What if Izuku unknowingly possessed a "sentient" Quirk like Tokoyami's Dark Shadow? Enter Midoriya Izuku, a young boy thought to be Quirkless who subconsciously controls the number one vigilante in Japan; an entity powerful enough to rival even the strongest villains. There's only one small, tiny problem: the entity thinks of him as a big brother. Good luck, Izuku-nii-chan!

Angel on my Shoulder is a My Hero Academia story in which Izuku possesses a sentient quirk. For the Archive of Our Own version, click here.

Angel on my Shoulder contains examples of...

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Izuku inadvertently creates the single most powerful vigilante in existence with a power he didn't know he had.
  • Adaptational Badass: Here, Yui can affect her own size, Ant-Man style. She calls her small form Tiny Dancer and her large form Giant Steps. She can't affect the size of other things while she's altering her own body, though.
  • Adaptational Nationality: Downplayed. Itsuka Kendo is of Chinese-descent and is specifically descended from Chen, a former wielder of One for All.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Valkyrie is completely naked most of the time, but her body lacks any genitalia. Her shape-shifting abilities imply that she can avert this, but she chooses not to because Izuku doesn't like to think about that. It's also because of this that many assume that she's just wearing a skin-tight bodysuit and isn't actually naked.
  • Big Friendly Dog: Konig the German Shepard, a former police dog. She's one of One for All's past wielders, and she has a Quirk that lets her shapeshift into a human.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Johnny overclocked his Quirk during his final battle with All for One, which allowed him to nearly defeat the supervillain at the cost of completely losing his sanity.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Johnny finds out how Izuku thinks of Bakugou, he makes sure to nip it in the bud by bluntly laying out why Bakugou isn't worth the admiration and why Izuku's friendship with him is toxic.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The AI from Mista's story is Mei's helper in the tournament.
  • Color-Coded Characters: As in canon, each One for All wielder is represented by a color. Hiro is white, Johnny is blue, Koko is red, Aftermath is green, Chen is orange, Mista is pink, Nana is purple, Toshinori is yellow, and Izuku is green again. The fourth wielder having Izuku's color is partly why the author decided to make her another version of Izuku, specifically an Opposite-Sex Clone from another future.
  • Four Is Death: Aftermath, the most dangerous of the escaped former One for All wielders, is the fourth to hold the power.
  • Happily Adopted: When Inko learns about Valkyrie, she's rather quick to treat her like family.
  • Horsemen of the Apocalypse: The four One for All wielders who escape after Nana helps Izuku are patterned after them: Johnny is War, Koko is Famine, Chen is Conquest, and Aftermath is Death.
  • Humanity Ensues: One of the previous One for All wielders was a dog with the Quirk to turn into a human.
  • Identical Stranger: Kiri looks pretty much identical to Yui Kodai, as a remnant of the draft where they were actually the same person (scrapped because the author realized it wouldn't be fair to the canon Yui). It does cause poor Izuku serious embarrassment when he mistakes Yui for Kiri and takes her out for ice cream.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Mei is very enthusiastic to make babies with Izuku. She means having him help her with her inventions (which she calls 'babies')
  • Innocently Insensitive: Izuku is rather offended by Todoroki's question if he and Valkyrie are All Might's illegitimate children, as it raises insulting implications for All Might and Izuku's mother.
  • Kidnapped by the Call: Chen (wielder #5) never wanted to be a One for All bearer; the previous one, Aftermath, forced the quirk on her.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: Johnny's quirk Stars and Stripes manifests as two eldritch entities in his body that can form themselves into items or extra appendages to help him. While they have American flag patterning, Izuku can see them staring at him when they're in wing mode, and overusing their power causes Johnny to go nuts.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Valkyrie's poor word choice leads the Wild Wild Pussy Cats into believing that Izuku is her lover who has her shapeshift into a ten-year-old for his amusement.note
  • Mystical White Hair: Mimi has this, as a result of imperfections in her cloning process.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Valkyrie is pretty much indestructible, having tanked deadly attacks without flinching. Usually this is much more painful for the attacker than it is for her.
  • O.C. Stand-in: The only past One for All wielders revealed when the story was begun were the First (All for One's brother), Nana, and All Might, so the story fills in slots 2, 3, 4 (canonically Hikage Shinomori), 5 (canonically Daigoro Banjo), and 6 (canonically En) with OCs.
  • Older Than They Look: Valkyrie looks like a twenty-something usually, but she's only around ten to eleven years old.
  • Opposite-Sex Clone: Aftermath/Izumi Midoriya is actually a clone of Izuku from a parallel universe.
  • Power Misidentification: The Hero Association eventually comes to believe that Kiri has the power to 'assimilate' others to make them like her, after Mimi joins her in being a vigilante, because they noticed that Mimi had Aftermath's attacks. She does not; what's actually happening is that she and Mimi are both using Izuku's Quirk (enhanced by One for All) to manifest themselves. Kiri got Mimi to join her with some good old-fashioned Defeat Equals Friendship.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: This is what got Konig/Koko labelled as a villain. A villain gang killed her handler back when she was a police dog. She activated her Quirk and hunted them all down, being labeled as a villain herself because heroes didn't like vigilantes killing criminals.
  • Secret Test of Character: Izuku passes the test set by Chen when he proves he is brave enough to stand against her when she tries to intimidate him.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Koko is absolutely fine running around naked in both dog and human forms, much to poor Izuku's embarrassment.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Worm power classifications are referred to as the system used to categorize Quirks in America (canon's 'Emitter, Transformation, Mutation' classes are the Simplified system used in Japan).
    • Johnny, one of the previous One for All wielders, takes elements from Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Steel Ball Run. His full name is John Daniel Valentine, he's deeply patriotic, and one possibility for his Quirk was D 4 C. He also quotes Valentine's final line from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven at one point.
    • Chen knows Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist.
    • Chen also was once warned by her employer that they want the target's body intact and that no disintegrations were allowed.
    • Nana loves casually throwing around pop culture references.
    • Johnny was also a member of the Justice Guild, an early superhero team with a space station base.
    • All Might mentions Captain Planet as an environmentalist vigilante.
  • Tulpa: Valkyrie is a mental construct created by Izuku. Though dependent on him to exist, she can do a lot of actions without him.
  • Urban Legend Love Life: Izuku gains a reputation as a lothario due to a number of misunderstandings.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Most Abnormal quirks remain hidden simply because they're so minor they're never noticed (an example given is a guy who uncontrollably emitted a tiny electromagnetic pulse- he only noticed when he realized that every TV screen he passed had a small amount of static), or only activate in incredibly specific circumstances (like the guy who could control the path of hurricanes as long as he was in the storm's eye, or the woman who could Blow You Away if everyone in her vicinity was feeling the same emotion).
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Johnny starts to lose his sanity when he overuses his quirk.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: Izuku has a minor freakout when he accidentally calls Midnight 'Annette', since Annette was Johnny's wife.
