The Narrator

    The Narrator
The person telling the story of Alkaline to you, the reader.
  • Framing Device: They're the one telling the story proper, with you, the reader, being their latest listener.

Alkaline and her Friends

    Alkaline
An spunky elf with long, sparkly silver hair and the main protagonist. With her power of purification, she protects Quark Island and its inhabitants.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Or, in this case, lack of color, as her skin's as white as chalk.
  • Big Anime Eyes: Her blue eyes are gigantic and get even bigger when she's excited.
  • Color Motif: She sports big blue eyes, chalk white skin, a white poncho, and silver hair.
  • Going Commando: She likes lifting her poncho up to "startle" others. The reactions she gets whenever she does this is enough for us to know said poncho is the only thing she's got on.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: A little girl powerful enough to protect all the island and its people.
  • Simple, yet Opulent: Her white, featureless poncho, which the narrative describes as being beautiful to behold.

    Lanthan
A mild-mannered red Rock Monster and Alkaline's best friend.

    Noble Oble
A being from Edelga, a planet made of gas, sent to Quark Island to assess its suitability for her people.
  • Combat Tentacles: The wispy tendrils she can sprout from her back, though she rarely uses them for combat.
  • Energy Beings: Oble's made entirely of some sort of purple-colored gas that's thick enough that her body can be seen, and it's apparently ignitable since she's got a big flame jutting out the top of her head.
  • Flaming Hair: A huge, purplish-white wisp flares out her head.
  • Intangibility: As she's made of gas, everything passes through her. Calcia's magic passes right through her, and Aluminok (when he was hungry) couldn't grab her with his tongue-hand or catch her in his mouth.
  • Meaningful Name: Derived from "Noble Gases", the collective term of the seven elements in the 18th group of the Periodic Table.
  • Noodle People: She's described as being quite skinny and having long, spindly fingers.
  • No-Sell: Calcia's magic doesn't work on her because she's made of gas, as Calcia's magic can only work on solid beings and objects.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Inverted. Oble and the Edelgans really aren't that bizarre compared to how bizarre things on the island already are, and all they really want is to coexist with the Quarkians. Though their interest in Alkaline is somewhat creepy.
  • Shout-Out: The way her appearance is described (purple-colored with bright flames jutting out their heads) brings to mind the Anodites from Ben 10.

The Quarkians

Friendly

    Iron Meister
The Leader of Quark Island.

    Aluminok
An anaconda and Iron Meister's advisor. He's calm and reasonable under normal conditions but becomes ravenous and monstrous if he begins his day without breakfast.
  • Blue Is Calm: Sports blue scales and is a sweetheart at his calmest.
  • Body Horror: The corners of his mouth go way past where his head begins, and his tongue ends in a hand.
  • Easily Forgiven: Nobody cares at all he was trying to eat innocent rabbits once he calms down. Justified, as everyone already knew what possessed him to do it. Even the very rabbits he tried to eat have no problem bouncing and sliding on his body once he calms down.
  • Face of a Thug: He's got huge, green eyes and a massive mouth filled with long, jagged fangs, but is still a nice reptile to be around.
  • Glowing Eyes: His green eyes glow when he's hungry and sees something he finds delicious. When he sees a bunch of purple licorice (a.k.a. Noble Oble), his green eyes glow so bright they turn white.
  • The Good Chancellor: Good at his job and has the Quarkians' best interests at heart.
  • Hand Behind Head: Does this with the hand on the end of his tongue after coming to his senses.
  • Knotty Tentacles: He's first appears tangled up in some trees due to chasing Lop Glade's rabbits everywhere.
  • Multipurpose Tongue: His Overly-Long Tongue, which ends in a hand that acts as his main appendage.
  • One-Track-Minded Hunger: When he's hungry, satiating said hunger is all that matters to him.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: That ends in a hand, no less.
  • Reluctant Monster: Very monstrous when hungry, but reasonable and articulate once satiated. That, and he's quite embarrassed about making a scene after coming to his senses.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Averted. He's quite the nice anaconda once you get to know him.

    Acid Icarus
Alkaline's cousin, a being made of acid who travels around the world and visits Quark Island twice a month. He sports wings, but since they're made of acid, they constantly melt, and he often ends up free-falling to his destinations.
  • Ambiguously Related: He and Alkaline are cousins despite the fact he's a living pile of acid she's an elf. It may have to do with the story's overall Motif, though, as the terms they're named after (alkaline and acidic) are both related to pH.
  • Deadly Sparring: Downplayed. His sparring matches with Alkaline can get very brutal, but with her being a magical elf that can heal herself and him being made of a liquid, their matches never result in either of them actually being scathed.
  • Foil: To his sister, Alkaline. Alkaline's an energetic girl with chalk white skin and long hair who spends her time skating on the ground on her home island, while Icarus is a stoic boy with dark green skin and no hair who spends his time flying in the sky and traveling all over the world.
  • Hollywood Acid: Downplayed. He can melt things, but is able to do so at will, thus touching him isn't an issue.
  • Meaningful Name: Named after the term "acidic" (the direct opposite of "alkaline" on the pH scale), and the mythological figure Icarus (his constantly melting wings).
  • Icarus Allusion: Both his surname and his wings constantly melting.
  • Pulling Themselves Together: His plummets always result in him turning into a puddle of acid once he lands, but he's always able to recombine every drop back into his humanoid form.

    Steelio
The strongest creature on Quark Island, towering creature with a triangle-shaped body made of steel. He's well aware of his overwhelming strength and tries his best to be careful around others.
  • Gentle Giant: The island's largest and scariest-looking inhabitant, but is very much on Alkaline's side.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Made entirely of metal.

    Pota-Pota
A relative of Iron Meister, a yellow, crescent-shaped being with black spots who lives deep in Quark Island's jungle.

Hostile

    Calcia the Witch
An adult woman with an Afro, the island's resident Wicked Witch, and Alkaline's Arch-Enemy. She despises Alkaline more than anything, and will do whatever it takes to get rid of her.
  • Big Bad: The source of anything and everything wrong that happens on Quark Island.
  • Catchphrase: "Have a nice day, Alkaline!", which she always says to her after transforming someone or something into a monster for her to fight and then vanishing.
  • Color Motif: Mainly Red, due to her jumpsuit, her igloo, the color of her magic and the color those she bewitches become. It's meant to signify how dangerous she is compared to Alkaline, who's main color is White.
  • Expy: She's essentially the Captain Hook to Alkaline's Peter Pan, being an older person decked out in red who sees the child protagonist as her Arch-Enemy, but constantly fails to defeat her.
  • Meaningful Name: Named after the element calcium.
  • Orcus on His Throne: She'd rather transform people and objects into monsters and unleash them on Alkaline then take Alkaline on directly. It may be justified, though, as her apparent fascination with the Black Sugar Spire hints she's biding her time for something much worse...
  • Visual Pun: Considering she's named after calcium and she's described as having huge breasts... it's pretty obvious what Otneimica was going for with her.
