So, what happens when you let Team Four Star, the voice acting troupe known for turning alien kung-fu fighters, vampire-hunting vampires and large-sword welding angst-buckets into high octane idiots, make a video game?
They apply it to everyone else and let them fight it out.
Welcome to the world of Super Knockoff VS, Team Four Star's first foray into video games. Up to four players can play as your favoritenote manga stars of the 1990s, utilizing magic, ninja tools, heavy weaponry, sports equipment and everything else in a Super Smash Bros.-style party game!
The reveal trailer can be seen here. Its launch trailer can be seen here.
Super Knockoff VS presents examples of these tropes:
- Astro Clone: Cosmo, the Mastermind, of Cosmo Kid is a horrifyingly glitchy Astro Boy.
- Captain Ersatz: The whole point of the game is that the cast resemble but are legally distinct from several famous anime and manga characters. The roster (so far):
- Tachibana of Tachibana: Part-Time Ninja, who's primarily based off of Naruto but physically resembles his teacher Kakashi.
- Jiro of Massar: Lost Children of Venus, who looks like Kamille Bidan and whose Massar resembles a Gundam/Mazinger Z hybrid.
- Judai of Match Champion -Rebirth!-, who's the fusion of several prominent sports manga protagonists, primarily Ryoma Echizen, Tetsuya Kuroko, and Shoyo Hinata and to a lesser extent Sena Kobayakawa.
- Driver, the Prince of Suryns, of God Machine, is basically Vegeta...that is Lanipator's Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z Abridged.
- Saito, the Stagebound Dream, of Dream Catcher, like with Judai, is a fusion of many Shojo Bifauxnen archtypes, especially Utena and Oscar. Her title also alludes to the Takarazuka Revue.
- Ace of Divine Game is Yugi Moto with Ash Ketchum's hat.
- Grappling-Hook Pistol: Saito's Recovery is a grappling hook that allows her to recover a jump if she hits a tile, or to grapple an opponent.
- Humongous Mecha: Subverted. The Massar is canonically human-sized, and its pilot Jiro is a tiny man.
- An Ice Person: Miyuki plays this up — her main attacks are all ice-based and her Limit Break blankets the arena in snow.
- Improbable Weapon User: So far, Judai plays this role, using sports equipment as his weapons.
- Limit Break: Everyone gets one and it differs from person to person.
- Macross Missile Massacre: Massar's Limit Break launches out a lot of missiles.
- Meaningful Name: There are several layers of meaning behind the game's title. Since it's a Super Smash Bros.-style game, you win by knocking your opponent off the fighting stage. It's also a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that the characters are knock-offs of famous anime and manga protagonists. There's also the combination of the two, the crew openly acknowledging that their game is a "knock-off" of Smash.
- The Resenter: Cosmo appears to be angry at the fact that while all of the other characters went onto become famous, he's been forgotten in spite of having came before all of them.
- Sailor Senshi Send-Up: Miyuki of Floating Girl Miyuki is Sakura Kinomoto with elements of Sailor Moon and a dash of Cirno.
- Show Within a Show: Each of the fictional manga, which will have their own backstories and lore expanded upon in character updates as the game nears completion.
