Note: This thread was proposed by Crossover-Enthusiast.

Staring Through The Sword is a Stock Pose for when a character holds a sword up straight, inward, and in front of their face and stares past the blade. According to Staring Through The Sword Wick Check, however, it frequently attracts ZCEs, with only eight correct examples.

Since the amount of wicks is pretty low, I think we could merge this with Stock Poses or Stab the Sky, or redirect to Sword Tropes, or disambiguate between Stock Poses and Stab the Sky. I'm not sure what Crossover-Enthusiast's original proposal was, though.

Wick check:

Staring Through The Sword

38/38

    Correct (8/38)
  1. Characters.Fire Emblem Awakening The Lords: At the end of the third chapter of the Future Past DLC. The CG has her covering her right eye with the blade of Falchion before she initiates the Awakening ritual to slay Grima.
  2. Film.Prom Night 1980: The theatrical poster shows the killer looking past a mirror shard he's holding, with a dead woman reflected in it.
  3. GranblueFantasy.Tropes R To Z: All Lumiel Knights hold their blades upright between their face during their "preparing a skill.Charge Attack" pose (best seen here). Only the males do it with their eyes open, playing this trope straight.
  4. RWBY.Tropes S To T: A quick shot of Qrow during his fight with Winter in "It's Brawl in the Family" shows him holding his weapon in greatsword form between his eyes as Winter charges at him.
  5. Sandbox.RWBY Weiss Schnee: She begins her summoning ritual by holding her sword vertically in front of her face so that she stares right through the sword as she concentrates.
  6. Thundercats2011.Tropes T To Z: Third Eye: When using the Sword of Omens' "Sight Beyond Sight", Lion-O stares through the sword positioning the hilt so the Eye of Thundera rests against his forehead, and a glowing pupil manifests.
  7. Characters.Epic Seven Cidonia: Violet's animation in his third skill has him place the sword in front of his face. Partial Context
  8. Characters.Hollow Knight Protagonists: In the official poster for the Hidden Dreams content pack, the Knight shown to be holding the Dream Nail in front of its face. Partial Context

    ZCE (22/38)
  1. Stab the Sky: In modern fencing, the salute has three steps, the first one is Staring Through The Sword, the second one is Stab The Sky. The third is Swipe Your Blade Off, but without the blood. I wanna say this is a ZCE because it just says the trope without describing the action.
  2. Swipe Your Blade Off: A variant of this with no blood finishes off the modern fencing salute: Staring Through The Sword, Stab the Sky and Swipe Your Blade Off. Same as above
  3. Awesome.Video Game Levels G To M: The next Virtual Training Simulation is set during winter with tons of ice and snow. You have to defeat all the people and at the end you have to defeat Three swordmaster demons. At the end of the level, after the fight there's this awesome cutscene of Neo Staring Through The Sword and then he barely swings the sword...everything behind him falls down. Grammar's kind of off as well
  4. Characters.Edens Zero Others: Urochla's statue is posed this way.
  5. Characters.Final Fantasy VIII: The stance he briefly adopts before executing a Finisher.
  6. Characters.Genshin Impact The Knights Of Favonius: Jean has this pose whenever she uses Dandelion Breeze.
  7. Characters.RWBY Weiss Schnee: Does this several times with Myrtenaster throughout Volume 4, considering it's the stance she uses when she practices her summoning.
  8. Characters.Star Wars Count Dooku: He salutes Master Yoda this way before they duel.
  9. Characters.Tales Of Xillia 2: In the opening.
  10. Characters. The Rose Of Versailles: At least three times.
  11. ComicBook.De Cape Et De Crocs: How the pirates salute Eusebe's rock being cast into space.
  12. Literature. The Acts Of Caine: The cover of Caine Black Knife.
  13. Manga. The Rose Of Versailles: Done at least three times by Oscar.
  14. Music.Versailles: Kamijo in the "Aristocrat's Symphony" video.
  15. MythologyGag.Granblue Fantasy Versus: As Player 1, Lancelot does a one-handed Staring Through The Sword pose in his intro, similar to his Wind version's initial artwork. It's just that he closes his eyes this time. This is quickly followed with an "armfold" pose with his swords, similar to the artwork of his "Royal Cuirass Violet" skin.
  16. RWBY.Tropes S To T:
    • When Ruby had to pick up a sword the one time her usual weapon was unavailable she did the same thing right down to an almost identical shot. Which makes sense because Qrow is the one who taught her how to fight, even if Ruby opted not to give her weapon a sword mode.
    • Weiss does this several times with Myrtenaster throughout Volume 4, and in the intro.
  17. TheNostalgiaCritic.Tropes O To S: Critic in this picture, to contrast him with Doug's innocent baby face]].
  18. Thundercats2011.Tropes P To S: The method by which Lion-O receives his vision from the Sword of Omens.
  19. VideoGame. The Matrix Path Of Neo: After the winter multi-enemy level.
  20. WebVideo.Man At Arms: Another obligatory pose, with the Sword of Omens' hilt.

    Other (8/38)
  1. Crystal Ball: In WesternAnimation.Thundercats 2011 the Sword of Omens is a hybrid of this and a Magic Mirror. Staring Through The Sword prompts the spherical cabochon Eye of Thundera in its hilt to send a vision visible in the Blade Reflection. A similar wick is on Thundercats2011.Tropes C To E
  2. Double-Sided Tropes: An index
  3. Stock Poses: An index
  4. Sword Tropes: Index again
  5. Weapon Across the Shoulder: Mentioned in the description
  6. ImageSource.Disney Animated Canon
  7. Laconic.Staring Through The Sword
  8. Trivia.Mulan: Image Source wick

If the problem is ZCE (I believe it's a valid Pre-Asskicking trope, probably not very popular), then ZCE should be elaborated and the description checked if it's missing something. I think more examples can be found if the trope gets attention.

Maybe it could be Yarded instead, or sent back to TLP if someone is willing.

Yeah, my idea was yarding or booting it back to TLP — this is a common stock pose, it just needs more actual examples.

Oh, right, forgot to mention what I mentioned in other threads...

Just a heads up, since there are two holidays coming up soon, I'm not going to hook any new crowners until January 2, and any currently hooked crowners will not be called until then. In addition, consensus will not be called via posts until then.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

I agree that this is a valid stock pose and should be yarded or sent back to TLP.

Yarding sounds good. There's usually significance for when someone makes the pose.

Staring Through The Sword, I see that it is best to be yarded.

Got the wicks except for Stock Poses because removing this makes the table wonky and I'm currently too tired to fix it.

It is, however, yarded.

Crown Description:

Staring Through The Sword has been determined to be a valid Stock Pose, but it is not thriving. Should it be sent to the Trope Idea Salvage Yard or, if someone in this thread offers to sponsor it, TLP?
