in reverse.
    • They tend to reference previous lyrics/melodies...
      • Lie Again has Vernon's first line in Don't Wanna Cry.
      • Fearless has Jeonghan's line after the first chorus of Fear.

Another option could be to put each song on (**) without separating by choreography and lyrics.

t it doesn't seem like something that would benefit me or my editing skills

The point of these tests is to prove to us that you've understood not just where you erred in your original edit but the rules as a whole. That if we let you go you won't just go around cluttering up the wiki. Recognizing when an example should go in its own bullet is a big part of it.

Let us try once more with these from WebAnimation.Dead Fantasy. They are a bit simpler than the Call-Back example so hopefully you are able to spot the errors. Tell us how you would modify them to fall in line with the indentation rules:

  • Dance Battler: Rinoa uses some genuine ballet moves in Part II, including arabesques and tour metes.
    • Kairi/Namine gets in on it as well in the WIP footage for Episode VI, dancing to control her keyblade-wings in a manner very reminiscent of RWBY's Penny in her singles match against Pyrrha.
  • Hammerspace: Where Yuna keeps her ether bottles in Part II.
    • Victoria's Secret Compartment: In her own games Yuna's item use animation has her pull them out of her bra, which makes sense with her Kimono from the first game,(Some kimonos do have pockets there), doesn't make sense with the super tight corset from the second. Also she noticably does reach towards her chest before a screen cut.

~Tropers/eroock — Those work. Do you have any other questions about Zero-Context Examples? Can we trust that you will write fully-contextualized examples in the future?
~Tropers/Ominae — Your suspension is for Edit warring over a link to Fridge Logic. If you disagree with a change someone has made to your edit, putting it back the way you want it to be is not how it should go. You need to come to an agreement with the deleter or the wider community. Where does Edit War say you can hold these conversations?
~Mechanicalman 450 Well, yes, seeing as I'd already spelled out what was wrong with them. That's a decent expansion of "evil" for Evil Brit. Do you have any more questions about the Zero-Context Example policy? Will you be more mindful of example context in the future?
~Type 40 — See to it that you follow that resolution. I will lift your suspension.
~Tropers/Malady There's a lesson here about making sure the stuff you add to pages follows rules regardless of where it came from.

But enough digression.

Yes, considering digression and rambly posts like that are part of why you are TLP-banned to begin with. If it is truly relevant and necessary information then you still have to integrate it in a way that follows Clear, Concise, Witty.

Alliterative Family and Shout-Out aren't the most complicated to contextualize, but those are indeed not ZCE.

~Tropers/zarpaulus — That's a solution that makes sense for me. Let's see you expand these Zero-Context Examples you added to WesternAnimation.Outer Space Astronauts instead:

~Tropers/tvtropesuser2000 You were literally told what you did wrong a couple of hours ago and I see the notification for it in your inbox. If you're not going to read and acknowledge the part of that post addressed to you, there's no point in continuing with this appeal.

~Synchronicity.

I managed to explain why these examples are PCE.

VideoGame.Super Gear Quest

  • Evil Tainted the Place: The true final level, World Core, is an underground facility infested with Khraosis. This example don't explain what Khraosis is about, and why this is the "evil" part from this trope.

Music.Coldplay

Film.The Dark Wind

  • The Brute: Larry, the henchman of Agent Johnson. This example don't explain why he is The Brute since his functions and/or actions aren't mentioned to qualify as this trope.

If not, I will refrain from adding stumps in the future.

Okay, for WesternAnimation.Outer Space Astronauts:

  • Eating the Enemy: After the cuddle puff knocks out most of the human crew Kak comes in, mistakes the puff for a snack, and simply eats it.
  • Green-Skinned Space Babe: Kak the red-skinned and scantily-clad alien girl who otherwise looks (outwardly) human.
  • Starfish Aliens: Cuddle puffs look like fist-sized balls of fluff with beady little eyes, basically Tribbles except they're sapient.

I'll keep a lid on it in the future. However, what recourse do I have in the future against derailing and noncontributing posts? For example, if I make a post in good faith and the first reply is an accusation of "having an agenda" solely because I've made edits on similar topics, even when those edits have been completely uncontested? Also, if a thread is clearly going downhill, would the proper response be posting an announcement that the thread has failed, requesting a lock, and refraining from further interaction?

For Badass Normal:

For Curb-Stomp Battle:
  • When she is introduced in Part II, Magic Knight Rinoa and Team DOA easily dispatch Team Final Fantasy with relative ease.
  • Hitomi delivers one to Tifa in the later half of Part III, using her own Materia against her. Hayate would also have his squad finish Team Final Fantasy later in Part V.
  • In Part IV, when Yuna summons her Aeons to help her against the Kasumi X clones, it creates a brief Hope Spot that it might turn the tide in her favor. Turns out, the Kasumi X clones quickly put down the Aeons with zero effort.

@Synchronicity:

If I want to launch a trope that's not mine? I'd do the following: Contribute (whether it's adding relevant examples with context or a page image) or ask permission from the trope page creator, but that's only with an active page sponsor. But if there's no active page sponsor (i.e. over two months)? Someone else COULD adopt the page, but I could if the page sponsor gave me explicit permission to do so.

The requirements for trope launching? A draft with five more 'hats' than 'bombs', be more than 3 days old, ten examples and twelve wicks, complete discussion, a 24-hour-notice and no changes a day before launch, confirm the title then launch!

And thanks for clearing up trope launching for me; I now have a better idea on how it works rather than just impulsive decisions like "oh i like it lets launch it now".

Hmm, a more complex trope then...

Amazing Technicolor Population:

  • Book Of Days: Becomes a Justified Trope in Part 16 of this fanfic describing events more than a millennium before the show's, reveals that their ponies had coat color variation matching real-life ponies', until Discord turned that into the technicolor seen in the show:
shades of grey, brown, russet, and beige, often with spots and dapples. The truth, they told me, was that the multicolored hues common today were magically imposed on the pony populace by Discord during the era of his misrule.

@Synchronicity To answer the question, what I should've done is go to Ask The Tropers and explain the issue there. If the community agrees with me, I could re-add what was removed (with the reason as to why I would be allowed to re-add it provided in the description). If there was only one person affiliated with the issue at hand, I could've just sent them a PM about how they didn't need to delete the whole section, and that they could've just gotten rid of the part that made them act (for context, there was an entry for Cursed with Awesome that Kellen Goff, but they claimed that you're not allowed to comment on someone's personal life in the tropes that cover them, the page is about people's careers).

I've seen tropeslashing elsewhere on the wiki, so I guess I must have assumed that it wasn't a big deal, when actually it is. I'll be more careful in the future. Also, I'm not entirely sure how the Zapdos thing you brought up for Pokémon Unite is a "Zero Context Example". Can you please explain that a bit more thoroughly?

  • [Optional Boss]: Zapdos is technically this, but its Golden Snitch status mentioned above means that any team that ignores Zapdos is basically guaranteed to lose.
