Web Animation / Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS

Go To

Daddy Dearest: So, kid. You wanna date my daughter?
Boyfriend: Yeah! I wanna kiss my hot girlfriend!
Daddy Dearest: Not on my watch, The Boyfriend! Get ready to get rooooooooocked to your core!

Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS, often stylized Friday Night Funkin' THE MUSICAL (not to be confused with Random Encounters's work) is a series of Friday Night Funkin' covers created by Tom Hart Jr. (better known as RecD) that depict lyrics and sometimes entirely new stories to the original game. Every character is portrayed according to canon, for the most part, but sometimes Hidden Depths arise in these lyrical re-imaginings.

The playlist can be found here.

Episodes include:

This video series provides examples of:

  • A Man Is Always Eager: Whenever Boyfriend gets suspicious of something, Girlfriend will seduce him, making him forget these thoughts entirely.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Even when he's going through his Superpower Meltdown, Whitty can't help but admit that Boyfriend had a pretty good insult by the end.
Whitty: Even if you started running now, you wouldn't get far!
Boyfriend: Least my voice doesn't sound like a broken thrift shop guitar!
Whitty: Dang, that's actually a good one, stop right there, make those your last words!
  • Adaptational Badass: In the original VS Sonic.EXE, Girlfriend effortlessly stuns him and walks away with Boyfriend after Too Slow. Not so here, as not only does her attempt to fight back fail completely, Sonic.exe outright calls her a "lesser demon." Somewhat played with though; see Adaptational Wimp below.
  • Adaptational Villainy: The Senpai, Sarvente and Black Imposter videos imply that Girlfriend isn't as ditzy and innocent as she appears to be, with Black's video especially outright implying that she may be after Boyfriend's soul.
  • Adaptational Wimp: While Girlfriend does display her powers here before the Tankmen can shoot her, she only manages to take down 2 Tankmen by manipulating gravity, after which it's made clear that she can't take down the rest of the Tankmen due to their sheer numbers and would have actually got killed without Pico, while in the original game, it was confirmed by Word of God that all of the Tankmen would have been screwed even if Pico didn't show up. Goes double for Too Slow WITH LYRICS as Girlfriend is completely canceled out by .exe, whereas the original mod had the exact opposite happening.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: And how. Every character is as close to canon as possible, but RecD has gone as far as to add Hidden Depths or new ideas for directions the characters could end up going. Examples include:
    • Boyfriend is still his usual loveable, competitive, Fearless Fool self, but depending on his opponent, it's clear he Took a Level in Kindness as well as Took a Level in Badass, whether it ranges from giving sound advice to Pico duing "Blammed" to counter-threatening to cook and eat the Monster in "Monster". He's also a lot more expressive about his dreams of becoming a musician, as well as his ultimate goal of becoming more than just a boyfriend to Girlfriend. He's also much more expressive of his considerateness towards Girlfriend's parents, even to the point where Mommy Mearest calls him a bit of a killjoy.
    • Girlfriend still clearly loves Boyfriend, but is also not afraid to show signs of being a bit of a Deadpan Snarker to her significant other. She's also shown to express consideration towards other characters, such as wanting to respect Whitty's privacy. She's still a bit of a Brainless Beauty (subverted in later videos where she is implied to have ulterior motives), especially in Week 6, where she admits that Hating Simulator traps people inside of it right after Boyfriend boots it up. Beyond Week 7 With Lyrics, she seems to become a voice of reason for Boyfriend, and even displays a bit of badassery herself later on.
    • Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest seem to warm up to Boyfriend throughout their respective videos; however, it's clear that Boyfriend gets along better with Mommy Mearest (despite her threatening to drag Boyfriend to Hell if he doesn't achieve his dreams), considering that Girlfriend's father taunts them when they get trapped in the game and threatens Boyfriend when he's out a single minute past ten PM after he fights the virus taking over Hex. "Whitty FULL WEEK WITH LYRICS" reveals that the two weren't always as successful as they later came to be, and used to be good friends with Whitty until Whitty refused to sing with them since he didn't want to go ballistic any further, and Boyfriend points out the possibility of them being Not Evil, Just Misunderstood to Whitty...which is fully confirmed in the Date Week episode where they are indeed happy to see him, but don't want him exploding anymore since they are homeowners, and more importantly parents now. Smoke 'Em Out Struggle with Lyrics unfortunately seems to avert this, at least for Daddy Dearest.
      • Daddy Dearest's remaster paints a different picture of him, where he implies despite his long-running discography, Girlfriend is really his only true fan in a Morality Pet sort of way. He feels excited when it seems to him at first that The Boyfriend, whom he's led to believe is a big fan of his music, wants to help him come out of retirement, and subsequently feels crushed when he learns the Boyfriend wasn't a true fan at all.
    • Skid and Pump are implied to be babysat by Girlfriend, resulting in their respective rap battles. In South and Monster with Lyrics, they take the couple to a spooky house for "a spooky meal" which their friend the Monster invited them to. They're also friends with the Eyes of the Universe in this series, and come back with their friend to distract the Monster when he's about ready to eat Boyfriend alive.
    • In Pico & Blammed WITH LYRICS, Pico doesn't mention being a hired hitman working for Dearest at all and instead offers to "save Boyfriend's bacon, or cook it" if he can't keep up with his rap when the two of them find themselves lost in the city — though the remaster of Week 3 brings that detail back into the spotlight and even before that, he comes in to save BF and GF from the Tankmen as in canon. His lyrics are rife with Newgrounds references and shoutouts (fittingly), and he primarily sings about not wanting to soften up like he feels Boyfriend did, and would rather go down being true to himself than change.
      • As an added bonus, while Darnell has yet to be mentioned or make a cameo, Nene, one of Pico's friends, is implied to have a popular sushi restaurant in her name.
    • Monsternote  is first seen with a rather cheerful and friendlier look... at first, before slipping into his usual ways. Some of the lyrics to his self-referential song are altered, note  but the rest of the song still carries its originally sinister vibe. Turns out even he's not immune to witnessing the cosmic horror that is the Eyes of the Universe.
    • Senpai is relatively the same besides a change to one of his in-game linesnote  but his irritation suddenly turns to desperation once The Boyfriend points out that his disc will eventually rot away. This also highly implies that Senpai is ''self-aware'' that's he's in a video game.
    • Spirit still wants to carry out their plan of escaping the game by leaving in Boyfriend or Girlfriend's body, but Boyfriend convinces him to let him go with the promise that he'll try to get him out of there, giving Spirit some lines of supportive dialogue as the couple depart from the Hating Simulator world.
Spirit: "You won this battle...now win the war for me. For all of us. Good luck!"
    • As mentioned above, Whitty used to be a nobody along with Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest, and used to be a close friend of theirs before exploding twice due to his Hair-Trigger Temper, leading him to run off and go into hiding. He comes off more as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold in this interpretation, especially with his lines about not wanting to take Boyfriend or Girlfriend's life; the former because it would make Girlfriend sad and the latter because it would make her parents sad, and his interactions with Carol when she steps in to stop him from blowing up.
      • In addition, Carol acts a lot more serious and protective of both Whitty and Boyfriend (to the point of outright calling Boyfriend out for picking on Whitty), compared to her chilled out, casual, and slightly vulgar attitude in her respective mod. She and Girlfriend also don't acknowledge each other in her cutscene despite being best friends in Carol's canon, but this was possibly just an oversight by the creators, considering they probably wanted to focus more on the relationship between Carol and Whitty.
    • Hex is the same old friendly face as usual, where his week ranges from bonding with Boyfriend about the similarities of basketball and music, talking about his experiences with other people, and offering The Boyfriend advice on making friends. Hex in this series is not only implied to have met Whitty (accepted by fanon as his best friend), but also Pico and even Tricky. "Hello World" has Boyfriend offer the idea of Hex getting his own late-night talk show to share his experiences and motivates Hex just as his way of showing thanks. Glitcher also plays with the fanon idea that the virus that spontaneously infects Hex was created and sent by the doomsday cult responsible for the creation of Whitty.
    • Sergeant John Captain (otherwise known as Tankman) is relatively what you'd expect; crass, crude, and overly macho, though the WITH LYRICS take on his week implies he has some hints of A Father to His Men, and while he tries very hard to hide it, he does show some concern for Steve when Pico shoots him. Also acts as somewhat of a Foil to his fellow Newgrounds mascot, Pico, where as Pico shows some willingness to change his act, Tankman leans hard on the fourth wall and reviles having to be "kid friendly" on YouTube, and his week ends with him stating he's going back to Newgrounds after the Dearest family teleports his guns and tank ammo away. His post-credits appearance where he runs RecD over with the tank during his end song has him advertise Newgrounds to the public, promising "guns, violence, and hot stuff".
    • Garcello is relatively the same as his canon self, with the only real difference being his added backstory and mission from Daddy Dearest to trick Boyfriend into taking his cigarettes. He obtained his cigarettes from one of Dearest's roadies, with the cigarettes being a curse that binds them to his soul unless he passes the pack onto someone else.
      • Annie is relatively the same too, right down to being Garcello's best friend, but FNF with Lyrics adds on that she tried brewing all sorts of different mixtures to release Garcello from his curse.
    • Bob is simultaneously the Boyfriend's creation and his original counterpart, and gets absolutely furious when the Boyfriend replaces Bob's lore with his own. He still hates being compared to Dream, though.
      • Ron is relatively the same, but his Straw Misogynist tendencies are explained here by people shoving art of the Girlfriend into his head, and ignoring his memes.
    • Edd's Britishness is played up to contrast with the American Boyfriend, and he also shows pride in his and his show's popularity, claiming that he doesn't need a invoked Colbert Bump from Boyfriend.
  • Adapted Out:
    • The Mid-Fight Masses episode doesn't feature a cover of "Casanova", with Selever and Rasazy not even being alluded to. Subverted as Selever later received his own solo episode, though like with Mid-Fight Masses itself, it's not canon to the series.
    • In the Week 5 episode, the dismantled Girlfriend head on top of the Christmas tree never appears during "Winter Horrorland".
    • The "Bob and Ron" episode doesn't feature "Trouble", "Onslaught", or any of the Little Man songs, the last of which having the character arguing that Boyfriend and Girlfriend should fight him before getting squished.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: This turns out to be the real reason Whitty is laying low. Every time he goes Ballistic, he overheats and explodes with enough intensity to, in his own words, "turn this place into the Grand Canyon". He is terrified of hurting innocents again, but Girlfriend's parents only care about how good a singer he is, disregarding the devastation that follows in his wake.
  • All There in the Script: RecD joked on Twitter that, as an extension of Spell My Name with a "The", BF's and GF's names are Theodore and Theresa respectively.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Girlfriend seems to be a little suspicious. For one, she covered up the Spirit's fate by distracting Boyfriend. Later on, Sarvente predicted that Girlfriend would want to steal his soul in the future. When Boyfriend asks her about that, she doesn’t say yes or no, but just gives him another distracting kiss. Week 5 implies that Boyfriend has died and went to heaven multiple times, but Girlfriend would show up in demon form each time and pull him back down, claiming that "his soul belongs to [her]". While she does this to revive Boyfriend, whether she has malicious intentions with it or not isn't made clear. And the episode once again ends with Boyfriend getting suspicious, and Girlfriend distracting him with a mistletoe. Following this, in Week 6 With Lyrics, she seduces Boyfriend right after he asks about what just happened with Spirit. It is implied that she is the one "mucking up the spacetime continuum" and messing with Edd's flashbacks in Challeng-Edd with Lyrics.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Did Daddy Dearest's cursed pencil actually create Bob, or did it simply transport BF and GF to Bob's realm? Boyfriend thinks it's the former considering Bob looks identical to Boyfriend's OC rival "Boyfiend", while Bob claims it's the latter, which is likely given that Bob knows all about his canon backstory and the ARG coveing it. The episode never confirms it one way or the other though.
  • Anachronic Order: The first four videos in the series cover Weeks 1 to 4 of the base game; the fifth covers Week 6, the following video goes back to Week 2 to cover the remaining songs; the next two videos cover Whitty's and Hex's mods, with the video after Hex being Week 7, then a week covering Smoke 'Em Out Struggle; the video after that is a remaster of Week 1 (explicitly meant as a prologue to the series as a whole), then two videos focusing on Mid-Fight Masses, then finally a video covering the last Week of the vanilla game at the time of release, Week 5. Not to mention the releases since then and that Twinsomnia With Lyrics (the latest release at time of revision) is the earliest to happen in the timeline.
  • Analogy Backfire: One of Sarvente's jabs at The Boyfriend rejecting her offer for salvation fails due to Boyfriend misinterpreting her as calling babies sinful, rather than her saying Boyfriend would be less sinful if he died when he was a baby.
Sarvente: Living as you are right now will surely lead you into sinning,
You'll be worse off than you would be if you died at your beginning!
The Boyfriend: Wait a second, are you saying I'm more sinful than a baby?
Those things don't have morals yet at all, so reconsider, maybe?
  • April Fools' Day: The whole point of the Bob and Ron episode.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: During Week 5, Monster transforms most of the main cast into food monsters, most of which have either Alliterative or Punny Names... ending with Pump. Evil Pump.
  • Ascended Extra: Steve, who in the original game drives by in his tank in the background during Week 7, is one of the tankmen holding Girlfriend at gunpoint here. This does not save him from getting shot by Pico.
  • Badass Boast: Sonic.exe gets in a very good one after Boyfriend asks "What did we ever do to you? Besides win-";
Sonic.exe: You ran from the inevitable. And the inevitable caught up with you.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In Week 5, Monster succeeds in eating Boyfriend, sending him to heaven. However, Girlfriend pulls his soul back down and resets the timeline, giving him a second chance.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the beginning of "Too Slow", Girlfriend taking out a Sonic 3 prototype that Daddy Dearest snatched from SEGA after they fired him in favor of a "less washed up artist" may make one believe that the game is corrupted and it will be a premise similar to Week 6. Instead, Longclaw shows up dead out of nowhere, which Boyfriend doesn't seem fazed by, and gives Boyfriend portal rings to find Sonic. He ends up using a blood red ring, and that's how he gets to Sonic.exe's realm.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Girlfriend hates being lied to, as revealed in "Tankman With Lyrics". Daddy Dearest took his daughter and her boyfriend for a ride in his private jet and lied to his daughter that humans love crash landings when he was actually just plotting to kill Boyfriend. Girlfriend becomes absolutely furious at this realization, reverting to her demon form and screaming at her father at the end of the video. It is currently unknown what she did to him after this.
    • When Tord shows up in "Challeng-EDD WITH LYRICS", he was seemingly more than happy to just let his former friends flee his attack up until Boyfriend started singing the opening of "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows", which Tord despises. Despite Boyfriend quickly realizing his mistake and shutting up, Tord immediately begins opening fire with his mech.
    • Do NOT tell Pico to get rid of his gun. The updated Week 3 has Boyfriend hit this one, resulting in a furious Pico threatening to go through with the job Daddy Dearest gave him—killing Boyfriend—that he was originally gonna turn down.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Done a lot of times:
  • Big "NO!":
    • IRIS yells this as its final line in "Detected", signifying its Villainous Breakdown after losing to Boyfriend.
    • Girlfriend does this at the end of "Bob and Ron" when Boyfriend immediately sets to work on Minecraft Huggy Wuggy using her dad's cursed pencil, just after Girlfriend asked Boyfriend to promise to never be creative again.
  • Bilingual Bonus: In Mid-Fight Masses, before Zavodila, Boyfriend throws an insult to Ruv that he translates to Russian so Ruv can understand it. This message, when translated, comes out to "Your hat looks like a depressed rabbit!"
  • Biting-the-Hand Humor: Tankman is brutally honest when expressing how much he hates being kid-friendly for YouTube, and uses the ending as an opportunity to advertise Newgrounds to the people who watch these videos.
  • Bittersweet Ending: At the end of Smoke 'Em Out Struggle, Garcello has found peace, but Annie has lost her best friend just as she seemingly found a cure to his curse and leaving her, Boyfriend, and Girlfriend in mourning. They decide to honor his final wish by destroying his cigarettes.
  • Bland-Name Product: In "CHALLENG-EDD WITH LYRICS", Tord states he eluded the police by creating TordVPN, a blatant riff on NordVPN, complete with the logo being shoddily edited to replace the moutains with Tord's hair horns.
  • Bowdlerise: Tankman's Sir Swears-a-Lot style of speaking is heavily censored, which he isn't too happy about.
Tankman: Let's rock, ya little runts!
Music halts, captions state (YouTube De-cuss-inator Activated) and Tankman looks at the camera
    Tankman: ...Oh funk off, YouTube.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Despite Daddy Dearest being an Adaptational Nice Guy, he's still extremely overprotective of his daughter, and antagonize Boyfriend if he violates his rule. Best shown in "Hex Full Week", where after Glitcher, both Boyfriend and Girlfriend violate the latter's curfew of 10:00 PM. Just as it hits 10:01, Daddy Dearest INSTANTLY teleports to the basketball court to try and take Boyfriend's soul. Later on, he lies to his daughter that humans love plane crashes, and then attempts to kill Boyfriend by crashing his own plane. It doesn’t help that he painted it to say “Daddy Dearest’s Boyfriend Destroying Jet”.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: During Gospel, Sarv shows Boyfriend what would happen to him if he didn't accept her offer for redemption. Boyfriend responds by stating he'd already experienced the exact scenario she showed him and came out of it just fine.
  • But Now I Must Go: At the end of the "Carol x Whitty Date Week With Lyrics" video, Whitty moves to his new home away from town, as it's for the best, but he will be able to hold on to the fond memories he had with Carol even if they won't see each other again.
  • Call-Back: The Pico episode (and the remaster) open with BF asking Pico what he's doing here, and him replying "Saving your bacon." The remaster also points out that he's on the Dearests' payroll at the time. The exchange gets repeated when Pico enters the scene in Week 7, and Pico says that he's contractually obligated to save Girlfriend.
  • The Cameo: Outside of Friday Night Funkin' the mods covered, there are a few characters either mentioned or shown that are either not from the source game or haven't had their mods given lyrics/vocals by RecD.
    • In South and Monster With Lyrics, Boyfriend and Girlfriend are saved from Monster by the Eyes of the Universe.
    • In Mommy Must Murder With Lyrics, Boyfriend is taking Girlfriend out to eat at Nene's Sushi and Sides, implying that Nene now runs a successful sushi business.
    • In Hex With Lyrics, Hex mentions during RAM that he met Tricky on his travels while passing through Nevada.
    • In Whitty With Lyrics, as Whitty is about to "blow it" again, Carol steps in to defuse Whitty.
    • A minor one: During Release in Garcello with Lyrics, one can see posters of both Tankman and Matt, suggesting that Matt does exist in this universe.
    • In the beginning of the Daddy Dearest remaster, we see a band consisting of the Dummied Out character Lucky Boy, a Distaff Counterpart to Lucky Boy said to be his girlfriend, and Clowfoe, the creator of the Vs. Impostor mod.
    • In Unloaded With Lyrics, when it's revealed that Pico was telling the events of the song as a story to kids as community service, the kids in question are Ski, Baby Blue Brother and Bandu.
  • Cannot Tell a Joke: One of the alternative universes that Selever shows Boyfriend has Pico failing at doing stand-up.
  • Canon Defilement: In-Universe, Boyfriend creates his own lore of Bob, which consists of him facing off against various modded opponents before battling Dr. Dearenstein, his creator in Boyfriend's headcanon. Bob is... less than happy with this new lore.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: The fact that Monster refers to his transformation of Pump as Evil Pump makes it clear he knows he's the bad guy and relishes in it.
  • Casting Gag: In the Selever episode, RecD As Himself ends up doing an impression of Tankman and Selever himself.
Selever: ALRIGHT I GET THE POINT. GO BACK HOME AND HIRE SOME OTHER VOICE ACTORS FOR ONCE, YA CHEAPSKATE.
  • Christmas Episode: Doubling as a Season Finale for Season 1, Week 5 is an episode revolving around Boyfriend trying to help the Dearests form a more normal family tradition and give Girlfriend a better Christmas. Things then proceed to go off the rails once Monster shows up.
  • Composite Character: The glasses tankman holding Girlfriend hostage in Week 7 was just a random mook, with Steve, the main tankman with that accessory, cameoing in the background. In "Week 7 WITH LYRICS", the two are combined and Steve is instead one of the soldiers holding Girlfriend hostage. Like the canon grunt, he also gets shot by Pico.
  • Crossover: Zavodila 2 is one with Juno Songs, based on his own lyrical adaptation of the song. This Ruv is shown to be from a separate universe to the FNFWL universe, with Selever trying to have Boyfriend make this universe's Ruv and Sarv get together in the hopes that it will make him canon.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Girlfriend's singing voice in "Stress" is somewhat shrill on some parts.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Whitty's "unbeatable technique", which has never been recorded. Because it induces a catastrophic Superpower Meltdown that levels everything around him.
  • Darker and Edgier: Garcello's episode, for obvious reasons, has a much more somber tone compared to the rest of the series.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • The Date Week gives the spotlight to Whitty and Carol, with Boyfriend and Girlfriend not being present at all in the episode.
    • Spooky Month focuses on Skid and Pump, once again with Boyfriend and Girlfriend nowhere to be seen.
    • ZANTA is about the rap battle between Zanta against Edd, Tom and Matt, though Boyfriend is given a cameo through a phone call.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Hex manages to knock out Daddy Dearest with a single punch, completely on accident.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Moreso than the source game. Boyfriend is referred to as "The Boyfriend", as well as his girlfriend being called "The Girlfriend". They even refer to each other in this manner!
  • Dragged Off to Hell:
    • Mommy Mearest threatens to do this to Boyfriend if he doesn't fulfill his dreams in "Satin Panties".
Mommy Mearest: Guess you're set on goin' big, livin' well... If you don't, I'll drag your sorry butt down to hell! (and I ain't jokin')
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The first four videos in the series only covered one or two songs instead of the whole week. For Week 2, this was later rectified with "Spookeez" getting a sequel covering "South" and "Monster", while Weeks 1, 3 and 4 received remasters covering the full weeks.
  • Enemy Mine: Daddy Dearest decides to rely on Boyfriend to defeat IRIS, thinking of how hilarious their defeat would be at the hands of him.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Girlfriend's reaction when Boyfriend accidentally leaves her behind when teleporting away from Sonic.exe.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Downplayed in that Girlfriend is Ambiguously Evil, but despite the hints that she wants Boyfriend’s soul, she shows signs of genuinely loving him as well. When he asks if she’s retrieving his soul from Heaven because she loves him (something that’s implied to have happened multiple times), she responds with “Always.” Her parents play the trope straight, as they are unambiguously evil but they do indeed love her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: As "Gospel" draws to a close, Sarvente mentions that she, as the queen of Hell, could easily just warp Boyfriend's mind and take his soul for daring to cross her, but even she has her limits.
  • Eviler than Thou:
    • In Week 5, Monster easily turns Mommy Mearest and Daddy Dearest into food abominations and uses them to capture Girlfriend and eat her; combined with the more sympathetic and rounded portrayals of Girlfriend's parents, this makes him appear especially heinous and dangerous. Even after the food abominations are revealed to be illusions, leaving if Monster is actually stronger than the two ambiguous, the point is still clearly made.
    • In "Too Slow", Sonic.exe plans to cross into Boyfriend's world after he kills him and kill Girlfriend's parents. He also considers Girlfriend to be "a lesser demon" compared to him.
  • Exact Words:
    • During the song "R.A.M", Hex mentions meeting Pico and asking the latter to play basketball with him, telling him to "shoot the ball". Pico obliges, and shoots it with his gun.
Hex: Told him "shoot the ball"! He did.
    • Boyfriend tells Bob to explain who he is, if he isn't Boyfiend. Most of Bob's... erm, "lyrics" in "Run" are excerpts from his page on the Mod Funkipedia and excerpts from his ARG that explain who he is. invoked
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Boyfriend chimes in to help talk down Tord in "Challeng-EDD WITH LYRICS", he claims everything will be "Sunshine, Lollipops" before remembering Tord has a special kind of hatred for the song he was referencing and stopping there when Tord glares his way.
  • Face–Monster Turn: In the Christmas special, Monster transforms the other opponents prior to Week 6 into food-themed abominations just like him. They even receive food mutations to their names. He sings "Winter Horrorland" in order to buy time to fully control them.
    • Daddy Durian
    • Mommy Melon
    • Peaco
    • Skidney Bean
    • and Pump... is simply just Evil Pump, due to him already being named after a pumpkin.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Girlfriend dishes out a truly horrific fate to the Impostor. First, she extracts his soul from his body. Then, she prevents him from ever returning to it. After he begs her not to leave him trapped in the Game Over screen outside of his body forever, she obliges and destroys it. Then leaves him to not rot.
  • Finger Extinguisher: When Whitty is seconds away from exploding, Carol puts out his wick. Funnily enough, since Whitty is so tall, Carol needed a stool to do so, which she's carrying with as they walk away.
  • Freudian Excuse: Daddy Dearest's sheer protectiveness of his daughter stems from him feeling that she's his only true fan, and therefore doesn't want to lose her. He gets excited when Boyfriend presents himself as his biggest fan and wants to help him out of retirement, only to feel crushed when it turns out he lied in order to get on his good side so he could date Girlfriend.
  • For the Evulz: The Impostor admits in "Defeat" that he kills all the Crewmates for amusement. He even collects the corpses and piles them in the Game Over screen. Upon realizing that killing Boyfriend in the Game Over screen means the deaths won't be reset, Black decides to expand his goals to taking the Skeld across the universe and collecting "dead bodies of infinite variety".
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: Even if he's mostly censored to comply with YouTube's advertiser-friendly policies, Tankman does manage to slip in this little joke about his unmentionables:
"But you really oughta understand why guns get my turret risin."
  • Gravity Master: Tankman's episode reveals that Girlfriend can manipulate gravity.
  • Harmful to Minors: When Pico is sentenced to community service on telling stories to young children in the library, he decides to tell them about how he and his friends brutally murdered the Uberkids. As expected, they were traumatized, and Boyfriend calls him out. And judging by his reaction, this isn't the first time Pico has told his violent stories to children. It gets worse for the episode's final joke, where he intends to read them a book based on Happy Tree Friends, clearly unaware of how gory and violent the series is.
  • Hypocrite: In "Roses", Senpai accuses three-dimensional people of having "emotions that go sour quickly". Of course, throughout the entirety of Roses, Senpai has revealed his Bitch in Sheep's Clothing nature over having lost one rap battle with Boyfriend.
  • Ironic Name: The remaster of Week 1 reveals that when the two leads first met, they pointed out how weird it was that they were named “The Girlfriend” and “The Boyfriend” despite being single.
  • Kinder and Cleaner: Downplayed. Most of the more mature themes have been removed or altered, but the humor and charm in the original game is still here. Most notably, Senpai's Freudian Threat before "Roses" is changed to "But keep it up and the things I'll do to you aren't going to be very E for Everyone", and Mommy Mearest's song names are never mentioned. Tankman makes sure he can complain about it at every occasion he gets.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Monster's appearance in Week 5 changes the episode from a normal Christmas special to a full-on horror, with grotesque transformations, a darker tone, and him succeeding in killing Boyfriend, sending him to heaven, culminating in Girlfriend pulling him back down with a strong implication that she wants his soul.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: As seen in the Daddy Dearest remaster, Boyfriend, Girlfriend, and Dearest himself are aware of the arrows from the game.
  • Leitmotif: Some songs from the game and other franchises are repurposed for story bits.
    • "High" plays when Boyfriend is hailing for a taxi in Mommy Must Murder With Lyrics.
    • A soft, childish version of "Winter Horrorland" plays with the arrival of "Mr. Lemon."
    • "Scary Swings" plays when Skid and Pump come back with the Eyes of the Universe.
    • A frantic, brassy version of "Ballistic" plays when Boyfriend starts fanboying over Whitty, followed by a more lax version of "Lo-Fight" as Girlfriend tries and fails to convince him to leave him alone.
    • "Carol Roll" begins to play when Carol steps in to defuse Whitty.
    • The electronic droning that opens "Glitcher" plays during both times IRIS hacks Hex. A proper chiptune remix of the song also plays when they challenge Daddy Dearest in the Weekend Update, only for him to let Boyfriend take the stage instead.
    • A menacing, orchestrated version of "Dad Battle" plays when Daddy Dearest arrives at the basketball court because of The Boyfriend being out with The Girlfriend after 10 PM.
    • A rendition of "Ugh" plays when Tankman cuts in line.
    • A dramatic rendition of "Stress" plays when Tankman believes that Boyfriend, Girlfriend, and Pico are spies for the enemy following the song proper, and threatens to personally kill the former two while the latter ran off when he ran out of ammo.
    • A rendition of "Guns" plays when Tankman squashes the creator of the video with his tank to promote Newgrounds while the latter was doing his outro.
    • "Good Enough" starts playing when Annie shows up to help Garcello... only for it to slow to a stop when she realizes she's too late.
    • An easy-going remix of "Bopeebo" plays in the Week 1 remake, when Boyfriend convinces Daddy Dearest that he's just a fan of his music and not at all trying to date his daughter. It continues for as long as they're amicable toward one another.
    • An ominous remix of "Dad Battle" plays when Boyfriend accidentally lets slip that the opposite is true. It swells into a more triumphant remix when Boyfriend stands up to Daddy for basically treating his daughter as an archive of his accomplishments.
    • The instrumental for "Parish" plays when Sarvente is trying to convince Boyfriend to join her church. It twists into a hybrid between Parish and Worship following the former song playing proper and Sarv subsequently beginning to lose her temper.
    • A dark, militant-esque cover of "Zavodila" plays when Ruv steps up to convince Boyfriend, namely a slowed-down version of the rather infamous third verse. It plays again when Boyfriend encounters Juno-Ruv, courtesy of noncanon son Selever.
    • A dramatic remix of Gospel plays following Sarv transforming into her true self.
    • An angry, frantic version of "Philly Nice" plays when Boyfriend tries to get Pico to turn in his gun in the Week 3 remake, which only serves to piss him off and threaten to blow BF's brains out like Daddy originally hired him to do.
  • Literal-Minded: When Boyfriend asks if Hex is just another guy who's against him dating Girlfriend, he takes the "date" part in the wrong context.
Hex: Huh? No! I have no qualms with you determining that woman's expiration date. Would you like me to help you calculate it?
    Girlfriend: Please don't.
  • Mellow Fellow: Edd remains chill throughout his episode, even in the face of Eduardo's jabs and Tord's rockets.
  • Motive Rant: Most modded characters often reveal quite a bit about themselves through their songs, explaining quite a bit about what they're doing.
    • Whitty's main source of lore comes from "Overhead", with him explaining what his relationship with Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest is, why he's in hiding and why he quit singing.
    • Hex, meanwhile, has "R.A.M.", which brings up his main philosophy in life, as well as his previous encounters.
    • Garcello has two songs like this. "Nerves" has him explain how he got addicted to his cigarettes, and "Release" instead brings up how important Annie is to him.
  • Motor Mouth: Boyfriend ends up stuck like this after battling with Whitty. The episode with Hex mentions that he had to endure weeks of therapy to cure it. During "Run", both Boyfriend and Bob spit lore at each other at an inhumanly fast pace. The audience wouldn't understand them if it weren't for the subtitles.
  • Mythology Gag: The opening scene in "Unloaded" starts with the line, "September 10th, 2004", which is the release date of the original Pico Unloaded animation.
  • Nice Character, Mean Actor: Implied with Boyfriend. During the "We're Coming Back" song at the end of the season 1 compilation, Boyfriend rudely hits RecD with his cold iced coffee when he asked for frigid. Then RecD reveals that he challenged Boyfriend to a rap battle and lost. During said rap battle, Boyfriend is shown to consider the non-FNF characters as his "filler".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Girlfriend tells Boyfriend about the cursed nature of Hating Simulator after he puts the disc in and starts the game.
Boyfriend: Is it one of those cursed games that sucks you inside it or something?
    Girlfriend: Yeah.
Boyfriend: Probably should've waited for your answer before I put it in the console—
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: After "Stress", Tankman is about to kill Boyfriend, but then all the guns in his army vanish and are teleported to "Hating Simulator", all thanks to Girlfriend's parents.
Daddy Dearest: My little baby girl!
    Mommy Mearest: Sweetie!
Girlfriend: Aww, guys! You saved me! And The Boyfriend, too!
Daddy Dearest: *he and Mommy glare at Boyfriend* Unfortunately...
  • Ninja Prop: Bob stabs Ron to death with his own text box.
  • Not-So-Innocent Whistle: Daddy Dearest does this when his daughter figures out that he lied to her about humans loving plane crashes.
  • Oblivious to Love: Sarvente spent centuries unaware that Ruv was helping her because he was in love with her and didn't have any interest in saving anyone, something Boyfriend figures out within minutes of meeting Ruv.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: Hex displays one after Boyfriend points out he punched out Daddy Dearest.
  • Only Friend: Annie was the only one who didn't run away after being offered cursed cigarettes by Garcello, and tried to help him break his curse.
  • Orwellian Retcon: "Casanova" originally had Amor appear as a cameo. When the episode was remade in the Season 1 compilation, he was replaced with Tama due to controversy regarding him.
  • Painting the Medium: RecD doing impressions of the other characters in the Selever episode is denoted by a colourless version of the character portrait.
  • Potty Emergency: Just like in the original, the plot of Mid Fight Masses has Boyfriend aching to go to the bathroom, (the reason here being because he drank too much soda at a restaurant with a locked bathroom) and wandering into Sarv's church with Girlfriend just to find one. He makes it just in time following Gospel, with a little help (and threatening) from Ruv.
  • Prequel: This is Daddy Dearest's remastered week, setting up just how The Boyfriend and The Girlfriend met, and sets the series from there. The episode about Twinsomnia is also a prequel to the series, stated by RecD to be "Episode Zero" of FNF With Lyrics.
  • Produce Pelting: In the Selever episode, one universe sees Pico being pelted with celery, tomatoes, garbage, and TNT due to not being funny.
  • Production Foreshadowing: Sarvente looks into Boyfriend's future and sees him struggling against Demon Tricky in particular, getting a nasty gash on his arm from the clown's fire notes.
  • Psycho Supporter: Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest helped Whitty become famous, but eventually, he "blew it" during a concert. The Dearests, however, covered up the incident, got Whitty a record deal and made him perform the same song again, even though he didn't want to. The same thing happened, and Whitty went on the run. Boyfriend, however, questions whether Daddy and Mommy really had no regard for Whitty's well-being, or whether they simply wanted him to be the best he could be. This takes on a much darker tone when it turns out that "blew it" is a Deadly Euphemism for a literal explosion that likely claimed lives. Apparently, this happens every time Whitty goes Ballistic.
Whitty: They both pressured me into it; gave my best, but then I blew it!
Boyfriend: So you tried to sing but it was baited; had no practice, did they hate it?
Whitty: That's the part that shocked me, everyone was cheerin' for me! Mom said I had style (Ooh, go on!), and Dad said no one could ignore me! (What else?) Musta covered up the awful end I gave to em, then before I knew it (No way!), we got big, they got me my own album! (By yourself?)
  • Rage Against the Author: Selever attempts to mess around with RecD in his episode. RecD responds in kind.
RecD (doing a Selever impression): Hi, I'm selever [sic] and I'm a big baby who compensates for a lack of parental love with profanity!
  • Rage Breaking Point: Just like in Vs Whitty proper, Whitty undergoes this in "Ballistic". In this case, it's because The Boyfriend doesn't really care about Whitty's backstory and wants to see his "Unbeatable Technique".
Whitty: You... After I shared all that... You're still making me do it??? *Proceeds to unleash his famous Skyward Scream*
  • Rewatch Bonus: At the beginning of "Defeat & Finale With Lyrics", the number "13542" is shown before the events kick in, which would be odd enough on its own. But after Girlfriend reveals to Black that she knows what he did to Boyfriend 13,541 times in succession, albeit with no memory of succeeding, it suddenly adds up, making Black's Wham Lines hit harder.
  • Running Gag: The massive line of opponents facing off with the Boyfriend. Included in it are Jevil, Furret, and King Dedede, referencing some of RecD's previous works. They are never given speaking roles until the Week 7 teaser where Tankman butts in.
    • Giorno Giovanna is usually somewhere in the background of each video. He's seen as an actor in The Ooga Booga, on the back of Boyfriend's hat, on the mirror of Mommy Mearest's limo, as a poster in Girlfriend's room, and on one of the advertisements at the basketball court. It's likely the signature of Kermo Giovanna, an artist who works on these videos.
    • Whenever Daddy Dearest appears, the subtitles usually say some variant of "Daddy Dearest Appearest".
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Boyfriend says this word-for-word to Black when mentioning he wouldn't go ahead with Among Us's rules for the 51st time in a row. The "money" in question? The beans that serve as the currency in Among Us, which are quickly absorbed by "Dr. Roboyfriend's Mean Bean Machine" and used to purchase a microphone.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • In "Whitty FULL WEEK WITH LYRICS", as Ballistic nears its end, Boyfriend decides it's time that he and Girlfriend left Whitty to his devices...after riling him up in first place and not taking the chance to get the hell out of there when he had the chance. Whitty's quick to state that he wouldn't get far before he "blew it" again.
    • Happened twice in "Week 7 (TANKMEN) WITH LYRICS":
      • When Pico's trying to shoot Sgt. John Captain, he runs away once he realized he ran out of bullets.
    • Later in the same video, Sgt. John Captain drove away using his tank after GF's parents took away the Tankmen's guns, but not before giving another roast on YouTube.
Tankman: That's how you solve everything, YouTube? Take away all the guns? Why am I not surprised? Screw this. I'm headin' back to Newgrounds.
  • Self-Deprecation: In "Bob and Ron WITH LYRICS", Boyfiend's Stylistic Suck backstory, which involves Boyfriend writing out Bob's own lore and replacing it with his own, is an unsubtle poke to the series' tendancy to change the characters and their backstories. Bob, who is reletively unchanged from his canon self, even calls it out.
Bob: Can't you a write single line without inserting your own lore whenever you start to sing?
  • Shout-Out: According to Tom, Girlfriend's gravity manipulation powers are based on The Lich from Adventure Time.
  • Sore Loser: After "Too Slow", Sonic.exe refuses to believe he's lost since he always wins and proceeds to attempt to kill them. Girlfriend tauntingly lampshades this.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: If the ending gag in "Tankmen WITH LYRICS" is anything go by; Senpai is still alive after Spirit breaks free from him, in a humorous aside gag as he wonders why it's raining guns in his world. Possibly justified by Senpai being a video game character.
  • Speaking Simlish: Averted. Boyfriend speaks full English, and any of his beep and bop dialogue is often used to stand in for sick burns, which don't always work. Whitty calls him out on it. Played straight during Twinsomnia WITH LYRICS, where BF doesn't speak in English as usual. This is explained by Monster (as the Boogeyman) giving him nightmares about his high-pitched electronic voice, which discourages him from talking normally.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": BF and GF are referred to as "The Boyfriend" and "The Girlfriend".Per Word of God, it's because it's funny.
  • Stealth Pun: After "Ballistic", Carol comes in to literally "defuse the situation".
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Whitty's supposed "unbeatable technique" that has never been recorded turns out to be self-destructing, much to Boyfriend's panic.
Whitty: I'm overheating. Can't stop. About to turn this place into the Grand Canyon. Just like the venue. And the recording studio.
Boyfriend: Wait/// That's what you meant when you said you "blew it"? That's why nobody's ever recorded your "unbeatable technique"? That's why you're hiding here???
Whitty: I'd apologize, but this is what you wanted. So... How about you go die in a ditch instead?!
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The ending to "UNLOADED WITH LYRICS". A story about how you and your friends basically committed mass murder is not the type of story you'd want to share with kids. The Boyfriend even calls Pico out on this:
Boyfriend: "Pico! What have I told you about telling your war stories to literal children?"
  • Take That!:
    • Per what The Girlfriend says, Hell Twitter is just regular Twitter.
    • Boyfiend's backstory, which is made up of Stylistic Suck, references the many, many mods based on Pibby that purely take a random character and infect them with The Darkness, via a corrupted Huggy Wuggy (and Sonic.exe) that shows up for no reason to fight Boyfiend.
    • After Boyfriend mentions that the real Sonic sang into a microphone at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit), he goes into a long explanation on the inconsistency of the Sonic lore, including the two worlds canon and Classic Sonic being from both the past and another dimension.
  • Title Drop: Quite a few of them, mostly later on in the series:
Boyfriend: Every rose has got its Thorns, and guess what, you just pricked yourself touchin' mine!
Boyfriend: Hype so strong you taste it! Heartbeat pounding with funk! Got one chance, don't waste it! Jump up, slam down and Dunk!
Hex: Hello, World, your best bot Hex is calling!
Tankman: (as the song opens up) Now the most important thing about Guns is have one! Never give it up, soldier!
Tankman: You don't understand the kind of Stress this army job'll give ya! Another day, another death, and you wonder who's gonna outlive ya!
Garcello: Got a Headache, smoke so much I get sick!
Garcello: Don't want Annie to worry now, she's been working so hard, now that I'm past curing, this can be her big Release
Garcello: Time's movin' slowly, my vision is Fading… but until I go, we can keep serenading, friend…
Sarvente: Have a simple point: Worship God and you'll join him in heaven, ever-happy!
Daddy Dearest: Diggin' this back and forth - your rhymes are Fresh, kid!
Mommy Mearest: Don't think you got the right build for that, heartthrobs don't usually stand four feet High!
Sonic.exe: Guess away, you’ll never know! I’ll kill you first! You’re just Too Slow!
Boyfriend: Time for you to find out what Defeat tastes like.
Boyfriend: This is the Finale, gonna make it past the finish line!
  • Trademark Favorite Food: As revealed in "Smoke 'Em Out Struggle With Lyrics", Garcello loved to eat Cheez-Its, and would always devour an entire bowl of them when he lived with Annie.
  • Tranquil Fury: Tankman after "Stress", where he thinks Boyfriend was sent by the enemy captain to steal the first half of Titanic (1997).
Tankman: You know, I hadn't even realized you were a dirty little pawn until you started grillin' me for info. You really had me thinking' you were just a dumb kid with bad luck and a good heart. But I should've known better. This is war. And in war, people die. (Dramatic Gun Cock) People like you.
  • Transformation Horror: Aside from Pump's transformation being quick and played for laughs, all the other character transformations into food monsters by Monster are slowly drawn out to look all the more disturbing.
  • The Unfought: Parodied. As Boyfriend and Girlfriend leave Bob's world in a hurry, Little Man begs them to fight him only to get squashed under their feet.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • Despite her methods and literally being that world's version of Satan, Sarvente wasn't wrong when she told The Boyfriend that The Girlfriend isn't as trustworthy as she appears and that dating her has caused him (will continue to cause him) nothing but trouble in the long run. Sarvente even claims that Girlfriend is really a toxic influence over him and is secretly planning to take his soul. When Boyfriend asks Girlfriend if it's not true at the end of the video, she has nothing but awkward silence and then kisses Boyfriend to make him forget the whole thing.
    • At the end of "Defeat & Finale With Lyrics", Girlfriend reveals that Boyfriend had been killed and revived over 13,000 times by that point, mentioning that she doesn't want to lose another boyfriend. Black calls her out on this, foreshadowing the possibility that Boyfriend will eventually catch on and turn away from her as a result. And worse, she knows this, meaning Black was correct in giving her this "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Visual Pun: The end of TANKMEN WITH LYRICS has Tankman pop up during the credits Duck Hunt-style with The Behemoth's chicken mascot and says "cock joke". Considering "cock" is also another name for a chicken, this is indeed a "cock joke."
  • Vocal Evolution: Boyfriend went from sounding like a high-pitched attempt at a kid voice to having a much more electronic sounding voice fitting his source game. This is because RecD filters his voice for Boyfriend, and when he doesn't filter it, it sounds more like the way Boyfriend used to sound.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Sarvente only intends to ensure Boyfriend will go to heaven, seeing him as a poor lost soul. However, she won't take no for an answer.
  • Wham Line: In "Glitcher", showing who exactly sent the virus that corrupted Hex.
Hacker: This thing found the bomb we've been huntin' down...
Boyfriend: What? You're after Whitty? You want his sound?
Hacker: You don't need to know why we need him!
Boyfriend: Drop the robot, give it up, leave him!
Hacker: You can have him, this is better…
Boyfriend: We just took you down together!
Hacker: Thanks for your help, this'll be a big blast!
Boyfriend: Go funk yourself, this hack best be your last!
Hacker: Goodbye for now, foolish counterhacker... This has been very... enlightening...
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • In the week featuring Whitty, Whitty first calls out Boyfriend for not caring about his backstory and only focusing on learning his "Unbeatable Technique" before getting more infuriated. Carol, after defusing Whitty, calls out Boyfriend for picking on Whitty.
Carol: And you! I'm surprised at you The Boyfriend. Picking on someone who's just trying to live their life. You're no better than that "Daddy Dearest" you keep on fighting!
Boyfriend: (speaking very fast) But I just wanted to witness his unbeatable technique so that I could copy it and—
Carol: And let it destroy your life and career, too? Well, it's a good thing I was there to check in on him or you very well might have.
    • Too Slow has Boyfriend, thinking he could save both him and Girlfriend, grab a blue ring to teleport them out of here. Unfortunately, it ends up only teleporting him, leaving Girlfriend and Sonic.exe behind, with them both disgusted by the idea he left his girlfriend to die. Yes, even Sonic.exe finds that too cruel.
Girlfriend: Did...Did Boyfriend just leave me to die??
      Sonic.exe: I know, right?
  • With Lyrics: It's a series of lyrical covers of songs from base FNF and more popular mods.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Impiled with Ruv. His threat to beat up Girlfriend alongside Boyfriend should the latter lose is replaced with him deciding to break both of Boyfriend’s legs instead of just one, and all other threats of violence are aimed solely at Boyfriend.
  • You Are Worth Hell: Boyfriend to Girlfriend, quite literally during the Mid Fight Masses video.
  • You Can Talk?: The alternate Ruv is initially shocked when he hears RecD's Boyfriend speaking English. This is because his universe's Boyfriend is more similar to the canon Boyfriend in being the Elective Unintelligible, both when speaking and singing, which RecD's Boyfriend lampshades as being "one of those Boyfriends".
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Sarvente in the Mid Fight Masses video resorts to using her demonic magic to show Boyfriend Hell - as in, actual hell - during her last stand in Gospel. And he still isn't convinced to leave Girlfriend behind. Sarvente is dumbfounded, and her final verses are her essentially backing down from just how brazen (or stupid) he is.
  • You No Take Candle: Ruv talks like this, given that English is his second language and he's not very good at speaking it. This results in neither him or the alternate Ruv being able to sing each other's versions of "Zavodila" well, as the alternate Ruv has a good grasp on English, meaning FNFWL Ruv is a few syllables behind and JS Ruv is a few syllables ahead.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Sonic.exe says this trope verbatim during Too Slow.
Sonic.exe: "I'll admit that you've come the farthest/Mess up here and your soul is mine!"
