Annette Crosbie, OBE, (12 February 1934), is a Scottish actress best known for playing Margaret Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave.
While her parents didn't approve of her pursuing an acting career, in her teens she joined the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Come 1956, she joined the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre Company. Crosbie appeared in her first film (The Bridal Path) in 1959 and her first episode of a TV series (an episode of Probation Officer) in 1962, but her big break wouldn't be until 1970 when she played Catherine of Aragon in The Six Wives of Henry VIII, a role that won her a BAFTA for Best Actress in 1971.
Crosbie won her second and final BAFTA in 1976, for her portrayal of Queen Victoria in Edward the Seventh the year prior. Following this, she played the Fairy Godmother in The Slipper and the Rose, voiced Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings, and played the Abbess in Hawk the Slayer.
While Crosbie had less of a prominent presence in The '80s, she sprung back into the spotlight in The '90s, starring in One Foot in the Grave as Margaret Meldrew, the long-suffering wife of Richard Wilson's Victor. During the same decade, she played Dr. Finlay's housekeeper, Janet, in Doctor Finlay, appeared in an episode of One Foot writer David Renwick's other series, Jonathan Creek, voiced Granny Weatherwax in Wyrd Sisters, and was appointed OBE in 1998.
She has still been acting since Turn of the Millennium, with some of her roles including Jessie in Calendar Girls, Mr. H's Aunt in Little Dorrit, Sadie Cairncross in Hope Springs, and Cissy Godfrey in Dad's Army (2016).
Her daughter Selina Griffiths is also an actress.
