  • One to rapper Chamillionaire in a mail vlog:
    Matt: They see me rolling... They pooping! note 
  • In his "10 weirdest foods" video, he drops one to Silence of the Lambs while talking about fried brain sandwiches.
    Matt: Perhaps you'd like a nice Chianti with this one, Clarice.
  • The 10 Most MIND-TWISTING Paradoxes of All Time! starts out with the theme from Doctor Who. Matt then says "Allons-y!" note , the 10th Doctor's Catchphrase on Doctor Who.
  • In one of his Q&A videos, he got the question "Do you like big butts?" from a fan. He answered, "Yes. And I cannot lie.". This is a reference to the phrase "I like big butts and I cannot lie" from the song Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-A-Lot.
  • In The Best Worst Pick-up Lines, Matt gives a shout-out to Harry Potter, by referring to the vagina as "[the] Harry Potter".
  • 10 Predictions about the Future That Were Hilariously WRONG starts out with Matt coming in from the TARDIS, a time-travel device on Doctor Who. He then comments, "You know, you'd think we'd have time machines by now."
  • 10 MIND-BLOWING Video Game Theories! begins with Matt emerging from the Pokeball from Pokémon. He then says, "And suddenly... a wild baldo appears!", note  a reference to the phrase "And suddenly... a wild X appears!" from Pokémon.
  • In Triumphant Return!, Matt compares how he had to search for the iPhone 4 so he could buy it to searching for the Holy Grail. He then adds that he had to cross a bridge and confront a troll to get to the store, which a group of knights in Monty Python and the Holy Grail had to do to get the Holy Grail. The video then cuts to a clip of a troll asking Matt 3 questions, which the troll in Monty Python and the Holy Grail also asked the knights.
    Troll: What is your favourite colour?
    Matt: What? I just want to get to the store.
    Troll: What is your name?
    Matt: I just want to get to the store to get the phone...
    Troll: What is the airspeed velocity of a swallow?
  • In Triumphant Return!, Matt shouts, ''MCNUGGET RAGE!" with a green filter, a reference to The Hulk, who is green and has rages.
  • In Text the Pope!, Matt's first video, Matt says, "Welcome to the show that doesn't even have a name, but that's OK, because we don't need roads where we're going! I mean names, names where we're going. Names." He then says, "Where we're going, we don't need roads." in a deep voice. This a reference to the same line from Back to the Future.
  • He gives one to The Bible in 20 Reasons Why NOT to Be "In Da Club", by comparing holding out your drink at a club to Moses parting the Red Sea.
  • In 20 Easter Facts!, Matt says, "In case you thought the contrary, Good Friday is not a Rebecca Black song.", referencing Rebecca Black's song Friday.
  • In Mark Zuckerberg Eats Goats!, Matt buys a chair that, to his surprise, does the Chewbacca roar whenever it rolls.
  • In 20 Valentines Day facts, Matt talks about Sex Panther, and says, "60 percent of the time, it works every time", a reference to the same line from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
  • In My Job Isn't a "Job", Matt says, "Everyday I'm hustling!" in the same tune as "Everyday I'm shuffling!" from the song Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO.
  • In The 10 WEIRDEST Superstitions in the World!, Matt talks about how Argentinians believe that saying the name of Carlos Menem, their former president, is bad luck, but can be counteracted by grabbing your left breast or left testicle, depending on your sex. He then says that it's too bad that Harry Potter wasn't Argentinian, because he could have avoided the fiasco involving Voldemort's name by grabbing his testicle.
  • Matt alludes to The Bible in The 10 Most MIND-TWISTING Paradoxes of All Time! by comparing modern-day people building ships to Noah.
  • In How to Start off 2014 Right!, the TARDIS, a time travel device on Doctor Who, flies outside of Matt's house.
  • In 500 MILLION!!!!, Matt says, "Show me the money!", a well-known Catchphrase from Jerry Maguire.
  • In The Stinger of 500 MILLION!!!!, a fan commenter says that Matt looks like Brucie from Grand Theft Auto IV.
  • In Triumphant Return!, Matt talks about a man who copyright-flagged 2 of his videos. He says that he's not allowed to say the man's name, and refers to him as "He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named". This is a reference to Voldemort, who is called "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" in Harry Potter.
  • In The A.D.D Test, Matt says that he and boring tasks go together like Mario and Luigi, like Bert and Ernie, and like Batman and Robin; all of whom are Heterosexual Life-Partners from Super Mario Bros., Sesame Street, and Batman, respectively.
  • In 28 Things I've Learned In 28 Years!, Matt makes a reference to Bilbo's birthday speech in The Lord of the Rings.
    Matt: Friends! Subscribers! Trolls! Today is my one hundred and eleventieth birthday! [Beat] Oh, wait, no, that's The Lord of the Rings.

  • In Q&A With Matt #4, Matt says "I like trains", and explains that it's a reference to the "I like trains" kid from the ASDF Movie series.
  • In Matt's "pilot episode", he reenacts the famous pitch-shifted "beloooow" from =3.
  • In "20 Haunting Halloween Facts", Matt gives a Take That! to people who play World of Warcraft by saying that they have unibrows, have hairy palms, and leave the dead only in search of food. The image he uses to demonstrate this is one of a Basement-Dweller who plays World of Warcraft from the South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft".
