Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up][up]Yeah I got him up early last year. We cut him because it was determined his marginal hand in the other crimes was not enough along with the worst thing he did: attempting to rape Roselyn.

[up]To be the worst rated though? That’s a SPECIAL achievement. Even Battlefield Earth—still haven't seen—is 3%. Haha.

[down][down]Agreed. Not a quality game.

Yes to Kang, Ryan, Shep and Robert. The Gentleman has some nasty customers but because of the way the plot works we wind up with Dry Eye really just being a Hate Sink who's got the personality but mostly just stays to enforcing for Lord George and it's really just the rape attempt at the end that punctuates what a dick he is; George, on the flip side, has the deeds—we know he's a massive human trafficker, amongst other things—but when we meet him he's just a tired old man, quite civil to other mobsters when he speaks to Mickey and tries to curb Dry Eye's attempt to take over the latter's marijuana business. Great film but I don't think anyone keeps.

Also...

  • Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005): Majestic is a faux-friendly criminal who raped and killed protagonist Marcus' mother. To climb to the top of his gang, Majestic sets his boss up to be arrested; tortures another superior to death and begins ordering robberies and gang shootings en masse to cement his power; even threatening Marcus' infant son when he refuses to rejoin him.

[up]Yeah, shame he got cut, but it is what it is. That said, we still got two great MB keepers from it in the forms of Mickey and Raymond, so there's really no great loss in the end.

Gonna hopefully pick a different day to go to No Way Home before Christmas. Keep you guys posted.

I am collaborating with Ordeaux on this candidate from another Malaysian work, one that's been brought up before.

What's the work?

BoBoiBoy is a Malaysian-animated show where the titularly-named Kid Hero and his friends are granted superpowers by the power sphere Ochobot, and fight evil aliens with them. This EP focuses on the first film, BoBoiBoy The Movie (2016) note , where Ochobot and BoBoiBoy's bond is put on the line when Bora Ra and his Tengkotak gang take Ochobot away. note

Who is Bora Ra and what has he done?

So, Power Spheres are sentient spherical robots which store powers. They were made by Kubulus aliens on a floating island to aid them against invaders, but the Kubulus got greedy and reprogrammed some power spheres into destroyer robots to conquer other planets for their empire. The first power sphere Klamkabot uses his teleportation power to disperse his kind across the galaxy, and several Kubulus become power sphere hunters. The most notorious of them is Bora Ra and his Tengkotak gang, who, in a prequel comic, invade Planet Gogobugi to steal Enerbot from its governors, presumably killing them while their kids, after being attacked by Bora Ra, just manage to flee the planet with their family's power sphere.

In the movie, the Tengkotak find Klamkabot at the very island power spheres were made and stored, but he escapes by teleporting himself and the floating base to Earth. Bora Ra commands his brainy Number Two, Yoyo Oo, to find his location. When Yoyo Oo reports that he can't find exactly where on Earth Klamkabot is, Bora Ra forces Yoyo Oo to "find him now or get out of my ship!" only closing the bay door once Yoyo Oo claims he's found him. Yoyo Oo found Ochobot instead of Klamkabot, much to Bora Ra's chagrin, but because Klamkabot contacted Ochobot, Bora Ra "borrows" Ochobot forcefully. The heroes retaliate, and Gaga Naz, the Tengkotak's weaponised muscle, jumps in their way. In the midst of the fight, Gaga Naz seeks permission to transform, but Bora Ra says there's no need, and launches an Unrealistic Black Hole to defeat them before leaving.

After the Tengkotak dispatch Ochobot once they see the floating island, Adu Du and Probe, self-proclaimed biggest fans of Tengkotak that joined them after aiding in Ochobot's capture, stop looking up to them as much when the Tengkotak laugh at Adu Du and Probe's friendship, mocking the notion of befriending a robot. When Adu Du calls Bora Ra cruel, Bora Ra later gives them an errand; to feed Kurita, an alien squid, and not let it get wet - before ejecting them with it into the sea. The two tag along with the heroes instead after contact with water turns Kurita into a Giant Squid that tries to kill them, but the heroes take it down.

The next day, BBB and friends find Ochobot in a cave with Klamkabot, who explains that he must transfer his teleportation power to Ochobot to protect it, and demonstrates with a hologram that the Tengkotak would abuse it in their planetary conquer campaign. Bora Ra and Gaga Naz appear and ambush them. The heroes run to the Power Sphere lab to upgrade Ochobot, but the two aliens remain pursuit and attack, laying waste to the factory. Bora Ra lets Gaga Naz transform to annhilate the kids while he captures Klamkabot. Gaga Naz chases them as a hulking brute until he launches Homing Lasers on the conveyor belt the heroes run on, destroying it. He presumes them dead via Dead Hat Shot, but BBB takes his hat back after they leave.

Bora Ra makes it clear to Klamkabot that the extraction process will hurt a lot. But Klamkabot already gave his teleportation power to Ochobot in the cave. He sends a transmission to the heroes, demanding they bring him Ochobot or the rest of his friends would pay the price "Don't think I won't dare to, BoBoiBoy" he threatens as he holds a mini black hole by their heads. Later, the team teleports to their location and seem to commence the trade, but their plan to foil the Tengkotak fails. Bora Ra has the heroes witness him directly extract the teleportation power from Ochobot before chucking his broken body down a slope. BBB immediately runs for his friend, but Bora Ra teleports in his way, not helping matters is that he brings his battle armour and giant hammer with him, and commands the rest to destroy the others. BBB redemands to see his friend, to which Bora Ra lets... before continuing to attack him on his way to Ochobot.

BBB cries over failing as Ochobot's protector and friend, with the latter trying to comfort him; "I hope you..." but Bora Ra yanks Ochobot away mid-sentence, stating that he'll destroy BoBoiBoy's hope, and kills Ochobot in front of him. BBB is crushed, and Bora Ra mocks him for crying. Ochobot uses the last of his energy to grant the heroes eleventh hour superpowers, before Bora Ra strikes BBB down with his hammer. But the boy pushes back against it and begins to wage the Final Battle against him. But even after his hammer is destroyed, Bora Ra doesn't admit defeat, he launches a gargantuan black hole in the sky which threatens to swallow the whole floating island with the heroes on it. He attempts to escape, but his teleporting coordinates fail. By the end of the battle, Bora Ra is sucked into his own black hole before it explodes.

Heinousness

As of his installment, Bora Ra outshadows each preceding villain from the original series. The worst of them was Ejo Jo; who caused Adu Du to leave their home planet, killed Probe and seized the heroes' powers and Ochobot, but besides having a few too many Played for Laughs moments to count, he pales in comparison to Bora Ra's tenacity. As for the other Tengkotak members, Bora Ra is willing to sell out his own group should any of them fail to get what he wants, even Gaga Naz. So next to tackle is the most heinous of the franchise so far.

Retak'ka (EP link) from the 2nd film was brought here and approved. He is not of the Kubulus race like the Tengkotak is, and both have different goals. While Bora Ra seeks power spheres to conquer planets, Retak'ka extracted Elemental Powers directly from planets, destroying them in the process. The latter has a more visible kill count of innocents and soldiers, but Bora Ra is still clearly made a sadistic power sphere hunter with a fondness of tearing loved ones apart. So I argue that Bora Ra still makes it on his own.

Mitigating factors

None whatsoever, unlike Retakka's Freudian Excuse which did little to supply sympathetic qualities anyway. The first paragraph of Bora Ra's action summary stems from supplementary material which adds to the canon, a prologue to the comic book adaptation of the film and another comic special respectively, both of which serve to solidify his occupation as a ruthless power sphere hunter willing to do anything to obtain the power he seeks.

Final Verdict

I say sure to Bora Ra.

No child should have to think of selling medication for food. Are you afraid?

New proposal, from Venom's "Countess Bathory."

Who's the candidate?

Elizabeth Báthory, natch.

What does she do?

Lyrics:

Welcoming the virgins fair, to live a noble life In the castle known to all - the Count's infernal wife She invites the peasants with endless lavish foods But, when evening spreads it wings, she rapes them of their blood

Countess Bathory Countess Bathory

All day long the virgins sit and feast on endless meals The Countess laughs and sips her wine - her skin doth crack and peel But when nightime fills the air one must pay the price The Countess takes her midnight bath with blood that once gave life

Countess Bathory Countess Bathory

Living in her self styled Hell, the Countess dressed in black Life's so distant - death's so near - no blood to turn time back The castle walls are closing in, she's crippled now with age Welcomes death with open arms - the reaper turns the page

Countess Bathory Countess Bathory

Heinousness?

Murders a peasant virgin every night to bathe in her blood.

Mitigating factors?

None. She's not shown to care for her husband, and her welcoming death is not shown to be out of any remorse so much as horror her anti-aging scheme failed.

Now, Bathory was listed before, but cut with a bunch of other Horrible History Metal songs due to not being fictionalized enough. Honestly? I think she's fine here. Aside from the evidence the real Bathory was framed, the song uses the standard Blood Bath myth and a completely different method of acquiring her virgin victims (throwing a lavish party instead of hiring them as servants).

Verdict?

Kind of sounds like a fictionalized banquet there and it does use the blood bath myth which is pretty much unconfirmed.

Work

The Mark of Kri is the first in a duology, the other being Rise of the Kasai, the latter holding tropes for both games in one page.

The Dark One

The unnamed necromancer simply referred to as "Dark One" is a high-ranking member of an organization called the Kasai: this group plots to recover a generational series of texts randomly inscribed on the flesh of island natives at birth. An opposing group, Rakus, is sworn to protect these natives. These are known as the Marks of Kri, and when assembled, they can form a spell capable of annihilating swathes of the world.

When The Hero and the latest Rakus guardian, Rau, begin to make a name for himself and yearns for more adventure, the Dark One, posing as a humble but creepy dude, asks him to aid in excavating a tomb in a dangerous labyrinth, promising him fabulous wealth. Despite feeling uneasy about the man. Rau gets the job done and unknowingly recovers a Mark of Kri from the tomb, inscribed on dead flesh. The Dark One hands Rau a fat bag of gold and they part ways; the gold coins in his bag are actually cursed, forcing Rau to undertake a spiritual journey to save his life.

After his detour, Rau is noted by an oracle the Dark One kidnapped a child bearing the fifth mark and Rau rushes to his rescue. Upon arriving, he finds the Dark One already skinned and murdered the child, and the former ridicules him over it before setting a pack of zombies on him and leaving.

With Rau held up once again, the Dark One seizes the opportunity to commit genocide on his village and kidnap his sister Tati, who bears the sixth mark, raising the dead villagers into the undead to further bolster his army for world conquest. This effectively leaves Rau as The Last of His Kind in regards to the Rakus, and from then on he is forced to take up responsibilities more seriously.

In the midst of mind-breaking Tati, as her soul needs to be siphoned for the last part of the ritual, Rau in an Unstoppable Rage raids the Dark One's fortress and slays him as he's kept weakened with maintaining his undead army and the ritual.

Sympathetic Qualities

no. It's a villain in the vein of those Saturday morning cartoons, albeit more awful per game age-rating.
