TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

Unlaunched and cutlist Mawkish Mistake.

Note that there’s another draft in TLP, called “There’s no monotheists in foxholes”. Not only does it suffer from No New Stock Phrases, I haven’t even mentioned this because I commented that it’s not a common phrase outside the East of the US and assumed that the OP would come up with a better suggestion.

I’ve tried to explain it several times but the OP and other tropers keep trying to tell me that it is a common phrase and I’m mistaken that nobody else knows of it just because I don’t. My next argument will be that the argument works the other way, that they think it’s common because they know of it, though I feel they might not accept that. Then I’ll bring up NNSP, I don’t know if they’ll be accepting but if they launch it with a bad name then I imagine it’s one to send right back.

Edit: they’ve changed the title.

I'm trying to preemptively suggest a better name for this trope draft before it launches (originally it was "Fully Armored Aliens") on grounds of mainting the "Clear, Concise, Witty" rule (he's rather insistent on making it "scifi"-sounding, which seems to be like undly favoring wittiness), but the draft's creator (Luppercus) is proving rather stubborn on the issue, and I seem to be the only one among the commenters who cares about this. Can I get some help? I might not be articulating my position well.

Not sure if this the right place to bring this up , but seeing as how the Trope Talk thread didn't yield me any responses, I might as well try here:

Just found Superheroes Wear Tights and noticed that for some reason it didn't have any examples on the page despite the page being created in 2011, there being no message saying not to and the page having 124 wicks in the related tab.

Looking through the page history I found this,

This is so common it would be easier to list superheroes that don't wear tights, but even those would be covered by other tropes. So instead examples should be on work pages.

,was previously on the page, but was deleted by DragonQuestZ who left this edit reason:

Okay, the real reason I put that stupid no examples message up was because I'm (still) so pissed at DC and Marvel that I don't even want to touch most of those pages, but there is no reason for me to say other's shouldn't.

Both the page history on this website and on the Wayback Machine don't go far back enough to show when the message was added so I can't confirm whether they did add it.

So should the page have examples added, or should it be left exampleless with the message restored.

I doubt that plain examples should be added to that page, a list of heroes that fit a general convention doesn't seem to be very useful. I'd rather have discussed, conversed etc. examples á la Most Common Superpower.

If anyone recalls the Sandboxes that were made a while back, they're still up at TLP Crash Rescue Tallies and TLP Crash Rescue Resolutions. It's kind of a bigger project than I for one expected, but I'll try updating them. I may restrict my time to tropes only, and if someone else wants to add works pages then that's tots fine. If anyone wants to update them on their own, I am also down with that, personally.

I'm not going to update from page 205 to the current page, since that's 40-some pages and I have a life (and full-time job). But I will bring back the tropes that were unresolved because they slipped through the cracks. Personally, I would love it if there was a way — maybe in 2.0 — to mark newly launched tropes so that they get put on a list widgit so they don't fall through the cracks.

Here are the tropes that have been brought up with no resolution since "long time ago" on page 200:

    The key to the tallies
  • c = voted to cut or said/implied this was Not a Trope, "cut for now, look into it later";note
  • sb = send back or "cut and send back" which is the same thing as this;
  • k = voted "keep" or "I'm fine with it";note
  • un = unsure, not I'm not sure but they aren't sure ("further discussion needed");
  • n = neutral, they expressed neutrality or abstained for some reason;
  • dv = didn't vote but commented or brought to our attention (please vote);
  • trs = they voted to bring this to TRS, they commented that this was too old for this thread;
  • ??? = I don't know how to count this one, I'm not sure what they voted;

The "dv" votes may double up for this first batch of lists. I don't have a separate "didn't vote" list and I'm not going through everything again lol.

"The Same, but More Specific" and "The Same, but More" don't mean cut. They could mean to send back for revision, or that you're unsure and want to know what other people think, or — yes — to cut. I ain't got time to think about what you're saying; I'm too busy in general.

[down][down] I forgot to mention that I only went to page 245 or something, but yeah, there are plenty of new tropes that need resolution...

Mawkish Mistake definitely should be sent back. The new name was decided by the OP last minute without input, and a word obscure to most of the site users will doom it to being underused.

[up][up] You forgot Monstrous Mandibles, which is currently stagnating in the Trope Description Improvement Drive thread, awaiting feedback over whether a description tweak could suffice. If that fails, we'll have to send it back to TLP.

Troper khalil91 launched Foot Fetish today. The YKTTW has not been touched for a year; when last it was active, it had 5 hats, 6 bombs, and a lot of problems in the comments that were unaddressed.

The trope page lacks any examples and the description is short, poorly-written, and... just kind of creepy.

Turns out kjabril91 was khalil91 ban evading. Bounces applied; will unlaunch.

Camp Wackyname isn't terrible, but the description's pretty brief and doesn't even mention Summer Campy, which is the main place this shows up (and the trope is even mentioned in the description there). There are also a ton of examples in the TLP comments that were never added (and the draft was 3 years old). Seems like an ok trope, but the sponsor got pretty lazy before launching.

Film.I Am Roshni is unindexed, made in the last ~5 weeks, and as a Bollywood movie, should be moved to Bollywood.I Am Roshni?

What's the reason for that namespace anyway? There aren't a lot of Bollywood movies with name overlap with other works on the wiki.

Huh, that's interesting. It's not like we have a Nollywood/ namespace, or Hong Kong Film/ or Japanese Film/ namespace even if those two are considerably more overrepresented on the wiki.

Like most things on the wiki, it grew organically. Why do we have a Manhua namespace?

Bollywood/ and Manhua/ were invented back in the time of 2012 when there were no namespace creation conventions.

I think we should probably attempt to come to a consensus on whether medium is the only acceptable namespace standard for works, with the exception of fan fiction. The problem is that we already fail there when we separate live-action and animation within film and television. So then we have to come up with an arbitrary definition of "medium" that lets us keep manga and comic books separate, video games and light novels separate, anime and TV separate, etc., while at the same time keeping Western film and Bollywood together.

Part of it is the dogged insistence of the Japanophile subculture on having its own distinct definitions and standards for literally everything, which deeply contaminated the wiki and is still poking out, making trouble.

2.0 would hopefully clear up this problem but it's not even in development yet, so we can't count those chickens.
