This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Berrenta, That message was the length of some of the other users on this FAQ, are you asking everyone? Rhetorical question. "Come talk to us." = part of being a mod and working things out As said in that and in my first post here (1129) I am cooperating (in different words). I have showed I am willing to reach out and compromise. This wasn't a POV VS POV situation. It's a hate opinion vs canon facts, much like the example seen on top of page 1131. My first ban appeal on page 1129 clearly demonstrates I been with the program (cooperating). I admitted to wrong doing in my first ban appeal and demonstrated I did seek many ways of reaching out (cooperating). Many of comments demonstrates compromises (cooperating). I don’t understand the comments I received because they don’t match my real comments or actions and with the comments I am receiving I am feeling punished for being new and not knowing what to do. I learn more about the rules after I was suspended. I am feeling punished for things I don’t do and many things have been assumed on me. Cooperating yes. I have been this entire time.

Earlier today, in an ask I posted in ATT, I explained how I got caught up in an edit war with another user to fix Word Cruft and, as a result, we both ended up being suspended for it. I was unaware that edit wars were a thing until a few days ago, and I completely understand now that this is something not to be done and that I broke the rules by engaging in it. I should have read over the rules earlier and familiarized myself with them by now. In the future, if I encounter another edit war situation again, I will message the user directly or take it up in the page's discussion section instead of editing it myself, then try ATT or message the staff if that doesn't work. I was hoping that my suspension could be lifted, but if it's too early to request this, I completely understand.

~Reuben Sandwich - All three of those examples have been indented properly and no longer contain natter. Bullet points are for listing out multiple examples and should not be tacked onto entires for the sake of commentary. Any additional details relevant to a particular example needs to be incorporated into it.

I am going to give you another test. Please try to fix these poorly indented examples below. Don't worry about not knowing the source material; you don't need to know specific work details in order to be able to fix bad indentation. Feel free to use Example Indentation in Trope Lists as a guideline.

From Trapdoor Fail

  • In American Dad!, Stan had a trap door set up for just in case Hayley starts being liberal to a guest (in this case, George W. Bush). When she attempts to call Bush out on the whole "Iraq" thing, Stan opens the trap door, only for Hayley to move her legs so she's standing on the sides. However, Stan thought ahead and hits a button that widens the hole, sending her down.
    • In the non-canon (for what little there is) James Bond parody, Tearjerker, the titular villain (played by Roger) opens a trap door below a scientist who failed him. The door works fine, but the scientist gets stuck on the slide it leads to, forcing Tearjerker to call someone to push him into the water tank trap, setting up the Running Gag that Tearjerker hired a slipshod contractor who did a terrible job constructing his Supervillain Lair.

From Bash Brothers:

  • In The Legend of Korra, Mako and Bolin are actual brothers, and hand out asskicking like a pro team. They've graduated to this status in Books 3 and 4, since they hardly spent time with each other in previous books.
    • Korra and Asami are this too, mostly in Book 3 when Mako and Bolin pair off.
    • Lin and Suyin, once they settle their differences, are almost always fighting together in major battles, such as double-teaming P'Li in Season 3 or helping cripple Kuvira's Humongous Mecha in Season 4.
      • Wei and Wing, who are also actual brothers, are this every time they accompany their mother Suyin.

From I Cannot Self-Terminate

  • In Baccano, this is the ostensible reason immortals were given the ability to "devour" others. It took at least a few seconds before they realized they could use it to murder each other, though at least two immortals (Maiza and Sylvie) have considered asking Firo to end their lives this way.
    • This is why Lua is with her fiance, Ladd, who promised to kill her last, though it's not really explained why she wants to die. For reason, according to the novels, she thinks "suicide is a foolish option for her", so it's more like she could kill herself but chooses to be a Death Seeker instead.

~Tropers/LIES OK, let's look at this edit of yours from The Mikado :
* Inherently Funny Words:
  • Just about all of the names, of course. That's part of their purpose.
  • "I drew my snickersnee..." (a real word dating back to at least 1775, meaning a long knife used as a weapon)
  • Titipu. (Heh Heh....)
    • Due to the vagaries of dialect and orthography, this is likely derived from the name of the town in Saitama more often rendered as 'Chichibu'. (your edit)

Ignoring the fact that the entry its attached to is a Zero-Context Example, this edit is natter because it's commenting on another entry. Also, bullets are for examples, not commentary or feedback. If an entry is lacking something, you should feel free to edit in more information as long it's relevant.

Does this make sense?

~fabcats1 Alright, can you try to condense this entry down for us?

  • You know how the Japanese anime only showed shadows while the ritual was happening? The manga shows what happened in full detail, and it's extremely unpleasant. Particularly horrifying is the fact that there are tons of men watching while little Marik is bleeding profusely and screaming bloody murder. When you considered the fact that the Ishtars are referred to as a clan and that the definition of a clan is a large group of families with a shared ethnic heritage, that means that there were potentially dozens of people who just stood by and did nothing as a innocent child was mentally and physically scared for life. It's even worse afterward; when the ritual ended, Marik was literally just dumped in part of the underground tunnels with no medical care whatsoever. He's covered in blood, half-naked, and can't even stand up because of the pain. He ends up having to drag himself over to a wall and cling to it just to be able to move at all. Keep in mind that this is a ten-year-old child going through all this. When he finally reaches what looks like a hallway, he's nearly about to pass out from blood loss and pain, and then he stumbles upon Rishid who, after scaring his own face, apparently ended up collapsing from the pain while trying to find Marik. Marik is clearly horrified by what happened to his brother and ends up collapsing while both crying his eyes out and laughing like a maniac; from the look on his face, it's quite possible that the manga actually showed the mental break than ended up triggering Dark Marik's creation.

~Cartoon LGB Tfanofall Time You don't have to self flagellate over this. It's good that you acknowledge what you did wrong and are willing to improve.

You said that you would use PMs to communicate with other tropers instead of reverting other people's edits. While that's good, people won't always respond to PMs and there are other places you can go to discuss editing issues. I would like you to read Edit War and give us other ways you can avoid edit warring in your own words.

~Tropers/Malady

You might have noticed additional suspension blocks. We were looking into your case and decided that not only are you not ready for TLP at this time, there are more things that need to be addressed before you can be let back into that area of the site.

  • The primary reason is your fixation on disambiguations. We've told you so many times in the locked pages thread not to propose frivolous ones but you keep doing it. Furthermore, your private messages are full of asking people to disambiguate things for you. Not only does this run afoul of This Is a Wiki, it makes us concerned that you still don't get the message when people tell you things... a big reason for your initial suspension.
  • You have accumulated ten notifiers for Zero-Context Examples over the years, with the most recent one being sent a few weeks ago. Example writing and curation is a big part of the TLP process, and we need to trust that you can write good examples before letting you draft a trope.
  • Your TRS/projects activity is still lacking. While overall your posts are more comprehensible, you still slide into old habits, such as this stream-of-consciousness post from last week. We would like to see you in TRS more.

We've talked about the third part already and that is not something we can address here. Which of the first two bullet points would you like to address first?

~YourEternalTroper — Your suspension is twofold:
  • Your TLP suspension is for continuing to use it to draft redirects even though you have been told that's not what it's for.
  • Your wiki suspension is for accruing seven Example Indentation in Trope Lists notifiers, suggesting you haven't yet gotten the hang of this rule. You also have six notifiers for Sink Hole usage.

Do you want to talk about the TLP or wiki suspension first?

~Mechanicalman 450 — That now describes the differences in their sizes and demeanors. The issues with it are no longer context but redundant writing. Regardless, please keep Type Labels Are Not Examples in mind in the future.

To make sure your bases are covered, please expand on these Zero-Context Examples you added to Animation. The Lordz O Flys:

~Tropers/zarpaulus — You also have a ton of notifiers for Example Indentation in Trope Lists. However, since you brought that edit up, that you don't think there are issues with those examples shows you haven't fully grasped our Zero-Context Example policy.

For example, this is what you thought was enough context for Intelligent Gerbil:

However, that only contextualizes the "gerbil" (that they look like a real-life species) and not the "intelligent" part (that they're sapient). Nico could be someone's pet ferret and your sentence would apply just as well. You have to contextualize every aspect of the trope, and it has to make sense to everyone not familiar with the work.

Can you think about what information is missing from the other two examples, then rewrite them?

  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Elsa's a subversion, she's pursued a lot of disciplines but never far enough to actually finish a degree.
  • Red Shirt: Aside from the "inner circle", about fifty random people from the ASHA got shanghaied into boarding The Ship. However, if they get a speaking role their odds of surviving the episode are not great.

~Another Gamer — We'd like to be sure you can fix it without being corrected. Here are a couple from Music.Seventeen, how would you fix them?

  • Call-Back: Their choreography for "Our Dawn is Hotter Than Day" is made up of various moves from nearly all their previous dances. SEVENTEEN also tends to make call backs to their previous songs in their newer songs. The choreography for some of their other songs also follow this trend.
    • The choreography for My My has the cheek poke from Pretty U and the falling petal hand movements of Fallin' Flower but done in reverse.
    • With regards to lyrics/melodies, Lie Again has Vernon's first line in Don't Wanna Cry.
      • Fearless has Jeonghan's line after the first chorus of Fear.
  • Inspired by…: The lyrics and the performance of "MY I" was inspired by the movie Your Name, according to The8.
    • The choreography for "No F.U.N" was inspired by Kingsman.

~Tropers/Oneofthepack — You've cited private messages, discussion pages, and ATT. You can also use the Trope Talk and Wiki Talk forums for more in-depth questions. I'll lift your suspension.
~Charles Phipps — You already answered discussion pages. The answer to the question "where else can you go for consensus/discussion" can be easily found on the Edit War page.
~Tropers/NOYB — Your suspension's lifted.

@Synchonicity:

  • Intelligent Gerbil: Nico, the alien mech pilot who joins the crew in the second season, looks shockingly like a red panda.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Elsa has studied many fields of science and styles herself a scientist, but she hasn't managed to finish a degree in any of them.
  • Red Shirt: Aside from the four or five main characters (the "inner circle") the ship has about fifty other crew members, but if one of them has a speaking role they tend to get killed off by the end of the episode.

I thought I was pretty diligent about indentation recently, how old are those citations?

@Synchronicity: Let's start with the Wiki suspension first, then the TLP suspension.

EDIT: After reading the Administrivia for TLP, I realized I was too tempted to launch redirects at the TLP and should have discussed them on the Locked Pages thread or Trope Repair Shop.

EDIT 2: After reading the Administrivia for sinkholes, I realized I was too tempted in making long sinkholes to a trope, when I could have done it by placing a link on an important word or two. Then another one for indentation, I should not have just placed split bullet points for one work and just two to three examples.

What my edit was:

  • X's theme showcases...
    • The remix contrasts the original by...

When it should have been:

  • X's theme showcases... the remix contrasts the original by...

The double bullet point should instead explain the above bullet point with more context.

I was stupid enough to disregard the rules.

Gotcha.

  • PM the other person if there's one other person involved.
  • Ask the Tropers
  • Trope Talk or Wiki Talk
  • Report them if they vandalize it (which is far from beyond what was happening)

I promise this won't happen again and thank you for informing me about all this.

Thank you for educating me on this and hearing me out.

Edit:

In my original response, I poorly communicated the difference between a discussion page and posting in the forums to ask other tropes. My bad. I meant discussion thread.

I am currently unable to come up with examples that provide context for these tropes, so once my suspension is lifted, I intend to hide these examples from the front page of these works, unless I come up with full context examples, by the time my suspension is lifted. The same goes for any other ZCEs I created. I have however come up with examples that provide more context for these examples for Kano and The Lordz o' Flys:

These are my examples with more context:
  • Giant Spider: Kano's Animality in MK3 involves him turning into a giant tarantula, then squeezing his opponent to death.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Some variants of Kano's attire consist of a red and black color scheme, debuting in MK3, then carrying on to MK9 and his past self in MK11.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio:
    • If Czesio is excluded from the four main characters, we have Anusiak (big), Maślana (thin), and Konieczko (short).
    • Among the zombies, we have Marcel (big), the colonel who is literally a skeleton (thin), and Czesio who is the only child (short).
  • Dem Bones: The colonel is a zombie with an exposed upper skeleton and skull, making him half skeleton, in contrast to fellow zombies Czesio and Marcel.

~Duchess Snow Cool. We now have to discuss your editing patterns...

Coupled with the aforementioned Edit War, it paints a picture of someone who lets bias affect their writing. We like to be neutral on this website. If you are to get your editing privileges back, you have to commit to writing neutrally and not letting your dislike of characters/plot points or personal theories creep into your entries. Does that sound fair?

~Tropers/227someguy — You have been suspended for an Edit War over entries on Creator.Kellen Goff. Those entries are problematic in themselves but let's discuss the edit war first. When you re-add or re-remove an entry of yours that someone changed without discussion or consensus, that's called edit warring and warrants a suspension. If you think those entries deserved to be on the page, what should you have done instead of re-adding according to Edit War?
~Black Yakuzu 94 — You've been racking up a lot of thumps and even more hollers for incivility, bad-faith arguments, and other rule-breaking posts in the last month. Several of these posts are directly calling out other tropers (sometimes swearing at them), posting links to external social media accounts to make fun of their content, or just strawmanning other people's PO Vs.

Suspensions don't have a set time limit, but if we give you your forum privileges back, we will not tolerate any further rudeness from you. Are you prepared to accept that condition? Do you have any questions at all about the forum rules? Now is the time to clarify.

~Type 40 Your TLP suspension is because you just straight up do not Crosswick the tropes you launched. You shouldn't have needed multiple notifiers and a mod post to get you to crosswick Dressing Down and even now I see some examples from the TLP that aren't even crosswicked (like the Daria and the The Owl House ones). Now it's happened again with Unfortunate Search Results. That draft is crosswicked, but it shouldn't have taken two more notifiers and a suspension.

Crosswicking is an important part of the launch process described in TLP Guidelines. It is one of the only ways for new tropes to thrive. If you don't have time or energy to crosswick, don't launch a draft. What about this is not clear?

~There Aint No Mountain — OK, if you think an entry of yours was wrongly changed/removed, what should you do according to Edit War instead of putting it back the way it was and arguing in edit reasons?
~Tropers/Tronomics — Your mitigation locations are correct (you can also seek consensus on Trope Talk or Wiki Talk), but just to be clear (since you reverted your version several times): an Edit War starts on the first re-addition or re-removal of your entry, and you should try to get discussion/consensus instead of putting it back.

I'll lift your suspension.

~Mad About Love 97 — We really frown on rogue launching since it doesn't guarantee that the draft you launch is even in wiki-worthy shape or has no unresolved issues. It's also disrespectful to the active sponsor if there is one.

Further, when you discard a trope it is good practice to note your reasons for discarding in the draft. If you 'accidentally' discard it, there's a button that you can press to bring it back.

We'd like you to read TLP Guidelines and tell us in your own words:

  • If you want to launch a trope that is not yours, what should you do?
    • What if there is an active sponsor?
    • What if there isn't an active sponsor?
  • What are the requirements for launching a trope?

~Tropers/retrauxclem — It came to our attention that several of your edits consist of lifting text from other sources (eg. Wikipedia) and putting it on this site. We don't allow thatall writing on this site must be original. That goes for trope examples, Recap/ episode summaries, creator biographies, Heartwarming/ entries. If we give you your privileges back, we will not tolerate a second plagiarism offense. Is this clear?
