Basic Trope: A (maybe washed-up, maybe not) celebrity is hard-up for cash, and does a commercial in a foreign country, usually (but not always) Japan.
- Straight: Alice does a low-budget Dada Ad in Japan for money, because she is not working on any major projects at this time.
- Exaggerated:
- Alice has not been a recognizable name in her home country for years, but regains popularity as a result of these ads.
- Alice appears in a TV series or movie that's made in Japan.
- Downplayed: The ad is a high-end commercial for a high-end (or at least well-known) product
- Justified:
- Alice needs money, but is not working on any projects in her home country.
- Alice is a White-Dwarf Starlet or Former Child Star who's desperate to get back in the limelight, but has been on the receiving end of X-Pac Heat in her home country for her antics.
- Alice believes there's No Such Thing as Bad Publicity, but her manager thinks differently; ads that are unlikely to be viewed by people in her home country are an acceptable compromise.
- Alice is world-famous, and she's trying to maintain visibility in Japan when she doesn't have anything going on there for a while.
- Inverted:
- Sakura does an ad in America that she wouldn't be able to do in Japan.
- Alice is more popular in Japan than in her home country, so she will do odd commercials in her home country, but not in Japan.
- Subverted: The ad turns up on YouTube.
- Double Subverted:
- This was not the original plan, and Alice does not receive advertising revenue on the YouTube video.
- Fortunately for Alice, no one actually recognizes her in the video and/or it gets overshadowed by another viral video.
- Parodied: Alice Hates the Job, Loves the Limelight.
- Zig Zagged: ???
- Averted: Alice does no advertisements abroad.
- Enforced: Money, Dear Boy
- Lampshaded: ???
- Invoked: After a scandal involving Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll, and a stint in rehab, Alice wants to get her career going again, but is having trouble finding work.
- Exploited:
- Alice uses the ads to gain a work visa in Japan to live there.
- Or to gain a new audience.
- Defied: Alice decides that the best thing to do for herself and her career is to get out of showbusiness altogether.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
