Kapi

VS. Kapi - Arcade Showdown, is a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod created by PaperKitty, bbpanzu (creator of VS Carol, VS Sky, VS Sunday, and The Date Week), and Mike Geno (who also composed the tracks for Mid-Fight Masses), notable for being the first mod to feature its opponent leave an angry phase. It was released on May 28th 2021.

On February 19th 2022, the mod got a massive overhaul in Version 2 which removed most of the story and cutscenes, redesigned Kapi and added brand new songs. The previous version's songs can still be accessed via Freeplay.

Boyfriend and Girlfriend enter the arcade when the former manages to meet up with an old friend from high school: an anthropomorphic cat named Kapi. Kapi, cocky and smug as he is, deems Boyfriend as nowhere cool enough to date his girl and wants some of her love, despite the two being completely different species. So, he challenges Boyfriend to a rap battle...except he's bringing his DanceDanceRevolution skills to the test against his old friend's microphone! Even with his failed efforts, he still doesn't want to go down so easily, but when his dance pad goes haywire, how will things unfold? It's time for Boyfriend to show him who's boss and prove that Kapi isn't the one for Girlfriend!

This mod contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Jerkass: In this mod, Girlfriend is perfectly fine breaking up with Boyfriend over him losing a match to Kapi - at least, according to Boyfriend's imagination, if the thought bubble around said scene is interpreted that way.
  • Badass Normal: Kapi is just a normal cat person who's very good at DanceDanceRevolution.
  • The Cameo:
  • Cross-Popping Veins: Kapi's left pose during Hairball contains one.
  • Guest Fighter: Aside from Mr. Game & Watch in Kapi's mod, Kapi himself appears as one in Times & Tribulations—Vs. Omega as one of the Cameo Battle opponents. In that mod, he's shown to be an older, bitter guitarist thanks to the Time Crash set by Boyfriend and Girlfriend, particularly wanting to kill the latter out of vengeance in an apocalyptic world. The achievement for beating his only song, "New Retro", even describes this future Kapi as the defender of said apocalyptic world.
  • Fully-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Kapi is one of these, with a hoodie, pants, and shoes. The Version 2 update adds a ballcap to go with his redesign.
  • Furry Reminder: During Nyaw, Kapi meows during certain parts of the song.
  • Imagine Spot: Losing to Kapi will cause Boyfriend to imagine a scenario where Girlfriend leaves him for Kapi. Retrying seems to snap him out of it.
  • Interspecies Romance: Kapi (a cat) and Boyfriend (a human) are fighting for the affections of Girlfriend (a demon).
  • Likes Older Women: Kapi wants to date Girlfriend who is a year above him.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: The fact Kapi uses a DDR pad for "rap fighting" results in an interesting effect: he almost never uses hold notes, whereas Boyfriend does frequently, indicating the DDR pad he's using is from a pre-MAX machine (which introduced Freeze Arrows). Not a drastic change, but still notable. There is only one time in the final song where Kapi does a hold note, but it still fits in-story because his board was breaking down, so even if it was possibly an oversight meta-wise it could be considered in-universe to be a literal board glitch.
  • Nonstandard Game Over:
    • In the original version, rather than simply being blue-balled, losing to Kapi treats you to a small scene in which Boyfriend imagines Girlfriend leaving him for Kapi.
    • In the remaster, there's a sprite of a white pixel heart breaking in half before a blue 25 cent coin slot appears offering you to retry. Pressing enter plays a coin inserting sound along with a retro jingle before restarting the song.
  • Queer Colors: Kapi's hoodie is pink, yellow, and blue, and according to Word of God, Kapi is pansexual.
  • Sore Loser: Kapi doesn't take repeated losses well, losing his temper in Hairball but somewhat calming down again for Nyaw.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Boyfriend, who is normally portrayed as either mute or The Unintelligible, speaks in clear English in the cutscenes throughout the whole main week. Justified, as he's talking to Kapi, who was his friend during high school, since Boyfriend would normally speak in beeps and boops to avoid talking to people that he doesn't know.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Despite the mod involving a cat-man rapping against a human guy over who gets to date a demon girl, there's still some notable realism abound. Specifically, unlike how Boyfriend and most other opponents can sing to their hearts content using mics without any problems, Kapi using a DDR board means that the increasingly intense tunes of their battling causes the board to start breaking down due to all the abuse. As a result, when he goes utterly HAM on it during the fourth song despite noting this, he ends up causing a power-outage in the entire arcade due to short-circuiting the board and blowing out the electricity.
  • Sweat Drop: Kapi's up pose during Hairball causes two of these to appear from his head.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Kapi clearly expected the Boyfriend to be a pushover, getting more and more annoyed as he can't definitively beat him in a match.
