     Leashed Pack/Bella's Pack/Wild Pack

Yap/Lucky

"They don't have to grow up that way. No dog is born vicious. Just like I wasn't born streetwise. The Fierce Dogs are taught to be aggressive... their lives make them what they are."

The main character of the original series. A male Sheltie/retriever with gold-and-white fur.

  • The Aloner: Lucky was originally proud to be on his own. This eventually changes as he grows to love being a part of the pack.
  • Abusive Parents: Lucky's previous alcoholic longpaw had been abusive towards him.
  • Alcoholic Dad: In his former family, the father was an alcoholic and an Abusive Dad.
  • Becoming the Mask: He's sent to spy and betray the Wild Pack by Bella, but he finds himself growing close to the pack. This ends up resolved when the two packs become one.
  • Cats Are Mean: He's a firm believer in this, so it surprises (and slightly amuses) him when a cat thanks him for rescuing it.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He had an abusive owner as a puppy.
  • Demoted to Extra: Lucky doesn't get as much screen-time in the second arc as he did in the original arc.
  • Dog Stereotype: He's a golden, floppy-eared Retriever mix, which gives him enough traits to fit the "heroic dog protagonist" archetype. He's also a streetwise mixed-breed.
  • The Exile: Lucky gets kicked out of the pack in "Darkness Falls", for supposedly bringing misfortune on the pack. Lucky eventually makes it back to the pack and works his hardest to be a pack dog.
  • First-Name Basis: Even when Sweet is his beta, she doesn't mind Lucky using her real name in private.
  • Friendless Background: Prior to meeting Sweet, Lucky has had few allies and even fewer friends.
  • I Work Alone: He resists early attempts to join a pack because he's been alone his entire life.
  • Meaningful Name: It's mentioned several times that he has a lot of luck. He ends up in trouble a lot, which leads Alpha to call his name a joke, but Lucky always ends up fine in the end.
  • Meaningful Rename: He was named "Yap" as a pup.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Because dogs are a very social species, Lucky is seen as weird for preferring to be alone. However, Lucky is lying to himself because he does secretly prefer being around others. He's afraid of trusting others and being relied on.
  • Naïve Newcomer: He becomes this in "A Hidden Enemy". Lucky has always been a Lone Dog and doesn't know about pack life. So, when he's forced to act as a spy for a rival pack, Lucky doesn't even know what a "beta" (second-in-command to the alpha) is.
  • Number Two: Becomes the beta to Sweet's alpha during "The Endless Lake".
  • Official Couple: With Sweet as of the second series.
  • Papa Wolf: He's the closest thing the Fierce Dog pups have to a sire-dog and he's very protective of them.
  • Parental Abandonment: Both his parents died prior to the series.
  • A Pet into the Wild: He had an abusive owner as a puppy. When the door was left ajar, he escaped and never came back.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He tries to ease the tensions between the Wild Pack and Arrow, and he agrees with Bella that Arrow isn't a bad dog.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives one to Alpha in "The Endless Lake" for betraying the Wild Pack.
  • Repressed Memories: Maybe he was too young, maybe he repressed the memories, but Lucky has forgotten most of his time as "Yap" and his time as a Leashed Dog. Meeting Bella again helps jog his memory.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He's much more laidback and gentle than his highstrung and assertive sister Bella.
  • Street Smart: He's lived in the city since puphood and is a very street-savvy.

Sweet

"I'll be okay. I won't fight- with the Wind-Dogs at my back, I can outrun any dog!"

A small swift-dog (Greyhound) female with gray fur.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Has a novella called "Sweet's Journey" which tells us how she became beta of her pack.
  • Dog Stereotype: Subverted. Despite being a former racing Greyhound, she doesn't display any common stereotypes attributed to the breed.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: In the first book, Sweet is a gentle dog but this changes come the sequel. Lucky sees a different side of Sweet when she's beta under Alpha. Sweet can be as sweet as her name implies but she can be very harsh and ruthless when need be, to the point where her name becomes an Ironic Name.
  • Claustrophobia: Sweet wasn't raised as a pet so she's not used to buildings. Being a swift-dog also means she can't run around corners well. This leaves Sweet uncomfortable with longpaw settlements.
  • Ironic Name: Sweet is not a gentle dog. She's not cruel, but she's stern and serious.
  • The Leader: She becomes the new leader of the pack after Alpha 'dies'.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Lucky grows jealous of her bond with Alpha in the second book, but their relationship is strictly professional. Sweet does admit she could become Alpha's mate but that never occurs.
  • Number Two: To Alpha. She becomes the alpha dog after he joins the Fierce Dogs.
  • Official Couple: With Lucky as of the second series.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Sweet becomes this after the former alpha "dies". Lucky is relieved that she's a much better leader than the former alpha.
  • Screaming Birth: She yowls a lot while giving birth to her pups in "Dead of Night".
  • Sole Survivor: Her original pack was a group of Greyhounds released into the wild after becoming unsuitable for racing. She was the only one who survived the Big Growl thanks to being put in the Trap House.
  • Super-Speed: Being a Greyhound, Sweet is very speedy. Unfortunately, she can only run in short bursts and only in a straight line. She also has mediocre endurance.

Daisy

An energetic female Westie/Jack Russell Terrier mix.
  • Dog Stereotype: She's as energetic and jumpy as expected from a terrier.
  • Mister Muffykins: She's small, energetic, and very yappy. It comes with being a terrier.
  • Tragic Keepsake: She keeps a leather purse that belonged to her owners until late in the first book,

Mickey

"If a Leashed Dog like me can adapt, then pups certainly can. Dogs aren't born bad."

A black-and-white male "Farm-Work Dog" (Border Collie).

  • Dog Stereotype: He's a loyal Border Collie.
  • Iconic Item: He has his owner's baseball glove for the first half of the first arc. During "Darkness Falls", he finally leaves it behind.
  • Official Couple: With Snap as of "Storm of Dogs".
  • A Pet into the Wild: His owners exacuated because of the earthquake.
  • The Smart Guy
  • Tragic Keepsake: "His boy's" baseball glove. When the others bury their keepsakes, Mickey keeps his in hope that he'll be reunited with his longpaws soon.

Bruno

"The truth is that my fears got the better of me. I never used to be scared of anything. I was the toughest dog on the street! Now I can't sleep at night for fear that a fight will break out in the Pack. Even the light of the Sun-Dog doesn't make me feel safe. You never know what's out there, what's watching from behind the branches. Now I'm scared of everything."

A large male "Fight Dog" (German Shepherd/Chow Chow) with brown fur.

Sunshine

"Don't look at me like that, Lucky! I don't need your pity. I actually liked being Omega. Bella, Martha, and Daisy were still nice to me, and so was Snap. Anyway, I'm good at all those jobs—you know, the ones most dogs feel they're too noble for."

A Maltese female.

  • Butt-Monkey: Being one of the smallest dogs, she is stuck as Omega for much of the series. This involved her being treated like dirt by much of the pack and having to eat last, which also caused her to become skinny.
  • Dog Stereotype: She fits the "jumpy small dog" stereotype. She's also a bit of a spoiled lap-dog who was greatly attached to her longpaws. It's mentioned that Sunshine will likely never completely get over them.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: She gets mad at Lucky for pitying her as the Omega. Sunshine likes being Omega. She doesn't mind doing "dirty" jobs like changing bedding and the other dogs don't treat her that bad. As a Leashed Dog, Sunshine used to do things for her longpaws all the time. She likes taking care of others and sees being an Omega as her contribution to the pack.
  • Formerly Fat: Most of the Leashed Dogs were well-fed but Sunshine has the most striking change. She starts out as a plump pet but being forced to eat little more than scraps leads her to become thin in no time.
  • Meaningful Name: She's very chipper and takes things in stride despite losing her longpaws and being an Omega.
  • Messy Hair: Being a long-furred breed without humans to maintain her fur is unfortunate. Her fur often ends up knotted and messy as a result, especially due to her Omega status.
  • Mister Muffykins: A benevolent example. As Maltese are prone to be, she yaps a lot. She's also prone to complaining and she scares easily.
  • The Pollyanna: Not much gets Sunshine down.
  • A Pet into the Wild: Her owners evacuated during the earthquake. Sunshine is one of the most unfortunate examples because she's not fit for life in the wild.
  • Tragic Keepsake: She keeps hold of her yellow studded leash until the end of the first book.

Martha

"I won't allow it! I'll leave with them. You won't have to worry about the pups after that! But if you try to hurt them you will have to go through me!"

A black female Newfoundland with large webbed paws.

  • Almost Dead Guy: She talks to Storm a little bit before she dies.
  • The Big Guy
  • Gentle Giant: She's the largest of the Leashed Dogs and the friendliest.
  • Making a Splash: She has a strong connection with the River Dog.
  • Mama Bear: Sweet Gentle Giant Martha acts aggressive towards Alpha for acting hostile towards the Fierce Dog pups.
  • A Pet into the Wild: She was left alone after her owners left because of the earthquake.
  • So Proud of You: Tells Storm that she, and everyone else, are proud of her during the battle in "Storm of Dogs".
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her owner's red scarf. Martha's the first to agree on burying their keepsakes.

Squeak/Bella

"I'm not making excuses! I made a perfectly sensible decision, and you went against it. If you had been killed inside that longpaw house, it would have been your own fault."

A gold-and-white furred female Sheltie/retriever mix. She's Lucky's sister.

  • Disney Villain Death: Inverted in "The Final Battle", courtesy of Breeze shoving her off a building.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Lucky had been betrayed by Bella, who's his sister, because she used to spy on Alpha's pack, without telling him exactly what she was planning, and did not speak up for him when he was banished from the pack. When he comes back, he ignores her trying to talk to him before finally forgiving her... but he never forgets what she did.
  • Leader Wannabe: Bella tries to assert herself as the alpha dog throughout the first book of the first series. In the fifth book, she challenges Sweet for position to be the alpha dog of the pack. After leaving the Pack with her mate Arrow in "The Gathering Darkness" arc, she decides to start her own pack, beginning with herself, her mate, their remaining pups, and Storm, but after her death the others return to the Wild Pack.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Lucky hadn't seen his litter-sister Bella since they were known as "Yap" and "Squeak". Their other three siblings' (Snip, Yip and Yowl) whereabouts are unknown.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • She's referred to as a beautiful-looking dog.
    • When she was younger, she was a whiny, bossy pup fitting of the name "Squeak".
  • Meaningful Rename: She was named "Squeak" as a pup.
  • Mood-Swinger: She has mood swings from time to time and is very temperamental.
  • Official Couple: She's mates with Arrow, one of the Fierce Dogs which is something of a controversy to her pack due to their past with Fierce Dogs.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Her and Arrow's only daughter, Tufty, is stillborn.
  • A Pet into the Wild: Her owners evacuated for the earthquake, leaving their dog on her own.
  • Parental Abandonment:
    • Both her parents died prior to the series.
    • She saw her longpaws evacuate before the earthquake and thinks they abandoned her. She's mostly come to terms with the abandonment by the time she meets Lucky, but she still has difficulty giving up on her previous family.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Lucky is laidback and prefers being on his own while Bella has always been high-strung and bossy.
  • Screaming Birth: Delivers her pups during one, though one doesn't survive.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: She decides to leave the wild pack to be with Arrow after everyone treats him horribly.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Even before he recognizes Bella, Lucky feels that looking at her is like looking in a mirror.
  • Tragic Keepsake: A teddy bear. She gives it up late into the first book.

Alfie

"I walked a long way. All on my own. I like to be alone sometimes. I investigated this little valley, there—and those hills. I even went beyond them!"

A gray-and-white male Bulldog.

  • Bully Bulldog: Subverted. He's initially described as aloof but Alfie is a friendly and energetic dog.
  • Dog Stereotype: Zigzagged. He's nice like modern Bulldogs stereotypes, but he's far more energetic than most fictional Bulldogs.
  • Killed Off for Real: Alpha kills him in "A Hidden Enemy".
  • Kill the Cutie: The well-liked and fun Alfie is the first major character to die in the series, setting the tone for the rest of the book and showing how dangerous the wild really is.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: He's often rushing head-on into potentially dangerous situations. His impulsive nature gets him killed when he decides to snap at Alpha.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: He gets killed in the first few pages of the second book in order to emphasize what a threat Alpha is.
  • Spirit Advisor: He becomes this in "Storm Of Dogs", giving Lucky a prophecy that can change the pack's fate.
  • Tragic Keepsake: He keeps a ball until late into the first book.
  • Vague Age: He's barely older than a puppy. Whether he's the equivalent of a teenager or a young adult is difficult to tell.

Spring

"Growing up is so complicated for pups, even ones of the same litter. It's all about learning to cooperate like real Pack dogs."

A tan female "hunt dog" (spaniel/Beagle mix) with black patches. She's Twitch's sister.

  • Never Found the Body: She ends up drowning in "The Endless Lake", but her body's been swept away by the current, thus the dogs can't give her a burial.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks a lot like her litter-brother Twitch.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Spring agrees with Alpha on killing the Fierce Dog pups in fear that they'll come back for revenge.

Pup/Dog/Wolf/Alpha/Omega

"It's about survival. I will do whatever it takes to stay alive. If more dogs thought like me, we'd all be better off."

A large, gray-and-white furred male wolf-dog (half German Shepherd).

  • A Day in the Limelight: Stars in the novella "Alpha's Tale", which details his past.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": A variation. He's a wolf-dog. In his wolf pack, his name was "Dog". Among the pack of guard dogs he was briefly made to join, his name was "Wolf".
  • Agony of the Feet: He has a large scar on one paw from having it slashed in his youth.
  • All There in the Manual: His father is revealed to be a German Shepherd mix.
  • The Bully: He can be very cruel and dominant.
  • Cain and Abel: His half-siblings from Graceful's previous litter hated him and didn't forgive their mother for becoming mates with a dog.
  • Disney Death: He appears to drown in the sea at one point but ends up surviving. He later dies by breaking his neck during a fight with Lucky.
  • Dog Stereotype: He fits the negative stereotypes of both his German Shepherd and his wolf sides.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: In his wolf pack, fought his way to a position to lead his own hunting team. They deliberately ignore his orders, and when he calls them out for it, refuse to fight him for honor, claiming since he's not a wolf he's not allowed to challenge them, and force him to drag the prey back himself, much to his displeasure.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Alpha was born "Pup". His adult name, Dog, was given by his half-brother, Quick. He hated it due to disliking the dog part of his heritage.
  • Face–Heel Turn: He abandons the Wild Pack to join the Fierce Dogs because he deems them stronger than his old pack.
  • Fantastic Racism: He looks down upon Leashed Dogs and refuses to eat longpaw food due to deeming it unsuitable.
  • Freudian Excuse: Alpha's need to always be in control stems from growing up as a half-dog in a wolf pack, and vowing to never be a victim again. He also dislikes Fierce Dogs due to them having scarred him in his youth.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: In his wolf pack, he's looked down on for being half-dog. Aside from his mother, none of the pack like him, they just tolerate him because of his hunting skills, and eventually abandon him after he gets captured saving one of them from Fierce Dogs. Among the Fierce Dogs he joins, one likes him, while the others simply tolerate him because their longpaw master thinks he can be useful.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: He is a half-German Shepherd, half-wolf mix. As a result he has never quite fit in with either dogs or wolves.
  • Hypocrite: Alpha hates Fierce Dogs for what they did to him in his youth, yet he later betrays his own pack to be the Fierce Dogs' Omega.
  • It's All About Me: In the blurb for "The Endless Lake", Alpha declares that his own safety comes before the Pack.
  • Kick the Dog: Alpha declares that Storm's Naming Ceremony was false since it was done without his permission and tells the others to keep calling her Lick instead of Storm. Then he does a Naming Ceremony for real and calls her Savage.
  • Killed Off for Real: After his Disney Death in "The Endless Lake", he dies for real in "Storm of Dogs".
  • The Leader: Was the Alpha of the Wild Pack. Later he becomes the Fierce Dogs' Omega.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • He's the alpha dog of the Wild Pack.
    • Before he was known as Alpha he was called "Dog", given to him by his half-brother to mock his dog parentage. Later, after briefly being caught and made to join the Fierce Dogs that captured him, he won't tell them his name, so they call him "Wolf" to reflect his wolf parentage.
  • Meaningful Rename: "Pup" -> Dog -> Wolf -> Alpha -> Omega.
  • Motive Decay: He formed the Wild Pack so he would have friends and never be a victim again. By the time the series begins, he's let the power that comes with being the leader go to his head, making him the character we see.
  • Neck Snap: Lucky delivers one to him, killing off the former alpha.
  • Noble Wolf-dog/The Big Bad Wolf-dog: Alpha often zigzags between these two until landing in the latter in The Endless Lake.
  • No-Respect Guy: In his original wolf pack. And by most of the Fierce Dogs he's forced to join after being separated from his wolf pack.
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother was killed by Fierce Dogs and his father died sometime during his puphood.
  • Parting-Words Regret: In "Alpha's Tale", he gets into an argument with his mother for mating with a dog and insults her and his late father. That's the last thing he tells her before she's killed off, and he feels very ashamed for not making it up with her.
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: Is not a very good leader, spending his time in his den while the others do the work, which includes forcing Lucky or the Fierce Dog pups to do things as "tests of loyalty". He also often invokes Sure, Let's Go with That or Glad I Thought of It when Sweet or Fiery suggests a proper course of action.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives one to Lucky in "Darkness Falls" for agreeing to take in Fierce Dog pups and questions his loyalty... which becomes ironic and hypocritical when he joins the Fierce Dogs two books later.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He's serious and determined, while his half-brother Quick is lighthearted and doesn't take things too seriously. This causes him to see Quick as a Broken Pedestal after he gives him the name "Dog" and refuses to acknowledge or understand why it's a big deal.
  • Sole Survivor: Out of his litter.
  • Trauma Button: He has a scar on his paw from having it slashed by a Fierce Dog in his youth. When he sees adult Fierce Dogs for the first time since escaping those particular ones, he freezes.
  • Unfortunate Name: He thinks this about being named Dog, as it is a constant reminder of his heritage which he has worked hard to rise above.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: He gets his yellow eyes from his mother. It shows that he's part-wolf and also that he's not the most trustworthy dog.

Snail/Fiery

"I knew that for such a big dog, I was fast. I knew it from when I first learned to run I could run almost as fast as Lightning, or so I thought when I was young and arrogant. I watched Lightning in the sky, and thought about how he looked like a streak of flame—and I just knew. I knew instantly that Fiery was my true name."

A huge brown male mastiff.

  • The Big Guy: Being a mastiff, he is very large; the largest dog in Alpha's pack in fact. As a result, he's one of the most difficult dogs to fight.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was the only survivor of a sickness that wiped out his pack.
  • Happily Married: With Moon.
  • Killed Off for Real: He became poisoned by radiation at one point and it weakened him to the point that he could no longer fight effectively; thus, when he and his rescuers are intercepted by Terror's pack and a fight breaks out, Terror is able to kill Fiery quite easily.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • His mother named him "Snail" because he was obsessed with snails as a pup.
    • Fiery's name comes from his speed. He's unusually fleet-footed for his size and so he named himself after seeing a lightning bolt in the sky, which he thought resembled fire.
  • Meaningful Rename: As a pup he was named "Snail".
  • Official Couple: With Moon.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Outlives his son, Fuzz, who is killed by foxes in "A Hidden Enemy".
  • Papa Wolf: He's very protective of his pups.
  • Parental Abandonment: Both of his parents died from sickness when he was still a pup.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Although Fiery respects Alpha, he's a lot calmer and more friendly than he. When he challenges Alpha for the position of leadership, Lucky even lampshades how different the pack would be under Fiery's rule.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives one to Alpha while challenging him for leadership, calling him out on making bad decisions for the pack and treating the pets like crap while not recognizing their potential.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: When he was a pup he loved to eat snails, claiming them to be tasty. He's still fond of them.

Twitch

"They should have stayed at home doing tricks for their longpaws. You may be a City Dog, Lucky, but at least you know about true dog-life, life in the wild, living by your wits and surviving. Those dogs do not deserve to survive."

A tan male "hunt dog" (spaniel/Beagle mix) with black patches and a disabled foot. He is Spring's brother.

  • Agony of the Feet: Twitch was born with a lame left paw, which he complains about. "The Broken Path" reveals that he's chewed it off, helping him get around better even if he's three-legged now.
  • The Exile: Twitch gets kicked out of the wild pack in "Darkness Falls" for having an injured foot. He joins another pack ruled by a mad dog who believes in the Fear Dog named Terror. After Terror is killed, Twitch becomes the new leader of this pack.
  • Fantastic Racism: He has a pretty heavy anti-Leashed Dogs bias.
  • The Leader: Becomes the new alpha of Terror's pack after Terror is killed by Storm.
  • Number Three: He becomes something like this in "The Gathering Darkness" arc, where he's named a Third Dog, who is an alpha but acts more like a beta.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Lucky knew he was Spring's litter-sibling before it was mentioned. The only physical difference between the two is Spring's leg.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He starts out near the bottom of pack society because of his lame paw, but he's soon gotten rid of the lame leg and becomes the new alpha of his own pack.

Dart

"I can smell the stink of the city on you. What is it you hunt? Food wrappers?"

A brown-and-white female "chase-dog" (whippet mix).

  • Defector from Decadence: In "The Gathering Darkness" arc she leaves the Wild Pack with a few other dogs to form their own pack, wanting to be with someone she knows she can trust.

Mulch

"We have rules here. We're not greedy scavengers."

A male black spaniel mix.

  • Butt-Monkey: He's often talked down to or bitten by older dogs.
  • Ear Ache: He has long ears. When given a beatdown by Alpha and Sweet when Lucky and Whine frame him as a food stealer, his ears are the target of much biting.
  • Grudging "Thank You": Even after he had not been kind to Lucky, Mulch is surprised that Lucky saved some food for him. He's able to thank him, though a little moodily.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He dies trying to save Moon and Fiery's pups from foxes in "A Hidden Enemy".
  • Series Continuity Error: He, along with Moon, Snap and Whine, joins the Wild Pack after a disease destroys most of theirs and causes others to abandon them in "Moon's Choice". However, he is strangely absent in "Sweet's Journey".
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In "Moon's Choice", Mulch had been a competent dog and loyally sticks up for Moon. Come "A Hidden Enemy", and he's been reduced to sulking and taking it out on Lucky.

Snap

"I too value loyalty in a leader. And if my Alpha is true to me, I will give that loyalty back till the day I go to the Earth-Dog."

A small female Beagle/terrier mix with tan-and-white fur.

  • Ear Ache: Lucky wins a fight against her in "A Hidden Enemy" by biting her ear.
  • Official Couple: With Mickey as of "Storm of Dogs".
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Snap is half-Beagle and half-terrier. She's much smaller than Lucky yet gives him a run for his money due to her speed.

Moon

"Don't plan out your life too carefully, Storm. You never know what might come along to change your path."

A black-and-white female Border Collie.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Has a novella called "Moon's Choice".
  • Arranged Marriage: Her parents had chosen a dog named Hunter to be Moon's mate. But after Moon's pack caught a sickness that started killing them one by one Hunter decided to leave, only to come back after the sickness had gone. Needless to say, Moon chased Hunter away because he wasn't the kind of dog they needed and she chose Fiery to be her mate since he had helped save her and her remaining pack members.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Moon was once a part of a pack where her father was Alpha and her mother was Beta. But one day the pack caught a sickness that started killing them one by one. If it hadn't been for Fiery, every single member would have died.
  • Happily Married: Moon was very happy with Fiery and even stated that she would never get a new mate.
  • The Leader: Becomes this to her pack after most of them die of a sickness or leave. It doesn't take long for her to merge them with the nearby Wild Pack.
  • Mama Bear: Losing one of her pups to foxes in "A Hidden Enemy" makes her fight even harder.
  • Official Couple: With Fiery.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Outlives her son, Fuzz, who is killed by foxes in "A Hidden Enemy".
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Moon was always the more responsible one, while her sister Star always liked to play. Moon even stated that Star was happy to be a free spirit.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Hunter, her former pack member, after he returns to the pack after abandoning it when they needed him and attempts to claim leadership.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Moon fears and dislikes the Fierce Dog pups, but she'd rather abandon them on their own than outright kill them.
  • You Are in Command Now: Her father names her the leader of their pack while he's suffering from the sickness. After he dies, she becomes this officially.

Whine

"How could I trust Hunter? I couldn't trust you ever again. You'd abandon me in the flash of a rabbit tail. I'm staying with Moon."

A black male Pug.

  • Butt-Monkey: As Omega, Whine is often treated as if he isn't a dog and is just kept around to do things others won't. This works to his advantage as other dogs don't pay much attention to him, giving him the ability to sneak around without issue,
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing/Evil Genius: He may look meek and useless, but he arranges for an innocent yet whiny dog named Mulch to be framed for eating before the pack so that he could move up a rank.
  • Blackmail: He blackmails Lucky into moving him up a rank in exchange for not ratting him out. He still tells the pack anyway.
  • The Bus Came Back: After disappearing at the end of the original arc, he reappears in "The Exile's Journey" having become the pet of some longpaws living in a log cabin. He gives Storm a place to stay the night, then later helps her escape.
  • Dirty Coward: He's not the most courageous dog, which gets noted by others.
  • Dog Stereotype: Completely inverted. He's the opposite of the friendly, lovable image associated with Pugs.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: He has this reaction when Lucky tries to spare him extra meat during mealtime.
  • The Exile: He willingly leaves the Wild Pack for the Fierce Dogs, but after the final battle, even the remaining Fierce Dogs want nothing to do with him. Even the sweet and chipper Sunshine gets the honor of chasing Whine away from the Wild Pack forever.
  • From Stray to Pet: In "The Exile's Journey" he is revealed to be the pet of some longpaws living in a log cabin with two other dogs.
  • Gonk: Pugs look grotesque to dogs. He's routinely referred to as "ugly". Even the pack list calls him "oddly-shaped".
  • It's All About Me: Really has no loyalty to anyone but himself, and hates being the Omega. Finds out Lucky is a spy, but instead of turning him in, blackmails him to get a promotion, and then eats all the remaining food when his turn to eat comes. After the new Omega's death, he rats Lucky out in the hope Lucky will be made Omega so it won't be him. He also disagrees with Lucky being kicked out of the Pack, because Lucky is Omega at the time, with Lucky even noting he doesn't want to be relegated to his former role. Also abandons the Pack when they refuse to give up Storm to the Fierce Dogs. Overlaps with Anything but That! in regards to being the Omega.
  • Jerkass: He's generally unpleasant when you get to know him. Even after Sunshine becomes the Omega so it doesn't have to be him, he's still a jerk to Lucky and Lick/Storm. He also eats all the remaining food on his turn after his promotion, so the new Omega, Mulch, doesn't have anything to eat.
  • Kick the Dog: After Mulch is demoted to Omega and Whine doesn't have to be it anymore, Whine proceeds to eat all the remaining food when his turn to eat comes before the new Omega's, leaving Mulch to starve that night. Especially egregious given that Whine himself arranged for Mulch to be demoted.
  • Leader Wannabe: A variation. He's not trying to be the leader; he just doesn't want to be the Omega anymore.
  • The Load: He's not seen as particularly good at anything. He can't hunt, he's a useless fighter, he's bad at guarding the territory, and he's a terrible patroller. This is why he was stuck as an Omega for so long. In "The Exile's Journey", he's left alone in the cabin with Storm, because he's too slow to keep up with the other dogs when they are taken for their morning walk.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He tricks Lucky into helping him get out of the Omega position by blaming another dog named Mulch for a crime he didn't commit. Also manipulates a pair of longpaws and their dogs into taking him in and trusting him, and later the dogs into helping Storm escape so she won't screw things up for him.
  • Meaningful Name: When he properly introduces himself to Lucky, the first thing he does is complain about how he doesn't want to be the Omega and nothing he does is ever enough. He pressures Lucky to get someone else demoted as soon as possible, and afterward, sometimes complains about Storm. His name is Whine for a reason. In "The Exile's Journey", he has been named Buddy by his new owners, which given his personality, is an Ironic Name.
  • No Sympathy: For Mulch, despite him having blackmailed Lucky into making him the new Omega, he proceeds to Kick the Dog, by eating all the remaining food after Mulch's demotion so Mulch has nothing. Lucky is disgusted by this, believing if anyone should have sympathy for the new Omega, it would be the old one.
  • The Oathbreaker: He promises not to rat out Lucky as a spy for the Leashed Dogs if he helps him get out of being Omega. But once he does, he ends up telling Alpha that Lucky is a spy.
  • Pet the Dog: Subverted. He defends Lucky when Alpha wants to kick him out for having been a spy, but Lucky realizes this is only because he doesn't want the Omega to leave, as he thinks it'll be him again if that happens. He also helps Storm escape his longpaws immediately in "The Exile's Journey", but only because he doesn't want her to screw up the good life he has managed to get for himself.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Tells Lucky, when blackmailing him, that he's not asking him to do something that would make himself Omega, as in his opinion, that's worse than whatever Alpha would do to him for spying. Also helps Storm escape instead of turning the other dogs against her, as that is the easiest way to get rid of her quickly.
  • Series Continuity Error: He, along with Moon, Snap and Mulch, joins the Wild Pack after a disease destroys most of theirs and causes others to abandon them in "Moon's Choice". However, he is strangely absent in "Sweet's Journey".
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After his failed proposition to give up Storm to the Fierce Dogs, he leaves, sneering that he's been the only smart dog to leave.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Whine doesn't have an issue with killing the Fierce Dog pups.

Squirm/Beetle

"I will be Beetle. Fast, and hard to see! But my hide is tough and strong!"

A black-and-white male Border Collie/mastiff mix. The son of Fiery and Moon, litter-brother to Thorn and Fuzz.

Nose/Thorn

"I've thought about this for a long time. I will be Thorn. Sharp and deadly."

A black female Border Collie/mastiff mix. Daughter of Fiery and Moon, litter-sister to Beetle and Fuzz.

Fuzz

A black-and-white male Border Collie/mastiff mix. Son of Fiery and Moon, litter-brother to Beetle and Thorn.

Lick/Storm

"You're my Pack. You've always been my Pack. I am not one of them. I am no Fierce Dog. This is the only place for me, and I'll do whatever it takes to fit in."

A black-and-tan female "Fierce Dog" (Doberman Pinscher) originally with the Fierce Dogs. She's the main character of the second series.

  • Action Girl: She's a really strong fighter.
  • All There in the Manual: She was rescued by Lucky and Mickey at 8-10 weeks old.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Whisper is grateful to Storm for saving him and his pack from Terror, but he ends up being too attached to her. Irritated, she snaps at him to go away and leave her alone. When Whisper ends up killed near the end of "A Pack Divided", she tells herself regretfully that she got her wish, all right.
  • Creepy Child: Even as a puppy she had an abnormal interest in fighting. Still, she's the Token Heroic Orc out of the Dobermans.
  • Ear Ache: She gets one of her ears torn by another Fierce Dog.
  • The Exile: She leaves the Wild Pack at the end of "Red Moon Rising", fearing that she had gotten one of Lucky and Sweet's pups hurt.
  • Happily Adopted: She was quite happy with Martha and always saw her as a kind of mother figure.
  • Hot-Blooded: Even if she's the aversion of the Doberman stereotype (being a good dog), she's still hotheaded at times, especially around Alpha.
  • Meaningful Name: Her pup name, Lick, was given to her because she constantly licked Lucky, Mickey, and her brothers. Her adult name, Storm, reminds Lucky of the Storm of Dogs, which he has been having dreams about. Subverted when Alpha attempts to rename her Savage, which is only for his own bigotry, and not her nature.
  • Meaningful Rename: She was originally known as "Lick" before receiving her adult name. Alpha also attempts to rename her "Savage" on a technicality to show what he believes is her true nature, but none of the other dogs go along with it.
  • Nature vs. Nurture: She was born a Fierce Dog, and clearly still has their instincts, evidenced by her ripping off Terror's jaw and later killing him, but is fighting to become a Wild Dog.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother was killed by injuries inflicted by Blade.
  • Thicker Than Water: She refuses to kill her brother Fang, even in the middle of a Rage Breaking Point test.
  • Was Too Hard on Him: She gets tired of Whisper hero-worshipping her and bluntly (though understandably) tells him to leave her alone. But when he gets killed in "A Pack Divided", she berates herself for what she told him.

Wiggle

"I thought you liked us. I thought you were our friend."

A black-and-tan male "Fierce Dog" (Doberman Pinscher) who is Storm's and Fang's litter-brother.

Grunt/Fang

"I'm not scared of bullies! You never back down before the enemy!"

A black-and-tan male "Fierce Dog" (Doberman Pinscher) who is Storm's and Wiggle's litter-brother.

  • All There in the Manual: He was rescued by Lucky and Mickey at 8-10 weeks old.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Even as a young pup, Fang knew he was destined to be strong. As a result he's always been very headstrong and reckless.
  • Bullying a Dragon: As a puppy he threatened a full-grown bear, even after it almost killed him, because he didn't believe in backing down from a fight.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Grunt gets into trouble when he hurts Nose during a play-fight. Moon and Fiery accuse Grunt of trying to attack their daughter, but Martha and Lucky insist it was an accident.
  • Ear Ache: His ears are crudely mutilated into points by the Fierce Dogs.
  • Enfante Terrible: Fang seems to relish in the stereotype of Dobermans attacking (and maybe even killing) other dogs.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: This is why he joins Blade's pack.
  • Meaningful Name: Lucky and Mickey name him Grunt because of the way he talks. Later, his adult name, Fang, sounds tougher, like a true Fierce Dog.
  • Meaningful Rename: From Grunt to Fang.
  • Mouthy Kid: As a pup, he's very loose-lipped and self-confident.
  • Pride: His main faults are being cocky and prideful to a fault.

"Beta"

"Sweet has eaten the common prey! She had deprived the pack and its pups, and filled her own belly!"

A large, red female Irish setter mix who is the beta of the Wild Pack before Sweet joins them.

  • Alpha Bitch: In both "Moon's Choice" and "Sweet's Journey", she has this personality.
  • Evil Redhead: Is an antagonist, and is red-furred.
  • The Exile: Kicked out of the Wild Pack by Alpha after she frames Sweet for neglecting her duties and later eating a rabbit without permission.
  • Frame-Up: Does this to Sweet, though the others figure it out quickly.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Calls Sweet "Sweetie", to the Greyhound's displeasure.
  • No Name Given: Her real name is never revealed.
  • Number Two: To Alpha. Before her exile.

Tiny/Sky

"Storm would never hurt us. I don't think she's the bad dog, and I don't think she'd lie, either."

One of Lucky and Sweet's pups, a female Sheltie/retriever/Greyhound mix with short golden fur and pale eyes.

  • Meaningful Name: Her original name, Tiny, was given to her because she was the smallest of her siblings. She later picked her adult name, Sky, to honor the Sky-Dogs.
  • Meaningful Rename: She was originally named "Tiny".
  • Near-Death Experience: She nearly drowns in the endless lake, but is saved by Storm. Later dropped by Breeze on to a cliff, but survives.

Nibble/Forest

"It looks so slippery. And steep. And high."

One of Lucky and Sweet's pups, a female Sheltie/retriever/Greyhound mix with short, tan fur, a long muzzle, and brown eyes.

  • Damsel in Distress: Breeze kidnaps her and her siblings, and eventually tries to sacrifice her to the Fear-Dog by dropping her from a building.
  • Meaningful Name: She picked her adult name, Forest, to honor the Forest-Dog.
  • Meaningful Rename: She was originally named "Nibble".
  • Sibling Team: Cousin team, but supposedly no prey gets away from her and Tough when they work together.

Tumble/River

"So Fluff and I ran away. We ran and ran in the dark,but...Nibble...she didn't come with us."

One of Lucky and Sweet's pups, a male Sheltie/retriever/Greyhound mix with shaggy golden fur, a long muzzle, and brown eyes.

  • Meaningful Name: He was originally named Tumble for rolling around before he could walk. He later picked his adult name, River, to honor the River-Dog.
  • Meaningful Rename: He was originally named "Tumble".

Fluff/Earth

"It was so cold and we were so tired and we were scared and we were running..."

One of Lucky and Sweet's pups, a female Sheltie/retriever/Greyhound mix with long, dark brown fur and brown eyes.

  • Meaningful Name: She was originally named Fluff because of her long fur. She later picked her adult name, Earth, to honor the Earth-Dog.
  • Meaningful Rename: She was originally named "Fluff".

Nip/Tough

"No prey gets away from me and Forest, not once we have a plan."

One of Bella and Arrow's pups, a male Sheltie/retriever/Doberman mix with black-and-sandy fur and brown eyes.

  • Meaningful Name: He chose his adult name, Tough, to honor both his dead sister Tufty and his Fierce Dog heritage.
  • Meaningful Rename: He was originally named "Nip".
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His adult name, Tough, suggests strength.
  • Sibling Team: Cousin team, but he has this dynamic with Forest, who he grew up with, and he claims nothing gets away from them when they hunt together. Also helps his brother Scramble move a boulder blocking the entrance to the tunnel some of Lucky and Sweet's pups are trapped in.
  • Tagalong Kid: He and his brother are this when attempting to rescue Tumble and Fluff from the tunnel Breeze left them in.

Scramble/Golden

"We'll be very careful, but we want to help."

One of Bella and Arrow's pups, a male Sheltie/retriever/Doberman mix with black-and-sandy fur and brown eyes.

  • Meaningful Name: He chose his adult name, Golden, to honor his mother, as well as some patches of fur he believes he got from her.
  • Meaningful Rename: He was originally named "Scramble".
  • Sibling Team: Helps his brother Nip move a boulder blocking the entrance to the tunnel some of Lucky and Sweet's pups are trapped in.
  • Tagalong Kid: He and his brother are this when attempting to rescue Tumble and Fluff from the tunnel Breeze left them in.

Tufty

One of Bella and Arrow's pups, a female Sheltie/retriever/Doberman mix with golden fur and a black ring marking on her head.

  • Death of a Child: She was stillborn.
  • Distinguishing Mark: She has a black ring marking on her head. Due to her being stillborn, and her role as a Spirit Advisor, it's easy to see this as resembling a halo.
  • Spirit Advisor: Is a spirit who plays with her brothers as a pup, though only they can see her. Later helps the Wild Pack find Lucky and Sweet's pups after Breeze kidnaps them by appearing to the pups and comforting them, and reveals herself, along with Whisper, to Storm in the final battle.
  • The Voiceless: As a spirit, she never speaks. Storm assumes she doesn't know how, due to never getting the opportunity.

     Fierce Dogs

Blade

"I have seen it—the end of this world. Just as when the Big Growl came and the lakes of blood poured from the Earth-Dog's wounds; I foresaw that too! Now she is in pain and furious. Only more blood will avenge her wounds!"

A black-and-brown female with a white fang-shaped mark below one of her ears. She's the leader of the Fierce Dog pack.

  • Ax-Crazy: Blade believes that any dog born after the Big Growl is bound to bring danger, so she sets out to kill said dogs, even her own pup.
  • Distinguishing Mark: She has a fang-shaped patch of white fur on her neck.
  • Kick the Dog: Believing that Fang was one of the prophesied pups born after the Big Growl that would destroy them, Blade slaughters him in front of everyone.
  • Large and in Charge: She is described as the biggest dog in her pack.
  • The Leader: She is the alpha of the pack.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Her name is "Blade", after the weapon.
  • Offing the Offspring: She kills her own pup to try and prevent a second Big Growl.
  • Team Killer: Killed Morningstar, her own pack mate, because Morningstar was trying to protect her pups. Also killed her own pup, and both Wiggle and Fang, two of Morningstar's pups who were part of her pack at the time, because they were born after the Big Growl.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Blade will do anything to prevent a second Big Growl, even killing puppies.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Kills Fang after Storm refuses to and firmly establishes her loyalty to the Wild Pack. Would have killed him sooner, but thought, until that point, that he could be used to manipulate Storm.

Mace

"Don't worry, Blade. We'll get the truth out of them. They'll be sorry they ever tried to steal from us."

A large black-and-tan male. He's the beta of the Fierce Dog Pack.

"We should kill them, Blade."

A black-and-tan male.

Pistol

"No dog likes a traitor, do they?"

A black-and-tan female.

Brute

A black-and-tan male.

Ripper

A black-and-tan female.

Revolver

A black-and-tan male.

Axe

"The longpaws will pay for this! They are not like my masters. My masters were good, and strong, and clever. But my masters are gone, and I am a Free Dog now. No creature keeps Axe in a cage!"

A large black-and-brown male.

  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: He's named after a tool (that can also double as a weapon).
  • Senseless Sacrifice: After being freed by the patrol coming to save Fiery, he attempts to attack the humans who captured him instead of simply escaping. This of course results in his recapture, and presumed death.
  • Series Continuity Error: He's not seen again after "The Broken Path", presumably killed there, but appears in the pack list of "Storm of Dogs".

Scythe

A large black-and-tan female.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: She's named after a pointed tool.
  • Uncertain Doom: One of the female Fierce Dogs is killed in the battle in "Storm of Dogs" before Blade's death. Since Ripper and Pistol both appear in "The Gathering Darkness", it's unclear if the dead female was Scythe or Cannon.

Bludgeon

A large black-and-tan male.

Musket

A black-and-brown male.

Cannon

A brown-and-tan female.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: She's named after a weapon.
  • Uncertain Doom: One of the female Fierce Dogs is killed in the battle in "Storm of Dogs" before Blade's death. Since Ripper and Pistol both appear in "The Gathering Darkness", it's unclear if the dead female was Scythe or Cannon.

Lance

A black-and-tan male.

Arrow

"Honestly, Bella, I'm not that bothered. Maybe I should worry more, but who cares about them? I don't care what they think or what they say. Not when I'm this happy."

A young black-and-tan male.

  • Good Parents: He's devastated when his and Bella's only daughter is stillborn, but he wishes her a hello/goodbye, telling her that he and Bella will love her for always.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He hates how the Fierce Dog Pack is run under Blade and willingly helps the Wild Pack in their final battle.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: While not as intimidating sounding as his packmates, Arrow is still named after a weapon.
  • Official Couple: With Bella, though her pack doesn't take to kindly to him.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His and Bella's daughter, Tufty, is stillborn.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Leaves the Fierce Dogs after Blade kills Fang. Decides to leave the Wild Pack because of how everyone treats him all the time and the fact that some members even spy on him. Bella chooses to go with him.

Bullet

A smaller black-and-brown male. Is the omega of the Fierce Dogs. Until they are joined by the wolf-dog who formerly led the Wild Pack.

Morningstar

“But leave me be, pups...”

A dark female. Is the mother of Grunt/Fang, Lick/Storm, and Wiggle.

  • Mama Bear: Fought Blade and died to protect her pups.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: She's named after a medieval weapon.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Her death leads Lucky to bring her daughter and sons into the Wild Pack, leading to the rest of the series.
  • Posthumous Character: Zigzagged. Lucky hears her howling in pain when heading back to the city, but doesn't go in to help her. By the time he and Mickey are returning, and encounter her, she's already dead. Her only living appearance is in Storm's flashback at the beginning of "A Pack Divided", where she has just been wounded and crawls away so her pups won't see her die.

Calamity

"This is my family. The Rancher. Sundance and Zorro and Belle. Whatever else they are, they're my Pack."

A young black-and-tan female guard dog at a ranch who Alpha was once briefly mated to.

  • Agony of the Feet: She and her mate are scarred on their paws for failing to prevent a coyote from killing one of the rancher's hens.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: After she and Alpha (at that time called Wolf) are punished for failing to prevent a coyote from killing one of the rancher's hens, he wants to leave the ranch, but she cannot. He offers to stay with her, but she knows if he stays he will eventually come to hate her for it, so she tells him to leave, and gives him a head start before raising the alarm.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Alpha. Her choosing her Pack over him, as well as the Pack scarring him, is the reason why he hates Fierce Dogs.
  • Loved I Not Honor More: Refuses to leave with her mate, as the rancher and her Pack are her family.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: She's named after a disaster, and is dangerous.
  • Only Friend: To her mate, before they became mates, as the other members of her Pack dislike him for his half-wolf heritage.

Sundance

"You're in charge. You're to make sure the sheep are safe, but you're also to make sure Wolf behaves himself. I don't want any mistakes."

The large black-and-brown male leader of the guard dogs at the ranch Alpha briefly was held at.

  • The Bully: Towards the half-wolf who joins their Pack, criticizing and mocking him at every opportunity.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Occasionally, when taunting the half-wolf. One example: "What incredible teeth you must have. I look forward to seeing you bite straight through that chain".
  • The Dragon: While he is the leader of the guard dogs, he's ultimately this to the rancher.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: The reason he dislikes their newest recruit.
  • The Leader: Of the Longpaw Fangs.
  • You Killed My Mother: Taunts the half-wolf by telling him they killed one of the wolf pack they drove out, who was asking what happened to her pup. Alpha loses it, but doesn't try to take revenge after he's calmed down.

Zorro

"He should sleep in a dirt heap."

The black-and-brown male beta of the guard dogs at the ranch Alpha briefly was held at.

  • The Bully: Towards the half-wolf who joins their Pack, making no effort to ever be nice to him.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Why he dislikes their newest recruit.
  • Number Two: To Sundance. Though it's difficult to prove, given how small the Pack is and he's never seen away from Sundance or giving orders to any of the others. However, their captive recognizes him as the beta.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He's the beta, but screws up trying to herd a sheep, which Calamity and Wolf later laugh about.

Belle

"We've driven them farther into the mountains. They won't be back to raid the Rancher's sheep. We made sure of that, even though they'd have been too frightened anyway."

A black-and-tan female guard dog at the ranch Alpha was briefly held at.

  • The Bully: Towards the half-wolf who joins their Pack. It gets worse after he turns out to be good at the jobs the rancher assigns him.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Why she dislikes their newest recruit.

     Terror's Pack

Terror

"I'll have whatever territory I choose. And I will mark it with the blood of any dog foolish enough to cross me and defy the Fear-Dog!"

A massive, yellow-eyed male pit bull/mastiff mix who leads his own pack.

  • Ax-Crazy: He's literally a mad dog.
  • Bloody Horror: Storm rips off his lower jaw before killing him.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Lucky sees Terror as this, having strange wide yellow eyes, sores all over his body, and having seizures that make him believe in the "Fear-Dog".
  • Kick the Dog: He beats up his pack members for only the slightest of faults.
  • Large and in Charge: He's the largest dog in his pack, and one of the biggest dogs in the entire series.
  • Pet the Dog: Retroactively. In "The Gathering Darkness" arc it's revealed he took Chase in after her Pack kicked her out.

Whisper

"Are you the Storm?"

A male whippet/Blue Heeler mix.

  • Hero-Worshipper: To him, Storm is a great hero who saved his pack from Terror. Whisper is always in awe of Storm and loves to be around her. But this does get on Storm's nerves, and Storm bluntly tells him to back off.
  • I Owe You My Life: A variation: He and the other members of the pack agree to help the Wild Pack fight the Fierce Dogs to protect Storm because the aforementioned dog saved his pack from Terror.
  • Killed Off for Real: He's killed at the end of "A Pack Divided". Storm spends the rest of the series trying to figure out who killed him.
  • Spirit Advisor: After his death, he often appears in Storm's dreams just as something bad is about to happen. He also returns with Tufty in the final battle.

Breeze

"It would be an honor to fight beside the dogs who defeated Terror."

A small female collie/chocolate lab mix.

  • Ax-Crazy: Beneath her sweet, calm exterior, Breeze is almost as deranged as Terror.
  • Avenging the Villain: She's been the one murdering other dogs to get revenge for Storm killing Terror.
  • Big Bad: Of "The Gathering Darkness" arc.
  • The Chess Master: Breeze is a deviously cunning and skillfully manipulative strategist who is easily able to exploit a situation to her advantage and stay several steps ahead of others.
  • Frame-Up: Does this to Moon, and later Storm to sow discord among the Wild Pack.
  • Friend to All Children: Subverted. She seems to be one of the best at babysitting Lucky and Sweet's pups, but it's revealed to be an act once she's revealed to be the villain.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Literally. Breeze is probably the most cunning, deceitful and manipulative character in the whole franchise. She almost effortlessly plays other dogs, even her own pack, like pawns, sowing chaos and disorder among them without drawing suspicion to herself, and even after Storm realizes that she is the traitor, Breeze still manages to deceive and manipulate her at times.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Sort of. She's surprisingly strong for her small size.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Does this to a deer, putting glass in it to injure Twitch.
  • Undying Loyalty: Out of all the dogs in Terror's pack, Breeze is the only one who is truly loyal to him. It is later revealed that she took his death murderously poorly.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Kidnaps Lucky and Sweet's pups, and presumably killed a fox cub.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Does this twice, once to scare the pack, and once after Storm confronts her, she angers the Fierce Dog and bites herself to claim Storm did it.
  • Yandere: Implied. In the final book, Storm observes that Breeze genuinely "loved" Terror, and Breeze herself calls him, "my Terror", implying that she was in love with him, which would explain her viciously zealous loyalty to him.

Splash

"There's no rule that an Alpha has to look a certain way. Twitch is a capable hunter and fighter. And he always stood up to Terror better than the rest of us. He's smart; he knows how to survive."

A small, thin black male dog of unknown breed. He's the beta of the pack.

  • I Owe You My Life: A variation: He and the other members of the pack agree to help the Wild Pack fight the Fierce Dogs to protect Storm because the aforementioned dog saved his pack from Terror.
  • Killed Off for Real: Dies in the final battle with the Fierce Dogs in "Storm of Dogs".
  • Leader Wannabe: Subverted. He, like everyone else in the pack, wants Twitch to lead after Terror's death. However, he does challenge Twitch (only to submit instantly) when Moon points out this isn't how a dog becomes leader.
  • Number Two: To Twitch, after he becomes leader. Twitch also claims he was this to Terror, but Splash states Terror didn't really have a beta.

Rake

"I don't take commands from you! Alpha said Twitch was in charge of the patrol dogs. That's who tells me what to do- Twitch! Not you!"

A tall, scrawny white male dog of unknown breed, though at least similar to an Irish Wolfhound.

  • Defector from Decadence: In "The Gathering Darkness" arc, he and a few others leave the Wild Pack to form their own pack after dogs are suspiciously killed.
  • I Owe You My Life: A variation: He and the other members of the pack agree to help the Wild Pack fight the Fierce Dogs to protect Storm because the aforementioned dog saved his pack from Terror.
  • The Leader: Of his own pack, which splits off from the Wild Pack in "The Gathering Darkness" arc.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As the leader of his own pack, he has no prejudice toward Fierce Dogs despite his experiences with them.
  • Start My Own: In "The Gathering Darkness" arc, he leads a few dogs from the Wild Pack and starts their own.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Twitch, even after his pack merges with the Wild Pack, he and the others from it still take orders from Twitch.

Woody

"Typical! It's Alpha's Pack again, thinking the rules don't apply to them."

A large, brown male Beagle mix.

  • Number Two: After a few of the dogs leave to form their own pack, he becomes the beta of it, to Rake's alpha.

Ruff

"One Fierce Dog stands up for the other one. What a surprise."

A small black female dog of unknown breed. She's the omega of the pack.

  • Defector from Decadence: In "The Gathering Darkness" arc, she and a few others leave the Wild Pack to form their own pack after dogs are suspiciously killed.
  • I Owe You My Life: A variation: She and the other members of the pack agree to help the Wild Pack fight the Fierce Dogs to protect Storm because the aforementioned dog saved her pack from Terror.
  • Killed Offscreen: Her body is brought back to the Wild Pack's camp by her pack in "The Final Battle".

Chase

"We'll do as our Alpha orders, but I agree with Splash. I want to help Storm."

A small ginger female dog of unknown breed.

  • The Exile: Tells Storm in "Red Moon Rising" that she was kicked out of her original pack because she was sick, and Terror took her in.
  • I Owe You My Life: A variation: She and the other members of the pack agree to help the Wild Pack fight the Fierce Dogs to protect Storm because the aforementioned dog saved her pack from Terror.
  • The Load: Kicked out of her original pack because they thought she would be this.
  • Red Herring: Storm suspects her of being the one who killed the other dogs to avenge Terror, as Terror gave her a home after she was kicked out of her original pack. However, it's actually Breeze.

     Sweet's former Pack

Callie

"I would run for longpaws. They liked that. They liked to see us swift-dogs run in a circle, chasing a dead hare. As if we thought it lived and we could catch it. Ha! We liked to win, that was all."

The beta of Sweet's former pack, and the only one other than Sweet to survive the Big Growl, despite being in the Trap House at the time. She's a sandy-colored female Greyhound.

"Alpha"

The leader of Sweet's former pack. A large male Greyhound with brown-and-white fur.

  • Killed Offscreen: Like all the members of the pack except for Sweet and Callie, he's killed when the Trap House collapses in the Big Growl.
  • The Leader: Of his pack.
  • No Name Given: His real name is never revealed.

"Omega"

The lowest ranked member of Sweet's former pack, a small black-and-white female Greyhound.

  • Killed Offscreen: She, like most of her pack, died when the Trap House collapsed in the Big Growl.
  • No Name Given: Her real name is never revealed.

Fleet

An elderly brown female Greyhound.

  • Killed Offscreen: She, like most of her pack, died when the Trap House collapsed in the Big Growl.
  • Meaningful Name: Fleet is another word for fast, which a Greyhound used for racing normally is.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted, she shares a name with an older male wolf in the wolf pack in "Alpha's Tale".

Rocket

A young gray-and-white male Greyhound.

  • Killed Offscreen: Died in the collapsing Trap House, along with most of his pack.
  • Meaningful Name: He's presumably fast like a rocket, or at least once was.

Brook

A black male Greyhound with very long legs.

  • Killed Offscreen: He suffered the same fate as most of his pack, being crushed in a collapsing Trap House.

     Moon's former Pack

Hunter

"You're pathetic. Choices? Omegas don't make choices! Hunt-dogs and Patrol Dogs don't vote for their leaders! Your Pack's mine for the taking. It's my right! Your Father-Dog gave me that right. He chose me to be Alpha!"

A large gray-and-brown male dog in Moon's former pack who her parent dogs chose to be her mate, and her beta when she would become alpha.

  • All There in the Manual: Gillian Phillip has stated he's a Great Dane.
  • Arranged Marriage: Moon's parents, who were alpha and beta, chose him to be her mate. She met Fiery and became attracted to him around the same time that Hunter showed his true colors when the pack was struck by sickness, and Moon chose Fiery instead.
  • Control Freak: Mulch states Rush and Meadow, the dogs who left with him and later left him, abandoned him because he was this, and called him a "control wolf".
  • Dirty Coward: Abandons his pack when they all become sick, to avoid getting sick himself. When he returns and they reject him, he is mentioned to be running with his tail between his legs. Snap even calls him a coward.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first scene has him enter with a large prey animal, and tell his alpha that the prey was too quick for some of the patrol, disparaging his fellow hunters and showing his ego and sense of superiority.
  • The Exile: When he returns to the pack and attempts to claim leadership after he abandoned them when they needed him, Moon refuses to let him return and has the others chase him out forever.
  • Hate Sink: His actions and personality show that he's a horrible dog.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When he returns and is asked where the others who left with him are, he claims they got sick and died despite him trying to help them. Mulch points out that he saw them, and they said they were leaving him because of his personality.
  • Jerk Jock: His personality.
  • Leader Wannabe: Leaves the pack with a few others to start his own, with him as leader. After the others leave him, he returns to the pack he abandoned, thinking they'll be desperate enough to accept him as leader, but they're not, and they don't. In the latter case, he even claims the previous alpha chose him to be the next one.
  • Meaningful Name: He's a hunter for the pack, so his name describes his job.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. There's a dog named Old Hunter in "The Empty City", who's also in the pack lists until "Storm of Dogs".
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Abandons his pack because he doesn't want to deal with the sickness.
  • Self-Serving Memory: Claims, when trying to take leadership of the remaining pack, that the last alpha chose him to be the next leader, even though he chose Moon to be the next leader with Hunter as her beta.
  • Start My Own: Tries this by leaving the pack with others as their leader. It doesn't work, since they abandon him because of his personality, leaving him alone.

"Alpha"

"Exactly, Moon. I'm not well. Don't be scared. I've always known you'll make a wonderful Pack leader. You're levelheaded, you have plenty of dog-sense. That's exactly what the Pack needs right now: a dog who won't panic or make rash choices. Please, Moon. Do this for me."

Moon's father, a black-and-white male Border Collie, and the leader of the pack.

"Beta"

"If you had left the others to suffer, Moon, you would not have been a Pack dog at all."

Moon's mother, a black-and-white female Border Collie, and second-in-command of the pack.

Star

"Oh, Moon, have some fun while you still can. You won't have any time to play at all once you're Alpha!"

  • The Voiceless: He is never heard speaking.

Pebble

"Whatever you ask, Alpha."

A young, black, sleek-furred female dog of unknown breed.

  • From Bad to Worse: After a fight with coyotes, she is injured. She then comes down with the sickness, which according to Snap, isn't helping her.
  • Ill Girl: Comes down with the disease eventually, after a fight with coyotes.
  • Killed Offscreen. She's last mentioned alive to have just come down with the sickness as Moon has. After Moon recovers, Pebble has already died.
  • Undying Loyalty: To her alpha.

Rush

"Alpha, we're a peaceful Pack, but I don't like these dogs trying to push us around."

A golden brown male terrier with short hair and a short tail.

  • Everyone Has Standards: Doesn't like the Wild Pack making demands on his pack's territory.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Along with Hunter and Meadow, he abandons the pack once they all begin to come down with the sickness. He and Meadow later abandon Hunter after he tries to boss them around.

Meadow

"I don't know. But if you want to go and look, I'll stay with Fly."

A small, beige female terrier with dark ears.

  • Nice Girl: Tries to help Fly get better, though this is before the sickness becomes severe.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Along with Hunter and Rush, she abandons the pack once they all begin to come down with the sickness. She and Rush later abandon Hunter after he tries to boss them around.

     Wolves

In general

Similar to dogs, and can breed with them, but dislike them and are territorial.

  • Fantastic Racism: Look down on dogs, most of the time.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: In addition to disapprovng of dogs, they dislike any pups who are half-dog. This includes the half-wolf former alpha of the Wild Pack.
  • Meaningful Name: As pups, they are all named Pup to show that they are still children. When their back teeth come in, they are named by their pack for the qualities they seemingly possess. And when dying, they are renamed Fading.
  • One-Steve Limit: A variation. All pups are named "Pup" until they are given their adult name by their pack. This can result in two or more pack members having the same name at the same time. In "The Exile's Journey", it's revealed that not only are all wolves, when dying of old age, named Fading, but their names are taken back by their pack and can be given again to new pups, which has resulted in many wolves in a bloodline having the same name as their ancestors, one of these being Thoughtful.

Thoughtful

"I prefer to hunt alone. Gives me time to think."

A male wolf in the Still-Water Pack who encounters Storm after she leaves the Wild Pack.

  • Dead Guy Junior: He mentions many of his ancestors were also named Thoughtful.
  • I Work Alone: Prefers to hunt alone.

  • Shared Family Quirks: Shares his Nice Guy personality with his sister Peaceful.

Peaceful

"Most of my kind consider dogs our enemy. To them, I am the worst sort of traitor. But two days is not very long. I was given a light punishment because I am the Healer wolf, and they don't want me to be away long, not really. I must respect that and not make things worse, for me or my Pack."

Thoughtful's sister, the Healer of the Still-Water Pack.

"Alpha"

"We thank you for the good hunting, and we thank the hunters who have brought us this feast."

The female leader of the Still-Water Pack.

Fading

"I'm already dying. Find somewhere else to scavenge your next meal."

An old male wolf in the Still-Water Pack who has reached the end of his life.

  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Subverted. He dies alone, under the moon, and specifically tells Storm to go away and leave him in peace.
  • Meaningful Rename: He states he gave his name back to his Pack to be given to another cub one day, and is now called Fading, as are all dying wolves.
  • No Name Given: His original name before dying is not revealed.

A male wolf who once knocked out his tooth.

  • The Ghost: He's never seen, only mentioned by Thoughtful.

     Alpha's former pack

Graceful

  • Disappointed in You: To her son, when he disparages his father. Also silently to her older son Quick, when he claims her younger son isn't really his brother.
  • Good Parents: To her son, or at least she tries to be.
  • Killed Offscreen: After her son is captured at the ranch, the guard dogs attack the pack to drive them away, and kill her as a message when she lags behind trying to find out what happened. Her death isn't shown, but the guard dogs later taunt her son about it.
  • Only Friend: Again to her son, since most of her pack openly dislikes him for his half-dog heritage.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Her litter with a dog all died, except for the one who eventually became Alpha.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With her second mate, who her pack disapproved of.

The older half-brother of the half-wolf alpha of the Wild Pack. He has gray fur and yellow eyes.

  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Led a hunting team to raid a ranch for sheep, believing there was only one old dog guarding them. He was wrong.
  • Wants a Prize for Basic Decency: Expects his younger half-brother to be grateful for any name, even one that will forever remind him that he's different.

A young gray-and-cream female wolf in the pack Alpha belonged to before forming the Wild Pack.

  • Ambiguously Related: To Strident, who received his name on the same night she received hers, suggesting they may be littermates.
  • The Bully: To the wolf-dog.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The wolf-dog claims to have beaten her easily.
  • Dirty Coward: After Dog challenges her for defying his orders and costing them prey, she looks scared until Brave backs her up.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Stated to have a vicious temper even at the best of times.
  • Karma Houdini: She isn't punished for screwing up a hunt.
  • Kick the Dog: Messes up a hunt, and refuses to help drag back the spoils, seemingly for no reason other than to embarrass the wolf-dog.

  • Ironic Name: Dog accuses her of this when she doesn't defend him against Daring and Brave.
  • Nice Girl: Doesn't judge Dog for his heritage and offers to help bring the one deer they caught back to camp.
  • Only Sane Woman: Doesn't get caught up in the anger of the younger wolves, instead following Dog's orders. Also points out to Dog that challenging Daring is futile since he's already higher-ranked than her. And there's her quote.

Strident

"So you should be, runt. Why can't you look where you're going?"

A dark gray male wolf in the pack who is Daring's age.

  • Ambiguously Related: He received his name on the same night as Daring, suggesting they may be littermates.

Bold

"Pity, in a way. The last Howl wasn't such a perfect night, when Strident and Daring got their names. And tonight it's that half-breed runt's turn."

An older light gray male wolf in the pack.

  • Skewed Priorities: Comments its a pity that the half-wolf is getting his Name on a perfect night, as opposed to Daring and Strident getting theirs on a less perfect one.

Fleet

"Oh, it hardly matters. Whatever Name he gets, it won't be of any consequence. He'll be Omega soon enough."

A smaller, older brown-and-cream male wolf in the pack.

  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. There's also a female Greyhound named Fleet in Sweet's former pack.

"Come forward Pup, son of Graceful. You have come of age, Pup, and now you join our Pack as a true wolf. Wolves of my Pack. Name this Pup for his qualities."

The leader of the wolf pack. She has pale fur and yellow eyes.

"Beta"

"You lot! What do you think you're doing? Daring, see to Alpha's bedding. Strident, Fleet wants a young wolf to take a message. Get out of my sight! And the rest of you. Go! Not you, Pup."

The shaggy gray male who is second-in-command of the wolf pack.

  • All There in the Manual: He and his alpha are mates.
  • Disappointed in You: The look in his eyes implies he's disappointed when the half-wolf and his team bring back only one deer.
  • No Name Given: His real name is never revealed.

Wise

"Longpaw Fangs! The longpaws use them as weapons."

An older, tawny male wolf in the pack.

  • Mr. Exposition: A quick one, but he's the one who tells the half-wolf what Fierce Dogs are, shortly before he encounters them for the first time.

"Omega"

The lowest ranked member of the pack. She's light gray, and frail.

  • The Ghost: She's never seen, only mentioned. And mentioned to be old.
  • No Name Given: Her real name is never revealed.
  • Uncertain Doom: She's stated to be frail and ancient. It's also mentioned the weakest of the wolves died the winter the half-wolf got his name, so it's possible, though never stated, that she didn't survive it.

     Foxes

In general

They are enemies of the dogs, competing with them for territory and food.

  • Always Chaotic Evil: Dogs see them as enemies, and vice versa.
  • Misplaced Retribution: In "The Gathering Darkness" arc, they are on both the giving and receiving ends of this. Thanks to Breeze's machinations.
  • The Oathbreaker: The pack in "A Hidden Enemy" betrays the Leashed Dogs when attacking the Wild Pack, forcing the packs to join together to drive them out.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Have no problem attacking pups or pregnant female dogs.
  • You No Take Candle: They speak in broken sentences, unlike the dogs.

Fox Mist

A fox who is captured by the Wild Pack in "Dead of Night".

  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: Storm realizes she is pregnant after they capture her.

  • Pregnant Badass: Despite being pregnant, she takes part in the fight against the dogs.
  • Villain Respect: Enemy respect, as she isn't evil and her pack didn't do the original thing they accused her of, but she does respect Storm to some extent, believing she is the only dog with a true name.

Cub Fire

A fox cub who is killed and left outside the Wild Pack's camp.

Fox Ash

"No more! We stand!"

A female member of the fox pack in "The Gathering Darkness" arc.
