Recap / Kim Possible S3 E8 "Rappin' Drakken"

Go To

Doctor Drakken invents a shampoo that puts anyone who uses it under his mind control. After his first attempt to Take Over the World with it fails, Drakken realizes that he needs to come up with some way to get people to actually use the stuff. His plan: market it with a catchy rap song.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Ron, while infiltrating Drakken's lair, accidentally breaks off the guidance system of Drakken's "hypertronic devastator drone" while climbing up it.
Drakken: Without the gyroscopic control unit, the drone will...!
    [Alarm klaxons sound.]
    Drakken: ...instantly crash. You buffoon!
Ron: Ah, I do what I can.
  • Apathetic Teacher: Mr. Barkin responds to the request to have class outside when it is thundering and lightning-ing outside, something he should really be fired for.
  • Aside Glance: Rufus' reaction to Ron's over-the-top dance moves towards the end of the "Naked Mole Rap" song.
  • At Least I Admit It: When Kim and Ron see the label of Drakken's new mind-controlling shampoo:
Ron: "Lather, Rinse, Obey". Hmm, points for full disclosure.
  • Badass Boast: A minor one when Shego is dismissive of Drakken's efforts to get onto American Starmaker and the results he could get from going on the show.
    Drakken: Bada-bing! Instant fame!
    Shego: For fifteen minutes!
    Drakken: That's all I need.
  • Call-Back: The song Drakken sings at karaoke night is Oh Boyz song "Hello, Hello, Hello".
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Drakken's mind-controlling shampoo says exactly what it does on the bottle.
  • Continuity Nod: A couple callbacks to "Hidden Talent":
    • Ron mentions how Kim gave a stellar performance in their school's talent show the previous school year.
    • While Kim's battling Shego in the dressing room and Ron's waiting for Kim to come out do the performance, he says, "This is the talent show all over again!"
  • Crazy Enough to Work: Shego, on Drakken's latest scheme:
Shego: I know I'm going to regret saying this, but I think you may finally have achieved, "so dumb it just might work."
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Drakken's initial attempt to market his mind-control shampoo failed primarily because, due to "truth in labeling laws," the label told people what the stuff did—his picture on the label probably didn't help, either.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Shego listens to music on her headphones to tune out Drakken's latest monologue. This ultimately gives Drakken the idea for his Product Placement scheme.
  • Hidden Depths: We learn that Drakken likes to attend karaoke night, and if his song selection is any indication, he’s also an Oh Boyz fan.
  • "I Am" Song: Drakken's rap talks about his career as a villain in addition to plugging his shampoo.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: The judge may have a nasty demeanor, but he's not wrong when he's telling the contestants how bad they are.
Judge: Not only can't you sing, your clothes are simply dreadful, and your freakish overbite frightens small mammals!
    [Contestant shows his overbite.]
Rufus: (squeals in terror and hides his head in the couch.)
  • "Knock Knock" Joke: Done by Ron and Kim, who does a disappointing punchline.
    Ron: Knock knock!
    Rufus: (giggles) Who's there?
    Kim: Invisible lair.
    Ron: "Invisible lair" who?
Kim: Invisible lair right in front of us. Let's bust the bad guys!
Ron: I'm not really sure that works.
  • Luck-Based Search Technique: Where all the efforts of Global Justice failed to detect Drakken's new lair, one spilled soda from Ron does the trick.
  • Magic Countdown: Averted where Drakken launches his Hypertronic Devastator Drone immediately while Kim is fighting.
    Kim: Wait, no countdown?
Shego: No, no. He's actually learning.
Drakken: During the time it takes the computer voice to count backwards from ten, you always manage to defeat me. Not anymore!
    • He still failed due to Ron accidentally breaking off the gyroscopic control unit, but points for trying.
Ron: (Holding out a metal piece) Uh, dude, is this important?
Drakken: [gasps] THE GYROSCOPIC CONTROL UNIT! Where'd you get this?
Ron: Yeah, well, we actually snuck in by climbing up your whatever-it-is...
      Drakken: Hypertronic Devastator Drone!
Ron: Yes, and I slipped, and I had to kinda grab on to something, and it kinda snapped off.
Drakken: Without the gyroscopic control unit, the drone will—! (alarm blares; Drakken looks up to see the drone falling out of the sky, making a dive bomb right toward his lair) ...instantly crash. YOU BUFFOON!
Ron: Ah, I do what I can.
  • May Contain Evil: "Dr. D's Brainwashing Shampoo and Cranium Rinse".
  • Musical Episode: Feature two songs performed respectively by heroes and villain.
  • Mustache Vandalism: Drakken defaces a picture of Kim as part of his act.
  • Non-Nude Bathing: One of Drakken's hapless henchmen wears his boxer shorts in the shower while testing the mind-control shampoo.
  • Not Himself: Kim is suspicious when the American Starmaker judge is being nicer than usual. She then discovers that he's under the influence of Drakken's shampoo.
  • Oh, Crap!: Drakken loses confidence in his plan when he finds out that he has one final challenger on the show, and who said challenger is.
Judge: But according to our computers, and we don't know how this happened, we have one final contestant to challenge you: Kim Possible!
    Drakken: W-whaa...?
  • Piss-Take Rap: Drakken and Ron both try their hand at it on American Starmaker.
  • Product Placement: After Shego comments on how people often buy stuff mentioned in popular songs, Drakken gets the idea to convince MC Honey to mention his shampoo in one of her rap songs. After she rejects him, Drakken decides to become a rap star himself. This trope is actually lampshaded by Team Possible —
    • When Kim expresses skepticism about people buying up Drakken's shampoo just because he raps about it in a song, Ron points out how real-life products mentioned in songs usually end up becoming pretty popular.
    • Wade agrees with Ron and points out to Kim that American Starmaker's a very popular show (it has millions of viewers), so a lot of people will see Drakken perform his song. Wade also notes that, on the chance Drakken ends up actually winning the show (whether or not it's through honest means), he could get anything from a record contract to movie/TV-deals.
  • Self-Disposing Villain: Drakken's horrible marketing of Lather, Rinse, Obey turns off basically everyone from wanting to buy it without any outside help from Kim.
  • Shout-Out: American Starmaker is an obvious parody of American Idol, right down to having the rude, critical judge (an obvious parody of AI's judge, Simon Cowell).
  • Skewed Priorities: Shego complains about Drakken not getting an autograph from M.C Honey while he was trying to convince her to market his shampoo.
  • Strange Minds Think A Like:
    • Both Kim and Wade have the same opinion of toenail fungus: "Eww uggh!".
    • Both Ron and Shego assume that Drakken's shampoo bombed because of his picture on the bottle.
  • Villain Episode: The writers originally planned to focus completely on Drakken and Shego. This idea was nixed, but the final result is still about as close as the series ever came to a villain-centric episode.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never find out what happens to Shego after she gets drenched in Drakken's shampoo.
    • The stuff apparently takes a long time to wear off (if it ever does), considering that the guinea-pig henchman is seen still clucking like a chicken after the shampoo is shipped out, stocked on store shelves, and returned for failing to sell....
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: Drakken's first attempt to distribute his mind-control shampoo fails when nobody buys the stuff and it all gets shipped back to him. Kim doesn't have to do a thing.
Kim: Wow, Drakken is self-foiling now! Spankin'!
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Kim and Ron's reaction to Drakken appearing on American Starmaker.
    Kim: No...
    Ron: It can't be...
    Kim: And yet, it is.
Ron: You think your skin was crawling before?
Wade: (via the Kimmunicator) Kim, are you watching?!
    Kim: Yup. But not believing.
