openHeavy-handed "badge of honor" troping Live Action TV
rr3elite appears to have a major Single-Issue Wonk focused on showing off the villainy of the character Zein from Kamen Rider Outsiders and their appearances in other Kamen Rider media, including this week's episode of Kamen Rider Gotchard. I initially reported them on ATT before for shoehorning in Fan Myopia-laden comparisons to other works through misuse of various tropes, but it is now clear that was a symptom of a much bigger wonk, mostly afflicting Zein's sheet, the page for Outsiders itself, and various pages for Gotchard (YMMV, antagonists sheet, Nightmare Fuel, #33's recap) where Zein's appearance is concerned.
I haven't sent any notifiers because there's too many offending edits to comb through, but a lot of their edits consist of what they have previously been reported for, plus Bold Inflation, countless sentence structure and grammar errors, and "look at how horrible this person is" examples that stretch Zein's villainynote it is a sapient AI that has placed the world into an authoritarian surveillance state with the intent of mass genocide and has manipulated the heroes into giving it its resources, but I would hesitate to call a lot of its actions deliberately symbolic or nuanced beyond face value.. They also added Speculative Troping examples to Gotchard #33's recap suggesting Zein would have had a darker and more dramatic role in the episode, when in reality he only appears to kill one of the unambiguously-evil villains in the episode and leaves just as quickly to promote Outsiders.
I'm not sure if this is a policy violation in its own right, but I cannot deny in good faith that it is starting to compromise their writing and thus the quality of the pages they are editing.
Edited by TrocyteVresolved What exactly was Zero Context about this example Live Action TV
I made this page today and I explained everything that happened in the scene and why it was sad and more and it still got deleted.
openPolitically-biased entry removal Live Action TV
On Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales, Clear Air Turbulence recently cut out an example concerning Last Man Standing with this edit reason:
"This doesn't apply - there's no example given of a "leftist" character that is loved by "leftists", this is just an excuse for someone defending right wing propaganda to say "Leftists love it too!""
I think like they were making a revision fueled by political bias (and not hiding it at all, judging by the edit reason), as the removed entry did attempt to give examples of characters "liked" by liberals. I believe it counts as a possible ROCEJ violation. What should we do about it? Should we give them a warning for it?
Edited by DongwaChanresolved Trope: Baby Played By A Blanket? Live Action TV
A baby (sometimes even a young toddler) is present in a scene but the script doesn't require them to do anything (except maybe cry, babble, or coo, but that can be added in post). Very commonly in those cases, and for good reasons, the baby is not played by an actual baby, but represented by a vaguely baby-shaped rolled-up blanket (often containing a doll). Because faces are hard, the baby is usually shown from behind or completely hidden by the blanket. Examples: most sitcomes, e.g. The Office, Big Band Theory. Also the second act of Into the Woods. Is there a trope page about this? I tried Google and couldn't find anything.
Edited by katharinaresolved Spoiler Tags and Warnings in a Recap’s YMMV/Trivia Live Action TV
Doing a larger cleanup of plagiarism on Doctor Who recap pages (you’ve probably seen me before if you’re a mod), and I’m wondering about a question about spoilers. Obviously there are no spoiler tags in recap pages, but what about said spoilers in a recap’s YMMV and Trivia pages?
For example, this is a trivia example from the episode “The Big Bang”:
- Word of God: The title of the episode isn't really about resetting the universe... it's about Amy's and Rory's wedding night and, as we find out next season, the resulting conception of River Song.
Similarly, there are spoiler warnings added by The Wild West Pyro (some of which were immediately removed). So I have to ask, are spoiler tags off for a recap’s YMMV and Trivia pages? Should they be re-worded to simply avoid spoilers?
Edited by CanuckMcDuck1openReality TV Scrappy Live Action TV
This might be a stupid question, but I was unable to find it actually answered for sure anywhere.
I see that when using The Scrappy, the bottom of the page says No Real Life Examples, Please!. Does this extend to reality TV as well? As in, the YMMV pages of reality TV shows should NOT have any form of The Scrappy (including Rescued from the Scrappy Heap) listed on the page at all? (As in using contestants or participants of the show as examples).
I ask because recently someone deleted all examples and text of The Scrappy and Rescued from the Scrappy Heap from the YMMV page of Hell's Kitchen (quite a lot, since it was an accumulation of 17 seasons worth). If this edit is valid and correct, then I assume there are probably many other reality shows that require this clean-up on their YMMV pages as well.
Again, sorry if a stupid question, just wanted confirmation and the red or green light to clean up other reality TV YMMV pages. Thanks!
resolved Referenced By... shows without a page Live Action TV
Siberia 82 deleted some entries from ReferencedBy.Live Action TV with the edit reason "This section is ONLY for "Shows without a page" (as shown by the subtitle). The ones I removed have their own Trivia pages, and therefore they don't belong here." I assumed that "Shows without a page" just meant shows without their own Referenced by... page, and that copying over examples from shows' Trivia pages was crosswicking, which we're supposed to do. Which of us is right?
openAdding tropes and examples to a page Live Action TV
Hello guys. Today I added another trope on the characters page of a Live Action show. This is my first time editing a page. When I finished editing and clicked on "safe", the trope then was added to the page but it did not turn blue and one cannot click on it. I wanted to asked how I can fix that? I made sure that I used an existing trope. Thanks a lot in advance and kind regards.
openWhat do you do with a page mostly plagiarized? Live Action TV
I’m doing a plagiarism clean-up of Doctor Who’s trivia pages. I got tipped off a while ago that almost every page of the first Three doctors’ pages has examples (mostly under What Could Have Been) that have been plagiarized from either the show’s wiki or this comprehensive website (which the wiki itself has cribbed from).
For example, several trivia examples from the episode “An Unearthly Child” (the very 1st episode of the series) had been plagiarized from it’s wiki article’s story notes.
- The first school scene was re-written to reduce the tension between Barbara and Ian. In the original script, Ian says, "When I've had a bad day, I come in here [the staff room], and I want to smash all the windows". Barbara retorts, "It hasn't been a bad day", and Ian remarks, "You're just naturally like that?" Barbara replies, "I hope not. I've had another kind of day. A very puzzling kind of day".
- Ian and Barbara's relationship was much more romantic in the original script.
- In the original script, the "PRIVATE" notice at the junkyard was originally supposed to appear significantly newer than the lettering on the gates. The junkyard was also supposed to contain "a broken-down old shed".
And while doing cleanup the trivia page for the episode “The Romans” and it is seeping with plagiarism, up to and including Wikipedia.
So how should I go forward with this? I’ve been editing previous pages to remove plagiarism, but this particular page is compromised with it.
Edited by CanuckMcDuck1openDropped a Bridge on Him example Live Action TV
A long while ago I added this example to Recap.Doctor Who S 27 E 13 The Parting Of The Ways:
- Dropped a Bridge on Him: Not to anywhere near the extent of say, the Sixth Doctor's death-by-falling-over or the Eighth Doctor's regeneration not (at the time) being explained at all, but the fact that Rose was able to store the vortex energy for several minutes and only got a headache as a result, while the Doctor is killed by just storing it for a few seconds raised more than a few eyebrows.
Another troper later added this underneath the entry:
- Considering that Rose was able to bring Jack back to life, the Doctor might have been able to heal Rose, but couldn't heal himself.
This resulted in a third troper deleting the entire example with "Repair, Don't Respond" in the edit reason. However, would I be right in thinking that the second-level bullet point was speculative troping, and that the right course of action would have been to just delete that rather than nuking the whole example?
Looking back on it I'm not very happy with how I worded the example in the first place anyway, but just so I'm not engaging in a (very slow-motion) edit war, would I be okay to put the example back in as this:
- Dropped a Bridge on Him: The Doctor's dying as a result of holding the vortex energy in his body for roughly five seconds before he returns it to the TARDIS was seen by some fans as an abrupt and poorly-explained reason for his having to regenerate, especially since it comes right after Rose kept the same energy in her body for several minutes of screentime, while using it to wipe out the Daleks and resurrect Jack.
openQuestionable interconnected YMMV/main additions Live Action TV
While browsing the page for Kamen Rider Outsiders, I've noticed several errant comparisons being made in both main and YMMV to unrelated pieces of media. Specifically, there are examples in both YMMV and main comparing it and/or its antagonist Zein to characters in Paranoia, Digimon, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The problem is that I'm tuned in to several tokusatsu circles, and these comparisons have never come up even once. The Alternate Company Equivalent examples are also misuse in the SSBU and Digimon examples, as Kamen Rider does not compete with either; furthermore, the specific characters cited (Galeem in SSBU, Leviathan in Digimon) are up to seven years older than Outsiders, and therefore any resemblance to them is almost certainly a coincidence. The Paranoia examples also feel like even more of a stretch, considering it's a very old western work that, despite being a Trope Namer, seems to at least be in the realm of Mainstream Obscurity. I thus believe these are a singular troper's views being projected into the page.
The pages for Kamen Rider have historically suffered in quality (and I'm decently convinced similar odd examples are on other pages for the franchise but can't remember where), but I was wondering if it would be safe to start here before gunning for cleanup. Is it safe to remove these for being a stretch?
Edited by TrocyteVopenErroneous writing credits on recap pages Live Action TV
I have noticed there is a problem with the writing credits on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer pages. For example, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer S1E1 "Welcome to the Hellmouth" it says,
Written by Whedon, Matt Kiene, Joe Reinkemeyer, Rob Des Hotel, & Dean Batali
This is false, as the pilot was obviously written by Whedon only (as seen on Wikipedia for example). I do know the reason why this happened: on IM Db, there is a(n unfortunate) directive to list crew members with certain job titles (namely, story editors and staff writers) under "Written By" for each episode. This means they are part of the writing staff, not that they actually co-wrote that particular episode. Case in point: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452716/fullcredits
I'm willing to go through the recap pages and fix these, but don't want to go on an editing spree without explaining why, so I'd use the edit reasons to link to this thread. Is that alright?
openConsolidation of tropes from spinoff Live Action TV
8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown is a comedy program which started off as a few special episode mashups of 8 Out of 10 Cats (a comedy panel show) and Countdown (a game show) and then had a spinoff series that is going on 12 years now. However, trope examples for Cats Does Countdown are splintered among pages for the latter two series. Would it make more sense to have tropes that are Cats Does Countdown-specific to be consolidated to one series or the other (or even its own page)?
openHow do I add a video example? Live Action TV
I know I've added one before ages and ages ago, but it's been ages since I've been active in the wiki, so I think things have changed. I'm willing to have it looked over or verified, if that's what needs to happen, but I just have one video example that I think works so well for a certain trope and I have literally no idea how to upload it. Has this feature been paused or something?
openDuplicate work page Live Action TV
The Show Llan-ar-goll-en has both a Series/ and a WesternAnimation/ pages, that seem to be duplicate of each other.
It is mostly live-action with a few animated characters; if I'm not mistaken, this kind of shows go in the "Series/" namespace.
The WesternAnimation/ page has more wicks and the video examples, though, which would need to be corrected first.
Edited by StFanresolved Requesting assistance with moving recap pages to correct locations Live Action TV
It was brought up here that the episode recap pages on The Twilight Zone (1959) from Seasons 2 to 5 have incorrect URLs, as the episode count doesn't restart at 1 for each season and simply continues to count in total episodes.
My question is, which would be the correct location to move one of them, for example, Recap. The Twilight Zone S 2 E 37 King Nine Will Not Return (first episode of Season 2)? Is it:
- The Twilight Zone S 2 E 1 King Nine Will Not Return (only episode number changed)
- The Twilight Zone (1959) S2E1: "King Nine Will Not Return" (that + added 1959 to URL)
The other revivals/series note (The Twilight Zone (1985), The Twilight Zone (2002), The Twilight Zone (2019)) have years in their recap episode page URLs, should the original 1959 series have that as well?
FYI: I made Sandbox.Recap The Twilight Zone 1959 so others can mend it, since I may be offline.

resolved Zero Context examples? Live Action TV
RippedFromTheHeadlines.Criminal Minds is basically a list of episode numbers next to a wikipedia link. There is absolutely no context. Mind you, that list contains practically every single episode in the series, but still.
Edited by Lermis
I've always enjoyed the "the one where/with" lines at the beginning of pages for Rocky, James Bond and Star Trek films, as well as Doctor Who episode recaps. I'd like to add some examples to TNG recaps, can I just dive right in and do it? Or do I need to get clearance from mods, or request permission in a Trope Workshop first?
Thanks.
