Resurrección
Thousand-Year Blood War appearance
"They're all cowards, every damn one of them. Whatever. I'll just consume them. As they become my flesh and blood, they will see beyond. I... I am the king!"
Species: Menos / Arrancar (Adjuchas / Vasto Lorde)
Zanpakuto: Pantera
Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe (JP), David Vincent (EN), Edson Matus (Latin-American Spanish)

Arrancar 12 and the sixth Espada. He views himself as a king and is angered when he feels that anyone is failing to give him the respect he deserves. Despite his violence and instability, he does have a personal code of honor and fair play. He is despised by Tosen for his disrespect and vicious behavior. He defines the death aspect of 'Destruction'. His number tattoo is on the right side of his back, and his Hollow hole is in his abdomen.

His Zanpakuto is Pantera, which transforms him into a cat-man hybrid that is capable of extreme speed. He can also create giant energy claws and howl loudly enough to cause shock waves.

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Bleach: Cannot Fear Your Own World reveals that he gained some resistance to poison after surviving his fight with Askin, who had the ability to make everything poisonous by lowering the lethal dose. While fighting a zombified Luppi, Grimmjow finds himself briefly poisoned and paralyzed by the chemicals Mayuri left inside Luppi's body, only to overcome the paralysis moments later, something that surprises both Mayuri and Grimmjow himself.
  • Amazon Chaser: He constantly argues with Nelliel when she disciplines him when he acts his usual reckless self either with her words or violence. Surprisingly, not only does Grimmjow show amazing tolerance towards her behavior, but he seems to like the fact that, unlike Harribel who would rather not antagonize Grimmjow, Nelliel actually has the guts to stand up to him despite his vast improvement in becoming a Vasto Lorde Arrancar like her.
  • Animal Motifs: As an Adjuchas he strongly resembled a panther, and his Resurrección, Pantera, gives him a number of feline traits. It's befitting of his wild, vicious nature.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Tōsen cuts off his left arm as punishment for insubordination, making sure to burn it to ashes afterwards. The injury was considered debilitating enough to strip him of his rank, something Yammy had the fortune to avoid because his arm was left intact after Ichigo cut it off. After Orihime is kidnapped, she is ordered to display her power by restoring it.
  • Anti-Hero: He may have agreed to work with the heroes but it's not for heroic reasons. Grimmjow does ally with Ichigo's group for the final battle, but solely to get a rematch with Ichigo in Hueco Mundo. However, while still violent and merciless towards his enemies, he still follows a code of honor and fights to ensure the safety of Hueco Mundo. Unlike Nelliel who genuinely considers Ichigo and his friends as allies, Grimmjow considers them as enemies due to their rivalry.
  • Ax-Crazy: Grimmjow is a proud Blood Knight who is obsessed with combat, and the aspect of death he embodies is Destruction. He leads his Fracciónes into the Human World to kill every person with Reiatsu no matter how little. When he fights Ichigo for the first time, he beats him to a pulp all whilst laughing maniacally. When he regains his arm and Espada status, the first thing he does is stab his arm through his temporary replacement Luppi's chest, and blasting his upper body away with a Cero, all with a Slasher Smile on his face. When Ichigo is almost killed by Ulquiorra, Grimmjow rescues Orihime from Loly and Menoly, savagely mauling the two while doing so, just to use her to heal Ichigo so he can have his death match with him. Even when fighting alongside the Soul Reapers against the Vandenreich, he claims he is only doing so to have another shot at fighting Ichigo to the death in Hueco Mundo.
  • Badass Boast: When Ichigo asks him what happened to Grimmjow's left arm, instead of telling him the truth (Tosen destroyed it as punishment), he responds with this: "I tore [my left arm] off. I don't need two arms to kick your ass."
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Like Ulquiorra, Grimmjow generally forgoes using his sword in favor of pummeling his opponents with punches and kicks. Upon releasing his Zanpakuto, he lacks any form of weapon beyond the blades protruding from his forearms and calves and relies primarily on pure hand-to-hand combat.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: His Resurrección gives him two curved blades that jut out from his forearms, just below his elbows.
  • Blatant Lies: After Grimmjow defies Aizen's orders and confronts Ichigo in the human world, Tosen drags him back to Hueco Mundo. As punishment, Aizen permits Tosen to destroy Grimmjow's arm. When Ichigo asks Grimmjow what happened to his arm during their second encounter, Grimmjow retorts that he cut it off himself because he doesn't need two arms to beat Ichigo. Ichigo doesn't seem fooled by that answer but goes along with it.
  • Blood Knight: Grimmjow fully admits that he loves to battle, seeing it more as something Hollows have to do. However, he'll only attack opponents who can battle and saved Orihime while also mauling the two Arrancars attacking her explicitly so that he could have a fair fight with Ichigo. Nnoitra, on the other hand, will simply kill anyone he feels is close enough to him in power whether they can fight back or not. When he reappears in the final arc, he is technically on Ichigo's side, but he makes it perfectly clear that he is only helping him to have another opportunity to get his death match with Ichigo in Hueco Mundo, which won't be able to happen if the Vandenreich wins.
  • Cats Are Mean: He was originally a panther-like Adjuchas and is also one of the most violent characters in the series.
  • Character Tics: Grimmjow tends to flex his fingers as if they were claws when particularly excited or riled.
  • Character Development: His return in the final arc shows he's mellowed out somewhat from his loss to Ichigo and seemingly took it to heart about being a king. While still the same ruthless self, he's calmer and more willing to compromise with others and work alongside Ichigo and his friends against a much greater threat and surprisingly more civil around Nelliel upon her return to her adult form, something his old self would have never done.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Anything is game for this guy in a fight. For example, after Rukia froze him with Sode no Shirayuki, he broke free of the ice. The first thing he does is to grab her head and charge up a Cero, attempting to blow Rukia's head up point-blank to make sure she couldn't retaliate. He also didn't hesitate to cut in half Quilge and rip out Askin's heart while their backs were turned.
  • The Comically Serious: He is capable of being this on some level especially upon his return in the final arc, getting into a childish argument with Nelliel at times and snapping in a funny manner when Ichigo made fun of him for letting Askin get away. More notable is his deadpan look when Askin asks him who Ichigo is to him that Grimmjow just gives a shocking, yet funny, face fault and flat-out says he considers Ichigo his "sworn enemy".
  • Curtains Match the Window: Both his eyes and hair are light blue.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Develops a vendetta against Ichigo. Why? Ichigo wounded him bad enough to leave a scar while fighting back after Grimmjow beat the holy living hell out of Ichigo. Oh, and Ichigo's self-confidence irritates him.
  • Delinquent Hair: A stylized, messier version. Askin refers to him as the maniac with the regent haircut.
  • Does Not Know Howto Say Thanks: Because of his pride and odd form of honor, Grimmjow never actually says thanks to anyone for anything, but rather shows it through actions. As When Orihime healed his arm, he personally saved her from Loly and Menoly as his way to say thanks. In the final arc, despite claiming he's only helping Ichigo to get a rematch with him, it's strongly implied it's really because, despite his rivalry with him, Grimmjow wants to repay him for saving his life from Nnoitra years ago and agreed to help stop Yhwach from destroying everything as a way to thank him in his own way.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: When Ichigo asks why he came to their second fight missing an arm, he simply claims that he cut it off himself (it was actually Tosen) and can easily defeat Ichigo with the handicap. Whether he believed it or not, Ichigo at least gets the message not to hold back. Then, before their final fight, he had Orihime heal the damage Ichigo took from Ulquiorra but turns down Ichigo’s request to get his own injury healed from blocking Ulquiorra’s Cero. He only accepts it after Ichigo mockingly suggests that he’ll use the injury as an excuse for losing.
  • Energy Weapon: His ultimate attack, Desgarrón, produces ten gigantic claws made of spirit energy that he can launch at his enemies with absolutely devastating force.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Downplayed. He showed little concern over the deaths of his Fracciónes (which was primarily his fault to begin with). Despite this, the end of his final fight with Ichigo has a flashback that shows he actually took their words to heart about him being destined to be king and did care for them more than he thought. When Nelliel and Harribel take charge of Hueco Mundo, Grimmjow is content with their rule, respecting their strength as Espada, and will help them when the situation calls for it. In "Can't Fear Your Own World" novel, Grimmjow subconsciously calls upon the faith his Fracción placed on him when Ikomikidomoe and Hikone declare to rule Hueco Mundo one day, the latter whom Grimmjow chases down for this reason.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While he may be a savage Blood Knight, Grimmjow does follow his own code of honor. If he feels he is in debt to someone, he will go out of his way to repay it; he rescues Orihime, who had healed his arm prior, from Loly and Menoly who had been torturing her as a way to thank her. He's also clearly disgusted with the two Arrancar girls for beating Orihime up when she had done nothing to deserve it. He's also a firm believer in a fair fight, having Orihime heal Ichigo's wounds so they can duel on equal terms.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Ichigo. They're both reckless, irreverent, honorable and stubborn Blood Knights that have no scruples over how to win a fight, but whereas Ichigo is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, Grimmjow is a sadistic murderer who cares only about getting stronger, payback, and pride. Furthermore, Ichigo fights to protect his allies, while Grimmjow kills his allies if they steal his rank. A major moment of symbolism occurs when you compare their species - Ichigo is a Visored, a Soul Reaper with Hollow powers; Grimmjow is an Arrancar, a Hollow with Soul Reaper powers. Taking it a step further is their differences in color. Ichigo has orange hair and wears black, while Grimmjow has blue hair and wears white.
  • Evil Is Petty: He utterly thrashed Ichigo during their first fight, gleefully beating him to a bloody pulp the entire time, with Ichigo only managing to induce a single burn on his chest with what was honestly a lucky shot. Yet Grimmjow has the sheer gall to say he got humiliated that day.
  • Facial Markings: Has light blue lines below his eyes, similar to the eye markings on the Panthera genus of cats.
  • Fangs Are Evil: His Hollow mask remnants take the form of half of a fanged jaw attached to the side of his face. Grimmjow's actual canines grow considerably in his released state, adding to his more feral appearance.
  • Fatal Flaw: His obsession with Ichigo. Ever since their first fight which was interrupted by Tosen, he has been obsessed with finishing his duel with Ichigo and wishes to crush him, but only at full strength on equal terms. Even after he finally gets an uninterrupted duel in Hueco Mundo, Grimmjow is unable to let it go. To that end he agrees to ally with Ichigo and his friends but solely to ensure a rematch. This single-minded trait has also caused him a humiliating defeat at the hands of Askin Nakk Le Varr that, had Urahara not healed him, he would have died.
  • Friendly Enemy: Well as "friendly" as someone as violent as Grimmjow can be. His single-minded goal in life is to tear Ichigo into pieces. But alas, he can't do that when there's bad guys left and right causing all sorts of trouble and mayhem for Ichigo and his friends. As a result, he makes it a point to be an ally to Ichigo and protect those close to him, at least until the dust settles. He also was genuinely disgusted that Loly and Menoly's abuse Orihime, who is a non-combatant and hadn't even done anything to deserve it, dealing out violent retribution to them both before demanding Orihime fix her injuries before he took her to heal Ichigo. There's also the fact that he's extremely sporting about his potential rematch, making sure Ichigo is fully healed and at full strength before they fight. For the most part, Ichigo reciprocates this weird relationship. When he returns in the final arc, he becomes a tentative ally during the fight against Yhwach and does work along them against the Quincies.
  • Gale-Force Sound: Upon entering his Resurrección, the first thing he does is let out a roar that produces gale-force winds and staggers Ichigo from dozens of meters away.
  • Great White Feline: Grimmjow is one of the Espada, the most powerful of the Arrancar. Before he became an Arrancar, he was a white, panther-like Adjuchas-class Menos and his One-Winged Angel form is a white, feline-esque appearance. While not a hero, Grimmjow is one of the more honorable villains in the series when it comes to battle and even aids the heroes in the final arc so he can have a rematch with Ichigo, his main rival.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: While he does ally with Ichigo and his friends for the final battle, he still considers each other as enemies given their rivalry, but is a vital ally in the fight with the Quincies, arguably ending up as the Arrancar who caused the most damage against the Vandereich.
  • Hidden Depths: A very small, but important detail in his speech to Ichigo before their fated battle serves as an early hint to how he feels about his Fracciónes deep down, citing it as a reason to tear Ichigo to pieces.
Grimmjow: "I hurt your friends! You know you want to rip me apart! I would if I were you."
  • Hunk: Easily stands out as one of the most handsome characters, with a handsome face and the muscular figure to boot with a lot of female fans fawning over him.
  • Idiot Ball: While he's chasing Askin in the final arc, the Sternritter suddenly throws a Gift Ball at him. Rather than avoid the attack entirely, he chooses to swipe at it with his arm, getting poisoned and put out of action for quite some time. Askin compares this to a child not learning to be cautious of gifts from strangers.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: His vendetta against Ichigo stems from reasons that imply that Grimmjow has deep insecurity issues. No matter how many times he beats Ichigo down, Ichigo never gives up his confidence that he can win. Grimmjow sees this as an insult to his power and is determined to prove his might by killing Ichigo at full strength.
  • It's Personal: Grimmjow holds a grudge against Ichigo, because he can't stand his unyielding confidence, seeing it as an insult to his strength. To that end, he deliberately leaves the scar on his chest as a reminder of their first encounter and, since his lost towards Ichigo, makes it his goal to get a rematch against him.
  • I Work Alone: He's not a good team player. Even after agreeing to work alongside Ichigo and his friends Grimmjow tries to go off on his own and gets his ass kicked by Askin because of how much he underestimated him. By the Novel series implies he learned from his mistakes, he still went off on his own to find Hikone but when fighting Ikomikidomoe, he's capable of working in flawless teamwork with Nel and Harribel.
  • Jerkass: Grimmjow is rude, violent, apathetic and a proud Blood Knight who loves to fight and tends to sport a Slasher Smile. He's also one of the few Espadas who has no respect for Aizen and his cohorts and he's not afraid to show it (which tends to bite back in his ass). In his first fight with Ichigo, he stabs Rukia in the gut and treats Ichigo as a human punching bag, laughing sadistically. While he saves Orihime from Loly and Menoly, he only does it so that she can heal Ichigo who has been mortally wounded by Ulquiorra, so that he can have his death match with him. When she refuses, Grimmjow threatens her, and even shows willingness to kick Nel when she is in her child form. His only saving grace is that for all his flaws he has standards and is a genuinely honorable fighter. It's somewhat downplayed upon his return in the Blood War, as he's mellowed out and more mature, willing to work together with Ichigo and his friends and have a number of Pet the Dog moments.
  • Kick the Dog: He has a pretty long laundry list of villainous moments. It starts with beating Ichigo's face to a pulp in their first fight; stabbing Rukia in her gut and throwing her to the ground; using his Gran Ray Cero at Orhime and Nel, just to forced Ichigo to use his Hollow mask; literally kicking Ichigo's corpse so he could see the hole made by Ulquiorra; and choking Orihime when she refuses to prop Ichigo up for another fight.
  • Klingon Promotion: He quickly regains his lost rank as the Sexta Espada by killing Luppi, the current Sexta. The novel Can't Fear Your Own World reveals that Aizen promoted Luppi so that he and Grimmjow would fight for the rank of the sixth Espada with the corpse of the loser being used for Szayelaporro's research.
  • Know Whento Fold Them: After losing his arm to Tosen, Grimmjow wanted to kill him right there, but Aizen points out if he attacks him, he won't have a reason to dismiss him. Seeing himself in a lose-lose situation and he's no match in this situation, Grimmjow wisely retreats.
  • Lack of Empathy: While he is not without a code of honor, for the most part, Grimmjow doesn't have much regard for other people. The only time he shows even the slightest concern is in regard to his Fracciónes, all of whom were killed under his watch. Even then, he didn't really care; it was more surprise that they lost than anything else. Another case comes in how he wanted Orihime to revive Ichigo just so he could kill him anyway. There's also his obsession towards fighting Ichigo again, trying to start a fight with him the moment he meets him again during the final arc, not even caring about the fate of the world in favor of his potential rematch.
  • Laughing Mad: When he butchers Luppi and gets his rank back, he indulges in sinister laugh.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • He leads his Fracciónes to the World of Living, and in the process, all of them die, Grimmjow is left with a scar from Ichigo, and worse he loses his left arm and Espada ranking.
    • He loses his final fight with Ichigo and acts like a total Sore Loser from his loss, distracting him long enough to let Nnoitra incapacitate him.
  • Last-Name Basis: When not on Full-Name Basis, he would refer to Ichigo as "Kurosaki".
  • Left for Dead: Nobody seemed to care to check up on him. Although Ichigo was preoccupied with Nnoitra, Nelliel, Kenpachi, Aizen unveiling his plan before leaving to Karakura, and Starrk taking Orihime to notice much else.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Since Nelliel returned to her old self all she and Grimmjow do is bicker at each other, sometimes with Nel even using violence to discipline Grimmjow for trying to pick fights. Unlike Harribel who rarely irritates him, Grimmjow tends to get into childish arguments with her about the right choice of actions. That being said it's implied Grimmjow is impressed with her and likes that she has the guts to stand up to him compared to most Arrancars.
  • Little Bit Beastly: His released form gives him cat ears, a tail, long hair, changes his hands and feet into paws and his nails into claws, but he retains his human-looking face.
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: While most Hollows eat their kin in order to get stronger and progress to the next stage of their evolution, this behavior tends to stop once their masks break, and they become Arrancar. With the risk of regressing to a lower stage gone, most Arrancar have no need to devour other Hollows. Grimmjow is one of the few Arrancar who did not stop their cannibalistic behavior. The post-war novel explicitly states that following his defeat at Ichigo's hands, Grimmjow ate countless Hollows and Arrancar so that he would become stronger, eventually becoming a Vasto Lorde powerful enough to give even former Tres Espada Tier Harribel and Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck pause.
  • Motive Decay: Initially, Grimmjow wanted to be the King of Hueco Mundo and joined Aizen for the purpose of growing stronger. When he first fights Ichigo he is only there to eliminate a threat to what he considers his future kingdom, but as the series goes on and Ichigo grows more powerful, Grimmjow becomes obsessed with beating him to the point where he only cares about saving Hueco Mundo from Yhwach because it's where he wants to kill Ichigo.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Aside from having a very handsome face, cool hair and a deep, sexy voice, Grimmjow's choice of apparel includes a small bolero jacket with no shirt underneath, which shows off his impressive abdominals at all times. His entire jacket gets shredded off in his second fight in Karakura town, apparently just to show off how ripped he is.
  • Neck Lift: Grimmjow does this to Orihime twice. First after he rescues her from death at the hands of Loly and Menoly. Later, during his and Ichigo's fight as she questions him.
  • Noble Demon: He is certainly ruthless in battle and has no qualms over killing those weaker than he is (it's a dog-eat-dog world in Hueco Mundo after all). But his sense of honor shows in his desire to only fight opponents at their best, going so far as to bring Orihime to heal his rival Ichigo so that their fight would be a fair one, even if he has to trap a fellow Espada to do it. He shows disgust at Loly and Menoly for assaulting Orihime for no real reason and tells Orihime to heal her wounds first before they head out to heal Ichigo. In the final arc, for all his faults, he agreed to work alongside Ichigo and his friends due to threat of Yhwach despite his obsession of fighting Ichigo again.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: His first fight with Ichigo is too one-sided to be anything else, with Grimmjow brutally pummeling him with only his fists. During their second fight, he once again lays a similar vicious beatdown on Ichigo after his Hollow mask breaks.
  • No Range Like Point-Blank Range: At the end of his second fight with Ichigo, he pins the latter's arms to the ground so he can prepare a Cero right in front of Ichigo's face, promising him that the close range will prevent him from feeling any pain as his head is vaporized. Ichigo is saved by Rukia, who Grimmjow then attempts to do the same thing to while outright grabbing her head, but she is saved by Shinji. Luppi and Menoly can attest to what happens if he's uninterrupted.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: He tells Ichigo that the only reason he's helping everyone oppose Yhwach is because of the threat of destruction to Hueco Mundo; if it's destroyed, he doesn't know where else to kill Ichigo.
  • Oh, Crap!: Is utterly dumbfounded that Askin, after having his heart ripped out and crushed, he still won't die or stop talking. He has it again after Askin traps him and Urahara with his Gift Ball Deluxe to kill them both with him.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Towards Ichigo, to the point of taking Orihime out of her cell to heal him after he is nearly killed by Ulquiorra, which Grimmjow himself insisted that he should have done earlier. This is also his reason for allying with the Soul Reapers against Yhwach and the Vandenreich, since if Hueco Mundo is destroyed then he won't have an arena to kill Ichigo in.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Grimmjow's aspect of death is "Destruction", in large part because his bloodlust and his desire for destruction was what turned him into a Hollow when he was still a Plus and is the only thing that can satiate the emptiness in his heart that all Hollows have. He only lives to cause wanton destruction and will stop at nothing to satisfy his desires. In Can't Fear Your Own World, when Tokinada Tsunayashiro reveals his plan to reveal the existence of Soul Society to the real world, so that society will collapse into chaos and anarchy, Grimmjow is the only one not appalled by Tokinada (even Luppi, who has the same aspect of death, was disgusted by Tokinada). For Grimmjow, this would only give him the opportunity to cause more destruction. He admits that he would have joined Tokinada and his world if they didn't already happen to be enemies on opposite sides.
  • Panthera Awesome: His form during his Adjuchas days was that of a white panther instead of a normal black panther. Also, his Zanpakuto is named Pantera, Spanish for "Panther"; it doesn't take a genius to guess what his released form looks like.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: His aspect of death is Destruction and every fight he's in, the surroundings get completely trashed. Shinji even lampshades it.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • He personally goes out of his way to save Orihime from being abused by Loly and Menoly as his way of thanking her for restoring his left arm and shows disgust towards the duo's spiteful abuse of her. He was considerate of her wounds and insisted she heal her own injuries before he took her to revive Ichigo.
    • In the novel Can't Fear Your Own World, Grimmjow does assist Nelliel in rescuing Harribel from prison.
    • When questioned by Liltotto if Nelliel is Ichigo's girlfriend and Grimmjow says she isn't and goes on to give a surprisingly supportive comment about Ichigo and Orihime being a couple stating he considers Orihime his ideal partner.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: His Pantera form makes his hair grow so long that it reaches his legs.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When Ichigo and his friends invaded Hueco Mundo, Aizen held a meeting with the Espada and showed Ichigo, Ishida and Chad heading for Las Noches, Grimmjow wanted to kill them straight away, stating that you eliminate vermin before it has a chance to fight back. Later, he needed Orihime to revive Ichigo for another fight, so he brought her along to make sure of it. Similarly, en route to Ichigo's location, he had Orihime Bound and Gagged with a large piece of cloth covering her, presumably so she wouldn't be detected by the other Arrancar and seemingly took the time to cover her wrists with a piece of cloth under the chains.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Once Orihime heals his arm, just before he obliterated Luppi with a Cero:
    Luppi: Grimmjow...You Bastard!
Grimmjow: Damn right. See you later...[charges up a Cero] former Number Six.
  • Properly Paranoid: He never respected Aizen and only kept up the appearance for the sake of it due to not trusting him believing he would never care for any of the Arrancars serving him. His suspicions pay off during the Battle in the Fake Karakura Town when Aizen cuts down Harribel without hesitation claiming the Espada who serve him should have known than to have trusted him.
  • Psycho for Hire: Grimmjow is an Ax-Crazy psychopath who only cares about fighting and bloodshed, and only works for Aizen to fulfill his urges. Unlike most of the Espada, he basically only worked with Aizen to get stronger and has no qualms killing or attacking other Arrancars. He's also the only Espada, other than Barragan, who has no real loyalty to Aizen, and openly disobeys several of his orders.
  • The Rival: He is Ichigo's most recurring antagonist during the Arrancar Saga. Initially just wanting to finish off Ichigo as quickly as possible, he develops a strong hatred that borders on becoming an obsession with personally defeating him after getting scarred; even going out of his way to have Orihime revive him after Ulquiorra nearly kills him like Grimmjow had chastised him for not doing earlier. He ultimately gets Ichigo to admit that he came to Hueco Mundo to settle the score as well. He returns during The Thousand Year Blood War to aid Ichigo and the others in their attempt to defeat the ultimate enemy Yhwach, if only to guarantee a rematch with Ichigo.
  • Scars Are Forever: He carries two scars on his chest. The vertical scar running down his torso is a memento of his first fight with Ichigo while the curved scar following his collarbone is the consequence of Nnoitra's ambush attack after he loses his final fight with Ichigo.
  • Sherlock Scan: Grimmjow may be a violent thug, but he's far from stupid. He figured out how Ichigo's Visored powers worked despite having never seen one before during their second fight, commenting that Ichigo began breathing heavily the moment that his mask shattered, which means that unlike a Hollow, he lost strength from it and when Ichigo uses the same pose to try and summon his mask again, Grimmjow determines that his Visored powers have both a time limit and a set amount of times he is able to use it, before he proceeds to pin Ichigo's arms to the ground with his sword and then tries to incinerate him with a Cero.
  • Shipper on Deck: In Can't Fear Your Own World, Liltotto asks him if Nelliel is Ichigo's girlfriend. Grimmjow says that she is not and explains that Ichigo would only be interested in a girl from the Human World, and that Orihime would be an ideal partner for Ichigo.
  • Skewed Priorities: The first thing he does when he finally returns during the Thousand Year Blood War is try to start another fight with Ichigo, even though he's supposed to be helping Ichigo and his friends take down Yhwach and the last Sternritters. Nelliel immediately calls him out on this.
  • Slasher Smile: Grimmjow almost-constantly flashes a vicious, toothy smile due to his rampant bloodlust. Just look at the picture.
  • Smarter Than You Look: While violent and bloodthirsty, Grimmjow is much more perceptive and analytical than he lets on. Ulquiorra, for example, found out the hard way when Grimmjow used a smokescreen to trap him in a pocket dimension.
  • Sore Loser: After losing his third fight with Ichigo, Grimmjow refused to accept defeat despite being injured and unable to fight anymore. Ichigo even calls him out on that telling Grimmjow that there is no point if all he wants is to destroy anything around him and people he doesn't like with nothing to rule over as king. He tells him if he hates him that much, he'll fight him whenever he wants but for now, he needs to accept his loss and let it go. And while Grimmjow does seem to consider it, Nnoitra attacks him before he can let if fully sink in. Even upon his return, Grimmjow shows no gratitude towards Ichigo for saving his life and only cares more about getting payback claiming that their fight is unsettled. Nelliel even calls him out for his obsession with Ichigo, especially when the fate of the world is at stake all.
  • The Sociopath: Grimmjow believes that he is destined to become the king of Hollows and that anyone else is either a steppingstone or obstacle to get rid of, a follower who will serve him in reaching that point, or a rival that needs to be put down for getting between him and that goal. When his loyal Fracciónes are all killed, he shrugs off their deaths rather easily and shows more anger about how his reckless actions got his arm chopped off and kicked off the Espada as punishment. As soon as Orihime heals his arm, he gleefully kills Luppi by impaling him through the torso and obliterating his upper body with a Cero. While he works for Aizen, he holds no loyalty to him beyond the fact that he isn't strong enough to take Aizen down, which greatly irritates him. He goes against orders on a number of occasions and saves Orihime from Loly and Menoly only so that she can heal Ichigo so that he can have his showdown with him. In the final arc where he is technically on the same side as Ichigo, he makes it very clear that he is only helping him save the world from Yhwach to have his death match with him and couldn't care less otherwise.
  • Sole Survivor: He and Halibel are the only survivors among the Espada.
  • Stock Shōnen Rival: He is this to Ichigo. He always had a desire to defeat Ichigo at his strongest after getting scarred by his Getsuga Tensho and briefly fought for the good guys in order to fight him one more time. He is a Foil of Ichigo, as Grimmjow is a Blood Knight who only cares about getting stronger and reigning Hueco Mundo as King, while Ichigo is a Blood Knight in denial over how much he enjoys fights and seeks to protect his friends. Grimmjow is also the only member of Aizen's army who points out that it would be more practical to just kill Ichigo now before he can become strong enough to pose a threat, but Aizen (who has bigger plans for Ichigo), shoots this idea down and when Grimmjow decides to do so anyway he is punished by Tosen for disobeying orders by hacking off Grimmjow's arm.
  • Tail Slap: He grows a cat-like tail in Resurrección state that's powerful enough to send Ichigo flying with one hit.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Implied why he chooses to brutalize Loly and Menoly. After seeing what the two female Arrancars did to Orihime out of spite and jealousy, Grimmjow brutally assaults them both in a similar manner that they did to Orihime.
  • There Was a Door: When he interrupts Loly and Menoly beating up Orihime, he enters the room by blowing open a hole in the wall about five feet from the door. Loly decides to point out the obvious.
Loly: Why didn't you use the door, smartass?
  • Third Time's The Charm: The first two times he tried to release his Zanpakuto, he was interrupted before he could do so. Gin made fun of it in an omake. It is only in his third and final battle against Ichigo that he is able to use his Resurrección uninhibited.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Grimmjow is technically on the side of the heroes during the final arc, but it is not for heroic reasons. Grimmjow's great desire is to meet Ichigo again so that he can engage in a fight to the death, something he feels is unresolved. He claims the reason he agreed to help Urahara is to achieve that desire. However, his attempt to restart their old fight is interrupted by Nelliel, who warns him they've got bigger fish to fry.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Since his defeat at the hands of Ichigo, Grimmjow trained harder than he ever did, devouring Hollow after Hollow to become stronger, and it pays off, as upon his return in the Thousand Year Blood War he proves instrumental in defeating the Quincies Quilge and Askin by killing the both of them (the latter with assistance from Urahara). Can't Fear Your Own World reveal that his reiatsu is higher than ever, with Kenpachi noticing it's far higher than Nnoitra. He was able to fight on par with the newly modified Luppi despite the latter being far more powerful thanks to Mayuri's modifications and, alongside Nelliel and Harribel, has evolved into a Vasto Lorde Arrancar making him now one of the very few Arrancars that is a Vasto Lorde. Even Harribel takes note of this, refusing to ever try to fight him, strongly implying Grimmjow is stronger (if not as strong) as her and Nelliel.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: While still a jerk most of the time, Grimmjow has mellowed out enough to not go out and kill anyone who angers him like he used to and is more civil and mature compared to his short-tempered self in the past.
  • Torso with a View: Grimmjow's Hollow hole is located in the middle of his abdomen.
  • Underestimating Badassery: How he was defeated by Askin. Because of the latter just running away rather than fighting him Grimmjow thought of him as a waste of time and got poisoned by him because he foolishly swiped at his attack rather than avoid it entirely. Thankfully, after being healed by Urahara, Grimmjow learned from his mistake and dealt the killing blow to the Quincy once he let his guard down.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Grimmjow shows no gratitude towards Ichigo for saving his life from Nnoitra and even has the gall to try to fight him right again the moment they reunite, not even caring about the fate of Hueco Mundo or his fellow Arrancars. However, based by Grimmjow's response to Ichigo as to why he's helping them, implies that deep down, that he's lying about why he's helping them and is too prideful to admit it but is grateful for Ichigo saving him.
  • Unusual Ears: His released form gives him long catlike ears with furry tufts.
  • Villainous Friendship: With his Fracciónes, having known them since before they joined Aizen's army.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • At the beginning of the Arrancar Arc when Ulquiorra reports back to Aizen on his findings in the Human World, Grimmjow points out it's a mistake to let Ichigo live. He's proven right since this ultimately costs Ulquiorra's life.
    • When rescuing Orihime from Loly and Menoly, Loly furiously tells Grimmjow that Aizen will never forgive him. Grimmjow retorts that Aizen wouldn't care if two "Arrancar whores" are killed. His statement is proven valid when Aizen turns on Haribel, he tells the shocked Gotei 13 Captains that the Arrancar who follow him should know better than to ever trust him.
    • When Orihime is shocked that Grimmjow only wanted her to heal Ichigo so he could fight him and doesn't want to do that, Grimmjow snaps back making a valid point that Ichigo was dying and he let her save him had he not brought her with him.
    • During his third fight with Ichigo, Grimmjow accuses him of coming to Hueco Mundo because he enjoys a good fight rather than it just being about saving Orihime. By the end of the fight, Ichigo acknowledges Grimmjow was right.
  • Villainous Rescue:
    • He demolishes Menoly and brutalizes Loly, the latter of whom was abusing Orihime, in order to get her to revive Ichigo for another fight. However, this was also his way of thanking her for restoring his left arm. Once they get to Ichigo and she starts healing him, Grimmjow is confronted by Ulquiorra and seals him in Caja Negacion.
    • Grimmjow saves Urahara, Orihime, Nel and Chad from Quilge Opie by cutting him in half from behind.
    • During the climax of Urahara's fight with Askin who forced him to use his Bankai for the first time, Grimmjow saves Urahara from certain death by delivering the final blow from behind.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Before the time-skip, his tiny bolero jacket covers nothing, and it gets shredded more often than not. After the time-skip, he wears a black shirt underneath the bolero.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: His Gran Rey Cero, noted by Harribel's Fracciónes to be forbidden under Las Noches. Due to its blast radius, it's easy to see why. It is also considered to be a particularly powerful Cero, by Grimmjow himself.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He threatens to kill Nel if she doesn't stop crying over Ichigo's grievous injuries from Ulquiorra, though she was lucky to at least get a warning first.
  • Worthy Opponent: It's clear he considers Ichigo one from their numerous fights they've had, something Ichigo reciprocates.

(#7) Septima Espada - Zommari Rureaux

Zommari Rureaux

Resurrección
"Everything is 'governed' by its rightful master. Subordinates act under the orders of their superiors. The masses live under the rule of their king. The clouds move according to the will of the wind. The moonlight is ruled by the light of the sun."
Species: Arrancar
Zanpakuto: Brujeria
Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki (JP), Neil Kaplan (EN), Arturo Casanova (Latin-American Spanish)

The 7th of the Espada members. He claims to be the fastest of the Espada, fast enough to temporarily create clones of himself to confuse and trap the enemy. He's usually very calm and contemplative, but he harbors a deep hatred for Soul Reapers for killing Hollows. He defines the death aspect of 'Intoxication'. The location of his number tattoo is unknown, and his Hollow hole is in his right nipple.

His Zanpakuto is Brujeria, and it transforms his lower body into something similar to that of a sea urchin with 50 eyes covering his body. Each of these eyes are capable of "tagging" targets and telekinetically controlling said targets. If the eyes are incapacitated, he can open 8 more on his forehead.

  • All There in the Manual: The Unmasked Data book reveals that he used to be a king, without further elaborating on it.
  • Ambiguous Situation: An interview to promote the final arc revealed which Espada will return. Grimmjow, Nel and Harribel were stated to return, as they had survived the events of the Arrancar Saga. Notably Starrk, Nnoitra and Zommari were given a small chance to return, while the other Espada were given zero, With the final arc being cut short it remains unknown what the significance of said distinction was. Starrk, Nnoitra, Zommari, Szayelaporro, and Aaroniero were killed by a Zanpakuto (Barragan died by his own powers, Yammy of blood loss, and Ulquiorra was fatally injured by a Cero), which would mean that they were either cleansed and ended up in Soul Society or ended up in Hell.
  • Animal Motifs: His Resurrección resembles a sea urchin in design, specifically the lower part. This doubles as brilliance as sea urchins were often used in witchcraft in Denmark and Southern England. Which prominently feature in the Evil Eye aspect of sorcery of which Zommari utilizes.
  • Antagonist Abilities: Zommari's abilities are designed to turn everything around him into a weapon, including his opponents' own limbs. Further, if he manages to mark your head, he can directly control you and force you to either commit suicide or attack your own allies.
  • Bald of Evil: He doesn't have a speck of hair on his head, instead having his mask remnants in the form of spikes.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Despite his loathing of Soul Reapers, made very adamantly clear in his defeat, he himself follows Aizen, a Soul Reaper devoutly and being an Arrancar, a Hollow with Soul Reaper powers on top of it.
  • Break the Haughty: Tried to perform one on Byakuya by using his ability to in his words, "take his hubris and pulverize it" through the use of his Resurreccion. However, when Byakuya manages to shut down each of his abilities with ease once he turns the tables, Zommari is the one getting his pride shattered, leading to his own death as he dies an incoherent mess.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Zommari's Resurrección grants him a useful and powerful mind control ability. However, its shape (which replaces his legs with a pink, pumpkin-like bulb) seems to have deprived him of his speed, as once Byakuya learned that he could block Zommari's ability with Kido, the Espada did little to move or attempt to dodge the Soul Reaper's attacks.
  • Doppelgänger Spin: Has the ability to move so quickly he can create clones of himself. These clones are capable of attacking but only last a short time.
  • Drunk with Power: His aspect of death is "intoxication". After releasing, he shows a great deal of arrogance and condescension towards his opponent and has a villainous breakdown when he realizes he's really not that great.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Byakuya, sort of. They are both stoic yet Not So Stoic underneath, both of their special abilities involve speed and Kido-based abilities. The difference lies in the 'passion' part of their natures. Zommari represented intoxication and therefore had never learned to reign in excess. Byakuya, however, had learned a long time ago to discipline the excesses within his own personality.
  • Explaining Your Power to the Enemy: Explaining the nature of his Resurrección to Byakuya was what enabled the Soul Reaper to pinpoint the weak spots in his technique and kill him.
  • Extra Eyes: He has 48 eyes on his release form's body in addition to his two normal eyes, and eight more open up on his forehead in the last part of the fight.
  • Fantastic Racism: Zommari holds a very high amount of disdain towards Soul Reapers for killing Hollows. He accuses Soul Reapers of acting superior, and states that Hollows are just acting on their instincts for self-preservation and that Soul Reapers are under no authority to kill Hollows.
  • Faux Affably Evil: For the first half of the fight, he's respectful towards the Captain and is very polite, even though he also simultaneously belittles him. This politeness hides a hypocritical loathing towards Soul Reapers as he despises them for killing Hollows for being what they are.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: His BANZAI! AIZEN-SAMA!!! was more or less left untranslated in the English dub, apart from replacing "Aizen-sama" with "Lord Aizen".
  • Hypocrite: In spite of his loathing of Soul Reapers for killing Hollows, he's devoutly worships Sōsuke Aizen, a Soul Reaper.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Pulled this several times during his fight with Byakuya, which include the fact that he can do up to five speed clones, his lower half acting as a last resort defense and his reveal of eight more eyes in his forehead to launch another attack. However, none of these attacks have any long term advantage over Byakuya.
  • Large Ham: While normally a Cold Ham, Zommari in his Villainous Breakdown goes entirely hammy, especially in his death thralls when he goes on an insane rant about his worship of Aizen.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Self-proclaimed fastest Espada, capable of creating tangible afterimages, and strong enough to fight evenly with a Captain for an extended period. Even when Byakuya unleashes Gokei: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, Zommari survives that attack.
  • Logical Weakness: His eyes can control anything they look at. Thing—singular. If there are more threats than he has eyes, then he can't do a thing about them all.
  • Marionette Master: His release ability Amor allows him to control anyone he looks at.
  • Moral Myopia: He hates Soul Reapers for killing Hollows simply because Hollows eat Human Souls, and he rants about how Soul Reapers have no God given right to hunt them. It never occurs to him that, by his logic, Hollows have no right to prey on Humans either.
  • Neck Snap: During his sword release, he twists his head 90 degrees to the right.
  • Out of Focus: All the other Espada get some amount of focus in terms of their pasts and relationships with other characters to give them a certain measure of depth. Zommari is the sole exception, largely only appearing to fight Byakuya, and is given the least amount of focus of the Espada. Even in supplementary material he is given barely any further characterization.
  • Pride: Inevitable as he serves as an Evil Counterpart for Byakuya. Seriously, almost all the talk during their fight is about "Which one of us is the most prideful, therefore the most despicable?".
  • Scary Black Man: Noticeably dark skin and is also one of Aizen's most powerful subordinates who can turn people into People Puppets against their will, up to and including forcing them to commit suicide.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Byakuya easily proved Zommari was this. The self-proclaimed fastest Espada was no match for a Soul Reaper who was functioning with only one arm and one leg and for all his strength, in the end he was defeated through Kido and a sealed Zanpakuto. As Byakuya said, "You make the title 'fastest Espada' weep".
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: When he arrives at the aftermath of the battle where Aaroniero and Rukia fought, he criticizes the dead Aaroniero for being weak and careless and not assuring that he really killed his opponent, though he does lament the loss of the final member of the original generation’s Espada.
  • Sycophantic Servant: He's a devout worshiper to Sōsuke Aizen, seeing him as a savior figure. This its especially prominent in his last words before he died.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Byakuya showed he could easily counteract his ability twice. He didn't actually say it out loud, but his facial expression left no doubt about it. Much more blatant in the anime though.
  • Torso with a View: His Hollow hole is over his right nipple according to the databook.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Once Byakuya figures out how to counter his Amor, Zommari's sense of cool goes out the window and he continues using his Amor over and over again despite it clearly not working, hysterically demanding that Byakuya accept his "love". After Byakuya has him dead to rights, Zommari begins raving about the arrogance of Soul Reapers like Byakuya hunting Hollows, until the captain finally silences him for good.
  • Undignified Death: Initial impressions of him when he was first revealed were that he seemed like a composed sort. Fast-forward to his death where he's pathetically cheering for Aizen while Byakuya obliterates him with Senbonzakura.
  • We Hardly Knew You: He's fight with Byakuya was one of the (if not the) shortest fights of Espada and even in The Unmasked Data book the only thing revealed about him is that he was once a king.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Complains about this to Byakuya — he even made a few good points. Unfortunately, he made them while trying to kill Byakuya's beloved younger sister when she was unconscious and defenseless. This, of course, made it personal, so Zommari got killed anyway.

(#8) Octava Espada - Szayelaporro Granz

Szayelaporro Granz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbs_szayelaporro.png
Resurrección
Jailer of Hell
"Eternally repeating that cycle of death and rebirth, an existence such as this... truly, mine is what may be called a 'perfect existence'!"
Species: Menos / Arrancar (Vasto Lorde / Adjuchas)
Zanpakuto: Fornicaras
Voiced by: Kosuke Toriumi (JP), Ben Diskin (EN), Javier Olguín (Latin-American Spanish)

Szayelaporro is the 8th Espada and head of research development in Hueco Mundo. He is pretty much a lot like Mayuri: prepared for anything, has little to no feelings for other beings, and is a complete mad scientist. He also considers himself a perfect being with his powers. Everything he does is...well, nasty. He defines the death aspect of 'Madness'. The location of his number tattoo is on his left eyeball, and his Hollow hole is in his penis.

His Zanpakuto is Fornicaras and yes, it does mean "you will fornicate" in Spanish. It gives him a parasitic worm motif with various and deadly abilities, including something eerily similar to voodoo.

  • Agent Peacock: Szayelaporro will stop a fight just so he can change into a less torn set of clothing and whose entire theme is full of sexual innuendo. As an Espada, he can take on Shinigami captains and he's a leader of Hollows, although he tends to cultivate followers solely to eat them when he needs to power up.
  • All There in the Manual: The novel Spirits are forever with you reveals his past as human, the relationship with his brother Yylfordt, how he became a Hollow and how he got demoted from the Espada before climbing up the ranks again.
  • And I Must Scream: Due to a drug he accidentally injests, his perceptions are sped up to the point that the few seconds it takes for Mayuri to very slowly kill him seem like they took thousands of years. Thousands of years of simply staring at a sword and waiting for it to stab him. By the end of it, he is begging to hurry up and die.
  • Animal Motifs: His Resurrección is related to parasitic worms, emphasized by his ability to take over the body of anything that devours him in this state. The tentacles he gains also make him resemble a butterfly, and he describes himself as a phoenix, an immortal bird that is reborn every time it dies.
  • Antagonist Abilities: With preparation time and advance analysis of future opponents, Szayelaporro can nullify any of his opponent's powers. He can use his wings to create Voodoo Dolls that mimic his opponents powers and fight on his behalf - if he crushes those dolls, the real opponent will take the equivalent damage and if the opponents crush the dolls, more dolls will appear. He can even take control of anything that eats him and resurrect himself by allowing him to burrow into an opponent and consume them from the inside out.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Given enough time to properly analyze his opponents' reiatsu, he can easily No-Sell anything that they throw at him. He tells Pesche and Dondochakka that their Combination Attack failed simply because they didn't use it sooner.
  • Ax-Crazy: He's normally calm and collected, though mocking. However, he defines the aspect of Madness, and it shows: he is completely unhinged. While he is not as kill-happy as Yammy or Grimmjow, he more than makes up for it with his wanton sadism and the sheer joy he takes in inflicting pain on his enemies. When he tortures Uryu and Renji, he laughs maniacally like he is having the time of his life. He also specifically designed his Fracciónes so that he can heal his injuries by feeding on them.
  • Badass Boast: Szayelaporro brags at length about how he's perfect and how Mayuri can never win...right before Mayuri's superhuman drug takes effect, incapacitating the Arrancar and allows Mayuri to win. His boast merely pissed Mayuri off as well.
  • Bad Boss: Easily the worst one among the Espada. Szayelaporro sees his Fracciónes as expendable and is more than happy to casually kill them if they get in his way. He also modified their bodies so that he can use them to heal himself should he be injured in battle... by eating them alive. He shows this by savagely devouring one of his Fracciónes, which horrifies the other. He then yells at the wailing Fracción to shut up.
  • Body Horror: When he returns from Hell, his left arm is shown to be skeletal and perpetually burning, plus pus spontaneously leaks out of his temples to form a pair of horns.
  • Body Snatcher: Fitting his parasitic worm motif, if he is eaten while in Resurrección, he will take over his devourer's nervous system, enabling him to control their bodies. He pulls this on Mayuri's Bankai after being devoured by it and reviving with Nemu's body to kill the Captain with his own weapon, but Mayuri reveals he, ready even to face an enemy that might somehow use his Bankai against him, booby-trapped his own Bankai with an on-demand self-destruct.
  • Came Back Strong: Having been sent to Hell after being killed, Szayelaporro returns as a Sinner in the "New Breaths From Hell" one-shot, seeking revenge against Renji, Uryu, and Mayuri. Even worse, he's a Jailer of Hell — granting him a degree of clairvoyance and the ability to control the chains of Hell. He easily overwhelms Renji and puts up a good fight against Ichigo, but after the recently-damned Ukitake intercedes he decides to return to Hell rather than finish them off.
  • Camp Straight: With his pink hair and exceedingly feminine-sounding voice, Szayelaporro also displays rather suspect mannerisms, such as commenting on his opponents' attractiveness, and should his clothes be damaged, he'll stop the fight to change. However, despite his stereotypically flamboyant mannerisms and appearance, he is disturbed when he thinks Renji's actions could be considered flirtation.
  • Carnivorous Healing Factor: In episode 164 of the anime, Espada #8 Szayelaporro Grantz modified his Fracciónes (subordinate Arrancars) so he could heal himself by eating them.
  • Chain Pain: As a Jailer of Hell, he can utilize the chains of Hell as offensive tools. He can control a large amount to act as Combat Tentacles aswell as swing one around for personal defense.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: One of Szayelaporro's powers in his Resurrección enables him to create doll-like copies of his enemies, which he can damage to inflict pain and injury. He uses this ability on Ishida and Renji to slowly torture them by rupturing their organs one by one.
  • Clothing Damage: After receiving damage from Ishida's Sprenger, Szayalaporro is left half-naked. After recovering from his wounds by eating a Fracción, he interrupts the battle to change to new clothes. Although, he also uses this opportunity to re-analyze his opponents' reiatsu in secret, allowing him to avoid Pesche and Dondochakka's Cero Sincrético later.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Szayelaporro prepares contingency plans and comes up with ways to counteract his enemies on-the-fly, and even if he is defeated has a number of ways to recover and keep fighting.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Apparently he was simply stabbed in the chest. What makes it cruel and unusual is that he experienced it (and the subsequent pain) like it lasted centuries or even millennia.
"It's been so long. How many years, how many decades have come and gone since he... No, wait. It's been longer than that! It's been centuries! I know this much: an immense amount of time has passed. How long will it take? When will this sword go ahead and pierce my heart? This waiting is unbearable! Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry! HURRY UP AND KILL ME!!!"
  • Darker and Edgier: He goes from being an Agent Peacock with a pronounced creep factor to a more outwardly menacing figure during his time in Hell. His hair is longer and lank, he's missing an eye, one of his arms has been burnt to the bone and his immaculate attire has been replaced with rags.
  • Death by Irony:
    • Effortlessly trashes Renji because he was using Yylfort to spy on him and knew how to counter all of Renji's techniques. Then gets taken apart by Mayuri because he did the same thing to him using Ishida.
    • Szayelapporo would find himself on the receiving end of this as well. His motif is "Madness" and Mayuri beat him by infecting Szayelapporro with an experimental drug that would cause him to feel as if time is passing by at a frustratingly slow pace. By the time Mayuri decided to deliver the killing stroke, Szayelapporro was already mentally broken.
  • Dub Name Change: Apparently "Fornicaras" was too risque by [adult swim]'s standards, so in the TV broadcast they changed it to "La Lujuriosa" ("the lustful"). In the Italian manga the command "sip" (sorseggia) was changed to "succhia" (Suck), with everything that implies...
  • Evil Counterpart: He is essentially the Espada version of Mayuri Kurotsuchi. While both are truly awful people, Mayuri comes across as being slightly better in that he does the terrible things he does For Science!. Szayelaporro, on the other hand believes that he's already perfect and does the things he does for pure sadism. Mayuri is disgusted with Szayelaporro's arrogant view that he is perfect and gives a scathing "The Reason You Suck" Speech while killing him in a horrific, though very much deserved, manner.
  • Evil Genius: Szayelaporro is completely insane and twisted but is not much of a physical fighter. However, he makes up for his lack of fighting ability with his genius level intellect that rivals Mayuri's brilliance. He can design advanced traps around Las Noches, and can analyze the powers and abillities of his enemies, and can develop means to nullify them to make himself immune.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Szayelaporro sees himself as something of an actor. He treats his battle with Uryu and Renji as a theater play, and has a very bombastic and flamboyant way of speaking. He even takes the time to briefly halt his fight to change clothes, almost like a play rehearsal.
  • Evil Knockoff: One of his Resurrección powers unleashes dark liquid upon his enemies, and creates clones of them when they make physical contact with as little as a droplet of that liquid. As an added quirk, he sometimes modifies the clones' appearance to suit his personal "sense of aesthetics".
  • Evilutionary Biologist: Szayelaporro is an utterly insane Mad Scientist who is obsessed with reaching perfection, performing all sorts of grotesque and sadistic experiments in his pursuit of it. His Gabriel ability lets him rebirth himself by implanting a part of himself in another person. He then devours the fluids of the victim and sprouts out of their body which has been reduced to an emaciated husk. It's because of this ability, that he believes that he is "perfect". His belief that he has obtained godlike perfection through his Resurrección sets him apart from his fellow sadistic mad scientist Mayuri, who spits on the notion of perfection and kills him for slandering science.
  • Eye Scream: Szayaelapporo's left eye is replaced with a black pit when he emerges from Hell.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Szayelaporro usually projects a calm and polite demeanor. But do not be fooled. Beneath that facade, Szaeylaporro is an arrogant, depraved, ruthless, and sadistic monster of a Mad Scientist with a hunger for reaching perfection.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He is a sadistic Mad Scientist whose mask remnants resemble eyeglasses.
  • Gag Penis: The Beyond Resurrección in Brave Souls places the Hogyoku in the Espada’s Hollow hole. Since his Hollow hole is in his glans, it’s apparent what that long black tendril from between his legs housing the Hogyoku must be…
  • Geek Physiques: During the early stages of his fight with Ishida and Renji, his clothing is so badly damaged by Ishida's Sprenger explosion that his entire torso is exposed revealing how thin his body is. However, unlike other thin characters, such as Ishida, Nnoitra or even Ichigo, there is no muscle definition to his form and every clear shot of his body heavily emphasises the shape and position of his ribs. While other thin characters are muscled or well-toned, Szayelaporro simply looks emaciated. Unlike most other Espada, he doesn't fight physically. He takes the time to research his potential opponents in advance so that, by the time he's confronting them, he's figured out how to negate their abilities; for him, battle is a scientific puzzle to be solved through the power of intellect. When physical fighting is required, he can create copycat dolls of his opponents, forcing his opponents to fight the dolls instead of him.
  • Hate Sink: Even among the Espada, Szayelapporo is by far the most detestable bastard of them all, possibly even more so than Nnoitra. He's an Ax-Crazy Mad Scientist who treats his own Fracciónes like crap, views people as research materials and has no qualms on murdering and experimenting on them, and a sadistic and arrogant bastard who enjoys hurting others. His past doesn't help as well, as it's revealed that when he was human, he was behind torturing and murdering many people through horrible and unethical experiments. His actions almost makes Mayuri Kurotsuchi look like a complete angel.
  • Hollywood Voodoo: He creates dolls of his opponents by temporarily absorbing them into his "wings". These dolls contain pills that represent each of the victim's internal organs and bear their names in Spanish. Destroying any of these pills does the same to its associated organ.
  • Holy Halo: Subverted. When Szayelapporo is condemned to Hell, his Hollow hole separates from his body and forms a ring behind him, akin to a halo.
  • Horned Humanoid: In addition to his not-so-Holy Halo, Szayelapporo can sprout a pair of devilish horns.
  • Hypocritical Humour: Despite being laden with innuendo and having a Zanpakuto whose name means "fornicate", he is creeped out by Pesche taking out his Zanpakuto from his loincloth.
"Just what are you pulling out of there?!"
  • Immortality Seeker: Szayelaporro is obsessed with obtaining what he sees as perfection, complete immortality, and sacrificed a significant amount of his power in order to be able to perfect his "Gabriel" ability. Upon activating it to fight Mayuri he gives a big speech about how he is "perfect", "immaculate", and "immortal", but Mayuri proves him wrong.
  • Impromptu Tracheotomy: Gets hit by Seele Schinder in the neck. In the anime, the attack instead landed in his chest.
  • Intimate Marks:
    • He's one of the few Espada whose Hollow Hole and Espada Tattoo are never shown. Word of God says the former is on his genitalia.
    • This is no longer the case after becoming a Sinner, his Hollow hole now manifesting as a very unholy Holy Halo instead. Additionally, the chain markings on his face resemble the number 8.
  • Karmic Death: From his perspective, it took centuries or millennia for Mayuri's leisurely sword strike to finally reach his chest, at which point he was even more insane with sheer boredom and begging for death inside his mind.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Albeit very debatable on the "love" part, this is an invoked example where, unlike most Hollows, Szayelaporro decided to eat his brother Yylfordt's soul when he was still a Plus in order to become one himself. In doing so, he successfully corrupted his own soul and transformed into a Hollow, and Szayelaporro was no less happy because of it.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Is far more depraved compared to the rest of his comrades and he wastes no time showing how much of an awful person he is.
  • Large Ham: Especially during his fight with Mayuri.
  • Laughably Evil: In much the same vein as his counterpart, Mayuri, a good amount of Szayelaporro's screentime crosses over into morbid, vaguely uncomfortable humor, mostly on account of his ridiculous, flamboyant hamminess. He's so absurd he even stops a battle so he can go change his outfit.
  • Life Drinker: His Gabriel ability allows him to "impregnate" himself into a target after he's taken massive damage, at which point he absorbs all of the bodily fluids and nutrients of his victim, allowing him to fully regenerate his body.
  • Mad Scientist: He's the scientist of Aizen's army of Arrancar, and has created all manner of strange inventions. He's also every bit as amoral as fellow mad scientist, Mayuri, if not more so. He represents the aspect of death known as "madness" and his Fracciónes are specifically designed to heal his injuries by being eaten by him. In the battle between Szayelaporro and Mayuri, the fight ended up boiling down to which scientist was the most insane and the most capable of using that insanity in disturbingly creative ways. The winner, by a large margin, was Mayuri. According to Aaroniero in the prelude to The Hell Verse, Szayalaporro isn't as strong without his laboratory.
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: Well, all Hollows eat humans, and many eat other Hollows before they're made into Arrancar, but Szayelaporro is the only Arrancar shown eating other Arrancars. Specifically, his own Fracciónes are designed to act as powerful healing medicine when he eats them.
  • Moral Event Horizon: In-Universe, he crossed the Blue-and-Orange Morality line for Mayuri by claiming to have achieved perfection, which offends Mayuri as a man of science. In Mayuri's words, a scientist is someone who seeks to constantly improve. So by saying that he was perfect, Szayelaporro was saying that he no longer needed to improve, and had thus lost the right to call himself a scientist.
  • Mythical Motifs: He equates his Gabriel technique to the Phoenix, as he can turn death into a mere segment of his life cycle before creating a new body from someone else's Reishi.
  • Nerd Glasses: His mask fragments resemble glasses, befitting his Geek Physique and status as the Espada's resident Mad Scientist. He even pushes them up, showing they're not strongly attached to his face.
  • Not Quite Dead: In the promo for The Hell Verse movie, Szayelaporro and Aaroniero quite literally went to Hell together after their deaths in Hueco Mundo. They basically went from one form of dead to another. The novel plays with this idea by having a clone named Cien Granz return to attack Soul Society after getting a power-up.
  • Out-Gambitted: Szayelaporro uses the rebirth power of his Resurrección to recreate himself inside Nemu, but in doing so is affected by a "Superhuman Drug" that was placed in Nemu's body beforehand by Mayuri, who then takes his sweet time explaining that the drug had just increased his senses to the point where his body falls grossly behind and cannot move, paralyzing him as seconds become centuries. This is what leads to his death.
  • Overly Long Name: Szayelaporro has quite a lot of syllables (five) and it is never shortened despite how mouthful it is.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: According to one of Kubo's Q&As, Szayelaporro and Yylfordt are twins, as their shared birthday and relative physical similarities would imply. Their personalities and abilities can't be anymore different from one another.
  • Post-Mortem Comeback: An incredibly gruesome case. After getting devoured by Ashisogi Jizo, Szayelaporro reanimated himself within Nemu's intestines, after burrowing into her body via her navel. Her stomach ended up grossly enlarged, splitting her skin open and allowing him to be "reborn" through her mouth. The process left her an emaciated, shrivelled-up husk. It didn't work, ultimately, since he absorbed a sense-accelerating substance that was placed into Nemu beforehand by Mayuri, which led to his own Cruel and Unusual Death.
  • Psycho Pink: Szayelaporro is a Sissy Villain with pink hair. He is also an Ax-Crazy Evil Genius.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: A posthumous example. After Nemu sacrifices herself in a failed attempt to destroy Pernida, a hallucination of Szayelaporro mocks Mayuri over his grief. He calls Mayuri a hypocrite for being someone who hates perfection, yet he considered Nemu to be his perfect creation. Mayuri quickly gets over his grief upon hearing this.
  • Resurrective Immortality: By the use of his Gabriel ability he can resurrect himself inside the body of his target, potentially killing them in the process.
  • Retired Badass: The Spirits are Forever With You light novel reveals that Szayelaporro used to be the original Espada Zero, but finding himself unable to achieve Gabriel with his current level of power, he excised his brother's soul from within him, viewing it as the root of his imperfection. Devolving back to being an Adjuchas and losing his Espada rank in the process, Szayelaporro continued to develop and perfect his ability and was eventually re-accepted back into the Espada, but since he was not as powerful as he had once been he was only granted the eighth spot.
  • Sadist: Szayelaporro takes a perverse glee in inflicting pain. When he was human, he was a deranged alchemist who greatly enjoyed performing grotesque experiments on prisoners that his brother abducted. During his battle with Uryu and Renji, he goes out of his way to torture them both in a needlessly cruel way; by using voodoo dolls to rupture their organs, not even bothering to kill them immediately.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Tite Kubo revealed in the Masked interview that some of the Espada were modeled after the Seven Deadly Sins. His Resurrección, Fornicaras, which means "you will fornicate" in Spanish, along with his ability to "impregnate" an enemy with himself mark him as Lust.
  • Siblings in Crime: He was this with his older brother Yylfordt as human, who supplied him with unwilling test subjects from his war prisoners to use for his horrific experiments.
  • Sinister Surveillance: He has spy bugs placed on his brother, and in every section of his lair which he uses to learn all he can about Ishida and Renji.
  • Sissy Villain: Szayelaporro's slender physique and pink hair give him an almost effeminate appearance, and he is is very much concerned about his clothes and hair - briefly abandoning his fight with Ishida and Renji to change his uniform when it's damaged, and complaining that Gabriel messes up his hair.
  • Smug Snake: He may be a bona fide Evil Genius, he also believes himself to be unsurpassable, an infallible intellect, and the perfect being because of his nightmarish methods of escaping from death. And his only fights prior to Mayuri are him attacking people he has already analyzed to put the advantage overwhelmingly in his favor. When he overestimates himself too much against Mayuri, however, his every technique is thwarted and he winds up dying horrifically because he tried to kill Nemu to save himself.
  • The Sociopath: Just like Mayuri, Szayelaporro does not view the people around him as living beings, but as research material. He sees nothing wrong with turning his own Fracciónes into edible food sources to heal his injuries, nor does he see anything wrong with sacrificing someone else in order to use his Gabriel technique. When Renji assumes that he wants to avenge his brother Yylfordt, he laughs off the notion as to him, losing his brother would cause the same emotional reaction as to losing a box.
  • Torso with a View: Subverted. Per Word of God his Hollow hole is located on the tip of his penis which, while commonly of significant sentimental value, is not vitally important.
  • Two Siblings In One: After eating his brother's soul for his first victim, Szayelaporro as a Hollow took on Yylfordt's Blood Knight aspects. Eventually, he evolved into an incredibly powerful Vasto Lorde. However, Yylfordt's wild tendencies in battle proved to be an obstacle to Szayelaporro's scientific pursuit, leading him to excise his brother's soul as a separate entity and becoming significantly weaker as a result.
  • Ultimate Life Form: Claimed to be perfect, since he can come back to life after being killed and take over anything that eats him. This greatly angered Mayuri, who killed him in a truly sadistic manner, while giving him a scathing speech on why he is wrong.
  • Unknown Rival: When he returns from Hell and attacks Renji, he attacks Ichigo when he shows up and rants about how he's wanted to kill him for some time. Renji and Ishida apparently never told anyone about their fight, so Ichigo gets confused because he has no idea who Szayelaporro is.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Starts out smug and confident in his superiority. When Mayuri starts messing with him, he throws a temper tantrum and starts swearing a lot. He's also breaking down shortly before his death, begging for Mayuri to hurry up, but then again from his perspective, he's been frozen in place with a sword slooooooooooowly piercing him for an ETERNITY by then.
  • Was Once a Man: The Spirits are Forever With You light novel reveals that when he was human he had been a sadistic alchemist who performed twisted experiments on prisoners captured by his older brother — a bloodthirsty general; explaining why he was sent to Hell in the Hell Chapter tie-in. Killed by the vengeful Hollow manifested from the souls of those he had killed, the alchemist ate his own brother as well as the Hollow, becoming a Hollow himself. After becoming a Vasto Lorde he became Baraggan Louisenbairn's court alchemist, and upon Aizen's takeover he became the first Espada Zero.
  • Weak, but Skilled: He himself freely admits he lacks raw power despite being an Espada, even having average skill in swordsmanship in comparison to the others. He compensates with his intelligence and having numerous unique abilities.
  • We Have Reserves: He treats his Fracciónes and even his own brother as disposable. He has created his own Fracciónes himself, for the sole purpose to eat them to restore his body.
  • The Worf Effect: Very rare villainous version. He appears in the prelude of Hell Verse solely as a means of helping the audience gauge the power level of Hell's denizens.

(#9) Noveno Espada - Aaroniero Arruruerie

Aaroniero Arruruerie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbs_aaroniero_3.png
"If it's about our faces, keep it to yourself. We got tired of hearing people's thoughts about them a very long time ago."
Species: Menos / Arrancar (Gillian)
Zanpakuto: Glotoneria / Nejibana
Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (JP), Kaien Shiba: Dave Mallow, Deep-voiced Mask: Keith Silverstein, High-voiced Mask: Wendee Lee (EN); Kaien Shiba: José Gilberto Vilchis, Deep-Voiced Mask: Ricardo Brust, High-Voiced Mask: Jahel Morga (Latin-American Spanish)

Aaroniero is the 9th and only Gillian Espada. Because of his nonhuman appearance, he usually wears a white mask with eight tiny holes over his head. He is prideful of his status as the last of the first-generation Espada, a position he has managed to maintain due to his potential for infinite growth by continuing to devour other Hollows even as an Arrancar. He defines the death aspect of 'Greed'. His number tattoo is on his heads, and his Hollow hole is in his left thigh.

His Zanpakuto is Glotonería, which transforms him into an enormous octopus-like creature. In this form, he has all the abilities of every Hollow he has devoured at his disposal. He additionally wields Kaien's Nejibana, a trident utilizing water-based attacks.

  • Ax-Crazy: Upon dropping his Kaien facade, he's positively gleeful at the idea of killing Rukia.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: In the manga, the monstrous bottom half of Glotonería upon Resurrección is yellow in the manga, but it's purple in the anime and most video games. In the anime adaptation of The Hell Verse teaser chapter, the anime corrected this by turning it back to yellow.
  • Alliterative Name: Aaroniero Arruruerie.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Aaroniero has the power to absorb and use the abilities and Reiatsu of every Hollow that he has ever eaten. Considering that he's eaten approximately 33,650 Hollows during his time in Hueco Mundo, this means he has access to a lot of different powers.
  • Animal Motifs: His Resurrección resembles an octopus, an animal known for its cannibalism.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Aaroniero is one of the most bizarre Arrancars whose biology is very different from the others. In place of a normal head, he has a big jar with two skulls swimming inside, and instead of a normal left hand, it's a pair of tentacles with a tube made of flesh in the center, said "hand" being his Zanpakuto. When he activates his Resurrección, only his lower half transforms, but into some Lovecraftian-like octopus monster.
  • Brain in a Jar: His "head" under his mask consists of two skulls floating in a jar.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: Unique among Hollows, he is able to assimilate the appearance and powers of anything he eats. This is a plot point, as he assimilated Kaien Shiba — obtaining his appearance, memories and Soul Reaper powers — by virtue of eating Metastacia.
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice: One of the heads have this, courtesy of sound editing, and Mayumi Yamaguchi and Wendee Lee.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: He impersonates Kaien Shiba in order to trick and manipulate Rukia, and tries to convince her to kill herself to atone for Kaien's death.
  • Demonic Possession: Downplayed. Since he absorbed Metastacia, he's able to control the corpse of the last person Metastacia possessed.
  • Dub Name Change: The English dub pronounces his name as "Ah-ro-ni-e-ro". In Japanese, his name is pronounced "Ah-ro-nii-ro".
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He has all of Kaien's skills, memories, and mannerisms, making his impersonation quite convincing on the surface, but he quickly betrays himself by attacking Rukia and then asking her to murder her friends for him, which is painfully out of character for the man whose face he wears and tips Rukia off that she isn't dealing with her kindhearted former lieutenant.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Whenever he poses as Kaien Shiba, he tends to talk in a loud and bombastic manner.
  • Evil Laugh: Lets one out, rather stupidly in retrospect, while holding Rukia on his trident over his head.
  • Face Stealer: One of the applications of his primary power is that he can assume the shape of any Hollow he's eaten. By virtue of absorbing Metastacia, who had fused with Kaien, he's able to use Kaien's face in place of his real one.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: The other head has a rather deep voice, also courtesy of sound editing, and Ryūzaburō Ōtomo and Keith Silverstein.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He keeps his hammy, goofy Kaien Shiba facade even after Rukia figured out he isn't Kaien. However, when she reveals his true face, he drops the act and shows the Laughing Mad Ax-Crazy madman he truly is.
  • Freakiness Shame: He masks the capsule containing his two heads, and tells Rukia that he's sick of people asking him about it.
  • Greed: He's very proud of his ability to steal other peoples' powers and use them for his own purposes. In fact, his goal in life is to evolve into an Ultimate Life Form via endless evolution through being a Power Parasite.
  • Hammerspace: His Zanpakuto takes the form of some pair of tentacles with a tube made of flesh in its center, yet when covered in a glove, it appears and functions like a normal hand.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: While being held in the air by Kaien's Nejibana, Rukia points her broken Zanpakuto at Aaroniero's face and uses Shirafune to restore her sword, stabbing Aaroniero through one of his skulls. She swung her sword down, breaking the rest of his jar and killing him.
  • Informed Ability: According to him, he'd absorbed the special abilities of no less than 33,650 other Hollows. Despite this, he never actually uses any powers other than Kaien's Zanpakuto and some Combat Tentacles. Ulquiorra mentions a third, in passing, calling it synchronized recognition, which apparently let him transmit information between all the Arrancar.
  • Keystone Superpower: Aaroniero Arruruerie has absorbed the power of 33,650 Hollows including Metastacia and, through it, the shinigami Kaien Shiba, Shikai, and all via his Hollow ability "Glotoneria". It allows him to absorb the powers and abilities of dead Hollows without limit, unlike other Hollows who can only absorb power (and not unique abilities) up to a certain limit.
  • Kick the Dog: Aaroniero is somewhat sadistic in that he enjoys toying with his opponents. When he encounters Rukia, he disguises himself as her mentor Kaien Shiba, whom Rukia had killed when he was possessed by a Hollow. Aaroniero tries to tell Rukia to kill her friends to make up for killing Kaien. This tips off Rukia that Aaroniero is not Kaien, as Kaien would never do something that cruel.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: His Zanpakuto takes on the form of a gaping maw with several tentacles surrounding it, which he somehow hides under his glove, and when released he transforms into a grotesque, bloated abomination composed of tentacles and mouths.
  • Making a Splash: Due to having eaten Metastacia, who had fused with Kaien Shiba, he has access to Kaien's Nejibana, which can summon large torrents of water with every swing.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: His skulls both have rows of jagged teeth at their cheeks, while the octopus has faces on the side.
  • Multiple Head Case: Aaroniero has two small skulls inside his jar. The upper one has a very low-pitched voice and uses "ore", while the lower head has a very high-pitched voice and uses "boku". They rarely use plural pronouns to refer to themselves, and sometimes they talk in tandem. In the gag omake "Arrancar Encyclopedia", when Gin Ichimaru asks the two heads which one is "Aaro" and "Niero", they initally respond that the upper head is "Aaro" and the lower head is "Niero", only to immediately follow up that they are not a combination of two people. The two skulls also have different reactions to their own death. "Niero", the head is still intact, screams in pain and asks Aizen for help and doesn't want to accept his suffering. "Aaro", the head that got sliced in half, says calmly that he refuses to accept his fate.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Named after the Finnish Interior Designer Eero Aarnio.
  • Not So Stoic: The head with the deep voice remains stoic for pretty much the entirety of his screentime when alive, but when Aaroniero appears in the promotional teaser chapter of The Hell Verse where he's in Hell, the head can't keep his temper at all when he talks to Szayelaporro or Shuren.
  • Offstage Villainy: Along with Szayelaporro, Aaroniero is the only other Espada that literally went to Hell after death. Unlike Szayelaporro, not enough of him is shown before his death to clarify why he deserved that fate.
  • Power Parasite: Absorbed Kaien Shiba and Metastacia into him, which allowed Aaroniero to use Metastacia's Demonic Possession and Zanpakuto destruction ability, along with the water from Nejibana's Zanpakuto power.
  • Pronoun Trouble: Nobody ever refers to Aaroniero by a pronoun, making it ambiguous over whether Aaroniero is to be referred to as a "he" or as "they" (because of the two talking skulls). Most often, either head uses "I" when referring to themselves as a unit.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": His lower head devolving into this after begging Aizen for help fails to illicit any aid following his defeat at the hand of Rukia and he begins suffocating outside of his container.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: He has two. Aaroniero's resurrección is called Glotonería, meaning "Gluttony". His "Aspect of Death" was confirmed to be Greed.
  • Shapeshifter Guilt Trip: He impersonates Kaien in order to manipulate Rukia, but she figures out he's not the real Kaien when he tells her he'll forgive her if she kills her comrades.
  • Torso with a View: Aaroniero's Hollow hole in in his left thigh. Pretty important bone right there. Also a major artery. Of course, considering what his head and Zanpakuto look like, his body under his clothing probably isn't that humanoid compared to the other Arrrancar.
  • Ultimate Life Form: Claimed to be one, since he gains the powers and memories of anything he eats, plus the powers and memories of anything they ate, giving him the potential for endless evolution.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Once Rukia manages to stab through his jarhead, the top head just curses while the lower head screams about being betrayed by Aizen about never being in pain again.
  • Voice of the Legion: One head has a high-pitched voice and one very deep voice.
  • Weak, but Skilled: He's the only Espada who's a Gillian Arrancar and raw power-wise is the weakest of them all. It's even implied he's weaker than several of the Numeros and Privarons, especially given he's the only Espada who is defeated by someone who isn't at around Captain-level, but he's kept his rank due to possessing the powers of every Hollow he's eaten and his potential for infinite growth.
  • Weakened by the Light: While sunlight hurts him, it does not make him helpless. It does cancel his shapeshifting ability, however.
  • The Worf Effect: Very rare villainous version. He appears in the prelude of Hell Verse solely as a means of helping the audience gauge the power level of Hell's denizens.

(#10) Diez & Cero Espada - Yammy Llargo

Yammy Llargo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbs_yammy.png
Resurrección 1
Resurrección 2
"Piss me off more, and more, and more! The more you do, the more pathetic your final deaths will be!"
Species: Arrancar
Zanpakuto: Ira
Voiced by: Kenji Nomura (JP), Paul St. Peter (EN), Nicolás Frías (Latin-American Spanish)

Ranked 10 and Zero of the Espada, Yammy is clearly the largest of the group. He's extremely arrogant and loves to destroy things and murder everybody in his way, believing they're nothing but insects. He isn't the smartest though and usually has Ulquiorra explain things. In conjunction with this, he also lacks versatility when fighting. He defines the death aspect of 'Rage'. His number tattoo is on his left shoulder and his Hollow hole is in his sternum.

His Zanpakuto is Ira, which transforms him into a gargantuan...thing, vaguely resembling a cross between a centipede and an Ankylosaurus if he is angered. If he is to be further angered in this state, he can additionally transform into an even bigger form resembling a gorilla.

  • All There in the Manual: The official UNMASKED databook notes that Yammy actually put up a fight in his off-screen fight against Byakuya and Kenpachi, leaving them significantly wounded.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Ichigo manages to cut off his right arm in their first fight, but the arm is left intact for him to get it reattached, preventing him from losing his Espada rank like Grimmjow when his arm was cut off and subsequently incinerated by Tosen. When he activates his Resurrección, Byakuya and Kenpachi in particular take turns chopping off fingers and legs, but he heals over once he activates his powered-up form. He's lost the arm again by the time Byakuya and Kenpachi defeat him off-screen.
  • Animal Motifs: His Resurrección resembles a cross between a centipede and an Ankylosaurus. His powered up form resembles an ape.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: He can apparently change size in his sealed form; when Chad sees him again in Las Noches, he notes that he's far larger than he was in the real world. And then there's his release... And his second powerup if that was even possible.
  • Ax-Crazy: Yammy is the Espada that represents wrath, and fittingly, he is violent and bloodthirsty. He isn't truly happy unless he's gleefully slaughtering people en masse. He'll even kill his own allies if that's what it takes to satisfy his bloodlust. He bashes a nurse's head in after she just healed him, brutally assaults Loly and Menoly, who did nothing to antagonize him (Aside from a minor snide retort Menoly makes in the anime), and smashes Rudobon to pieces. Even Nnoitra and Grimmjow had their own (admittedly selfish) reasons for fighting beyond just "kill anything that moves". Also, it's worth noting that his Zanpakuto's name, Ira, is Spanish for "wrath".
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: While he uses his Zanpakuto sometimes, he mostly uses punches and kicks instead when he fights. In his Resurrección, he has no weapons at all, thus he will attack with his fists and legs.
  • Battle Discretion Shot: After seeing Renji, Sado, and Rukia gear up to fight the now-towering Yammy, we switch to... the real world to watch the other Espada get spanked. Months later when we finally return? A Curbstomp Battle has taken place off-screen, with Rukia as the last one standing. The final fight with Kenpachi and Byakuya is also never shown. The anime shows the fight against the former three, but not the latter two.
  • Big Eater: Something of a plot point as his massive eating habits is what helps him power up in preparation for battle.
  • Blatant Lies: When his released state has Rukia in his grip, she attempts to free herself by firing a Kido blast in his face. He starts wailing about how "That really hurt!", though Rukia realizes that he wasn't affected at all. He then claims that the attack hurt him so much that he lost his grip on her, as he throws her as hard as he can to the ground.
  • Blessed with Suck: The databook indicates that the Espada are ranked by Reiatsu, and Yammy's 0 rank comes from having the most when he releases since his power increases whenever he's angry. Unfortunately, this means Yammy has practically none of the special abilities that made the other 9 Espada and Arrancar in general so deadly, and as such Kenpachi and Byakuya are able to defeat him with minimal effort.
  • Breath Weapon: In his Resurrección, he fires his Ceros out of his mouth, and given his size they tend to be some of the biggest in the series.
  • The Brute: Yammy is an unskilled mass of raw temper and rage, who lives for destroying and consuming souls and never develops the spiritual skills that make other Espada and even Fracciónes so dangerous. He is the lowest-ranking member of the Espada until his rage-fueled Resureccion is released, which powers him up to become the strongest, angriest, most violent and most thoughtless of all Espada. As a result, he is viewed as an embarrassment by the Espada and an unworthy opponent by the Soul Reapers.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: Yammy's size and power increase the more he eats, and after being defeated by Yoruichi at the beginning of the Arrancar Arc he spends the rest of it eating constantly until he's bulked up exponentially. Unfortunately, by this point the main characters have also powered up exponentially, so he ultimately proves to be not much more than an annoyance.
  • Catchphrase: Szayelaporro claims that he tends to yell "Suerte!" ("Luck!" in Spanish) when he comes across a good opponent, though Yammy's only seen saying it when he first encountered Ichigo. When keeping him from attacking Ichigo, Ishida turns this on him by quipping "Mala suerte." ("Bad luck." in Spanish) before sending him to the bottom of the tower.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Despite the high strength level of his Resurrección's two forms, he was easily defeated by Kenpachi and Byakuya — who were more intent on fighting each other.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His off-screen fight with Rukia, Chad, and Renji, which he won handily, with Rukia left the only one standing by the time the outcome of the battle is seen, and unable to deal any major damage.
  • Dumb Muscle: Yammy's brash attitude and low intelligence lead to others — namely Kenpachi, Byakuya and Ulquiorra — not taking him seriously despite his massive strength. During their first appearance in Karakura Town, Ulquiorra gets annoyed with Yammy constantly having to ask whether any human with even the slightest bit of spiritual awareness is their target Ichigo because he doesn't bother to check his opponent's power with Pesquisa, and physically berates him for picking a fight with Urahara and Yoruichi without knowing who they are.
  • Fingore: Kenpachi chops off several of his fingers when Yammy tries to punch him to death.
  • Hand Blast: Arrancars can fire projectile called Balas out of their hands. Balas don't possess the amount of destructive power of Ceros but make up for it by being many times faster, and much easier to charge up. Yammy can fire multiple Balas in rapid succession by making a fist and punching forward to release them.
  • Hulking Out: Yammy starts off huge and bulks up enormously in between appearances by gorging himself, growing more powerful as he does so. His two Resurrección forms bulk him up even more, though he's still easily beaten by two Captain-class Soul Reapers.
  • Ignored Enemy: Kenpachi and Byakuya do not respect Yammy as an opponent at all. They seem more interested in fighting each other than they do him, and treat him as nothing more than an annoyance. After they beat him, Byakuya and Kenpachi both describe as a boring enemy, in spite of the additional serious injuries Byakuya and Kenpachi received from Yammy's attacks.
  • Informed Ability: His status as the strongest Espada is this. Whatever Word of God may have to say on the subject he never actually shows himself to be more than a blowhard, as Kenpachi and Byakuya, both already seriously injured from fighting Espada supposedly considerably weaker than him, were able to tear him apart without trying, and he's ultimately defeated off-screen. The additional UNMASKED databook information says they were seriously injured fighting him, but Kenpachi still describes the fight as boring, something he says for any fight where his life is never in danger.
  • Jerkass: Yammy is not a nice person. His introductory scene has him murder several innocent civillians by consumming their souls, because he didn't like how they were looking at him (even though they couldn't even see him). He later proceeds to nearly kill Tatsuki, split Sado's arm in half when he tries to save her, beats Ichigo into a pulp, and punches Inoue across the field. When his arm is reattached by a nurse, Yammy needlessly kills her, and snidely remarks that she didn't do a good job because her body should've turned into a bigger mess. He treats his Fracción, which is basically a pet dog, cruelly, and when he gets bored, he swats Menoly into a wall, and brutalizes Loly without any real reason. When fighting Rukia, he tries to crush her in his hand. Ulquiorra laments that he grows more obnoxious the stronger he gets.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Yammy only cares about crushing and smashing things, so he tends to rush into fights without any plans or strategies. Consequently, this is why he doesn't have a good win record, and is treated like a joke by everyone arround him.
  • Left for Dead: Byakuya and Kenpachi ignored him so much they didn't even bother to finish him off. They just left him bleeding and broken in Hueco Mundo while they went home. He died soon after his sole Fracción (a dog Arrancar) visited him.
  • Licked by the Dog: Yammy is a complete and utter bastard from his introduction to his death, but a small yappy Hollow dog — his Fracción, Kukkapūro — appears to like him. It doesn't entirely count as a Pet the Dog moment, since his entire relationship with it is telling it to shut up, but at least he never seemed to attack it like he did to Roka Paramia — the nurse who reattached his arm.
  • Marathon Boss: While he might not have looked like much, Yammy still fought with Byakuya and Kenpachi for over an hour before his death. In terms of fights based on manga time, he fought the longest out of any antagonist.
  • Mean Boss: How he treats his dog Fracción, Kukkapūro. He tells him to shut up and brutally tosses a bone at him, but that's it. That relationship is the closest thing to a redeeming quality that Yammy has. Nowhere near as benevolent as Starrk and Harribel, but hardly as bad as Barragan and Szayelaporro either.
  • Master of None: Word of God says his powers work something like this; he's the most physically powerful and has the highest physical strength and Spirit Energy of the Espada, explaining the Zero rank, but the tradeoff is that he has no gimmicks whatsoever, having to rely solely on brute strength and the powers all Hollows have. This, of course, makes him a far less effective fighter than any of the others, which leads to him being beaten by Byakuya and Kenpachi when he gets in the way of their duel.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Yammy Zig Zags with this trope. At first it seems he's incredibly weak, then he reveals that he's actually the 0th Espada and technically above Starrk. And he still gets his ass kicked. Then he reveals that he's just not at full power and goes to full power mode... and he still gets his ass kicked. The Espada are ranked according to Spiritual Pressure, and Yammy's is the highest, but he lacks all the extra bells and whistles that make the other Espada so dangerous. The official UNMASKED databook states that despite Byakuya and Kenpachi looking down on him and beating him off-screen, they actually suffered brutal injuries against him, a proof of his Cero Espada rank but Kenpachi describes their fight as boring, a criterion he applies to any fight where his life is not in danger at any point.
"Because of his arrogant attitude, his enemies, like his peers, tend to underestimate him, but he has real power. Fighting at once Byakuya Kuchicki and Kenpachi Zaraki, two great leaders who are the pride of the 13th divisions, he inflicted upon them grave wounds: his strength is worthy of his rank of Espada 0."
  • Our Giants Are Bigger: Yammy is an Arrancar of gigantic stature. He cannibalizes on Hollows to power himself up, and the more he eats, the bigger he gets. When he activates his Ressureccion, he grows to Kaiju-sized. The angrier he gets, the huger he becomes.
  • Powerful, but Incompetent: Espada #10, which makes him the 10th strongest of the entire Hollow species. However, Yammy is The Brute and is exceptionally moronic and short-tempered. When faced with enemies close to his power level, he inevitably takes a beating. It's later revealed that he's actually Espada #0, which means he's actually the strongest of all Hollows...but only in terms of raw spiritual energy. Yammy's ability, "Ira", allows him to Hulk Out as he gets angrier...but that's all. He's still all brute force, and he's still an idiot, which leads to him getting trounced so badly even in his strongest form that the Court Guard Captains who defeated him considered the fight to be "boring as hell". While the other Espada managed to defeat or at least fight on-par with Ichigo and other Captains, the only victories Yammy managed to claim were on people much, much weaker than himself or suffering some sort of handicap, with anyone on an equal scale basically treating him as a Butt-Monkey.
  • Red Herring: He was literally disarmed by Ichigo in his first appearance, is smacked around by Ulquiorra, and generally makes an ass of himself, giving the impression that he isn't all that powerful. Renji and the others feel confident enough to tangle with him and guess what?! Espada #0!
  • Sadist: Big time. He rarely kills his opponents quickly, and is usually shown beating them up or crushing them in his hands first, sporting a huge Slasher Smile as he does so.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Tite Kubo revealed in the MASKED interview that some of the Espada were modeled after the Seven Deadly Sins. Yammy's Resurrección is called "Ira", so he should be Wrath.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: He made sure to call Ulquiorra and Nnoitra garbage after they died. Same with Grimmjow, but he's alive in the manga. Ichigo finds himself disgusted, despite them being his enemies who he doesn't regret cutting down, and noted that Orihime seemed sadder about Ulquiorra's death than his own fellow Espada.
  • A Taste Of His Own Medicine: In his first appearance, he hits Sado so hard that the attack tears the latter's right arm apart...twice. When Ichigo arrives, he cuts Yammy's right arm off as retribution for Sado's arm. This trope is downplayed in the anime, where Sado's arm isn't as injured as it was in the manga, which makes Ichigo's action look rather extreme.
  • Torso with a View: Has a hole right in the center of his gut.
  • The Unfettered: Doesn't care about anything other than bloodshed; humans, soul reapers, and even other Arrancar are just pieces of meat for him to tear apart, nothing more.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: What do you do when a fellow Arrancar nurse just reattached your torn arm? Why, bash her head off intending to smash her up to her feet, of course! The fact that you could only smash her head rather than her entire body clearly means she did a terrible job.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: He has the highest amount of raw power of any of the Espada, but he lacks any of their special tricks like Respira or Starrk's wolves. He doesn't even seem to have Sonido. Thus, he has the top position without being the most effective combatant. An injured Byakuya and Kenpachi are able to kill him despite his raw power, with Kenpachi even calling him "boring".
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: Due to the nature of his Zanpakuto, Ira. The name itself means "anger" in Spanish, and like the Hulk himself, the madder he gets, the larger and stronger he gets.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Yammy has an ability called Gonzui which allows him extract souls from humans and inhale them into his mouth. He demonstrates this by sucking out the souls of all the surrounding bystanders in the vicinity. He remarks they taste disgusting, which Ulquiorra points out should be obvious because they don't possess strong spiritual power. Yammy agrees, but says that he just didn't like the way they were looking at him.
