Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Would Turning Red be an example of Critical Dissonance? It has a Critic score of 95 while the user is 73 in Rotten Tomatoes? Would a 22 point difference matter?

73% is still a decent audience score, so probably not.

[up][up][up]Seems like a stretch, normally Meaningful Name is "A name that has a direct, barely-hidden meaning to it. The first, second/third/middle/nth, last, or full name says something primal about the character."

[up][up]Critical Dissonance trope description states that examples are not allowed for films that have not finished their theatrical run, so it's too early for Turning Red. Also, that is a fairly high user score, one which is reflected in every other "rating" I could find, so it seems that audiences do indeed like the film, if not as much as critics.

[up]Turning Red i believe didn't get a theater release and was Exclusive to Disney plus.

[tdown]"audiences liked it but critics liked it MORE" is not Critical Dissonance. The trope description says it should be a really polarized reaction.

I've observed that Critical Dissonance is misused that way. Many entries basically say "Both critics and audiences hated/loved it, but one party hated/loved it more than the other"

Also re: theatrical release: its No Recent Examples, Please! criteria is "end of theatrical run OR one month after release". Streaming exclusives implicitly default to the latter, and Turning Red has only been out three weeks.

Going to bring up the following entry on Literature - Divergent

  • Foregone Conclusion: As soon as Allegiant switches from Tris' POV to Four's, it's obvious Tris is going to die.

My assumption is that Foregone Conclusion is when the audience knows how the work will end before the work begins. However, just because the narrative switches POV doesn't mean one of the narrators will definitely die so can that be cut? Thanks.

Correct, not an example. Foregone Conclusion is when there is absolutely no doubt how the story will end, like say Titanic (1997).

Also, the YMMV page for the Divergent example has a Spoiled by the Format entry that uses near-identical wording. Since Spoiled by the Format refers to the nature of the medium of a work giving away what's going on, does the narrative switching POV count or not? Personally, I'm leaning cut but I want to know what you guys think, thanks.

Could count if the entire work has been from a single POV until that moment, and then something in the text makes the upcoming death obvious, but it's still a bit eh.

Yeah, I think the issue is that the entire series is from Tris's POV until that moment, which is a little... weird, but then again I've only read the first book and could be wrong.

Turning Red has also gotten some backlash on the sole basis of its art style, so I'd take the lower audience score with some caution.

Would this be a correct example on UsefulNotes.Commonly Misused Words:

  • A pastiche is a work done In the Style of another work. Calling a work "a sad/sorry pastiche of itself" is not correct.
  • A grand touring car is a type of sports car designed for high-speed and long-distance luxury driving, despite the initials GT being used on vehicles like subcompact hatchbacks and family sedans. Originally it was for sporty cars like Jaguar and Aston Martin that were high-performance coupes, but it's now become Have a Gay Old Time as GT is used as a generic term for "sports version". Even caravan and motorhome manufacturers such as Elddis and Swift got in on the act of using this for upmarket versions of their caravans and motorhomes.
  • Fake news does not mean news that is a spoof of real news, that's an entirely different thing, since it's a parody and doesn't intend to present it as real.

"Calling a work "a sad/sorry pastiche of itself" is not correct. "

Isn't the entire point of calling something a self parody/pistache/etc rhetorical and playing on the definition of the words?

Fake news does not mean news that is a spoof of real news, that's an entirely different thing, since it's a parody and doesn't intend to present it as real.

Language Drift applies here. Shows like The Daily Show sometimes called themselves "fake news shows" before "fake news" gained a specific connotation.

yeah i'd use "a sad pastiche of itself" in the same manner as "a sad parody of itself," a rhetorical comparison to indicate that it misunderstands the appeal of the original to the point of appearing as a mockery

Sorry I didn't check in on what was said about misuse of The Bus Came Back back on pages 769 and 770 on the very same day. Today I went ahead and removed it from The Simpsons S 33 E 15 Bart The Cool Kid as it was a very clear-cut case. It was probably meant as a one-off and if the writers hadn't been able to get the same actor back, they probably would've just made up a similar character for someone else to voice.

I hesitate to remove it from The Simpsons S 33 E 4 The Wayz We Were because that one doesn't seem as clear-cut to me now.

Is this an appropriate use? Wrote this for YMMV.Lonelygirl15:

  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The Grand Finale. It had great build-up: A Total Eclipse Of The Plot, a mysterious prophecy, the prospect of an encounter with Lord Carruthers, somebody doing something called "The Ascension". Then, during the finale, Sarah calls Jonas "the one" and that the Order needs him to fulfill the prophecy somehow, and... absolutely none of this is paid off. The eclipse, the prophecy, and the Ascension are all barely mentioned, much less explained, Sarah never elaborates on Jonas' significance to any of it, Lord Carruthers remains The Unfought, the climactic action sequence takes about three seconds and has the weak payoff of Sarah and her dad yelling at each other a couple times, and then it all ends with everybody just going home. Many fans feel this completely wasted the great setup the episode had.

From Irene Belserion's section in Characters.Fairy Tail Alvarez Empire:

  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: She clearly believed that King Toma would reject his daughter Hisui after she's turned into a mouse, much like how her husband turned on her once she started transforming into a dragon. Toma refusing to do this and tearfully proclaiming he still loves his daughter, leaves her dumbfounded and enraged.
  • Kick the Dog: Best evidenced when she turns Princess Hisui into a mouse and proceeds to cruelly mock King Thoma, questioning if he can love a "disgusting rodent", even after he offered up his life for his daughter's safety. Irene does this for no good reason other than petty cruelty, since it gains her nothing.

I previously removed those examples from the page, but were re-added again (history is here). Are these valid examples or should they be removed?

I'd like a bit of help here regarding an example on Characters. The Masked Singer UK under Chandelier's folder that concerns her performace in the episode she was eliminated in (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca1_FDujd48):

"Eek, a Mouse!!: A downplayed example. A mouse appeared during her performance."

Is this the right example or should it be Nice Mice?
