Actor-Inspired Element: John Cusack put a scar on his right eyebrow for Lloyd's character. He says that the story behind that is that someone threw a rock at Lloyd when he was a kid.
Breakaway Pop Hit: Peter Gabriel almost didn't release In Your Eyes when Cameron Crowe asked the studio to sent him a rough cut of the film. Gabriel approved the use of his song, but told Crowe that he was uneasy about the overdose of the main character at the end; the studio had erroneously sent Gabriel the film Wirednote The biopic of John Belushi instead.
Dawson Casting: John Cusack was 22 years old at the time filming and plays a high school senior/college freshman.
Deleted Role: Dan Castellaneta had a brief role as a teacher who tries to hit on Diane at the party, but the scene was cut out (though it's included as a Deleted Scene on the DVD).
Dueling Movies: With She's Out of Control, another high-school level comedy. However, they only dueled in the sense that they came out at the same time - Say AnythingANNIHILATEDShe's Out of Control, in both box office and critical ratings (Roger Ebert named it the best romantic movie since 1980, while giving She's Out of Control a zero star rating and putting it on his most-hated list of films.)
Producer James L. Brooks' daughter Amy plays D.C., one of Lloyd's friends.
Those Two Actors: Kim Walker (who plays Sheila, who credits Diane with motivating her enough to get into Cornell) and Lisanne Falk (who plays one of the girls who overhears Diane's call to her father at the party) were both in Heathers as two of the title characters.
Had Ione Skye turned down the role of Diane, Jennifer Connelly would have played her. In fact, Connelly turned down the lead in Heathers to audition. Elisabeth Shue also auditioned.
Rob Reiner was the first choice for James Court, but he wasn't interested in acting at the time. Crowe even considered Peter Fonda and Dick Van Dyke.
Before choosing "In Your Eyes", the Cameron Crowe commissioned The Smithereens to write a song for the film. The result was their song "A Girl Like You". It ended up being rejected for revealing the entire plot. He originally wanted "To Be a Lover" by Billy Idol.
Lawrence Kasdan was originally set to direct, but dropped out.
Creator Breakdown: Max Bemis went a little crazy during and after high school. (He's happily married to Sherri Dupree-Bemis of Eisley and off the drugs now).
Creator Couple: Sherri and the rest of Eisley helped Max record and produce Hebrews. Most of the guest vocals on the record are Eisley.
Distanced from Current Events: In 2017, Max Bemis announced he'd be retiring their 2004 single "Wow! I Can Get Sexual Too" from live performances indefinitely: The lyrics depict phone sex with a young, ambiguously underage, woman, subject matter he now finds "no longer appropriate" due to numerous allegations about musicians in the emo/punk scene pursuing young fans coming out around that time.
Keep Circulating the Tapes: All of their pre-...Is a Real Boy music. Menorah/Majora, Baseball, Junior Varsity, For Sale, and the dormroom demos are all floating around out there and pretty easy to find if you know where to look or who to ask.
As of 2013, most of the material was compiled in the 3-disc set All My Friends Are Enemies: Early Rarities.
