Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Some of the Pal Expy attributions are wrong, too. For instance, Direhowl is a dead ringer for Midday Form Lycanroc, not Mightyena. The chicken Pal claimed to look like a Cucco is just a cartoon chicken, implying that all cartoon chickens are Cucco expies.

I'm thinking of adding Crossover Cosmology to The House in the Cerulean Sea. How does this look?

  • Crossover Cosmology: Implied. The Antichrist is a major character, but there is a brief line that mentions, "nonfiction books about Greek gods and goddesses," indicating the Greek pantheon exists in this world, too.

A book on Greek mythology would not really be considered fiction even if the stories themselves are, because it's just a book on religious beliefs. It may be hard to articulate my thoughts here, but it fees more like an informative textbook about a real world mythology than a book meant to imply that the Greek pantheon is real.

This is a world where multiple magical creatures (i.e. wyverns, sprites, gnomes, Differently Powered Individuals) exist. In light of that knowledge, I’m not sure.

As written, the example only mentions the Antichrist which is Christianity. So it offers no other reason why the book would be assumed to be literally truth.

It's ambiguous enough that if it is the only evidence that the Greek gods are real, I wouldn't say it fits the trope.

I'm stuck on whether this one example should be considered Post-Release Retitle or its subtrope Market-Based Title, since it's a weird mix of both, and I can't use both, since one's a subtrope that directs to use one or the other on the supertrope's page. The toyline SuperThings was originally known as SuperZings in its original Spanish. The UK and US releases would use the name SuperThings instead. Starting with Series 6, the whole brand was changed to SuperThings, the Spanish version included.

So which trope should I be focusing on?

Considering the general silence, I should have asked about it on another forum, but there are no answers there either.

Besides, I have got another question: if a character severely fights and counters to his killer, while he's being killed, does he Face Death with Dignity or With Despair?

From AudioPlay.Horrible Histories:

  • Real Life Writes the Plot: invoked Purposely invoked.
    • Some sketches are based on true stories that were recorded at the time.
    • A young Terry Deary in the history classroom sketches being disruptive, making snide jokes at the teacher, and being annoyed about studying the subject are based on how Deary acted when he was in school. He didn't care about schoolwork because he had set his dreams on being a famous soccer player.

Is it possible to actually invoke Real Life Writes the Plot? If that part wasn't there, I would otherwise just remove them (and a wick to the trope in the Expy example), since they don't describe real life circumstances influencing the events of the production, but the "purposely invoked" part has me scratching my head.

On YMMV.Playstation All Stars Battle Royale:

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The game ended up becoming this. The biggest point of contention tends to be that, for being a Mascot Fighter in the vein of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series, there are very few characters in the roster that reflect Sony's gaming history. While characters from some of the more popular first-party franchises were present, such as Uncharted, God of War, Twisted Metal, Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank, certain third-party characters that were heavily associated with the brand such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon were not, with a fair number of characters coming from third-party multiplatform franchises better or equally associated with the Xbox brand, like Bioshock and Dead Space. Some characters even served as blatant advertisements for then-upcoming/recently released titles (such as Raiden from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and the less-popular DmC: Devil May Cry version of Dante). Gameplay-wise, Playstation All-Stars also tends to get flak: Smash Bros. fans find that the controls aren't as simple and straightforward as Nintendo's series, traditional fighting game fans already balk at Platform Fighter games, and both are unimpressed by the horribly uneven nature of the "Super Moves", which are the only way to actually KO an opponent and thus make the inclusion of traditional fighting combos feel pointless. And overall, the juxtaposition of characters from serious M-rated games with sillier characters from E-rated ones in a Platform Fighter can come across as an odd combination (though this last point becomes Hilarious in Hindsight due to Bayonetta's introduction in Smash 4 and especially so after Ultimate ended up being Darker and Edgier).

This sounds more like it's the execution of the premise that's the problem, not the premise itself. The last point about the clash between differently rated games even seems to not be true, as the entry itself admits. Cut?

[up](x7) I think Market-Based Title because the main page for Post-Release Retitle seems to be suggesting the former a Sub-Trope of the latter.

[up](x6) I'd say Face Death with Despair sounds closer, assuming the character is breaking down in despair at some point in it. However, it doesn't sound like either to me since it doesn't mention that or them accepting death with serenity.

[up](x5) I don't think that counts because "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot is Administrivia. In Universe Examples Only, which doesn't seem to be the case in the instance described.

[up][up]I think it can be cut for the reasons you pointed out.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off lists Continuity Lock-Out: "The story is easy enough to follow for a first time viewer, but the significance of Scott seemingly dying in the first episode, the character exploration of Ramona's exes and allusions to the plot of the original graphic novels will be lost on those unfamiliar with the source material."

However, previous examples like this were cut since the story is still comprehensible (and I say this as someone who only had passing familiarity with the franchise before watching the anime through). Maybe this could be better suited for that one TLP draft whose name I forgot made to combat misuse?

Came across this on the Grand Theft Auto IV page;

  • Shallow Parody: The Take Thats in the parodies and satire got a lot less subtle and tended more towards mocking specific people and shows rather than genres and stereotypes.

Granted, it was only posted a few minutes ago, so there's a chance that the troper who posted this might come back and gives examples to flesh their edit out. Should it be whited out, taken down, or is it fine as is?

Yesterday some user has deleted a YMMV entry from Helluva Boss' YMMV page, and its example version on Romantic Plot Tumor. Here it was originally appears, before the removal:

The reason why I point this out, was the reasoning for why it was deleted? "Shoehorned. Whether it has too much presence or not, there's no main plot for it to overtake or derail—it's BEEN the main plot."

As I'm seeing this weird problem, because that was not internally started for these two's romantic relationship. Where the romance between the main characters, Blitzo x Stolas, are more so initially closer to being a important minor and later kind of major B plot point, in start of the show (pilot -which is now accidentally semi-canonical, despite Word of God-, and S1 E1-2, and E5-6), and then gradually becomes as the show's B main plot point since S1 E7.

Which now leads to thinking, rather to reverted the edit, reworking a bit, or just leave was is. Neverminded that weird reasoning for the entry's removal?

[up][up]Blitzø's and Stolas romance is certainly not the main plot of Helluva Boss, Stolas doesn't even always appear. I doubt it even has a "main plot" as it's wacky hell adventures with Stolas' terrible house life being used for continuity (along other events).

The example could be written more consisely though.

StrangledByTheRedString.Western Animation

  • The Owl House: Some reviews find Luz and Amity's relationship progresses way too fast, especially regarding Amity's development from mean facade to cover up insecurities to lovable nerd. Some suspect that Dana Terrace worried the show wouldn't make it past one season and she needed to put the intended pairing onscreen with no room for people to deny it was canon while she was sure she could.

It took practically all of Season 1 for Amity to develop to that point, which doesn't seem quick. Also Luz was Has a Type established prior that explained the moment her feelings transitioned to romantic.

I'd say Strangled applies if about how quickly Amity goes from platonic to romantic. Otherwise how is too quickly being defined? (If what others arbitrarily say as opposed to a consistent rule/definition, that seems to lack the minimum objectivity even for YMMV.)

I've only seen the first six or so episodes of Helluva Boss. It did not start with a focus on Blitzo and Stolas, so the fact it's closer to a main plot now when many fans just started watching for the Black Comedy IMP antics is a sign of Romantic Plot Tumor to me.

[up] Lumity has some criticisms with characterization after their relationship started but the actual start of their relationship was paced pretty well, so I don't think Strangled counts here.

It's definitely become a much bigger focus in season 2 (the first episode of that season is all about Stolas and how he fell for Blitzo) but I still wouldn't say it's the main plot there either since it's really more about Blitzo's complicated, terrible, traumatic life and the damage he caused others. The fact that it always seems to come back to the romance is indeed a Romantic Plot Tumor since that's not what the plot is trying to be, but it constantly comes back into focus.

Following up on this. Though I decided to expand on it to clarify if the example I have in mind can work (also especially on a video one).

  • Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: High schools in Case Closed have kendo clubs where shinais (bamboo swords) are used, even when in sparring matches. This is why bogu armor is always used so that the participant/s do not get hurt when they encounter heavy strikes.
