Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I looked at the pages Vile linked, and like this the best:

Hey everyone, just popping in to make an announcement.

I wanna be a more active participator on this thread, but I have a hard time coming across works with definitive keepers, so I've decided to check my last resort: fanfiction.

I'm checking out a couple fanfictions to fish for potential C Ms. Once fanfiction in particular, is an Attack on Titan fanfic called A Second Chance which I believe will be finished soon. There's also a Bleach-Fairy Tail crossover called Protector of Fairies, which I haven't started yet, but do plan of reading some time around. Though the latter is definitely gonna take a while because it's long as shit (261 chapters).

I just saw Nobody tonight with a friend (fun movie) and I’m agreeing with Tyk that Yulian doesn’t count.

I look forward to when whoever does Hutch for MB though.

[nja]I see Tyk did it there. Checking that out now.

Okay here are my write-ups

  • Longmire:
    • "An Incredibly Beautiful Thing": Leland leads a Breeding Cult where he has brainwashed 12 women into joining and having sex with him, impregnating one of them, Evelyn Mace. When Evelyn tries to escape with her baby, Leland murders a store owner that found her before finding and imprisoning Evelyn; Leland would then have one of his followers try to take Evelyn's baby, stabbing an innocent woman in the process. When Leland's cult gets compromised, Leland drugs all of his followers and binds them onto a railroad for a train to run them over, before he attempts to commit suicide to avoid punishment for his atrocities.
    • David Ridges is Jacob Nighthorse's personal hitman who has killed numerous people with his MOs usually consisting of shooting them with poisonous arrows or shoving feathers down their throats. Hired by Barlow Connally to deal with Walt Longmire's wife, Martha, Ridges sends a meth addict to murder her before killing him to tie up loose ends. Faking his death to avoid capture, Ridges would shoot Barlow's son Branch with a hallucination arrow driving Branch into insanity and attacking Walt's daughter, Cady, while Ridges would scalp Hector alive when he tries to bring Ridges to justice. Ridges would then try to kill Walt when he discovers that he is actually alive.
  • Solar Opposites: Season 2: Ethan is amongst the many people the alien Yumyulack shrunk down and sent to The Wall. Dealing with his murderous tendencies, Ethan tries to suffice them by causing the Flooding of the Nerds, killing countless people. Being saved by Halk, Ethan embraces his homicidal urges and develops a god complex, becoming a serial killer who has murdered at least five innocent people in gruesome fashions. Detained by Halk, Ethan proudly confesses to committing these atrocities while planning to blackmail The Wall's leader, Tim, about a passageway Tim was keeping secret so he could let Ethan go and allow him to continue killing more innocence.

Hahaha. As the guy who put Stein from Pride & Joy up a while back, yes, he is indeed an easy keep. Good show, HT.

[down] I think the seminal Ennis keep will always be the guy who kept from his collab with John Woo. That comic (Seven Brothers) is another I'd absolutely recommend to anyone not wanting to read something from Ennis that's not A. relentlessly misanthropic, B. absurdly soapboxy, or C. both.

I think Weve probably mined Ennis for every example he has. I was looking up comics from him to find an example and couldn't find one that wasn't already listed

Seven Brothers is a fun read.

As for Ennis, some of his The Punisher MAX stuff is surprisingly emotional ("Valley Forge, Valley Forge" especially is memorable).

I happen to enjoy Ennis's work, but it's definitely an acquired taste. I should read Preacher.

EDIT: Rewrite time. Ravok did the original, and approves of the rewrite.

  • Iron Man: And Call My Killer... Modok!: Modok (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) is a sadistic lunatic with his enlarged head only matched in size by his needless cruelty. Once a scientist serving the terrorist organization A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics), Modok was subjected to an experiment that granted him super intelligence and telepathic powers, with the unfortunate side effect of turning him into a grotesque beast whose head replaced most of his body. Immediately using his new powers to murder all of his superiors and those who won't serve him, Modok turns AIM into an even more dangerous threat than before, using his soldiers to attack college universities and other highly populated locations where dozens of innocents are nearly killed. His favorite pastime being torture of the most horrific kind, whether physical or mental, Modok enjoys seeing how long he can torture a person before they die, with his record time being weeks on end. He takes deep pleasure in sentencing anyone from captured prisoners to his minions who fail him to be brutally tortured via their own worst fear for as long as it takes until they break down into madness, after which he callously has them executed. His ultimate goal being to mass produce Iron Man armors then use them to overthrow entire countries and bend them to his will, Modok forces Tony Stark to build the armor for him lest he torture the man's loved ones in front of him, never killing them, but making them eternally suffer. Even after Stark finishes the work, Modok attempts to make him a prisoner of his own body then torture his friends to death anyway for fun.
  • Iron Man: And Call My Killer... Modok!, by William Rotsler: Modok is a sadistic lunatic who loves all kinds of torture and will horrifically punish subordinates for the smallest reason. Modok was originally a "countless, nameless" employee of AIM who was subjected to an experiment that granted him super intelligence and telepathic powers, while grotesquely changing his appearance. Modok immediately used his new powers to murder all of his superiors and those who won't serve him, before taking control of AIM and making it an even more dangerous threat than before. Modok's favorite method of torture is Room 101, whose torturers make the victims confront their worst fears. Ultimately planning to mass produce Iron Man armors then use them to overthrow entire countries and bend them to his will, Modok forces Tony Stark to build the armor for him lest he torture the man's loved ones in front of him.
