Agreed. An intentional Hate Sink with a suitably cathartic demise... not a scrappy.

I haven't played Baldur's Gate III, but didn't that game just come out this month? The Scrappy is on No Recent Examples, Please! with a six-month waiting time to ensure that examples aren't knee-jerk reactions.

TheScrappy.Sonic The Hedgehog

  • Rachel from Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) was supposed to be disliked as an Obnoxious In-Laws disliking Tom for no apparent reason. But she was unintentionally disliked as the worst aspects of the Sassy Black Woman trope, Rachel and her sister Maddie being black and Tom white suggesting she may be racist, and contributing nothing to the plot. Her reception greatly improved in the sequel as she took a level in kindness and badass as she helped Maddie rescue Sonic and Tom from the anti-villainous G.U.N., but is still divisive due to her wedding subplot lasting way longer than it has any right to be as it has no relevance outside that moment.

I created this entry after bringing up on this thread after seeing her entry was revised to remove the unintentionality. I was not sure if she was unintentionally/Scrappy hated, but this thread didn't say to cut, or reply, so I revised it. Thoughts if she (still) counts or not?

Big is already listed under Americans Hate Tingle; his overseas fanbase p much disqualifies him from full-on Scrappy.

Vester and friends Big is an entirely different character. He is very different from game Big

can you elaborate on what makes them a Scrappy, then?

ETA: if Big isn't related then why the picture of him?

He’s a massive crybaby with a negatively recived cry , he has only one joke in that he cries about froggy , some fans think he replaced King Dedede (a similar character who was a fan favourite before meta knight allegedly killed him) and is constantly shilled by the creators friends who think he is the funniest thing on the channel. Him being recently introduced in 2023 just a couple of months before Dedede’s death didn’t help.

I think that this example from Weregeek might be misuse;

  • The Scrappy: While Mark getting banned from the Changeling LARP is undeniably due to his own actions, people in the comments quickly turned against Ravenia when the situation began to escalate. Specifically, she brought her primary partner Damien to meet her other partners in a non-neutral setting, seen as an invasion of Mark's gaming "safe space", plus she had not made Mark aware of Damien beforehand. No-one let Mark off the hook for his reaction, or for getting into a poly relationship without understanding the nuances, but the consensus is that Ravenia should really have known better.

I mostly say this thanks to the Unintentionally Unsympathetic example listed below (kind of makes the above entry seem unnecessary, especially given that (The Scrappy edit) doesn't really indicate that the character is hated by a large portion of the fanbase);

  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: While it's general consensus that Mark didn't handle his dating situation well at all, Ravenia gets presented in-comic permanently as a sympathetic sunshine even though her behavior is far from flawless: No matter if she's in a perfect relationship with several consenting partners, she should have explained the situation to Mark as well before she just assumed it would be alright to go plant a kiss on him when he thought that meant she was cheating on Dustin. Also, the second she heard Mark was single again, she put the moves on him while he was obviously still hurting from his break-up and not necessarily in the best state of mind to go for something so far outside of his experience.

[up] I’d agree to the change. I question these entries on Batman & Robin

  • The Scrappy:
    • Alicia Silverstone as Barbara/Batgirl is widely considered a very poor adaptation of the character, particularly due to the change of making her Alfred's niece and contributing little to the movie beyond having a Designated Girl Fight with Poison Ivy, with Silverstone's performance being derided as try-hard and unconvincing.
    • This version of Bane has very few fans, being portrayed as a lumbering, monosyllabic, brain-dead stooge for Poison Ivy instead of the Genius Bruiser Chessmaster from the comics.
    • Chris O'Donnell as Robin also gets this with how much his character whines, especially compared to the previous movie and Burt Ward's take on the character.
    • George Clooney's Batman amongst the least popular takes of the character, with him losing all of his cool mystique and the clearly disinterested actor putting in little to no effort. Though his Bruce Wayne is a bit more favorable.

To me Bane and maybe Robin are the only ones that qualify. There’s a difference between “weaker than source material” and hated on their own

[up]Also, Scrappy requires hate by fans who otherwise like the work so I question if any count. Also all save Bane (who seems harmless in-narrative only hated for out of narrative comparisons) says the creators are hated which seem to violate hate for narrative reason and pushing to creator bashing. And this is the grey area of hated version of otherwise popular characters as opposed to consistently/widely hated. And these are canonically the same Batman and Robin from prior films so violates the consistently hated rule.

With those I'd be inclined to cut them. (Bane would only count if he's seen as unnecessary in this movie thus the other flaws dragging him down and/or it explains why his other portrayal that dumb him down don't get such backlash.)

On the subject, from YMMV.Velma:

Brought this up before, but this would only be 100% valid if she's hated by those who otherwise like this show, which I can't tell is the case given it's currently this wiki's big complaining sink. Overshadowed by Controversy might be a better fit if it's nigh-impossible for fans to talk about anything else.

Any new thoughts on the matter? Also asked Scooby Doo General.

Seven Soldiers of Victory

  • Ethnic Scrappy: Wing. Poor fellow stuck with a Gonk face and not being counted as a full member even though he showed up for every single adventure!
    • And he stopped the Nebula Man at the cost of his life. But hey, the white guys finally promoted him to full membership posthumously.

Besides bad indentation... this reads more like a Woobie entry rather than Scrappy. And I'm not sure Wing fits scrappy either, he's not really talked about enough for fans to hate or like him either way.

[up] Cut it, it really doesn't sound like an example.

I want to contest Duncan from Monsters at Work being listed. I might be biased because I personally liked him but I have also seen plenty of other people liking him, finding him an entertaining asshole and even making fanart of him (though I have admittedly seen people hating on him too). He should be moved to Base-Breaking Character at worst.

This from Yakuza:

  • The Scrappy: Jingu. While he's meant to be a Hate Sink, fans' reasons for disliking him go beyond his evil actions, namely that he's considered a weak villain compared to Nishiki and his boss fight is seen as one of the worst in the entire series.

I don't think he counts for these reasons:

  • While he is generally seen as a straightforward and uncomplicated villain, I don't think that's enough to mark him down as widely hated. I know there's some people who enjoy the fact that he's unpretentiously evil without a tragic backstory or complex motivation, in a series that tends to love both.
  • Nishiki is still very much the game's main antagonist (he's the final boss, gets more screentime throughout the game, has a much clearer character arc), so I don't there's an argument that Jingu overshadows him.
  • He is That One Boss, but I think common consensus is that Kiwami (the remake) made him a lot more difficult, and that he was fine for the most part in the original game. Regardless, I don't think a character can be considered a Scrappy for primarily gameplay reasons.

Should this be cut?

I found this on YMMV.Wizards Of Waverly Place:

  • Many fans don't understand how Alex acts so different when Mason's around, not to mention how he was a jerkass stalker in "Wizards vs. Werewolves", "killing" Juliet and effectively rendering both Justin and Alex heartbroken for the majority of Season 3. Many people who like him are either Alason shippers, or they just think Gregg Sulkin is cute. This is not helped by the fact that Juliet appeared in less episodes in season 4 (justified since Bridgit Mendler was busy doing Good Luck Charlie at the time and couldn't return until during the final episodes) and that he appeared in more episodes during this season.

He has a lot of fans in my experience. Like he's definitely a Base-Breaking Character but he's not really a scrappy in my experience.

Anyone here familiar with Carlito's Way?

  • The Scrappy: Pachanga. A flaky coward who is quick to sell his friends out for a few extra bucks. His death is all the more satisfying because of it, and unlike Carlito's it just passes by and no one bats an eye.

Feels like this character is supposed to be disliked for the audience.

[up]Cut him if he has fans. Move to Base-Breaking Character if it can be equally explained why other like him.

RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap.Anime And Manga

  • Usopp was heavily criticized by the fanbase for dueling Luffy and leaving the crew over Luffy's decision to replace the irreparable Going Merry, causing some of his detractors to bring up his relative weakness compared to the rest of the crew. Later in the arc, he adopted the persona of Sogeking to avoid getting a large bounty for attacking Enies Lobby as well as to prevent his former crewmates from noticing who he was, although only Luffy and Chopper didn't notice, and demonstrated a powerful new weapon with new techniques and far greater accuracy. Then he later apologized for his actions and rejoined the crew. Considering how Oda works, he had probably planned the story that way all along.

I'm going to say this is misuse as if they were supposed to be disliked than redeemed than never Scrappy to begin with. Any objections to that?

I wanted to clean up some entries on the Gundam page, making them more coherent to read. Here's my proposed entries for the Zeta section.

  • Katz Kobayashi is exactly as immature as you'd expect a 15-year-old in the military to be; he's reckless, gullible, stubborn, and harbors a crush on enemy pilot Sarah Zabiarov. What makes him hateable is that he never develops past this bratty characterization, even as he continues fighting in more dangerous battles in the latter half of the series. Many fans were therefore thrilled when he blacked out in the final battle and crashed into an asteroid.
  • Reccoa Londe started the series as a reliable member of the AEUG who struggles with her own personal hangups amidst the conflict. She eventually abandons her comrades, justifying her desertion by claiming that they just used her. What lands Reccoa here is her subsequent decision to join the Titans, under the command of the most blatant manipulator in the series, Paptimus Scirocco. Her hypocrisy was only sealed by her participation in mass murder on the Titans' behalf, even as she claimed that women only exist to be used and thrown away by men. Emma Sheen was right on the nose in calling Reccoa on her behavior during their final confrontation, bitterly noting that nobody would mourn someone so callous.
  • Beltorchika Irma had an uphill road to climb as she was introduced as a Flat Character Satellite Love Interest to previous series protagonist Amuro Ray, but her attitude after they hooked up left a lot to be desired. Even though Amuro only uses her as a Replacement Goldfish, she starts talking down to everyone around her and manages to irritate current protagonist Kamille Bidan. Beltorchika wises up quickly, though; she proves brave enough to film footage of a live battle and broadcast it during Char's big speech in Dakar, helping him convince the world that the Titans must be stopped.
