Are you ready? Cuz Hex's always ready!

VS Hex Mod is a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod created by YingYang48 and released in 2021. In it, Boyfriend raps with Hex, a friendly robot who's not interested in Girlfriend (for once). He'd rather play basketball instead, or in this case, sing some songs with Boyfriend.

In the Weekend update, Daddy Dearest is hosting an award show, inviting Boyfriend, even though the latter doesn't understand why. Moreover, Hex is there as well, and the two are tasked with singing a few songs together. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

It can be found on Gamebanana.

Song List

    Week X
  1. "Dunk"
  2. "R.A.M."
  3. "Hello World"
  4. "Glitcher"

    Weekend X
  1. "Cooling"
  2. "Detected"

    Freeplay Exclusive
  1. "Encore"
  2. "Glitcher (remix)"
  3. "Java"
  4. "LCD"

This game provides examples of:

  • All There in the Manual: While Hex makes reference to him during Weekend X, Hex's entire backstory and his relationship with the Rich Guy isn't present in the mod itself, and is only known through things YingYang48 has said.
  • Amazing Technicolor Battlefield: While the first three songs in Week X feature a traditional passage of time from noon, to sunset, to night, "Glitcher" instead has the sky converted to a blue screen of death, and fades between this and a Tron-esque Art Shift that depicts the Infected Hex and Boyfriend standing in cyberspace.
  • Anti-Frustration Features: "Encore" and "Java" have an instrumental lead in before the song begins proper, along with the option to skip straight to the song if the player would like.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Boyfriend, in response to IRIS's remark on if they're ready to face off against them, borrows Hex's "I'm always ready." saying.
  • The Cameo: The crowd for the Weekend update is composed of characters from other mods, such as Whitty, Tricky, Tabi, Carol, and Hatsune Miku.
  • Computer Virus: The last song of the Week X, "Glitcher", has Hex catch a virus as he used too much processing power in the first three rounds, and it's up to the Boyfriend to sing enough notes that Hex crashes and forces a safety scan. The virus returns in the Weekend update to completely over take Hex after the song "Cooling", being a bug from the Underworld media conglomerate IRIS Co. Ltd.
  • Canon Welding:
    • The opening cutscene for the mod alludes to the events of Vs. Whitty, and Whitty and Hex themselves are best friends, as stated in the Gallery.
    • Hex is a huge fan of Hatsune Miku; Ying's notes in the Gallery reveal that he got the idea for it after seeing Hex's cameo in Concert Conundrum.
  • Concept Art Gallery: The Weekend update includes a gallery that can be viewed after completing Weekend X, and has various concepts for the mod alongside other drawings of Hex, each with a note from the creator of the mod.
  • Creator Cameo:
    • YingYang48 appears in the crowd during "Cooling" and "Detected".
    • In "LCD", the creators of the original Friday Night Funkin' cameo as members of the crowd.
  • Cute Machines: Hex, of course!
  • Demonic Possession: In Weekend X, the "virus" infecting Hex is revealed to actually be a hacking by IRIS to take control of him to get to Girlfriend and her father. In "Detected", they succeed, and Hex loses all control of his body until it leaves, only being able to hear what's going on around him.
  • Evil, Inc.: IRIS is a large media corporation from the depths of the Underworld; it's unclear what they do exactly, but Daddy Dearest broke off a partnership with them because even he thought they were crazy, and the CEO has held a personal grudge against him ever since.
  • Funny Background Event:
    • In Week X, the various banners around the basketball court are cute references to either things or characters, such as the Hating Simulator, Monster, 4chan, Skid, etc.
    • The crowd becomes noticeably worried and freaked out during "Detected".
    • Some of the members of the crowd in "Glitcher (Remix)" are other TV Head Robots from the modding community, all of which have also been infected by IRIS.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: In the cutscene leading to "Glitcher", Hex has Boyfriend take his microphone so Boyfriend's singing will register inputs and overload him. In the song itself, Boyfriend is still using his own mic.
  • Idiosyncratic Difficulty Levels: Zigzagged: Week X and "Encore" have three difficulties, Easy, Normal, and Hard, while Weekend X and the bonus songs introduced in the Weekend update only have one difficulty, Funky.
  • Infodump: After Hex is completely taken over by IRIS in Weekend X, Daddy Dearest reveals what IRIS is, why they were targeting Hex, and his own personal history with the company. This is lampshaded by IRIS itself, calling his spiel "boring exposition".
  • Interface Screw: In "Detected", the arrow strums constantly move all over the place, from the simple left and up/down and right de-syncing at the start, to moving them off the screen to loop around, to re-arranging the arrows in an entirely different orientation, all to mess with your mind something fierce. The only hope for reading what arrows you're supposed to press, aside from Trial-and-Error Gameplay, would be based on their color coordination. And even then, good luck.
  • Nice Guy: Unlike most other opponents from the base game or other mods, Hex is a friendly robot who wants to rap for fun and has no ill intent.
  • Numerical Theme Naming: Hex's name comes from "hexadecimal", otherwise known as base 16, which is a format for digits from 0 to F used in computing. Him wearing a shirt with a "16" on it is a further reference to it.
  • Papa Wolf: When an IRIS-controlled Hex lunges for Girlfriend, Daddy Dearest punches him so hard it sends him flying, and then threatens to destroy Hex just to get rid of it.
  • Portmantitle: The titles of the OSTs for the original and Weekend updates, Hextravaganza and Hexperience, come from combining Hex's name with "extravaganza" and "experience".
  • Punched Across the Room: Daddy Dearest socks an IRIS-controlled Hex in the cutscene before "Detected", sending him rocketing into a wall.
  • Pun-Based Title: As both this mod and the base game use the term "Week" to describe a set of songs in a level, the update that adds another two to the main story is thus referred to as the "Weekend".
  • Refuge in Audacity: In the beginning cutscene of Weekend X, Boyfriend notes how bold it is for Daddy Dearest to invite those he ultimately screwed over to the show, hap-hazarding a guess that with the promised money prizes they'll turn a blind eye.
  • Robot Athlete: Hex is a robot who plays basketball, using his skills as a calculating machine to play very effectively an efficiently.
  • Robot Buddy: Hex was explicitly created to be a companion for his original commissioner, the Rich Guy. After the Rich Guy passes away from natural causes, Hex remains as friendly and eager to have fun with others as ever.
  • Rule of Cool: In Ying's notes for the Corrupted Hex drawing, he wonders how a robot could even be corrupted, before deciding that the explanation doesn't really matter since the idea behind it is cool.
  • Sequel Hook: The Weekend update ends with a final cutscene where the CEO of IRIS and his assistant discuss what to do following their loss to Boyfriend, that they are far from done with him or Daddy Dearest, and that they still have their eyes on Hex.
  • Shout-Out:
    • In the opening cutscene for the main week, Boyfriend and Girlfriend allude to escaping from someone who looked "ballistic", referencing the events of the Vs. Whitty mod.
    • In the background of Week X, there's a green banner with the words ">implying" on it.
    • One of the drawings in the Gallery is Hex as a god, specifically inspired by the gods from Hades.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Unlike the original game, Boyfriend has full dialogue instead of beeps.
  • Taking You with Me: Defied. IRIS threatens to detonate Hex in the hopes of killing Daddy Dearest, but Daddy Dearest remarks that doing so would not salvage IRIS's reputation in the Underworld, which is not only ruined by their loss to Boyfriend, but is ultimately putting them out of business as they speak, to the point that even power stations that keep their operations running would soon enough halt their bombing attempt, convincing them to not bother.
  • TV Head Robot: Hex has a monitor for a head that displays the respective arrows or error screens when he's singing.
  • We Will Meet Again: IRIS' final words after "Detected" have them angrily stating that this is merely only one of their divisions and that their media empire will survive. Regardless of how it long takes, they swear they will return to seek vengeance on Boyfriend and Daddy Dearest.
  • A Winner Is You: In the first week, you only get one screen of text and an image for beating the four main songs, though it's still more than the original game and other mods, which have No Ending. Subverted in Weekend, which does have an ending.
