Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

[up][up] Is the narrative indicating there is hypocrisy involved or is the entry just the fandom thinking there's hypocrisy involved? Hypocrite needs the narrative to back it up. The entry isn't clear on whether the narrative is telling us or whether fans are telling us this. It's been a long time since I've seen the film, so I can't remember it myself.

Found this on a RWBY character page for a race of beings known as "the People Pleasers". I've gone through all the indexed character archetypes and even the stock character index, too, and I can't find any character archetype that is being deconstructed here. Neither Easily Conquered World nor White Man's Burden are character archetypes, they're narrative tropes. Jaune is already an example of Heroic Wannabe for this example, which is on his own character page.

My thought is that this should really be an example of Deconstructed Trope (White Man's Burden), where it takes a straight example of the trope (the "white man" character (Jaune) waltzing into the natives' realm to successfully rescue them) and then explores just how harmful to the local population that behaviour really is.

Should I make the change and move this to the work's main page instead of the character pages?

  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the "hapless denizens who need a human hero to save them" peoples found in many portal fantasies. At first glance they seem like fragile, stupid children in constant danger who need Jaune to save them from accidentally killing themselves on a regular basis. However, it's revealed that Jaune is preventing them from Ascension due to projecting his own misunderstanding of it over their own knowledge, claiming that they're too stupid to know what's best for them and putting his own need to be the hero over their wants and needs. The constant accidents he "saves" them from are actually their attempts to escape from him, and once they succeed, he realizes that his "help" was hurting them.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

In Worm, Madison Clements is one of the bullies who made Taylor's life a nightmare. By Glow-Worm 9, she's become so remorseful over her past actions she confesses what she did to Vicky and wants to become a teacher. Does this qualify as "Post-Support Regret?"

Trying to see if this constitutes as Realism-Induced Horror for WesternAnimation.Hamster And Gretel:

The show's typically a superhero show and has the colorful assortment of villains to match, but one of them, Belle, doesn't have the powers or funny gimmicks that the others have. Instead, she just has her social media influence and video-editing skills that she uses to frame Hamster and Gretel and break them to the point where they very nearly arrested themselves, all so she can have a high follower account. It really stands out when something that's happened in the age of cancel culture and social media does more damage to the heroes than any of the other villains.

  • Biting-the-Hand Humor: While the heads of Matt Gorening and David X.Cohen show off their new show "Futurella" at Comic-Con, it suddenly gets cancelled only seconds into the intro, with Matt commenting that "Fox really streamlined the process."

Venomous Seal put this example under Take That! for this edit reason:

Fox was no longer producing the series by this point.

But Fox was still producing the show for Comedy Central, you can even still see their logo in the credits. Just to make sure, does it still qualify for Biting-the-Hand Humor?

AssPull.One Piece

  • The reveal of Luffy's devil fruit actually being the Mythical Zoan Human Human Model: Nika. There was no build up to the reveal, nor any hint that Luffy's fruit was something more than what it looked like up until that point. The only thing that had any sort of build up prior was the figure of Nika, the Sun God, which Who's who talked about in chapter 1018; then fast foward to chapter 1037, and you have the Five Elders suddenly afraid of a legendary fruit possibly awakening for the first time in 800 years. None of this was alluded to be related to the Gum-Gum fruit, given the very generic way it was presented.

This entry has gone back and forth, and I haven't been able to get a response on the Discussion page or the Ass Pull cleanup since it was readded after the last deletion (which was me, so I'd like to avoid an Edit War). This particular entry ackowledges foreshadowing, only to pass it off as generic, despite Who's-Who establishing that Luffy's fruit was important enough to get him arrested for losing it. I can't say for certain how long Oda was planning this, but it can't be called a straight-up Ass Pull.

On Characters.Pokemon The Series Ruby And Sapphire Ashs Pokemon, I think these Contrasting Sequel Main Character examples are trying to make up "broken pattern" when there was no true pattern to begin with, take a look:

For Taillow-Swellow:

  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Swellow is quite different from both of its predessesors, Pidgeot and Noctowl. Unlike those two, Swellow is the first capture Ash has in the new region, with Pidgeotto being Ash's second capture in Kanto and Noctowl being his second to last in Johto, and more notably Swellow is the first regional bird Ash catches in its first stage. Because of this, Swellow is the first bird to evolve during Ash's journey in the region he caught it (Pidgeot evolved after the Indigo League and Noctowl was already fully evolved). Swellow is also used much more often and successfully than the previous two birds in Gym Battles and especially in the Pokemon League. Because of this, Swellow becomes the standard that Ash's Flying types would typically follow up through the Kalos region.

For Treecko-Grovyle-Sceptile:

  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Unlike both Kanto and Johto, Treecko is the only Starter that Ash catches in the Hoenn region, rather than all three. He's also Ash's first bipedal Grass-type, the first Grass-type to evolve to its final evolution, the first to not know a Grass-type move when Ash caught it, and the first to never use Vine Whip or Razor Leaf.

Are these valid or not?

[up] In my opinion, those comparisons are extremely shallow. The trope requires traits that contrast with each other in a more meaningful way than just "This character has more screen time than the previous one" or "This character knows an attack that the previous one didn't". The trope description also makes it clear that it should apply to the protagonist, but the Pokémon in question, while major characters, still only have a supporting role.

Removed the sinkhole. I found this on YMMV.She Hulk Attorney At Law:

  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation: The Josh subplot following the wedding can be interpreted as either 'be wary of strange men who seem too good to be true' or else a cautionary tale directed at Jen for not being suspicious that Josh was still apparently into her after she made a spectacle of herself at the wedding - and therefore not setting such unreasonably high expectations for herself.

I have never seen anyone online call this the second Aesop. Like no one at all. Thoughts?

No, they're already friends but it's not genuine friendship in chatacter B's side. Character A doesn't know/suspect a thing about the other's intentions.

[up](x5) It sounds like it could work as Too Bleak, Stopped Caring to me, though I feel the "avert" talk will need to be tweaked since YMMV can't be playing with.

[up]From what I can tell, a requirement of False Friend is one character betraying another. However, I can imagine what you're describing possibly being a subversion.

From MiraculousLadybug.Tropes A To D:

  • Darker and Edgier:
    • Season 2 reveals a lot of details regarding the backstory of the Miraculouses and what would happen if Hawk Moth were to win. Neither are particularly pleasant.
    • Season 4 seems to border on a deconstruction, with Hawk Moth getting an upgrade into Shadow Moth and becoming a much more dangerous foe along with it, even coming close to finding out Marinette’s identity more than once.
    • Season 5 is arguably the darkest season yet, with Monarch being Nigh-Invulnerable, the Akumas of the day being stronger as a result of their new ability to receive Miraculous powers and the character focused episodes tend to be more dramatic.

This seems wrong for several reasons, including but not limited to listing three seasons out of five as being "darker".

Does this read like a valid Narm example? For Avengers (2023) - just want to check if it's stretching the YMMV too far:

  • Narm: Myrddin is a very old Welsh name, once associated with a Welsh language version of Merlin. On paper, it's an elegant, archaic name for a major antagonist with an Arthurian theme. However, Welsh pronunciation brings the y close to an English u sound, and the dd becomes a th/v sound. For readers who know both languages, he's "Murvin", which doesn't really have the same gravitas.

(My Welsh is not great, but I know enough to broadly agree with the pronunciation - dd is more often anglicised as th than v, but it's definitely that sort of sound)

[up][up] What page is that example on? I'd disagree with presenting Myrddin as "Murvin". That might be how it sounds to some people who do not speak Welsh (it can sound like "Murvin" or "Murthin" to non-speakers), but it's not going to sound like that to Welsh speakers, who are very much attuned to the difference between the "dd" and "v" sound because both sounds exist in Welsh (the "v" sound is represented by the letter "f").

I broadly agree with anyone being called "Myrddin" is going to sound narmtastic and induce "rolls eyes and wonder who'd inflict that on their kids" reactions in Welsh people (Welsh speakers and non Welsh speakers alike), but that's because of how old the name is and how much baggage is attached to it. It's hard to take it seriously as a usable real life name in this day and age. It's not going to be because of the pronunciation, however. That's like expecting a first-language Welsh speaker to giggle over "moron" being the word for "carrot" when the reality is that they'd never auto-associate it with an English word for "idiot" because their primary association will always be with a carrot. School kids learning Welsh as a second language in school, however, always dissolve into fits of giggles when they learn the word.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
