Class 80
Students scouted and sent invitation letters to attend Hope's Peak as Class 80 shortly before the Tragedy struck. Captured by the Despairs at some point during the Hope's Peak Killing Game. This class ended up on Horizon Station. All of them have some degree on mental instability, and spent time in the station's sanitarium.
- Dysfunction Junction: All of them have some variant of a Dark and Troubled Past, which is why they were locked up in the sanitarium.
- Early-Bird Cameo: Chronologically speaking, simulated versions of themselves appear in A New Hope's simulation arc.
- World of Technicolor Hair: Downplayed compared to some other examples in LOH.
- Hayate, Shuhei and Nico have silver hair and Ringo's is dark blue.
- Unwitting Test Subject: They were all experimented on by Jibo Momota, giving them new talents than what they had before.
Hayate Dorobo/Kisaki
Ultimate Thief
A young silver-haired thief who's successfully stolen (among other things) the Mona Lisa. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders.
He (or rather, his other half Mr. Psycho) is the culprit of the Third Trial. However, he manages to survive the execution and hide in the vents.
He escaped the station, survived the moon, and went on to have a child with Alice.
- Decoy Protagonist: Thanks to a poll, he becomes this. And then Subverted.
- Early-Bird Cameo: In a sense. The last chapter of A New Hope mentions the theft of The Mona Lisa (later found in Hayate's room in Horizon Station).
- Expy: Oddly for a protagonist-type character, he's the one with the darker Split Personality like Toko Fukawa/Genocider Syo. Him having a darker personality whose deeds he doesn't remember harkens a bit towards Hibiki Otonokoji, except it's not influenced directly by someone else.
- The Hero Dies: Thanks to a reader poll, he (or rather, Mr. Psycho) is the third culprit. Except he manages to survive.
- Long-Lost Relative: He's Shuhei's brother.
- Meaningful Name: His name translates to 'Gale thief'.
- Never Learned to Read: Downplayed Trope. He claims his formal education is "rather basic", as he put it.
- Not Quite Dead: Turns out, Mr. Psycho got the talent of Ultimate Anti-Hero, which happens to include a Healing Factor.
- Official Couple: Ends up with Alice. They end up engaged.
- Split Personality: Has one of these: Mr. Psycho.
- Superpowered Evil Side: Mr. Psycho acts like this. He's actually not evil.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He isn't a fan of dogs. His (attempted) execution, naturally, involves being mauled by Rottweilers.
Alice Bailey
Ultimate Veterinarian/unofficially Ultimate Field Medic (also Ultimate Child Caretaker and Ultimate Luck)
A short but well-endowed English girl with a fondness for animals and an unwillingness to take off the black glove on her right hand. Hangs out with Hayate, Shiori, and Akiko the most.
She escaped the station and the Moon Base, and goes on to open an orphanage and have a daughter with Hayate.
- Big Brother Bully: Her older brother saw her as just a liability for not knowing how to fight. It's left her with some esteem issues.
- Break the Cutie: Her past aside, someone tried to drown her the first night on the station. Then her Love Interest turned out to have a Serial Killer half that killed her brother, and then * died in front of her.
- Buxom Beauty Standard: She's noted to be very curvaceous and well-endowed.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Used to be a doctor for Fenrir (even jokingly being called the Ultimate Field Medic), before her entire team (including her brother/only remaining family member) was slaughtered by a man she healed, who turned out to be a psychopathic serial killer. The experience left her unable to work as a doctor due to panicking at the sight of blood.
- Earn Your Happy Ending: After everything thrown at her and her loved ones, she and they manage to escape from space and lead happy lives.
- Friend to All Living Things: Fits this greatly, as shown with her care for animals and people.
- Height Angst: Implied to be an insecurity she deals with as she regularly needs the help of step stools to do basic things like cook.
- Heroic BSoD: Suffers this following Hayate's (apparent) execution. She manages to recover.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Helped the mastermind give birth to Jun, and has no memory of this. Also already came to terms with Hayate/Mr. Psycho, and the fact that her brother was horrible, while in the sanitarium pre-killing game.
- Morality Pet: For Mr. Psycho. And Jun, which is why Hiyoko really wants her dead.
- Nice Girl: Is even understanding of the others reasoning for thinking she's the mole and locking her up.
- Official Couple: Ends up with Hayate. By the end of Sea of Tranquility, they're engaged and expecting a child.
- Their First Time: Apparently had sex (offscreen) with Hayate shortly before he (seemingly) died.
- Trauma Conga Line: Her time in Final Horizon. She's nearly killed on her first night there, sees her Love Interest die (after he turns out to be the guy that traumatized her years ago), gets accused of being a spy and locked up in a sanitarium (which she fears) and looked on with suspicion even from a girl that has a crush on her, and nearly dies several more times along the way. And that's on top of the usual business of watching her friends die in a killing game.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Is nervous around blood. And sanitariums.
Ringo Takagami
Ultimate Marksman/Hitman and Ultimate Trapmaker
An anti-social young man with exceptional skill with guns. He's determined to win the Killing Game his own way.
Is the victim of the fourth case, courtesy on a summoned monster clawing the effects of cyanide poisoning into his throat.
- Asshole Victim: Galexialyn has no qualms about exchanging his life for Shiori's.
- Blood Knight: Actively seeks about hurting and killing other people because it satisfies him.
- Challenge Seeker: As a professional hitman, he makes it a point to hone his skills in shooting and trapmaking to sate his own desires.
- Establishing Character Moment: When the first motive is announced in which a man who kills a woman and vice versa is allowed to leave scot-free, Ringo takes up his gun and aims at over Shiori with no remorse over his face.Ringo: (gun aimed at Shiori) If there's no trial to be held, what's to stop me from pulling this trigger?
- Expy: His general sociopathic tendencies, his willingness to play out the Killing Game, and how he sees everything as a way of honing his skills harken to Kazuo Kiriyama (specifically, the film version), except he can actually talk here. Not to mention his expertise with guns, which is what Kiriyama uses quite often.
- Hate Sink: Generally unlikeable and despised throughout the story.
- Jerkass: Consistently acts this way throughout the game.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Kills Ichiro with his trap but gets Off on a Technicality, which is what happens to him. To specify, Galexialyn summons a monster who kills him, but since he didn't die at her hands, she gets off scot-free.
- Mad Bomber: Sets several bombs up in the Birthday arc, apparently hoping to get everyone else killed so he could escape.
- Off on a Technicality: How he gets away with setting up the first death. Also how his killer gets away with killing him.
- One Degree of Separation: He worked for the Kuzuryu Clan in the past. It was he, not Ultimate Despair, that wiped the clan out when he decided to leave after the Tragedy hit. His only regret is not getting to kill Fuyuhiko and Natsumi, or testing himself against Peko in the process.
- Recurring Element: He's the antagonistic character cast in the same mold as Byakuya, Nagito, and Kokichi, but lacks any of their redeeming qualities (doesn't get Character Development; doesn't operate on Blue-and-Orange Morality while still approaching some noble cause; and isn't ambiguous in their deeds).
- The Sociopath: He doesn't have any Dark and Troubled Past to justify his actions, he just prefers practicing his skills on the living. Jibo Momota notes that he sees everything (working for and fighting against the Yakuza, the killing game) as just another way of honing his skills. Even before the Killing Game started, he wanted to test himself on a station full of Ultimates. Jibo was okay with this.
- Shooting Lessons From Your Parents: His father, being a soldier, was the one who first gave him exposure to firearms.
- Token Evil Teammate: Serves as this for the story. He's even a bigger threat than the Mastermind at times.
- Trap Master: Is good at making these. It's his second talent.
- Would Hit a Girl: Had no problems with holding Shiori at gunpoint, threatening to kill her if it meant he could leave early. He only doesn't bother because he wants things to be interesting.
- Would Hurt a Child: Has no qualms about holding Jun at gunpoint, intending to use him against the Mastermind. Said Mastermind's bat takes exception to this.
Shiori Ayashima
Ultimate Witch (and Ultimate Hope)
A cute-but-quiet young girl with an interest in magic. She becomes good friends with Alice, Hayate, and Galexialyn.
She escaped the station and moon, along with Mr. BonBon.
- Animal Companion: Mr. BonBon the rabbit.
- Break the Cutie:
- Someone (other than Ringo, this time) poisoned her at her birthday party. Thankfully, she lives.
- Nearly hits when she sees what's left of Akiko and Akiho. Xia is able to bring her back from that.
- And then her best friend Xia got executed for a crime she didn't commit. That seemed to do it (briefly).
- The Cutie: See this image.
- Cute Witch: Fits this trope with her looks and personality (also see above).
- Dark and Troubled Past: Even she has this: After her cat was killed by a boy that pretended to befriend her, she used black magic (which always comes at a high price) to get revenge. The end result; the boy died in a car crash, but her parents split up and her mentor died.
- Despair Event Horizon: Crashes through it hard when Xia is killed. Alice manages to talk her out of it back to Hope Bringer status.
- Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: So far it is only implied that she is the former (unlike Himiko). It later turns out that the actually can use real magic and she demonstrates it by growing a sunflower in her hand.
- Nice Girl: Is very much this. It helps her befriend abrasive people like Galexialyn and even Rene from Class 80-B.
- Only Friend: For Galexialyn. Upgraded to (apparently) Platonic Life-Partners after her birthday.
- Shout-Out: Possibly. She mentions her only real friend as a child was a cat named Noir.
Galexialyn Chijimatsu
Ultimate Occultist (and Ultimate Alchemist)
A mysterious person with a gender that's difficult to discern. They have a creepy aura about them and no real knowledge about the concept of 'having friends'. Bonds a little with Shiori, though.
Is technically the culprit of the fourth trial, having used magic to save Shiori at the cost of Ringo's life. However, since she used a summoned beast to do the actual killing, she isn't executed.
She escaped the station, but ultimately (technically) died on the Moon.
- Ambiguous Gender: though they offer people to call them Galex or Xialyn depending on what they recognize Galexialyn as. Though as Shiori finds out, due to the room numbers Galexialyn is a girl.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Has done something in the past that she considers worse than Sayaka's past actions. What hasn't been explained yet, but she's certain that Shiori and the others would break ties with her in a heartbeat if the truth came out. What that is gets revealed during the fourth trial: She leads a dark cult, Whispers of the Damned, that has been responsible for multiple deaths.
- Feels No Pain: Is incapable of feeling pain, or much of anything at all, due to damaged nerve endings. In her search for a 'cure', she ended up forming a murderous cult.
- Huge Schoolgirl: The only one taller than Nico.
- Licking the Blade: With a sacrificial dagger. Can get away with it due to not feeling pain.
Shuhei Kisaki
Ultimate Scientist/Analyst
A tall young man with an interest in science (specifically Forensics). Is pre-Killing Game friends with Giselly and Miyaki (from Sea of Tranquility).
He escaped the station and the moon.
- Atheist: Admits to not believing in higher powers or an afterlife.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Lost his sister years ago.
- Deuteragonist: Becomes more like this as the story goes on.
- Official Couple: Surprisingly ends up with Natalie over the course of his second game.
- Secret-Keeper: Knew Hayate was still alive (somehow). Also knew he could get Alice out of the Sanitarium room through the vent.
- Social Darwinist: Averted Trope. He objects, when Ringo brings up the "Survival of the fittest"-concept. Jibo Momota calls him on his morals 'holding him back'.
- What You Are in the Dark: Hiyoko makes him an offer to betray Alice in exchange for a chance to revive his sister. He refuses.
Giselly Lutzen
Ultimate Hacker (and Ultimate Stealth Operate)
A Japanese/Filipino girl with a rather sour disposition. Knows Shuhei from before the Killing Game.
She was the mole, having been forced to try to kill Alice in exchange for the destruction of the Despair computer virus she was forced to make. Was the final (student) victim of the killing game.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Was pushed and abused by her parents from an early age, apparently in a manner similar to Nagisa. It left her unwilling to be close to others.
- Expy: Genius hacker affiliated with a rogue group and embroiled in a bigger conspiracy? Are we talking about Giselly or Sombra?
- Inspector Javert: One of the most convinced that Alice is the mole. Because she was the mole trying to shift blame.
- Love Confession: Seemed about ready to give one to Shuhei, but was interrupted. It was actually that she was the mole. Does have an actual confession prior to her execution, though.
- The Quiet One: In the beginning, she doesn't introduce herself and Raef does it for her instead.
Hikaru Barloc
Ultimate Event Coordinator and (apparently) Ultimate Cook
A young man with great skill at organizing celebrations. Befriends Rei early on.
One of the victims of the third trial, after causing the fatal events in the first place.
- #1 Dime: His event planner. It's the last thing he has of his family (specifically his father) and he's very protective of it. He ultimately snaps when it goes missing (though the hallucinations of his dead Love Interest egging him on to violence didn't help).
- An Arm And Aleg: Gets his arms torn off by Mr. Psycho.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Starts hallucinating Rei due to the third motive.
- Cope by Pretending: Though his past of nearly killing a mob boss was never that much explained, he simply shrugs it off and reminds himself that indeed, everyone has their demons.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Nearly killed a mob boss in a blind rage once. Never told anyone that before Rei.
- Flat Character: Other than his backstory and his OCD, there isn't really that much to say about him; how he got his talent, his life outside of it, etc.
- Ship Tease: With Rei. Right before she becomes a culprit.
- Sympathetic Murder Backstory: Downplayed. He nearly killed a mob boss because he was coerced to do it. Though he didn't pursue it, he still resents it to this day.
- Team Chef: Due to his other talent.
Rei Makoto
Ultimate Violinist
A beautiful violinist with a hidden dark side to her. She befriends Nico during the first day on the station.
Is the culprit of the second trial, having been coerced into killing by Raef (then killing him in turn).
- Abusive Parents: Both of her parents abused her for her talent until Mr. Psycho killed them.
- Cynicism Catalyst: Her otherwise brutal execution is what drives Hikaru to become a bit more irrational, if not outright murderous.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Was pushed by her parents to the point she was glad to see Mr. Psycho kill them.
- Expy: Being a person who was taken away from their life of disgrace by the alter-ego of the protagonist figure sounds similar to Hajime Makunouchi, whose life was turned around by the appearance of Utsuro, much like how Rei's life turned for the better when she met Mr. Psycho.
- Half the Man He Used to Be: Her execution.
- Kill the Ones You Love: Befriends Nico, but Raef coerces her to kill her. It backfires on him.
- Ship Tease: With Hikaru.
- The Unreveal: What exactly her other talent was is never stated, but seemed to be something involving manipulation and/or seduction.
Charles Stark
Ultimate Survivalist/Lifeguard
A heavily bearded teen who's good at survival. Gets along well with Nico.
One of the Third Trial victims.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Was the Sole Survivor of a plane crash on a deserted island. He was forced into cannibalism to survive.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Gave the only remaining spacesuit to Sayaka when they were trapped in the decompression room, resulting in him being a victim of the third case. She dies soon afterwards.
- Important Haircut: Shaves his beard after Nico's death.
- Lethal Chef: He has to defy this trope due to his talent, but he's no Supreme Chef by any means.
- Ship Tease: With Nico. Naturally, he's the one to find her dead body.
Nico Bessho
Ultimate Guesser
A silver-haired girl with her own YouTube channel and an amazing ability for guessing developments, having once guessed the ending of a five-book series shortly after the first book was published. Would prefer to be known as an Educated Guesser. She quickly befriends Rei during the first few days on the station.
The first victim of the second case.
- Blue Is Heroic: She mainly dresses in shades of blue and her guessing talent saves the group in case 1. She also doesn't falter when calling out Jibo Momota for his madness.
- Expy: Person with a powerful talent that can be used to determine the culprits far easier? Dying in the second case of the game? Said death brought about by her trying to reach out to her killer? Are we talking about Nico or Kokoro Mitsume? Oddly though, there's also another Ultimate Psychologist.
- Five-Second Foreshadowing: Guesses Hayate's name, their presence in the killing game and that Monokuma had weapons for each student this way.
- The Fool: Defied Trope. She doesn't like to have her abilities to be associated with mere luck and aims to be the Ultimate Educated Guesser instead.
- Huge Schoolgirl: With 15 years, she is among the youngest students, but is the second-tallest girl.
- Killed Off for Real: As one of the victims of the Second Trial.
- Loophole Abuse: Looks trough the rules for ways to do this early on.
- Night Swim Equals Death: The last place Charles saw her before her Death was the pool area. And it was right before nighttime.
- Ship Tease: With Charles.
- Shout-Out: to NicoB and his infamous plot-guessing abilities (albeit Japanese and Gender Flipped).
- Story-Breaker Power: Her guessing abilities are the reason the group found out that Aiko technically killed himself. She becomes one of the victims in chapter 11. In A New Hope, her simulation is even aware that she isn't real.
- The Unreveal: what her extra talent was (clairvoyance, maybe?).
Akiho Tenryuu
Ultimate Psychologist (former Ultimate Basketball Player)
An energetic girl with more personalities than there should be, she has a rather sporty look for someone with her talent. There's a reason or two for that.
Blown up shortly before the final day on the station.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents essentially sold her to Jibo Momota, who in turn gave her multiple personalities (at least one of which was a Despair) as an experiment in talent. Then he altered her memory so she thought she was in a car crash.
- Inspector Javert: To Alice, as one of the people certain she's the mole. To the point of trying to kill her.
- Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Decides to kill Alice (the supposed mole) so as to at least know they wouldn't get away with everything.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Goes on a bit of one when Ringo starts trying to kill people. It comes to an abrupt end when she and the others find him already dead.
- Ship Tease: With Wei.
- Split Personality: Posseses an unknown amount of these. At least eight, though she doesn't know about the last one.
Wei Yan
Ultimate Kenpo Master (and Ultimate Counselor)
A perpetually shirtless man with long hair and self defense skills. Good friends with Akiho.
He escaped the station.
- An Arm and a Leg: Loses part of his left leg to one of Ringo's bombs in chapter 22. He's less than happy about it.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Lost his mentor during the Tragedy. Went on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against Ultimate Despair, killing a few despairs* in the process.
- Inspector Javert: Becomes a bit of this towards Alice near the end. He got over it.
- Mellow Fellow: Has absolutely no problem with Akiho's radical personality switches. Eventually leads to ship teasing.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: All his scenes.
Akiko Williams
Ultimate Jeweler/Geologist
A Japanese/Welsh girl with a standoffish disposition. She befriends Alice over the course of the game.
Blown up shortly before the final day on the station.
- Closet Key: Apparently first realized her feelings for Alice after giving her CPR.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Her mother died in a car crash. She blames herself for inadvertently distracting her mother from the road.
- Tomboy: Self-described, with the short hair and visible muscles to match. Dips into Butch Lesbian territory a bit.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Is on the receiving end of this from Shiori, over her refusal to believe that Alice might be innocent.
Raef Hyzaki
Ultimate Trickster
A mysterious individual with fox ears on their head. Befriends Hayate early on.
One of the victims of the Second Trial, after trying to manipulate the culprit into doing his bidding.
- Ambiguous Gender: Hayate couldn't figure out whether he is a boy or a girl and decided not to bother to reassure himself, however in the same vein as Galexialyn, it's revealed rather quickly that he was born male. However, he confirms that he has no specific identity.
- Ambiguously Gay: Seemed to like Hayate. Nothing comes of it.
- Animal-Eared Headband: Raef is depicted wearing a fox headband, fitting for his cunning personality.
- Animal Motifs: A fox, which according to the character's creator is their spirit animal. Fitting.
- Back Story: Raef grew up in a orphanage. Which gave him a sense of Abandonment Issues when other children left and he stayed behind. It left him disconnected from others.
- Cunning Like a Fox
- Expy: Seems to be based on Kokichi, tricking the other participants into doing his bidding. Not to mention they're both in the same universe. Unfortunately, he is killed after an unsuccessful attempt to do so.
- Hates Being Touched: Doesn't like physical contact. Saionji and Momota tormented him on the fact.
- Killed Off for Real: As one of the victims of the Second Trial.
Ichiro Aiko (real name Jacob Johnstone)
Ultimate Football Star/Strong-Man
An American football player. Changed his name and left America after his father succumbed to cancer. Has anger issues and an unwillingness to surpass his father.
The first victim of the Horizon Station Killing Game.
- Accidental Murder: Inflicts this on himself.
- Alliterative Name: His real name, Jacob Johnstone
- Expy: His fate is similar to Mikako Kurokawa, both already dead but still press on with their execution due to rule compliance.
- Flat Character: Given little characterization, even after his death.
- Super-Strength: Got it when he got an extra talent.
- We Hardly Knew Ye: Is the first to die.
Students scouted and sent invitation letters to attend Hope's Peak as Class 80 shortly before the Tragedy struck. Captured by the Despairs at some point during the Hope's Peak Killing Game. This class ended up on Tranquility Base.
- Early-Bird Cameo: Chronologically speaking, simulated versions of themselves appear in A New Hope's simulation arc.
- World of Technicolor Hair:
- Fukuya's hair is dark blue, Evan has electric blue and sea foam green highlights in his hair, Lee has grayish violet hair, Anh's is ghost white and Hikari's is a white-ish blonde.
Fukuya Onsuki (real name Jason Carter)
Ultimate Gymnast (actually Ultimate Strategist)
A clearly caucasian man with a Japanese name. There is a reason for that. Currently bunked with Evan.
He escaped the moon.
- Covered with Scars: His body is covered in scars due to being on the receiving end of his training.
- Dark and Troubled Past: His parents worked for the U.S. government and he helped on classified incidents as well. After a few years passed, his parents were killed by foreign assailants.
- Heroic BSoD: Briefly when realizing Evan died . . . after he had slept with his killer impersonating him.
- Pair the Spares: Implied with Juzo.
- Secret Identity: Jason was believed to be in danger, so he got a new identity as Fukuya Onsuki, Ultimate Gymnast.
- Straight Gay: Describes himself as such, and clearly appreciates Evan's arms.
Kakeru Lehrer
Ultimate Playwright
A Japanese/German playwright. Currently bunked with Dylan. Not actually the real culprit of trial 1.
He escaped the moon.
- Ambiguously Evil: Turns out he was just a Red Herring.
- Hidden Depths: Despite his asocial demeanor, he cares about Misuzu when she breaks down into tears when thinking of Ren's death, and calls out Zalicka for seemingly not caring.
- No Social Skills: He admits to this and its why he buries himself in work.
- Token Evil Teammate: Subverted. He’s not evil.
- The Workaholic: Gets so caught up in writing his manuscripts that he sometimes gets no sleep.
Alex Alvarez
Ultimate DJ
A Belgian who has DJ'd with Sayaka and Ibuki in the past. Currently bunked with Tae Min.
He escaped the moon.
- Alliterative Name: Alex Alvarez.
- Breaking Old Trends: He's a musically-inclined Ultimate who survives the Killing Game.
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Begins following after Tae Min and trying to keep him under control, and making apologies to others on his behalf.
- The Generic Guy: There's not much about him, other than being a DJ. He is fairly average, compared to the rest of the students.
Lee Kamao
Ultimate Kickboxer
Filipino/Korean. Flusters easily. Currently bunked with Anh.
He escaped the moon.
- Birds of a Feather: He and Wei have been old friends before the Killing Games started.
- Ship Tease: Gets a bit from Mallory, Natalie and Lia (mainly Mallory before she dies). Ultimately gets together with Lia.
Anh Nguyen
Ultimate Lute Player
Vietnamese. Currently bunked with Lee.
Is killed in the fifth case.
- Bilingual Bonus: Says a few lines of (unsurprisingly) Vietnamese from time to time.
- Ship Tease: With Zalicka. He at one point calls her 'beautiful' in Vietnamese. Sadly, he dies before they could do anything about it.
Ren Seishin
Ultimate Voice Actor
A Japanese boy who doesn't like to use his real voice. Currently bunked with Shohei.
Dies as a victim of the fourth case.
- Dark and Troubled Past: His mother abused him both physically and verbally until he grew to hate his voice.
- Heroic Self-Deprecation: Really doesn't like his own voice, finding it 'disgusting'.
- Man of a Thousand Voices: His Ultimate talent is voice acting, and he can freely change his voice. Unfortunately, he dislikes his natural voice.
- Shout-Out: Literally every time he speaks, given his tendency to use character voices.
Shohei Maeda
Ultimate Pyrotechnician
Japanese. Currently bunked with Ren.
He was one of the two victims in the Second Trial, killed by strangulation.
- Death by Irony: He was killed because he was on patrol trying to prevent a murder and stumbled onto one.
- Flat Character: Wasn't as prominently covered as some of the other characters.
- He Knows Too Much: Stumbled across Amare while she was killing Hikari. Dylan kept him from doing anything about it.
- Properly Paranoid: He takes incredible precautions to protect himself and others. His caution is at time overzealous. And it still doesn't work.
Rene Musil
Ultimate Exterminator
An incredibly cynical Czech Republican with a severely suspicious disposition. Currently bunked with Mikhail.
Voted as the culprit of the First Trial. His knowledge that the Green House door was chained despite never seeing the door itself seemed to indicate it was the correct decision. Turns out it wasn't.
- The Cynic: His key trait. Off the back, he is introduced as someone who's quick to denounce any form of "weirdness" be it Tae Min's antics or Mallory's quirks. He's also someone who is inclined to killing someone to escape, as much as everyone suggests otherwise.
- Fatal Flaw: Rene's stubborn and impulsive nature is his biggest flaw. Not only does it make him unlikable to the others, but also causes his death, since he was too stubborn to explain his own alibi and went into a Villainous Breakdown instead, and he would've gotten a second chance had he been able to restrain himself.
- Frame-Up: Why there wasn't evidence of the message he got about the chains.
- I Never Said It Was Poison: He knew that the Green House door was chained despite never being there, so he was found suspicious and ultimately voted guilty.
- Irony: Repeatedly mentioned how he thought Mallory would be the first to die. She outlasts him, and he dies in a trial where she was a major suspect (a fact he made a point to bring up repeatedly).
- Self-Harm: A practitioner, as his scarred arms can attest.
- Token Evil Teammate: Looks like he might become this. Sorta subverted when he dies early on, and apparently wasn't even evil (but was a jerk).
- Villainous Breakdown: He doesn't take it well when the others suspect him as the murderer. Rather than trying to prove his innocence, he ends up looking even more suspicious by stubbornly refusing to own up, saying "don't you dare vote for me" and angrily insults Mallory and Zalicka by calling them "the damn air head" and "the snake bitch", respectively. Before Rene is executed, he yells that the others are all murderers for convicting him to death. Of course, it's hard to blame him, considering that he may have been an innocent person who couldn't handle the situation.
Natalie Sheldon
Ultimate Pilot
A foul-mouthed American/Canadian girl who always speaks her mind (and flirts with the guys). Currently bunked with Lia.
She escaped the moon.
- Ambiguous Criminal History: Apparently, when the other students had their secrets exposed, she states that she used to smuggle drugs for money across the Canadian-American border. The deeper circumstances aren't too prominent.
- Expy: Seems to be one for Miu, as the dress sense, dirty mouth, and sex-based comments can attest to. The alcoholism, however, is new.
- Incompatible Orientation: Thinks Fukuya's hot. He's not interested.
- Shipper on Deck: Openly admits to playing matchmaker to Mallory and Lee.
- Ship Tease: Hooks up, somewhat surprisingly, with Shuhei. They remain together after returning to Earth.
- Tsundere: Despite her abrasive personality, and claiming to not be able to stand her, Natalie still shows genuine care for Mallory and lies to cover for Lee (who likes Mallory).
Lia Almeda
Ultimate Volcanologist
A bespectacled Portuguese girl with red hair. Currently bunked with Natalie.
She escaped the moon.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Has some sort of secret that visibly upsets her when Monokuma threatens to reveal it.
- I Am Not Pretty: Feels this way after comparing herself to some of the other girls in the hot spring. Lee is quick to offer a strong disagreement.
- Ship Tease: Has some with Lee. They get together.
Zalicka Hajjar
Ultimate Snake Charmer
An Egyptian woman. Has two pet snakes named Seath (a black scaled cobra) and Veeza (a regular cobra). Currently bunked with Hikari.
She escaped the moon, as did Seath and Veeza.
- Animal Companion: Her snakes serve as this for her. Even in someone else's body. She considers them her children.
- Break the Haughty: Zalicka spends most of the game being cold and unfriendly, but begins to soften when Jason talks to her. She is broken even more when she finds out about Anh's death.
- Loners Are Freaks: Mentions not having many friends given her talent. Did care about her roommate though.
- Ship Tease: With Anh. She caught what he called her beautiful in Vietnamese.
Choko Shinsato
Ultimate Prosecutor
A Japanese girl with a bob haircut and a hand puppet. Currently bunked with Misuzu.
She escaped the moon.
- Break the Cutie: She is extremely upset over the aftermath of the third trial.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: An effective prosecutor. Still uses a toy for her job.
- Dark and Troubled Past: When she was younger she was held at gunpoint in a courtroom by a man. Her father was killed in the ensuing chaos by Choko accidentally firing the gun. Her mother killed the man who took her hostage and covered up Choko's involvement.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Her feelings while confessing to Misuzu that it was her that killed her father.
- Shout-Out: Her Dark and Troubled Past has similar elements to Miles Edgeworth's. Except unlike with Miles, Choko is (apparently) the one who killed her dad, not a serial killer, while Miles only thought he did but there was a different killer the whole time.
- Sidekick: Tae Min later makes her his sidekick after she sees his face.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Is the one who gave Dylan the scoutbook that let him be able to frame Galexialyn.
Misuzu Shiina
Ultimate Mortician
A Japanese girl with a rather pleasant disposition. Currently bunked with Choko.
She escaped the moon.
- Be Yourself: A supporter of this, as her talks with Ren show.
- Genki Girl: Has shades of this with her energetic attitude.
- Gratuitous Latin: Has a moment during the first night.Memento Mori. It's a Latin saying that means remember that you will die, cool right? But if I had to add my own personal touch to it, I'd tell you ne obliviscaris ridere. It means don't forget to smile.
- Idiot Hair: A halo-shaped one to add to her angel motif.
- Nice Girl: Is a genuinely nice young lady with an optimistic bend to life.
- Only Friend: Seems to be this to Kakeru. They start a relationship by the end.
- Sticky Fingers: Likes to "collect" things. She managed to steal Tae Min's bunny helmet for some roleplaying and has also once stolen Strawbear from her friend Choko.
- Symbolic Wings: Wears a white backpack with angel wings, which compliments her bright, optimistic personality.
- Verbal Tic: Often begins her sentences with "My my".
Mallory Walsh
Ultimate Gardener
A narcoleptic Irish girl who loves to hug. Was homeschooled. Currently bunked with Miyaki.
A victim of the third trial.
- Break the Cutie: Sees one of her friends die the second day in. It worsens when Dylan attacks her, and by the time he performs the final blow she's reduced to a sobbing wreck, begging for her family.Mallory: M-Mama... P-Papa... I-I'm scared. I don't want to die.
- Cuddle Bug: One of her defining traits is this, as she demonstrates to Fukuya.Fukuya: More like Ultimate Grappler. God, she's stronger than she looks.
- Cuteness Overload: Her first reaction to seeing Monokuma? Run up to the teddy bear and hug it excessively. She's why the 'don't harm Monokuma' rule includes a 'or touch' in it for this game.
- Go Out with a Smile: Mallory's body is found with a strangely peaceful smile, which turns out to be a Glasgow Grin carved by Dylan.
- Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Remains happy throughout, and has enough innocence to not get most innuendo.
- Kill the Cutie: Is the victim of the third case.
- Nature Lover: Has an affinity towards nature, and would prefer it over the grey, steely area that is the Tranquility Moon Base.
- Nice Girl: Seems to be this. And actually is. She at least is innocent/oblivious to Natalie's sex-related comments.
- Standard Bleeding Spots: Was found stabbed with a dagger in her breast.
Miyaki Hanao
Ultimate Circus Performer
A blue-attired girl and friend of a couple of Horizon Station occupants, as well as Shuhei from Class 80-A. Currently bunked with Mallory.
A victim of the First Case.
- Expy: Being a positive-thinking blonde as well as one of the people dying first evokes Kiyoka Maki.
- Flat Character: Other than some other details given from other characters, not that much is known about her personal history other than some character traits.
- The Lost Lenore: Becomes something of one for Ren. She's also this to Shuhei after he learns about her death.
- Slashed Throat: What kills her. courtesy of the Psychopath.
- We Hardly Knew Ye: Dies without that much information provided about her, such as family history and many others.

She was the culprit of the Second Trial, after her roommate talked her into it.

- Huge Schoolgirl: Is the tallest of the female students.
Tae Min Park
Ultimate Hero
A Korean boy and 'superhero', one who seems to have actual superpowers. Goes by the alias Oki Tokki, and wears a rabbit helmet. Currently bunked with Alex.
He escaped the moon.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Literally wears a helmet shaped like a bunny.
- Cloud Cuckoo Lander: He is very flamboyant but socially awkward boy who believes he is an all-powerful hero. Given his powers, he isn't completely crazy.
- Expy: His rabbit motif and social awkwardness slightly make him one to Izuku Midoriya.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Willing to pull one to the Despair broadcast, but ultimately survives.
- Large Ham: He's a very bombastic and loud young man.
- The Nicknamer: He's come up with "superhero codenames" for his friends. Oki Sonyeo (Choko), Green Thumb (Mallory) and Soundwave (Alex).
- Punny Name: His Hero name sounds like okey-dokey.
- Shout-Out: His uniform is reminiscent of Kamen Rider, with his rabbit motif echoing Build.
- Socially Awkward Hero: He's a super hero that's socially awkward.
- Super-Strength: Can crush chains in his bare hands.
- The Nick Namer: Gives out alias for his friends or if he has heard someone being referred to by a nickname before.
Sierra White
Ultimate Prodigy New Ultimate Phantom Thief
A black-haired American/Japanese girl who isn't talented in any one specific thing, but is good at learning things fast. The youngest girl in the cast at 14 (she skipped a grade or two). Currently bunked with Mirielle (who keeps flirting her in her Lupin persona).
She escaped the moon and disappears as the latest Ultimate Phantom Thief.
- Brainy Brunette: Is actually quite smart, as shown by observations she makes following the first trial, including figuring out who the culprit was in the second trial. Not that she thinks much of it.
- Cowardly Lion: Is rather timid and shy, but still soldiers on in the face of adversity. Zalicka even comments on it during the second investigation, when she personally checks if it's possible to climb out of the second-story window onto a dumpster (it is).
- Jack of All Trades: Her talent makes her this, in that she can learn things twice as fast compared to other people. She does have a little issue with it, claiming that she's nothing special amidst the more flamboyant and unique pool of talents surrounding her.
- Luminescent Blush: Gets this a lot around Mirielle/Lupin (mainly when being hit on). And when getting complimented in general.
- Nice Girl: Is a generally nice young girl.
- Passing the Torch: After Mirielle's death, she is made Arsene Lupin the 8th.
- Relationship Upgrade: Gets with Mirielle shortly before the body switching. It doesn't last.
Mirielle DuMonde
Ultimate Phantom Thief
A French girl with a nervous disposition. She has a more extroverted (and flirtatious) persona of Arsene Lupin the 7th. Currently bunked with Sierra (whom Lupin keeps flirting with; no word on Mirielle's thoughts on the matter).
Is stabbed to death in the fifth case.
- Expy: She's basically a Phantom Thief version of Murakumo, both being people who don masks, have a different, more outwardly persona with their masks on, and becoming nervous wrecks without them. The persona Murakumo exudes is a more condescending one, while Mirielle exhibits that of an extravagant Frenchwoman.
- Leg Focus: The narration makes a point of mentioning her long legs.
- Relationship Upgrade: Gets with Sierra shortly before the body switching.
- Shout-Out: To Arsène Lupin.
- Split Personality: Averted. Lupin is a separate being altogether, residing inside her mask. Alongside all previous Lupins, as it turns out.
Evan Drakon
Ultimate Mythologist
A muscly Greek with an interest in mythology. Currently bunked with Fukuya/Jason.
Died in Dylan's body in the fourth case, having been brainwashed to kill Ren in his own body in a Mutual Kill.
- The Big Guy: Downplayed depending on the art used for his interpretation, though it's still mentioned across the story.
- Dark and Troubled Past: His mother died in childbirth and was raised by his older brother, sister, and grandmother. His father was an assassin and he wanted his children to follow in his footsteps. But when Evan's siblings didn't fulfill their father's expectations, they were killed by him. Evan's initiation (at 11 years old) was to kill a family without hesitation. His father threatened to kill his grandmother in order to make him colder, so Evan could do what needed to be done. Evan instead killed his father in a cold rage.
- Only Friend: Seems to be becoming one for Hikari (with some Ship Tease). Then that ship sunk when Hikari dies.
- Trauma Conga Line: Had a horrible childhood, got stuck in a killing game, saw his Love Interest killed, had the memorial he set up for the fallen desecrated (with the nicest girl in the group killed in the middle of it), gets stuck in another (much weaker compared to his own) body while his own body dies (twice, actually), and then discovers that he's not even a natural human, but an artificial one created by a Mad Scientist with a fake talent and made up backstory (including the aforementioned childhood) who probably hasn't existed before the killing game started. Finally capping it off, the following day he becomes a murder victim (which, at the least, finally put him out of further misery).
- Actually, he died in Dylan's body, and missed the 'his life was a lie' reveal. Dylan did probably accurately portray how he would've reacted though.
Hikari Kurohashi
Ultimate Medium
A Japanese albino. Can sometimes channel the dead. Currently bunked with Zalicka.
She was one of the two victims in the Second Trial, killed by strangulation.
- Blessed with Suck: Can only feel/channel the dead's emotions, not any messages they might convey. Unfortunately not helpful in determining killers. Also leaves her feeling isolated from her peers.
- Ship Tease: With Evan whom she kisses on the cheek at one point. And then Ship Sinking.
Mikhail Mischak
Ultimate Taoist
A Ukrainian man who prefers to keep the peace and protecting others. Currently bunked with Rene.
One of the two victims of the First Trial.
- Actual Pacifist: Refused to fight, even when someone was murdered in front of him.
- Alliterative Name: Mikhail Mischak.
- Blood from the Mouth: Courtesy of the pesticide pumped into the room.
- Noodle Incident: Mentions something about his past that somehow disturbs him, but's it's never revealed.

Dylan Rufheiser
Ultimate Diplomat/Ultimate Psychopath
A guy from Cuba. The youngest boy in the group at 14. Currently bunked with Kakeru. The actual culprit of the third and first trials, and had a hand in the second.
Fakes his death and impersonates Evan in Ren's body following the fourth case, then kills and is killed in the fifth case.
- Ax-Crazy: His true personality.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Dresses rather casually for a diplomat. Apparently, it helps him interact with others back home.
- Blood Knight: According to his real personality, killing others satiates him.
- Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Whereas Ringo merely served as a lone wolf not in league with the Mastermind, Dylan is the attack dog of the mastermind.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Willingly used his position to spy on other countries. Most likely not true and his true memories are much darker.
- Devil in Plain Sight: He's good at acting like an innocent by putting on his Mask of Sanity, giving him plenty of opportunities to spill blood.
- The Dragon: Serves as this (or at least a semi-loyal attack dog) to Yukiko.
- Expy: He's a young Ultimate with a slightly passive talent who has a secret hitch for murdering people and being a sadistic psychopath, while also hindering the heroes' chances of survival. He's eerily similar to Kanade Otonokoji.
- Hard Head: Dylan got hit with an oar by the second killer and was knocked unconscious.
- Hate Sink: When his true colors are revealed, he is loathed and feared by the others.
- It Amused Me: Why he killed Mallory when she found him wrecking the memorial (that part was just due to his own atheist views). He even expresses to Monokuma that killing others turns him on.
- Kids Are Cruel: Dylan is the youngest boy at 14, and eventually turns out to be a sadistic psychopath.
- Killed Off for Real: Finally dies when his boss stabs him in the back (well, the eye) in the fifth case.
- Mask of Sanity: With which he fooled everyone.
- Red and Black and Evil All Over: He has a black and red color scheme with his hair and clothes. Going by his true personality, it fits really well.
- Sadist: Gets enjoyment out of destroying the shrine and killing the other students.
- Token Evil Teammate: The actual one, as a high-functioning psychopath.

After being killed in the Hope's Peak Killing Game, Sayaka was somehow revived (leading to her ghost disappearing from Makoto). She was found frozen by the students of Class 80-A during the third day of the Horizon Station Killing Game and awoken, joining the game herself.
She's tragically killed off again, killed by a bomb implanted in her neck by the Mastermind.
- Back from the Dead: Somehow revived (with scars from her murder) and cryogenically frozen on Horizon Station. She doesn't get off the station alive.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Finally elaborated on from New Hope: she allowed some 'horrible dirt' concerning a rival to become public knowledge, with the girl in question (someone she'd known for years) being driven to hang herself as a result.
- Expy: Her role is quite similar to Teruya Otori, being a person from their entries' previous Killing Games and having undergone Character Development. Both also die in their respective sequels.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has scars from her death in the iron maiden.
- Your Head Asplode: How Hiyoko kills her.
The Horizon Station Mastermind
Ultimate Traditional Japanese Dancer
The one controlling Monokuma in the killing game. All that's currently known is they're a young (probably blonde) woman a couple of years older than Class 80 who considers Junko a 'big sis'. Is the real Hiyoko Saionji, still an agent of Despair, and a Hate Sink besides.
Is killed by being sucked out the airlock without a spacesuit shortly before the meteor comes.

- Thrown Out the Airlock: Her final fate.
