Klarion the Witch Boy is a DC Comics character created by Jack Kirby for The Demon. Originally an antagonist for Etrigan, he later became a generic nuisance villain in the vein of Mr. Mxyzptlk or Bat-Mite before playing a major role in the Sins of Youth arc of DC's Young Justice series. Later, he was reimagined as an antihero in Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers of Victory (2005) maxi-series.

Many years later, he was re-imagined again, appearing in the New 52 version of Teen Titans before receiving his own series, simply titled Klarion.

Klarion has also appeared in animation, usually as an outright antagonist.

  • Batman: The Animated Series: A one-off appearance opposite Etrigan.
  • Young Justice (2010): A recurring character, Klarion is depicted here as a Lord of Chaos whose raw power is offset only by his mercurial nature and spotty memory. He first appeared in an attempt to seize the Helmet of Doctor Fate. He was later revealed to be a member of the series' Omniscient Council of Vagueness, the Light.
  • Justice League Action: Once again, he goes after the Helmet of Fate, and this time, he briefly succeeds.

Not to be confused with Russell Moon's Witch Boy trilogy and The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag.

Klarion the Witch Boy provides examples of:

    In General
  • Depending on the Writer: As these separate folders show. He's a "boy" who is a "witch"—as long as he fits those two criteria, writers feel free to adjust his age, personality and goals in various ways.
  • Gender Flip: Teekl was female until Morrison's version, which changed her into a male.

    Klarion the Witch Boy
  • Bratty Half-Pint: As originally conceived, Klarion was a brat from "Witch-World", an alternate dimension where everyone used black magic. He opened a portal to the mortal world in order to escape the adults and study forbidden magic, and decided to use his powers to harass humans.
  • Familiar: Klarion never goes anywhere without his faithful cat Teekl, who serves as both a pet and a bodyguard.
  • Great Gazoo: His magic weakens if he doesn't have Teekl with him, but other than that he can pretty much make anything happen with a wave of his hand.
  • Scare Chord: In the Sins of Youth Crisis Crossover, he insisted on announcing himself as "Klarion ... bum bum BUM ... the Witch Boy!" Grant Morrison would later cite this, as well as the "Eddie Munster drag", as why they completely reinvented the character for Seven Soldiers.

    Klarion Bleak
  • Human Subspecies: The residents of Limbo Town are the descendants of the missing colony of Roanoke.
  • Impairment Shot: When Klarion first shows up for his cameo in the Robin, Robin has just taken a blow to the head and is disoriented, and thus Klarion appears distorted.
  • Les Collaborateurs: The Submissionaries were installed by the Sheeda to keep the people of Limbo Town compliant in case the Sheeda ever returned.
  • Necromancer: Limbo Town's economy is based around using Grundies to tend the fields and mine rocks, and as such, all the living residents are proficient in necromancy.
  • Refusal of the Call: After saving Limbo Town from Melmoth and his men, Klarion was offered a chance to become the new Submissionary. He turned it down to continue exploring. Later, he was offered a spot on the Teen Titans, but turned that down as well.
  • Restraining Bolt: Only the Submissionaries can become Horigals, but only the witch women are able to undo the spell that forms a Horigal.
  • Shout-Out: Mr. Melmoth is named for Melmoth the Wanderer.
