The Protagonists

    Shinichi Sakurai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinichi_sakurai_1.png

Voiced by: Kenji Akabane (Japanese), Ricco Fajardo, David Matranganote  (English), Ivan Fernandez (Latin American Spanish)

The male lead, Sakurai is a third-year college student who'd rather spend time by himself if not for Uzaki's intrusions.

  • Achilles' Heel: Played for Laughs. During a summer festival, Uzaki knocks him down with a swing of her purse square to the jaw. He may be fit enough to cut glass on top of his abs, but the dude has a glass jaw.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet:
    • Somewhat downplayed since Sakurai's typical demeanor tends to put off others, but at his work, where he's more relaxed, he's extremely popular with housewives. Amusingly, this causes a big misunderstanding with Uzaki's mom, Tsuki, who believes that Sakurai must be a cougar chaser and is trying to get on with her too.
    • In Chapter 78, he's roped into going to a mixer date, and it turns out there are some girls in his own class that find him attractive, though they back off when they find out he's already dating Uzaki.
  • Covert Pervert: In Chapter 101, during a Journey to the Center of the Mind, Sakurai discovers his metaphoric shadow that represents his suppressed sexual desires, which awakened after he voluntarily gropes Uzaki's breasts.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Invoked. When he realizes his attraction towards Uzaki, he begins getting self-conscious and aghast at the fact that he'd let such a cute girl like her just roam around his apartment nilly-willy without recognizing the notion that she frequents said apartment because she wants to be with him.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: When he visits his mother and sees her carrying a baby, he first assumes she's working as a babysitter. It doesn't occur to him that said baby is his little sister, and his reaction upon finding out is priceless.
  • Face of a Thug: Despite being very mild-mannered, most of the cast has noted that Sakurai has a permanent piercing gaze that makes him intimidating to some people. In Chapter 12, Uzaki remarks that wearing sunglasses makes him look like a normal person since it covers his eyes. Additionally, Uzaki's mother can barely keep it together around him just because of how intimidating his glare is. In Chapter 31, she realizes she can actually be comfortable around him as long as he's not looking directly at her.
  • First Kiss: Gives one to Uzaki in Chapter 93. Then he passes out.
  • Gag Penis:
    • If Kiri's expression upon seeing a fully nude Sakurai in Chapter 57 is to be believed, then the latter is considerably packing.
    • This is taken to new heights in Chapter 84, as Fujio finally gets a look at it while in the sauna with Sakurai. And it’s apparently even larger than his own if his reaction is anything to go by. It also gets nicknamed "the Dragon" by Kiri and Fujio.
    • By Chapter 106, Hana finally sees how much he is packing prior to Their First Time, complete with a depiction of a dragon in the background. It was actually enough to make her hesitate for a bit.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • He loves dogs and cats.
    • Sakurai is a surprisingly sweet person, this being one of the reasons Uzaki is attracted to him. In spite of bitching to no end about it, he denies her nothing.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: He's a good two-plus head taller than Uzaki. It's not only that he's tall, but also, that she's tiny.
  • Hunk: He's tall, fit, and handsome, though apparently, his Face of a Thug detracts from it in-universe.
  • Ineffectual Loner: In Chapter 61, Sakaki derives from Uzaki's memories about Sakurai that, while being an athletic guy, Sakurai is not very good at sports that require teamwork precisely because he's bad at social interactions and activities that he can't completely control. His body and mind are his temples... but for him, it's wilderness outside. This partly explains why he's so bad at dealing with Uzaki, who makes things particularly chaotic for him.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Sakurai thinks that he's not well-put together enough to be with Uzaki.
  • In Vino Veritas:
    • When he first goes to Uzaki's home to meet her dad, the whole Uzaki family gets him collectively drunk, and after Uzaki and her dad brings him home, Uzaki goes with him to his apartment and he drunkenly states that he is under the impression that he's a bother towards her and that he wants to pull himself together for her sake.
    • The same incident makes him realize that he is very much attracted to Uzaki, and that she loves him back. However, even though he's consciously sound at the moment, he's too intoxicated to pull through and passes out. He remembers the whole thing afterward, though...
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he does get annoyed with Uzaki, over time, it is made clear that he likes being with her. He does his best to cheer her up when she's angry or depressed, even knowing he'll come to regret it later.
  • Last-Name Basis: He mentions that he finds it hard to call girls by their first names. He makes exceptions for Ami to avoid confusion with her father (since he's their boss at the café they work at), and for Tsuki and Yanagi, which brings no end of frustration to Uzaki. It turns out he doesn't have as much trouble using girls' first names as he thought, rather he has difficulties calling Uzaki by her first name because she's special to him.
  • Lethal Chef: At first, he couldn't cook anything to save his life. He gets better with Hana and Tsuki's help.
  • Loners Are Freaks: The reason why Uzaki always hangs out with Sakurai, despite his insistence he likes being alone.
  • Love Epiphany: In Chapter 69, Sakurai finally admits to himself that he loves Uzaki after picking up from previous cues that she is in love with him herself, and after Mr. Asai and Sakaki outright tell him that all his friends and them have known of that very fact for a long time.
  • Mr. Fanservice: It is constantly made clear that he has a fit body.
  • Non-Action Guy: Even though he's fit, Sakurai is a terrible fighter. This is one of the reasons he doesn't want to inherit his family's dojo. The dude certainly didn't inherit his mom's chops.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • This does surface at times when it comes to cats.
    • He freaks out for a moment in Chapter 60 when he comes home after being away at college for two years and discovers that he has an eight-month-old baby sister.
  • Official Couple: Sakurai and Uzaki start dating in Chapter 73.
  • Only Sane Man: He is the Straight Man to Uzaki's antics.
  • Obliviously Beautiful: Sakurai is unaware of how attractive he is, and he doesn't realize that he's employed at the café precisely because he brings in the ladies. Both Sakurai and Uzaki tend to completely underestimate his popularity, with Sakaki even noting on one occasion that he's known for his looks around campus.
  • Oblivious to Love: He realizes that he loves Uzaki and that she reciprocates hilariously late in the game, so much so that his friends vent their frustrations at him because it was that much obvious.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He hardly ever smiles, which is something that Uzaki happily takes jabs at.
  • Practically Different Generations: He's got a baby sister who's less than a year old, while he's already in his early twenties.
  • The Shut-In: He prefers to spend his free time relaxing at home and playing games. Uzaki and Sakaki try to get him to be more outgoing when they can.
  • The Stoic: One of the aspects of Sakurai's personality that Uzaki finds most annoying is his tendency for underwhelming responses. Both Ami and her father agree with her there: when they had a surprise party to celebrate his 20th birthday the first year he worked at their café, he politely and happily thanked them but they felt it was very understated.
  • Through His Stomach: One of Uzaki's tactics to woo Sakurai consisted of her learning how to cook, courtesy of her mom. This provides her with a great excuse to frequent his apartment.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Sakurai is not very good at team, contact, or combat sports because his focus lies elsewhere (swimming, climbing). He's an ace at fitness, but not so much at sports.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Uzaki, as they're very prone to bickering.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Sakurai is cripplingly terrified of horror stuff, and during a test of courage with his friends, he has a Heroic BSoD so bad that Uzaki has to bring him to safety by taking his hand. Ironically, when Uzaki tries to invoke this from him by making him watch a horror movie, she ends up being the frightened one, while Sakurai actually shows little to no major reaction to it.
  • Would Hit a Girl: While he never goes too far, he's not above physically retaliating on Uzaki when she goes too far with her antics. So far he has:
    • Smacked her in the head for trying to hypnotize him, since at first she just wants him to call her by her first name, but then starts making demands like buying her a new VR game.
    • Grabbed her nose and pulled it up for laughing at him in the cinema.
    • Thrown her out of the café where he works, for making fun of him trying to be polite and professional.
    • The time he spanked her when her panties got exposed while she was stuck in the bush. This one was more of a spur-of-the-moment reaction, though.

    Hana Uzaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hana_uzaki.png

Voiced by: Naomi Ozora (Japanese), Monica Rial (English), Dayana Santiaguillo (Latin American Spanish)

Uzaki is Sakurai's markedly buxom underclassman he knew back in high school. An enthusiastic and intrusive girl, when she sees that he lazes around a lot, she decides to take it upon herself to get involved in Sakurai's life, regardless of whether he likes it or not.

  • Annoying Laugh: Her high-pitched cackle is one of the (many) things that get on Sakurai's nerves. More than once he retaliates physically to shut her up when she's laughing at him, which happens very often.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: In Chapter 58, Sakurai asks her to take off her jacket, and she nervously complies... only to realize he just wanted to make sure she was wearing one of the shirts he'd been looking for. She's so upset about it that she decides to get back at him by making him watch a horror movie together with her... which ironically works more on her than him.
  • Bad Liar: Uzaki always turns her head to the right when telling a lie, though her father's the only one to notice her habit.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Uzaki sought to become Sakurai's friend because back in high school he went out of his way to teach her how to swim, and she found him to be doting and kind in spite of his menacing appearance.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Mistaking her for an elementary or middle school student is enough to get her riled up.
    • Asking her actual height. Yanagi says that Hana often fights with Kiri due to height-related issues, and she gives Sakurai one hell of a Death Glare for trying to find out her actual height.
    • Telling her that mint chocolate tastes like toothpaste will make her lose her temper.
  • Boob-Based Gag: Uzaki's giant breasts are frequently the subject of humor, often getting in her way or inconveniencing Sakurai in some way. They also look especially comical compared to her overall short stature and slender build.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She has the shortest hair amongst the female cast, which goes with her tomboyish personality.
  • Butt-Monkey: Being a woman doesn't get her spared from physical humor, sometimes inflicted by her senpai himself.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Her breasts have a tendency to leave people in awe due to their size. Ami refers to them as weapons-grade after seeing them while they are changing into their swimsuits. It's even emphasized by her Fun T-Shirt, which says "Sugoi Dekai".note
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Sakurai takes Uzaki out to dinner for her 20th birthday, and she has her first taste of alcohol with him, which goes awful for both of them, as she gets blackout drunk and vomits on his futon as he's trying to nurse her into sobriety. She's just too small for that much liquor. Though her tolerance is not quite determined, as she's never drunk before, her self-control goes off the rails, setting a bad precedent for herself. This happens to be Truth in Television, as first, she's never drunk before, and second, she's a small young woman, both contributing to low alcohol tolerance.
  • Character Development: She mellowed out considerably once she and Sakurai officially become an item, to the point her namesake, Uzaki (annoying), is almost forsaken in order for her and Sakurai to just act like sweethearts.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. Normally in a romance slice-of-life series like this, this aspect of the character would be used for comedy or drama. She doesn't even notice until later that other girls would be into Sakurai, and because she doesn't have a love rival, she's not spurred on to act. Sakaki points this out which does lead to small developments but not enough. Hilariously, the first person she gets jealous of is her own mother after Sakurai inadvertently insulted her when he praised the latter's kind personality. This gets exploited by Yanagi, who asks to hang out with Sakurai during Christmas after Hana's teasing made him banish her from his apartment temporarily. Hana rashly responds to this by inviting Sakurai over, which would have caused problems but ends up pushing their relationship forward.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Uzaki has one that’s visible in almost every shot, although the way it’s drawn and colored makes it look like part of her lip, though the anime's second season shows it as a normal fang. Having a cat-like fang does illustrate her playful and capricious personality.
  • Deconstructed Trope: Uzaki being a huge tease towards Sakurai is one of the main sources of humor in the series, pretty much the main focus early on and the title’s namesake, but as the series progresses and it becomes more evident Uzaki is in love with Sakurai, Uzaki's behavior is shown to be one of the primary obstacles against her feelings ever being noticed by Sakurai. Sakaki in particular notes that no matter how funny the dynamic of being annoying towards her senpai is, it is not doing any favors towards their relationship becoming more than friends who engage in friendly banter.
  • Didn't See That Coming: When she and Sakurai became an item, she didn't quite count on the homework that came with it, namely, that Sakurai is such a newbie about love that she became the lead in the relationship. Dude has two left hands and two left feet when it comes to dating and relationships, though she takes it in stride because she's elated to be with him.
  • Everyone Can See It: Uzaki spends time with Sakurai, plays video games with him, learns to cook for him, has basically free-roam privileges to access his apartment, and enjoys being with him most of the time. It's not until hilariously later that Sakurai realizes that she may like him from these multiple, multiple hints.
  • First Kiss: Gets one from Sakurai in Chapter 93.
  • Friend to All Children: She's popular with lots of kids whose mothers often bring them to the café from kindergarten, since she plays with them while their mothers talk.
  • Forgiving the Accidental Pervert: While she loves to annoy the hell out of her senpai, whenever they end up in a compromising position, like grabbing her boobs or using her as a body pillow while sleeping, she never reacts violently. It may be because part of her feels she deserves it for annoying him, and because she knows it's not his fault.
  • The Gadfly: Uzaki gets off of provoking her senpai whenever the opportunity presents itself.
  • Gamer Chick: Sakurai likes playing video games, and Uzaki likes to do so too. The narration's portrayal of their respective ability at gaming compared against each other goes back and forth, though Uzaki of course likes to be obnoxious whenever she wins.
  • Genki Girl: Uzaki is very energetic and peppy, much to the annoyance of Sakurai. One bonus chapter reveals she starts her mornings drowsy like everyone else... and lights up after seeing Sakurai.
  • Height Angst: Calling Uzaki short is a quick way to get her shouting at you.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Whenever asked about the subject of romance between her and Sakurai, Uzaki denies any sort of feelings towards him, insisting that the only reason she even hangs out with him is that he's a loner and she feels as if it's her duty to make sure he's not left alone, even going so far as to say that he's in love with her and can't keep his hands off her.note  She takes this to an almost absurd degree when she finds out that Sakurai is leaving after he graduates in two years. It's to the point that not only does her father get rather miffed about her denial, but both Sakaki and Ami, who were supporting her, get royally pissed off at how much in denial she is.
  • Heroic BSoD: Any bad news about her precious break time causes her to become depressed.
  • Her Own Worst Enemy: A significant part of why Uzaki has such trouble attaining Sakurai's affection is both her teasing attitude and her pride. While Sakurai does show an interest in her, there's a part of him that can't stand her behavior. However, his mindset about her slowly changes the more they hang out together.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Uzaki likes to pester and hang around Sakurai not only because she's attracted to him, but also due to the fact that he'll default to being friendless because of the way he is, and she cannot bear the thought of him being alone. She wants to be his friend just as much as she unconsciously wants to be with him romantically.
    • In spite of being hired at the café for shits and giggles, Uzaki proves her chops with her excellent management of children. It's not until later that it's revealed that she's the oldest of three siblings at home.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Sakurai, who is considerably taller than her.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She sometimes doesn't seem to realize that because of her assets, this would tend to make her appealing.
  • Insistent Terminology: Whenever she's asked about her feelings for Sakurai, she insists that it's him who is in love with her and not the other way around. Granted, she's not exactly wrong about that, but still.
  • Intimacy Via Horror: In Chapter 59, she ropes Sakurai into watching a horror movie with her as revenge for the Aren't You Going to Ravish Me? moment from the previous chapter. Surprisingly, he sits through the whole movie just fine, while she is the one who ends up terrified and clinging to him, and even begs him to let her stay at his place because she's too scared to walk home.
  • Irony: Despite the fact that she spent a considerable time being playful, coy, and careless around Sakurai, once they became an item, she had to turn into the mature party in the relationship in order to account for his complete lack of romantic acumen.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Uzaki is highly mischievous, blunt, and loves to mess with Sakurai, but she overall has a kind heart and when she realizes she has gone too far, she is quick to apologize and make up for her actions.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: While she typically gets away with it, sometimes her antics backfire on her, either accidentally or because Sakurai finds a way to retaliate.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Uzaki is extremely bubbly and energetic, and even though she has friends who actually want her around, she'd rather spend time with Sakurai, who would rather be a loner. She does this because she pities Sakurai for not having any friends and wants to break him out of his shell. Although later on it's revealed, much to her surprise, that Sakurai is not as friendless and antisocial as she thinks he is.
  • Meaningful Name: Uzaki sounds like "uzai", meaning "annoying".
  • Ms. Fanservice: Several lingering shots are made on her breasts, although it's obvious that the rest of her certainly isn't bad, either; especially while bikini-clad in the Beach Episode, and the rather detailed Panty Shot where she gets caught in some bushes while chasing down a cat. She is also the one to consistently find herself in compromising positions.
  • Not a Morning Person: A few times we get to see she isn't particularly enthusiastic when she gets up in the morning to go to college. But the moment she spots Sakurai, she immediately wakes up and becomes her usual Genki Girl self.
  • Official Couple: Sakurai and Uzaki start dating in Chapter 73.
    • Taken a step further in chapter 106.2, as she and Sakurai are now engaged to be married after he proposes and she accepts.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Whenever Uzaki isn't her usual obnoxious Genki Girl self, everyone knows that something must be very wrong. This is especially true for Sakurai, who can't stand seeing her actually mad at him or depressed, prompting him to apologize or try to cheer her up somehow.
  • Older Than They Look:
    • Uzaki is 19 but her short stature has people thinking she's much younger than that, with Sakurai's boss mistakes her for a middle school student, though a clear look at her chest convinces him she's definitely an adult. She turns 20 early on in the series.
    • This is exploited by her sister in Episode 9 of Season 2. A couple of guys begin hitting on them at the hot springs resort, and Yanagi drives them away by saying that both of them are middle school students. Hana is naturally very annoyed at this.
  • Playful Cat Smile: She sports one every once in a while when she's being particularly mischievous.
  • Pride: As much as she's ecstatic at the notion that Sakurai likes her, which happens to be a gross overestimation, she's unwilling to admit that she likes him way more than she cares to say. As such, it's indeed her pride that prevents her from admitting so, even though she gains absolutely nothing by keeping it to herself and it's more of an impediment to their progress.
  • Punny Name: The two kanji that compose Uzaki's family name are fairly normal: Space (宇) and Peninsula (崎), but they are read as "Uzaki", which is a reference to a slang based on the Japanese word for annoying (Urusai > Uzai). That is pretty much on point for the basic premise of the series: Annoying-chan wants to hang out.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: In Chapter 32, Episode 11 of the anime, she finds it rather embarrassing being forced to wear a Playboy Bunny outfit.
  • Serious Business: Choco-mint ice cream. She's willing to get into heated debates over whether it is the best flavor.
  • Short Teens, Tall Adults: Inverted. She's a 19-year-old (later 20) who stands at 150cm (4'11")... only to be revealed that she was lying the whole and is actually 145 cm (4'9"). However, she's certainly grown in other directions.
  • Shrinking Violet: Surprisingly, she was pretty shy and docile in high school, as the flashbacks reveal.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: So much so that once Sakurai realizes he loves her, he's surprised at how much time and effort she dedicated to him, even though she's more than cute enough to have options.
  • Smug Smiler: Uzaki often does this around Sakurai with the firm intention to rile him up.
  • Sore Loser: Uzaki gets very frustrated when Sakurai finds he likes bouldering while she is terrible at it and quickly exhausted, which is a pretty logical result from a short, busty woman like herself.
  • Supreme Chef: She's a pretty good cook, which she uses to her advantage.
  • The Tease: She's teased Sakurai about showering with her, got close to kissing him, and asked him if he was confessing his love for her, just to get a rise out of him. She insists she's joking each time.
  • That Came Out Wrong:
    • Uzaki has a habit of saying things within earshot of other people that can be taken the wrong way, much to Sakurai's embarrassment. In the first chapter, she gets angry at Sakurai for being cold towards her and yells at him for "toying her as he pleases" much to the horror of the people around them. Sakurai immediately yells back at her for making him sound like a monster.
    • There's the time she gets stuck in the bush, and she starts saying things like "My boobs will spill out" when her clothes get snared in it, and then she says "Senpai, are you pulling out? Hurry!" while Sakurai is holding her by the hips and, sure enough, there are a couple of women nearby seeing the whole thing.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave:
    • Sakurai is at a loss as to why Uzaki insists on pestering him for a considerable time until he realizes that she likes him romantically.
    • Uzaki makes a point of being present at Sakurai's apartment as much as she possibly can so that his resistance against her gradually diminishes.
    • One of Uzaki's more subtle methods to encroach Sakurai is by gradually bringing her own stuff into his apartment, which he chides her for. That is, until she offers to cook for him, leaving Sakurai no foothold to reclaim his lost space.
  • Tomboy: Played with, in behavior more than in athleticism. One of the reasons there's a distance between her and Sakurai is because she's not very girly, and is markedly brusque with him. Still, later, her more girly attributes start showing, such as her excellent cooking and taking care of him when he's sick.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Choco-mint ice cream is hers. And she'd make you know damn well not to diss it.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Fittingly, considering her mischievous nature.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Sakurai, as they're very prone to bickering.
  • You Keep Telling Yourself That: Uzaki has a tendency of belittling her own feelings towards Sakurai, which is one of the main reasons she stays in The Tease mode for a considerable time. It's later revealed that she wants him to fess up first, as he's the one putting up barriers, which had the unintended consequence of him not realizing his own romantic feelings towards her for a long time. The dude's not perceptive, and Uzaki didn't particularly make it easy for him to get the big picture.
  • What You Are in the Dark: She tends to behave more tenderly towards Sakurai whenever she finds herself in a situation where he is in a vulnerable position when they're alone (asleep, sick, etc.) because he's not guarding against her like every other time.
  • Women Are Wiser: As the active party in their relationship once they begin dating, Uzaki has come to understand and accept that Sakurai is a romance newbie Manchild.
  • Women Prefer Strong Men: More than once, Uzaki has caught herself admiring how physically fit Sakurai is.

Supporting characters

    Ami Asai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ami_uzakichan4.jpg

Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu (Japanese), Jad Saxton (English), Alexia Lamar (Latin American Spanish)

Sakurai's upperclassman at the university, and his workmate at the café.

  • A-Cup Angst: Played with. Realistically speaking, Ami is very well-stacked. But while hanging out at the beach in episode 6, she is visibly horrified (and potentially envious) of Uzaki's huge rack.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In Chapter 70, there's a panel where she says, "And that's why people is thinking this manga will end soon". Her dad replies that there's still a fair bit to go.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Often, she gets so caught up in her fantasies that she forgets about her surroundings. One time, after seeing Sakurai playing at the futsal club, she starts drooling over it to the point she fails to notice the fence in front of her and crashes into it.
  • Fetish: She has had one for muscles ever since Sakurai started working at the cafe.
  • Foil: To Sakaki, in terms of their Shipper on Deck approach to Uzaki and Sakurai. Ami is on the conservative, non-intervention route.
  • Has a Type: When asked about what kind of men she likes, she shamelessly admits that she loves them with six-packs.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • In episode 6, she is visibly horrified (and potentially envious) of Uzaki's huge rack; never mind the fact that she herself is (realistically speaking) stacked as well.
    • Despite trying to force Sakurai and Uzaki into fetishistic cosplay outfits to be their new uniforms at work - and later Uzaki's mother - she turns out to be a Reluctant Fanservice Girl herself as she is greatly embarrassed when her enraged father forces her to wear the Playboy Bunny outfit while serving customers that she had tried to get Uzaki to wear as punishment.
  • Insane Troll Logic: When Sakaki argues that it's going to take Sakurai and Uzaki a thousand years to get together at the rate they're going, Ami's response is that she'll simply live a thousand years to see it happen.
  • Lust Object: Ami loves admiring Sakurai's physique. Sakaki once tried to push Uzaki to be forward about how she is sure Sakurai likes her (while she was content to just be smug about and nothing more while he wasn't trying anything) by making her worry that other women might try to swoop in, with Ami's lust for him as an example.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: When she shamelessly tries to get Uzaki and her mother into sexy outfits and essentially turn their café into a strip club, her dad catches her and forces her to serve the customers in a bunny girl outfit for the rest of the day as punishment.
  • Shipper on Deck: While at first, it seems she'll be The Rival to Uzaki due to her attraction to Sakurai's physique, after seeing them interact together she clearly supports them being together. Ironically, if she was, Uzaki wouldn't be dancing around her feelings as much, something Akihiko lampshades that Ami should have done.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Sakaki, as comrades in getting Uzaki and Sakurai together.
  • Women Prefer Strong Men: Ami is noted for being a muscle fetishist and finds Sakurai very attractive because of his muscular physique.

    Akihiko Asai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akihiko_uzaki_8.jpg

Voiced by: Yosuke Akimoto (Japanese), Kent Williams (English), Mauricio Vásquez (Latin American Spanish)

Ami's dad and the owner of the café where Sakurai works.

  • Benevolent Boss: Akihiko may have totally hired Uzaki for the inevitable entertaining interactions and drama she'd have with Sakurai, but as Sakurai said on his first appearance in the manga he is pleasant and easygoing. He rarely throws his authority around, only ever doing so to reprimand his daughter for being extreme in her shipping designs, to help smooth out a conflict between Sakurai and Uzaki (which is a logical thing for a boss to do to keep his employees working together), or finally trying to put Sakurai and Uzaki alone together but in a more hands-off way than other characters.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Along with his daughter in Chapter 70, he says that the manga still has a fair bit to go.
  • It Amused Me: He hires Uzaki because he enjoys watching her often hilarious interactions with Sakurai.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: In Chapter 18, Akihiko tells Sakurai that one of the reasons he hired Uzaki was because he hasn't appeared much recently and wanted to have some more fun with them. In the anime, he gets a different scene where he addresses the audience on how they ended up at the beach.
  • Shipper on Deck: Akihiko is one for using his authority over them to get them together, but at the same time leaving them to spend time together alone.

    Itsuhito Sakaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/itsuhitosakaki.jpg

Voiced by: Tomoya Takagi (Japanese), Nazeeh Tarsha (English), Samuel Lazcano (Latin American Spanish)

Sakurai's friend at the college he attends. Coming from an affluent family, he is good at sports and popular among girls at the college.

  • Best Friend: Sakaki was this to Sakurai before Uzaki started college, alongside being his Only Friend at the time.
  • The Casanova: Played with. This is what Sakurai thinks Sakaki is, this being the main reason he didn't want him and Uzaki to meet. Even though he does get around, it's revealed that Sakaki would never consider hitting on a girl Sakurai likes.
  • Chick Magnet: He's very popular with women at college.
  • Hidden Depths: Sakaki cares about Sakurai more than he gives him credit for, to the point that he becomes Uzaki's friend just to chitchat about Sakurai. He also refrains from hitting on Uzaki out of respect for his friend.
  • Foil: To Ami in his Shipper on Deck approach. He is proactive and pro-intervention.
  • Only Friend: Seems to be this to Sakurai at first.
  • Romantic Wingman: The most active in this role, always trying to set up situations to bring Sakurai and Uzaki together.
  • Shipper on Deck: Says a lot that, despite being The Casanova, he doesn't hit on Uzaki because he knows she and Sakurai are attracted to each other and wants to help them get together.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Ami, as shippers for Uzaki and Sakurai.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: He arranges for him and his friends to take a hike in the woods banking on Uzaki getting scared and wanting Sakurai's protection. However, it is Sakurai who gets scared instead.

Friends / Family / Recurring Characters

    Tsuki Uzaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uzakimom1.jpg

Voiced by: Saori Hayami (Japanese), Terri Doty (English), Liliana Barba (Latin American Spanish)

Hana's mother. She considers Sakurai's look to be scary from the day she met him, and due to a misunderstanding, she thinks that Sakurai has taken an interest in her.

  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Tsuki misinterpreting and fantasizing about Sakurai being a ravenous man who wanted to have her and Hana at the same time in a mother-daughter combo comes off as odd later in the series following the introduction of the rest of the Uzaki family; by then it is shown Tsuki isn't often alone at home, the early scenes just happened to be in a time where it looked that way, and Tsuki does have a very healthy relationship with her husband Fujio even after many years of marriage, to the point their active sexual life can embarrass their son Kiri. By this point, the plausible explanation for such misunderstandings is that she got the idea from watching soap operas featuring young men pursuing older married women.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Tsuki about Sakurai. She constantly overhears conversations he and Hana have about the family cats as him desiring to fondle her. At first, she believes from these conversations that he's a cougar chaser interested purely in her. After that's cleared up by Ami and her dad, another overheard conversation has her think that he and Hana are in an open sexual relationship. After realizing that isn't the case, she's more-or-less on the same page as everyone else but remains convinced that Sakurai wants both her and Hana.
  • Eyes Always Shut: So far, the times she's opened her eyes can be counted on one hand.
  • Happily Married: From what we see, she loves her husband dearly. In Chapter 51.5, their flirting is enough to silence all three of their kids for an entire morning and gives them both a lovey-dovey sparkling aura.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Her husband is of average height but has a muscular build and she's so short he towers over her easily.
  • Likes Older Women: Played for Laughs and subverted. Tsuki gets the impression that Sakurai is into older women and has a crush on her. She gets even more nervous when she learns that Sakurai is very popular among moms that visit the café he works. Though she's quickly assured by Ami and her father that he doesn't have a thing for older women, fate conspires for her to continue hearing him say words that sound like he's gunning to feel her up.
  • Motherly Side Plait: She wears a short ponytail over her right shoulder.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: Her appearance is basically Hana with longer hair and her eyes always closed. This is despite being 43, more than twice her daughter's age. Ami is a bit taken aback by how young she looks.
  • Nice Girl: She's a complete sweetheart. Not even a hint of a mean bone in her, but she's just a little prone to arriving at the wrong conclusions.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: When her husband is going through a funk over his daughter dating Sakurai in Chapter 79, she decides to dress up as a Meido to cheer him up. He then asks her to dress up in a School Sport Uniform, which she reluctantly complies with, but ultimately it does work to snap him out of his depression.
  • Skewed Priorities: When they all get piss drunk during Sakurai's first visit to the Uzaki home to meet Hana's father, Hana is stripping a conked-out Sakurai while Tsuki is neatly folding his clothes, worried that they would get wrinkled otherwise.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Tsuki's genes are strong, as her children Hana, Kiri, and Yanagi closely resemble her. Hana and Yanagi also inherited her ample... tracts of land. Curiously, none of the kids resemble their dad in the slightest, only inheriting his dark hair that partially shows up on their napes.
  • Supreme Chef: She's the reason why Hana is such a good cook herself, which eventually leads to her giving cooking lessons to Sakurai as well.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: She watches a lot of soap operas where middle-aged housewives have affairs with younger men; she tends to see herself as a lead (along with Sakurai) of such a story, rather than a side character in a Slice of Life comedy.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: For the most part, she's very sweet and gentle, but can put her foot down when her husband goes overboard with his antics.

    Fujio Uzaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uzakidad.jpg

Voiced by: Hideo Ishikawa (Japanese), Matthew David Rudd (English), Bernardo Rodríguez (Latin American Spanish)

Hana's father, also known as "Fuji". He's a personal trainer at a gym Sakurai decides to attend for exercise.

  • Art Shift: He shifts into a more hardline battle manga style when he becomes overprotective. This is best seen in Chapter 64 when he meets Sakurai in the Uzaki residence, then realizes that the guy Hana was fussing about was the same guy he's been praising in his gym.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: His children are more often than not telling him to knock it off when he gets too enthusiastic.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: The guy gets very enthusiastic about exercising, and gets impressed with Sakurai doing a 100 kg bench press.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Fujio is one to Hana:
    • He doesn't take well learning that her senpai, Sakurai, is a man. Even after Hana admits they're not dating, Fujio flip-flops between being happy about his daughter's chastity being intact, and angry that the alleged guy (Sakurai) doesn’t want to date his obviously cute daughter.
    • This is subverted in Chapter 71. When Sakurai is asking him permission to date his daughter, not only he's approving, he even tries to encourage Sakurai to confess to her. Double subverted as he was trying to dissuade him.
    • He gets to display in full in during the 9th episode of Season 2, scaring away some guys who try to hit on his daughters at the hot springs resort.
  • Color Failure: He suffers from this not long after Hana gets hooked up with Shinichi for real. He manages to "bounce back" after a sexy cosplay session with his wife.
  • Commonality Connection: Even after Fujio accepts Shinichi is an honest man who will treat Hana right, he still has a tiny tingle of anger over his daughter "being taken away" from him, but by then Fujio keeps mostly to himself in his mind. However, later when Fujio actually stops to think a little, reminding himself of how much Sakurai has been a regular at the gym, and honestly seem to like working out, Fujio has an epiphany where he starts seeing Sakurai as potentially another son who actually enjoys going to the gym, as only his boy Kiri seem to share that mindset, while his wife Tsuki, and daughters Hana and Yanagi, don't seem to care about working out all that much; with that Fujio drops the last remainder of his worries about Sakurai and Hana being an item, pulling a complete turn where he now wishes Sakurai and Hana get married as soon as possible for Sakurai to officially become his "fourth child", AKA son-in-law.
  • Fan Disservice: Volume 7's extra has him in a cow-themed bikini outfit. The lion's face on the opposite page says it all.
  • First-Name Basis: Played for Laughs. Unbeknownst to Sakurai, Fujio almost exclusively used his nickname "Fuji" while at the gym, so Sakurai thought that was his last name. Adding insult to injury, Fujio's name tag reads "Fuji" because he wanted to look friendly to his customers. It's not until much later that Sakurai realizes that this is the case.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: He laments the fact that two of his kids have dropped Kansai dialect as they grew up.
  • Happily Married: He and his wife are very much this, despite his wacky antics. In Chapter 51.5, their flirting gets so out of hand that it silences all three of their kids for an entire morning and gives them both a lovey-dovey sparkling aura.
  • Height Angst: While he's more or less of average height, he wishes he was a bit taller like Sakurai (who has 10 cm over him).
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: He only stands 1.70 m, but with his wife being so short, plus his muscular build, he easily towers over her.
  • Lazy Artist: The anime keeps the exact same current Fujio appearance, his 46-year-old self, during a flashback where Hana was just a little girl; the manga showed younger Fujio was a little different back then, he had no beard stubble and his hair wasn’t brushed back, in fact, Fujio looked quite similar to Shinichi, just more muscular.
  • Lovable Jock: He's an enthusiastic instructor at his gym, convincing Sakurai to become a regular.
  • A Man Is Always Eager: Fujio is easygoing, amicable, and quite well-adjusted at first glance, but he tends to get eccentric pretty fast whenever he is worried about something. When his eccentricities lead him to get comically sad, Fujio immediately looks for Tsuki to have sex, and when it is Tsuki who first tries to cheer him up, she already knows Fujio wants to be seduced, implying this is a common solution to Fujio’s blues.
  • Psychological Projection: Fujio being so overprotective of Hana at first has likely to do with making sure the man who has set his eyes on his daughter actually likes her beyond just a pretty face and attractive body, as Hana looks identical to her mother and Fujio just can’t keep his hands off Tsuki, he has to make sure Hana’s potential boyfriend isn’t just a sex pest, but a loving man like him as well. Once Fujio gets to know Shinichi’s sincere thoughts about Hana he calms down and starts supporting their relationship.

    Kiri Uzaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiriuzakianime.png

Voiced by: Yuko Sanpei (Japanese), Hayden Daviau (English), Eduardo Aranda (Latin American Spanish)

Hana's younger brother who's in high school and the middle child of the family.

  • Big Eater: As a growing teen, half of his thoughts lie with food. Boy's eager to inhale whatever his mother and/or sister throw his way.
  • Big Little Brother: Even though he's not that tall, he's already outgrown Hana by 12 cm.
  • Blessed with Suck: He leans on his mother's side when it comes to physiology (just like his sisters), so Kiri's dad speculates that he may not be a bodybuilding type.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Chapters 56 and 57 are about him going to his dad's gym.
    • He gets another in Chapter 82, where we learn a bit of his middle school days and how he developed a liking for older women.
  • Has a Type: He tells Hana that he's partial towards bookish girls that are older than him, kind, open-minded, spoiling, and that should exude an air of adulthood. Cue Ami.
  • Height Angst: He stands at 1.62 m and is not happy about it. Doesn't help that his father likes to rub his lack of height in his face.
  • Idiot Hair: He gets teased for it in an omake.
  • Last Episode, New Character: He gets an early appearance in the last episode of Season 1.
  • Love at First Sight: Immediately falls for Ami the moment he sees her.
  • Muscle Angst: He developed this after hearing that Ami likes men with six-packs.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: He caught the sight of Fujio and Tsuki about to get it on. It traumatizes him to the point that he's afraid to go home.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: In middle school, blurting this out in front of a girl he liked cost him a chance for a relationship with her.
  • Teeny Weenie: Downplayed. While it isn't actually seen, the sight of Sakurai's in the shower makes him despondent and leads him to ask his father if his gym offers "dick training", who of course tells him that does not exist.

    Yanagi Uzaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yanagiuzakianime.png

Voiced by: Seina Katou (Japanese), Brittany Lauda (English), Denisse Leguizamo (Latin American Spanish)

Hana's younger sister who's in junior high school and the youngest child of the family.

  • Cute Little Fangs: She has prominent fangs just like her sister's, complementing her playful image.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapters 54 and 55 are about her visiting her sister at work to meet her senpai.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Her eyes have yet to be seen.
  • The Gadfly: Yanagi is a subscriber of stirring the pot for her own amusement, even at the expense of her own family. When they get piss drunk with Sakurai, Yanagi seizes the opportunity to steer Hana into messing with him, and somehow even her mom gets involved too. It's not until her dad comes in and stops them that nothing major happens. She's so eager to keep messing with them that her mom, a little sobered up now, stops her when she wants to go to Sakurai's apartment with Hana and their dad to keep having fun.
  • Gamer Chick: She seems to be an even better one than Hana. Dialogue from Kiri implies neither of them can ever win against her.
  • The Idiot from Osaka: She's the only Uzaki sibling to speak with a Kansai dialect, which complements her mischievous and fun-loving personality.
  • Playful Cat Smile: Whenever she finds something worth teasing.
  • Shipper on Deck: When she finds out about her sister's senpai, she asks her mother if she can skip school to meet him.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Like her mom and sister, she's pretty stacked for her age. Because of this, she and Hana look closer in age than they actually are.
  • Young Entrepreneur: In manga Vol. 7's Special Chapter 69.5, Yanagi is shown making a video stream giving advice on winning gaming strategies, with her voice disguised and using what is apparently a CGI avatar of a middle-aged man in a Crocodile Dundee-style outfit as a narrator to hide her true identity. After her video is finished, she prints out her pay statement (apparently from the company sponsoring her to make the videos) and hands it to her mother to deposit the funds, who in turn remarks that it's a considerable amount of money—more than she made with her last video. Her parents are completely fine with what she is doing, as long as her grades don't slip and her identity as a middle school girl is hidden from the public. In fact, the only worry her father has is what he's going to do when Yanagi starts making more money than him!
  • Younger Than They Look: One could be forgiven for thinking she and her sister are closer in age than they actually are. In the 9th episode of Season 2, a couple of older guys start hitting on them while at the hot springs resort, and Yanagi drives them away saying she's still a middle schooler while pretending that Hana is one too, much to her annoyance.

    Haruko Sakurai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakurasmom_0.jpg
Haruko, holding Nodoka

Voiced by: Miki Itō (Japanese), Morgan Garrett (English)

Shinichi's mother. A housewife and former judoka from a line of fighters, Haruko is a kind and no-nonsense woman who takes no sass from either her husband or son.

  • Almighty Mom: Despite her apparent sweet and quiet nature, she turns out to be this. When her son and husband are late for dinner due to their sparring with each other, she angrily throws them both to the ground. She's later seen ordering Shinichi to eat, and in Chapter 76, she gives him a karate chop on the head when she thinks he's planning on doing perverted stuff with his girlfriend.
  • Heir Club for Men: Invoked. Her husband inherited her family's dojo when they married, even though she's a considerably better fighter than him.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: Despite being 49, she doesn't look that much older than her son.
  • Shipper on Deck: When she meets Uzaki for the first time and finds out she's her son's girlfriend, she's quite approving of her.
  • Supreme Chef: She's a great cook.
  • Women Are Wiser: She is by far the most mature family member between her husband and son.

    Shirou Sakurai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shirousakurai.jpg

Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese), Cris George (English), Rodo Balderas (Latin American Spanish)

Shinichi's father. He is the head of his wife's family dojo, mainly coaching children.

  • Always Someone Better: He's a competent fighter, enough to head his wife's family dojo, and he can hand Shinichi his ass on a plate. However, his wife is stronger than him by a nautical mile.
  • Amazon Chaser: According to him, his wife is the stronger of the two, and he's a skilled martial artist who can put his son (who's quite athletic) down easily and that's after she angrily throws both to the ground with ease.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: The reason why Shinichi doesn't like to visit them is that he can't stand his father's childish antics.
  • Bumbling Dad: For Shinichi, as he's a pretty wacky dude.
  • Combat Pragmatist: When Shinichi tells him that he doesn't want to inherit the family dojo, Shirou retorts that one of the perks of it is being called "Sensei"... as long as his pupils are children (as they happen to be).
  • Heir Club for Men: As mentioned in his wife's entry, he's now the head of his wife's family dojo.
  • Heir to the Dojo: Via marriage with his wife.
  • Jerkass: He marginalized Shinichi for months in order to have complete freedom to romance his wife, which doesn't sound as bad until it's revealed that he lied to her too to keep her far from Shinichi. This is, regardless of the fact that Shinichi's college is not particularly far from home, but Shirou kept him away and convinced his wife that their son was okay alone at college. On top of that, he completely neglected to inform Shinichi that he has a baby sister born as a result of this and told his wife that Shinichi knew.
  • Likes Older Women: Most likely if he chose to marry a woman three years older than him.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Shinichi dislikes him, hence one of the reasons why he doesn't like to visit home. Shinichi is very open about this dislike, much to his mom's chagrin. This also happens to be why Shinichi doesn't want to follow in his footsteps in judo.
  • Manchild: He tells Shinichi that he absolutely enjoys the fact that his child students call him "Sensei" despite the fact that his wife is a considerably more competent fighter than him and that the dojo is her family's.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: A male variant. You'd think he's Shinichi's big brother, despite being 46.
  • Troll: He likes to mess with Shinichi, and he particularly loves beating his ass in judo.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Unlike his son, who is serious and responsible, Shirou is anything but. After all, what kind of father sends his son away to college so he can have his wife all for himself, and forgets to tell him he's now got a baby sister?

    Nodoka Sakurai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nodokasakurai.jpg

Voiced by: Reina Nagao (Japanese)

Shinichi's baby sister, who's been recently born without his knowledge.

  • Babies Make Everything Better: Or funnier, in this case. Shinichi had no clue about her since his father forgot to tell him he even has a younger sibling.
  • Practically Different Generations: There's a twenty-year age gap between her and Shinichi.
  • The Stoic: For a baby, she’s very calm, always having the same bland expression regardless of her family’s antics. When she and Shinichi first met, he shouted in surprise at discovering he had a sister. Normally, a baby her age would Freak Out and cry, but she remained quiet and calm.

    Sasamoto

Voiced by: Junji Majima (Japanese), Emiliano Venosa (Latin American Spanish)

A friend of Sakurai and Sakaki, who is desperate to get himself a girlfriend.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Becomes one towards Ami after laying eyes on her.
  • Alone Among the Couples: While playing in the futsal club, he gets increasingly annoyed when he sees that all of his teammates have girlfriends (or something very close to that), while he doesn't.
  • Butt-Monkey: Misfortune seems to follow him everywhere.
  • Casanova Wannabe: No matter how hard he tries, he can't score with a girl.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He's jealous of Sakaki and Sakurai for being able to attract girls without effort (even more after the latter got himself a girlfriend).
  • Manchild: He throws a temper tantrum when the group date he planned didn't go his way.

    Kuso Cat
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kusocat.jpg

An odd gray cat with a perpetual look of astonishment on its face.
