Recap / Phineas And Ferb Wizard Of Odd

Go To

Phineas and Ferb's house cleaner knocks Candace unconscious after she was reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and she dreams of being transported to an Oz-like world with a lot of familiar places. She must follow the yellow sidewalk to Bustopolis to get the Wizard to help her bust her brothers!

Tropes

  • Absurdly Long Stairway: Candace insists on taking the yellow stairs to the Wizard rather than her brothers' fun slide. By the time she gets to the top, she is out of breath.
  • All Just a Dream: The episode is actually a crazy dream Candace has after getting knocked out when Phineas, Ferb and the gang wash the house.
  • And You Were There: The cast is all in Wizard of Oz roles, bar Phineas and Ferb.
    • Candace and Perry act as Dorothy and Toto.
      • Dorothy and Toto themselves also appear when their house crushes Doofenwitchnote  while he is singing his song.
    • Baljeet is a nerdy scarecrow who wants to be cool.
    • Jeremy is a tree who takes the place of the tin man, and wants to be a real boy.
    • Buford is Lion-Tiger-Bear Guy who takes the place of the cowardly lion and claims to want nothing.
    • Doofenshmirtz is the Wicked Witch—sorry, Warlock.
    • Isabella is the Good Witch with the Fireside Girls as the munchkins, or the Patchkins.
    • Major Monogram is a fairy for some reason.
    • Mom is the Wizard.
    • Suzy briefly appears at the beginning as the Wicked Witch of the East.
    • Stacy also appears as an owl.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Candace and the Scarecrow come across the Tin Man, Candace recognizes him from the book and immediately goes about looking for the oil can... until one of the talking trees turns out to be played by Jeremy and Candace immediately forgets about the Woodsman, inviting him instead.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: The gang rescue Candace from Doof by pretending to be an evil witchnote  makeover service. Doof falls hook line and sinker.
  • Blah, Blah, Blah: Candace reluctantly starts reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz like this "Blah blah, Dorothy, blah blah, Kansas", but then her interest piques when she gets to the part about the cyclone.
  • Body Horror: The brief shot of the red boots literally growing into Candace's legs.
  • The Cameo: The Talking Zebra briefly appears at the beginning of Candace's dream.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: When Lion-Tiger-Bear Guy unzips Jeremy's tree costume, Jeremy exclaims that he is finally free... and in his underwear.
Lion-Tiger-Bear Guy: Yes. Yes, you are.
  • Brick Joke: When Candace meets the Patchkins, one of them expectorates in front of her and proudly proclaims, "I have saliva." Later, a terrifying beastbog does the same thing.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Credits Gag: Dan Povenmire is credited for the voice of "Doofenwitch", but the word "witch" is crossed out and the word "warlock" is written next to it.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Candace.
  • Exact Words: When Doofenwitchnote , after capturing her, demands the red boots from Candace, she replies they've grown on her. Doofenwitchnote  assumes she assumes she means that she's grown to like them as footwear. Candace then explains that they have literally started growing on her, as in they're becoming part of her body and she can't remove them.
  • Eye Am Watching You: Done by a lava crocodile towards Candace and her companions when they are trapped after the drawbridge is raised.
  • Fantastic Flora: When Jeremy-Tree comments on how scary the trees look, one of them (voiced by writer Bobby Gaylor, who also does Buford) snarks, "Well, we can't all be movie stars!"
  • Foreshadowing: When Buford and Baljeet get Candace's attention, she asks them what they want. Buford assumes she means in the metaphysical sense, so he responds, "Nothin'", while Baljeet says he wants to be cool. This would become the Nerdcrow and the Lion-Tiger-Bear Guy's desires in Candace's dream.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: One of the guards in Doof's castle has a pair of pink underpants with hearts on them.
  • "I Want" Song: Each of the sidekicks Candace meets gets one. Lion-Tiger-Bear Guy attempts at one, but it turns out short because he doesn't actually want anything; Candace lampshades such. Even Doof's guards get an "I Want" song.
  • I'm Melting!: Candace pours water onto Doofenwitchnote  with this intention, but all it ends up doing his shrinking his dressnote . He later returns wearing a pink tracksuit.
  • I'm Okay!: Little Suzy Johnson as the Wicked Witch of the East attempts to say this, but her cries for help fall on deaf ears.
  • If I Had a Nickel...:
Lion-Tiger-Bear Guy: Nope, I'm a combination of lion, tiger, and bear.
    Ensemble: Oh, my!
Lion-Tiger-Bear Guy: If I had a nickel for every time I heard that.
  • Insistent Terminology: Doof is not a witch; he's a warlock. And it's not a dress, it's a robe!
  • Magic Feather:
    • Subverted with the gifts to Candace's team. Nerdcrow is given cool sunglasses, but told coolness is undefinable and so they can only give him something to fake it. Jeremy turned out to be delusional and merely wearing a costume. Lion-Tiger-Bear Guy, meanwhile, wanted nothing, but got a sandwich, which he admitted was something he'd want.
    • Subverted with the red boots as well. They do nothing...but Doof wanted them because they're red and add color to his wardrobe, not for magical reasons.
  • Move Along, Nothing to See Here: Done for a brief gag in the "Yellow Sidewalk" song, when Good Witch Isabella says that a log truck overturned on the purple sidewalk, and a cop briefly appears saying this line.
  • Musicalis Interruptus:
    • Done during Nerd-crow's musical number; he is stopped by Candace.
    • When Doofenwitchnote  finally gets the Red Rubber Boots, he sings a musical number, but gets crushed by a flying house.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: The lava moat around Doofenwitch'snote  castle has a red crocodile living in it.
  • No Music Allowed: Candace is not thrilled that her dream is going to have a lot of singing in it. But she lets Jeremy-Tree's song continue since she has a crush on him. And she is thrilled that the Lion-Tiger-Bear's song was short. A Running Gag is the Nerd-Crow's annoyance of everyone getting to finish their song but he doesn't get to.
  • Non-Indicative Name: The Sea of Razor-Sharp Rock Spires is actually a sea of soft pillows. This is lampshaded by Phineas.
  • Off to See the Wizard: The episode has Candace sent into a dream adventure akin to The Wizard of Oz. It should be noted that while Candace reads the original novel in the beginning, the dream seems more or less patterned after the 1939 film.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: When Candace sees Jeremy riding the giant unicycle with the gang, Jeremy tells Candace that it beats taking the sidewalk.
    Candace: You have no idea.
  • Record Needle Scratch: Happens every time Phineas and Ferb interrupt Candace and try to show her a fun way to Bustopolis.
  • Recycled Animation: A lot of Candace's dancing in "Rusted" is reused from "Busted". As always, this is made obvious by her black outline nose.
  • That Russian Squat Dance: The guards do this during their song.
  • Running Gag:
    • Whenever Doof calls out his guards, one of them is seen wearing a different outfit by mistake, either in their undergarments or wearing a pink gorilla outfit.
    • Whenever Candace keeps insisting on taking the Yellow Sidewalk instead of Phineas and Ferb's fun way, the rest of her party all reluctantly reply with, "Yes, Candace."
  • Self-Parody: The end credits song is a parody of "Busted" called "Rusted", which Candace sings about the Tin Man.
  • Stay on the Path: Invoked by Candace, but turns out to be averted in practice. She insists on following the yellow sidewalk as Isabella told her, and ignores Phineas and Ferb's more "fun" travel ideas...only for her to realize she really just missed out on fun, and nothing bad would have happened had she gone with her brothers. Turns out Isabella tells everyone going to Bustopolis to follow that sidewalk.
  • Stock Audio Clip: When Candace is chased by the flying squirrels (squirrels piloting airplanes), Candace yells, "Squirrels! Squirrels!"
  • Subverted Catchphrase: Since he never learned Perry the Platypus' name, when the gang escapes, Doofenwitchnote  simply says, "Curse you!" before fumbling over more words.
  • Taught by Experience: After finally reaching Bustopolis, Candace yet rejects the fun option Phineas and Ferb offer her to get to the wizard's tower. Her traveling companions, having dealt with all her previous rejections only causing them misery, opt for the fun way this time.
  • Toilet Humour: The last shot during the credits is the bear taking a dump behind a tree seen during "Tree-Related Wish" saying, "Yes. Yes I do."
  • The Unreveal: Elements such as Perry being a secret agent and characters that Candace has never met such as Doof and Monogram appear in Candace's dream. It is not revealed if or how she knows about these things, unlike her previous dream, which was a Dream Within a Dream by Perry.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Candace does not seem the least bit bothered by the sight of her brothers' pet platypus standing upright and wearing a fedora. But as soon as he approaches her friends, as a Call-Back to a semi-recurring gag, the first thing they ask about is the hat.
Nerdcrow: Look! It is Candace's pet platypus. Has he always had that hat?
  • Visual Pun: One of Doof's minions is a Mix-and-Match Critter between a spider and a monkey, or a spider monkey if you will.
Doofenwitch: Or maybe a monkey spider. I don't know what he is.
  • Wedgie: Hanging Wedgie. Nerd-Crow, like all other nerdy scarecrows, hangs from a pole by his underwear to keep the crows away. Later, when being chased by the flying squirrels, the Nerd-Crow quips, "I wish I was still hanging by my underwear!", and when he is captured by the planes and he gets his wish.
    Nerd-Crow: Just kidding!
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To The Wizard of Oz, nonetheless.
