YMMV.From The New World - Win Back the Crowd: A meta-example for Satoru's seiyuu Yūki Kaji. While Kaji's career was never in danger, he DID attract a lot of criticism from anime viewers for his performances as the leads in Guilty Crown and Accel World. Kaji's tour de force portrayal of Satoru, however, recified his career for the fans (or at least, is well on his way to being redeemed).
YMMV.Akame Ga Kill - The Scrappy: You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who likes Prime Minister Honest as a great villain. While hating him is an Intended Audience Reaction, the hate he actually gets is not for the reasons he's meant to be hated for, but rather for how over-the-top, one-dimensional, nonthreatening and downright annoying of a villain he's depicted as being. Basically he gets the fictional character equivalent of X-Pac Heat: he's supposed to be a villain who the audience hates and wants to see get his comeuppance, but instead they just want him to go away and stop wasting panel space that other, better villains could've used.

Complaining

YMMV.John Laurinaitis - X-Pac Heat:
1. Marks and smarks alike despise Laurinaitis for his spotty record as a Real Life talent scout, rather than just being a Heel. Unlike say, Paul Heyman (a man of dubious moral compass who nonetheless cuts an amazing promo), there was no redemption for Laurinaitis due to his stock character, his nonexistent charisma, and constant botching of words...along with his annoying voice and relying on listing his job title every night. His very existence is proof that WWE still doesn't understand (or is indifferent to) the difference between good heat vs. cheap heat. (See: Michael Cole.)
2. Even marks, who normally watch wrestling as if it were real and hate heels solely based on what they did onscreen, simply hate Laurinaitis because they find him boring and believe he is making the product boring.
3. Long before that, as one half of the Dynamic Dudes (a pair of skateboarding wrestlers). When they received a face push by having manager Jim Cornette betray them for an opposing heel tag team (The Midnight Express), the audience cheered Cornette.
CatharsisFactor.Non Video Game Examples: John Cena, who has been pushed to the top of the WWE so much and so often that many are sick of him, getting utterly annihilated by Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2014.

Wrestling, not complaining

YMMV.Koji Kitao - X-Pac Heat: Kitao was possibly the first example in NJPW history not counting Takeshi Kitano. Trying to make a hero out of a man who had been kicked out of sumo for allegedly striking an elderly master and his wife was Crazy Enough to Work at first, but when it was clear Kitao was not interested in giving good matches (which he may got away with as heel, but clearly not as a face), people started booing him nonstop and just demanding him to go away.

PlayingWith.Japandering- Justified: Alice is a White-Dwarf Starlet or Former Child Star who's desperate to get back in the limelight, but has been on the receiving end of X-Pac Heat in her home country for her antics.
Heartwarming.Diamond Dallas Page: Sean Waltman (he of X-Pac Heat fame) has also credited DDP with helping him get clean, sober, and healthy.
Crowd Chant
1. "Die, ___, Die!", if someone has done something truly heinous...or is just that intolerable.
2. "You deserve it!" after a crowd favorite has won a title (or appears to be about to), or when a heel or an extremely hated performer is humiliated.

Other

YMMV.Jackass - X-Pac Heat: Chris Pontius and Steve-O got it when they appeared on WWE Raw, to the fact people squealed in delight when Umaga attacked the latter. Johnny Knoxville, however, got a better reaction by 2022 in promotion for Jackass Forever thanks in part to being part of an enjoyable angle with Sami Zayn, even pulling one of the better celebrity matches in the company's history at WrestleMania 38 against Zayn. Not sure if this should go in complaining folder (squealing in delight at a real person getting attacked? Ugh.)
