Saffron and Sage is fantasy/comedy webcomic written by Daniel Kelly, who also created Legend of the Hare, and drawn formerly by Sofia Lopez and currently by Carlos Ruiz.

The story follows a knight named Saffron and a talking Fox named Sage traveling together on a quest to save a prince that’s been abducted by a nymph. Our duo is quickly added to by two others: (Self proclaimed) World’s greatest adventurer Coriander and former priestess Liri. But there are many dangers before they can reach their goal. The series began October 15th, 2016 and is currently ongoing.

The comic can be found here.

This webcomic contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Saffron and Liri are the only ones who seem to get Corianders name right. Sage doesn't even seem to remember what it is.
Sage: Good thing we have the legendary adventurer... You.
  • Anachronism Stew: Despite taking place in a fantasy setting there are a few modern elements here and there. Such as Liri wearing a modern bikini at one point or the spa the group stopping at looking like a non-fantasy spa.
  • Arc Villain: Madame Botoxia is the villain of Chapter 3, Bath Time. She returns to be the villain of Chapter 7, Murder on the Moria Express.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Liri. She's on the adventure just to have a good time and is easily sidetracked.
  • Bathtub Scene: One comic features Cinnamon complaining to her robotic servant Toast while taking a bath.
  • Bait-and-Switch: One comic ends with a mysterious stranger walking through a crowd. Only for the stranger to be pushed out of the way by Coriander in the next comic as him and Liri are introduced.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Sage gets a moment like this in Chapter 3 where he frees the other members of the group moments before they're executed.
  • Biting-the-Hand Humor: Coriander notes that Cinnamon's bow looks like it was made in the SpiderForest. When Saffron asks if it's hard to get there he tells her they let anyone in these days.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Cinnamon's bow has an endless amount of arrows. Justified/Handwaved by it being a magic bow.
  • The Bus Came Back: Cassette returns in chapter 7, having boarded the train with Saffron and co. While at first it appeared to be a case of Back for the Dead, it turns out she wasn't killed after all.
  • Cat Folk: Coriander briefly runs into a cat person (With human ears and a cat body) at a bar.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Liri's initial response to finding out her friends have been kidnapped by spiders is to simply say "Neat".
  • Dynamic Entry/*Twang* Hello: The assassin Cinnamon is introduced when she shoots an arrow into Sage from up on a rooftop.
  • Edible Theme Naming: The characters in the main foursome, except Liri, are all named after spices; while Liri's name is short for Celery. There's also Cinnamon, her robot servant named Toast, and the nymph that kidnapped Prince Faunus is mentioned to be named Milk.
  • Everything's Better with Sparkles: Madame Botoxica emanates some kind of sparkling glow when she's first introduced.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Played for laughs when Sage asks Liri about the burn mark on her face.
Sage: How come you have a burn on your face
    Saffron: Sage!
Liri: It makes me look like a cool adventurer with a mysterious past. Like "Who's this cool girl and how'd she get that cool burn?"
  • Expy: Madame Botoxica has a few similarities with Ragyo Kiryuin from Kill la Kill. Namely their hairstyles, love of gaudy fashion and the fact that Botoxica was introduced with sparkles, similar to Ragyo's constant rainbow glow.
  • Extra Eyes: Madame Botoxica is revealed to have five eyes on the right side of their face. They're just usually hidden behind their bangs.
  • Fan Disservice: As mentioned below, Coriander has to share his hot springs with an elderly naked man.
  • Fiery Redhead: Saffron.
  • Giant Enemy Crab: One of the first monsters Saffron and Sage fight in the comic is a giant crab named Dr. Crabotnik guarding a a room full of valuables.
  • Giant Spiders: Subverted by the spiders at Botoxica's spa who are medium-sized and actually quite friendly. At least at first.
  • Greed: Saffron's guide in the prologue, Cassette, starts grabbing all the treasure she can when she stumbles across a room full of a treasure only to get grabbed herself by a giant crab. Even once Saffron frees her she goes right back to hoarding treasure.
  • Hard Light: Sage's attacks mostly consist of this.
  • Harmless Villain: What Cinnamon appears to be. Her only real accomplishment is shooting Sage. She's spent the rest of her time sulking in the bath and ordering her maid Toast around.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Liri's blonde and easily one of the friendliest members of the main cast.
  • He's Not My Boyfriend: Saffron gets very defensive when Sage implies that she's in love with Prince Faunus.
  • "Hey, You!" Haymaker: While Cinnamon was arguing with Coriander, Saffron uses the opportunity to punch the former of the two in the face.
  • Hot Springs Episode: Liri convinces the group to take a detour to a hot springs spa at one point.
Liri: Every adventure needs a hot springs escapade! We can all wear towels in the water for some reason. It'll be fun!
  • Humiliation Conga: Cinnamon goes through one during the Hot Cross Buns chapter. It consists of her setting an ineffective trap that Saffron and the gang, getting hit in the face with Saffron's axe and Sage's magic, attacked by gulls that mistake her for an actual cinnamon bun, and accidentally zapped by a laser from her own robotic servant.
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothing: Botoxica dresses herself and the main characters up in such clothing shortly before trying to have them killed.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: One comic sees the main cast fighting mergulls (Half-seagull, Half-fish).
  • Ms. Fanservice: Liri's outfit is quite revealing.
    • Cinnamon has gotten a bath scene and has been drawn in a bikini.
  • Mood Whiplash: One comic opens with a field mouse proclaiming their love for another mouse only for Sage to snatch up the latter in his mouth.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Coriander has to share the men's side of the hot springs with a naked old man. Thankfully, for the one shot where the audience can see his whole body there's a word bubble covering his crotch.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Sage.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Early on, Saffron and Sage pass a signpost pointing to a town called Danger. The Alt Text actually states that Danger is one of the safest places in the world.
  • Not Quite Dead:
    • The time arrow that Liri fires at Madame Botoxia isn't fatal but puts her in a death-like state temporarily. As such, Botoxia makes her return in chapter 7.
    • Cassette's death is revealed to have been a fake-out via the same means. She was stabbed with the same arrow and put into a temporary state of death so she could commit insurance fraud/
  • Playing with Fire: Coriander uses fire-based magic in combat.
  • Robot Maid: Cinnamon has a robotic maid named Toast. Although according to Cinnamon, she's actually a Golem.
  • Shout-Out: Coriander and Liri's last names are Bialystock and Bloom.
