Dragon Boy is an American Dragon: Jake Long Self-Insert Fic/Series Fic written by gelefant.

"Dragon Boy" is a condensed retelling of American Dragon: Jake Long with the author in place of Jake.

On the morning of his thirteenth birthday, Jermaine Carter wakes up transformed into a dragon. Unlike the series' canon, his entire family knows about this from the beginning. He also isn't required to keep it a secret from anybody. He soon receives guidance and help from the World Dragon Council.

Each chapter of "Dragon Boy" is a combined rewrite of many different episodes.

Artwork for the fanfic can be found here, here, and here.

Tropes found in this fanfic:

  • Academy of Evil: The Huntsclan Academy, as in canon.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Silver no longer has her Absurd Phobia of water.
  • Adapted Out: The Longs, Fu Dog, Trixie, Spud, and Professor Rotwood are absent from the story.
  • Ascended Extra: Several examples.
    • The World Dragon Council only appeared in three episodes of the series. Here, they become recurring characters who (as mentioned above) serve as mentors for Jermaine.
    • Silver also only appeared in three episodes of the series, one of which was just a silent cameo. Here, she becomes both a main character and part of Team Dragon after Jermaine rescues her from the Huntsclan at the end of "Dragon Up."
    • Rose's twin sister Daisy, who only appeared in a flashback in the series, is an important character almost right from the start.
    • Related to the above, Rose's birth parents only had cameos in the series, with only her mother having any speaking lines. Here, they're recurring characters.
  • Battle Couple: Jermaine and Rose become this after he reveals his dragon identity to her. As in canon, his dragon powers complement her hand-to-hand combat skills rather nicely.
  • Best Friend: Brook, Jermaine, and Silver gradually become this to each other after he rescues them from the Huntsclan.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Jermaine and Rose share one during a school-sponsored ski trip, which leads to the below-mentioned Relationship Upgrade and Official Couple status.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Rose in "The Tragic Rose," thanks to a special device the Huntsman uses on her. Jermaine is later able to destroy it with a well-placed fireball during the commotion of the World Dragon Council coming to the rescue.
  • Crystal Skull: In "Bones to Pick," as in canon, the Huntsman collects the thirteen Aztec Skulls to wish for the death of all magical creatures. Also as in canon, he fails in his goal.
  • Humble Hero: Jermaine adamantly refuses to let his victories go to his head and always acknowledges that he achieves them with help from others.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Rose having a dragon-shaped birthmark and Daisy having a mole are the only ways to tell the two twins apart.
  • Implied Death Threat: The Huntsman does this in regard to Jermaine and Rose’s parents as a means to blackmail them into helping him.
Huntsman:Your families are quite safe at the Huntsclan Academy. They'll remain that way as long as you do exactly as I say and bring me those skulls tonight."
  • Internal Homage: As mentioned in the description, every chapter is a rewrite of multiple episodes from the original series.
  • Internal Reveal: Jermaine reveals his dragon powers to Rose, Daisy, and the Oracle Twins right after the Love Cruise in "Dragon Up."
  • In the Back: This is how Rose ultimately defeats the Huntsmaster at the end of "Bones to Pick.
  • It Only Works Once: As in canon, once the skulls are assembled in "Bones to Pick," only one wish per person is allowed.
  • Just Woke Up That Way: As mentioned in the description above, Jermaine wakes up transformed into a dragon on his thirteenth birthday.
  • Making a Splash: As a water nymph, Brook can control water.
  • Meaningful Name: Brook the water nymph.
  • Mentor Archetype: As mentioned above, the World Dragon Council (Councilor Andam in particular) serve this role to Jermaine.
  • Next Tier Power-Up: As in canon, the Dark Dragon is this in "Darkness and Shadows." Having already been a massive force to reckon with before his resurrection, upon his revival the Dark Dragon was given so many superpowered enhancements by Chang that he became strong enough to defeat all the world's dragons working together at once. Had he not gotten trapped in the temple, he likely would've gone on to conquer the entire planet with ease.
  • Official Couple: Jermaine and Rose at the end of "Dragon Up."
  • One-Man Army: Even with his allies defeated and his Shade Demons dispelled, the Dark Dragon still has more than enough power to take on all his opponents singlehandedly in "Darkness and Shadows."
  • Original Character: Averted with Brook, who was actually going to be a friend of Jake's in the original draft for the canon series.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: In "The Tragic Rose," it seems like Jermaine only dreamt about meeting up with Rose in person. Subverted when he wakes up to find himself holding her Huntsgirl mask.
  • Our Nymphs Are Different: As mentioned above, Brook is a water nymph with control over water. Jermaine rescues her at the same time he rescues Silver. Like Silver, Brook becomes a main character and part of Team Dragon.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Kara and Sara, as in canon.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Jermaine and Rose at the end of "Dragon Up."
  • Reunion Kiss: Jermaine and Rose share one at the end of "The Tragic Rose" after she's rescued from her months-long brainwashing and kidnapping by the Huntsman.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When their plan goes pear-shaped, Pandarus, the Gorgon Sisters, Vicky, and the kelpie abandon the Dark Dragon in "Darkness and Shadows."
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: As in canon, the final fate of the Dark Dragon is being sucked into a portal that leaves him trapped for 1,000 years in a temple in another dimension.
  • Shipper on Deck: Both Jermaine and Rose's respective families want them to be together. To say the families are excited when it finally does happen is an understatement.
  • Ship Tease: Between Jermaine and Rose during "Dragon Up:" This soon leads to them becoming an item.
    • They go on a school-sponsored Valentine's Day Love Cruise together.
    • They audition for and get the lead roles in their school's productions of Antony and Cleopatra and later Romeo and Juliet, which includes the famous kissing scenes in both. They also practice their lines at each other's houses.
    • Their aforementioned ski trip kiss.
  • Sixth Ranger: The Oracle Twins and Rose later join Team Dragon.
  • Taking You with Me: As in canon, the Dark Dragon attempts to drag Jake and Rose into the portal with him in "Darkness and Shadows," but Rose succeeds in using her spear to cut the end of his tail off.
  • Total Eclipse of the Plot: As in canon, it's of the less common lunar variety. The once-every-thousand-years eclipse in "Darkness and Shadows" causes the First Dragon Temple to appear on Victoria Peak for a few brief hours, during which time all the world's dragons convene for a summit. Once the eclipse ends, the temple and anyone left inside are pulled into another dimension until the next eclipse.
  • True Companions: Brook, Jermaine, and Silver.
  • The Unmasqued World: The World Dragon Council originally upheld the Masquerade as in canon. However, the twenty-first century's technological advancements gradually made that impossible.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After the Huntsman and the rest of the Huntsclan escape at the end of "Bones to Pick," they're never seen or heard from again for the rest of the story.
  • You Can't Thwart Stage One: In "Bones to Pick," the Huntsman succeeds in getting eleven of the thirteen crystal skulls, all without the heroes finding out.
  • You Said You Would Let Them Go: As in canon, a variation of this happens in "Bones to Pick" between Jermaine and Rose and the Huntsman after he blackmails them into helping him by promising them the location and safety of their parents.
Rose: We gave you your skulls. Now, release our parents.
Huntsman: Not until my plan is complete.
