YMMV / Jackass

Go To

  • Broken Base: The Terror Taxi. Some find it one of the greatest and most outrageous Jackass bits ever filmed, while others have found it overly mean-spirited towards Ehren. Comments on the video where Steve-O is talking to Ehren about some of the bullying he had taken supports the latter.
  • Critical Dissonance: Most of the films except Jackass Forever got mixed reviews from critics, but they had a very positive reception from audiences.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Poopies became a breakout star of Forever and curried a lot of favor among fans of the original series, who praised him for fitting in so well that he could have been passed for an original cast member.
    • Rachel Wolfson can also be considered this to a lesser extent, due to her being the first recognized female Jackass member, some saying she should have participated in more stunts.
    • In the MTV series, a woman by the name of Stephanie Hodge had participated in a few stunts and pranks on the show (most prominent appearance was when she played the nurse in the Spermathon episode), and if she had continued, she possibly would have been considered the first female Jackass, but unfortunately she had to quit after a on-set injury nearly paralyzed her.
    • In a bizarre example, fans really enjoyed The Pontiusaurus (a Godzilla-like kaiju that shows up in the opening skit of Jackass Forever, literally Chris Pontius' penis painted like a lizard and "puppeteered" on a soundstage of miniature buildings). Many fans liked the lizard's strange yet Ugly Cute appearance, some fan art, and even a few official merch, appeared with that character, including a limited edition skateboard deck signed by Chris Pontius.
  • Guilty Pleasure: The show is basically 30 minutes of guys hurting themselves for our, and their own, entertainment. Even Roger Ebert, despite giving the first movie a "Thumbs Down," admitted to being kind of fascinated by it.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • In light of Ryan Dunn's death:
      • Any car/vehicle stunts he participated in.
      • In the DVD commentary of the first movie, Johnny Knoxville makes fun of his poor driving skills.
      • At the end of "Golf Cart Antics" in the first movie, one of the crewmembers declares "Dunn can't drive for shit!"
      • The "Son of Jackass" scene at the end of the first movie, which is meant to depict the cast, including Dunn, as 80-year-old men.
      • Weezer's "Memories," as the official ending song for Jackass 3D. It was initially more of a Heartwarming Moment for the cast and crew to be able to make the film years after the second movie.
    • A stunt in 2.0 involving Ryan and Bam being dragged by a horse became this when a documentary revealed Ryan had received a life-threatening clot from it that left him absolutely miserable, and never really got better until the third movie started filming in 2009.
    • In the season 1 DVD's commentary, an obviously drunk Steve-O jokes, "Hey guys, I think I might be drunk, I better go to rehab." Steve-O eventually ended up actually going to rehab to deal with his alcoholism, among other substance abuse problems.
    • During the Steve-O: Demise and Rise documentary, April Margera comments on Steve-O getting kicked out of the MTV building for a few hours during the 2008 24-hour MTV takeover to promote the launch of jackassworld.com, saying "If you get thrown out of a Jackass thing, that's bad." Years later, the same thing would happen to her own son, Bam, when he was fired during production of Jackass Forever after failing to maintain sobriety.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The whole cast of Jackass manage to send Steve-O to rehab when he had a problem with drugs. His sister, Cindy, even said that the cast did something his family couldn't do. To this day, Steve-O is still sober and living a better life.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Of course...
Bam: Please, God, don't let there be a Jackass 3!
    • In "The Making of Jackass: The Videogame" (one of the special features on 2.5), the cast is briefly shown playing their own game seated on what looks to be a double-decker couch.
    • An episode of the MTV series featured a friend of Knoxville getting a nasty pimple popped, which can be funny when one considers pimple popping videos are somewhat popular online.
    • In a commentary for the first movie, Knoxville dresses as his grandpa character Irving Zisman for a series of pranks, and Steve-O mentions that this character could have his own movie. In 2013, this ends up happening with Knoxville releasing the film Bad Grandpa.
  • Ho Yay: The gayness of the show, especially when it comes to Chris Pontius and Johnny Knoxville, the latter of which practically became a gay idol.
    • Lampshaded in a deleted scene — Bam warns the audience that the Dickhouse note  logo (a rainbow) will appear before homosexual scenes.
"Look away. CAUSE WE'RE GETTIN' GAY."
    • Bam later corkscrews into Wee Man's crotch, who was wearing a wig. Yeah.
    • The first few minutes of the intro to Jackass 3D consist of groin attacks/petting and ass-slapping in gay costumes set to the Dickhouse logo.
    • During the "Barrel Surfing" sketch in 3.5, Pontius says that barrel surfing is better than sex and Steve-O responds it depends on who you're doing it with. At that point, both of them look directly at Bam.
    • One instance of "Pontius playing baseball with his dick" had Bam slam into his crotch face-first.
    • The music video they made for Karazy is this.
    • If that wasn't enough, there's that supermodel-parody photoshoot they had for Rolling Stone, all huddled together... naked.
    • At one point in the third movie, Dunn was literally holding Bam's penis while he was peeing.
    • Practically any time Chris and Steve-O are together some Ho Yay is bound to happen, but especially in the Gumball 3000 episode (where they were stuck in the backseat together for five days and passed their time with such activities as "Jaguar Gymnastics," AKA them climbing on each other half-naked). Ho Yay was also a staple of the humor on Wildboyz, and at one point on the show they even kissed (of course, afterwards, Chris immediately claims that they didn't really mean to kiss, and Steve-O leans over the side of the boat to rinse his mouth out).
      • Even more so behind the scenes. It's never mentioned in the episode itself, but in the DVD commentary and in interviews, Chris and Steve-O mention that they spent much of the Gumball trip jacking off together, even making a competition out of it.
      • An interview on the old Jackass World website had Chris reveal that on the Wildboyz Russia trip, him and Steve-O were both very drunk on a bus ride, and Steve-O thought it would be a fantastic idea for a "stunt" to kiss Chris's dick... and then actually did it. Unsurprisingly, it never actually made it into the show.
    • In Jackass 4.5, it's revealed that while filming the opening credits for Forever, Knoxville had to adjust Pontius's testicles by hand, which, over course, has Pontius completely unfazed. He says that he would gladly do it again if needed.
      • During the "dick ping-pong" making-of, while Dave and Poopies have their pants down and their plexiglass-flattened penises are linked together to make a ping-pong table, Rachel suggests that they maintain eye contact to "sync," which they gladly do... and the stunt is a success.
  • Memetic Badass: Everyone. The amount of stunts they've participated in and survived gives the whole crew this status.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Hi, I'm [X], and welcome to Jackass!". Explanation
    • It is not quite uncommon for people to dub the show's theme "Corona" over people doing dangerous and/or downright suicidal stunts.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Despite the show showing a warning before every episode that indicates nobody should imitate the stunts performed in the show, there have been cases of people (mostly kids and teenagers) imitating the stunts (and some of them actually died because of that).
  • Nausea Fuel: Considering the point of the show, it's to be expected, but...
    • In Jackass The Movie, they give us Paper Cuts, in which Ryan Dunn inflicts paper cuts in the webbings of Knoxville's fingers and toes, and Steve-O's mouth too. Everyone has experienced a paper cut here and there, so everyone can feel every little cut happening. It got so bad that the cameraman passes out during filming and drops dead.
    • Hands-down, the most disgusting one ever was the tail end of the horse scene in Jackass Number Two — a scene so bad that it made a cameraman and Steve-O vomit on set and Knoxville admits that he almost vomited and he never vomits. Chris Pontius drinks horse semen. It was even blurred out in the theatrical version. There, now do you still wish you wanted to know that?
    • Jackass 2.5 reveals they also splashed it on a cameraman. The container was washed out and replaced with water, mind you, but it still disgusted the rest of the crew.
    • Every skit involving Dave England taking a dump: from having a shit on a display toilet bowl in a hardware store, to shitting on a miniature bathroom, up to 3D's "poo volcano." They are about as shitty as they sound, that the cameraman almost always vomits during the skits.
    • The climax of Jackass 3D — Steve-O is strapped into a porta-potty filled with all kinds of shit (literally) and flung high into the air. The cameras get covered in shit, there's a shit shower, it was so disgusting that nearly everyone puked.
    • The Sweatsuit Cocktail. Preston works out vigorously while wrapped in plastic wrap, and his resulting sweat (taken lovingly from his crotch and ass crack) is funneled into a cup. Which Steve-O then drinks. Remember Lance Bangs, the man who vomited during England's poop-encrusted adventures with a hardware store, a dollhouse, and during the horse scene? This scene causes Lance to throw up on his own camera.
    • England eats the ingredients of an omelet, then proceeds to vomit it back up. He then takes said vomit and cooks an omelet, which he eats. During the segment, Johnny Knoxville wears a Hazmat Suit. It's for humor value, but you kind of get where he's coming from.
    • England eats horse shit in the second film, with his major complaint being that it was too dry. It makes Bam vomit on camera.
    • The Fart Mask. Steve-O wears an astronaut style glass helmet with a funnel connected to it into which Preston Lacy farts. This causes Steve-O to vomit into the helmet. At the end, it is revealed that Preston actually shit into the funnel and the turd is clearly shown. No wonder Steve-O vomited - that would make anyone sick!
    • Pig semen in the fourth film. Chris decides to drink it, and it is later dumped at England during the Boar-Kake stunt.
    • Also in Forever, Ehren's "cup test" skit. Every single blow earns a flinch from the audience. By the end, his genitals have faced such serious damage that his testicles are practically ripping away from his body, causing many audience members to dry-heave.
    • In 4.5, Zach Sashimi. After hiding sushi in his fat rolls and wrapping himself in plastic, Zach exercises to work up a sweat, and the rest of the crew has to eat the sushi. Only Rachel manages to eat a bite without gagging, while the rest are left puking or dry-heaving at the smell and taste, especially Steve-O, who eats a piece hands-free from Zach's ass. Lance also vomits at this.
  • Never Live It Down:
    • Some people would have you believe Bam was a crybaby who could dish out punishment but not take it. In actuality he only ever really balked at the riot mine, and any time he got locked in with snakes, and in the latter case he's having visible PTSD attacks. When it's stuff like the High Five he tended to think it was hilarious.
    • Danger Ehren was always the Butt-Monkey of the group, but no one on the cast or the fanbase has allowed him to move past the humiliation of the elaborate Terror Taxi, which starts with a fake kidnapping and ends with pubic hair. His interviews with Steve-O on Steve-O's Wild Ride consist of more ribbing at his expense.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Fatlip from The Pharcyde appears in an amazing slide down a subway escalator.
  • Paranoia Fuel: All the Cast learned over time to always look over their shoulder because even during interviews, they know they are not safe from a prank or two.
  • Periphery Demographic: a notorious part of the show's fanbase were children despite the show being rated TV-MA (though the first episodes were rated TV-14).
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Jackass Forever. The first movie had a Rotten Tomatoes score of 49% and a Metacritic score of 42. Number Two, 3D, and Bad Grandpa were in the 60% range on RT (which is merely "Fresh"), and the 50-60 range on Metacritic. Forever, on the other hand, is Certified Fresh with 87% with a Metacritic Score of 74.
  • Ugly Cute: Some fans have this reaction to the Pontiusaurus due to it's silly appearance (as long as they aren't repulsed by the fact it's a penis painted like a lizard, that is).
  • Unexpected Character: Be real, who expected Beavis and Butt-Head to show up to make a special intro for Jackass 3-D?
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Sure, the show is about people doing stupid and dangerous things for laughs but the show is rated TV-MA (though the first episodes were rated TV-14) and the films have more explicit content such as nudity. This didn't stopped many children from watching it (even some of the guest stars in Jackass Forever admit watching the show as children).
  • X-Pac Heat: Chris Pontius and Steve-O got it when they appeared on WWE Raw, to the fact people squealed in delight when Umaga attacked the latter. Johnny Knoxville, however, got a better reaction by 2022 in promotion for Jackass Forever thanks in part to being part of an enjoyable angle with Sami Zayn, even pulling one of the better celebrity matches in the company's history at WrestleMania 38 against Zayn.
