Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Noting here for posterity that someone edit warred with me on YMMV.Voltaire regarding an entry for The Woobie that applied to the real life person, breaking NRLEP. However this happened back in 2022 and the user doesn't use the site anymore. I zapped it again but wanted to talk about it somewhere.

You were right to have removed it... actually why does he even have a YMMV page? Though this is for another thread.

[up] YMMV for Music pages is permitted, but should be focused on tropes for their work, not the musicians themselves.

Does look like we might want to disambiguate Music.Voltaire (the modern American one) from Creator.Voltaire (the 19th century French one). But, again, that's for another thread...

Most examples in the Real Life section for Brainy Brunette are ZCE. Is it alright if I remove them, or do I have to mark them with %%?

    Real Life
  • Tina Fey in most of her roles.
  • Natalie Portman graduated from Harvard University and is known to have an IQ of 140. She is also an American Jew from Israel.
  • Danica McKellar, math genius.
  • Marilyn vos Savant, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records (at least, at one point) as having the world's highest IQ.
  • Due to ethnic traits, Asian and Nerdy has almost total crossover with this.
  • Hedy Lamarr, actress and inventor. Also major-league hottie.
  • Elliot Page.
  • Audrey Hepburn didn't have much in the way of formal schooling, but she was extremely well-read, could speak at least seven languages fluently, and was a talented piano player.
  • Elaine May.
  • Nino Burjanadze, a political leader in the Republic of Georgia.
  • Emma Watson is enrolled at the Brown University and is rumored to have grades rivaling Hermione Granger's - the icing to the cake is that she considers her education more important than her acting career.
  • Anne Frank, well known posthumously for the publication of The Diary of a Young Girl.

Some of them seem to be about typecasting st least but that's not really real life examples. I think there's too many brunette people and to a lesser extent smart people in the world to list all of those who are both unless it's joked about or something. Feels like it only works as a stereotype in fiction.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Hello! I hope you are doing well! It has been quite some time, so I was just wondering when we are going to start doing crowners again. Does anyone have an idea. How is the thread maintenance coming along? Thank you very much!

Been working on the sandbox. Added at least a barebones explanation to all the old Morality tropes and added everything on the Sex Sexuality and Rape tropes.

I am once again asking that if we must keep real life examples of tropes that we enforce some citation requiremnts at the minimum.

To talk about a specific example, the La resistence entry for the chinese communist resistence during the second sinojapanese war is just plain wrong and reads like it was written by someone who does not care about history and just wants to spread anti communist propagenda. Regardless of how you feel about the Chinese Communist Party now, i hope we can all agree that spreading historic misinformation is wrong and something that this website shouldn't be doing.

Like a basic wikipedia search will show you that the Chinese Communists did fight the japanese. Just look up the entry for the Hundred Regiment Offensive. The person who wrote that entry also just straight up ignores why the Chinese Communists did not engage in frontal warfare with the japanese. Its a whole lot of bullshit with zero citations.

I mean, we're already allowed to remove things that aren't true. People do it all the time. If an entire section consists of rumors or speculation, we delete it or make it NRLEP. We don't require citations because most RL examples don't need any.

Also, this is not where we discuss policy. Go here.

As for the sandbox, I'll try to check it out later and see if I can contribute at all.

To add to that - we've already got a 50 year No Recent Examples, Please! rule on La Résistance. The decision was to keep RL examples with that caveat.

As mentioned on the discussion page, if the RL example is wrong then you can either fix it yourself or take it to the fact checking thread for review.

[up][up][up]I recommend copy pasting an example if you want to discuss it. Here it is:

  • Second Sino-Japanese War saw several million men die in uniform, or bits of it, but many also died fighting the Japanese out of it. While it's true that there were communist cells in the occupied areas, these co-operated with the occupation authorities to help them root out all the non-communist ones. The Communists also refused to actually do any fighting, except for that one time when Stalin ordered them to in 1940 to save the Guomindang's hide, since they wouldn't have minded Japan winning (since it would mean them winning the Chinese Civil War by default) and wanted to build up their strength so they could start the Civil War up again later if the Guomindang survived.

Yeah, I agree with deleting it. The idea that Chinese people did not fight at all is very much Japanese imperialist propaganda and innacurate.

EDIT: Also, I don't know understand what's the point of bringing up No Recent Examples, Please! when this is about misinformation about examples that aren't recent. The No Recent Examples rules doesn't stop historical misinformation.

Going through the list to add to the sandbox, and I don't know why Curb Stomp Cushion is NRLEP while Curb-Stomp Battle, its supertrope, isn't. In theory both are too common, wouldn't you say?

Tyrant Takes the Helm should probably have real life examples cut. Most of the current list of examples comes across as complaining, especially the bit on David Zazlav, and calling real people tyrants is just an argument waiting to happen, especially since it involves discussing morality. On top of that, the Laconic specifically connects it to Reasonable Authority Figure, which is already NRLEP.

[up] I also know we've had Trump-related trouble with this trope in the past, so I'm surprised it's not already NRLEP.

I brought up Armor Is Useless awhile ago but the page still exists. Was it ever crownered? Also Inferiority Superiority Complex, a characterization trope, has a real life section and the first 3 examples are very general.

[up] If they were brought up in the past 2 months then they've not been crownered since we've discontinued crowners until the sandbox gets done. I'm working on the sandbox (I'm on Impossible, I think I'm almost halfway done), but it might be October before we start crowners again.

Is there a reason why the explanations are in notes? I think it's more reader friendly for them not to be and most indexes aren't formatted like that.

We agreed on notes because it looked cleaner (without them the pages looked like a wall of text), and because most people are only going to be looking for one trope at a time, so seeing only that trope's explanation was less visually distracting. The explanations are currently being written with the note format in mind, and to remove them would probably require many of them to be rewritten.

[up]I'm going to run through the rest of the sandbox just so we can get to crownering that.

Crazy in the Head, Crazy in the Bed is a new sex trope that says NRLEP on it (so I'm assuming it was NRLEP'd at launch), but it's never been on any NRLEP page. Permission to add this to the new sandbox?

Did you guys know that we have 2,534 NRLEP tropes? I do! Because the sandbox is finished! Once we clean it up and make it live that means we can start crowners again!

It's obviously too big to go up as is, any idea where we should set the letter breaks?

OK, I think all we need to do is add folders because there's so many items. Haven't figured out how I would split it though.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
