Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.

Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.

For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

No Celebrities Were Harmed is for obvious celebrity dopplegangers, like Rainier Wolfcastle on The Simpsons being an obvious Arnold Schwarzenegger. This example seems a little too generic for that level.

Plus the idea of an entertainer becoming a politician is a fairly common story archetype, common because it does have parallels in real life (if I recall, President Zelensky of Ukraine was an actor before becoming a politician).

I have gone ahead and removed examples of animated shock comedies from Fleeting Demographic Rule as they don't have fleeting demographics.

[up] Just link directly to the original post next time, not to another post that links to the post. Also, I don't think you need to bump it if it's still on the most recent page of the thread.

I agree that it sounds like it was meant to be uncomfortable, which would make it misuse of Fetish Retardant.

Is this example of The Chick any good?

  • Jason X: Janessa is is portrayed as the most feminine of the remaining characters in the final act. She is more of a Lovable Alpha Bitch than The Heart but things like loan clothes to Rowan and try to console a traumatized Kinsa. During the final act, she is the least combative character by far but does help out in minor ways like helping set explosive charges. When she, Rowan, and Waylander are accosted by Jason, the other two prepare to resist him but Janessa acknowledges her lack of fighting skills by saying "[N]ow basically we… we die."

[up]I believe one of the components of being The Chick is that they are the only female in the group.

Good to know. I don’t suppose you could recommend an alternate trope Now that Non-Action Guy is just for guys.

God, The Chick really needs TRS because it has more to do with being the glue that holds the team together than being really feminine. IDK if there's a replacement, but you can ask Trope Finder.

Would she work as a Support Party Member or is everyone else having superpowers absolutely required for that (the Star Wars examples imply it isn’t).

I don't think superpowers are necessary for the role, though the more I read it, the fuzzier the definition seems to be. I always thought the emotional glue that holds a team together is The Heart, and that it tends to be mostly female ... buuuuut the description on The Chick seems to indicate that The Heart is a male version of The Chick so ....

tl;dr the definition needs work

Alternately would Cowardly Sidekick work or does the larger number of characters in the group make it wrong to single her out for the trope?

Both tropes are a clusterfuck, yeah. But that's a topic for another thread I guess [lol] Should do a wick check at some point but I can't be bothered tonight.

Like I said, you might just want to ask at Trope Finder.

So back to answering the query re: Jason X example ... I'm not sure any of the tropes fit as suggested. I would be wary of taking an existing misused example and trying to wonk it into another trope. After all, simply cutting the example is a fine option in and of itself.

I would use trope finder but I’m suspended and debates on mt appeal are nearing the two week mark so I still can’t use threads like that.

This isn’t an existing trope to change or cut but one I was thinking of adding to flesh out the character page more if I get my privileges back. Since just got suspended I am trying to avoid misuse and this thread seems like the only currently available one.

Would Action Survivor work with some tweaks or does the fact that the character eventually dies rule that out?

Ah, my bad, I didn't realize you were suspended from queries, too. Well, I think right now there's no other trope to move it to, so for now I say just hold off on it and pitch it on Trope Finder later. There's no rush; I would just suggest you read through the trope pages that might fit for now and figure out their nuances, which would allow you to figure out misuse based on your own understanding of the trope and not just what people tell you on these threads. You can still ask things of course... but it never hurts to check on your own before then.

Cleaning up the Resident Evil Character pages and came across a few examples I'd like some clarification on:

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Not a single one of these monsters [referring to the Molded] appear in Village, possibly reinforcing the notion the Molded enemies seen in 7 are unique products of Eveline. Molded do not appear, but are referenced several times in Village in files and conversations so they didn't just disappear.
  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend: The very origin of [the Molded's] existence, as the Molded are more akin to a lonely child's Imaginary Friends in terms of function. Fitting, considering the true nature of the Mold's Hive Queen. Seems to be misuse, as they can definitely be seen by others. They don't seem to be treated like one but IDK...
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: A more sympathetic interpretation of [Evelyn]. While clearly gloating in her evil and throwing sociopathic temper tantrums when she doesn't get her way, Eveline was an Artificial Human who was ruthlessly experimented on and turned into a living bioweapon, completely isolated from any kind of normal life except a caretaker who views watching her as just another job. When Ethan is on the verge of defeating her, she breaks down in tears, seemingly unable to understand why everyone wants her dead. Appears to be YMMV for ACI in disguise.

From The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power:

Retroactive Recognition: Why yes, that is Benjen Stark leading the orcs and looking like an Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette yet again.

Game of Thrones came out BEFORE Rings of Power, so I don't think this counts.

[up][up]

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome requires the character to never be mentioned again. If they continue to be mentioned the trope doesn't fit.

  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend is specifically about a character who is thought in-universe to be imaginary (because most people never see them) but does exist. If this never happens with the Molded, the trope doesn't apply. Maybe could be worth mentioning under Imaginary Friend if they're analogous enough...?

  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: says "a character has been broken — physically, mentally, and emotionally — before they finally snap and blame the whole world for all the crap they have been through". So if Eveline does evil because of her anger about being experimented on, it would fit. If she does evil directly because the experiments engineered her that way, no. I did find Sympathetic Sentient Weapon, which might fit better?

[up] Retroactive Recognition is about a character's small early-career roles being noticed after they become famous. So my questions are: Is Benjen Stark a small role? Is the role in Rings of Power a major role? and Can we say the actor is now famous and recognizable?

YMMV.Splatoon 3

  • Anti-Climax Boss: The fight against the fourth boss, Big Man, is already not particularly difficult courtesy of effectively being the Phantamanta in a game much more suited for combat; simply rushing blindly can allow one to divide and conquer the boss fairly easily. Even more anticlimactic, however, if you have activated the "Get Sensor" Level 2 upgrade that allows you to track the location of objects/enemies regardless of whether you're submerged in ink or not. The sensor allows you to see through their Doppelgänger Attack, with a magenta icon marking the real one as opposed to the others having yellow icons. Thanks to this, the battle can be completed in about a minute if you're quick to spot the correct target, and even if you don't, it'll only take you about two minutes at worst. Fans speculated that this may have been intentional considering that Big Man is a Nice Guy who didn't even want to fight you in the first place.

Now that I'm reading the example, he seems to be intended to be a Breather Boss, right before the gauntlet of levels and the Final Boss with Mr. Grizz. The fact that the sensor upgrade lets you track where you are signals this to me. They wouldn't have it work on him if he wasn't intended to be an easy boss. Should I move it over to that trope?
