Fanfic / Hellish Bells

“Charlie, it’s time for me to redeem my favor.”
“Oh! Okay. Soooo, what is it?”
Alastor’s smile changed subtly. “I would like your hand in marriage!”

Or: wherein Alastor forces Charlie into an engagement and drags Vaggie along for the ride.

Hellish Bells is a Hellaverse fanfiction written by Neo the Saiyan angel. The fic starts out specifically in the domain of Hazbin Hotel, but Helluva Boss slowly creeps in.

It starts off four years after the beginning of Hazbin Hotel. Alastor is finally calling in his favor! Unfortunately, it’s binding Charlie to him for eternity as a ploy to take over Hellnote . He isn’t heartless, of course. Vaggie can come along as well, if just to keep Charlie satiated. But through their facade of a relationship, Charlie starts to see the real Alastor. She vows to reach him even with Vaggie warning her it was pointless.

As they try to reach Alastor emotionally, things begin to turn behind the scenes. The two are dragged into a few mysteries, such as ‘Who did Alastor make a deal with?’ and ‘ Who is the Sin of Pride?’, culminating into a battle for Heaven and Hell themselves.

The work contains examples of:

  • Absurd Cutting Power: Durendal is the most magically sharp blade in existence.
  • Accent Relapse: When Alastor starts describing his backstory, Charlie notes that he not only drops his Radio Voice but also begins speaking with a slightly foreign accent she can't pinpoint, implying he's slipped back into a Cajun accentnote  compared to his familiar transatlantic one.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Vaggie says this watching Alastor’s petty plan to make Vox look like an idiot on-air.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: At the time that the fic was written, Alastor's official backstory of having been mistaken for a deer by a hunter while burying one of his victims and shot square in the head had yet to be explicitly confirmed or disproven by the actual show. In the fic, Alastor is shot in the head by his mother after she discovers he's a murderer.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
  • Adaptational Jerkass:
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While Paimon is still a force of ruthless authority amongst the Ars Goetia, he is portrayed as much more of a Reasonable Authority Figure than his only then-concurrent appearance in "The Circus" would suggest, since he's portrayed there as an abusive, neglectful dick of a dad.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: Downplayed. Charlie and Vaggie are still very much in love, but the fic is written very much from the perspective that their relationship in Season 1 of Hazbin Hotel was portrayed as too sterile, as they frequently display affection for one another, embrace in public and are suggested to have a healthy sex life.
  • Adaptational Sexuality:
    • Downplayed. In canon, Alastor is completely unaware of his own asexuality and external sources suggests that he merely thinks that he holds himself to Ridiculously High Relationship Standards. In the fic, he's very casual and almost flippant about his desire to refrain from personal intimacy with Charlie and Vaggie, and several characters openly label him as ace. It's also left ambiguous as to whether or not he's aromantic (but becomes less ambiguous as the story continues and he starts falling in love with his fiancees) when he's officially aromantic in canon despite it having not been explicitly stated by the point when the story was written.
    • Vaggie (who in the show is never suggested be anything other than entirely Sapphic) is implied to develop romantic but not sexual feelings toward Alastor.
  • Adaptational Sympathy: invoked The story runs off an extremely generous interpretation of Alastor's character which posits that he's really a tormented and conflicted soul who is physically prevented from redeeming himself and making meaningful emotional connections with others. All contemporary canon material available at the time suggested that Alastor was a scheming Card-Carrying Villain whose veneer of amicability was his own deliberate choice as a means to lull his prey into a false sense of security around him.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Leviathan is the Deadly Sin of Envy canonically (and would therefore presumably be on the side of Hell), whereas here it's depicted as a gigantic millipede monster working with Lilith's army.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The fic goes into a lot of detail about aspects of the Hellaverse which hadn't been explored or visited when it was written, most prominently with how it claims that the Ars Goetia are direct descendants of King Solomon and its use of the Beasts of the Apocalypse (Behemoth, Leviathan and Ziz).
  • Adaptation Name Change:
    • In the show, "Alastor" is Alastor's actual real-life first name. Here it's actually an alias for "Michael M. Reed II".
    • Zeezi is referred to by her pre-show release name of "Missi Zilla".
  • Adopted into Royalty: Alastor is adopted by Paimon and becomes Ars Goetia royalty, much to his annoyance.
  • Adult Adoptee: Alastor. He isn’t even given any options.
  • Ancient Artifact: Most are Judeo-Christian in origin, though some are completely fiction such as the Bridle of Ziz
  • Angel/Devil Shipping: In-universe. The fic is a romance between the diabolical schemer Alastor (though his machinations are significantly toned down from canon and he's made into more of a protagonist), the sweet and innocent Charlie, and her existing girlfriend Vaggie.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Vaggie talks and yells at Alastor, both unconscious and awake, making him promise not to purposely do something to make the golden strings appear again.
  • Anywhere but Their Lips: Vaggie and Charlie kiss Alastor mostly on the cheeks until the very edge of the Final Battle.
  • Archangel Michael: He’s discussed as being dead from his attempt to kill innocents with the holy blade Durendal. Those innocents were Lilith and Charlie.
  • Are We Getting This?: The 666 Hell-icopter has trouble with their camera when filming Alastor’s emotional breakdown.
  • Ate It All: Vaggie does this several times. At one point it’s subverted; at first they think she did it again when it was actually Andrealphus and his group.
  • Atomic F-Bomb: Charlie lets a MASSIVE one loose after another failed attempt to get Alastor to open up.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: Alastor, of course! Charlie and Vaggie sometimes don some older style clothes too for date nights.
  • Battle Aura: Charlie gains this, an aura of flames, as she gains more and more control of her powers.
  • Behemoth Battle: One happens on the climax between Missi Zilla and Ziz.
  • Berserk Button: Alastor’s is initially feeling any sort of care for anyone. Once Charlie and Vaggie finally prove to him that they do, indeed, love him and he can trust them with his growing feelings, his berserk button changes to hurting his loved ones in any way, shape, or form.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Lilith is one of the most beautiful women to have existed. She’s also the Big Bad.
  • Biblical Bad Guy: Leviathan, Ziz, Behemoth, The First Beast, and Lilith
  • Big Bad: Lilith is the ultimate big bad of the fic.
  • Big Eater: Vaggie. Some Ars Goetia get into this, such as Andrealphus and his lackeys when they interrupt Alastor, Charlie, and Vaggie’s first genuine date.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Know Creole or Hebrew? Creole appears sporadically as Alastor is a native speaker and Hebrew is the only language The First Beast speaks in save for its name in English.
  • Blinded by the Light: Purposely averted by Alastor and Charlie. Vaggie is immune to any light attacks including blinding while Charlie and Alastor train with Vaggie to get used to bright light.
  • Blood Magic: Many rituals in this ‘verse require blood. The biggest one in the fic that Alastor uses is actually a regeneration matrix from the Ars Goetia.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Alastor speculates this might be why Leviathan sides with Lilith even though she plans on enslaving and feasting on the survivors for eternity.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: Combined with How Do I Shot Web? for Alastor as Vaggie and Stolas train him on his new Ars Goetia powers, including flying and portal-making.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Katie Killjoy wets herself after Alastor almost eats her for slapping Charlie. She’s save by Charlie begging him to spare her.
  • Burning with Anger: Charlie bursts into flames from anger and despair when herself and Vaggie once again fail to reach Alastor. She even burns down the penthouse where she and Vaggie live. Accidentally, of course.
  • Byronic Hero: Alastor eventually qualifies, though he’s less ‘moody’ and more ‘murdery’.
  • Calm Before the Storm: Alastor, Charlie, and Vaggie have one last date night before The Climax.
  • Canon Foreigner:
    • While all known Ars Goetia family members in the canon Hellaverse are named demons from The Lesser Key of Solomon, there are appearances from a handful of Goetia invented out of whole cloth for the story not sourced from the Ars Goetia, such as Ta'Bak and Pratel. In particular, Alastor is suggested to be a reincarnation of Paimon's dead son Caim, who is in the Ars Goetia but not the Hellaverse.
    • Canonically, Lucifer is both the Sin of Pride and the King of Hell. In the fic, Pride is a separate character working for Lilith.
  • Carved Mark: Lilith carves a power-draining glyph into Lucifer’s back.
  • Chastity Couple: While Charlie and Vaggie are physically involved, Alastor has no interest in sex. Charlie and Vaggie respect that and are thrilled when he allows them to kiss him near the end.
  • The Chew Toy: Andrealphus becomes this, eventually being turned to stone twice, once by Paimon and once by Alastor
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Blitz when him and his crew end up fighting off a bunch of zombies as they try to get to Lilith.
  • Cooldown Hug: Charlie’s favorite way to calm Alastor down. Vaggie sometimes gets in on it as well.
  • Could This Happen to You?: Vox has one of his newspapers ask this question both during a very public high-class dinner date and during Alastor’s Freak Out.
  • Creepy Centipedes: Leviathan’s true form is a giant millipede who uses his hundreds of legs to painful effect.
  • Cue the Falling Object: Keenie’s business sign falls as Charlie presents their destination to Vaggie and Alastor. Alastor exclaims, “Classy!”.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Alastor’s fight with Adam ends with him vivisected and pinned to a roof like a frog while Alastor is elbows deep in his gut like the fight was a mere nuisance, which it was.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Lucifer is convinced that Alastor is just using Charlie to leverage power in Hell, especially against him, and is so worried that he ultimately breaks down crying about it.
  • Deal with the Devil: Even in the climax Alastor leverages his deals to the max.
    • Someone sold Alastor’s soul to a Wrath Demon when he was a baby for something. Eventually the Demons give it back.
    • Literally done as Lucifer makes a deal with Paimon to protect Charlie during the Final Battle.
  • Deflector Shields: Both Alastor and Vaggie can produce defensive shields, made of Dark Magic and White Magic respectively.
  • Delusions of Parental Love: Charlie knows for certain that Lilith loves her! How could she not, right? Right?
  • Devoured by the Horde: The zombie army tends to surround the defenders and eat them alive.
  • Disappeared Dad: Alastor’s father ditched him and his mother when he was a baby.
  • Dismemberment Is Cheap: Alastor loses an arm to his deal but easily replaces it with a shadow tentacle.
  • Dimensional Cutter: Durendal has the ability to cut the barrier between Heaven and Hell when fully unlocked for its wielder.
  • Distant Sequel: The fic takes place long after the supposed conclusion of hypothetical events that hadn't transpired in either Hazbin Hotel or Helluva Boss when it was written, such as Charlie negotiating the releases of Angel Dust and Husk's soul contracts, most of the original Hotel crew ascending to Heaven and Stella attempting to have Octavia and Blitzo assassinated after Striker failed to kill Stolas.
  • Divine Birds: The Ars Goetia is an entire society of bird-people (save for Alastor and his predecessor, Caim, who are more like perytons).
  • The Dragon: The Sin of Pride is this to Lilith.
  • Driving Question: Who did Alastor make a deal with, and how do you break that contract?
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Angel Dust, Husk, Sir Pentious and Niffty are revealed to have been killed in the destruction of the Heaven Embassy offscreen, with only Chrri Bomb surviving.
  • Elemental Powers: Some of the Lesser Key of Solomon Knights bend the elements to bring death and destruction to Earth.
  • Ethnicity Monarch: Vaggie becomes Queen of the Lesser Key of Solomon Knights for a year after an Eating Contest.
  • Exact Words: Alastor’s deals always are very specific about wording, whether too vague or too specific. Sair and his brood find out the hard way.
    • Lilith was also very specific in her deal with Alastor. Even defines the meaning of ‘success’ in relation to the topic at hand.
  • Extra Eyes: All high-tier Angels and some Ars Goetia like Vaggie and Alastor have extra eyes.
  • Fancy Dinner: Charlie and Vaggie arrange a date for them and Alastor to go to the classiest restaurant in the Pride Ring, Chez Couteaux. They purposely alert the Paparazzi to make Alastor look good.
  • Fantastic Nuke: Shove enough Angelic or Demonic energy into an attack can result in this. Sera lets loose several in her battle with Charlie, which results in the destruction of the Heaven Embassy.
  • Finger-Forced Smile: More like deal-forced. Part of Alastor’s deal requires him to constantly smile. If he doesn’t? It makes him. Painfully so.
  • First Kiss: Charlie is both Alastor and Vaggie’s first kiss. Alastor’s wasn’t so pleasant.
  • Flaming Sword: Durendal when it’s fully unleashed burns with a holy fire.
  • Flanderization: In canon, Sir Pentious only uses Sssssnake Talk when he's deliberately emphasizing a specific word for whatever reason. In the fic, every "s" sound that Pentious makes (no matter what the word may be) is accompanied by a drawn-out strand of "sss"'s.
  • Forged By The Elders: Twelve artefacts were crafted by the twelve Elders of Heaven. Only a few have been named, such as Durendal and the Spear of Longinus
  • Freak Out: The stress of feeling new emotions finally makes Alastor have a bit of Sanity Slippage when he’s fully confronted by the others’ feelings on the matter.
  • Freudian Excuse: Alastor is made more sympathetic by revealing that his father abandoned him at a young age and his mother killed him when she discovered he was a Serial Killer. It ends up working on Charlie and even Vaggie.
  • Fully-Embraced Fiend: Alastor tries claiming this several times, but Charlie and Vaggie see through to a man who believes I Am a Monster.
  • Functional Addict: A Sin can become addicted to the sin they represent and eat if they don’t regulate their intake from direct sin. Beelzebub rides the line while the Sin of Pride is a full-blown addict.
  • Gambit Roulette: A lot of Alastor’s plan arranged after it fell apart has tints of this, mitigated by his grimoire’s
  • Good Princess, Evil Queen
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Charlie and Vaggie decide to prove their love for Alastor by proposing to him. They end up proposing during the second trial in the fic in a very public fashion.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Alastor’s POV has scattered Creole words in his inner monologue.
  • Hates Being Touched: Alastor is touch-averse. It takes him the entire fic to become comfortable enough to cuddle with his partners.
  • Hates Their Parent: Alastor hates his father so much that he murders him and his new family.
  • Held Gaze: Alastor and Charlie have one before he finally allows her to kiss him.
  • Holding Hands: When Alastor doesn’t pull his hand away immediately was the first indication that Charlie was reaching him. Later on, it evolves to Intertwined Fingers.
  • Hollywood Board Games: Alastor introduces Vaggie and Charlie to Monopoly. He gets Vaggie to agree to a bet after he quits just before he won. Naturally, he smoked her in the second match.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Alastor allows Charlie and Vaggie, and ONLY Charlie and Vaggie, to hold his hand, hug him, and eventually kiss him by the end of the fic.
    • Also applies to Vaggie towards Alastor. Vaggie is a lesbian save for with Alastor.
  • Imagined Innuendo: Lucifer thinks they’re giving a Double Entendre when Charlie talks about having a cuddle pile with Alastor and Vaggie.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Asexual Alastor, lesbian Vaggie, and bisexual Charlie don’t care; they’re in love regardless.
  • Info Drop: Happens several times; small details can have big impacts.
  • Intimate Healing: Alastor and Vaggie have a moment together when Alastor asks for Vaggie to help him with his burn injuries from a Dangerous Forbidden Technique. That includes taking all of his clothes off so she can apply the lotion everywhere it needs to go.
  • Jazz: Featured heavily, especially during dinner dates.
  • Jerkass: Alastor. As the story progresses, he becomes more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, mostly with Charlie and Vaggie.
  • Judicial Wig: Alastor puts one on when he acts as judge for an ownership case on Loona.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: Vox. He gets the V tower taken away, his reputation is shot, and he ends up insulting an Ars Goetia on-air.
  • Kiss Diss: Alastor does this a few times to an overeager Charlie as he wasn’t ready for that step yet.
  • Knight Templar: While canon Alastor kills For the Evulz, the Hellish Bells Alastor killed in life only partly because he enjoyed it. He mostly thought he was making the world a better place, killing the scum of the Earth.
  • Lava Adds Awesome: Like Earthbenders, some Lesser Key of Solomon Knights can control lava. Pratel uses some to melt a hole in Behemoth’s face before it ate her.
  • Law Procedural: A couple of times in fic, a court case happens. For a shipfic that turns into a fight for existence, it’s weird that it happened twice, right?
  • Lip Losses: Alastor cuts off Adam’s lips during their fight, a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Liquid Courage: Alastor drinks rye whiskey, and downs quite a bit of it while telling Vaggie and Charlie about his life before his death.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: Alastor makes sure Leviathan is Deader than Dead and shatters his petrified form to rubble.
  • Loophole Abuse: This is how they break Alastor’s enslaving contract.
  • Love Confession: There are several in various degrees, culminating in a mutual cuddle pile. No, not a euphemism.
  • Magic Librarian: Vaggie becomes one when she becomes the Head Librarian for Hell’s library system. That’s how Alastor gets his hands on Ars Goetia spells.
  • Make the Dog Testify: Loona, while sapient, is still considered a pet when she takes the stand on her ownership lawsuit.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Alastor, of course! However, he’s using his plotting abilities For the Greater Good the more the plot advances.
  • Many-Faced Divinity: The First Beast is such a creature, with seven heads all connected sharing ten horns among them.
  • Mass Teleportation: Alastor helps transport the survivors of Lilith’s war in Heaven to the Pride Ring en masse with a portal from the Envy Ring.
  • Meaningful Rename: Angel Dust is only ever referred to as his birth name of "Anthony", suggesting that he dropped his old Stage Name upon Charlie buying his soul from Valentino and ascending to Heaven.
  • Morality Pet: Charlie and Vaggie act as some for Alastor.
  • More Dakka: Leviathan tries to overwhelm Alastor with a Bullet Hell of ice projectiles, green goo attacks, and a giant winding double-headed staff mace.
  • Mythology: Almost exclusively features Abrahamic religions with little bonus mythologies mixed in.
  • Noodle Incident: At some point Charlie ate so much sushi on a date that Vaggie and Alastor needed an umbrella to protect themselves.
  • N-Word Privileges:
    • Alastor is a mixed-race Louisiana Creole but normally speaks with an elegant refinement to his speech, which makes it very unsettling when he drops this slur nonchalantly while relating his childhood to Charlie and Vaggie.
    • Adam very shockingly defies this trope along with a host of other racial epithets directed at Alastor during their battlenote .
  • Offering a Hand: A very important indicator in-fic on relationships. Charlie takes both Alastor and Vaggie’s hands when she falls mid-dance, and Alastor’s rejection of Charlie’s help when the threads of his deal first appear to stop him from spilling the beans on his deal with Lilith
  • Official Kiss: While Charlie forced Alastor to kiss her earlier in the fic, the kiss they count is the one during their last dinner date before The Climax.
  • Offing the Offspring: Alastor’s mother murdered him on a hunting trip, presumably to stop him from murdering anyone else.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Durendal allows Charlie to use it and all its powers are unlocked for her use. Archangel Michael wielded it once as well, but when he tried to slaughter an innocent…
  • Our Giants Are Bigger: Biblical giants are released from the Cloud when Lilith conducts her war in Heaven.
  • Our Perytons Are Different: Caim, Paimon’s sixth son, and Alastor are both Ars Goetia with hooves for feet, extended snout-like faces, deer ears, and antlers, as well as a mixed body type between bird and deer.
  • Paper Talisman: After he learns Ars Goetia magic and transforms into one, Alastor uses these of the thin parchment scroll with seals on them version with a variety of different damaging effects.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: Lucifer would do ANYTHING to save Charlie from being forced to marry Alastor. Even after she decides she does want to marry him.
  • Patricide: Alastor murdered his father and his new family when he was twelve.
  • Penny Among Diamonds: Vaggie certainly knows this feeling after Alastor and Charlie are distracted away from her at Alastor’s hatching ceremony which most of the high-class Ars Goetia were attending.
  • Polyamory: The official main ship of the fic is Alastor/Charlie/Vaggie.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Charlie eventually unlocks this, drawing more of her latent power out. For some reason, they’re butterfly wings.
  • The Power of Blood: Alastor likes using blood. Some rituals even require it!
  • The Power of Trust: The relationship the trio build is based on this, especially with Alastor.
  • Primordial Tongue: High Lemegeton, which was the First Language of Creation itself.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: Alastor goes from an asexual conniving manipulator of a villain to a (still Asexual) member of a throuple with Charlie and Vaggie.
  • Public Domain Artifact: Many of the relics presented in-fic are of Judeo-Christian origin, especially the Twelve Artefacts of the Elders. Named so far are Durendal and the Spear of Longinus
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Generally, the higher in rank you get in Hell or Heaven, the more powerful they are.
  • Razor Floss: Alastor gains the ability to manipulate strings, both of the fate variety and the physical type that can cut through a lot of things, such as petrified flesh.
  • Real Men Cook: Alastor is an ace in the kitchen, especially when he cooks his mother’s recipes.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Charlie, Vaggie, and Alastor genuinely begin to date almost halfway through the fic.
  • Ritual Magic: Used heavily, with almost all use being Ars Goetia magic.
  • Romantic Fake–Real Turn: Alastor’s intention is to gain political power and try to get insurance on his deal with Lilith, but all three find themselves gaining real feelings for each other. Not much of a surprise with Vaggie and Charlie as they are an established couple.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Vaggie and Alastor after they become official Royal Consorts. Charlie starts picking up on doing more with her power as the fic goes on.
  • Sadly Mythtaken: In the Ars Goetia, Caim is a Great President of Hell who appears in the form of a humanoid thrush. In the fic, Caim (and by extension Alastor once he becomes an Ars Goetia) resemble deerlike perytons.
  • Sapient Pet: Hellhounds are considered pets/property until Alastor frees them by changing the Charters of Hell.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: As the Head of Hell after Charlie passes on some of her duties to himself and Vaggie, Alastor has carte blanche to do all sorts of things in relation to the Charters of Hell, especially related to the Ars Goetia. Even rewrite the Charters of Hell, unchanged since Hell came into being.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Keenie makes a run for it when herself and her partners are close to defeat.
  • Sdrawkcab Speech: Leviathan talks in reversed English, which Alastor notes sounds like a perversion of the language.
  • Seers: Alastor and Caim gain a bit of this power from their grimoire.
  • Shadow Walker: Alastor can travel anywhere in a Ring via shadows.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Alastor has a variety of snappy outfits throughout the fic. His body changes too much from transforming into an Ars Goetia to fit into them anymore. Luckily, Caim had his back.
  • Shout-Out: Typically the Holy Lance is referred to as either the Lance of Longinus or the Spear of Destiny, which makes it no coincidence that it's referred to here as the Spear of Longinus.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Alastor is willing to have children with Vaggie and Charlie, albeit physically as a last resort as he’s more sex repulsed than anything. They’re also the only ones he’s okay with touching him.
  • Slow Transformation: Mixed with Emergency Transformation; Alastor really didn’t expect it. It wasn’t even in the fine print!
  • Spared by the Adaptation: As is common in many Hazbin Hotel fan works, Adam was not truly Killed Off for Real by Niffty in "The Show Must Go On" and instead merely became a powerful Sinner imprisoned deep in the Pit.
  • Song of Many Emotions: Charlie, joined by Vaggie, try to reach Alastor through his emotional breakdown. They succeed.
  • Soul Eating: Alastor eats those who cross him or break a deal down to their very soul. Alastor still lets them exist if in constant agony and horror in his gut…
  • Squee: Charlie does this many, many times.
  • Super Mode: All three main characters receive power upgrades of some sort.
  • Sword Plant: Alastor does this with his cane when he’s waiting for Leviathan to make an appearance.
  • Taken for Granite: Stolas, Paimon, and Alastor can all literally petrify opponents with a stare.
  • Take Over the World: Lilith and the Sin of Pride’s ultimate goal is to conquer both Heaven and Hell to rule and feast on the pride of all inhabitants without inhibitions like making sure they live.
  • That Was Objectionable: No, Blitz, you can’t object just because the other guy’s a Jerkass.
  • The Roaring '20s: Food, dancing, and clothing are featured heavily in the first half of the fic as Charlie and Vaggie get closer to Alastor and who he is as a person.
  • Thinking Up Portals: High-tier Ars Goetia can create portals to travel through Hell. Alastor gains this ability when he fully transforms into an Ars Goetia.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: When Charlie has a walk through Alastor’s bayou, she has an imagine spot of him opening up to him after finding her from a frantic search. Of course it’s played straight.
  • Threads of Fate: Alastor can manipulate fate with the aid of his grimoire
  • Tomes of Prophecy and Fate: Paimon’s sons Caim and Alastor possess(ed) the Liber Mali Prophetiae, a book that in the right hands can help portend the future and strings to pull to achieve certain results. Technically a third had also used the grimoire, but screwed up very, very badly.
  • Tongue-Tied: Alastor's deal curses him with the inability to tell anyone that he made a deal with Lilith in the form of golden threads appearing upon him and rending his skin apart. At one point this costs him An Arm and a Leg.
  • Tonight, Someone Dies: Chapter 50 begins with a declaration from the author that many named characters will die.
  • Torture Technician: Alastor is noted to be one. Made painfully obvious with his torture and vivisection of Adam.
  • Training Montage: Specifically invoked by Charlie. Vaggie counters about how it doesn’t work that way.
  • Translator Microbes: When Vaggie ascends into a Throne she can suddenly understand and speak every language in existence.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Alastor started his murders when he was twelve.
  • Twitchy Eye: Alastor’s eye tends to twitch when he loses control of a situation or someone REALLY makes him angry.
  • Undead Mooks: Lilith raises the millennia of Sinners that threw themselves into the Pit into her own army.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: The antagonist is so loved that most simply don’t believe it’s them doing everything, including Charlie.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: All three of the main trio get super forms by the end of the fic.
  • War Is Hell: Named in-fic; it’s a multiple chapter names for The Climax.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Alastor struggles with the question and becomes overwhelmed at the thing in his chest, emotions, that he’s never felt before.
  • Wendigo: Alastor’s full Demon form before he transforms into a peryton-form Ars Goetia.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Caim from beyond the grave helps Alastor plan out things for the final battle. Alastor sets up many plans to make the war as biased towards their side as possible.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: After Lilith counters Alastor’s careful planning in the opening attack, the war devolves into this between them.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Higher-tier fallen Angels can use both Angelic and Demonic powers, such as Lucifer, Sera, and Lilith
  • Zerg Rush: A good chunk of Lilith’s army are mindless undead who overwhelm the protagonists with their numbers.
