Tropes

  • Accidental murder- Played straight when Alex, Sarah and Piper run over Mary Graves. Of course it's not the murder that makes Graves go after them, but the lies.
  • Adults are useless- Subverted with many of the adults in the story as most of them really are competent. Some of them, however...
  • All of the Other Reindeer- Piper has been actively tormented by Kristy and her popular crowd for years, and was treated harshly or ignored by everyone else as they were afraid of Kristy's wrath. It does eventually get better but the bullying never stops until she finally decides to fight back.
  • Big brother instinct- Alex is very protective over his twelve year old sister, and consider's himself the one who needs to take care of her. He also has a bit of this for Sarah later on, as well as Katrina.
  • Bullying a Dragon- Piper's treatment by the popular kids could be considered this as they know she is strong enough to hurt anyone. However, she keeps refusing to fight back, so it is somewhat justified, as after years of bullying, they most likely just assumed she wouldn't do anything.
  • Disappeared dad- Alex's dad (and mom) is gone.
  • Eating lunch alone- Piper eats lunch alone every day by choice, until Sarah and Katrina finally decide to join her. Happens to Katrina at least once, as well.
  • Et tu, Brute?- Jay and Katrina both betray the others by working for Graves.
  • Evil counterpart- Kristy could be considered this of Piper. They aren't too much different, and Kristy even admits her obsession with taking down Piper is in part because she knows, if given the chance, Piper could be just as popular, if not more popular, than she is. Their parents are both somewhat neglectful, they both love music, they both love Alex...Kristy simply managed to be the one to turn into the Alpha Bitch, instead of Piper.
  • Even Evil has loved ones- Graves loved his wife Mary, so much that her death is what is driving him throughout the book. He also cares about his son Jay, only...he's not a very good father.
  • Everyone can see it- Alex and Piper's relationship, oh so much.
  • Eye scream- Katrina losing her left eye after a nasty beating from her father. Doesn't go into too much detail, though, as she is already half-unconscious when it happens and only knows that for the time being she couldn't see anything.
  • Fire-Forged Friends
  • Former Friend of Alpha Bitch- Piper and Kristy used to be best friends, until problems with the band erupted and Piper was kicked out. Then the battle of the bands came and their rivalry started for real, as Piper had won but Kristy framed her for cheating. (Not to mention that Kristy is the reason Piper's parents started fighting...}Now they are bitter rivals, and Piper is Kristy's favorite target.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling- With Sarah and Katrina, Sarah is the fool and Katrina is the responsible one. There is also a variation with Nick (responsible) and Alex (foolish) though they are cousins, not siblings.
  • Gray-and-Gray Morality- On one hand you have the students, who killed someone by accident and are lying to the cops, and eventually do even worse things to keep the secret. On the other hand you have the police chief, who lost his wife and is desperate to solve the case and set things right...who is also a rather neglectful father and a little insane and ruthless.
  • Heel-face revolving door- Katrina just can't seem to pick a side...
  • Lack of Empathy- Though she doesn't lack it exactly, Piper struggles with empathy simply because she's been so used to being a loner that she doesn't know how to care about other people, but she gets better. Played straighter with Kristy and Graves.
  • Last-Name Basis- Alex always calling Piper 'Kent', her last name. Everyone else uses her first name, though.
  • Loners Are Freaks- Piper, a loner, is basically considered a freak by much of the school. Somewhat subverted, however, in that much of the school don't actually hate her, they are simply playing along with Kristy's game.
  • Love makes you evil- A variation where it's Grave's love and heartbreak over losing Mary that makes him go after the students so ruthlessly. Katrina's love for Jay is also one reason she switches sides.
  • Manipulative bitch- Kristy.
  • Meaningful Echo- This quote- "Run away, change our names, flee the country." "Be serious." "I am." First it's used while the students are trying to figure out what to do, almost jokingly. Second time it's more serious, but still taken as a joke. The third time is when the three students and Jay are on the train fleeing the city and they ask what to do next.
  • missing mom Alex's mom (and dad), Sarah and Katrina's mother. Also Jay's mother, but...
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal- Katrina does the Face–Heel Turn version, betraying her friends to help Jay and Chief Graves put them in jail. Later she and Jay both make the Heel–Face Turn version.
  • My god, what have I done?- Happens many times. Piper, when she accidentally punches Sarah, Graves when he almost hurts Jay, etc.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity - Alex is actually brilliant, but pretends to be much dumber than he is to remain popular. After all...
  • Parental Neglect- Piper's parents are always fighting, so they rarely ever seem to care about her. They really do, though, but are horrible at showing it. Kristy's parents are also somewhat neglectful.
  • Personna Non Grata- "And the two of them were never aloud in that restaurant again." Doubles as a noodle incident.
  • Sanity slippage- Happens to Graves, though he was never all that sane to begin with...Also, eventually, Katrina.
  • Shipper on Deck- Sarah for Piper and Alex.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss- Alex does this to Piper. Unlike usual, though, she punches him and runs away. Played straighter when Katrina does it to Jay, though she pretends she only did it to protect Sarah.
  • Slasher Smile- When beating up Katrina, her father is described as having 'a crooked, cruel grin' and reminds her of a movie serial killer.
  • Street Urchin- Jay, though he's only doing it as part of the missions his dad sends him on.
  • Stepford Smiler- Sarah and Katrina.
  • Stepford Snarker- Piper, and Katrina to a lesser extent.
