Recap / Simple Samosa Episode 1 "Sumo Momo"

Go To

"Sumo Momo" originally premiered on May 14th, 2018 alongside the eleven episodes directly following it.

The episode begins with Samosa waking up, getting ready for the day, and then going to his room to admire Sumo Momo, his favorite wrestler. He then watches a commercial for a wrestling match featuring Sumo Momo taking place in his home town of Chatpata Nagar, and Jalebi, Dhokla, and Vada visit him from the outside of his house to remind him of the match.

While on their way to the wrestling match, Samosa tells Vada the story of when he defeated two Sumo Momos. Dhokla and Jalebi catch on to the fact that the story is not true and call Samosa out for lying, but Vada believes him.

When they make it to the wrestling stadium, Vada provokes Sumo Momo by saying Samosa could beat him. Samosa is surprised to learn that he's the challenger fighting Sumo Momo thanks to Vada suggesting he be the challenger, and it doesn't take him long to realize that Sumo Momo is way stronger than he is; he thus ends up being defeated by him 93 rounds in a row. In the 93rd round, Sumo Momo attacks Samosa hard enough to cause the tip on the top of his head to crack slightly... causing him to go into a fit of rage and beat up Sumo Momo like a madman, allowing him to win the match. To celebrate his victory, Samosa takes a selfie with Dhokla, Jalebi, Vada, and Sumo Momo.

The episode ends with Vada recounting his version of the match between Samosa and Sumo Momo to others and Samosa himself practicing his wrestling moves in his room, which is now decorated with pictures of him and a banner reading "THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN A SIMPLE SAMOSA".

"Sumo Momo" contains the following tropes:

  • Ass Kicks You: During the wrestling match, one of Sumo Momo's many attacks is to simply sit on Samosa, flattening him.
  • Berserk Button: Sumo Momo cracks the tip on Samosa's head. Needless to say, Samosa does not take it kindly.
  • Bizarre and Improbable Ballistics: There is no way Samosa should be able to bounce as much around the room as he does when Sumo Momo launches him into the air during round 93.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Samosa tells Vada the story of when he encountered two Sumo Momos and successfully defeated them. Dhokla and Jalebi aren't fooled by the story, but Vada believes it.
    • At the end of the episode, Vada recounts the fight between Samosa and Sumo Momo to others. In his version of the story, Samosa seems to be able to attack Sumo Momo easily right from the start. Once again, Dhokla and Jalebi catch on to the fabrications made to the story.
  • Bond One-Liner: A non-fatal example. After beating Sumo Momo at the wrestling match, Samosa makes the joke that "Hey, I'll give you one tip. Never mess with my tip, okay?" since he doesn't like how Sumo Momo cracked the tip of his head.
  • Bubblegum Popping: One of the two little momos rooting for Sumo Momo throws a paper airplane into the mouth of the other little momo, popping a bubblegum bubble he was blowing. The second momo isn't amused and promptly beats the first one up.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: Samosa's eyes are visible in the dark underside of the chair he was sitting on when he physically melts from the shock of realizing he's going up against Sumo Momo.
  • Character Title: The episode is named after the wrestler Sumo Momo.
  • Company Cross References: The episode's basic plot, as well as several of its plot beats - namely, that both feature a main character musing about a sumo wrestler and being made to fight said sumo wrestler by a friend who assumed they wanted to have a wrestling match with them, and both feature a character going into a rage and defeating the sumo wrestler at the end - are similar to the Mickey Mouse (2013) episode "Tapped Out".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The weak Samosa faces the strong Sumo Momo. The results are predictable until Samosa goes mad over Sumo Momo cracking the tip on his head.
  • David Versus Goliath: The weak Samosa fights the strong Sumo Momo.
  • Death Glare: Sumo Momo throws Vada onto the ground for cheering for Samosa, and then proceeds to give Samosa himself a hard, angry stare.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: After several rounds of being the "undefeated champion" of the wrestling circuit, Sumo Momo is finally defeated by Samosa after being cracked in the head tip gives him enough energy to effortlessly beat up the wrestler.
  • Dog Pile of Doom: When Samosa tells the story of how he defeated two Sumo Momos, the accompanying visuals end with an army of Sumo Momos appearing and forming a dog pile on him, followed by Samosa punching his way out of the dog pile.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Cham Cham has much lighter-colored glasses here than in later episodes.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • Samosa's tendency to tell exaggerated tales about himself is established when he recounts the fake story of how he once defeated two Sumo Momos.
    • Vada's inability to tell fiction from reality is established as well, as he believes Samosa's story to the exact letter and is the one who convinces the arena to let him fight Sumo Momo.
  • Eye Pop: Sumo Momo's eyes pop when Samosa appears next to him as a red-colored demon in Vada's retelling of their wrestling match.
  • Fireball Eyeballs: Samosa's eyes turn into flames when he notices his tip has cracked.
  • Flexing Those Non-Biceps: When Sumo Momo demonstrates his strength by flexing his muscles, those muscles morph into the shapes of shooting cannons. By contrast, Samosa's muscles pop when he flexes them.
  • Funny Bruce Lee Noises: When round 93 approaches, Samosa makes fighting poses and noises before attacking Sumo Momo. Sumo Momo sucks him into his chest and launches him into the air.
  • Interchangeable Asian Cultures: Yes, in a show that happens to be Asian itself. The commercial Samosa watches for the wrestling match with Sumo Momo confuses several Asian cultures with each other. Specifically, it says that Sumo Momo comes from the shaolin temple of Shin Sha Shu (Chinese), on top of him being a momo (Nepalese food) and similar to a sumo wrestler (Japanese).
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: At one point while watching the wrestling match between Samosa and Sumo Momo, Dhokla covers his eyes with his hair.
  • Medium-Shift Gag: When Samosa goes into a rage after his tip is cracked, his anger is punctuated by live-action imagery of samosas boiling in a pot.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Samosa shows no mercy when he beats up Sumo Momo over him cracking his tip.
  • Oh, Crap!: Samosa, upon realizing that he's the challenger going up against Sumo Momo, can't help but make a shocked expression and physically melt under his chair.
  • Pro Wrestling Episode: The episode is about Samosa attending a wrestling match and fighting Sumo Momo.
  • Pro Wrestling Is Real: There's no indication that Sumo Momo's wrestling antics are staged, and the pain Samosa feels is very real (if still goofy and cartoony).
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Samosa's pupils go red as he gives Sumo Momo a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Ring-Ring-CRUNCH!: The episode begins with Samosa being woken up by his alarm clock, which he then throws onto a wall, causing it to break and land in a box of broken alarm clocks.
  • Roar Before Beating: After seeing his tip has been broken, Samosa lets out a loud, angry shriek that lasts for several seconds before beating up Sumo Momo.
  • Running Gag: Throughout the match between Samosa and Sumo Momo, an ice cream cone woman holds signs indicating the current round in the fight. Every time she is seen, she melts more and more; by round 93, she's melted enough that she has to be carried by paramedics.
  • Skewed Priorities: Apparently Samosa cares more about Sumo Momo than a man he leaves completely crippled on the sidewalk, ignoring the latter and just going to the wrestling match instead.
  • Squashed Flat: One of the things Sumo Momo does to Samosa is to squash him flat and fold him into a paper airplane.
  • Sumo Wrestling: Sumo Momo is meant to resemble a sumo wrestler, and has sumo-like clothes to match. However, he's not actually seen using many sumo wrestling moves during his wrestling match with Samosa, so the sumo theme seems to be purely aesthetic.
  • Thundering Herd: When Samosa recalls the time he (never actually) defeated two Sumo Momos at once, a whole bunch of Sumo Momos come running after him, complete with them making a big cloud of dust, and form a dogpile on him.
  • Title Drop: A visual example. The banner hanging in Samosa's bedroom at the end of the episode reads "THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN A SIMPLE SAMOSA".
  • Trampoline Tummy: Vada uses Dhokla's tummy as a trampoline at the beginning of the episode when he is talking to Samosa from outside of his house.
  • Underdogs Never Lose: Samosa is extremely weak compared to Sumo Momo, leaving him practically no chance to win the wrestling match... until Sumo Momo cracks the tip on the top of his head, causing him to beat up Sumo Momo and win the match.
  • Wet Cement Gag: One of the gags seen during Samosa and Sumo Momo's fight is that Samosa pours cement onto the wrestling arena and uses a watering can to wet it, causing Sumo Momo to get stuck in it. Samosa laughs at him, but the scheme backfires when Sumo Momo gets one foot out of it and kicks Samosa with cement on his foot.
  • Wheel o' Feet: Samosa's legs are represented by circular spinning shapes at one point when he is trying to run from Sumo Momo.
