Go To

Pokémon World

The world of Pokémon, which is filled with the similarly named creatures, and is the home dimension of Acerola.

Ultra Rangers

A group of teenagers gathered by Lusamine to help deal with the supernatural threats of Alola.
    open/close all folders
    In General
  • Action Girl: All three of the female members.
  • Adaptational Badass: Oddly enough not them, but their suits. In canon, they were ordinary suits. In here, they're strong enough to withstand an explosion.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Go from the Ultra Guardians to the Ultra Rangers in this story.
  • The Artifact: The "Ultra" part of their name was a reference to how they were first formed to combat the Ultra Beasts. Come the events of the story, the "Ultra" is kept despite there being no Ultra Beasts in sight.
  • Demoted to Extra: Originally the main protagonists of the original show, they're now relegated to supporting characters while Acerola's team are the main characters.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Their uniforms are skintight and made of Sensual Spandex, though Lusamine argues it's not spandex.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: Three boys and three girls.
  • Heroism Won't Pay the Bills: This trope Being averted is why they join, as Lusamine says she'll give them a salary if they accept.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Not they themselves, but their suits, which according to Wicke are so strong that they could withstand an explosion and come out unscathed.
  • Only in It for the Money: Most of them get immediately on board with becoming Ultra Rangers once Lusamine hastily brings up that she'll give them a salary.
  • Refusal of the Call: Most of them are initially reluctant to join the team. It's only when Lusamine offers to give them a salary do they accept.
  • Recruit Teenagers with Attitude: What Lusamine's intention for the group originally was, though in practice, barely any of them have the attitude to match.
  • Sensual Spandex: While Lusamine argues otherwise, the Ultra Rangers' uniform are skintight and accentuate all their curves, male and female.

    Ash Ketchum

Ash Ketchum

A Trainer from Kanto who has come to Alola in his quest to become a Pokémon Master.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: Despite eventually learning that Acerola got taken by the Infinity Train, this Ash doesn't go through the same Guilt Complex situation his Blossoming Trail self did.
  • Adaptational Badass: He actually knows how to use his aura powers in story, though he's noted to not be nearly as good as Acerola.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Kind of. In Blossoming Trail, Ash appears to be bi due to eventually coming to notice the girl's affection for him and eventually getting together with Trip, while here, he's either asexual, disinterested in romance, or just highly oblivious, as he tells the girls when they ask if he has a type.
  • Always Second Best: It's not brought up often, but Ash's handle of his Aura powers is noted to not be nearly as refined as Acerola's. This doesn't bother him unless someone suggests his lack of skill is based on laziness.
  • Aura Vision: Heavily Downplayed. His Aura powers allow him to sense the ghosts of the Alolan royal family, but his inexperience means he can't actually see them.
  • Blue Is Heroic: His Ultra Ranger outfit has blue highlights.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Ash is a legitimately talented trainer who could train his Aura powers if he wanted to, but he'd much rather focus on becoming a Pokémon Master in the meantime. The fact this would take years to accomplish such training without partaking in pretty much anything else doesn't help.
  • Chaste Hero: Ash is Oblivious to Hints and love as well, as the girls of Alola show interest in him with the guy none the wiser. He does mention he's not uninterested in girls, he's just clueless and fairly oblivious about the whole thing.
  • Chick Magnet: He's got the affection of all the Alolan girls (Mallow, Lillie, Lana, and Acerola) with some of the queens taking notice. Not that he notices, of course.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Has gotten the affection of four Alolan girls, all while having no idea about it.
  • Disappeared Dad: He never knew his dad and his mom doesn't talk about him.
  • Friend to All Children: He claims to have helped Ilima with the children at his school before coming to see Acerola.
  • Hero of Another Story: He's had a long list of adventures before the story, which also includes the movies, since the events of Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel are confirmed to have happened.
  • Inept Mage: Aura User in this case. While he has Aura powers, his actual control over them is rather lacking, and he's not interested in training them either.
  • Loved by All: Most people who meet him end up liking him, and from the Alolans, most are either friendly with him or outright crushing on him. The only exception shown so far is Princess Allie, who's not the most moral person around.
  • Nice Guy: It's Ash Ketchum, guys. He's more than happy to accompany Acerola around Alola, and is in general very friendly.
  • Oblivious to Hints: Mallow's several attempts to tease go right over his head. The same happens when Lana tries to tease him later, with Ash being so oblivious she actually gets angry about it.
  • Oblivious to Love: Like usual, all the Alolan girls have the hots for him, but he doesn't seem to notice.
  • Simple-Minded Wisdom: When Acerola asks him why he hasn't trained his Aura powers that much, he explains that if he did, he would be left with little time to follow his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master. Notably, this is one of the very few times one of the Alolan royal family members has something positive to say in regards to anyone.
  • To Be a Master: Beyond his typical goals in regards to this, in story he's seeking to obtain one of each type Z-crystal. At the start of story he's well on his way in that regards.
  • Token Wizard: Like Acerola is to her team, Ash is the only Ultra Ranger with Aura powers.

    Mallow

Mallow

A green-haired Grass-Type trainer. Also a former Passenger.
  • Action Survivor: As a former Passenger, she must've been this in order to survive her trip.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: On the one hand, her telling the truth about the Train to her friends and them being understanding about it averts the eventual fallout that befell her Blossomverse counterpart.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: On the other hand, she also has to contend with one of her crushes going on a date with her brother and potentially having Incompatible Orientation.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Not by much, since she still kept the Train's existence a secret from her friends for an arbitrary reason. However, as soon as she hears the possibility that Acerola might be there, she spills the beans and reveals everything she knows with some prodding, while her Blossomverse counterpart kept quiet about it the entirety of Gladion's trip and only revealed what she knew during the Vermillion City fiasco.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: She and Mina were implied to be friends in canon, since the latter's painting can be found in her family restaurant, but they didn't interact much if at all in the games or anime. In here, they're Amicable Exes.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Mallow didn't really seem to go down any road in canon, while here, she's either bi with an emphasis on girls, or a lesbian, given she's shown attraction to Ash, Olivia, Kiawe's Mom, and had a thing with Mina in the past.
  • Ambiguously Bi: She has the hots for Ash like everybody else, but also finds both Olivia and Kiawe's Mom hot, used to date Mina, and her attraction to women is more prominent than men.
  • Amicable Exes: With Mina, though she nervously tries to downplay it when it's brought up to avoid Lana teasing her about it.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Like in Blossomverse canon, she didn't believe her friends would believe her about the Infinity Train despite not only living in a world populated by fantastical creatures, but had just recently been through the Pokémon equivalent of an Alien Invasion. Luckily for her, everybody's pretty understanding when she spills the beans.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: The very beginning of the story had Mallow muse when her brother would get a date. Come chapter 5, and he eventually does get a date... In the form of Olivia, who Mallow's crushing on.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Possibly. When trying to figure out if Ash Has a Type Lana references girls who are thin or chunky, and Mallow takes offense to the description as Lillie was specifically noted as being slender. As Ash outright says that Mallow is hardly fat, it isn't clear if Lana was just referencing the fact that anyone would look like the trope next to Lillie and Lusamine or if Mallow is a bit meatier than usual.
  • But Not Too Bi: Granted, she's only Ambiguously Bi as presented in the story, but she still seems to have more interest in women than men: she finds Olivia to be rather hot, shares the same opinion of Kiawe's Mom, and used to date Mina in the past.
  • Cassandra Truth: Averted, luckily. When she reveals to everyone about the Train's existence, they all believe her. In fact, once she's done, she's a little embarrassed that she thought her friends who specialized in interdimensional monsters wouldn't believe her about an interdimensional train.
  • Chef of Iron: She works as a waitress and a cook at her family's restaurant, and she only happens to be one of the Ultra Rangers.
  • Color Motif: She's associated with green; it's the color of her hair and eyes, it's the main color of the Grass types she specializes in, and her Ultra Ranger outfit has green highlights.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Mallow goes to Oranguru's bar to get a drink after seeing Olivia and her brother on a date.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Accidentally ends up doing this when she sees the guys wear the same Sensual Spandex Ultra outfit as the girls.
  • Gayngst: She's Ambiguously Bi in this story, and when she sees Mina, her ex, during the group's trip to Akala Island, she's adamant about downplaying their former relationship in front of everyone. She also gets a dose of heartbreak when she sees Olivia, her crush, on a date with her brother, Ulu.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Played for Laughs, but her attempts to tease Ash about his potential love life leads Acerola to fire back, leaving her a stuttering mess.
  • Green Thumb: She specializes in Grass types.
  • Informed Deformity: Mallow's apparently fat enough for Lana to describe her as chunky when asking Ash if he Has a Type. As Ash points out, she doesn't look any different from the other girls, and given she's being compared to the thin Lillie, it's unclear if she's meatier than usual or if Lana's being a tease.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Once she sees Olivia and Ulu having a date together, she decides to go to Oranguru's stand out of frustration.
  • In Spite of a Nail: She's a former Passenger and kept the Train's existence a secret from everyone else.
  • Insistent Terminology: When Professor Burnet calls The Infinity Train "a Infinity Train", as if to imply there are more, Mallow is quick to correct that no, there's only one, and it's "The Infinity Train".
  • Likes Older Women: The women she seems to crush on tend to be older than her, explicitly in Kiawe's Mom's case, vaguely in Olivia's case.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Not physically, but according to Faba, Mallow's readings show a peculiar aura around her, which is implied to be residue energy from her trip on the Train.
  • Motor Mouth: Devolves into this as she both tries to save face when Acerola teases her, and when she spills the beans about everything she knows about the Infinity Train.
  • Secret-Keeper: She's kept the Infinity Train's existence a secret ever since she went through her trip, but finds herself with no choice but to reveal it when the possibility that Acerola was taken by it appears.
  • Serial Romeo: She has had a lot of dates and crushes, several active at the same time.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Her attempts at trying to convince Acerola and Ash that she's not crushing on Olivia or Kiawe's Mom is.... lackluster. When you are so bad at it that Ash picks up on it, you are really bad at it.
  • Sweet Baker: She's introduced baking Malasadas at her family restaurant for Ash and Acerola, and is in general a very sweet person.
  • The Tease: She tries to tease Ash about potentially having a girlfriend. This ends up backfiring once Acerola comments back, and Lana takes on this role shortly after.

    Lana

Lana

A Water-Type Trainer.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: In trying to use Percussive Maintenance on her TV, she ends up kicking one of the Queens of Alola.
  • Audience Surrogate: More or less serves as this in regards to the Miraculous Ledyba show, asking why the heroes don't just unify both Miraculous and wish the villain away.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Just like Ash, her Ultra Ranger outfit sports blue highlights. She uses this to try tease him, to no avail.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Totally Averted. Lana crushes on Ash like the rest of the Alolan girls, but rather than keep it to herself or backtrack when its implied, Lana teases, flirts, and throws hints at him constantly.
  • Character Exaggeration: While Game!Lana was implied to be cheeky, she was also a Trickster Mentor. This Lana, however, not only takes the teasing bits primarily, but amplifies them, turning her into a Hormone-Addled Teenager.
  • Composite Character: She's primarily based on her anime incarnation, but has some of her game self traits, like her teasing nature.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She has a spare swimsuit to give Acerola in case she wanted to swim with her.
  • Didn't Think This Through: She tries to get Ash to confess if he Has a Type in her usual teasing manner. She keeps going and going even as Ash fails to get the incresingly obvious hints, until she reaches her Rage Breaking Point when she tells him point blank and he still doesn't get it.
  • Eye Twitch: One of her eyes begins twitching as Ash fails to catch on to her hints about his preferences, even as the hints get more obvious.
  • Making a Splash: She specializes in Water types.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: A lot of what she says and does can come off as rather flirty, especially when Ash is involved, but it can also be seen as either a normal thing or her being a tease. This eventually backfires when she tries to learn what Ash's type is, as the hints constantly flying over his head drive her up a wall.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: She somehow managed to find a Water Stone and use it to evolve her Eevee, Sandy, into a Vaporeon.
  • Percussive Maintenance: When her TV begins glitching up, she tries to use this in order to fix it, only to hit something very different...
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Her biggest complaint about Miraculous Ledyba is that the heroes don't just simply unify both Miraculous and wish for the villain to be defeated. Her sisters are quick to make a counterargument.
  • The Tease: She acts quite teasingly towards Ash while she, Ash, and Acerola go for a swim, which the latter notes is very intentional.
  • Wisdom from the Gutter: With her constant flirting and teasing, you wouldn't expect Lana to come up with anything particularly serious, and yet she's the one to propose that the Alolan royal family are the leaders of the ghosts attacking Alola.

    Kiawe

Kiawe

A Fire Type specialist.
  • Composite Character: Primarily based on his Anime self, but he used to work at a Mega Thriftymart like his game self.
  • Jumped at the Call: He's quick to join the Ultra Rangers because he was recently fired from his job at the Mega Thriftymart.
  • Playing with Fire: He's a Fire Type specialist.
  • Red Is Heroic: He's primarily associated with red, and is one of the Ultra Rangers.
  • Taking the Bullet: He pushes Ash out of the way when the Hex Maniac tries to remove his soul, causing Kiawe to become one of her minions.

    Sophocles

Sophocles

An Electric type specialist.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: He's not the most confident guy around. Especially when Ilima basically carries the entire trial he's supposed to lead.
  • Shock and Awe: A Thunder Type specialist.
  • You Are in Command Now: Not explicitly, but he agrees to cover for Acerola's trial while she's missing on the Train.

    Lillie

Lillie

Lusamine's daughter, and another one of Ash's friends.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Not she herself, but her outfit. In canon, its highlights were pink, while in here they're grey.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Among the nicest of her group, and has pale blonde hair.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: While she shares a lot of physical resemblance with Lusamine, their personalities couldn't be more different, with Lusamine being a bundle of energy while Lillie's a lot calmer.
  • Never Gets Fat: It's implied she, like Lusamine, is basically incapable of gaining weight and is quite thin.
  • Nice Girl: A very amicable girl.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Her family's stupidly rich, and while she joined due to losing a bet rather than because she wanted to, she's still a member of the Ultra Rangers.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Lusamine meant well, but telling Lillie 'They [the not-spandex uniforms] will fit me as well as they fit Mother' horrifies Lillie.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: She's the first to notice the Sensual Spandex that the Ultra Rangers' outfits are made of, and she's rather uncomfortable with it.
  • Sore Loser: She apparently accussed Gladion of using a Two-Headed Coin after their coin toss ended in her defeat, according to Gladion.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Lusamine spoils her rotten, but she's a total sweetheart.
  • Sweet Baker: Not to the extent of Mallow, but she's introduced having baked cookies for Ash and friends.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Serves as one "Serious Child" of two compared to her mother, Lusamine.

Aether Foundation

The biggest corporation in all of Alola, and the home of the Montblanc family.

    Gladion

Gladion

Lillie's brother.
  • Aloof Ally: To the Ultra Rangers.
  • Agony of the Feet: Right after saving Mina from tripping, one of her books lands on his feet, causing him to drop her in pain.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Typical Blossomverse lore has him as a former Passenger of the Infinity Train, but it's unclear if the same applies here or not.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Ends up like this to Wicke while acting as Acerola's replacement at the Aether House.
  • The Comically Serious: He's always aloof and serious, which makes for a heavy contrast whenever he finds himself in weird situations, especially when Mina's involved.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: He has a nasty scar under his hair that he claims is from Silvally missing an attack, but everyone can sense that he's hiding something back.
  • Eye Scream: One of his eyes has a pretty bad scratch mark across it.
  • Friend to All Children: It's not prominently featured, but when he mistakes the Hypno working at Aether Foundation for dangerous ones, his first thought is to protect the orphans.
  • Has a Type: If Lillie's to be believed, its girls with multi-colored hair.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Arguably fits this more than Lillie, being an uber serious character compared to his mother.
  • Shipper on Deck: Gives Ash the 'guy nod', which the nicer ghosts take to meaning he approves of Lillie and Ash.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Alongside Lillie, he's the Serious Child to Lusamine's Wacky Parent.

    Lusamine

Lusamine

Leader of the Aether Foundation, and Lillie and Gladion's mother.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parent: She's a kooky otaku woman that's close to her fifties whose idea to combat the supernatural threats of Alola is to Recruit Teenagers with Attitude into a team dubbed the "Ultra Rangers".
  • Ambiguous Innocence: Lusamine has the attitude of a young girl, and her heart is in the right place, but she sees no problem with gathering a group of teenagers and having them defend Alola against ghosts, or creating a vacuum to suck up and imprison said ghosts.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She's in her fifties, acts like an energetic high school girl, and she's an intense otaku with a preference for sentai. She also happens to be the leader of the biggest corporation in Alola, the richest person in Alola as well, is smart enough to construct a vaccuum capable of sucking up ghosts, invents a Pokeball capable of catching Ghosts within a day, and minored in history.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She's an energetic woman who's a Cosplay Otaku Girl and has the attitude of a teenager. She also happens to be the head of the biggest corporation of Alola, managed to create a functional device capable of sucking up ghosts, invents a Pokeball capable of catching Ghosts within a day, and minored in history, with a focus on Alolan history.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She created a vacuum capable of sucking up ghosts just in case she ever needed it. Guess what she ends up using when Gladiolus attacks Aether Foundation?
  • Drama Queen: She pulls off quite the dramatic speech when trying to convince Acerola to join the Ultra Rangers.
  • Fiction 500: She has enough money to pay for all the expenses of Kukui and Burnet's vacation at the Hano Grand Resort, let alone pretty much any of the other things she invents or purchases.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Has enough know how on technology to create a vacuum that can suck up ghosts.
  • Genki Girl: Despite being in her fifties, Lusamine has as much energy as a highschool girl on a sugar rush.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: She's the single mother of Lillie and Gladion, who happens to not only be the head of the biggest corporation in Alola, but knows how to make gadgets to capture ghosts of all things.
  • Happy Dance: Does one of these after Acerola says she'll consider joining the Ultra Rangers; she first dances with Wicke before moving onto Ash.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blonde hair the same shade as her daughter, and while she's definitely a weirdo, she's got her heart in the right place.
  • Incoming Ham: She marches into the briefing room alongside Wicke, before loudly greeting Ash's group.
  • Kick Chick: Gives the tube Gladiolus is kept in a good kick to convince the king to cut to the chase regarding what he knows about Acerola going missing.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: Dons one of these while explaining to the Ultra Rangers about the foreign "infinity energy" entering Alola.
  • Manchild: She's practically in her fifties, but has the personality and energy of a teenager, which embarrasses Lillie and Gladion to no end.
  • Never Gets Fat: Lusamine can drink chocolate syrup bottles and not gain any weight.
  • Otaku: Again, she's a tokusatsu otaku, though she's a fan of other series as well.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: She comes to the conclusion that Acerola was whisked away to another location, which is true, but she thinks it's the result of Teleport being used rather than her hopping onto the Infinity Train.
  • Shout-Out: Tying into the Power Rangers references, but her insistence that the outfits are not spandex is referencing Doctor K.
  • Spectacular Spinning: She spins to the side opposite to Wicke while explaining everybody about the Infinity Energy entering Alola.
  • The Team Benefactor: She serves this for the Ultra Rangers, being both the one who came up with the idea alongside Wicke and also funds the things they use.
  • Uncle Pennybags: More like Great-Aunt Pennybags, but she's a kooky, energetic woman with a heart of gold who happens to be essentially the richest person in Alola.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: The Wacky Parent to both her children's Serious Child.
  • Wealthy Philanthropist: She's ridiculously wealthy, and she uses most of that wealth on things that help keep Alola safe, like the Ultra Rangers.

    Wicke and Faba
Lusamine's assistants.

Both

  • Beleaguered Assistant: Not that Lusamine's a terrible boss or anything, but she's so energetic and childish that Wicke and Faba seem like her babysitters at times, rather than her workers.
  • Contrasting Replacement Character: To Chryssa and Renji. Wicke and Faba are more involved in the search for Acerola, and some focus is put on them rather than keeping them in the background.
  • Fat and Skinny: Wicke and Faba, respectively.
  • Mr. Exposition: They both serve to help explain what's going on in Alola.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: They're at least smart enough to keep up with Lusamine, and they both wear glasses.
  • Those Two Guys: They're often seen together.

Wicke

  • Bad Liar: By her own admission, though she does a decent job when she needs to lie to Nanu.
  • Friend to All Children: She watches over the Aether House and the orphans, though without either Acerola or Gladion's help, she struggles a bit.
  • Gamer Girl: Mentions having played Dragonair Age: Inquisition to Gladion.
  • Nice Girl: Kind and amicable the whole way through.

Faba

  • Nerves of Steel: Remains calm even as the ghost of Gladiolus haunts the Aether Foundation.

    Aether House Hypnos
A group of Hypnos that work for the Aether House, helping the orphans with bad dreams go to sleep.

Pokémon

    Pikachu

Pikachu

Ash's Pikachu.

    Tsareena

Tsareena

Mallow's Tsareena.
  • Kick Chick: Gives a good kick to the ghost haunting Mallow's family restaurant.

    Ride Pokémon
The Ultra Rangers' Ride Pokémon, which they use to travel across the islands.

    Snowy

Snowy

An Alolan Vulpix that belongs to Lillie.
  • An Ice Person: Ice Type.
  • Gender Lift: His gender was never made clear in the anime, and the games retroactively confirms Snowy's female, but this story turns him male.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Lillie's been training with him lately in order to get him ready for when he accompanies her on any mission, and when we see him fight, he ends up fighting Sandy, who's now a Vaporeon, to a standstill.

    Sandy
A Vaporeon, originally an Eevee, that arrived in Alola and was befriended by Lana.
  • Adaptational Badass: Sandy never evolved in canon, nor did he get a lot of mileage out of fights. In here, not only does he evolve into Vaporeon, but he manages to fight Snowy to a standstill.
  • Gender Lift: Just like Snowy, Sandy's gender was never made clear in canon, while he's a boy here.
  • Making a Splash: Water type as a Vaporeon.
  • Non-Elemental: Was a Normal type as an Eevee.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He evolved into Vaporeon offscreen.

Trial Captains

    Mina
The rather... odd Trial Captain of Poni Island.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • She and Mallow are Just Friends in canon, while in here, they're ex-girlfriends.
    • She and Ash didn't see each other that much in canon, while in here it's implied they've met before.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Mina doesn't seem to go any way in canon, while in here she's known to have dated Mallow in the past.
  • Amicable Exes: She and Mallow used to date, but separated by the time the story starts. Mina's still friendly with her regardless, and unlike Mallow, she doesn't hide or downplay it.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Her interactions with Ash and Gladion are purely platonic, while she casully, even happily, reveals she and Mallow used to date.
  • Artists Are Attractive: Downplayed, in that Gladion thinks she looks average compared to the average Alolan woman, but given said women are Hotter and Sexier in this version, this still leaves her being pretty easy on the eyes.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She's briefly mentioned to have tutored Acerola with her drawing during the Passage Fair before she appears in the next chapter.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: She casually sits next to Gladion while he dusts a bookshelf, randomly decides to try practicing her "princess walk" shortly after, and after tripping and hitting the floor she then tries to take Gladion's measurements in order to make a costume for him.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: When Mina asks Mallow what happened to the painting she made for her restaurant, the only thing Mallow can say is that it's still there. This is still enough to bring a smile to her face.
  • Eccentric Artist: She's an artist who helps the orphans learn how to draw, among other things, and she's a little bit strange herself.
  • Friend to All Children: She volunteers at the Aether House to teach the orphans how to draw, write, and read.
  • Innocently Insensitive: She fails to realize how her words are hurting Mallow when she congratulates Olivia and Ulu on their date and wishes them luck with it.
  • Mellow Fellow: Mina's always calm and generally easygoing. In fact, her getting angry that Ash doesn't remember her is noted to be a shock to the team.
  • Nice Girl: Mina might live in her own little world, but she's a very amicable person as long as you're patient with her.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Not that she realizes it, but she says she can help Ash discover his measurements when Lana brings it up.
  • When She Smiles: Not that she never smiles or is serious all the time, that's Gladion's thing, but Mina's usually seen with a spacy, neutral expression. Mallow telling her that the painting she made for her restaurant is still there causes her to beam with joy.
  • Won't Take "Yes" for an Answer: Inverted. Mina tries to haggle for Gladion's measurements by saying she'll give him her measurements in return. Gladion blatantly refuses... And Mina tells him anyway, with Gladion having to clarify he said no for her to stop.

    Ilima
The Trial Captain of Melemele Island.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Ash mentions him in the first chapter, and makes a quick cameo in Chapter 5.
  • Friend to All Children: Ash mentions having gone help him with the kids at his school.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: He decides to join Sophocles while he's running Acerola's trial, but he ends up carrying it instead: instructing the newcomers what to do, explaining the rules and what needs to be done, etc.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Has pink hair, and he's a fairly nice guy.

Trial Challengers

    Hau
Hala's grandson, who's introduced tackling Acerola's trial.

    Sun and Moon
Hau's friends, who accompany him to Acerola's trial.
Both
  • Demoted to Extra: They're the player characters of the Sun and Moon games, but since this story mostly takes place in the anime, they're minor characters here.
Sun
  • The Paranoiac: He's slightly concerned about taking Acerola's trial due to having heard some... Rumors about the Trial Captain herself.
Moon
  • Camera Fiend: She carries a camera with her, and she decides to take pictures while undergoing Acerola's trial. This actually ends up helping the group survive when her camera flash stuns the Totem Hypno long enough for them to go into hiding.

Kahunas

    Nanu

Nanu

Acerola's caretaker, and the Kahuna of Ula'Ula Island.
  • The Caretaker: Serves as this to Acerola, as he was the one who adopted her once she was taken away from her father's hand.
  • Friends Are Chosen, Family Aren't: Acerola considers him as her "Grunkle" despite the two not being related.
  • Parental Substitute: Serves as this to Acerola, serving as her caretaker while her parents are out of the picture.
  • Seen It All: He's seen some pretty messed up stuff in his line of work, to the point he's used to Acerola yelling at her ancestors.
  • Written-In Absence: He's written out of the story by having him go abroad to deal with an incident involving "Infinity Energy" and a woman named Debbie.

    Olivia
The Kahuna of Akala Island.

Other

    The Ancestors

Acerola's Ancestors

The previous kings and queens of Alola back when the monarchy was still around, and Acerola's ancestors.
  • Appeal to Tradition: They're the most vehement about whether certain things are worthy of being considered acceptable by Alolan standards or not.
  • Authority in Name Only: They're the previous kings and queens of Alola, but monarchy in the Region has been abolished for a long time, leaving them as nagging phantoms longing for the days of old.
  • Berserk Button: Depending on the ancestor, it could be foreigners or gambling.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: One of them had an Interspecies Romance with a Primarina, and even the other ghosts see him with disgust.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Played for laughs and drama, since they're from very different times and their expectations put Acerola under a lot of pressure.
  • Electromagnetic Ghosts: Seem to have become this after absorbing infinity energy: one of the queens messes up Lana's TV just by being near it, and Gladiolus makes a brief blackout at Aether Foundation for his Big Entrance.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The very beginning of the story has them try to bother Acerola while she's getting ready for the day, not only showing how they have No Sense of Personal Space, and just how intrusive they really are.
  • Everyone Has Standards: They're as Royally Screwed Up as you'd expect from a ruthless royal family, but even they find the idea of Human and Pokemon romance to be just too far, with the one King shown to engage in it also being shown in a negative light by the other royals.
  • Fantastic Racism: One of them has...issues with non-Alolans. Extending to their food being made in an Alolan kitchen.
  • Females Are More Innocent: Downplayed. While just as pushy as their husbands, the queens aren't nearly as malicious, with a few even being friendly.
  • King Bob the Nth: How the queens are named, given they all share Acerola's name.
  • Legacy Character: If we take the queens' names into consideration, then "Acerola" appears to be a name passed on from queen to queen, with our Acerola being the 13th.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: They first appear bugging Acerola about politics before she's even had the time to shower, and they've been at it for years.
  • Original Character: While the Alolan royal family is confirmed to exist in canon, the characters featured in this story are made from wholecloth.
  • Older Than They Look: The queens, by virtue of sharing the same petite body frame as Acerola despite being even older.
  • Racist Grandpa: They're the ancestors of Acerola, and most of them-primarily the kings-are really racist towards foreigners.
  • Shipper on Deck: One of them very much approves of Ash and Acerola getting together.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: The rest, meanwhile, are only interested in Ash and Acerola becoming an item in order to continue the royal lineage. This gets further reinforced when, during a talk with Ash about the topic, Professor Burnet states that the Alolan royal family seeks to use him.
  • Sketchy Successor: Apparently the royal line has more than a few rough patches.

    Acerola's father

??? Pualani

A member of the Alolan royal family, and the father of Acerola.
  • Abusive Parents: He was a relentless gambler who effectively lost all his money in his addiction, leaving him and his only daughter in poverty.
  • Ambiguous Situation: He's nowhere to be found in the present day, but whether he's not around or is outright dead is unclear. Acerola believes its the latter, but it's just a guess.
  • Bumbling Dad: Played for Drama. He was a hopeless gambler who effectively threw himself and his daughter into poverty because he couldn't hold himself back.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Whether this trope applies or not, it's subverted, since he was a gambler who lost all his money on gambling, sending him and his daughter straight into poverty.
  • Entitled Bastard: According to Acerola, he was raised to believe he was entitled to certain things as a member of the Alolan royal family. This did nothing to earn him people's approval, which coupled with his gambling addiction, lead to Acerola being taken away from him.
  • The Gambling Addict: A pretty bad case, since it lead to his and his daughter's poverty.
  • Uncertain Doom: Assuming he did die, how he died is unknown.
  • Unnamed Parent: His name hasn't been said so far.
