Recap / The Simpsons S 33 E 4 The Wayz We Were

Go To

Evergreen Terrace, the street in front of the Simpsons' house, is overrun with traffic because the Wayz app is giving people directions that go through that street.

Stuck in the traffic jam, Moe (Hank Azaria) sees Maya (Tress MacNeille) in another car. They rekindle their romance. Moe is very happy at first, but soon he worries he will mess it all up again.

Tropes:

  • Belated Happy Ending: Thirteen seasons out from "Eeny Teeny Maya Moe," Moe and Maya reunite and get engaged a second time.
  • Big Honking Traffic Jam: An app has rerouted drivers through Evergreen Terrace, causing a traffic jam outside the Simpsons house. Homer and Marge are attempting to have morning sex when they are interrupted by the honking outside, which Homer assumes is Marge.
  • Bland-Name Product: The Wayz app is based on the real-life Waze app.
  • The Bus Came Back: Ruth Powers and Maya return in this episode. Ruth complains that Marge hasn't talked to her in 25 years, even though she lives right next door.note
  • Call-Back:
    • When Moe and Maya reunite, footage from Maya's first appearance is shown to recap their first get-together.
    • A man who was complaining about the Simpsons in the beginning mentioned that Maggie shot a man. Maggie shooting a man was previously seen in the episode "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Professor Frink says he's going to make the Simpsons' street not exist (in the Wayz' app database) Homer asks where they're going to live.
  • Comic-Book Time: Moe says it's been years since he's seen Maya, and according to Ruth Powers, it's been twenty-five years since any of the Simpsons visited her—keeping in mind that within the continuity of the show, the Simpsons have lived in their current house for less than a decade.
  • Continuity Nod: Ned's famous hot chocolate from The Movie makes yet another reappearance as he serves it out to people stuck in traffic on Evergreen Terrace.
  • Couch Gag: Maggie's on her phone when when Abe gives her "a real toy," a castle. This leads Maggie to imagine she's a princess who is rather bored. King Homer and Queen Marge call for entertainment but nothing changes Princess Maggie's mood. So a dragon is brought in. Maggie gets on the dragon and they go on a rampage setting the town near the castle on fire. In real life, Maggie has thrown the toy castle into the fireplace.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Moe finally got the girl!
  • Episode Code Number: QABF19. The next episode is QABF20, but QABF18 is "Bart's in Jail", which is not the episode immediately preceding this one.
  • Hated by All: Unsurprisingly, the family is not very liked with their neighbors, mostly for petty reasons like Homer's pants. Unlike the last time they were against the family in "At Long Last Leave", Ned remains silent during all of this while Homer himself decides to get back in his neighbors' good graces instead.
  • Loved by All: After the family gets Professor Frink to get rid of the traffic jam, they're labeled as heroes, but ironically, Homer dislikes all the attention by being constantly hounded by adoring people. He wishes he'd be liked while alone.
  • The Man in the Mirror Talks Back: Moe's reflection tells him that women like Maya don't go for ugly guys like him. Lampshaded by Moe.
  • Negative Continuity: Ruth Powers implies that she continued to live at 740 Evergreen Terrace after becoming subject to Chuck Cunningham Syndrome, ignoring episodes like "The Bob Next Door" and "The Day the Earth Stood Cool" in which other residents temporarily moved in. Also when Maya asks Moe if he had any other girlfriends after their break-up, he says no, ignoring he met Laney Fountaine and almost married Anastasia Alekova.
  • Overly Long Gag: Lisa trying to get into the Wayz app has to get by the ridiculously long authentication tests, which get more obscure as she goes on. She is still doing it in The Stinger, and by the time she's finally in it's her bedtime.
  • Rage Against the Reflection: Moe is sick of his reflection telling him he's not worthy of love, so he smashes the bar mirror with a bat. This just breaks it into pieces, each one with a different reflection talking back to him.
  • Recursive Canon: One of the Wayz authentication tests is to identify the "Hyper-Intelligent Cartoon Characters". Lisa and Homer were two of the selectable characters.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Eeny Teeny Maya Moe".
  • Shout-Out:
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Discussed when the Homer tell Moe that if Kevin James can get a beautiful wife, so can he.
  • Wham Line: Maya's response to Moe's marriage proposal? "Yes!" Moe himself is so surprised that he automatically assumes she said no, and is elated when he realizes otherwise.
  • Wham Episode: After several years of Moe trying to make something stick with another woman (including Maya before) and failing, it looked like his self-doubt would once again sabotage him. However, this time, he proposes to Maya… and she says yes.
  • Won't Take "Yes" for an Answer: Moe is so sure Maya will reject his marriage proposal that when she says yes, he lashes out in sadness before realizing.
  • Xtreme Kool Letterz: The in-universe app Wayz and, by extension, the episode title itself.
